Style – the script is set out like most TV and
film scripts are following the pattern with
the dialogue under each of the characters
names and describing where the scene is
set at the top of each scene change. There
are brackets indicating that the first
dialogue the audience hears is in another
language and is a subtitled. There isn’t a lot
of dialogue in the script as the second page
shows there is not dialogue at all and it is
just descriptions of what is happening on
the screen.
Content – the script is for a TV drama series
called ‘Peaky Blinders’ set after World War 1
in Birmingham. The Peaky Blinders gang make
their money from illegal betting and the black
market. The leader A Thomas Shelby acquires
guns that has been stolen from a factory and
plans to use this as an opportunity to move
up however an inspector comes to investigate
the and recover the guns.
Target audience – the target audience forthisis
youngadultto adultbecause of itsviolent
themesandstronglanguage soisn’tappropriate
for youngeraudiences.Italsoisa programme
that mustbe watchedwithfull attentionasthe
dialogue doesn’texplainall the narrative of what
isgoingon so will be harderforyounger
audiencestofollow.Onthe NRSscale the
audience islikelytobe inthe C1 to B categoryas
these are the adultaudience. The audience on
the 4Cs scale islikelytobe the mainstreamas
thisisthe majorityof people andthe programme
isshownon BBC whichhas a wide mainstream
audience.
Narrative - as thisisthe firstepisode of the seriesthere isnoclear
beginningmiddleandendlike Braniganwouldsuggestthatthere
iswithall narrativesas the storycontinuesovereachepisode.
Despite thisProppstheoryof charactertypes isclearas there is
evidence of the herobeingThomasShelbyashe isdescribeshim
cominginon a black horse implyinghe more fortunate thanthe
otherpeople inthe poorarea,the villainisthe inspectorwho
appearslaterinthe scriptas he is trying to ruinThomas’plansand
the helperisthe restof hisgang.
Genre – the genre of PeakyBlindersisadrama, the
conventionsof thisisshownasnot all isrevealedinjust
the firstscene aboutthe storyline andcharacters,this
suggestsanunderlyingconflictgoingonwithinthe main
character, a conventionof drama. However, Rick
Altman’stheorythatthere isnolongerany ‘pure’genre
can be appliedtothisandthere are conventionsof
thrillerandactiongenre withthe violentandtense
scenesthroughout.
