Traditionally, animated films have been made for and consumed by children, with the plotlines and
themes being relatively basic and forthright. However, recent years have seen the release of
animated films that's explore significantly more adult themes and thought provoking ideas. Perhaps
the most confronting example of adult themes in an animated film is in 2016's 'Zootopia'. The film

Examples of discrimination are prevalent throughout the entire narrative towards both predators and
prey. For example, Judy Hopps is consistently underestimated and ridiculed in her endeavours to
become the first 'bunny cop'. However, the most blatant instance of discrimination is illustrated in a
flashback scene to the childhood of Nick Wilde. When we are introduced to Nick, it is revealed he is
a con artist and guilty of fraud. Essentially he embodies the 'shifty' and 'untrustworthy' stereotypes
that are linked to foxes. Although, during the second act we learn about Nick's past as a young fox
with dreams of joining the junior rangers troop. As a predator, the prey dominant troop rejects Nick,
shoving him too the ground and putting a muzzle on him, stating "if you thought we'd ever trust a
fox without a muzzle, you're even dumber then you look". Thus, from that moment, Nick heads
down a life of deviance. Nick divulges to Judy that the experience taught him that "if the world's
only going to see a fox as shifty and untrustworthy, there is no point at trying to be anything else".

The stop motion animation sequences were filmed separately from the live action scenes with the
actors. These two parts were then combined to create the illusion that the ape was towering over the
actors. In the 2005 remake of the film, director Peter Jackson relied on Computer–Generated
Imagery (CGI) to animate Kong. This use of CGI gave the director greater artistic control of the
narrative. Many of the sets were computer–generated, as well as Kong himself. To combine both the
actors and the computer–generated images together, chroma keying was used. In the scene where
Ann Darrow is placed in the hand of Kong, the actress was filmed against a green screen, and held
by a large green hand. When this scene was merged with the digital Kong, a composite image shows
Kong holding her. Since chroma–keying technology did not exist in the 1930's, a full–sized, fur
covered hand had to be constructed to create the effect of Kong holding the actor. The difference

The animated film, Ratatouille, may seem like just another Disney/Pixar collaboration to some, and
while that partnership seems to always produce innovative and interesting films, this film about a rat
who realizes his dream to become a chef is something beyond even, what these two giants in the
film industry usually do together. It is more than just a sweet story about Remy, an
anthropomorphized rat–but not too anthropomorphized–realizing his dream along with the garbage
boy, Linguini, who teams up with Remy. Both of them discover who they really are and overcome
insecurities that previously prevented them from realizing their full potential, but the movie is a
recipe for success in many ways. The loving care and talent that is combined in the making of this
film is the same kind of care and talent that Remy–or any real chef–puts into his food. Still, it seems
impossible that a rat making food in a Parisian restaurant could possibly have the right ingredients
to produce a successful result–however, Ratatouille proves that it does. Just like the painstaking
attention that goes into a chef's creation of a meal, the care and skill that resulted in the film sets
Ratatouille above the typical animated movie and makes it a classic in not just unusual story–lines,

This review will critically analyze and evaluate, Ryan by Chris Landreth and Waltz with Bashir by
Ari Folman, and assess the role of the animated documentaries in the film world. It will explore the
truth and validity in animated documentaries and how each of the films visually portray the key
themes. I will argue that animations can be valid documentaries, due to their focus on the subjective
and unique ways to depict emotion and mental responses.

By using primary evidence to create the films, there is a suggested basis of truth. Each of these films
treat the interviews in different ways. Folman uses the interviews to further his own story to evoke
the memories he has repressed. In contrast, Landreth uses them to reflect more directly on his own
personal experience. This is first seen in Waltz with Bashir through Folman's first 'epiphany' in
which he has his first flashback to the war. Likewise this is first seen in Ryan when Landreth asks
Larking to give up alcohol. The montage of photos that follow Larkin's angry outburst at this
suggestion reveals that Landreth's mother also had an alcohol addiction, which caused her death. A
black substance covers the old photos of Landreth's mother and increases to cover the photos as as
she ages. At this point, we gain greater insight into Landreth's personal contribution to the story and

Stop–motion animation requires the shooting of physically manipulated still objects to appear as
moving objects.
Some use dolls, props or clay (also known as called Claymation) to sequentially move an object in
between individually shot frames.
Depending on the preference of the director, stop–motion animation may also require either
traditional or computer animation to supplement the movie's other visual requirements such as the
backgrounds, sets, and props.
Examples of stop–motion animation on TV are commonly children's shows such as Morph, Shaun
the sheep, Bagpuss, The Clangers, Noddy and Wallace and Gromit's World of Invention.
The advantage of stop motion animation is that you can be creative because there aren't many

They came up with the idea a simulation, sort of following the leader. They created the leaders and
the followers so logically, the followers had to follow the leaders but at the same time avoiding each
other because they did not want the wildebeests to crash into each other. The next step was to match
them into the background. The CGI crew built the 3 dimensional grid stages which matched the
perspective and the look of the background which was going to be in the scene. Then they placed
one of the simulations on the grid and replaced the small magnets with the wildebeests running. The
different angles of the camera gave the audience the possibility to see the wildebeests running either
over the camera or under or even zoomed in the crowd.
In terms of color, the animators wanted the wildebeests to be slightly of different color so they gave
them random wild colors. It was made with the purpose that the director now could say what exactly
he liked or disliked and what he wanted to change in the particular wildebeest in the scene. When
they put this scene in the film for a draft version, the shades of grey were applied to match the black
and white film. And then in final color, they gave them each different coloring but within a very
limited range of shading: some of them became slightly lighter grey, some of them darker grey. All

Everyone knows the classic quote from Wizard of Oz, "Toto, I've got a feeling we're not in Kansas
anymore." This quote is from one of many iconic movies that was filmed in the 1930's. The 1930's
was a difficult decade during the Great Depression, but this decade produced many of the all–time
best movies. Classic movies from the 1930's set the standard for movies and introduced new ideas to
the film industry.
One movie that was groundbreaking from the 1930's was Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. This
movie was truly unique compared to movies that were previously filmed; the film industry was
surprised by the ingenuity with which the movie was produced with. It set the standard for animated
movies. Whenever an animated film was being produced in the decades following the 30's, Snow
White and the Seven Dwarfs was used as the standard that the movie had to use. The movie was

Shrek would like for people to like him, but cannot expect miracles, and won't change to suit
anybody but him.
Shrek provides a lot of the film's humour, mostly without even trying. His whole character is a
jokey, funny one and he is always looking for something to make a joke out of. He burps and farts
openly quite a lot and doesn't care if anyone hears him. He makes a lot of jokes about Donkey. For
example, "I'm going to save my ass!" Here he is referring to Donkey needing help. Shrek has a lot
of charm and this works on viewers as they like his humour, easiness at being himself and the
morals he upholds.
Shrek comes across as being very thick–skinned most of the time and nothing seems to hurt him, but
during various conversations between Shrek and Donkey, and even Shrek and Princess Fiona, we
see the real side of Shrek as he tries to explain himself to Donkey and how he's a real person with
real feelings. At one point he says 'Ogres are like onions, they have layers." This is one of the key
phrases in the film. He wants people to accept him and understand him but most of the time this isn't

GCC's animation department consists of about nine classes each term, which are taught by
experienced animators. Technology keeps advancing, and 3D is being widely used in the film
industry.
Yina Chang is one of the talented professors in the animation department. She teaches Art 233
(Character set–up) and Art 235 (character animation). In her class, before they animate on the
computer, they sketch it out on a story board to get their ideas flowing. Then, they begin their
animation process.
"I teach hands on skill that prepare my students for the animation industry" Chang said.
The main software they use is Maya, an animation program used internationally. The program
contains modeling, texture, and a lighting simulation, and there is a generator to process images.
"Maya is one of the best animation packages" Chang said.
Chang spent years working professionally in the animation industry. She has participated in several
big–budget productions throughout her successful career including "Apollo 13" (Gene Kranz 1995),
"Star Wars" (George Lucas 2002) and "Frozen" (Chirs buck 2013). She was the technical director
for most of the Yoda shots in "Star Wars Episode II". This was the first production to introduce
computer–generated images. Before CGI was used, yoda had limited movement. CGI gives the

Themes And Themes Of The Film ' Zootopia '
Traditionally, animated films have been made for and consumed by children, with the plotlines and
themes being relatively basic and forthright. However, recent years have seen the release of
animated films that explore significantly more adult themes and thought provoking ideas. Perhaps
the most confronting example of adult themes in an animated film is in 2016's 'Zootopia'. The film
forces viewers to think about concepts such as racial segregation, nature vs. nurture and the
debilitating effect of stereotyping. Although Zootopia features anthropomorphic animals, it is easy
to draw a connection between the film's prey vs. predator narrative and racial divide in our own
society.
In essence, this paper will outline two significant themes related to crime and the effect of media
explored in the film. Most notably, the nature of crime and criminality is explored thoroughly.
Specifically, the effect limited opportunities and racial stereotyping can have on promoting an
individual down a path of crime. Particular attention will be given to a scene in which a youthful fox
wishes to join a prey–dominant Boy Scout troop, only to be rejected and humiliated because he is a
predator. Furthermore, the concept of a moral panic caused by media news reporting is displayed
excellently in a montage scene in which prey are scared of predators as the media reports that

Film Analysis : Waltz With Bashir
Presented in an engaging and intensely graphic visual style, Waltz with Bashir uses the medium of
fluid animation to present layers of history and effectively communicate concepts surrounding how
we deal with trauma. Often referencing traumatic events that which current society did not
encounter directly themselves, Waltz with Bashir triumphs in the struggle against ethical and visual
implications of animated form, evoking a strong emotional response in its visual style. A vector
based, frame by frame animation technique was used to present a re–enactment of the events that
took place; referencing live–action footage as visual reference for the stand–alone animation
process. The opening scene of the film sets up the dramatic visual style; as the camera tracks along,
rabid dogs run loose on the streets of Beirut. Initially just one dog running towards the camera, eyes
wide and vicious, swiftly multiplies into a pack of dogs, snarling and drooling; tearing through the
highly stylised war–torn streets. This dramatized, surrealist scene we later find is actually a visual
interpretation of a nightmare that Folman's friend Boaz has connected to his experiences from the
war in Lebanon. Typically a convention used in narrative film, Folman's process removes us from
the reality in the film because of its surrealist animated form and we become lost in the spectacle of
