Civil War Thesis
One of the most important wars in the US history was the Civil War. During the 1860's, a time
where slaves were property of people and they took and stripped identity away from them by buying
and selling them, whipping them and use them for cheap labor. "Most of the fighting men in that
war were neither professional soldiers nor draftees–they were volunteers. The dominant themes in
their wartime letters were homesickness and a longing for peace" (The Civil War: Why they fought).
Slaves fought for their freedom and their identity. Also the South and the North were fighting for
trade, tariffs and state rights. The South was known as the Confederate, which was mostly made of
farmers and had not much factoring. On the other hand, the North was ... Show more content on

estimated 51,000 people were killed, captured or wounded. Soldiers had a 1 of 4 chance of surviving
in this battle. There was 120 generals in this battle, nine of them were seriously wounded or killed.
According to History Net a bullet went to a house door killing a twenty year old women. She was
the only civilian killed in this battle. Gettysburg was the second invasion to the Union and was a
three days battle. Also it is known that people consider this battle was a turning point of the war
because the Union victory made the Confederate side consider to be defensive and stopped General
Lee's ambition to invade the Union territory. This battle was significant because it was probably the
costliest battle of the war but not the largest. "Confederate and Union forces came together
unexpectedly at the important crossroads town of Gettysburg. The resulting battle was the greatest
ever fought in the Western Hemisphere" (American Civil War p.29). The Union troops won The
Battle of Gettysburg. The Confederate tried to take the troops to the North but it did not work. This

Pros And Cons Of Fighting The Battle Of Shiloh
I am currently fighting the Battle of Shiloh, also known as the Battle of Pittsburg Landing. We are
located in Southwestern Tennessee. General Ulysses S. Grant has been moving us, the north, to gain
control over more land. we fighting to free slavery and i am more than honored to be here. If i had
the chance to switch sides i would not. Previous to this battle we had fought our way to many
victories. The union had gained control over Kentucky and most of Tennessee. On April 6, 1862 we
tried to gain control over the Tennessee river, we did not succeed. We were moved back two miles
and preparing to attack again. We were once weak until we met up with General Buell's army. This
allowed us to make a very surprising counterattack the next morning.

The Battle of Shiloh is also called The Battle of Pittsburg Landing and was fought April 6–7, 1862.
The battle took place in southwest Tennessee, the western theater. An army known as the Army of
Tennessee, lead by Ulysses Grant, advanced into Tennessee territory by route of the Tennessee
River. While they were camped deep in Tennessee territory the Confederate Army of Mississippi
launched a surprise attack on General Grant and his soldiers. General Albert Sidney Johnston and
his second–in–command P. G. T. Beauregard initiated the first assault on the Union troops.
Unfortunately General Johnston was mortally wounded. General Beauregard decided not to continue
the attack throughout the evening. In the morning Grant's army having been reinforced

The Battle of Shiloh: May It Never Be Forgotten
On April 5th, 1862, the fields and thickets surrounding Shiloh church was just another
peaceful backwoods landscape. Soon it would undergo a horrific transformation. The cheerful
chirping of birds would be replaced by whizzing of flying pieces of metal shot with the intent to
kill. The green grass of the hillsides would be trampled and splattered his blood and gore. Instead
of the plains being inhabited by the occasional deer, they would be the home to wild hogs
feeding on the corpses of both blue and gray indiscriminately. The Battle of Shiloh would take
this place and make it a living hell for the soldiers involved, all of the former peace just a
memory. Both sides of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The actual beginning, however, was when a Union patrol stumbled upon the
Confederates and then they began skirmishing. Eventually, when the bulk of the Confederate
army had come to the Union lines the skirmishing became a full–on charge. The Union command
was late to respond and found its soldier being continually pushed back. "Sherman too was
warned," writes Shelby Foote in his classic Civil War commentary The Civil War: A Narrative,
"but took no heed because the alarm was sounded by the same Colonel he had rebuked for crying
wolf the day before" (p. 333). He felt that way until, finally responding to the summons, had
both his aide and his hand shot by the enemy. An article on the website for the Civil War Trust
states that almost two–thirds of the Union land force was routed in this first rush (Sword).
Additionally, many Confederates slowed during this attack in order to loot the Union camps and
fill their starving stomachs with the breakfasts of those they had just driven out. With their
ferocious cries, the Confederates had overwhelmed the unprepared soldiers in blue.
Johnston hoped to use the momentum of this charge to seal the Confederacy's defeat. He
wanted to trap the Union forces using the river banks they had chosen to camp beside for
protection. Johnston spoke on his plan, saying, "they can present no greater front between those
two creeks

Essay about The American Civil War: America’s Bloodiest War
The American Civil War, known as the War Between the States' by some, was America's bloodiest
war. The Civil War consisted of over 10,000 battles between The Union Army of the North and the
South's Confederate Army, which lasted almost 4 years. The War was fought in 23 states and of the
more than 10,000 battles only about 50 were major battles. (Weider, The Civil War, 1) In this paper
the reader will learn about important dates of the war also about 4 of the bloodiest battles in the war;
the Battle of Shiloh, the Battle of Chancellorsville, the Battle of Chickamauga, and the Battle of
Gettysburg. The American Civil War had more than 650,000 casualties. (Weider, The Civil War, 1)

The Battle of Chancellorsville was a battle fought from April 30th through May 6th, 1863 in
Virginia. (Weider, Battle of Chancellorsville, 1) This battle was fought by Major General Joseph
Hooker, commander of the Union Army, and General Robert E. Lee, leader of the Confederates,
which culminated in a Confederate victory. In the Battle of Chancellorsville the Confederates
prevented an attempted flanking movement by Major General Hooker's army against the left of
General Robert E. Lee. (Weider, Battle of Chancellorsville, 2) The Battle of Chancellorsville was
the third bloodiest battle of the Civil War. With only 24,000 casualties consisting of the dead,
missing, and wounded, this battle was slightly bloodier than the Battle of Shiloh. (Weider, Battle of
Chancellorsville, 3) The Battle of Chickamauga was fought September 19th and 20th, 1863 in
Catoosa and Walker County, Georgia. (Weider, Battle of Chickamauga, 1) The Battle of
Chickamauga was fought by Union soldiers led by Major General William Rosecrans, and the
Confederate soldiers were led by General Braxton Bragg which ended with a Confederate victory.
Bragg did not get the victory he had wanted, but it was a victory nonetheless. (Weider, Battle of
Chickamauga, 5) The Battle of Chickamauga had nearly 35,000 casualties which consisted of over
6,000 soldiers missing from both sides. In the American Civil War, this battle is second only to the

Johnston hoped to defeat Grant's army before the anticipated arrival of General Buell's Army of the
Ohio. The Confederate battle lines became confused during the fierce fighting, and Grant's men
instead fell back to the northeast, in the direction of Pittsburg Landing. A Union position on a
slightly sunken road, nicknamed the "Hornet's Nest," defended by the men of Brig. Gens. Benjamin
Prentiss's and William H. L. Wallace's divisions, provided critical time for the remainder of the
Union line to stabilize under the protection of numerous artillery batteries. Wallace was mortally
wounded when the position collapsed, while several regiments from the two divisions were
eventually surrounded and surrendered. General Johnston was shot in the leg and bled to death while
personally leading an attack. Beauregard, his second in command, acknowledged how tired the army
was from the day's exertions and decided against assaulting the final Union position that

Battle of Shiloh Essay
In the short story "Shiloh" written by Bobbie Ann Mason, she expresses a theme stating that taking
life for granted causes individuals to lose sight of what is important and how people become blinded
by everyone and everything around them. Emotions take a big toll on the way a person handles a
situation and people do not necessarily compartmentalize in order to make the right decision with
ease. There are various characters represented throughout the story ranging from dynamic to round
characters. Norma Jean and Leroy Moffitt are the antagonist and protagonist, both of them are at
war with each other. Situational irony occurs when Leroy arrives home and continues to stay home
after being involved in a truck accident at work. Norma Jean is ... Show more content on

Norma Jean is presented as a dynamic character due to the fact that her attitude and outlook starts
changing towards her husband Leroy and her marriage. She went from spending time with her
husband to being an introvert. She begins enjoying her time alone and becomes very selfish. She
was strong at one point and the past just ate her up inside letting it get the best of her. All the
attention is drawn to herself and she does not take the time to see how Leroy is feeling or reacting to
this sudden behavior. In paragraph fifty four it states how Norma Jean changes into this selfish
creature that Leroy does not even know anymore after sixteen years of marriage. "Before his
accident, when Leroy came home he used to stay in the house with Norma Jean, watching TV in bed
and playing cards. She would cook fried chicken, picnic ham, chocolate pie–all his favorites. Now
he is home alone much of the time. In the mornings, Norma Jean disappears, leaving a cooling place
in the bed" (Mason paragraph 54). Norma Jean loses her father and son and now she is just letting
herself slowly drift away out of her husband's life. Norma Jean's appearance does not change much
in Leroy's eyes. She keeps up with her physical and outer appearance but its her inner self that need
massive work. Her attitude with her mother and husband starts coming off aggressive and careless.
In paragraph 110, Norma Jean's repsonse is spoken without proper mannerism.

Herman Melville's 'Shiloh : A Requiem'
Herman Melville wrote the poem "Shiloh: A Requiem". He had a challenging life, which ended as a
forgotten man. His poem, "Shiloh", was one of the many that he wrote during the Civil War. A
certain image in the poem, the swallows, is a very interesting and intriguing one, but a certain other
bird, The Mourning dove, could have been used effectively as well.
Herman Melville had an interesting life, that came with many troubles and challenges. He was born
on August 1st, 1819 to Allen and Maria Melvill of New York (Maxwell, D.E.S.). His family was a
well–respected one, then their import business fell through and they moved to Albany, New York.
Their finances were desperate. During this time they changed the spelling of their last name and
added an e, to be spelled, Melville (Maxwell, D.E.S.). In 1835 Melville was already beginning to
write, and while he was discovering writing, his family went bankrupt and moved to Lansingburgh.
In 1841 Herman Melville went on his second seafaring trip on a whaling ship called the Acushnet,
his first being the St. Lawrence. The ship set off from New Bedford, Massachusetts and set sail for
the South Seas. In June 1842, the ship stopped at the Marquesas Islands in what is now French
Polynesia (Maxwell, D.E.S.). His time there inspired his novel, "Typee" which was popular at the
time. After that trip, he joined the crew of the whaler Lucy Ann. On that voyage, he went on
adventures on which he based Typee's sequel, "Omoo". After that voyage he

to America because there were so many casualties.

The United States Civil War Essay
The United States Civil War can be considered as one of the darkest times in American history. The
Southern states were fighting for their way of life, and the Northern states were fighting to preserve
the Union. The war had begun in the year of 1861, and it would end in 1865 with the capture of
Jefferson Davis and surrender of Robert E. Lee. The war had begun at the battle of Fort Sumter.
After this battle, the newly elected Abraham Lincoln called for volunteers to join the Union forces.
In 1862, Union and Confederate forces would meet again at the battle of Fort Henry and Donelson.
With the Union succeeding at pushing the Confederate forces further back into the South, General
Grant and his army made their way down the Tennessee River. The forces would meet again at the
Battle of Shiloh and Pittsburg Landing. There have been many arguments supporting the theory that
the Confederacy did in fact win at the Battle of Shiloh. Although the Union lost more troops at this
battle, the Confederacy failed in many ways. In order to determine how exactly they failed, it is
important to study what the goal of the Confederacy was at Shiloh and whether or not they
accomplished this goal. In this essay, the Confederacy's goals for attacking Grant's troops at Shiloh
and their failure to accomplish those goals will show just how unsuccessful the Confederate army
truly was at this battle.1

The Second Phase Of The Battle Of Shiloh Essay
The second phase of the Battle of Shiloh starts as reinforcements from General Buell's Army of the
Ohio and a unit of Grant's own reserve division joined the Union Army now positioned at Pittsburg
Landing. These reinforcements added over 22,500 men to the Union lines13 bringing the total
number of Union forces to over 45,000, which is more than they had on 6 April, the first day of
fighting.14 On April 7, General Grant renewed the fighting with an aggressive counteract.15 Greatly
outnumbered (Confederate forces now around 25,000) and disorganized the Confederate forces now
under General Beauregard fought hard but eventually had to retreat to back Corinth.16 The second
phase of the Battle of Shiloh was won by General Grant and his Union forces due to two main
reasons. The first, Union troop numbers greatly outnumbered their enemy, over 45,000 to 25,000
respectively. And secondly, the reinforcements received by General Grant had not fought the day
before and were fresh and excited to fight, unlike the exhausted remaining Confederate troops.17
This was the bloodiest battle fought on American soil up to that point, with 23,746 casualties
(Union: 13,047; Confederate: 10,699).18 The Union lost more men but claimed the victory because
the Confederate Army retreated back to Corinth, Mississippi.

Civil War Battle Of Shiloh
Civil War Battle of Shiloh Scholars still debate the various causes of the U.S. Civil War (1861–
1865). However, few disagree that the issue of slavery (and the status assigned to black Americans)
had been eroding relations between Northern and Southern states from the first days of American
independence, and culminated in actual armed conflict shortly after Abraham Lincoln's first election
to the presidency in 1860 ("The American Civil War," n.d.). On April 12, 1861 Confederate troops
under General Pierre Beauregard fired on Fort Sumter (in Charleston, South Carolina) with fifty
cannons, thus initiating the beginning of the Civil War ("The U.S. Civil War," 1996). And this, of
course, was only the first of many military actions which would rage throughout the 5–year conflict.
Economics, social policies, political maneuvering, and numerous other elements caused the war and
its seemingly endless continuation. But to active combat soldiers, the importance of such issues
often paled in comparison to the struggle for survival in battle. Throughout the course of the Civil
War "Roughly 2% of the population, an estimated 620,000 men, lost their lives in the line of duty.
Taken as a percentage of today 's population, the toll would have risen as high as 6 million souls"
("Civil War Casualties, n.d.). The numerous battles fought that were responsible for this horrific
death toll included everything from small, armed, nameless skirmishes to full–blown engagements
which involved

The three probably most important battles of the Civil War were great victories, but came at a price.
The Confederate army surrendered at the battle of Vicksburg on July 4th 1863. They were sad and
ashamed after prolonged violent attacks. This was the end of one of the most brilliant military
campaigns of the war. The sad loss of Pemberton's army and the stronghold in Vicksburg on the
mighty Mississippi River was very effective in splitting the Confederacy in half.
Grants skilled and well planned military success in the West boosted his proud reputation, leading
ultimately to his appointment as the new and better General – In – Chief of the Union. When Grant's

General Grant and his army of forty–two thousand men had camped along the river. The
Confederates second stupid leader, General Albert Sidney Johnston said, "I would fight him if he

hours. The tired and hungry Confederate Army was still able to catch Grant's army by surprise.
Eight of ten union soldiers at Shiloh had never fought before. At the end of the Battle of Shiloh
twenty–four thousand men were dead, wounded, or captured. On April 25, 1862 Union forces under
David Farragut captured New Orleans, Louisiana the largest city in the South. Farragut, who was of
Spanish descent grew up in the South but remained loyal to the North. The capture of New Orleans
was the key to getting the mighty and powerful Mississippi River. The North was able to cut the
supply lines, cut the water highway travel down, and cut states away from the country.
The capture of mighty and powerful Mississippi River was the result of three of the battles of the

supported seizure of rebel property and the execution and exile of Confederate leaders. He served

differed from his radical colleagues, supporting moderation towards defeated Confederates. He had
become an expert on financial matters by serving in various key committees. He opposed any effort
to inflate money supplies.
James Garfield, overall, had a big impact on the Civil War. He was known for his bravery during the
Battle of Middle Creek and the Battle of Chickamauga. He is responsible for multiple Union
victories and gained control of many patches of Confederate soil. Without Garfield, the war may
have been more depressing for the Union, and may have ended much slower than it did.
After the war, Garfield was in the running for president. In 1880, Garfield defeated General Winfield
Scott Hancock by about 10,000 votes. Garfield's short time as president was mostly spent in
organization of his cabinet and political maneuvers. On July 2, 1881, an angry attorney who was

Mission Command As A Military Leader
Mission Command is a military leader's guide to being an effective and reasonable leader
maintaining both command and control of garrison and wartime environments. Mission Command
is guided by six principles beginning with "build cohesive teams through mutual trust, create shared
understanding, provide a clear commander's intent, exercise disciplined initiative, use mission
orders, and accept prudent risk"( 3. Army Staff. "Mission Command." Fort Benning, Maneuver
Center of Excellence). These six principles are what Mission Command is built around and they
allow leaders to reach their full potential, if adhered to properly. The problem is that leaders believe
they are following these principles, when in reality their subordinates may not see it the same way.
The principles that show the biggest issues would be shared understanding, and a clear commander's
intent. Creating a shared understanding and providing a clear commander's intent really go together,
because without one you cannot have the other. The problem with these principles is that what is
clear to one subordinate or individual is not clear to another, not everyone has the same reading
comprehension skills or the same train of thought. It has been discussed numerous times throughout
the years about how to use orders and a commander's intent that gives orders without directly saying
so, or in other words, implied tasks. In combat arms military occupational specialties, enlisted

History of the Battle of Shiloh
Introduction The Battle of Shiloh is historically known as one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil
War. Part of the Western Campaign, Shiloh came on the heels of Union victories at Fort Henry and
Fort Donelson, primarily as a Confederate attempt to halt the Union's advance into the deep South.
Though causes of the Union victory at Shiloh may be disputed, the significance of this Battle to the
War's outcome is undeniable. Analysis When, Where and Why the Battle of Shiloh Took Place The
Battle of Shiloh took place on April 6–7, 1862 (Daniel, 1997, p. 319) in southern Tennessee's Hardin
County, particularly at Pittsburg Landing (Groom, 2012, p. 41). The short answer to why this Battle
took place is that the Confederacy wanted to stop the Union's advance far into Tennessee and
eventually into Mississippi by a surprise attack on Ulysses S. Grant's "Army of the Tennessee"
before Union Major General Don Carlos Buell's "Army of the Ohio" could arrive and join Grant's
forces (Groom, 2012, p. 141). The long answer to why this Battle took place can be found in the two
prior Confederate losses at Fort Henry and Fort Donelson in February, 1862, and the consequences
of those losses. The captures of Fort Henry and Fort Donelson were the first two Union victories
since the beginning of the War on April 12, 1861 (Woodworth, 2011, p. 89). The Union capture of
Fort Henry in western Tennessee on February 6, 1862 allowed Union forces to move 12 miles east
overland to Fort Donelson

important victory for the Union, but a point that changed the dynamics behind soldiers' fighting.

The information that Bragg recorded is much different from many of the other primary sources. He
received information that was more accurate and realized that the Confederates did not have a
victory at Shiloh. Bragg wrote that Beauregard fell back to Corinth. He goes on to state,
"Reinforcements had been rec'd by the enemy and that he [Beauregard] had not been able to secure
all the artillery & ammunition which they lost in the battle." This shows how the Confederacy has
failed to complete their objective of driving back the Union army before it was reinforced. It also
mentions how they could not secure the Union's artillery and ammunition because they were driven
back to Corinth on the second day. The information that Thomas Bragg received is accurate from a
factual standpoint. One of the possible reasons the information he received was good was because of
his position in the Confederate government. Information was most likely received directly from
officers and not clouded by rumors or speculations and views of soldiers. Braggs perspective and
understanding of the Battle of Shiloh is much more broad as well.
The Battle of Shiloh not only was a decisive battle in the early civil war, but it also changed how
soldiers regarded bravery and honor on the battlefield. Cyrus F. Boyd describes his late arrival to

The Battle of Shiloh took place on April 6ththrough the 7th in 1862 in the southwestern Tennessee
region. The Confederate General Albert Sidney Johnston, commander of the confederate forces in
the Western Theater wanted to defeat the Union Major General Grant's army before it could be
reinforced by Major General Don Carlos Buell's Army of Ohio which was marching from Nashville.
Confederate General Johnston ordered a surprise attack on Grant's encampment which was located

The Drummer Boy Of Shiloh Analysis
Boom!! A loud noise struck out of nowhere. I think these are the sounds of war. I don't know what to
do this reminds me of The Battle of Shiloh that I have to fight in at such an early age. This is about a
boy named Joby in the story The drummer Boy of Shiloh by Ray Bradbury. Joby is a young boy
about to go and fight in the battle of shiloh and he is very afraid of what may happen to him and one
night him and a general had a talk because the general heard Joby crying.
Joby is only 14 years old and was about to go to battle. Kids back then had to go fight they had no
choice. He was very young because in the story the author describes it by saying"A moth brushed
his face, but it was peach blossom. A peach blossom flicked him, but it was a moth."The peach is a
great symbol to describe how Joby looks.Joby is scared because he does not know what is going to
happen to him while in the battle. He asks himself why does a kid so young like him have to go fight
in the battle. The peach is a great symbol to describe joby's looks.
Joby has a special job in the story. He is the little boy who starts the battle with his drum and two
sticks. Joby has to get the soldiers ready to fight and go into the battle so he must beat at a steady
pace. Joby is an important person in the battle of shiloh. The drum that Joby beats is a symbol it
represents the hearts ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The story had lots of real events and symbols to describe the events . The drum and the peach are
very important to know about because this lets you know about the boy and how young he was and
his job. He was also so little going to battle and some people could find that very hard to believe but
then when they read the story they will know for themselves. Joby and the general is important in
this story to know about because the general was like jobys guide to go on and don't worry. You

The American Civil War Is No Exception
Every war has at least one pivotal point that begs the question, "What if this event had happened
differently?" The American Civil War is no exception. Many Southerners made claims that the
winning of the Battle of Shiloh could have won the entire war for the Confederacy. Because they
lost, however, debate is still had about who is really to blame for the failure at Shiloh. Many try to
pinpoint the blame to one specific factor whether that be the leadership under General Pierre
Gustave Toutant Beauregard following General Albert Sidney Johnston's death, the intel that was far
below par, or the equipment the Confederate soldiers had to use. In reality, it was a combination
between all these factors that would seal the Confederates' fate. ... Show more content on

On April 3, Gen. Johnston mobilized his troops and marched towards Pittsburg Landing where they
arrived on April 6 because of road and whether conditions. At 5:00 AM, Johnston launched a
surprise attack on the unsuspecting Union camps. Because the divisions that had little to no
experience were in the area where the attack was first made, the Confederates quickly broke through
many Union lines successfully and wreaked havoc. They stormed the camps and slaughtered many
of these men in their tents. The Union forces were pushed back at their flanks. One line, however,
stood firm against the Confederate onslaught. General Benjamin M. Prentiss held his line and did
not allow the Confederates to break through while fighting in a sunken road that is estimated to be
about 3 feet deep in what is known as the "The Hornet's Nest" while waiting for reinforcements.
By the end of the first day of fighting, it seemed clear that the Confederates dominated the North by
inflicting a high number of casualties and had nearly wiped out Grant's entire force. The South
suffered an even more monumental blow that day in the death of General Albert Sidney Johnston.
Johnston was fatally shot in the leg just outside the "Hornet's Nest" and bled to death shortly
thereafter. As a four–star general, he is still the highest ranking officer killed in

Analysis Of The Battle Of Shiloh
For my battle analysis assignment, I have chosen to examine the battle of Shiloh. This battle began
April 6 – 7 1862, in the Pittsburg Landing area of Tennessee. In Hebrew Shiloh, means "peace"
nonetheless, this battlefield was far from a place of peace from April 6–7 1862. This battle was the
bloodiest civil war battle to date and occurred between the Union and Confederate armies. Having
analyzed the battle from multiple sources, I have discovered a number of operational, tactical, and
logistical mistakes that contributed to the Confederate losses suffered. My sources include
documentaries, historical videos, books, and articles from historians and civil war experts who have
spent their lives studying and dissecting the civil war, its battles, commanders, and tactics. As part of
my analysis, I will highlight the Confederate mistakes that could have produced a different outcome
of this historical battle.
In setting the stage for the battle of Shiloh let us first briefly discuss the civil war. The civil war
began with its first battle on 12 April, 1861 at Fort Sumter, South Carolina to the last battle at
Anderson, South Carolina on May 1, 1865 (Civil War Trust , 2014 ) between the Union and
Confederate Armies. The civil war consisted of nearly 50 major battles; the battle of Shiloh was the
first scandalous and essentially paramount battle. (Civil War Battles, 2016) The armies of the north
were fighting to reunite the nation, while the armies of the south were fighting

The Drummer Boy Of Shiloh Essay
The poem " The Drummer Boy of Shiloh" symbolizes loss of innocence, death, and gain from the
civil war. On April 6, 1862 The Battle of Shiloh in the Civil War started. In the two days of fighting
over 23,000 soldiers died. At the time it was the bloodiest battle in American history. In this battle
the Drummer Boy represents youth and the heart beat. The general represents the father and
experience. The drum represents a useless toy. The peach tree represents life and death. Shiloh
represents the loss and gain. Owl Creek represents the dead and the loss of innocence. "The
Drummer Boy of Shiloh" if about a young boy who is the Drummer for the Battle of Palito Ranch. It
also focuses on the general of the army. The Drummer Boy at first thought he was useless, but then

The drum is thought of as a useless toy, but I believe it is a useless toy unless used. Any instrument
even in precaution is just a sound until used by a person with emotion and a soul. Then it becomes
something greater than the useless toy the drum is. Although he can't fight with the drum it is the
most important tool for him to have. The peach tree at the beginning represents life because the
tree's fruit is ripe and full of life. Towards the end, however, the tree has a fallen leaf this represents
the death and loss of the tree. The death and the loss of the tree represents the death and loss of
soldiers. The beginning also views the tree as innocents before the war. The tree at the end
represents the blood shed and loss of innocence. The drum represents a useless toy until used by a

Shiloh A Requiem Essay
Unit 5 Culminating Writing Assignment
The Civil War is one of the most central events in American History, determining what kind of
nation it would be. Northern victory preserved the United States as one nation and ended slavery.
Shiloh got its name from the Shiloh Meeting House, a sight of religious significance of the first
battle of the American Civil War. The Battle of Shiloh took place from April 6 to April 7 of 1862,
and got its name from the nearby church. "Shiloh–A Requiem" by Herman Melville is an elegy that
uses an assortment of literary techniques, structure, and symbolism to exemplify the cruelty of the
Civil War. "The Drummer Boy of Shiloh" written by Ray Bradbury takes place during the Civil War.
It tells the story of a young boy named Joby, and describes his journey of being a drummer boy
using variations of meaning and tone.
"Shiloh–A Requiem," starts by displaying Shiloh as a "forest field" that has been cleared and is
trying to return to its previous state. Melville uses the event of when America was left isolated
during the struggle and suffered in the weary church, to state, "The church so lone, the log–built

There is a consistency that shows the war creates a confusion and a type of disorganization that can
not be solved easily. The articulation of this poem gives it a substantial understanding that reinforces
the idea of grieving the dead, but also gives a comparison between both life and war. "Shiloh– A
Requiem" written by Herman Melville has a deep meaning that portrays the aftermath of the Battle
of Shiloh. The tone, word choice, imagery, metaphors, and rhyme of the poem all contribute to the
idea that war is a forceful act of equalizing. It emphasizes the idea that war is a baffling and
physically damaging and at the end of the war, all the soldier has left to deal with is the aftermath of

One Kind Of Officer Theme
Throughout Bierce's many short stories, he focuses on many themes. Two of these themes are fate
and the incapability of senior officers. In two stories, these themes feature prominently. In both,
junior officers are forced to obey the orders of their commander without question. The actions of the
junior officers often lead to a fateful conclusion. In "One Kind of Officer," Bierce presents the story
of Captain Ransome, a Union artillery captain. At the outset, Ransome is instructed: "it is not
permitted to you to know anything. It is sufficient that you obey my order – which permit me to
repeat. If you perceive any movement of troops in your front you are to open fire" (105). As
Ransome returns to his battery, a thick fog "closed in about him like a visible doom" (105). The
"mist had isolated him [Captain Ransome] as completely as if he hand been in the heart of the
desert" (108). When news comes from the pickets that the enemy is approaching, Captain Ransome
looks deeply into the fog. "A slight pallor came into his face, a slight compression affected the lines
of his lips" (109). This slight show of emotion shows that Ransome knew that the approaching
soldiers were in fact not Confederates, but a Union brigade. Under orders, Ransome has no choice
but to commence firing. When Lieutenant Price protests Ransome's actions, Ransome repeats
General Cameron's orders: "it is not permitted to you to know anything. It is sufficient that you obey
my orders" (111). When

Ulysses S. Grant      American General and 18th President of the
United States of America, Ulysses S. Grant, was a master war strategist who won the first major

military leadership for Grant. While in office from 1869–1877 Grant scarcely attempted to control

Analysis Of The Story ' Shiloh ' By Bobbie Ann Mason
Symbolism in Shiloh In the short story "Shiloh", written by Bobbie Ann Mason, symbolism is
widely used. The story has several different messages behind the symbols used throughout the story.
The log cabin, the Civil War battle of Shiloh, the dust ruffle and a flock of birds are all similes used
to foreshadow and help readers further understand. Although the symbols have different messages,
they all tie together to produce the conclusion of the whole story. First, let's discuss the biggest
simile that sticks out the most throughout the story, the log cabin. Mason writes about a log cabin
that Leroy soon becomes obsessed and fixated with making for Norma Jean. The log cabin
represents Leroy and Norma Jean's marriage. For Leroy, the log cabin symbolizes the importance of
a strong marriage, built on a solid foundation from the ground up by the man of the relationship.
Although many times throughout the story, Norma Jean clearly tells him she isn't interested in living
in a cabin and hates the idea of it. It seems as if anytime Leroy is at a loss for words, he falls back to
the log cabin conversation. Him clinging on and refusing to give up the idea of building the cabin
for Norma Jean represents how he also won't give up on his wife or marriage. The log cabin is
connected to the next symbol of the story, Shiloh, the Civil War Battle site. Mabel, Norma Jean's
mother, is constantly trying to talk her daughter and son–in–law to go visit the town from basically

Military Leadership : No Control Group Exists
Military leadership is forever difficult to umpire as no control group exists. One may see the verdict
of hindsight view passive strategy unfavorably, like General George McClellan who built the Union
army in the early stages of the war but was a lethargic and fearful field commander who seemed
incapable of gathering the courage to assertively take on Confederate General Robert E. Lee, an
American soldier best known for commanding the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia; others
are indicted on being too reckless. Shelby Foote, an American historian and novelist, describes the

In February of 1862, Ulysses S. Grant took control of all union forces following his impressive
governance over the reinforced Confederates under Brigadier General Gideon J. Pillow at the battle
of Fort Donelson (Grant 149). Ultimately, he developed a grand strategy to defeat the Confederacy
and in the end, with much resistance, succeeded. Grant began to greatly take advantage of the
Northern upper hand in resources, transforming the war into a bloody but efficient battle of attrition.
He in this manner revived the Northern war exertion and saw it through to its finish, with General
Robert Lee surrendering on April 9, 1865, at the McLean House in Appomattox, Virginia (329). The
battle of Shiloh (April 6–7, 1862), the Civil War's first catastrophically bloody battle, serves as an
illustration of Grant's military prowess. The implementation of sound tactics with the advantages
provided to him explicitly in Shiloh and throughout the American Civil War, along with his sincere
concern and belief in his troops, result in victory here and in the conflict altogether.
Following defeats at Fort Henry and Donelson, Confederate Gen. Albert Sidney Johnston,
commander of the western armies within the Western Department, withdrew to Corinth, Mississippi
in order to start preparing for an offensive maneuver against Grant (150). He was eager to catch

A Blaze Of Glory : The Battle Of Shiloh
Hello, and today I am doing a report on a historical fiction book, and I chose this book, A Blaze of
Glory. First, I will be overviewing the setting. The book mainly takes place in Southwest Tennessee
with some events taking place in Northeastern Mississippi. However, the main action happens in
Shiloh, Tennessee, where the Battle of Shiloh takes place, the main event of the book. To be more
specific, the Battle of Shiloh takes place at Pittsburg Landing, which is very close to Shiloh. (The
Battle of Shiloh is also known as the battle of Pittsburg Landing). The events of the book take place
from February 22, 1862, to April 28, 1862, during the Civil War. (The dates are in the book at the
beginning of each chapter). However, the main battle of the book, the Battle of Shiloh, takes place
on April 6–April 7. That is where and when my book, A Blaze of Glory, takes place.
Personally, I would recommend my book, A Blaze of Glory, to people who like reading about
history or want to learn more about the Civil War. However, if you do not like reading long and
sometimes tedious books, this is not the book for you. There is not much action in the book, but
small part of the book where there is action is excellent. Additionally, the majority of the book is
very informative, descriptive, and actually makes you feel like you are taking part. However, it takes
around 200 pages for the action to start, and the book can be lengthy at some points. That is why I
would recommend my book,

Essay on Shelby Foote's Shiloh
Shelby Foote's Shiloh
In the novel Shiloh, historian and Civil War expert Shelby Foote delivers a spare, unflinching
account of the battle of Shiloh, which was fought over the course of two days in April 1862. By
mirroring the troops' movements through the woods of Tennessee with the activity of each soldier's
mind, Foote offers the reader a broad perspective of the battle and a detailed view of the issues
behind it. The battle becomes tangible as Foote interweaves the observations of Union and
Confederate officers, simple foot soldiers, brave men, and cowards and describes the roar of the
muskets and the haze of the gun smoke. The author's vivid storytelling creates a rich chronicle of a
pivotal battle in American history.

This is a really small book (just over 200 pages) and while the images are graphic and the characters
accessable, the author just doesn't have the space to spread out and let the reader develop a real
emotional response to these characters and their actions. Nor is he able to provide any perspective
on the battle and what it means – even for the individual characters he has presented.
I think it helps to have read the section in his narrative history of the Civil War that deals with
Shiloh. But this means that the novel doesn't really stand on its own. The reader must come equiped
with prior knowledge or be left with questions that will require some research. Perhaps not bad, but
I would have preferred a more comprehensive treatment – something more like Tom Wicker's Unto
This Hour. That's just personal taste. Foote did what he intended and did it well. I can't help it if I
just want more.
Fans of Shelby Foote's massive three volume Narrative History of the Civil War, (and I am the
work's biggest fan), will surely find something they like in Foote's earlier novel about the battle of
Shiloh. I couldn't help thinking, however, that Foote's real calling is as historian and commentator,
and his effort to write a novel here seems to be a bit off the mark.
Perhaps unfairly, novels of the Civil War tend to get compared to Michael Shaara's brilliant Killer
Angels, a comparison that does not bode

The dominant themes in their wartime letters were homesickness and a longing for peace" (The Civil War: Why they fought). Slaves fought for their freedom and their identity. Also the South and the North were fighting for trade, tariffs and state rights. The South was known as the Confederate, which was mostly made of farmers and had not much factoring. The Battle Of Shiloh : May It Never Be Forgotten The Battle of Shiloh: May It Never Be Forgotten On April 5th, 1862, the fields and thickets surrounding Shiloh church was just another peaceful backwoods landscape. Soon it would undergo a horrific transformation. The cheerful chirping of birds would be replaced by whizzing of flying pieces of metal shot with the intent to kill. The green grass of the hillsides would be trampled and splattered his blood and gore. Instead of the plains being inhabited by the occasional deer, they would be the home to wild hogs feeding on the corpses of both blue and gray indiscriminately. The Battle of Shiloh would take this place and make it a living hell for the soldiers involved, all of the former peace just a memory. Both sides of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Eventually, when the bulk of the Confederate army had come to the Union lines the skirmishing became a full–on charge. The Union command was late to respond and found its soldier being continually pushed back. "Sherman too was warned," writes Shelby Foote in his classic Civil War commentary The Civil War: A Narrative, "but took no heed because the alarm was sounded by the same Colonel he had rebuked for crying wolf the day before" (p. 333). He felt that way until, finally responding to the summons, had both his aide and his hand shot by the enemy. An article on the website for the Civil War Trust states that almost two–thirds of the Union land force was routed in this first rush (Sword).

He wanted to trap the Union forces using the river banks they had chosen to camp beside for protection. Johnston spoke on his plan, saying, "they can present no greater front between those two creeks ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 30. Battle of Shiloh Essay In the short story "Shiloh" written by Bobbie Ann Mason, she expresses a theme stating that taking life for granted causes individuals to lose sight of what is important and how people become blinded by everyone and everything around them. Emotions take a big toll on the way a person handles a situation and people do not necessarily compartmentalize in order to make the right decision with ease. There are various characters represented throughout the story ranging from dynamic to round characters. Norma Jean and Leroy Moffitt are the antagonist and protagonist, both of them are at war with each other. Situational irony occurs when Leroy arrives home and continues to stay home after being involved in a truck accident at work. Norma Jean is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Norma Jean is presented as a dynamic character due to the fact that her attitude and outlook starts changing towards her husband Leroy and her marriage. She went from spending time with her husband to being an introvert. She begins enjoying her time alone and becomes very selfish. She was strong at one point and the past just ate her up inside letting it get the best of her. All the attention is drawn to herself and she does not take the time to see how Leroy is feeling or reacting to this sudden behavior. In paragraph fifty four it states how Norma Jean changes into this selfish creature that Leroy does not even know anymore after sixteen years of marriage. "Before his accident, when Leroy came home he used to stay in the house with Norma Jean, watching TV in bed and playing cards. She would cook fried chicken, picnic ham, chocolate pie–all his favorites. Now he is home alone much of the time. In the mornings, Norma Jean disappears, leaving a cooling place in the bed" (Mason paragraph 54). Norma Jean loses her father and son and now she is just letting herself slowly drift away out of her husband's life. Norma Jean's appearance does not change much in Leroy's eyes. She keeps up with her physical and outer appearance but its her inner self that need massive work. Her attitude with her mother and husband starts coming off aggressive and careless. In paragraph 110, Norma Jean's repsonse is spoken without proper mannerism. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A certain image in the poem, the swallows, is a very interesting and intriguing one, but a certain other bird, The Mourning dove, could have been used effectively as well. Herman Melville had an interesting life, that came with many troubles and challenges. He was born on August 1st, 1819 to Allen and Maria Melvill of New York (Maxwell, D.E.S.). His family was a well–respected one, then their import business fell through and they moved to Albany, New York. Their finances were desperate. During this time they changed the spelling of their last name and added an e, to be spelled, Melville (Maxwell, D.E.S.). In 1835 Melville was already beginning to write, and while he was discovering writing, his family went bankrupt and moved to Lansingburgh. In 1841 Herman Melville went on his second seafaring trip on a whaling ship called the Acushnet, his first being the St. Lawrence. The ship set off from New Bedford, Massachusetts and set sail for the South Seas. In June 1842, the ship stopped at the Marquesas Islands in what is now French Polynesia (Maxwell, D.E.S.). His time there inspired his novel, "Typee" which was popular at the time. After that trip, he joined the crew of the whaler Lucy Ann. On that voyage, he went on adventures on which he based Typee's sequel, "Omoo". After that voyage he ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

There are many reasons that they are important and why we talk about them until this day. These two battles are from different times in history. The battle of Bunker Hill is a battle from the Revolutionary War, and the Battle of Shiloh is from the Civil War. These battles were significant to America because there were so many casualties. The battle of Shiloh, also known as Pittsburg Landing, happened on the morning of April 6th, 1862. It started off with the Confederates causing a surprise attack on the North. • 46. The United States Civil War Essay The United States Civil War can be considered as one of the darkest times in American history. The Southern states were fighting for their way of life, and the Northern states were fighting to preserve the Union. The war had begun in the year of 1861, and it would end in 1865 with the capture of Jefferson Davis and surrender of Robert E. Lee. The war had begun at the battle of Fort Sumter. After this battle, the newly elected Abraham Lincoln called for volunteers to join the Union forces. In 1862, Union and Confederate forces would meet again at the battle of Fort Henry and Donelson. With the Union succeeding at pushing the Confederate forces further back into the South, General Grant and his army made their way down the Tennessee River. The forces would meet again at the Battle of Shiloh and Pittsburg Landing. There have been many arguments supporting the theory that the Confederacy did in fact win at the Battle of Shiloh. Although the Union lost more troops at this battle, the Confederacy failed in many ways. In order to determine how exactly they failed, it is important to study what the goal of the Confederacy was at Shiloh and whether or not they accomplished this goal. In this essay, the Confederacy's goals for attacking Grant's troops at Shiloh and their failure to accomplish those goals will show just how unsuccessful the Confederate army truly was at this battle.1 There had been decades of tension between the Southern and Northern states of America. The Second Phase Of The Battle Of Shiloh Essay The second phase of the Battle of Shiloh starts as reinforcements from General Buell's Army of the Ohio and a unit of Grant's own reserve division joined the Union Army now positioned at Pittsburg Landing. These reinforcements added over 22,500 men to the Union lines13 bringing the total number of Union forces to over 45,000, which is more than they had on 6 April, the first day of fighting.14 On April 7, General Grant renewed the fighting with an aggressive counteract.15 Greatly outnumbered (Confederate forces now around 25,000) and disorganized the Confederate forces now under General Beauregard fought hard but eventually had to retreat to back Corinth.16 The second phase of the Battle of Shiloh was won by General Grant and his Union forces due to two main reasons. The first, Union troop numbers greatly outnumbered their enemy, over 45,000 to 25,000 respectively. And secondly, the reinforcements received by General Grant had not fought the day before and were fresh and excited to fight, unlike the exhausted remaining Confederate troops.17 This was the bloodiest battle fought on American soil up to that point, with 23,746 casualties (Union: 13,047; Confederate: 10,699).18 The Union lost more men but claimed the victory because the Confederate Army retreated back to Corinth, Mississippi. • 54. Civil War Battle Of Shiloh Civil War Battle of Shiloh Scholars still debate the various causes of the U.S. Civil War (1861– 1865). However, few disagree that the issue of slavery (and the status assigned to black Americans) had been eroding relations between Northern and Southern states from the first days of American independence, and culminated in actual armed conflict shortly after Abraham Lincoln's first election to the presidency in 1860 ("The American Civil War," n.d.). On April 12, 1861 Confederate troops under General Pierre Beauregard fired on Fort Sumter (in Charleston, South Carolina) with fifty cannons, thus initiating the beginning of the Civil War ("The U.S. Civil War," 1996). And this, of course, was only the first of many military actions which would rage throughout the 5–year conflict. Economics, social policies, political maneuvering, and numerous other elements caused the war and its seemingly endless continuation. But to active combat soldiers, the importance of such issues often paled in comparison to the struggle for survival in battle. Throughout the course of the Civil War "Roughly 2% of the population, an estimated 620,000 men, lost their lives in the line of duty. Taken as a percentage of today 's population, the toll would have risen as high as 6 million souls" ("Civil War Casualties, n.d.). The numerous battles fought that were responsible for this horrific death toll included everything from small, armed, nameless skirmishes to full–blown engagements which involved ... The Confederate army surrendered at the battle of Vicksburg on July 4th 1863. They were sad and ashamed after prolonged violent attacks. This was the end of one of the most brilliant military campaigns of the war. The sad loss of Pemberton's army and the stronghold in Vicksburg on the mighty Mississippi River was very effective in splitting the Confederacy in half. Eight of ten union soldiers at Shiloh had never fought before. At the end of the Battle of Shiloh twenty–four thousand men were dead, wounded, or captured. On April 25, 1862 Union forces under David Farragut captured New Orleans, Louisiana the largest city in the South. Farragut, who was of Spanish descent grew up in the South but remained loyal to the North. The capture of New Orleans was the key to getting the mighty and powerful Mississippi River. • 66. Mission Command As A Military Leader Mission Command is a military leader's guide to being an effective and reasonable leader maintaining both command and control of garrison and wartime environments. Mission Command is guided by six principles beginning with "build cohesive teams through mutual trust, create shared understanding, provide a clear commander's intent, exercise disciplined initiative, use mission orders, and accept prudent risk"( 3. Army Staff. "Mission Command." Fort Benning, Maneuver Center of Excellence). These six principles are what Mission Command is built around and they allow leaders to reach their full potential, if adhered to properly. The problem is that leaders believe they are following these principles, when in reality their subordinates may not see it the same way. The principles that show the biggest issues would be shared understanding, and a clear commander's intent. Creating a shared understanding and providing a clear commander's intent really go together, because without one you cannot have the other. The problem with these principles is that what is clear to one subordinate or individual is not clear to another, not everyone has the same reading comprehension skills or the same train of thought. It has been discussed numerous times throughout the years about how to use orders and a commander's intent that gives orders without directly saying so, or in other words, implied tasks. • 70. History of the Battle of Shiloh Introduction The Battle of Shiloh is historically known as one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War. Part of the Western Campaign, Shiloh came on the heels of Union victories at Fort Henry and Fort Donelson, primarily as a Confederate attempt to halt the Union's advance into the deep South. Though causes of the Union victory at Shiloh may be disputed, the significance of this Battle to the War's outcome is undeniable. Analysis When, Where and Why the Battle of Shiloh Took Place The Battle of Shiloh took place on April 6–7, 1862 (Daniel, 1997, p. 319) in southern Tennessee's Hardin County, particularly at Pittsburg Landing (Groom, 2012, p. 41). The short answer to why this Battle took place is that the Confederacy wanted to stop the Union's advance far into Tennessee and eventually into Mississippi by a surprise attack on Ulysses S. Grant's "Army of the Tennessee" before Union Major General Don Carlos Buell's "Army of the Ohio" could arrive and join Grant's forces (Groom, 2012, p. 141). The long answer to why this Battle took place can be found in the two prior Confederate losses at Fort Henry and Fort Donelson in February, 1862, and the consequences of those losses. The captures of Fort Henry and Fort Donelson were the first two Union victories since the beginning of the War on April 12, 1861 (Woodworth, 2011, p. 89). The Union capture of Fort Henry in western Tennessee on February 6, 1862 allowed Union forces to move 12 miles east overland to Fort Donelson ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The information that Bragg recorded is much different from many of the other primary sources. He received information that was more accurate and realized that the Confederates did not have a victory at Shiloh. Bragg wrote that Beauregard fell back to Corinth. He goes on to state, "Reinforcements had been rec'd by the enemy and that he [Beauregard] had not been able to secure all the artillery & ammunition which they lost in the battle." This shows how the Confederacy has failed to complete their objective of driving back the Union army before it was reinforced. It also mentions how they could not secure the Union's artillery and ammunition because they were driven back to Corinth on the second day. The information that Thomas Bragg received is accurate from a factual standpoint. One of the possible reasons the information he received was good was because of his position in the Confederate government. Information was most likely received directly from officers and not clouded by rumors or speculations and views of soldiers. Braggs perspective and understanding of the Battle of Shiloh is much more broad as well. Many Southerners made claims that the winning of the Battle of Shiloh could have won the entire war for the Confederacy. Because they lost, however, debate is still had about who is really to blame for the failure at Shiloh. Many try to pinpoint the blame to one specific factor whether that be the leadership under General Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard following General Albert Sidney Johnston's death, the intel that was far below par, or the equipment the Confederate soldiers had to use. Johnston mobilized his troops and marched towards Pittsburg Landing where they arrived on April 6 because of road and whether conditions. At 5:00 AM, Johnston launched a surprise attack on the unsuspecting Union camps. Because the divisions that had little to no experience were in the area where the attack was first made, the Confederates quickly broke through many Union lines successfully and wreaked havoc. They stormed the camps and slaughtered many of these men in their tents. The Union forces were pushed back at their flanks. One line, however, stood firm against the Confederate onslaught. General Benjamin M. Prentiss held his line and did not allow the Confederates to break through while fighting in a sunken road that is estimated to be about 3 feet deep in what is known as the "The Hornet's Nest" while waiting for reinforcements. By the end of the first day of fighting, it seemed clear that the Confederates dominated the North by inflicting a high number of casualties and had nearly wiped out Grant's entire force. This battle began April 6 – 7 1862, in the Pittsburg Landing area of Tennessee. In Hebrew Shiloh, means "peace" nonetheless, this battlefield was far from a place of peace from April 6–7 1862. This battle was the bloodiest civil war battle to date and occurred between the Union and Confederate armies. Having analyzed the battle from multiple sources, I have discovered a number of operational, tactical, and logistical mistakes that contributed to the Confederate losses suffered. My sources include documentaries, historical videos, books, and articles from historians and civil war experts who have spent their lives studying and dissecting the civil war, its battles, commanders, and tactics. As part of my analysis, I will highlight the Confederate mistakes that could have produced a different outcome of this historical battle. In setting the stage for the battle of Shiloh let us first briefly discuss the civil war. The civil war began with its first battle on 12 April, 1861 at Fort Sumter, South Carolina to the last battle at Anderson, South Carolina on May 1, 1865 (Civil War Trust , 2014 ) between the Union and Confederate Armies. Northern victory preserved the United States as one nation and ended slavery. The Battle of Shiloh took place from April 6 to April 7 of 1862, and got its name from the nearby church. "Shiloh–A Requiem" by Herman Melville is an elegy that uses an assortment of literary techniques, structure, and symbolism to exemplify the cruelty of the Civil War. "The Drummer Boy of Shiloh" written by Ray Bradbury takes place during the Civil War. It tells the story of a young boy named Joby, and describes his journey of being a drummer boy using variations of meaning and tone. "Shiloh–A Requiem," starts by displaying Shiloh as a "forest field" that has been cleared and is trying to return to its previous state. • 106. One Kind Of Officer Theme Throughout Bierce's many short stories, he focuses on many themes. Two of these themes are fate and the incapability of senior officers. In two stories, these themes feature prominently. In both, junior officers are forced to obey the orders of their commander without question. The actions of the junior officers often lead to a fateful conclusion. In "One Kind of Officer," Bierce presents the story of Captain Ransome, a Union artillery captain. At the outset, Ransome is instructed: "it is not permitted to you to know anything. It is sufficient that you obey my order – which permit me to repeat. If you perceive any movement of troops in your front you are to open fire" (105). As Ransome returns to his battery, a thick fog "closed in about him like a visible doom" (105). The "mist had isolated him [Captain Ransome] as completely as if he hand been in the heart of the desert" (108). When news comes from the pickets that the enemy is approaching, Captain Ransome looks deeply into the fog. "A slight pallor came into his face, a slight compression affected the lines of his lips" (109). This slight show of emotion shows that Ransome knew that the approaching soldiers were in fact not Confederates, but a Union brigade. Under orders, Ransome has no choice but to commence firing. When Lieutenant Price protests Ransome's actions, Ransome repeats General Cameron's orders: "it is not permitted to you to know anything. It is sufficient that you obey my orders" (111). When ... Grant, was a master war strategist who won the first major Union victories during the Civil War; however, political leadership proved to be far different from military leadership for Grant. While in office from 1869–1877 Grant scarcely attempted to control events, made injudicious appointments to public office, and had official corruption taint his administration, although Grant himself was never said to be actually have been involved in this corruption.      'The military life had no charms for me,'; Grant said later. Only a few days after he assumed his new command, he occupied Paducah, Kentucky at the strategic junction of the Ohio and Tennessee Rivers. On November 7th he attacked the Confederates at Belmont, MO in an assault that was neither well planned nor well executed. The arrival of Confederate reinforcements compelled Grant to retreat.      'Unconditional Surrender'; Grant became prominent in the nation in 1862 when he captured forts Donelson and Henry within twenty days and captured over 14,000 Confederate troops in the process.      Grant's next important battle was at Shiloh, or Pittsburgh Landing, Tennessee on April 6th and 7th, 1862. Early in the morning of April 6th, General Albert S. Johnston's Confederate Army burst through the unfortified Union near Shiloh meetinghouse and threatened to drive Grant's men back into the Tennessee River. Historians differ on almost every aspect of the battle, but at any rate on April 7th Union forces recaptured the initiative and drove the Confederates back in great disorder.      After many more decisions and battles Grant was ready for his ... • 118. Analysis Of The Story ' Shiloh ' By Bobbie Ann Mason Symbolism in Shiloh In the short story "Shiloh", written by Bobbie Ann Mason, symbolism is widely used. The story has several different messages behind the symbols used throughout the story. The log cabin, the Civil War battle of Shiloh, the dust ruffle and a flock of birds are all similes used to foreshadow and help readers further understand. Although the symbols have different messages, they all tie together to produce the conclusion of the whole story. First, let's discuss the biggest simile that sticks out the most throughout the story, the log cabin. Mason writes about a log cabin that Leroy soon becomes obsessed and fixated with making for Norma Jean. The log cabin represents Leroy and Norma Jean's marriage. For Leroy, the log cabin symbolizes the importance of a strong marriage, built on a solid foundation from the ground up by the man of the relationship. Although many times throughout the story, Norma Jean clearly tells him she isn't interested in living in a cabin and hates the idea of it. It seems as if anytime Leroy is at a loss for words, he falls back to the log cabin conversation. Him clinging on and refusing to give up the idea of building the cabin for Norma Jean represents how he also won't give up on his wife or marriage. The log cabin is connected to the next symbol of the story, Shiloh, the Civil War Battle site. Mabel, Norma Jean's mother, is constantly trying to talk her daughter and son–in–law to go visit the town from basically the second ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 122. Military Leadership : No Control Group Exists Military leadership is forever difficult to umpire as no control group exists. One may see the verdict of hindsight view passive strategy unfavorably, like General George McClellan who built the Union army in the early stages of the war but was a lethargic and fearful field commander who seemed incapable of gathering the courage to assertively take on Confederate General Robert E. Lee, an American soldier best known for commanding the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia; others are indicted on being too reckless. Shelby Foote, an American historian and novelist, describes the massacre on Gettysburg by Major General George Pickett, proclaiming, "And that was the mistake he made, the mistake of all mistakes....and there was scarcely a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In February of 1862, Ulysses S. Grant took control of all union forces following his impressive governance over the reinforced Confederates under Brigadier General Gideon J. Pillow at the battle of Fort Donelson (Grant 149). Ultimately, he developed a grand strategy to defeat the Confederacy and in the end, with much resistance, succeeded. Grant began to greatly take advantage of the Northern upper hand in resources, transforming the war into a bloody but efficient battle of attrition. He in this manner revived the Northern war exertion and saw it through to its finish, with General Robert Lee surrendering on April 9, 1865, at the McLean House in Appomattox, Virginia (329). The battle of Shiloh (April 6–7, 1862), the Civil War's first catastrophically bloody battle, serves as an illustration of Grant's military prowess. The implementation of sound tactics with the advantages provided to him explicitly in Shiloh and throughout the American Civil War, along with his sincere concern and belief in his troops, result in victory here and in the conflict altogether. Following defeats at Fort Henry and Donelson, Confederate Gen. Albert Sidney Johnston, commander of the western armies within the Western Department, withdrew to Corinth, Mississippi in order to start preparing for an offensive maneuver against Grant (150). • 126. A Blaze Of Glory : The Battle Of Shiloh Hello, and today I am doing a report on a historical fiction book, and I chose this book, A Blaze of Glory. First, I will be overviewing the setting. The book mainly takes place in Southwest Tennessee with some events taking place in Northeastern Mississippi. However, the main action happens in Shiloh, Tennessee, where the Battle of Shiloh takes place, the main event of the book. To be more specific, the Battle of Shiloh takes place at Pittsburg Landing, which is very close to Shiloh. (The Battle of Shiloh is also known as the battle of Pittsburg Landing). The events of the book take place from February 22, 1862, to April 28, 1862, during the Civil War. (The dates are in the book at the beginning of each chapter). However, the main battle of the book, the Battle of Shiloh, takes place on April 6–April 7. That is where and when my book, A Blaze of Glory, takes place. Personally, I would recommend my book, A Blaze of Glory, to people who like reading about history or want to learn more about the Civil War. However, if you do not like reading long and sometimes tedious books, this is not the book for you. There is not much action in the book, but small part of the book where there is action is excellent. Additionally, the majority of the book is very informative, descriptive, and actually makes you feel like you are taking part. However, it takes around 200 pages for the action to start, and the book can be lengthy at some points. That is why I would recommend my book, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 138. Essay on Shelby Foote's Shiloh Shelby Foote's Shiloh In the novel Shiloh, historian and Civil War expert Shelby Foote delivers a spare, unflinching account of the battle of Shiloh, which was fought over the course of two days in April 1862. By mirroring the troops' movements through the woods of Tennessee with the activity of each soldier's mind, Foote offers the reader a broad perspective of the battle and a detailed view of the issues behind it. The battle becomes tangible as Foote interweaves the observations of Union and Confederate officers, simple foot soldiers, brave men, and cowards and describes the roar of the muskets and the haze of the gun smoke. The author's vivid storytelling creates a rich chronicle of a pivotal battle in American history. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is a really small book (just over 200 pages) and while the images are graphic and the characters accessable, the author just doesn't have the space to spread out and let the reader develop a real emotional response to these characters and their actions. Nor is he able to provide any perspective on the battle and what it means – even for the individual characters he has presented. I think it helps to have read the section in his narrative history of the Civil War that deals with Shiloh. But this means that the novel doesn't really stand on its own. The reader must come equiped with prior knowledge or be left with questions that will require some research. Perhaps not bad, but I would have preferred a more comprehensive treatment – something more like Tom Wicker's Unto This Hour. That's just personal taste. Foote did what he intended and did it well. I can't help it if I just want more. Fans of Shelby Foote's massive three volume Narrative History of the Civil War, (and I am the work's biggest fan), will surely find something they like in Foote's earlier novel about the battle of Shiloh. I couldn't help thinking, however, that Foote's real calling is as historian and commentator, and his effort to write a novel here seems to be a bit off the mark. Perhaps unfairly, novels of the Civil War tend to get compared to Michael Shaara's brilliant Killer Angels, a comparison that does not bode ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Known originally as the Battle of Pittsburg Landing, The Battle of Shiloh was the bloodiest battle fought in North America up to that time. Pittsburg Landing was an area from where the Yankees planned to attack the Confederates who had moved from Fort Donelson to Corinth, Mississippi. The North was commanded by General Ulysses S. Grant and the South by General Albert Sydney Johnston. The Union army was taken by surprise the first day when the Confederate Army unexpectedly attacked, but after Union reinforcements arrived the fighting virtually ended in a tie. Before the States Rights war, I was a slave and plantation owner. I think they were searching for us, yet we won the engagement. Then we came across some Confederate outposts. We also won that engagement, as well. Then the general told me to go back and help the main lines.
