The Emerald Ash Tree
Some trees in the yard just don't look right. They grow branches in odd places that don't seem to fit
in. Their leaves are smaller than normal and never seem to be the right color. The bark on their
trunks is stained in odd colors and peeling in places. They seem to be constantly dropping pieces of
dead wood on the lawn. We hope for their good health, and sometimes are encouraged by periods of
growth, but they never seem to make it to their happy place, leaving us at a loss for what to do.
Declining trees very often fall victim to insects that feed on their woody tissue, making their
condition worse. They are referred to as boring insects, and they make tunnels through the bark of
trees while in their larval stage. When they reach the sapwood of the tree they feed on the nutrients
that the tree is transporting to and from its branches. This drain on the energy of the tree causes a
failure to thrive, and eventually death by starvation. If the tunneling is prolific, the structural

Emerald Ash Borer Essay
The Emerald Ash Borer is a phloem–feeding beetle that is native to Asia and has been increasing its
presence in the US. The beetle is invasive, harmful to native ash trees, and has the ability to spread
(Kovacs et al., 2010). The invasive beetles cause destruction to ash trees in a gradual process, that
usually lasts three years. The beetles initiate the attack along the upper trunk and bases of main
branches and then work their way down (Winners, 2002). The adult beetles lay eggs on the ash tree's
bark and when they hatch, the larvae bore into the bark and feed on the transportation tissues of the
tree (NCFS, 2016). This causes disruption of the movement of nutrients and water within the tree.
Since the bug resides and lays eggs within the tree's bark, they are hard to recognize until the ...

The trees do a lot of evapotranspiration, so if the borer destroyed them, the watershed levels would
increase. This increase would negatively affect plant diversity because invasive species and grasses
would start to become present. In urban areas, there is usually more diversity, so the absence of
black ash would not affect the habitat that significantly. Also, if a tree dies in an urban environment,
another one can be planted. On the other hand, in a forested wetland, if black ash trees start dying
they would be very hard to replace and replenish. Slesak et al., 2014 state that if evapotranspiration
is affected, a shift in the vegetation would occur and favor herbaceous vegetation rather than trees.
There are various methods used to manage the spread of EAB to black ash forested wetlands.
Mercader et al., 2011 bring up one method, which consists of removing ash trees to reduce available
host phloem resource. Basically, foresters cut down trees that can host EAB, attempting to eliminate
their presence. A different method, brought up by BenDor et al., 2006, consists of implementing

cooling down fast then suddenly I felt a cold breeze shiver down my spine and as I turned around i
see a tall skinny man behind me. He was sort of hunched over and had a mischievous smile on his

said, "oh no sir i can't take that, it must of costed you a fortune." he came closer making me fear for
my own life and he firmly said, "Take it..I insist" i just nodded my head i fear and watched him
leave. The necklace is very beautiful, but why would give it to a random stranger? I continued

Emerald Scholarship
Starting my journey at Eastern Michigan University I was fortunate enough to have received the
Emerald Scholarship. This scholarship has greatly helped in decreasing costs of attendance. I have
also been largely supported by my parents my first few years at this school. As I near my senior
year, the financial responsibility of school has now become my own. While I welcome this
responsibility, my need for financial aid is necessary as I am a full–time student and part–time
employee at Boneheads BBQ. I would like to be able to keep my position working part–time to
ensure that I am able to fully dedicate myself to my education. I have known from a young age I
wanted to become a teacher when I grew up. Throughout high school, the passion I have ... Show

I found this out when I was in middle school when my soccer coach started a weekend program for
children with disabilities. I volunteered every Saturday morning a developed a very special bond
with the children I played with. While the program was intended to help parents have a break during
their day to do necessary tasks, the program was the start of a very important journey for me. Just as
these children had a profound impact on my life, my goal is to do the same for them.
When I entered high school in Saline, I was a part of the Connecting Program. The program was
designed for students to learn about different disabilities, the politics of special education, and to
give us experience in the classroom working with students who had a range of disabilities. I took
this class so many times that I had to start taking it as an independent study so I could continue
learning and participating in classrooms with students. It felt like home to be working with children.
Teaching was very natural for me. I felt comfortable and confident working in all my classrooms. I
was fortunate to have the support from all supervising teachers and they provided me guidance and
knowledge as I continued to grow in the classroom. I couldn't wait to go to college so I could focus
on teaching every day and officially start my journey as a future

Analysis Of The Book ' The Wizard Of Oz '
The Wizard of OZomoness "There is no place like home," Which could not be more true for the
most of us, is a famous quote from The Wizard Of OZ, a movie about a girl who finds herself in a
world different from hers, wishing to return to her farm in Kansas. Along the way, she discovers
many things about herself that she never thought she was capable of. Although her time in the Land
of OZ was just a dream, it sends powerful messages. Not only that there is no place like home, but
that in our dreams we realize who we are. The outside world never sees who we truly are or what
makes us happy. We feel a need to conform to society and act how other people act, so that we don't
stand out. Why wouldn't people express themselves for who they truly are? Bird Clarkson, a man on
a mission, seems to ask a similar question. Clarkson, a faculty member in the Communication and
ARTS Department at Central Michigan University, entered a piece in the ArtPrize 2016 competition
in Grand Rapids (MI) named The Wizard of Ozomoness. It is an interpretive dance play of sorts that
is meant to get kids or people alike to express themselves and let them know that their dreams can
come true. The piece we chose was the backdrop of the Emerald City that is meant for this play and
we evaluated how its appearance and representation of a dream world further emphasized the
meaning of the piece. We proved this by interpreting its physical attributes, with interviews with
people observing the piece and with a

Emerald Coast Research Paper
The name Emerald Coast sounds like a place from a fairytale, but the truth is, it is far better than any
storyteller's fantasy land. Emerald Coast exists in reality as a place with stunning beachside cities,

Adventure Movies In Finding Nemo And The Wizard Of Oz
One person may prefer comedy movies, while another person prefers horror films, but what if a
movie's genre is ambiguous? Breaking down each movie into specific criteria helps determine which
genre suits it best. Movie genres benefit viewers because they give each movie a title that breaks
them down into general criteria that similar movies share, rather than describing specific details
from the movie. The movies Finding Nemo and The Wizard of Oz are both examples of adventure
movies. The first dynamic moment in the movie Finding Nemo is when Nemo swims over the drop
off and the scuba diver catches him and brings him to an aquarium. Nemo's location change creates
a conflict because he is no longer with his father in the ocean; he is on land. Throughout the course
of the movie Marlin and Dory travel across a vast majority of the ocean and land in hopes of finding
Marlin's son, Nemo. In The Wizard of Oz things change when a tornado strikes Dorothy's home in
Kansas. She wakes up in an unfamiliar place with unfamiliar people. Dorothy travels through the
Land of Oz to a known destination where the Wizard of Oz lives. Dorothy's goal is not to find
anything or anyone and then leave happily. Dorothy hopes that when she meets with the Wizard, he
will bring her back to her home in Kansas. An adventure movie is a movie that provides action and
excitement through the adaptation and utilization of the setting. There is always a journey in an
adventure movie, but there is usually an

Ecological niche modelling allows identification of areas vulnerable to establishment of the non–
indigenous species. The most promising possibility to predict future ranges of non–indigenous
species is to combine the rate of spread from past data and ecological niche modelling approaches.
This methodology would allow identification of vulnerable sites based on vector and pathway
studies, following which the model could be refined based on the match between the species'
ecological needs and the habitat's characteristics (Muirhead et al., 2006).
As well differences in detection probability observed for the different transects may reflect
differences in sampling intensity or a real difference in the probability of detection driven by habitat
differences such as the spatial or size class distribution of ash trees. Understanding the uncertainty
associated with the available detection tools is an important in the development and evaluation of
management strategies for a target count of a species (Mercader, Siegert, & McCullough, 2012). A
methodology in assessing an ash tree is infected is the strong correlation of emerald ash borer

The Emerald City Of Oz Analysis
The Good, The Bad, and the Dirty In Frank L. Baum's The Emerald City of OZ, Baum returns once
more to the Land of Oz and its inhabitants. The Emerald City of Oz is one of the later books, and
Baum nods to this when he notes "I suppose you have read so much about the magnificent Emerald
City that there is little need for me to describe it here," yet he goes on to describe it (29). However,
in his description of the city and the land of Oz, Baum brings up a contradiction that crops up
throughout the book. The inhabitants of Oz are "Peaceful, kind–hearted, loving, [and] merry," with
"not a single one who was evil, or [...] selfish or violent" (31). However, as the book continues,
people of Oz show many of the qualities that aren't supposed to exist among them, and it is revealed
that the whole of the kingdom of Oz came from the very opposite of traits that its people are
supposed to represent and carry. One of the biggest blow to the assertion of what people of Oz are
supposed to be is the origin of the kingdom. The city itself is a key place to start, as it is described
akin to the New Jerusalem (29). It is a place "built all of beautiful marbles" in which "a profusion of
emeralds" and other jewels are set, though the outside of buildings and streets are all of emeralds
(29). This is reminiscent of the heavenly city, wherein many precious gems and stones encrust
buildings. The language is also similar, in that they both refence cleanliness and quality through the

Astrology : A Constant War Between Ancient And Modern...
There is a constant war between ancient and modern methodology. Some people see astrology as
merely a superstition, while others have given scientific reasons behind it. Astrology is spreading
throughout the modern era and has a wider acceptance now more than ever. We see celebrities,
business tycoons, and many everyday citizens wearing stones to either enhance luck or fend off
peril.
It is said in Hindu mythology that when the demon king Bali was killed, gems came out of his body
as a symbol of victory of gods over demons. Diamonds were found from his bones, pearls from his
teeth, ruby from his blood drops, emerald from his gall bladder, blue sapphires from his eyes, lapiz
lazuli from the juice of his heart, cat 's eye from his nails, coral from his flesh, and yellow sapphire
from his skin.
The story continues. From these gems, the sun took away the rubies, the moon picked up the pearls,
Mars took away the coral, Mercury grabbed the emeralds, Jupiter scooped up the yellow sapphire,
Venus took the diamonds, Saturn collected the sapphires, Rahu took away zircon, and Ketu lifted up
the lapis lazuli. The energy from the stones is said to enhance the power of the planets.
Each month is associated with a gemstone. Here 's a month–to–month guide so that you can find the

Many people think that to get rid of them we have to cut down the ash trees but that is not true.
Recently in Burnsville, this summer it injected 14 ash trees at City Hall with pesticide to protect
them against the emerald ash borer. Deborah McCullough, a professor of entomology and forestry at
Michigan State University. Based on her research, she says: "There is no reason for a landscape ash
tree to die from emerald ash borer anymore. The treatment is so effective and so much cheaper than
removal and replacement that I can't get a single elected official to weigh in on the side of removing
healthy trees because we don't have to, and that is never popular with the public." Private ash trees
that were not injected are dead, while treated ash trees on city property stand nearby in good health.
Michigan and Ohio State research shows that injecting Tree–age "provides at least two years of
almost 100 percent control" of larvae, McCullough said. Applying pesticides every two years costs
about $250 a tree, while removal and replacement is $700 to $1,200 a tree. The company says the
product is a safe, "organic" option. We should try that option instead of cutting down trees. This

Being transgender greatly involves identity, naïve realism, ethnocentrism, and relativism. This
relates to ethnocentrism because one who is not transgender or doesn't have a clear understanding
may feel as though it isn't necessary. I define ethnocentrism as the belief that one's own behavior
and beliefs are superior to others. In many cases, some people have even acted upon their sense of
ethnocentrism committing hate crimes, homicide, or even murder. This is a reflection of their belief
that they are superior. This also is a reflection of how societies enforce this concept of gender and
feel threated when someone breaks the boundary. As one of my classmates said, looking at gender
from a religious aspect, God is a sort of genderless being and when one is struggling with gender
identity or transgender, it may appear as though they are making a statement. One that is telling
everyone else that they are on the same level as God. Naïve realism relates to what the guest
speakers discussed because they explained that there are a lot of people who tend to kind of stop and
stare at them simply because they look different; they are foreign to them. To those who don't
understand being transgender, they may not understand how someone could such an identity crisis,
as the feeling cannot be perceived by one who has not endured it. I found this to especially relate to
identity because among age, language, and various other things, gender is one of the primary
characteristics used to define self. If someone is experiencing an identity crisis, to whatever extent,
that's related to gender it directly correlates with the concept of identity we've been learning about in
class. Understanding the concept of being transgender may require a sense of cultural relativism. I
define relativism as the attempt to understand another culture's way of life from their own
perspective. If someone is wanting to

Emerald Forest Movie Review
The movie Emerald Forest conveys the tribes of the Amazon rainforest by providing the audience
with an anthropological view of their cultures. The indigenous people had to face the harmful effects
of mechanized society along with the Bat People being forced to acculturate with modern society.
This essay will be discussing Emerald Forest from an anthropological perspective.
In the film, when the indigenous cultures were affected by the building of the dam, they were
negatively impacted. The Bat people were forced to integrate with modern society due to their land
being deprived of its resources. The other tribes were affected too by having their hunting grounds
limited due to their territory being slowly deforested. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For instance, machine guns and nuclear bombs are very complex weapons. However, long
blowpipes and arrows require great skills to create them, and many people in the tribes can create
the weapons. In addition, the communal area the Invisible People lived in called a shabono and their
way of life had as many cultural advantages as the single–family living situations in the U.S. The
communal living provides tribes with a sense of unity and closeness whereas the single–family
living situation gives Americans the privacy they desire. All in all, Emerald Forest conveyed the
hardships that the tribes were undergoing due to the building of the dam and deforestation. The Bat
People were forced to live beyond "the edge of the world". As a result, their culture was oppressed.
The fascinating scenes that the movies showed of the Invisible People demonstrated how different
the modern American's culture is from an Indigenous person's culture. Although many people would
see the Invisible People as "primitive" people they have a lavish culture, intricate hunting
technology, and their own set of

The Emerald Forest Essays
All About "The Emerald Forest" movie "The Emerald Forest" is a movie produced by John
Boorman in 1985 and based on a true story in the Brazilian Rainforest. The film is a about Tommy, a
young boy, quickly and silently taken away by a tribe in the Amazon called, The Invisible People.
His dad then, spends 10 years searching for him and eventually succeeds after running into a war
party with another tribe called, The Fierce People –enemies of the invisible people– who pursue
him. They finally meet by chance, but the boy refuses to go back to his original family and
civilization and explains that he belongs to the forest now. The father couldn't understand the choice

They care about each other and can't live separately. Why? Because they believe in working together
to face the rude life of the Amazon Forest. At this point, we can say that their lifestyle is a bit similar
to ours but we really ignore the huge value of the forest as they do. The technology in general, is
known as an application of science or knowledge, in order to perform a specific function and
achieve a goal. The invisibles use their knowledge by making for example, knives, arrows ... but the
Westerns use it for big investment such as building a dam. Actually, our Tommy has been kidnapped
while watching his father directing the construction of a huge dam. When the invisible people see
the young boy, they figure out he would be better off with them rather than with The Termite People.
The name given to the white men, greedy developers, who seem to devour and destroy all the trees
as the termite insect. As a conclusion of the meaning of technology, the westerns enjoy using the
technology because it helps them to develop and have better life. But, the invisibles disagree with it
and can do miracles to stay safe from termite people. You can see that in the end of the movie when
Tommy prays for frogs believing that when frogs sing it rains. And rains will make a flood that
could tear down the almost complete dam. It's one of the art of fusion with spirits revealed in the
culture of the invisibles, such as merging with spirit of an eagle, to know

Essay On Hotel Del Coronado
Hotel del Coronado, San Diego, CA.
If you had the chance to visit San Diego, California you might consider staying at the Hotel del
Coronado. This popular beachfront hotel was once featured in the movie "Some Like It Hot"
starring Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon and Marilyn Monroe. It is possible that this hotel inspired writer
L. Frank Baum to come up with Emerald City in "The Wizard of Oz". The hotel isn't green but it
slightly resembles Emerald City. The hotel was built in the Victorian age in 1888 and is considered
to be a luxury beachside resort hotel on Coronado Island just a ten–minute drive from downtown
San Diego. Oh, yes there is one more interesting thing about this hotel; it comes with a resident
ghost.

Frank Baum lived in the U.S. in the Midwest, but spent his winters in southern California. He often

The Hotel del Coronado has been given the nickname of "Emerald City".
At the hotel you can see four spectacular crown–shaped chandeliers in the spectacular Crown Room
that were designed by Baum. When he was staying at the hotel the author's home away from home

An Experience In My Life
Have you ever had a that one experience that open your eyes, an experience unlike any of your other
experiences, an experience that you will never forget till you die ? Well it happened to me, and it
changed my life forever. I'm just a normal boy from Washington, pretty average I would say, there's
nothing important about me, nothing special. I don't really have friends so if I do die early I won't be
missed that much. I'm a senior and I'm supposed to sign up for colleges like everybody else, but not
me, because I really don't know what to do with my life. I was walking home from school it was just
a five minute walk. But it still tires me out because of all the books I have in my backpack. I finally
reached our street, it's just the usual nothing new, Ms. Gomez walking her dog, The Jacksons still as
noisy as ever that even though they're inside their house you can still hear them playing their music
loudly, and then there is our house. While opening the door, I almost step on something, it was a
pocket watch. Now why would a pocket watch be here? I also had no clue. I entered a different
place, which is clearly not my house, I was outside of a city. I was speechless, for I have never seen
anything like this in my entire life. There were green buildings as tall as the heavens that it could
actually reach the palace on top of Mount Olympus, A great wall that is the city entrance, embedded

you can see the Garibaldi fish. Once at the top of the mountain the views are breathtaking. When
you look forward you can see the beautiful aqua and turquoise waters, with bright orange Garibaldi

all the way to a rock out in the ocean. Before kayaking the leader will teach you how to steer the
kayak using the paddles. Just in case you do fall in you will be provided with a life jacket. When
your kayaking you will be able to see the Garibaldi fish and the kelp forest. When you're close
enough to shore you can stand on your kayak and the possibility of you falling in is high.

Like butterflies and hummingbirds that acquire their colour when light hits their bodies, opals gain
their 'play of colour' when a light ray encounters small obstacles or slits. When the light wave bends
as it passes around the edge or through the small openings, the ray breaks apart and scatters the
wave into visible rainbow hues. This phenomenon is known as diffraction. To understand how this
happens, you need to learn the structure of opals. The Structure of Opals Opals consist of silica and
water. When silica from the soil mixes with water, a silicate–rich solution is formed. This solution
enters a cavity or is trapped in layers under the earth, forming different types of opals. Over time,
the silicate–rich solution settles and the water evaporates, forming layer upon layer of silica spheres.
The layers of precipitated silica spheres turn into a jelly–like water mass, producing a diffraction
grating when the spheres are even in sizes and well–ordered. This creates a 'play of colour' from
within the stone when it is moved and the light hits the spheres in different angles. The Size of the

Political Figures In The Wizard Of Oz
Political Figures in the Land of Oz
Many people hold the opinion that they want political issues to stay separated from their leisure
entertainment, but it is impossible to create even the simplest of entertainment without taking on
some form of politics. In the 1939 musical film, The Wizard of Oz, witches and wizards are likened
to various politicians of the 'real world.' At this historical moment, Americans were watching World
War II unfold from the sidelines, seeing horrific dictators and many nations' leaders on their screens.
The Wizard of Oz mimics this through magical figures. They are powerful figures who manipulate

politics. Almira Gulch, who is mirrored in the land of Oz by the Wicked Witch, is a middle aged

to the Wicked Witch's ownership of the western half of Oz. However, despite Almira's apparent
power within the town, she comes across as weak and lacking when compared to Auntie Em or
Dorothy. Sure, her words may be threatening, but all the problems she presents–hatred towards
Dorothy, taking Toto away–seem to be solved as easily as they came about. Ultimately, Almira

Emerald Ash Borer
ENV 1010, Cobb Research Project July 30, 2013 The emerald ash borer, Agrilus planipennis, is a
beetle that was first discovered in 2002 in the US near the Detroit area and southeastern portions of
Michigan. This beetle is believed to have originated in Asia. The theory is that they arrived in the
states in packing material made of wood on cargo ships traveling on the St. Lawrence River, which
then leads into the Great Lakes. Since 2002, this beetle has made its way into parts of Canada and
now in at least eighteen states in the US (Emerald, n.d.). They are causing major destruction of Ash

Providing information to the public is extremely important. The more society is aware about the
Emerald Ash Borer, the more proactive detection agencies can become. One way these agencies are
informing people about this species is by collecting a lot of research and data to present. Many
websites offer publications based on the information collected to make homeowners more aware.
One website in particular, www.emeraldashborer.info ,offers files on topics such as tree
identification, safe insecticides to use, if infested, or any ash tree disposal to name a few.
Insecticides have been used to try to control the emerald ash borer. However, there are guidelines for
the use of these chemicals. There is a per acre use limit which means that all ash trees in the same
area can be treated more than once in a year with the same chemical. Before treating an area one
should pro–rate the acre use limit to match the size of the treatment area in order to control the
concentration of the chemicals being used. Insecticides used against the borer may be soil applied,
trunk injected and cover sprays. The soil applied treatment has been tested and has proved to be very
inconsistent. Therefore, environmental activists concerned about the use of insecticides moved
towards using a trunk injected treatment, but this has too been proven inconsistent in their trials.
Cover sprays, however, seem to be providing mediocre results. While this treatment

Analysis Of The Book ' Emerald City ' Essay
Some stories can impact a culture so universally, that there is no longer a way to say a phrase
without immediately making a connection. The automatic finish to "yellow brick" is "road" and
there can never be a book that has a "City of Emeralds" because we would all think it was a
reference to L. Frank Baum's "Emerald City." This pseudo–magical city, and its represen¬tation in
any given version of The Wizard of Oz, provides a very specific insight into the cultural views of the
time period it was created during and the people who formed that specific creative vision. For
Baum, the Emerald City was a representation of how little we can trust the government in spite of its
good intentions; Fleming's 1939 film emphasizes the benefits of home by displaying more faith in
the government; and Lumet's 1978 film plummets into a general disenfranchisement with the
ubiquitous establishment.
The original Emerald City of Baum's Wonderful Wizard of Oz was marketed not only as the home
of OZ the Great and Terrible, but also as a utopia for the citizens of Oz to live within and prosper.
However, this façade crumbles at the end of the book when Dorothy and her friends discover that
the green of the Emerald City is "no more [green] than any other city" (Baum 153) and the entire
city is a hoax of green eye glasses. While many see Baum's Emerald City's fallible nature as a
commentary on the use of dollar bills based from a gold standard, it can also be interpreted as
commentary on the ideas of

Cashdan claims that The Wizard of Oz tends to "focus on shortcomings in the self as opposed
excesses (218)." The themes in each fairy tale focus on different subjects. For instance, the theme in
Snow White is vanity, and how looks won 't get you anywhere. In other traditional fairy tales like
Cinderella, they teach that "intelligence, hard work and courage count for little unless one has
acquaintances in high places (Cashdan, 9)." The Wizard of Oz focuses on more inner conflicts than
other stories such as Snow White and Cinderella. The story is about Dorothy 's journey to make
herself a happier person and find a happier life. "Helping her companions fulfil their destinies helps
her fulfil her own (218)." Cashdan also explains how intelligence can outweigh physical attributes.
This is comforting for both children and adults alike because, overall, no one wants to be juded on
outer appearance, even if they are indeed good–looking. Intelligence is more important in the long
run. In Wicked, Glinda is obsessed with her prettiness and seems to outweigh Elphaba 's popularity,

Although a fictionalized Hollywood movie, John Boorman's film, "The Emerald Forest," adopts as a

The Emerald Ash Tree

  • 1. The Emerald Ash Tree Some trees in the yard just don't look right. They grow branches in odd places that don't seem to fit in. Their leaves are smaller than normal and never seem to be the right color. The bark on their trunks is stained in odd colors and peeling in places. They seem to be constantly dropping pieces of dead wood on the lawn. We hope for their good health, and sometimes are encouraged by periods of growth, but they never seem to make it to their happy place, leaving us at a loss for what to do. Declining trees very often fall victim to insects that feed on their woody tissue, making their condition worse. They are referred to as boring insects, and they make tunnels through the bark of trees while in their larval stage. When they reach the sapwood of the tree they feed on the nutrients that the tree is transporting to and from its branches. This drain on the energy of the tree causes a failure to thrive, and eventually death by starvation. If the tunneling is prolific, the structural integrity of ... • 3. Emerald Ash Borer Essay The Emerald Ash Borer is a phloem–feeding beetle that is native to Asia and has been increasing its presence in the US. The beetle is invasive, harmful to native ash trees, and has the ability to spread (Kovacs et al., 2010). The invasive beetles cause destruction to ash trees in a gradual process, that usually lasts three years. The beetles initiate the attack along the upper trunk and bases of main branches and then work their way down (Winners, 2002). The adult beetles lay eggs on the ash tree's bark and when they hatch, the larvae bore into the bark and feed on the transportation tissues of the tree (NCFS, 2016). This causes disruption of the movement of nutrients and water within the tree. Since the bug resides and lays eggs within the tree's bark, they are hard to recognize until the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The trees do a lot of evapotranspiration, so if the borer destroyed them, the watershed levels would increase. This increase would negatively affect plant diversity because invasive species and grasses would start to become present. In urban areas, there is usually more diversity, so the absence of black ash would not affect the habitat that significantly. Also, if a tree dies in an urban environment, another one can be planted. On the other hand, in a forested wetland, if black ash trees start dying they would be very hard to replace and replenish. Slesak et al., 2014 state that if evapotranspiration is affected, a shift in the vegetation would occur and favor herbaceous vegetation rather than trees. There are various methods used to manage the spread of EAB to black ash forested wetlands. Mercader et al., 2011 bring up one method, which consists of removing ash trees to reduce available host phloem resource. Basically, foresters cut down trees that can host EAB, attempting to eliminate their presence. A different method, brought up by BenDor et al., 2006, consists of implementing firewood ... It was so hot outside i had to stop and take a break. I sat on a bench faraway from other people so i can cool down. Where i sat was a lot of shade so I started cooling down fast then suddenly I felt a cold breeze shiver down my spine and as I turned around i see a tall skinny man behind me. He was sort of hunched over and had a mischievous smile on his face he stepped closer to me and said, "My you have very beautiful eyes and nice tan skin! I'm sure the color green would look so beautiful on you." I gave him an awkward smile and nervously said 'T–Thank you.." "Here take this necklace I'm sure you'll take very good care of it." he said with a devious smile on his face. The necklace reminded me on an ancient Egyptian actifact, it had gold with emerald jewels on it and in the middle has a big golden beetle with small rubies on it. Amazed I said, "oh no sir i can't take that, it must of costed you a fortune." he came closer making me fear for my own life and he firmly said, "Take it..I insist" i just nodded my head i fear and watched him leave. The necklace is very beautiful, but why would give it to a random stranger? I continued shopping trying to forget what just happened. • 7. Emerald Scholarship Starting my journey at Eastern Michigan University I was fortunate enough to have received the Emerald Scholarship. This scholarship has greatly helped in decreasing costs of attendance. I have also been largely supported by my parents my first few years at this school. As I near my senior year, the financial responsibility of school has now become my own. While I welcome this responsibility, my need for financial aid is necessary as I am a full–time student and part–time employee at Boneheads BBQ. I would like to be able to keep my position working part–time to ensure that I am able to fully dedicate myself to my education. I found this out when I was in middle school when my soccer coach started a weekend program for children with disabilities. I volunteered every Saturday morning a developed a very special bond with the children I played with. While the program was intended to help parents have a break during their day to do necessary tasks, the program was the start of a very important journey for me. Just as these children had a profound impact on my life, my goal is to do the same for them. When I entered high school in Saline, I was a part of the Connecting Program. The program was designed for students to learn about different disabilities, the politics of special education, and to give us experience in the classroom working with students who had a range of disabilities. I took this class so many times that I had to start taking it as an independent study so I could continue learning and participating in classrooms with students. It felt like home to be working with children. Teaching was very natural for me. I felt comfortable and confident working in all my classrooms. I was fortunate to have the support from all supervising teachers and they provided me guidance and knowledge as I continued to grow in the classroom. • 11. Analysis Of The Book ' The Wizard Of Oz ' The Wizard of OZomoness "There is no place like home," Which could not be more true for the most of us, is a famous quote from The Wizard Of OZ, a movie about a girl who finds herself in a world different from hers, wishing to return to her farm in Kansas. Along the way, she discovers many things about herself that she never thought she was capable of. Although her time in the Land of OZ was just a dream, it sends powerful messages. Not only that there is no place like home, but that in our dreams we realize who we are. The outside world never sees who we truly are or what makes us happy. We feel a need to conform to society and act how other people act, so that we don't stand out. Why wouldn't people express themselves for who they truly are? Bird Clarkson, a man on a mission, seems to ask a similar question. Clarkson, a faculty member in the Communication and ARTS Department at Central Michigan University, entered a piece in the ArtPrize 2016 competition in Grand Rapids (MI) named The Wizard of Ozomoness. It is an interpretive dance play of sorts that is meant to get kids or people alike to express themselves and let them know that their dreams can come true. The piece we chose was the backdrop of the Emerald City that is meant for this play and we evaluated how its appearance and representation of a dream world further emphasized the meaning of the piece. We proved this by interpreting its physical attributes, with interviews with people observing the piece and with a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Emerald Coast Research Paper The name Emerald Coast sounds like a place from a fairytale, but the truth is, it is far better than any storyteller's fantasy land. • 15. Adventure Movies In Finding Nemo And The Wizard Of Oz One person may prefer comedy movies, while another person prefers horror films, but what if a movie's genre is ambiguous? Breaking down each movie into specific criteria helps determine which genre suits it best. Movie genres benefit viewers because they give each movie a title that breaks them down into general criteria that similar movies share, rather than describing specific details from the movie. The movies Finding Nemo and The Wizard of Oz are both examples of adventure movies. The first dynamic moment in the movie Finding Nemo is when Nemo swims over the drop off and the scuba diver catches him and brings him to an aquarium. Nemo's location change creates a conflict because he is no longer with his father in the ocean; he is on land. Throughout the course of the movie Marlin and Dory travel across a vast majority of the ocean and land in hopes of finding Marlin's son, Nemo. In The Wizard of Oz things change when a tornado strikes Dorothy's home in Kansas. She wakes up in an unfamiliar place with unfamiliar people. Dorothy travels through the Land of Oz to a known destination where the Wizard of Oz lives. Dorothy's goal is not to find anything or anyone and then leave happily. Dorothy hopes that when she meets with the Wizard, he will bring her back to her home in Kansas. Ecological niche modelling allows identification of areas vulnerable to establishment of the non– indigenous species. The most promising possibility to predict future ranges of non–indigenous species is to combine the rate of spread from past data and ecological niche modelling approaches. This methodology would allow identification of vulnerable sites based on vector and pathway studies, following which the model could be refined based on the match between the species' ecological needs and the habitat's characteristics (Muirhead et al., 2006). As well differences in detection probability observed for the different transects may reflect differences in sampling intensity or a real difference in the probability of detection driven by habitat differences such as the spatial or size class distribution of ash trees. Understanding the uncertainty associated with the available detection tools is an important in the development and evaluation of management strategies for a target count of a species (Mercader, Siegert, & McCullough, 2012). A methodology in assessing an ash tree is infected is the strong correlation of emerald ash borer emergence holes to canopy thinning on the same trees suggests that surveys for new infestations of emerald ash borer could begin with visual surveys of canopy thinning. • 27. The Emerald City Of Oz Analysis The Good, The Bad, and the Dirty In Frank L. Baum's The Emerald City of OZ, Baum returns once more to the Land of Oz and its inhabitants. The Emerald City of Oz is one of the later books, and Baum nods to this when he notes "I suppose you have read so much about the magnificent Emerald City that there is little need for me to describe it here," yet he goes on to describe it (29). However, in his description of the city and the land of Oz, Baum brings up a contradiction that crops up throughout the book. The inhabitants of Oz are "Peaceful, kind–hearted, loving, [and] merry," with "not a single one who was evil, or [...] selfish or violent" (31). However, as the book continues, people of Oz show many of the qualities that aren't supposed to exist among them, and it is revealed that the whole of the kingdom of Oz came from the very opposite of traits that its people are supposed to represent and carry. One of the biggest blow to the assertion of what people of Oz are supposed to be is the origin of the kingdom. The city itself is a key place to start, as it is described akin to the New Jerusalem (29). Some people see astrology as merely a superstition, while others have given scientific reasons behind it. Astrology is spreading throughout the modern era and has a wider acceptance now more than ever. We see celebrities, business tycoons, and many everyday citizens wearing stones to either enhance luck or fend off peril. It is said in Hindu mythology that when the demon king Bali was killed, gems came out of his body as a symbol of victory of gods over demons. Diamonds were found from his bones, pearls from his teeth, ruby from his blood drops, emerald from his gall bladder, blue sapphires from his eyes, lapiz lazuli from the juice of his heart, cat 's eye from his nails, coral from his flesh, and yellow sapphire from his skin. The story continues. From these gems, the sun took away the rubies, the moon picked up the pearls, Mars took away the coral, Mercury grabbed the emeralds, Jupiter scooped up the yellow sapphire, Venus took the diamonds, Saturn collected the sapphires, Rahu took away zircon, and Ketu lifted up the lapis lazuli. The energy from the stones is said to enhance the power of the planets. Each month is associated with a gemstone. Here 's a month–to–month guide so that you can find the perfect stone to suit your soul. A non–native species is a species that originally was not in a certain location but was brought there and causes a lot of damage. An invasive species also is a great danger to the environment and can cause damage to humans, plants, and animals. In Illinois and the Great Lakes area there are more than 180 invasive and non–native species. That means a lot of damage is made into our environment. One particular invasive species is Agrilus planipennis, more commonly known as emerald ash borer. What is the life cycle of the emerald ash borer? Many people think that to get rid of them we have to cut down the ash trees but that is not true. Recently in Burnsville, this summer it injected 14 ash trees at City Hall with pesticide to protect them against the emerald ash borer. Deborah McCullough, a professor of entomology and forestry at Michigan State University. Based on her research, she says: "There is no reason for a landscape ash tree to die from emerald ash borer anymore. The treatment is so effective and so much cheaper than removal and replacement that I can't get a single elected official to weigh in on the side of removing healthy trees because we don't have to, and that is never popular with the public." Private ash trees that were not injected are dead, while treated ash trees on city property stand nearby in good health. Michigan and Ohio State research shows that injecting Tree–age "provides at least two years of almost 100 percent control" of larvae, McCullough said. Applying pesticides every two years costs about $250 a tree, while removal and replacement is $700 to $1,200 a tree. The company says the product is a safe, "organic" option. The Emerald City Trans Social Club is an all–inclusive social and educational group for transgender people living in the Seattle area. I learned that transgender is an umbrella term for anyone who is a cross dresser and that for many people being trans is like a part time job. For one of the guests, Alyssa, being "Alyssa" is her second life. Meaning that she may dress as Alyssa for social events and outings. On the other hand, Debra is a woman full time. To further explain how transgender is an umbrella term, Alyssa created a transgender spectrum, which showed each aspect of being transgender. For example, one end of the spectrum was sexual while ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Being transgender greatly involves identity, naïve realism, ethnocentrism, and relativism. This relates to ethnocentrism because one who is not transgender or doesn't have a clear understanding may feel as though it isn't necessary. I define ethnocentrism as the belief that one's own behavior and beliefs are superior to others. In many cases, some people have even acted upon their sense of ethnocentrism committing hate crimes, homicide, or even murder. This is a reflection of their belief that they are superior. This also is a reflection of how societies enforce this concept of gender and feel threated when someone breaks the boundary. As one of my classmates said, looking at gender from a religious aspect, God is a sort of genderless being and when one is struggling with gender identity or transgender, it may appear as though they are making a statement. One that is telling everyone else that they are on the same level as God. Naïve realism relates to what the guest speakers discussed because they explained that there are a lot of people who tend to kind of stop and stare at them simply because they look different; they are foreign to them. To those who don't understand being transgender, they may not understand how someone could such an identity crisis, as the feeling cannot be perceived by one who has not endured it. I found this to especially relate to identity because among age, language, and various other things, gender is one of the primary characteristics used to define self. If someone is experiencing an identity crisis, to whatever extent, that's related to gender it directly correlates with the concept of identity we've been learning about in class. Understanding the concept of being transgender may require a sense of cultural relativism. I define relativism as the attempt to understand another culture's way of life from their own perspective. The indigenous people had to face the harmful effects of mechanized society along with the Bat People being forced to acculturate with modern society. This essay will be discussing Emerald Forest from an anthropological perspective. In the film, when the indigenous cultures were affected by the building of the dam, they were negatively impacted. The Bat people were forced to integrate with modern society due to their land being deprived of its resources. All in all, Emerald Forest conveyed the hardships that the tribes were undergoing due to the building of the dam and deforestation. The Bat People were forced to live beyond "the edge of the world". As a result, their culture was oppressed. Like butterflies and hummingbirds that acquire their colour when light hits their bodies, opals gain their 'play of colour' when a light ray encounters small obstacles or slits. When the light wave bends as it passes around the edge or through the small openings, the ray breaks apart and scatters the wave into visible rainbow hues. This phenomenon is known as diffraction. To understand how this happens, you need to learn the structure of opals. The Structure of Opals Opals consist of silica and water. When silica from the soil mixes with water, a silicate–rich solution is formed. This solution enters a cavity or is trapped in layers under the earth, forming different types of opals. Over time, the silicate–rich solution settles and the water evaporates, forming layer upon layer of silica spheres. The layers of precipitated silica spheres turn into a jelly–like water mass, producing a diffraction grating when the spheres are even in sizes and well–ordered. This creates a 'play of colour' from within the stone when it is moved and the light hits the spheres in different angles. The Size of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 67. Analysis Of The Book ' Emerald City ' Essay Some stories can impact a culture so universally, that there is no longer a way to say a phrase without immediately making a connection. The automatic finish to "yellow brick" is "road" and there can never be a book that has a "City of Emeralds" because we would all think it was a reference to L. Frank Baum's "Emerald City." This pseudo–magical city, and its represen¬tation in any given version of The Wizard of Oz, provides a very specific insight into the cultural views of the time period it was created during and the people who formed that specific creative vision. For Baum, the Emerald City was a representation of how little we can trust the government in spite of its good intentions; Fleming's 1939 film emphasizes the benefits of home by displaying more faith in the government; and Lumet's 1978 film plummets into a general disenfranchisement with the ubiquitous establishment. The original Emerald City of Baum's Wonderful Wizard of Oz was marketed not only as the home of OZ the Great and Terrible, but also as a utopia for the citizens of Oz to live within and prosper. However, this façade crumbles at the end of the book when Dorothy and her friends discover that the green of the Emerald City is "no more [green] than any other city" (Baum 153) and the entire city is a hoax of green eye glasses. • 69. Emerald Mile Subcultures "Life is like the river, sometimes it sweeps you gently along and sometimes the rapids come out of nowhere."–Emma Smith. Life is constantly changing and college is a significant "life–changer". " [T]he story of the Emerald Mile sort of touches on these two different subcultures: We are people who define ourselves in terms of technology and science and our ability to control nature. We are also people who are shaped and honed by an extended 250–year–long encounter with raw wilderness. Those are two different aspects of who we are, and we have not reconciled those two things. And stories help illuminate that disconnect in a way that is provocative and revealing" (Leonard, 2014). The book, The Emerald Mile, aids to illuminate what life on the treacherous ... • 71. Oz as Utopia Taylor Wilton Dr. Ethna Lay The Wonderful Worlds of Utopia Americans crave Oz because of it 's utopian vision. On the surface, Oz appears to be a perfect utopia to Dorothy. When she first arrives, Oz is bright, colorful and full of magic and wonder while her home in Kansas is dull, lifeless and devoid of hope. In Kansas, it 's as if the citizens are stuck with no real plans or goals for the future. In Oz, traveling down the elaborate, intertwined yellow brick road offers Dorothy a great chance for adventure and hope and magic. This also goes for Elphaba from the Broadway show, Wicked. Bot of their desire is to go home. The end of the yellow brick road and the Wizard offers a chance for both of their prayers to be answered. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Cashdan claims that The Wizard of Oz tends to "focus on shortcomings in the self as opposed excesses (218)." The themes in each fairy tale focus on different subjects. For instance, the theme in Snow White is vanity, and how looks won 't get you anywhere. In other traditional fairy tales like Cinderella, they teach that "intelligence, hard work and courage count for little unless one has acquaintances in high places (Cashdan, 9)." The Wizard of Oz focuses on more inner conflicts than other stories such as Snow White and Cinderella. The story is about Dorothy 's journey to make herself a happier person and find a happier life. "Helping her companions fulfil their destinies helps her fulfil her own (218)." Cashdan also explains how intelligence can outweigh physical attributes. This is comforting for both children and adults alike because, overall, no one wants to be juded on outer appearance, even if they are indeed good–looking. Intelligence is more important in the long run. In Wicked, Glinda is obsessed with her prettiness and seems to outweigh Elphaba 's popularity, but Elphaba is the one who triumphs in the end when the teacher gives her special privelages with a wand because she realizes how smart and gifted she is, disregarding her looks completely. Also, in The Wizard of Oz, Scarecrow symbolizes how uncomfortable it is to feel unintelligent. "He knows his lot in life will be vastly improved if he can make sense of the world. And ... • 73. Culture In The Emerald Forest Although a fictionalized Hollywood movie, John Boorman's film, "The Emerald Forest," adopts as a dramatization principle of a mystical environmental anthropology. It gives insight to the destructive juxtaposition of indigenous cultures and the effects of a modern mechanized society on these cultures. The film poses questions as to how modern societies affect indigenous cultures and if they can coexist or if sacrifices are needed for one culture to supersede. The modern society detailed in "The Emerald Forest" experiences the effects of ethnocentrism, having a distinct set of cultural norms and customs. Therefore, viewing traditions and practices used by the 'Invisible People,' and the other indigenous cultures depicted in the film, as inferior, odd, or abnormal. Furthermore, the modern society illustrated in "The Emerald Forest," essentially makes false assumptions of the indigenous ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For a behavior to be considered cultural it must be shared extra genetically; that is, it must be taught. Furthermore, cultural behavior is a complication of behaviors exhibited by humans (and, some would argue, by other species as well, though to a much lesser degree) that is extrasomatic or extragenetic–in other words, learned. Therefore, an individual can in fact acculturate to a different way of life and is not constrained by the culture they may have been born into. For instance, the when Tommy is abducted by the 'Invisible People' and raised in a hunter, gatherer environment, as one of their own. I believe that culture is nurture based and this does not necessarily indicate that one culture's inability to adapt to another is an argument for culture being inbred. Humans do adapt, particularly young humans that haven't been imprinted over time with habit. Tommy's father implements how much more difficult assimilation is for an established adult, despite being equally welcomed into the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 77. The Emerald Mile The Emerald Mile by Kevin Fedarko was about a journey through the Grand Canyon, but at the same time, it was about so much more than that. Much like this book, Utah State University is about classes, learning, and education, but also so much more than that. At USU you are in control of your future. They give you the chance to pick classes, a major, teachers, where to live, who to hang out with, etc.. But even with all those decisions you can make you are still going to have things that you are put through where you'll have little or no control. Much like the crew in The Emerald Mile you'll learn about yourself through what you decide in the first place, but also how you react to unexpected obstacles. The most impressive thing you can do if ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The point of college isn't just to make it to graduation as fast as you can. That diploma isn't going to change you. The events and lessons learned leading up to that diploma are what are going to change you. College shapes you into the person you have always wanted to be, it allows you to make decisions for yourself and to be able to grow from each and every one of them. Even if you may not notice it, you are changing every single day, and before you know it you've become the person you've always wanted to be, just like when the Emerald Mile crew, "were unaware that the events of the next several hours would mark each of them in profound and disturbing ways and would, for a select handful, change their lives forever" (Fedarko 251). Getting a higher education will change your life forever. So expect to change a lot in the next four years, and be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
