The Last Emperor: Truth and Misleading In 1987, a film came into theaters across the globe about
China's last emperor. The Last Emperor, directed by Bernardo Bertolucci, shows the life of Pu–Yi
from when he enters the Forbidden City at age three to become emperor of China, to his final days
as a reformed man. The film, although it showed how China was during the Qing Dynasty in a fairly
honest light, also had its downfalls. Many problems plagues the last years of the Qing Dynasty, such
as the Republic Revolutions, opium, warlords, and the confusing relationship with Japan and it's

This caused the empress to grow an addiction and made Pu Yi look like a fool at a party. In general
Chinese society opium made workers, traders, merchants useless. With this China grew weaker as a
country, making China an easy target for other countries to come in and gain power. The warlords in
China and Japan were great examples. In the film warlords were almost a constant mention, but it
was never fully disclosed who warlords were or what their purpose was during the dramatic changes

This book is an autobiography of a man who became The Emperor of the Manchu Dynasty, at two
years of age, named Henry Pu Yi. He lived a life as an emperor up until China's government became
republic and seized his powers. Until then, he continued his life back in Tientsin and tried to
continue his legacy by being head of a Japanese puppet state. In spite of all his hard work, he still

V. Narration
After being selected as the Last Emperor of China by the ill Empress Dowager Tzu Hsi, Henry Pu yi
at his childhood lived a lavish life not knowing of what obligations will face him in growing up. At
the age of 6 in the year of 1912, China converts to republic and the Ching Dynasty was forced to
abdicate.
As Pu Yi grows up he was free to do whatever he wants, living the life of an emperor but was
locked up in the Forbidden City deprived of the modern customs. Guided by the British Tutor,
Reginald Johnston, Pu Yi became so captivated to foreigners and believed of them as the wisest and
most civilized. Thus made him interested in Western things, and came up with his English name
"Henry". He was married at 18 with two wives, Wen Hsiu and Wan Jung.
On November 5, 1924 officials entered the palace with a revision of the "Articles of Favorable
Treatment" that stated, the Emperor's position shall be abolished making Pu yi an ordinary citizen.
He was required to abandon the Forbidden City and sought asylum from the Japanese Embassy and
soon was sent to Tientsin.
It was in Tientsin that Pu Yi decided to go abroad but ended up staying there for seven years, in
which he wavered back and forth between different factions among his advisers.
In 1931, Japan occupied Machuria and Pu Yi was asked to be the Chief Executive and soon

(Riechart). Hung Liu is a Chinese woman who was born in Changchun, China in 1948. She was
born during the age which we call the Chinese Cultural Revolution, which heavily impacted her life.
She lived in China for 36 years and then left for the United States. She now resides in Oakland, CA,

The Forbidden City, also known as Zijincheng is a palace complex and was used by Emperors of
china from 1420 to 1911 A.D. With more than 8,700 rooms, 24 emperors occupied the forbidden

The Founder of the Ming Dynasty was the Hongwu Emperor. The article, 'Ancient Origins' states
that the Ming Dynasty is "A life of abuse torture and murder for thousands of women". Hongwu is
considered to be one of the most important emperors because he ordered his army to expel the

"The Last Emperor" was a very interesting film, rich in historical truth and an accurate portrayal of
past events that occurred in China during the 1900s. The story was very easy to follow and gave a
more modernized approach to teaching the impacts of historical proceedings by using the English
language but not forgetting to keep the facts in order. This approach gave me the opportunity to see
the different actors as if it were truly identical to what this time period was all about. Given that the

This shows the respect that families had for each other during this time. He greets his mother for the
first time in 7 years and doesn't recognize her face. She then talks of how she is proud of her son as
the Emperor of China. I saw it interesting how ordinary people have to turn away; they are not

Alex's dad Ted also matures greatly. When Alex and his father first witness the issues in china, Ted
is focused on getting the award winning shot of the war. Although what is happening outside is very
dangerous and scary, Ted has his mind set on getting the perfect shot and he does not care what is in

important thing to you. There are things that are way more important. At the beginning of the novel
Ted thinks his camera is the most important thing in the world, but after losing Alex and seeing how
people are watching their own family members get shot in China, he says "I realized it could've
been you Alex. All those kids about your age, shot down, bleeding in the street. Any one of them
could have been you." (273) His experiences in China make him understand that he could lose Alex
any second, and he definetly did not want that reason to be because of a camera or a picture. His
number one priority should not be his camera but it should be Alex and his loved ones. Ted takes his
experience in China and uses it to understand that family always comes

The Origins of the Forbidden City Also known as the Purple Forbidden City, the city that rose from
a troubled reign withstood natural disasters, corrupted emperors, and a constant enemy. It was the
third imperial palace built in Beijing, constructed during the 15th century. As it faced various
threats, the unity of the citizens seemed to grow stronger and the emperors became exceedingly
fervent. As it mimicked the original Imperial Palace created by the means of the Hongwu Emperor

After the construction of the Forbidden City was completed, the buildings were prepared for
religious ceremonies, imperial weddings, and regal events for the emperor and his family. It brought
joy to the people who inhabited the Forbidden City, and with these rituals set in place, the citizens
who lived within the city were united, however the renovations that Empress Dowager Cixi began
changed the layout of the city and resulted in the initial symbol to be altered. The original
architectural layout of the city was "fundamentally changed when the empress dowager Cixi
renovated the Palace of Eternal Spring and the Palace of Gathered Elegance...", states Peng. The
initial symbol, K'un, was "transformed [from] the original layout of six palace compounds into
four," and broke the shape of the symbolic trigram (Peng). This was the first action taken by the
ruler of the Forbidden City that would result in its' destruction. The trigram represented their
strength and unification, so it quite literally eroded the wholeness of the city and its citizens.
However, during the late 19th century, rebellions were being sprung up and caused difficulty for the
Empress to manage her empire. Along with Western powers quickly becoming a threat to her, she
"decided to use the Boxers to remove the foreign powers from China." She had tremendous power
over her empire at this point, as proven by the Imperial forces that joined the Boxers in their fight
against foreigners. This fight was subsequently brought to Beijing and a neighboring city named

called 故宫 (Gùgōng). The first character comes from 古, meaning ancient, and 攵, meaning to

with a man in the bathroom with his hands in the sink. Blood begins to fill the sink, and a person is
