Hyperactivity And The Underlying Issues
Hyperactivity and the Underlying Issues Douglas Nelson RN 66 Behavioral Emotional Disorders

Hyperactivity; classified by ICD–10 as HKD or Hyperkinetic Disorder, is considered more severe
than ADHD, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, syndrome as classified by DSM–IV. ADHD
is diagnosed more than HKD and its believed that HKD is less commonly diagnosed because of it is
restrictive and numerous criteria. Both of these disorders are being studied in relation to children's
sleep wake patterns, and the possibility of an underlying disorder being the cause of their symptoms.
Those symptoms being over activity, impulsivity, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to the large–scale study, when compared with the control groups those with the combined
ADHD symptoms of Inattentiveness and Hyperactive–Impulsivity had extreme rates of circadian
rhythm problems, sleep–talking and often nightmares. The data in regard to children on the psycho
stimulants, have difficulty pinning whether the medication helps or not. In some cases, it makes the
children's sleep patterns worse. In others it tends to improve or perhaps normalize in those children
with ADHD. It seems that even though medications can have undesired effects on sleep, it still is
unclear one way or the other. In some cases the sleep related problems may even make the severity
of ADHD worse or even produce ADHD like symptoms. It is important to monitor the sleep pattern
in a child diagnosed with ADHD. That way they can manage the amount of sleep disturbances, and
aid in bettering the quality of life for not just the child, but the parents as well. The aim of the
current study is to compare sleep, as reported by parents, in children diagnosed with HKD versus
children with no diagnosis. These children were matched in their age, sex and school year, with and
without medication. They were divided into two groups elementary aged grades 1–6. The clinical
group was of 30 children; 25 boys and 5 girls. The community group was

Lucio Went To Sleep Study Summary
Lucio went to the doctor and shared his history which got him a referral for a sleep study. He did not
remember much about the sleep study results other than he said he had over forty low oxygen levels
in a minute or an hour and the doctor told him if he did that during the day he would need to be on
oxygen. The doctor told him he needed to use a continuous positive airway through the night for the
rest of his life. That is all he remembers from his sleep study and talking with the doctor but still
uses his sleep apnea machine because he does not want to use oxygen throughout the day. At the
home equipment company Lucio got to try a few different masks that he was comfortable with, he
choose a nasal mask but was also sized for a full face

Vitalsleep Review: Practical Tips To Avoid Snoring
Vitalsleep review
Practical Tips to Avoid Snoring
A recent survey in the field of medical science has revealed that nearly 45% of the people snore.
About 20% turn into chronic snorers if they take the habit of snoring for granted. Snoring is an
issue, which is caused by throat muscles. When the throat muscles block air passage, it creates
noise. Snoring means that affected person has disturbance in the breathing pattern. The best part is
that most of the cases can be cured by making healthy lifestyle changes and using oral appliances.
Read Vitalsleep review before you buy a anti snoring device. Here are a couple of things, which you
can try to avoid snoring.
Sleep on your side
The first thing you are supposed to start with is by sleeping on your side. This minimizes the
chances of the snoring significantly. When you sleep lying upside, it will make your tongue go
backward and block your throat. This will cause a hindrance in airflow and this increase the
likelihood of snoring. Snoring starts when there air passage narrows down. You need to avoid
sleeping on your back. American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons suggest that you
can stitch a tennis ball to your back. This will prevent you from sleeping on your back. Whenever
you will come on your back, the tennis ball will disturb you thus preventing you from sleeping flat.

Overweight people are more likely to snore. This is because their throat muscles will vibrate when
they breathe. Experts believe that by reducing only 10 pounds of bodyweight, you will find a drastic
drop in your snoring habit. In you consume excess fat in your food items, then cut down its
consumption. Consuming more fiber and water ensures the clean throat while

How Does Roald Dahl Use Humor
Roald Dahl uses comedy and humor in many ways throughout many of his books and movies. The
types of humor that he uses ranges from satire to dark humor to low comedy. Roald Dahl adds
comedy and humor to his books and movies to make them more interesting and funny. Humor also
emphasizes certain scenes or lines in a book making them stand out and more memorable. Roald
Dahl puts humor and comedy into his books and movies from experiences in his own life. This
makes the funny and humorous lines or scenes more realistic and relatable. By using types of
comedy like physical humor, satire, and dark humor; Roald Dahl makes it so that the reader is
anywhere from chuckling to rolling on the floor with laughter.
Roald Dahl uses physical humor a lot in books such as Matilda and Charlie and the Chocolate
Factory. Some examples of when he uses physical humor are in Matilda The Trunchbull takes a little
girl by her pigtails and spins around in a hammer throw then letting go of the girl. The physical
humor in this is that The Trunchbull is throwing a girl by her pigtails and also when she is landing
and she gets up perfectly happy and ok with a bouquet of flowers. In Charlie and the Chocolate
Factory the physical humor is when a chubby overweight boy gets shot up the chocolate tube "like a
bullet." ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He uses satire in many ways to make scenes funny. In Matilda he portrayed the mean headmaster
The Trunchbull as a plump mean old lady that had warts. This was an exaggeration of the mean,
nasty headmaster that he had when he went to boarding school. He used his personal experiences
and he used them for ideas in his books and movies. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was based
off of his school where the students tested out newly made chocolates and gave there feedback to the
chocolate company. He used satire by making every candy and chocolate amazing, huge, and
punishing if the kids were to

Obstructive sleep apnea in school aged children presented with nocturnal enuresis
INTRODUCTION Obstructive sleep–disordered breathing (SDB) is an abnormal breathing pattern
during sleep characterized by snoring and increased respiratory effort and with variable severity
where obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) constitutes the most severe form of it. Childhood OSA has
been accepted recently to be associated with numerous adverse health outcomes, including both
cognitive and behavioural deficits. (1) In a small study, childhood OSA was also related to potential
neuronal injury in the hippocampus and frontal cortex. (2) Multiple risk factors have been identified
as a risk factor but still the most widely accepted risk factor is adenotonsillar hypertrophy.
Childhood OSA has different clinical manifestations as snoring, witnessed apnoeas, labored
breathing, restless sleep and others. (3) Nocturnal enuresis (NE) – i.e. intermittent nocturnal
bedwetting in children ≥5 years old –is a complex problem that associated with increased prevalence
in males, low socioeconomic status and educational level of parents, attention deficit/hyperactivity
disorder (ADHD), familial history of enuresis, or psychological issues as separated parents, sexual
abuse, and death in the family.(4–7) NE has been recognized as a manifestation of childhood OSA.
Alexopoulos et al (8) reported in their study that subjects with habitual snoring were at increased
risk of primary NE compared to those without

Symptoms Of Sleep Apnea
When the throat narrows a little or is absolutely shut, the sleeper gasps for breath, and wakes up
very often.
This plight is known as sleep apnea. People with this ailment have trouble sleeping.
What causes sleep apnea
Certain conditions can also promote sleep apnea causes such as bulky throat tissue, large tonsils, a
recessed jaw, adenoids, uvulas, tumors or cysts in the airway, and nasal deformity. All these can
cause the airway to collapse when you breathe. Sleep apnea is usually years in making, and the
pauses can last from 10 seconds to a minute. It can happen at any age, but more likely in thirties and
forties when muscle tones become flabbier, and weight gain takes a toll.

relaxing your muscles and tissues like sedatives and alcohol will do to you.
Conventional methods
As mentioned earlier, there is hardly any cure for sleep apnea causes and symptoms so if your
condition is getting quite serious, you might want to try conventional methods for treatment.
These methods may not be comfortable, or may be subject to some side effects, but could be help
for sleep apnea.
There are so many non–prescription nasal sprays available such as Afrin that can open the airway in
the throat. But be careful not to overuse them because they can make matters worse.
Generally, you need to be wary of medications, because some doctors can recommend stimulants to
keep tone in the airway during your sleep. Unfortunately it can stop you from getting extended sleep
you need to be healthy.

theories as to why these things occur along with facts. Why do we dream or have nightmares? What
is the point to these things and how do they contribute to our health? Scientists are doing their best
to research these things but sleep and things related to it are very mysterious and many things are
still left unsolved. There are also many disorders and illnesses connected to the need for sleep and

Snoring while on your back is probably mild snoring and can be fixed easily with improved sleep
habits and lifestyle changes. Snoring in all positions can mean that your snoring is more severe and
may require more complex and extensive treatment. Insomnia is the inability to sleep naturally and
is usually mistaken for an illness itself when in reality it is a symptom for an illness that may result
from many causes. These causes include pain, anxiety, depression, and other mental illnesses.
Drinks that contain caffeine, which is a chemical that stimulates the nervous system and stimulant
drugs like amphetamine or cocaine also prevent sleep. Disturbances in circadian rhythms, the body's
normal sleep and wake cycle, can also impair a person's ability to sleep well. Insomnia can range

Sleep Apne An Essential Part Of Everyday Life Essay
Introduction and Pertinent Anatomy and Physiology: Sleep is an essential part of everyday life. It is
one of several components which help keep us alive. However, a significant percentage of the
human population has difficulty reaching and maintaining Stage IV within their sleeping patterns,
the stage that allows the mind and body to fall into a deep and restorative sleep, known as REM
sleep. This is a condition known as obstructive sleep apnea, a "serious, potentially life–threatening
condition that is far more common than generally understood" (Sleep Apnea n.d.). Obstructive sleep
apnea can be very dangerous if it is not properly detected and treated. Nearly 18 billion Americans
today (or 1 out of every 5) have a form of sleep apnea. About 4% of people are undiagnosed (or 1
out of 50). It can occur in all age groups and different sexes. (Sleep Apnea n.d.) What is Sleep
Apnea? Apnea means without breathing. In many cases apnea is caused by tissue in the back of
one's throat that collapses. Sleep apnea is an involuntary cession of breathing that occurs during
sleep. We have four stages of sleep and the fifth being your REM sleep also know as rapid eye
movement. In short stage 1(one) is considered light sleep, stage 2 (two) eye movement stops and the
brain waves become slower, in stage 3 (three) brain waves still continue to become slower and
considered deep sleep, stage 4 (four) also is called the deep sleep phase, and last REM sleep is when
breathing becomes more rapid,

symptoms of daytime lethargy, fatigue and some sleepiness in passive situations, but has always
attributed this to his lifelong history of shift work. Up until six months ago, he is shift work did

Then there are the others, the ones who this happens to constantly, night after night, sometimes even
being so exhausted that you still can't sleep. I have been in both of those situations and let me tell
you, it sucks....terribly. I have compiled some ideas that i have tried and worked for me, maybe they
might help you! Adults typically need 6–8 hours of sleep a night. To find out what time you need to
go to bed to achieve this count backwards from the time you need to get up. Ex : If you need to get
up at 6am, 5 4 3 2 1 12 11 10, then you need to go to bed between 10 and 12. Routine: Setting up a
routine that you do before you go to bed gets your mind ready for bed too. Wind down with some
hot tea ( decaf of course!! ), there are a ton of flavors and types out there ( my favorite is peach
tranquility, from teavana, but any kind will work, you don't have to go with a loose tea.).If you don't
like tea, find something warm to drink that is decaf, maybe warm milk. Sit down and relax while
you drink it, preferably somewhere comfortable and soft, not your bed though, couch or a lounge
chair. NO TV or COMPUTER!!! I will repeat, do not use your computer or watch tv, both of these
keep your mind from wanting to fall asleep, it keeps your mind active and will cause you to toss and
turn for hours! Change into your bed

Sleep Apnea Definition
According to the National heart, lung, and blood institute website, "Sleep apnea is a common
disorder in which a person has one or more pauses in breathing or weak breaths while they sleep"
(NIH–National heart, lung and blood Institute, 2012, definition). The pauses and breathing can last
from a few seconds to minutes, and breathing pauses may happen 30 times or more an hour. After
the pauses, normal breathing can start but with a loud snort or choking sound (NIH–National heart,
lung and blood Institute, 2012, definition). Sleep Apnea can be categorized in three types:
obstructive sleep apnea, central sleep apnea and complex sleep apnea syndrome.
The cause of sleep apnea is due to a blockage of the throat muscles that keep airway flow open.
Some of the reasons for the blockage can be the relaxing of throat muscles and tongue unusually, the
size of your tongue and tonsils are not appropriate for the opening of your windpipe, and people
with weight issues. Other reasons can be the size of your head and neck which may lead to a narrow
airway passage in the mouth and throat. In addition, as people get older, the brain signals' ability
gets worse and causes throat muscles to stiffen. Consequently, airways have an increased chance of
narrowing or collapsing (NIH–National heart, lung and blood Institute, 2012, causes). Snoring is
one of the most known factor of sleep apnea, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Are Sleeping Positions Crucial For Our Health
Are sleeping positions crucial for our health?
By the end of the day, we all can't wait to slip into our beds and get a good rest before the next day
starts. It is important to sleep at least 7 or 8 hours per night, so our bodies could refill their batteries
and survive the next challenges of the day. But sometimes, you can wake up even more tired than
the last night. This could greatly depend on your sleeping position, since each of them affects your
body differently.
Sleeping on Your Back
Sleeping on your back can bring so many benefits to your health. First of all, there are no curves in
your back and the spine is in neutral position, so the neck and back pain are completely reduced.
Also, this sleeping position reduces the acid reflux, since your head is elevated and above the level
of your stomach.
Another unexpected benefit of sleeping on your back is a lower risk of developing wrinkles ... Show

Fetal Position
Curling up in a ball, pulling your knees high and tucking your chin into the chest may feel comfy at
that moment, but in the morning you will know this was a bad idea. Fetal position puts a lot of
pressure on your back, neck and other joints which can lead to severe pain and strains in the
morning. Also, it may also restrict deep breathing which can lead to shortage of breath or other
respiratory problems. And fetal position is not doing any favors to your skin and breasts.

Sleep Apnea: The Psychological Effects Essay
Sleep Apnea: The Psychological Effects
Sleep apnea is becoming increasingly more concerning for the association this sleep disorder poses
to the psychological effects on people. Sleep deprivation is only one example of the effects caused
by this medical condition which could be related to increased anxiety and depression. Millions of
Americans suffer from sleep apnea without even realizing the sleep disorder is creating a problem.
There has been significant progress in identifying sleep apnea, especially obstructive sleep apnea,
and creating successful methods to help individuals more easily live with it. The thought of losing
breath while sleeping without knowing this is occurring can intimidate an individual and his or her
family. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sleep apnea and obstructive sleep apnea are similar, however there are differences related to
different factors such as health, age, and weight. For example, studies showed overweight
individuals seemed to be affected by obstructive sleep apnea more than healthy individuals. Mental
illness is also a factor to look at for differences because there seemed to be a greater number of
people who had mental illness that also had obstructive sleep apnea compare to people without
mental illness. More research was available on obstructive sleep apnea and some of the research
suggested many people do not realize this medical condition is an issue. The problem is normally
diagnosed when something significant happens, such as problems living everyday life, relationships
issues created, or a medical event occurs. Sometimes a loved one will raise awareness of an issue to
an individual suffering from sleep apnea through observations made like obnoxious, increasingly
worse snoring or the loss of a job due to lack of sleep. Individuals seek medical support from a
physician and usually go through testing in a sleep clinic to diagnose the sleeping disorder.
Diagnosis is critical for obstructive sleep apnea because left undiagnosed the sleep disorder can lead
to several medical problems which could even potentially be death due to lack of oxygen.
Specifically if the airway is obstructed for long enough while sleeping, then a person could
potentially suffocate from lack of air.

Finally Get A Good Night's Rest With Sleep Apnea Treatment
If someone you know is snoring loudly most nights, you know how much that can keep you from
getting a good night's rest. What you may not know is that it's doing the same to the person who's
snoring. Snoring is not just about sleeping right, though. When snoring crosses the line into sleep
apnea, the chance of developing several serious health problems increases. For the sake of both the
snorer and the people who have to hear it, you should seek help for sleep apnea.
What Is Sleep Apnea?
Snoring is usually not something you need to worry about. Everyone makes noise in their sleep. But
when the snoring is loud and lasts most of the night, then you might have sleep apnea. In this
condition, your airway becomes partially blocked during sleep by your own throat and tongue. Your
throat muscles relax too much, which causes the airway to begin to collapse. This will either make it
harder to breathe – forcing air past it is what causes the snoring noise – or it makes your body think
it's being suffocated.
When this happens, your body panics and thinks it's suffocating. You suddenly wake up, but not
quite completely. Instead, you fall back to sleep because your airway is open again. As you fall
asleep, the airway collapses a little, and you have this horrible cycle of sleeping, gasping for air, and
falling back to sleep again. This is officially known as oObstructive sSleep aApnea (OSA).

are unrecognized or ignored, the disorder usually causes a combination of medical, social, and
psychological illnesses –– which can become life–threatening over a prolonged period. Although
sleep apnea is not a curable disorder, when symptomatic individuals utilize the availability of a
simplistic diagnosis process and effective treatments, they will participate in a preventative
medicine, adding years to their lives.

"Sleep apnea is a breathing disorder that affects people while they sleep. The most common
symptom is loud, heavy snoring, which is often treated as a joke." But sleep apnea is no joking
matter, as the risks involved are potentially fatal (Pascualy 1). The following case study is provided
by Johnson:
Beginning at about age 35, Fred Hampton, an overweight man who drove for a living became
increasingly tired during the daytime. He napped frequently at lunchtime. During trips he sometimes
pulled off the road to rest when he became too tired to continue. His wife was aware that he snored,
had interruptions in his breathing, and gasped for breath during sleep. No one suspected sleep apnea
syndrome. At age 40, on the way home from work within three miles of his home he fell asleep at
the wheel and hit a tree. He suffered a spinal injury that left him paralyzed below the waist. Only
then was he discovered to have severe obstructive sleep apnea. (20)
People with sleep apnea struggle to breathe and sleep at the same time. Since humans cannot live
with only breathing or sleeping exclusively, life becomes a struggle as these vital functions are
required to coexist (Johnson 28).
Any number of the following symptoms may be a sign that a person suffers from sleep apnea: loud

How to Use 'Imagine ' in Your Online Marketing Strategy
1. Create mental and enticing pictures into the minds of your customers using the words 'imagine ',

2. Use call to action statements that will leverage the imaginative ability of your customers. If for

The Effects Of Obstructive Sleep Apnea
A good nights sleep is one of life's basic components. But how many of us get a restful night of
sleep? And do you feel unrefreshed after waking up and daytime sleepiness, no matter how much
time you spent in bed? Does your partner complain that you snore extremely loudly? The reason for
these are that there're some sleep–related disorders that weaken the quality of life and sleep apnea is
one such kind.
Some facts about sleep apnea
It's defined as a disorder characterized by interruptions of breathing during a single night's sleep.
Your breathing temporarily pauses for a few seconds to minutes while sleeping due to blockage of
the upper airways and these pauses in breathing is called as apneas.
For example, the person will have disruptive ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Certain medical conditions such as Parkinson's disease, heart attack, stroke and any problems that
affect the brainstem, spinal cord and heart can cause to develop central apnea. CSA occurs in adults
with other medical conditions. In case of children, CSA usually occurs in infants with prematurity or
other congenital disorders.
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is the common sleep disorder, occurs when the brain send signals to
the muscles. Moreover, the airway is partially or completely blocked during sleep due to relaxation
of the tongue and airway–muscles. People with OSA is commonly associated with snoring.
Individuals with OSA can also result in excessive daytime tiredness, morning headaches, mood and
behaviourial changes.
Mixed sleep apnea is a combination of both central and obstructive.
According to a study by Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences in 2013, OSA affects almost 13–
19% in India.
A study published in International Journal of Medical Science and Public Health, 2013, reported that
OSA could become a major public health issue in India.

Sleeping is vital to the well–being of a person. With enough sleep we have a healthy mind and body;
it makes us productive in our endeavors and makes us happy. However, sleep deprivation can cause
chaos and imbalance in our body. There are a lot of causes of sleepless nights and one of these is
Sleep Apnea.
Sleep apnea is a condition wherein there is cessation of breathing for 10 seconds and more during
sleep. It is a serious condition. Sleep apnea may be a preceding symptom of an underlying health
problem. There are two classifications of Sleep Apnea; the Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Central
Sleep Apnea.
There are various symptoms of sleep apnea. Because Apnea is experienced during sleeping most of
the symptoms are manifested during waking hours of the person. However, there are also some
manifestations experienced by the person himself and observed by his/her loved ones when
sleeping. These manifestations occur in both types of apnea.
The most common symptom is exhaustion at daytime. This symptom is common in both types of
sleep apnea. During sleep a

Essay On Sleep Apnea
One of the most common types of sleep disorders that a person may suffer from is sleep apnea.
Sleep apnea is when a person suffers from uncontrolled stops in breathing. People with this disorder
usually stop breathing while asleep. This disorder is caused from blockage in the airway. When a
person is asleep, the airway may become tight because the muscles that keep it open are relaxed.
One form of sleep apnea is obstructive sleep apnea. In obstructive sleep apnea, blockage in the
airway may be caused from clotted tissue or fat. Snoring can be caused from any air that gets
through the blockage. When the snoring is stopped and the airway is completely blocked, a person
may stop breathing for about ten to twenty seconds or until the brain recognizes the apnea. A less

Daytime sleepiness is considered to be the most common symptom that a person with sleep apnea
suffers from. Although a person is not aware of the problem that they have, they are aware of the
symptoms because the sleep that they are getting is not good quality sleep. As a result of the
symptoms they are having, the person with sleep apnea will experience a full day of feeling tired
(Davis w.p.). In order to treat sleep apnea, a sleep test called a polysomnography is performed on the
patient. According to Dr. Vince Berger, "This test records the patient's brain waves, heartbeat, and
breathing during an entire night." Treatments are available to patients who are diagnosed with sleep
apnea. Some cases of sleep apnea can be treated by advising the patient to lose weight and to stop
sleeping on his or her back. More extreme cases of sleep apnea may require the patient to have
surgery in order to fix the blockage that prevents a person from breathing. The most common type
of treatment that is recommended is a specialized device called a

Without treatment, you may eventually begin to lose your teeth due to this condition. If you find
yourself clenching or grinding your teeth throughout your day, teach yourself to hold your jaw
relaxed by sliding your tongue between your teeth. This will force your jaw into a relaxed position
and ease the tension on your TMJ.
If you find that you are grinding or clenching your teeth while you sleep, we recommend a nighttime
mouthguard. This guard is made of thick, durable plastic so that even when you push your teeth
together, they cannot cause harm. A night guard will also give your TMJ a break, which could help
to end any headaches or pain you might be experiencing.

Pros And Cons Of Sleep Apnoea
TREATMENTS OF SLEEP APNOEA Sleep Apnoea Occurs when the walls of your throat come
together during sleep blocking off the airway above your trachea. CPAP (Continuous Positive
Airway Pressure) is considered to be the most effective treatment of sleep apnoea for the reason that
it reduces night time sleeplessness as compared to oral appliance. In the discussion below will
consider the argument for the treatments of sleep apnoea and which treatments is the most effective
whether CPAP or Oral Appliance. CPAP therapy is been considered as the most common effective
treatment for sleep apnoea in adults. A CPAP is a machine which uses a mask that fits over the
throat. It gently blows air into the throat and the pressure from the air helps to keep the airway open
while asleep (Moses, n.d). However, some patients of sleep apnoea still find it uncomfortable with
CPAP therapy so they tend to use oral appliance therapy as it has aside effect which causes dry
mouth, but it comes with a humidifier which adds moisture to the air as it flows and also used for
patients with mild to moderate sleep apnoea who do not respond to CPAP therapy (Downey, 2014).
Therefore, the use of CAP therapy as a treatment for sleep apnoea seems to be effective for
moderate to severe sleep apnoea. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

fittings as complains from some patients, oral appliance is considered to be convenient and easy to

Nothing feels quite like waking up refreshed and ready to tackle the day ahead of you. However,
while we all know how important sleep is, many of us still struggle to fall asleep at night. Moreover,
I am willing to wager that many of us also always seem to wake up fatigued, no matter how long we
have slept. If you have trouble sleeping it is possible that you may have one of several common
sleeping disorders.
The following guide is here to help you identify why you are struggling to get the satisfactory sleep
you need (and deserve).

Insomnia – Insomnia is a sleeping disorder that is characterized by a general difficulty falling and/or
staying asleep. It can range in its effects and severity, though people with insomnia have one or
more of the following symptoms:
A difficulty falling asleep.
Waking up multiple times during the night, and struggling to go back to sleep.
Waking up early in the morning for no apparent reason.
Feeling fatigued upon waking.
Irritability.
Problems with concentration or memory.
Insomnia can range from being transient or acute (short–term) to chronic condition (long–term).
If you suspect you may have Chronic Insomnia, then that is best handled by a health professional as
chronic insomnia can be either a symptom of, or an eventual contributor to, severe health problems
such as depression, chronic stress, and serious physical health problems.
Acute Insomnia is generally related to stress factors, both emotional and physical. Generally short–
term insomnia can be handled through simple lifestyle adjustments and successfully recognizing
what stress factors are causing poor sleep quality.

There is another sleeping disorder called Sleep Apnea. Sleep Apnea is not really problems with

sleep apnea include
– loud or irregular snoring – excessive daytime sleepiness – repeated nightly arousals – non–
refreshing sleep – morning headache – nightly periodic absent breathing Loud snoring at night can
be more than just a nuisance. It can actually signal to you that something could be wrong with
breathing during sleep. In most cases, there are no serious medical consequences associated with
snoring.
But for about 20 million Americans, this loud, habitual snoring can indicate a life–threatening
disorder know as sleep apnea. An apnea is actually a lack of breath. For most people during sleep, it
is normal for the breathing muscles to relax. The problem is, for some people, excessive muscle
relaxation occurs which disrupts breathing. Disordered breathing during sleep also can occur if the
brain stops sending the needed messages to the breathing muscles. In either case, the presence of
apnea should be taken seriously.
Sleep apnea is more common in middle–aged men and overweight people.

we have also had our share of experiencing a bad night's sleep at one time or another. Imagine
having a sleep disorder in which your breathing is constantly disrupting the quality of your sleep at

Often times the sleeper is unaware of this involuntary cessation of breathing and it can occur up to
hundreds of times a night. There are three different types of sleep apnea: obstructive, central, and

Research shows that short sleep duration results in metabolic changes that may be linked to obesity.
As the rise of obesity for children escalates, obesity continues to be a major concern. The CDC says
that 1 in 3 American children born in 2000 will develop diabetes, and children under 10 years of age
are already developing type 2 diabetes, which is primarily seen in adults usually over the age of 40.
Uncontrolled diabetes can lead to hypertension, and increased risk of heart attack. Consequently, the
relationship between sleep and depression is a little more discerning. Recent research suggests that
depressive symptoms may decrease once sleep apnea has been effectively treated and sufficient
sleep restored. Sleep apnea may also contribute to poor performance in daily activities such as
operating a motorized vehicle and poor academic or work performance. Without the adequate
amount of sleep that your brain needs to function, this disease can worsen over

reduces the amount of oxygen flowing to the brain which causes brain issues. People with sleep
apnea usually wake up at night because of the shortness of breathing, then resume back to sleep after
adjusting their breathing. Davis states that due to sleep apnea, a few individual has sleeping issues
such as snoring, headaches or even find it hard to fall asleep. Sleep apnea is also existed in children
(from 0.5% to 3% of the population) which cause them often be crying at night and tired in the next

Although there is a treatment for sleep apnea, the successful treatment requires surgery. Davis states
the most successful treatment in children is to remove the child's tonsils and adenoids. Another
treatment that Davis shows in his article is the CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) though
Davis explains this treatment only splints open the airway and is uncomfortable since the patient has
to sleep with a mask. As Davis states a few symptoms of sleep apnea in children previous in his
writing, Davis states that children with sleep apnea usually have many special education issues.
They might find it hard to concentrate on a certain thing; they usually having behavior and memory
issues. Davis further explains that those symptoms mainly come from the children's sleepiness
which caused by sleep apnea. Davis suggests that the parents and teachers should be more
observable toward the children since sleep apnea symptoms are similar to attention deficit disorder.
Davis encourages that children with sleep apnea should get the specialty since they having trouble
on focusing, and they might having difficulty adapt to school or society. Although there are some
serious damages that have caused by sleep apnea, Davis suggests the people should be more positive

The Effects Of Sleep On Respiratory Diseases
Introduction
Almost half of children's life is spent asleep. Therefore, it is important for the clinicians to know the
effect of sleep on respiratory diseases. (Marcus, 2001) Sleep disordered breathing may lead to
serious and miserable complications such as sleep fragmentation, cognitive and behavioral changes,
growth retardation, pulmonary hypertension and cor pulmonale. Unfortunately the prevalence of
sleep related breathing disorders is high (3–12% of pediatric population); obstructive sleep apnea
syndrome alone affects 3% of children.(Church 2012) Before the development of sleep studies,
pediatricians mainly depended on history and physical examination for the diagnosis of sleep
disorders. Researchers have tried to formulate clinical score questionnaires as an alternative to
polysomnography. For the first time in 1984, the role of history and physical examination in the
diagnosis of OSAS was assessed by Brouillete. However, several studies have demonstrated that
clinical presentation alone cannot differentiate sleep related breathing disorders such as primary
snoring from OSAS. Brietzke SE (Brietzke, Katz et al. 2004) showed that only 55.8% of patients
were identified by clinical presentation as OSAS; were confirmed by polysomnography later. This
unreliability could be caused by several factors; the most significant one is inaccuracy of history as
some parents may overestimate difficulties in

ADHD is diagnosed more than HKD and its believed that HKD is less commonly diagnosed because of it is restrictive and numerous criteria. According to the large–scale study, when compared with the control groups those with the combined ADHD symptoms of Inattentiveness and Hyperactive–Impulsivity had extreme rates of circadian rhythm problems, sleep–talking and often nightmares. The data in regard to children on the psycho stimulants, have difficulty pinning whether the medication helps or not. In some cases, it makes the children's sleep patterns worse. In others it tends to improve or perhaps normalize in those children with ADHD. It seems that even though medications can have undesired effects on sleep, it still is unclear one way or the other. In some cases the sleep related problems may even make the severity of ADHD worse or even produce ADHD like symptoms. It is important to monitor the sleep pattern in a child diagnosed with ADHD. That way they can manage the amount of sleep disturbances, and aid in bettering the quality of life for not just the child, but the parents as well. The aim of the current study is to compare sleep, as reported by parents, in children diagnosed with HKD versus children with no diagnosis. These children were matched in their age, sex and school year, with and without medication. They were divided into two groups elementary aged grades 1–6. The clinical group was of 30 children; 25 boys and 5 girls. The community group was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The doctor told him he needed to use a continuous positive airway through the night for the rest of his life. Adults typically need 6–8 hours of sleep a night. To find out what time you need to go to bed to achieve this count backwards from the time you need to get up. Ex : If you need to get up at 6am, 5 4 3 2 1 12 11 10, then you need to go to bed between 10 and 12. Routine: Setting up a routine that you do before you go to bed gets your mind ready for bed too. Wind down with some hot tea ( decaf of course!! ), there are a ton of flavors and types out there ( my favorite is peach tranquility, from teavana, but any kind will work, you don't have to go with a loose tea.).If you don't like tea, find something warm to drink that is decaf, maybe warm milk. Sit down and relax while you drink it, preferably somewhere comfortable and soft, not your bed though, couch or a lounge chair. NO TV or COMPUTER!!! I will repeat, do not use your computer or watch tv, both of these keep your mind from wanting to fall asleep, it keeps your mind active and will cause you to toss and turn for hours! • 30. Sleep Apnea Definition According to the National heart, lung, and blood institute website, "Sleep apnea is a common disorder in which a person has one or more pauses in breathing or weak breaths while they sleep" (NIH–National heart, lung and blood Institute, 2012, definition). The pauses and breathing can last from a few seconds to minutes, and breathing pauses may happen 30 times or more an hour. After the pauses, normal breathing can start but with a loud snort or choking sound (NIH–National heart, lung and blood Institute, 2012, definition). Sleep Apnea can be categorized in three types: obstructive sleep apnea, central sleep apnea and complex sleep apnea syndrome. The cause of sleep apnea is due to a blockage of the throat muscles that keep airway flow open. Some of the reasons for the blockage can be the relaxing of throat muscles and tongue unusually, the size of your tongue and tonsils are not appropriate for the opening of your windpipe, and people with weight issues. Other reasons can be the size of your head and neck which may lead to a narrow airway passage in the mouth and throat. In addition, as people get older, the brain signals' ability gets worse and causes throat muscles to stiffen. Consequently, airways have an increased chance of narrowing or collapsing (NIH–National heart, lung and blood Institute, 2012, causes). Snoring is one of the most known factor of sleep apnea, and ... Sleep apnea and obstructive sleep apnea are similar, however there are differences related to different factors such as health, age, and weight. For example, studies showed overweight individuals seemed to be affected by obstructive sleep apnea more than healthy individuals. Mental illness is also a factor to look at for differences because there seemed to be a greater number of people who had mental illness that also had obstructive sleep apnea compare to people without mental illness. More research was available on obstructive sleep apnea and some of the research suggested many people do not realize this medical condition is an issue. The problem is normally diagnosed when something significant happens, such as problems living everyday life, relationships issues created, or a medical event occurs. Sometimes a loved one will raise awareness of an issue to an individual suffering from sleep apnea through observations made like obnoxious, increasingly worse snoring or the loss of a job due to lack of sleep. Individuals seek medical support from a physician and usually go through testing in a sleep clinic to diagnose the sleeping disorder. Diagnosis is critical for obstructive sleep apnea because left undiagnosed the sleep disorder can lead to several medical problems which could even potentially be death due to lack of oxygen. Specifically if the airway is obstructed for long enough while sleeping, then a person could potentially suffocate from lack of air. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

What you may not know is that it's doing the same to the person who's snoring. Snoring is not just about sleeping right, though. When snoring crosses the line into sleep apnea, the chance of developing several serious health problems increases. For the sake of both the snorer and the people who have to hear it, you should seek help for sleep apnea. What Is Sleep Apnea? Snoring is usually not something you need to worry about. Everyone makes noise in their sleep. But when the snoring is loud and lasts most of the night, then you might have sleep apnea. In this condition, your airway becomes partially blocked during sleep by your own throat and tongue. Your throat muscles relax too much, which causes the airway to begin to collapse. This will either make it harder to breathe – forcing air past it is what causes the snoring noise – or it makes your body think it's being suffocated. When this happens, your body panics and thinks it's suffocating. You suddenly wake up, but not quite completely. Instead, you fall back to sleep because your airway is open again. As you fall asleep, the airway collapses a little, and you have this horrible cycle of sleeping, gasping for air, and falling back to sleep again. The following case study is provided by Johnson: Beginning at about age 35, Fred Hampton, an overweight man who drove for a living became increasingly tired during the daytime. He napped frequently at lunchtime. During trips he sometimes pulled off the road to rest when he became too tired to continue. His wife was aware that he snored, had interruptions in his breathing, and gasped for breath during sleep. No one suspected sleep apnea syndrome. At age 40, on the way home from work within three miles of his home he fell asleep at the wheel and hit a tree. He suffered a spinal injury that left him paralyzed below the waist. Uncontrolled diabetes can lead to hypertension, and increased risk of heart attack. Consequently, the relationship between sleep and depression is a little more discerning. Recent research suggests that depressive symptoms may decrease once sleep apnea has been effectively treated and sufficient sleep restored. Sleep apnea may also contribute to poor performance in daily activities such as operating a motorized vehicle and poor academic or work performance. • 80. The Effects Of Sleep On Respiratory Diseases Introduction Almost half of children's life is spent asleep. Therefore, it is important for the clinicians to know the effect of sleep on respiratory diseases. (Marcus, 2001) Sleep disordered breathing may lead to serious and miserable complications such as sleep fragmentation, cognitive and behavioral changes, growth retardation, pulmonary hypertension and cor pulmonale. Unfortunately the prevalence of sleep related breathing disorders is high (3–12% of pediatric population); obstructive sleep apnea syndrome alone affects 3% of children.(Church 2012) Before the development of sleep studies, pediatricians mainly depended on history and physical examination for the diagnosis of sleep disorders. Researchers have tried to formulate clinical score questionnaires as an alternative to polysomnography. For the first time in 1984, the role of history and physical examination in the diagnosis of OSAS was assessed by Brouillete. However, several studies have demonstrated that clinical presentation alone cannot differentiate sleep related breathing disorders such as primary snoring from OSAS. Brietzke SE (Brietzke, Katz et al. 2004) showed that only 55.8% of patients were identified by clinical presentation as OSAS; were confirmed by polysomnography later. This unreliability could be caused by several factors; the most significant one is inaccuracy of history as some parents may overestimate difficulties in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
