Mary Oliver Monologue
One Monday night, Oliver sat up in bed reflecting over his first day of ballet class. Why is it so
funny to be a boy ballet dancer? Why did the girls make fun of me? Oliver remembered the mean
things the girls said to him. "Boys are bad at ballet" "Why don't you go play baseball or football like
all the other boys?" Poor Oliver thought everyone hated him. That was until he met Hazel.
Hazel was a sweet girl who befriended Oliver on his second day of ballet. She was nice and helped
Oliver learn his choreography. Oliver and Hazel became really good friends. They hung out together
almost every day after dance class. Hazel never judged Oliver even though he was the only boy.
One day at ballet class, Oliver was asked by his dance teacher to emulate a girl for his solo dance.
Oliver was hesitant knowing that the other girls would tease him. Hazel was quick to respond to
their teacher's request. "Of course he'll do it!" she exclaimed. "What will I need to do?" Oliver asked
shyly. His teacher explained to him what his choreography was and the techniques. ... Show more

Oliver endeavored very hard, but he just couldn't get the steps right. The girls watching him were
laughing as his dance teacher stood in the corner with a disappointed look on her face.
Oliver stopped dancing. A girl walked up to him and said, "That was awful, you should quit." This
definitely didn't make Oliver feel better. His face turned red and he ran away crying. He didn't come
back to dance for the next two classes and that started to worry Hazel.
Hazel called Oliver wondering why he hadn't been coming to classes. Oliver explained that he didn't
want to be embarrassed and do the dance so poorly again. As they talked Hazel spontaneously
shouted, "I'LL HELP YOU WITH THE STEPS!" Oliver thought this was a wonderful idea and they
started to put their plan into

Dancing At Lughnasa Essay
Dancing at Lughnasa is a glimpse into the private lives of the Mundy sisters and their journey in
1930s Ireland. The sisters not only struggle with their nephew born out of wedlock (and without
father), but also keeping the appearance and values of a family with strong catholic faith. With their
own personal struggles –such as a child born out of wedlock– the relationship between the girls
becomes tense and causes a riff in the family. The trials that the Mundy sisters experience are
common everywhere – even in a modern day America. In today's day and age, unmarried woman
having children is common, but not generally approved of – especially when the mother is young. It
is assumed that the younger the mother is, the least likely she will be able to support her child –
financially and emotionally. Chris, the single mother of a seven–year–old boy (Michael) in Dancing
at Lughnasa, is twenty–four during the play; this means she had Michael at seventeen. In 1930s, the

Kate, the eldest sister, being the enforcer of keeping catholic morals in the family. Chris having a
child out of wedlock is far from proper in the eyes of the Catholic Church; while Kate loved
Michael and was pleased to help raise him, she was not pleased about the shame it had brought upon
their family. Kate was a strong believer in appearances and was always trying to be the best catholic
she could be to fight the shame of her sister's child. During one of Michael's monologues, he
discusses how his Uncle Jack, a missionary to lepers, helps the sister's hurt pride – the local town
was grateful of Uncle Jack and his work to spread the catholic faith. The city paper often featured
stories about him and the sisters used this good reflection of their family to hold their heads high.
The view that the Mundy family was still capable of believing in the catholic faith helped reduce the
feeling of shame from Chris'

Stereotyping of Bend It Like Beckham and Billy Elliot
Media
In this essay I will discuss about the stereotyping of Bend it like Beckham and Billy Elliot and the
different cultures. In Bend it like Beckham the mum of the main character doesn't want her to play
football because she is a girl and it isn't honourable for the family. She won't let her play football
because of this but Jess plays football behind her back. In Billy Elliot, the boy starts to dance and
the dad is against boys dancing and says they should be out boxing or playing football. This film
was set during the miner strike.
In Billy Elliot, there was a lot of stereotyping, mainly towards Billy being a dancer. Billy has an ...

The director uses happy music when Billy dances in front of his dad to make it look like he is
fighting against the stereotyping. When Billy's brother has a go at the teacher when she says that
Billy missed a dance audition, this is stereotyping because the brother has a go at the teacher and
says that he would be embarrassed to have a brother that dances and that he doesn't want a gay for a
brother. This is stereotyping against dancers and gays, because not all dancers are gay, just because
they like dancing and there isn't anything wrong with being gay just as long as u don't try and get
other people to join you. During this part of the film, the director uses sad rock type music to show
anger from his brother. After this part, Billy starts dancing to release his anger, this type of music is
also rock too show that Billy is unhappy. You can also see he is unhappy buy him Trying to climb
the wall, which looks like he is trapped in something and trying to get out of it. Billy seems to
express himself in dancing during the film and release his feeling about things. Dancing seems to be
the only thing Billy has. We also see the stereotyping towards Gays when Billy hits a boy and told
him to p*ss off u queer B*stard. This shows that Billy has a violent side to him and is upset here. We
also know that Billy isn't somebody who stereotypes

Little Miss Sunshine Stereotypes
This film also shows the lifestyle of some of those individuals who are the opposite of the Hoovers:
those who do appear to come across their own American dream and don't let it go. For instance, the
persons attending the beauty pageant who appear in the second half of the film. Beauty pageants,
which have become part of American culture, "reflect commonly held values, beliefs, and attitudes
that Americans share about women" (Watson and Marin 2004, 2). They represent the "ideal" woman
based on a strict beauty canon in which girls get acculturated. Little Miss Sunshine offers a realistic
view of child beauty pageants, exposing their artificial atmosphere. The naturalistic approach to life
that most people follow is avoided by those parents and children who partake in these contests, as
shown in 1:17:00 when Olive enters the backstage dressing rooms and find young girls getting spray

She is automatically labeled as an outcast because she just does not adjust to the norms that this
specific and artificial American dream requires. As Watson and Marin assert, "although pageantry is
problematic enough for women who must mask any sense of self derived from race, class, feminism,
or sexual orientation, for children, who have not fully formed a sense of self, it is even more
problematic". Despite this, Olive decides to try to make his dream come true. Her performance
involves her ripping her clothes off while dancing to Rick James' "Superfreak" (1:30:35), which
immediately arises controversy in the crowd due to its adult tone. However in the end, the whole
family support Olive's American dream gathering and dancing on stage, thus ridiculing the whole
pageant and what it symbolizes. Evidently, Olive loses the contest, proving that in a society based
on stereotypes, some aspects of the American dream are impossible to

Rape Fantasies By Margaret Atbeck Summary
Sterilized Intrusion: Misinterpretation of the Human Feedback During the short story presented by
Mary Gaitskill and her famous work, "The Other Place" (2011), there in the text, is provided
displacement of what is a defection from normalization. The narrator presents himself as an apple
tree in that his son, Douglas, demonstrates a similar affection for the destruction of human
persistence to survive. In disturbance of collective headway, Margaret Atwood's "Rape Fantasies"
(1977), expresses a group of individuals whom take about a magazine as a conversational
masterpiece through discussion of tolerable rape. Beings residing within society who take at their
own preference to go to undesirable conditions to meet undesirable shadows of morally baseless
beings. In such aspects, these stories offer a defection from their family and friends through
enjoyment of viewing individual demise and request to be raped and violence enjoyment. Therefore,
it is in these shortcomings that resolve is compiled through carefully constructed analysis of the
situation for abandonment of morality; providing guidelines for conduct in municipal activities with
removal of self–endangerment at the basis of discussion.
The problem lies within the mist of miscommunication from other resources. The inaction of these
events whether it be wanted rape or entertaining harm with action are the foundation to a more
formidable conclusion. Recognition of these occurring events such as conversation with lead in

Low-Self-esteem: A Way of Life Taught over Centuries
How many times have you walked through the local mall and seen the present day version of beauty
in a woman? Did she wear makeup? Was she thin enough to see through her skin? Or was she a
more voluptuous body type? More than likely she was a thin woman who had makeup on and dyed
or highlighted hair. She holds a job and is equal in legal status to a man. In most countries today,
women are viewed as equal to a man both as a provider and as a citizen of the country in which they
reside. Unfortunately, that has not always been the case. Women in early recorded history were
viewed as nurturers/caregivers and entertainers, while being considered inferior in status to a man.
In Paleolithic times the earth became known as Mother Earth because it ... Show more content on

The symbolism shows that the powerful and fertile priestess holds power over the fertility of the
crops. Important here is the power that females are given in this culture that has yet to be overridden
by male gods as in the case of Ishtar when she was adopted as Isis in Egypt.
Women were also viewed as entertainers as evidenced by the Egyptian tomb painting on page 57.
They could be everything from a lute player to a dancing girl. Egypt wasn't the only country to view
their women as potential entertainment; India circa 2300–1750 BCE has cast bronze statues of the
dancing girls of their country. These girls are shown nude but with multiple pieces of jewelry, their
hair is impressively dressed, but most importantly here one can see that for the body type of the
region the dancing girls are shown in a fertile manner. The fertile manner is suggested by the
rounding of the hips and the perkiness of the small but firm breasts. A more exaggerated womanly
figure would not have fit in with the surrounding culture, but the suggestiveness of the body is still
encased in this dancing girl statue.
Dancing and singing were not the only jobs women in Egypt were allowed to hold which was
monumental for that era when most women were relegated to a housewife position, seeing to her
husband's needs. Notice though, that women do not hold positions of power and authority unless
they are supposedly descended from the gods. For instance the only women apparently to hold
positions

Dancing At Lughnasa Analysis
Brian Friel's play Dancing at Lughnasa uses the effect of absence and presence to create a heartfelt
and tense 'memory play' set in Ireland in the summer of 1936. Michael lives with his mother and
four aunts, along with his Uncle recently returned from Africa. Friel's choice to have an absence of a
strong family unit is important and it will be considered how this sets the tone for the play. Next,
this essay will go on to examine the way the characters unfulfilled desires add to the overall effect of
the play. Poverty is apparent in the Mundy household and through the presence of hardship Friel
represents the socioeconomic environment in Ireland. Continuing to consider the Ireland represented
in the play this essay will look at the way the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The key themes of the play are each affected by the dramatist's balance of what is explicitly
explored and what is not. The emotions of love and loss are not openly portrayed yet are present all
the same. Each sister has a romantic unfulfilled fantasy, yet is constrained by her position in society
and the financial situation of the Mundy household. The conflicts of society are also expressed by
Friel in the way paganism and Catholicism are both present yet neither holds force in the household.
In terms of society Friel also makes subtle nods to mass Irish emigration. The absence of many
things in the play offers a bleak output yet underneath there is an optimistic tone, that dancing
remains and "all its hopes might be found in those assuaging notes and those hushed rhythms"

The Most Important For Cognitive Development
The first 20 years in the life of a female are the most important for cognitive development. During
these critical years, the limbic system, which controls the emotional control of the brain, is growing
and they are likely to feel more emotional than normal. Females are most influenced during this
time due to the incomplete limbic system, hormones and the desire to discover themselves; a time
otherwise known as adolescence. These years become the building block to the person they will
become; it is important that they surround themselves with people that are a positive influence and
an environment that fosters growth. Unfortunately for many females, this is not the case.

Other girls lean toward starvation as their way to obtain the ideal body. Barbie actually supported
the starvation method in the 1965 release of the slumber party Barbie. Included in the set was a scale
set to 110 pounds and a book on how to lose weight with the simple advice to not eat written on the
back. Not only is it wrong to force weight loss on young girls, it is absurd to recommend starvation
as a way to accomplish it. Thankfully, Barbie has recently listened to the repetitive cry for change in
the body shape of Barbie and released a doll with a more realistic figure. Hopefully, this will usher
in a movement less focused on the external aspects of a person as opposed to their character and
accomplishments. Since the first beauty pageant in 1888, un uprising in the comparison and
judgement of women swept the world. The whole concept of beauty pageants is corrupt and
disgusting as they put the primary focus on the outer appearance. Some may argue that the
contestants are judged based on talent and other abilities too, but those portions of the contest do not
count near as much as the girls physical beauty. In pageants that do consider talents, such as
dancing, the dances are often very provocative and inappropriate for their age. Infact, there are even
shows s like "Toddlers in Tiaras" that show the insanity of the pageants. In one episode of the eye

Why Is Quinceanera Important
A Quinceanera is a celebration of a Hispanic girl turning fifteen years old. It recognizes her coming
to age. It is usually a religious event. There is food, music, and dancing at the party. Many americans
girl now have a sweet sixteen. This came from a Quinceanera and Americans borrowed it. Hispanic
girls in America also do sweet sixteens, but they are exactly the same as Quinceanera. They still are
mainly based around religion. They also still have food, music, and dancing. A Quinceanera has
many other names such as,Quince Anos, a quinces, a Quinceanero, or a Fiesta Rosa. A Quinceanera

Yoruba Girl Dancing Part II
Colonization Leads to Interlacing of Cultures Reading the second half of Yoruba Girl Dancing one
thing I enjoyed most was the description of the many different cultures that Remi was forced to live
amongst. These cultures included the European culture of the upper class Nigerian in Lagos, the
culture of being at the private school, the working class British culture, the lifestyle of Germans who
wanted well and the culture of the well off Nigerians in London. Remi was able to successfully
journey her way through each of these different worlds and it was awfully impressive how she did.
Although Remi made it through I was surprised at how some of the adults ... Show more content on

One of the major things Remi had to deal with was the criticizing of her fellow peers. When she first
got to school all of the little girls were fond of her. They were curious as to why a girl would come
all the way from Africa alone and be going to their school. They were almost embracing her through
their curiosity but that did not last very long. Anita was the cruelest of the children but much of this
can be traced back to what she has been taught by her aunt. Anita created a negative image of Remi
by telling people, "If you touch her the black will rub off on you and very soon you will be black all
over too." (Bedford, 86) This played a contributing factor in Remi's isolation from the rest of the
girls. Many of the children believed this was quite true. Remi had her moments when she even
thought it was true because of the treatment she was receiving from the girls. This issue was solved
when Remi's teacher told everyone in class her reason for having dark skin and that it would not
come off. Race was obviously a big deal to the Europeans; more so with the wealthy older
Europeans and not so much with the children. Anita had the luxury of listening to the teachings of
her aunt who made sure that Anita had the same view of Africans as she did. One reason I feel the
wealthy Europeans have a certain outlook on the Africans is because of their lifestyle. Rich
Europeans saw themselves as above everyone in their society. They were

Dancing At Lughnasa Essay
The Many Faces of Dance in Rural Ireland – Brian Friel's Dancing at Lughnasa Undoubtedly, dance
is deeply rooted in Irish culture. This connection is portrayed by the Irish dramatist Brian Friel in
Dancing at Lughnasa, where it has a crucial role. The play depicts the daily lives of five sisters from
the point of view of Michael, the son of one of them. In his dramatic narrative, he describes a
number of events in which dancing is present in some form. At first glance, the function of dance in
the story appears uncomplicated – it serves as a form of entertainment for the sisters – yet on close
analysis, it is noticeable that is only one of many. Since the ancient times, dancing was one of the
simplest ways of enjoyment available to humans, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the Bellybag, the place of broken dreams, where people struggle to make a living, dancing takes
away the pain of having no career prospects, being alone and not satisfied with life. This is
especially true for the sisters, as not even one of them has a successful life or even a husband. For
instance, Maggie – the most cheerful character in the play, who often makes jokes – while she is not
giving away her sadness directly, the reader can feel a certain sense of longing for youth. Dance
reminds her of the competitions she used to take part in when she was young. She misses being
admired and also, she is tired of living mundane life, without any joy or reward for the hard work.
Obviously, she sees dance as the means to escape her duties and woes and she is the one who
initiated dance in few scenes, for example at the beginning, when she managed to make all sisters
dance, even Kate, who was the most reluctant. She is not waiting to be asked for a dance and takes
the opportunity to asks Gerry to dance, too. Rose, the most naïve of the Mundy, thinks that the
invitation for the Lughnasa dance is a proof for being loved by Danny, one of the local men, who is
already married. She misinterprets her sisters' concern as jealously. Agnes, who has the closest
emotional connection with Rose, and is the one who worries about her the most, is downcast for the
most part, yet in dance she shows true happiness. As for Kate, who keeps all her feelings hidden
under her cold demeanour and who protests against dancing, it is the source of a conflict. On the one
hand, it is sometimes visible that she also secretly wants to dance, yet her experience, religion and
bitter character makes her think, it is

Personal Narrative: My Experience With The Girl Scouts Of...
As often as little children are, my parents thrusted me into an activity that I had no idea that I
wanted to take part in. Most of these activities rarely outlive the years of barbie dolls or legos, due
to a general lack of interest, or most of the time, an increase of dislike for the activity. For me, my
dancing abilities withered away, as my place with the Girl Scouts of America grew stronger. Of
course in the beginning they cater the activities towards the interests of little girls, but they still
provided the community feeling. One year a small group of ten year olds made jewelry with the
residents of assisted living. Admittedly, the jewelry crafted was made in the interest for the ten year
olds, but each of us can still see the smiles on the elderly women when we handed them our

just locally. In addition to the community service, Girl Scouts also did an excellent job of teaching
the younger generation environmentalism. For my troop, Troop 1865, we read a book on how to
treat the Earth better and then each girl chose a specific topic to present in a local school to the
students and any local citizens about how they could each treat the environment better in their own

Self-Doubt Analysis
The Philosophy of Self–Doubt that Obscures the Beauty of Life
I couldn't sleep at 4:00am, Saturday morning. I woke up early to see the gloomy morning on the day
of my robotics competition. The bland morning, grey and pessimistic, seemed like a sky of
splattered gold paint over a large canvas to me. Not even my parents were awake, but my roaming
had woken them up because I saw my mother peek her head into the bathroom door as my fingers
ran through the strand of my short hair. "Que haces? What are you doing at this time?" She inquired
in a scolding, fatigued tone; her eyes squinting due to the bathroom's flooding luminescence. "I

Marlene is Angie's real mother but gave her child up to Joyce in order to pursue a career in London.
Joyce accepts, believing she could not have children, but later on miscarries from the strain of
bringing up Angie. We also learn that she separated from her husband Frank three years ago, while
Marlene tells Angie about working in America, further highlighting the difference in the outcome of
their respective choices. It is difficult to picture an opportunity for change arising for someone who
is working four jobs to survive, with a child who will probably need taking care of for the rest of her
life. Joyce's poverty is further highlighted by the absence of a telephone at her home. Rose, in
Dancing at Lughnasa, is dependent on Agnes who is her carer and makes many sacrifices for her.
Agnes is devoted to Rose in a very maternal fashion. Like Joyce, Agnes sacrifices herself
completely and goes to London with Rose, resulting in her dying alone and miserable. In both plays
the relationships between carer and the less able appear to demonstrate that despite women being
treated as inferior to men, and having far fewer choices they are still expected to take on very
demanding roles. The Mundy family do not receive and support from the community and what little

Summary Of Dancing At Lughnasa
" Dancing at Lughnasa" is a play written by Brian Friel first published in 1990. In the play, Friel
tells the story of Ireland as a whole through the story of a family living in Ballybeg, Donegal. The
family consists of five sisters and their brother, as well as Michael. Michael is the son of one of the
sisters, Christina, but more importantly the narrator of the story. The play is set in the summer of
1936. The first change mentioned in the book is the return of Father Jack. Father Jack is the oldest
member of the Mundy family, a missionary priest, who has spent the last 25 years in Uganda.
During his time in Uganda, he has absorbed the African religion and culture. Jack's return affects
greatly the everyday life of the Mundy sisters as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, Kate refuses change. As mentioned before, she cannot accept Father Jack's new
beliefs. This disapproval for change might come from the fact that Kate is afraid of losing control:"
suddenly you realize that hair cracks are appearing everywhere; that control is slipping away". That
is why she rarely joins the girls in dancing. She is worried about their futures and even though she is
described as a cold person, she truly cares about her sisters, which we can see when Agnes and Rose
decide to leave, as Kate is described to be "inconsolable".
The change in Kate's character is minimal, even when everything around her is changing. As Kate is
laid off from her job as a teacher, the authority structures in the house begin to break down. The girls
start challenging the internal hierarchy of the house. For example, Rose becomes more confident
and starts standing up for herself. She goes to meet Danny Bradley without telling anyone, leaving
the sisters very

Critical Appreciation Of Izu No Odoriko
With his publication of "Izu no Odoriko" in 1926, Yasunari Kawabata gained recognition for his
work. In this story, Kawabata tells the story of a student who is traveling along the Izu peninsula.
During his travels, he meets a group of traveling performers and decides to travel amongst them.
During his time with the performers, he is able to experience a life different from his student life in
Tokyo. An image that Kawabata repeatedly presents is a drum. The student tries to listen for the
drum whenever he is alone. To the student, the sound of the beating drum signifies that his time with
the traveling performers has yet come to an end. With its high popularity, "Izu no Odoriko" was
translated twice by two different translators during different time periods. The first translation was
done by Edward Seidensticker in 1954. The second translation was done by J. Martin Holman in
1997. Though both Seidensticker and Holman translated the same story, there is still difference in
their translations. With the imagery of the drum, Holman and Seidensticker relay a difference in the
intensity of emotion; furthermore, with the analyzation from Tobias, it can be seen why each
translator conveys a difference in emotion. Throughout "Izu no Odoriko" Kawabata repeatedly
mentions the drum that the young dancer uses in her performances. To the student, the sound of the
drum reminds him of the performers. On a subconscious level, the drum reminds the student that his

The characters in "Rape Fantasies" would try to prevent it from happening but they come to an
understanding that they have no control of what's going on. In Fun Home at a younger age Allison
was not in control of her sexuality due to her father masking her sexuality. Allison would want to
wear a guy's type clothing and her hair a certain way that most girls wouldn't wear but her father
would not allow it to happen. Allison's father struggled with being free and open with his sexuality
due to his past. Allison's father controls Alisson actions of being a girl because he wanted to be able

there situations. Allison tries to understand her sexuality better. Leading to this curiosity, Allison
thinks that she wouldn't fit in because of her homosexuality which makes it harder to accept because
of her dad trying to deal with it. Society makes it feel as though being homosexual is a bad thing.

What Is The Theme Of The Dancing Girl
The story The Dancing Girl is a well written book written by Mori Ogai in the 1880s, which
portrays the facts and information of the time period at that time. This book was one of the first
Japanese fictional novels written outside of Japan. The story takes place in the late 1880s and the
translated version written by Richard Bowring was released in the 1890s. The story is about the
author Mori Ogai's own life experience as a medical student. Ogai remodeled the world literature as
he narrates the relationship of the protagonist the medical student Toyotaro Ota and the heroine
German dancing girl Elise. In this aspect, the intention of this essay is to acknowledge the story The

Summary Of Hushpuppy's Dance
The scene begins when the child walk down the steps and into the smoky room where the pretty
women are dancing with the men, or looking for their next customer. The ladies are impressed by
the little girls as they knelt down to their level to greet them. The children were hesitant to dance
with the ladies and gaze at them as if they have never seen such femininity before. As Hushpuppy
was on her own quest throughout the room, the girls each walk with a lady of their own. The song
that plays during the scene says "If this isn't love, it'll have to do." In other words, for the context of
this scene, it means "If this isn't my real mama, she'll do." Hushpuppy spots a lady in the distance
and violins of a new song begin to play. The lady finds ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The hanging of these string lights reflect off of the red decoration, making the giving the room a
pink hue. Also, a lot of objects reflect the lighting (including wall hangings and jewelry), making the
objects even more shiny. The lighting in the whore house is lowkey because although there are
several lights hung throughout the whorehouse, the lighting gives a sexual ambiance. It is when
Hushpuppy and her mother enter the kitchen that the lighting becomes highkey. Since the kitchen is
the place filled with magic afterall, it makes since for it to contain the most light. Director of
Photography, Ben Richardson, does a great job at creating turning the kitchen into a place of
wonder. When Hushpuppy first sees Mama, it is when she walks out of the bright lights of the
kitchen. The kitchen lights from this perspective looks similar to the bright white lights of heaven.
Light represents security and truth. Also, when Hushpuppy is invited into the kitchen to watch
Mama's magic trick, the light of the kitchen reflects off of her face before entering. The key light
source of this scene are the string lights that are hung throughout the common area of the
whorehouse. The fill light and background lighting are made by other colorful chandeliers hanging
from the ceiling. The effect of this lighting enhances the soft features of the women's faces, their
makeup, and white gowns. Richardson knew that this lowlighting would be suggestive and a great

The Importance Of The Quinceaera Celebration
The Quinceañera Celebration and The Importance of It The Quinceañera celebration also known as
Fiesta de Quince is the most important event every girl wants once they turn fifteen. Quinceañera
celebrations are formal and very expensive due to buying the decorations and most important the
girls dress. A traditional father and daughter dance is always important in a quinceañera event. In the
United States many celebrate sweet sixteen even though the quinceañera tradition has been adapted
and still celebrated today.
SYMBOLISM
The main purpose of the event is to thank God for all his blessings he has given the quinceañera and
also to present her in front of all the guest as an adult (Cantu). The event is to celebrate and honor
the quinceañera's maturity as her now being a women (palfrey). The Party is a way to tell everyone
how the quinceañera will now be ready to make her own decisions (cantu). Everything that will be
in the event highlights God, family, friends, music, and food (The Quinceañera Celebration). Before
the party begins the quinceañera gets pictures taken with her beautiful dress by a professional
photographer that her parents hired (Cordova). The dress that she wears symbolizes her wearing the
first formal adult dress (Cantu). The quinceañera also wears a tiara and it represents her being the
princess of the night (Cantu). There is a special service for the quinceañera by thanking God for the
opportunity he gave her by having this big celebration and how she has completed childhood (The
Quinceañera Celebration). The quinceañera makes a special entrance during the service
accompanied by her chambelanes (Palfrey). The chambelanes wear nice suits that match the color of
her dress and she has a main chambelan that dresses different from the others (Palfrey). The girl is
seated in front of the guest at church because she is the most important at that time (Palfrey). The
pastor gives the quinceañera a small lesson on what the celebration actually means and how she will
be acting from now on(Cantu). The quinceañera has to kneel down during the service on a pillow
that has her name on it and pray (The Quinceañera Tradition). A bible is given to her by her

Dancing Girl Essay
In 1635, millions of people were sealed within the island nation of Japan where they remained
undisturbed until 1854 when Commodore Perry forced opened Japan's doors. It was only a short
sixty years later that Japan would defeat one of the great powers in the Russo–Japanese War
promoting itself as a world power and a model for other eastern nations. Japan had arrived as a
modern country; however, this quick development ignored social issues in favor of policies and
laws. It would not be until the twentieth century that Japan would come face–to–face with the
societal ills that it had overlooked during the Meiji period. Through the situation of the protagonist

As industrialization developed in Japan, there was a mass influx of people into towns and away
from the countryside. The towns became hubs of Westernization and wealth while the countryside
deteriorated into poverty. The industrialization that took root in the Meiji period led to the
stratification between educated and uneducated and the rich and the poor. This wild division in
circumstances is touched upon by "Dancing Girl" in the comparison of Elise with her lack of
education and squalid living conditions with the Toyotarō's high achievement in education as well as
the wealth of the Count. Some of these disparities are even blatantly pointed out like when Toyotarō
thinks back to when Aizawa told him "she might be sincerely in love with me and our passions
deeply involved, but there was certainly no meeting of minds" (Ogai 19). Before this point, Elise's
lack of education bound them closer together through a relationship of student and teacher. Rather
than using differences as an opportunity for growth and understanding, Aizawa focuses on their
disparity in education to separate them. The comparisons of excess to poverty highlight the deep–
rooted inequalities not only in "Dancing Girl", but in Japanese society and the need for
transformation to greater

Rape Fantasies Analysis
In Margaret Atwood's Rape Fantasies, the narrator Estelle describes her "rape fantasies" in which is
never assaulted. Initiated by a conversation with her coworkers about their controversial daydreams,
Estelle recounts her own reoccurring visions, though hers differ from those discussed between the
women. Throughout the piece, Atwood utilizes stream of conscious writing to show her narrator's
jumbled thoughts as she describes her "fantasies." Atwood's short story depicts a narrator
inexperienced in courtship and meeting men, as Estelle's honest and seemingly endless stream of
thoughts highlight her critical view of women she knows well and explain daydreams in which she
meets and (hopes to) build relationships with unfamiliar men. As a whole, Atwood's use of longer
sentences and stream of consciousness emphasize the narrator's disorganized and honest opinions.
Within the first few pages, the narrator voices her inner, cynical thoughts about her female
colleagues. She describes Chrissy the receptionist as being "[v]arnished" and "like she's been
painted over with nail polish" (Atwood 1). When Greta, a coworker, makes a comment about
another's concern for being out late at night, Estelle reveals, "[Greta] worked in Detroit for three
years and she never lets you forget it, it's like she thinks she's a war hero or something, we should all
admire her just for the fact that she's still walking this earth" (Atwood 2). She continues criticizing

Analysis Of The Poem ' Battle Royal '
The primary method for judging the worth of a piece of literature is its organic unity or the complex
way all the elements of a test contribute to a story's meaning. The images, symbols, and metaphors
in Ellison's "Battle Royal" give this story a whole new meaning. In 1947, when this short story was
published, the black community was at an all–time low. The main aspects of this piece have
ambiguous meanings behind them. The grandfather's death scene, the naked dancer, the battle royal,
the narrator's speech, and the narrator's dream all have significant symbolism. The grandfather's
death had a major impact on the narrator's life. As the grandfather passed away he stated, "Son, after
I'm gone I want you to keep up the good fight... Live with your head in the lion's mouth... Let'em
swoller you till they vomit or bust wide open" (Ellison, 1495). These words seem to act as spiritual
guidance for the narrator. Throughout the story the readers see the narrator refer back to these
words. The grandfather dies with a legacy that haunts blacks regardless of social, political, and
economic progress. The social, political, and economic system is seen when the naked blonde's
erotic dance is described. Overall, this scene represents America's distorted value system. The
symbolism made by flag tattoo on the dancer is actually a depiction of the relentless pursuit of
money, sex, and power. The men, in the room where the dancing took place, were not considerate of
the dancer's

"When everybody else is ready for the ending, I'm just ready to begin," Frank Gehry once wrote.
"It's been the story of my life" (qtd. in Templer, 1999, pp.1) Laying the Foundation
Born on 28 February 1929 in Toronto, Canada, Frank O. Goldberg entered a household with a strong
Polish and Jewish heritage. Twenty years earlier, Thelma Caplanski left Poland with her parents, a
couple with deep religious morals. Once they settled in Toronto, the two decided to change their last

The Goldberg family relocated to Timmins, Ontario during Frank's adolescent years. Unfortunately,
during these times, Frank saw how mean kids can be as he was given the nickname "Fish". People
did not accept his religion, Judaism, and the nickname was supposed to put him down but Frank
would later use that as a basis for his some of his creations. During this time, he explored atheism
because of these difficulties (Hines, 1986).
Finding and Designing Love
After Frank's father grew sick, the Goldberg family moved to Los Angeles where some of the family
already resided. Ironically, they lived in an apartment that was close to where the Loyola Law
School would be built in later years, according to Frank's blueprints. At this time, the family was
struggling for money and Frank had to find a job. He worked as a delivery truck man who installed
breakfast nooks. It was through this job that Frank would meet Anita Snyder, a woman who he
married later in 1952. Two years later, with the permission of his family, Frank decided to change
their last name to Gehry. The couple had two daughters and the three followed Gehry to an army

Essay on Message Sent To Children About Gender Identity
When discussing the meaning of gender identity, each and every person has a different view and
perception. Most times, these views are instilled upon them throughout their childhood whether they
are fully aware of it or not. As a result, some children feel forced to conform to the stereotypical
gender roles and identities defined by society. For me, however, that was never a problem.
The many experiences I faced throughout my childhood played a significant and defining role in the
shaping of my gender identity. As a young child my favorite toys were dolls and stuffed animals,
and quite often my parents found me setting up tea parties or playing house. While my parents did
provide me with cars and other gender neutral toys, I was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Although most of the time it was never a major problem, as we got older we found that we had
increasingly less in common due to the kinds of toys we played with and our differing interests
overall. He was into trains and anything sports related, whereas I loved arts and crafts and playing
with dolls. While we were always able to find something to do, it was if we had to cross a barrier of
discomfort to get to that point. In a sense, it was almost like those other toys were foreign to us.
As a child, I was under the impression that as a girl you wore dresses, loved the colors pink and
purple, and played with dolls. I am not sure if that was because those are the thing I chose to do as a
child, or if it was a result of the things I was surrounded by and heard while growing up, although it
was probably a combination of both. I distinctly remember the day my mom asked me whether I
wanted to take ballet or soccer. I adamantly told her that I wanted to take ballet because soccer was
for boys. She told me that both boys and girls played soccer, however, that didn't change my mind. I
was a "girlie girl," and I don't believe anything anyone could have done would have changed that. In
third grade, there was a boy in my ballet class. While we were told by our ballet teacher that many
boys take dance classes, many of us girls found it strange at first. He continued dancing at our studio
for a few years, and I later

Rape Fantasies By Margaret Atwood Analysis
Utilizing Involvements: Manipulation of Human Deterioration During the short story presented by
Mary Gaitskill and her famous work, "The Other Place" (2011), there in the text, is provided
displacement of what is a defection from normalization. The narrator presents himself as the bud to
which spawned his son, Douglas, as Douglas demonstrates a similar affection for the destruction of
human persistence to survive. In disturbance of collective headway, Margaret Atwood's "Rape
Fantasies" (1977), expresses a group of individuals whom talk about a magazine and turns it into a
conversational masterpiece through discussion of tolerable rape. Beings residing within society who
take at their own preference to go to undesirable conditions to meet undesirable shadows of morally
baseless beings. In such aspects, these stories offer a defection from their family and friends through
enjoyment of viewing individual demise and through request to be deprived. Therefore, it is in these
shortcomings that resolve is compiled through carefully constructed analysis of the situation for
abandonment of morality; providing guidelines for conduct in municipal activities with removal of
self–endangerment at the basis of discussion.
The problem lies within the mist of miscommunication from other resources. The inaction of these
events, whether it be wanted rape or entertaining harm with action are the foundation to a more
formidable conclusion. Recognition of these occurring events such as a conversation with lead in
typical avenues of expression provides stagnation of potential solutions to a reoccurring or present
problem. Through the usage of intellectual discussion among other counterparts, there can be an
elimination of the habitual inactivity of assorted thinking. Moreover, ignorance in the debate of
reason primes individuals to go on their own volition to seek out these events such as the perfect
rape as impulse obscures the repercussions and allows for completion of such task in mind. Rogue
sources of media collude in a larger aspect, to fleeting expressions of enjoyment that initiate these
wandering minds to falsified reasoning. It is, in our part of society, not to restrict the inbound media

Artistic Voice Essay
Artistic Voice
Authors have a distinct identity that you recognize when you read their work of art. The qualities
and aspects of a text that give an author a distinct identity as an artist are known as their artistic
voice. Denise Levertov and Anne Sexton both use different themes in their poetry that separate them
from other poets. Denise Levertov writes about the unknown and the unsaid in life. Anne Sexton
distinguishes herself by writing about her family, loves, and her emotional tragedies. Sandra
Cisneros wrote a novel called The House on Mango Street that contained a different setup than most
novels. It was written in fragments and the language was straightforward. Cisneros focuses on the

Meaning those problems that occur in the marriage will not just disappear when you kiss and make
up. In the second stanza she is using communion to express how a spouse if looking for
communication with their partner and is being turned away "each by each." Levertov refers to
society as a leviathan in the third stanza. She also talks about how the couple is looking for joy in
their relationship, but they do not want it to be known that things are not working out with them. In
the last stanza Levertov uses to "the ark of" to explain the survival of marriage. Everyone feels that
marriage is a delightful experience; choosing to ignore the reality of struggles that relationships
must deal with. Levertov took the one–sided view that people hold of marriage and exemplified the
realistic problems that people tend to forget.
When Anne Sexton writes her poetry she writes to make the reader feel what she is writing. Sexton
tends to write about her own experiences and events in other women's lives. In Anne Sexton's
Unknown Girl in the Maternity Ward, she uses a language to express a mother's pain and anger after
she gave birth to her fatherless child:
And now that's that. There is nothing more that I can say or lose.

The Power Of A Father 's Hand
The Power of a Father's Hand
Eventually we will all grow older and take something away from our childhood that our parents
taught us. I can only hope they will be positive like those in "Tips from My Father" by Carol Ann
Davis, rather than possible negative experiences like the ones in "My Papa 's Waltz" by Theodore
Roethke. Although some feel like they do not gain or lose anything from their parent's impact on
them and do not believe that they are the ones who shape their character or actions the most. I truly
believe that you can look at ones parents and see not just the physical characteristics they received
but the personal qualities too. Both poems deal with a child and father, but they happen to be
completely different when it comes to the fathers actions. "Tips from My Father" is a about a
daughter and father who are out back star gazing, as the father tries to teach the girl about navigating
her way home by the stars and planets above. On the other hand is "My Papa's Waltz" which is about
a son and father who seem to be performing a playful waltz in the kitchen before bed, until you dig
deeper and realize that there may be underlying tension or abuse.
The poems also happen to be different in the sense of their layouts. "Tips from My Father" is
considered to be an Italian or Petrarchan sonnet due to the fact that there is an applied idea and not
much of a rhyme scheme. It also has responses within it even though they may not be verbal the girl

Memory And Imagination
Memory and imagination are central to Brian Friels play, Dancing at Lughnasa' and Emma
Donoghues 2010 novel, Room; However, as memory provides substance to imagination and vice

shuffling reality. This overlap between memory and imagination will be the main focus of this essay.
According to Pierre Nora, memory can be multiple, yet also specific, collective, plural and
individual; it only accommodates facts that suit it and nourishes the recollections that might be
particular or symbolic (Nora 9). "Memory is life, borne by living societies founded in its name. It

However, if the whole world were to realize that the power of these hate groups comes from the
creation of fear, maybe everyone would be a bit more like Malala's dad, and not have the fear to

all find the courage to fight for what we know is right. Malala is a prime example of courage

Misconceptions In 'Rape Fantasy' By Estelle
What is your rape fantasy?
"Rape fantasies" illustrates the misconceptions pop culture taught society and women about rape
through the reoccurring irony and vulnerability theme. Throughout the story, the narrator named
Estelle speaks in first person with her coworkers as they share their sexual fantasies. The excerpt
conversation begins with Chrissy when she asks, "What are your rape fantasies?" To put the word
rape and fantasy in the same sentence is erroneous because there is nothing fantasizing about being
forced against your will. The story proves that women are mentally unprepared for a life–threatening
situation. Estelle has a comical tone through out the excerpt, "you know? RAPE, TEN THINGS TO

forward to that day ever since I was a little girl. Every Hispanic girl dreams of the day she officially
becomes a woman in the eyes of the church. We prepare for this day since our first communion
when we are surrounded by family members and loved ones. Earning our quincenera is not an easy
task. We have classes that we must accomplish through our church before we are essentially
presented as a woman to our friends and family. At first I didn't know if I wanted one; I was
undecided. As the moment kept getting closer and closer, I still didn't know if I wanted to have one
or not. One of my cousins in Mexico was going to have one and so we went to hers on a vacation as
a family and when we got back, I told my mom I wanted to talk to her and she was like what's
wrong? I told her, "Well I know you said it was up to me and so I do want my 15." I already knew
that these are the steps I must take before my special day. I have to be baptized, which I was, so that

I couldn't wait for that. I literally wanted almost every dress in the store. I loved all of them. I
couldn't decide from all the styles, all the pretty colors and forms of the dresses. I was super happy;
my emotions were all over the place. I tried all the ones I liked and after thinking over and over
again about it, I finally chose one. I got a turquoise one that I loved as soon as I saw it. I looked at
my mom; I told her, "This one mom! I have to I want it I love it!!" My mom was looking at me like
I was crazy. The lady from the store was looking at me like I was crazy too but she still helped me
try it on and when I had it on and looked at myself, I knew I was taking this one. The lady started
showing me the rest of the stuff that came with the dress. My faced hurt from smiling a lot but I just
couldn't help it; I was just so excited and

The Importance Of Who Am I In My Life
"Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter
don't mind."– Dr. Seuss. Though the phrase "who am I?" is composed of three simple, elementary
words, the weight it holds is great. In life, growing up and finding yourself go hand in hand. When I
think of who I am today at 17, many flashbacks of moments come to mind; people, places and
experiences. All of which, have impacted not only my character but my personality as well.
As long as I can remember my mom has referred to me as a bundle of energy and the center of
attention... even though my parents weren't ready for child number two, I was a fabulous surprise.
Expressing that we are "close" would be an understatement, there is not a week I don't see my
relatives. Home in my family is not my house, but it is all of us being together. Due to the close knit
relationship within my family, privacy is not an option. Sitting down for supper is a combination of
Intervention, Modern Family, Dr. Phil, and Cops. Although this is not ideal for a girl my age, I'm
grateful for the knowledge, support and unconditional love given. The laughs, tears shed and
constructive criticism provided have all developed me into the young woman I am today. Family
plays a significant role in my life whether it be my immediate family or my church family. I have
grown up amongst the same group of girls since Kindergarten, been privileged to have the same
Sunday School teachers most of my life and

Mary Oliver Monologue

  • 1. Mary Oliver Monologue One Monday night, Oliver sat up in bed reflecting over his first day of ballet class. Why is it so funny to be a boy ballet dancer? Why did the girls make fun of me? Oliver remembered the mean things the girls said to him. "Boys are bad at ballet" "Why don't you go play baseball or football like all the other boys?" Poor Oliver thought everyone hated him. That was until he met Hazel. Hazel was a sweet girl who befriended Oliver on his second day of ballet. She was nice and helped Oliver learn his choreography. Oliver and Hazel became really good friends. They hung out together almost every day after dance class. Hazel never judged Oliver even though he was the only boy. One day at ballet class, Oliver was asked by his dance teacher to emulate a girl for his solo dance. Oliver was hesitant knowing that the other girls would tease him. Hazel was quick to respond to their teacher's request. "Of course he'll do it!" she exclaimed. "What will I need to do?" Oliver asked shyly. His teacher explained to him what his choreography was and the techniques. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Oliver endeavored very hard, but he just couldn't get the steps right. The girls watching him were laughing as his dance teacher stood in the corner with a disappointed look on her face. Oliver stopped dancing. A girl walked up to him and said, "That was awful, you should quit." This definitely didn't make Oliver feel better. His face turned red and he ran away crying. He didn't come back to dance for the next two classes and that started to worry Hazel. Hazel called Oliver wondering why he hadn't been coming to classes. Oliver explained that he didn't want to be embarrassed and do the dance so poorly again. As they talked Hazel spontaneously shouted, "I'LL HELP YOU WITH THE STEPS!" Oliver thought this was a wonderful idea and they started to put their plan into ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Dancing At Lughnasa Essay Dancing at Lughnasa is a glimpse into the private lives of the Mundy sisters and their journey in 1930s Ireland. The sisters not only struggle with their nephew born out of wedlock (and without father), but also keeping the appearance and values of a family with strong catholic faith. With their own personal struggles –such as a child born out of wedlock– the relationship between the girls becomes tense and causes a riff in the family. The trials that the Mundy sisters experience are common everywhere – even in a modern day America. In today's day and age, unmarried woman having children is common, but not generally approved of – especially when the mother is young. It is assumed that the younger the mother is, the least likely she will be able to support her child – financially and emotionally. Chris, the single mother of a seven–year–old boy (Michael) in Dancing at Lughnasa, is twenty–four during the play; this means she had Michael at seventeen. In 1930s, the chances that sex education was being ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Kate, the eldest sister, being the enforcer of keeping catholic morals in the family. Chris having a child out of wedlock is far from proper in the eyes of the Catholic Church; while Kate loved Michael and was pleased to help raise him, she was not pleased about the shame it had brought upon their family. Kate was a strong believer in appearances and was always trying to be the best catholic she could be to fight the shame of her sister's child. During one of Michael's monologues, he discusses how his Uncle Jack, a missionary to lepers, helps the sister's hurt pride – the local town was grateful of Uncle Jack and his work to spread the catholic faith. The city paper often featured stories about him and the sisters used this good reflection of their family to hold their heads high. The view that the Mundy family was still capable of believing in the catholic faith helped reduce the feeling of shame from Chris' ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Essay about Stereotyping of Bend It Like Beckham and Billy... Stereotyping of Bend It Like Beckham and Billy Elliot Media In this essay I will discuss about the stereotyping of Bend it like Beckham and Billy Elliot and the different cultures. In Bend it like Beckham the mum of the main character doesn't want her to play football because she is a girl and it isn't honourable for the family. She won't let her play football because of this but Jess plays football behind her back. In Billy Elliot, the boy starts to dance and the dad is against boys dancing and says they should be out boxing or playing football. This film was set during the miner strike. In Billy Elliot, there was a lot of stereotyping, mainly towards Billy being a dancer. Billy has an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The director uses happy music when Billy dances in front of his dad to make it look like he is fighting against the stereotyping. When Billy's brother has a go at the teacher when she says that Billy missed a dance audition, this is stereotyping because the brother has a go at the teacher and says that he would be embarrassed to have a brother that dances and that he doesn't want a gay for a brother. This is stereotyping against dancers and gays, because not all dancers are gay, just because they like dancing and there isn't anything wrong with being gay just as long as u don't try and get other people to join you. During this part of the film, the director uses sad rock type music to show anger from his brother. After this part, Billy starts dancing to release his anger, this type of music is also rock too show that Billy is unhappy. You can also see he is unhappy buy him Trying to climb the wall, which looks like he is trapped in something and trying to get out of it. Billy seems to express himself in dancing during the film and release his feeling about things. Dancing seems to be the only thing Billy has. Little Miss Sunshine Stereotypes This film also shows the lifestyle of some of those individuals who are the opposite of the Hoovers: those who do appear to come across their own American dream and don't let it go. For instance, the persons attending the beauty pageant who appear in the second half of the film. Beauty pageants, which have become part of American culture, "reflect commonly held values, beliefs, and attitudes that Americans share about women" (Watson and Marin 2004, 2). They represent the "ideal" woman based on a strict beauty canon in which girls get acculturated. Little Miss Sunshine offers a realistic view of child beauty pageants, exposing their artificial atmosphere. The naturalistic approach to life that most people follow is avoided by those parents and children who partake in these contests, as shown in 1:17:00 when Olive enters the backstage dressing rooms and find young girls getting spray tanned, wearing heavy makeup and ... As Watson and Marin assert, "although pageantry is problematic enough for women who must mask any sense of self derived from race, class, feminism, or sexual orientation, for children, who have not fully formed a sense of self, it is even more problematic". Despite this, Olive decides to try to make his dream come true. Her performance involves her ripping her clothes off while dancing to Rick James' "Superfreak" (1:30:35), which immediately arises controversy in the crowd due to its adult tone. However in the end, the whole family support Olive's American dream gathering and dancing on stage, thus ridiculing the whole pageant and what it symbolizes. Rape Fantasies By Margaret Atbeck Summary Sterilized Intrusion: Misinterpretation of the Human Feedback During the short story presented by Mary Gaitskill and her famous work, "The Other Place" (2011), there in the text, is provided displacement of what is a defection from normalization. The narrator presents himself as an apple tree in that his son, Douglas, demonstrates a similar affection for the destruction of human persistence to survive. In disturbance of collective headway, Margaret Atwood's "Rape Fantasies" (1977), expresses a group of individuals whom take about a magazine as a conversational masterpiece through discussion of tolerable rape. Beings residing within society who take at their own preference to go to undesirable conditions to meet undesirable shadows of morally baseless beings. In such aspects, these stories offer a defection from their family and friends through enjoyment of viewing individual demise and request to be raped and violence enjoyment. Therefore, it is in these shortcomings that resolve is compiled through carefully constructed analysis of the situation for abandonment of morality; providing guidelines for conduct in municipal activities with removal of self–endangerment at the basis of discussion. The problem lies within the mist of miscommunication from other resources. The inaction of these events whether it be wanted rape or entertaining harm with action are the foundation to a more formidable conclusion. • 11. Low-Self-esteem: A Way of Life Taught over Centuries How many times have you walked through the local mall and seen the present day version of beauty in a woman? Did she wear makeup? Was she thin enough to see through her skin? Or was she a more voluptuous body type? More than likely she was a thin woman who had makeup on and dyed or highlighted hair. She holds a job and is equal in legal status to a man. In most countries today, women are viewed as equal to a man both as a provider and as a citizen of the country in which they reside. Unfortunately, that has not always been the case. Women in early recorded history were viewed as nurturers/caregivers and entertainers, while being considered inferior in status to a man. The symbolism shows that the powerful and fertile priestess holds power over the fertility of the crops. Important here is the power that females are given in this culture that has yet to be overridden by male gods as in the case of Ishtar when she was adopted as Isis in Egypt. Women were also viewed as entertainers as evidenced by the Egyptian tomb painting on page 57. They could be everything from a lute player to a dancing girl. Egypt wasn't the only country to view their women as potential entertainment; India circa 2300–1750 BCE has cast bronze statues of the dancing girls of their country. These girls are shown nude but with multiple pieces of jewelry, their hair is impressively dressed, but most importantly here one can see that for the body type of the region the dancing girls are shown in a fertile manner. The fertile manner is suggested by the rounding of the hips and the perkiness of the small but firm breasts. A more exaggerated womanly figure would not have fit in with the surrounding culture, but the suggestiveness of the body is still encased in this dancing girl statue. Dancing and singing were not the only jobs women in Egypt were allowed to hold which was monumental for that era when most women were relegated to a housewife position, seeing to her husband's needs. Notice though, that women do not hold positions of power and authority unless they are supposedly descended from the gods. For instance the only women apparently to hold positions ... • 13. Dancing At Lughnasa Analysis Brian Friel's play Dancing at Lughnasa uses the effect of absence and presence to create a heartfelt and tense 'memory play' set in Ireland in the summer of 1936. Michael lives with his mother and four aunts, along with his Uncle recently returned from Africa. Friel's choice to have an absence of a strong family unit is important and it will be considered how this sets the tone for the play. Next, this essay will go on to examine the way the characters unfulfilled desires add to the overall effect of the play. Poverty is apparent in the Mundy household and through the presence of hardship Friel represents the socioeconomic environment in Ireland. The key themes of the play are each affected by the dramatist's balance of what is explicitly explored and what is not. The emotions of love and loss are not openly portrayed yet are present all the same. Each sister has a romantic unfulfilled fantasy, yet is constrained by her position in society and the financial situation of the Mundy household. The conflicts of society are also expressed by Friel in the way paganism and Catholicism are both present yet neither holds force in the household. In terms of society Friel also makes subtle nods to mass Irish emigration. The absence of many things in the play offers a bleak output yet underneath there is an optimistic tone, that dancing remains and "all its hopes might be found in those assuaging notes and those hushed rhythms" ... • 15. The Most Important For Cognitive Development The first 20 years in the life of a female are the most important for cognitive development. During these critical years, the limbic system, which controls the emotional control of the brain, is growing and they are likely to feel more emotional than normal. Females are most influenced during this time due to the incomplete limbic system, hormones and the desire to discover themselves; a time otherwise known as adolescence. Not only is it wrong to force weight loss on young girls, it is absurd to recommend starvation as a way to accomplish it. Thankfully, Barbie has recently listened to the repetitive cry for change in the body shape of Barbie and released a doll with a more realistic figure. Yoruba Girl Dancing Sparknotes Dominique Johnson Professor John Oriji History 430 Yoruba Girl Dancing Part II Colonization Leads to Interlacing of Cultures Reading the second half of Yoruba Girl Dancing one thing I enjoyed most was the description of the many different cultures that Remi was forced to live amongst. These cultures included the European culture of the upper class Nigerian in Lagos, the culture of being at the private school, the working class British culture, the lifestyle of Germans who wanted well and the culture of the well off Nigerians in London. Remi was able to successfully journey her way through each of these different worlds and it was awfully impressive how she did. Although Remi made it through I was surprised at how some of the adults ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One of the major things Remi had to deal with was the criticizing of her fellow peers. When she first got to school all of the little girls were fond of her. They were curious as to why a girl would come all the way from Africa alone and be going to their school. They were almost embracing her through their curiosity but that did not last very long. Anita was the cruelest of the children but much of this can be traced back to what she has been taught by her aunt. Anita created a negative image of Remi by telling people, "If you touch her the black will rub off on you and very soon you will be black all over too." (Bedford, 86) This played a contributing factor in Remi's isolation from the rest of the girls. Many of the children believed this was quite true. Remi had her moments when she even thought it was true because of the treatment she was receiving from the girls. This issue was solved when Remi's teacher told everyone in class her reason for having dark skin and that it would not come off. Race was obviously a big deal to the Europeans; more so with the wealthy older Europeans and not so much with the children. Anita had the luxury of listening to the teachings of her aunt who made sure that Anita had the same view of Africans as she did. One reason I feel the wealthy Europeans have a certain outlook on the Africans is because of their lifestyle. Rich Europeans saw themselves as above everyone in their society. They were ... • 23. Dancing At Lughnasa Essay The Many Faces of Dance in Rural Ireland – Brian Friel's Dancing at Lughnasa Undoubtedly, dance is deeply rooted in Irish culture. This connection is portrayed by the Irish dramatist Brian Friel in Dancing at Lughnasa, where it has a crucial role. The play depicts the daily lives of five sisters from the point of view of Michael, the son of one of them. In his dramatic narrative, he describes a number of events in which dancing is present in some form. At first glance, the function of dance in the story appears uncomplicated – it serves as a form of entertainment for the sisters – yet on close analysis, it is noticeable that is only one of many. Since the ancient times, dancing was one of the simplest ways of enjoyment available to humans, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the Bellybag, the place of broken dreams, where people struggle to make a living, dancing takes away the pain of having no career prospects, being alone and not satisfied with life. This is especially true for the sisters, as not even one of them has a successful life or even a husband. For instance, Maggie – the most cheerful character in the play, who often makes jokes – while she is not giving away her sadness directly, the reader can feel a certain sense of longing for youth. Dance reminds her of the competitions she used to take part in when she was young. She misses being admired and also, she is tired of living mundane life, without any joy or reward for the hard work. Obviously, she sees dance as the means to escape her duties and woes and she is the one who initiated dance in few scenes, for example at the beginning, when she managed to make all sisters dance, even Kate, who was the most reluctant. She is not waiting to be asked for a dance and takes the opportunity to asks Gerry to dance, too. Rose, the most naïve of the Mundy, thinks that the invitation for the Lughnasa dance is a proof for being loved by Danny, one of the local men, who is already married. She misinterprets her sisters' concern as jealously. Agnes, who has the closest emotional connection with Rose, and is the one who worries about her the most, is downcast for the most part, yet in dance she shows true happiness. As for Kate, who keeps all her feelings hidden under her cold demeanour and who protests against dancing, it is the source of a conflict. On the one hand, it is sometimes visible that she also secretly wants to dance, yet her experience, religion and bitter character makes her think, it is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Most of these activities rarely outlive the years of barbie dolls or legos, due to a general lack of interest, or most of the time, an increase of dislike for the activity. For me, my dancing abilities withered away, as my place with the Girl Scouts of America grew stronger. Of course in the beginning they cater the activities towards the interests of little girls, but they still provided the community feeling. One year a small group of ten year olds made jewelry with the residents of assisted living. I woke up early to see the gloomy morning on the day of my robotics competition. The bland morning, grey and pessimistic, seemed like a sky of splattered gold paint over a large canvas to me. Not even my parents were awake, but my roaming had woken them up because I saw my mother peek her head into the bathroom door as my fingers ran through the strand of my short hair. "Que haces? What are you doing at this time?" She inquired in a scolding, fatigued tone; her eyes squinting due to the bathroom's flooding luminescence. "I couldn't sleep," I replied simply as I slid rivers of brown locks to the right. My parents dropped me off at my middle school before 7:00am after starting their day not long after I had, and the sudden feeling of butterflies in my stomach made me realize that I would have to wait a while due to my punctuality. Joyce's poverty is further highlighted by the absence of a telephone at her home. Rose, in Dancing at Lughnasa, is dependent on Agnes who is her carer and makes many sacrifices for her. Agnes is devoted to Rose in a very maternal fashion. Like Joyce, Agnes sacrifices herself completely and goes to London with Rose, resulting in her dying alone and miserable. • 35. Critical Appreciation Of Izu No Odoriko With his publication of "Izu no Odoriko" in 1926, Yasunari Kawabata gained recognition for his work. In this story, Kawabata tells the story of a student who is traveling along the Izu peninsula. During his travels, he meets a group of traveling performers and decides to travel amongst them. During his time with the performers, he is able to experience a life different from his student life in Tokyo. An image that Kawabata repeatedly presents is a drum. The student tries to listen for the drum whenever he is alone. To the student, the sound of the beating drum signifies that his time with the traveling performers has yet come to an end. With its high popularity, "Izu no Odoriko" was translated twice by two different translators during different time periods. The first translation was done by Edward Seidensticker in 1954. The second translation was done by J. Martin Holman in 1997. Though both Seidensticker and Holman translated the same story, there is still difference in their translations. With the imagery of the drum, Holman and Seidensticker relay a difference in the intensity of emotion; furthermore, with the analyzation from Tobias, it can be seen why each translator conveys a difference in emotion. It was only a short sixty years later that Japan would defeat one of the great powers in the Russo–Japanese War promoting itself as a world power and a model for other eastern nations. Japan had arrived as a modern country; however, this quick development ignored social issues in favor of policies and laws. As industrialization developed in Japan, there was a mass influx of people into towns and away from the countryside. The towns became hubs of Westernization and wealth while the countryside deteriorated into poverty. The industrialization that took root in the Meiji period led to the stratification between educated and uneducated and the rich and the poor. This wild division in circumstances is touched upon by "Dancing Girl" in the comparison of Elise with her lack of education and squalid living conditions with the Toyotarō's high achievement in education as well as the wealth of the Count. Some of these disparities are even blatantly pointed out like when Toyotarō thinks back to when Aizawa told him "she might be sincerely in love with me and our passions deeply involved, but there was certainly no meeting of minds" (Ogai 19). Before this point, Elise's lack of education bound them closer together through a relationship of student and teacher. • 49. Rape Fantasies Analysis In Margaret Atwood's Rape Fantasies, the narrator Estelle describes her "rape fantasies" in which is never assaulted. Initiated by a conversation with her coworkers about their controversial daydreams, Estelle recounts her own reoccurring visions, though hers differ from those discussed between the women. Throughout the piece, Atwood utilizes stream of conscious writing to show her narrator's jumbled thoughts as she describes her "fantasies." Atwood's short story depicts a narrator inexperienced in courtship and meeting men, as Estelle's honest and seemingly endless stream of thoughts highlight her critical view of women she knows well and explain daydreams in which she meets and (hopes to) build relationships with unfamiliar men. As a whole, Atwood's use of longer sentences and stream of consciousness emphasize the narrator's disorganized and honest opinions. Within the first few pages, the narrator voices her inner, cynical thoughts about her female colleagues. She describes Chrissy the receptionist as being "[v]arnished" and "like she's been painted over with nail polish" (Atwood 1). When Greta, a coworker, makes a comment about another's concern for being out late at night, Estelle reveals, "[Greta] worked in Detroit for three years and she never lets you forget it, it's like she thinks she's a war hero or something, we should all admire her just for the fact that she's still walking this earth" (Atwood 2). • 51. Analysis Of The Poem ' Battle Royal ' The primary method for judging the worth of a piece of literature is its organic unity or the complex way all the elements of a test contribute to a story's meaning. The images, symbols, and metaphors in Ellison's "Battle Royal" give this story a whole new meaning. In 1947, when this short story was published, the black community was at an all–time low. The main aspects of this piece have ambiguous meanings behind them. The grandfather's death scene, the naked dancer, the battle royal, the narrator's speech, and the narrator's dream all have significant symbolism. The grandfather's death had a major impact on the narrator's life. As the grandfather passed away he stated, "Son, after I'm gone I want you to keep up the good fight... Live with your head in the lion's mouth... Let'em swoller you till they vomit or bust wide open" (Ellison, 1495). These words seem to act as spiritual guidance for the narrator. Throughout the story the readers see the narrator refer back to these words. The grandfather dies with a legacy that haunts blacks regardless of social, political, and economic progress. The social, political, and economic system is seen when the naked blonde's erotic dance is described. Overall, this scene represents America's distorted value system. "It's been the story of my life" (qtd. in Templer, 1999, pp.1) Laying the Foundation Born on 28 February 1929 in Toronto, Canada, Frank O. Goldberg entered a household with a strong Polish and Jewish heritage. Twenty years earlier, Thelma Caplanski left Poland with her parents, a couple with deep religious morals. Once they settled in Toronto, the two decided to change their last name to Caplan. The owner of a hardware store, her father was also the president of a synagogue. The Goldberg family relocated to Timmins, Ontario during Frank's adolescent years. Unfortunately, during these times, Frank saw how mean kids can be as he was given the nickname "Fish". People did not accept his religion, Judaism, and the nickname was supposed to put him down but Frank would later use that as a basis for his some of his creations. During this time, he explored atheism because of these difficulties (Hines, 1986). Finding and Designing Love After Frank's father grew sick, the Goldberg family moved to Los Angeles where some of the family already resided. Ironically, they lived in an apartment that was close to where the Loyola Law School would be built in later years, according to Frank's blueprints. At this time, the family was struggling for money and Frank had to find a job. He worked as a delivery truck man who installed breakfast nooks. It was through this job that Frank would meet Anita Snyder, a woman who he married later in 1952. Two years later, with the permission of his family, Frank decided to change their last name to Gehry. The couple had two daughters and the three followed Gehry to an army base in Georgia (Hines, 1986) and then to Paris (Hines, 1986; Templer, 1999). Eventually, got divorced in 1966. Frank's relationship problems are similar to those that Gardner refers to in his geniuses' lives (Hines, 1986). Yet, Frank got remarried ten years later to Berta Isabel ... • 57. Essay on Message Sent To Children About Gender Identity When discussing the meaning of gender identity, each and every person has a different view and perception. Most times, these views are instilled upon them throughout their childhood whether they are fully aware of it or not. As a result, some children feel forced to conform to the stereotypical gender roles and identities defined by society. For me, however, that was never a problem. The many experiences I faced throughout my childhood played a significant and defining role in the shaping of my gender identity. As a young child my favorite toys were dolls and stuffed animals, and quite often my parents found me setting up tea parties or playing house. While my parents did provide me with cars and other gender neutral toys, I was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although most of the time it was never a major problem, as we got older we found that we had increasingly less in common due to the kinds of toys we played with and our differing interests overall. He was into trains and anything sports related, whereas I loved arts and crafts and playing with dolls. While we were always able to find something to do, it was if we had to cross a barrier of discomfort to get to that point. In a sense, it was almost like those other toys were foreign to us. As a child, I was under the impression that as a girl you wore dresses, loved the colors pink and purple, and played with dolls. I am not sure if that was because those are the thing I chose to do as a child, or if it was a result of the things I was surrounded by and heard while growing up, although it was probably a combination of both. I distinctly remember the day my mom asked me whether I wanted to take ballet or soccer. I adamantly told her that I wanted to take ballet because soccer was for boys. She told me that both boys and girls played soccer, however, that didn't change my mind. I was a "girlie girl," and I don't believe anything anyone could have done would have changed that. In third grade, there was a boy in my ballet class. While we were told by our ballet teacher that many boys take dance classes, many of us girls found it strange at first. He continued dancing at our studio for a few years, and I later ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Rape Fantasies By Margaret Atwood Analysis Utilizing Involvements: Manipulation of Human Deterioration During the short story presented by Mary Gaitskill and her famous work, "The Other Place" (2011), there in the text, is provided displacement of what is a defection from normalization. The narrator presents himself as the bud to which spawned his son, Douglas, as Douglas demonstrates a similar affection for the destruction of human persistence to survive. In disturbance of collective headway, Margaret Atwood's "Rape Fantasies" (1977), expresses a group of individuals whom talk about a magazine and turns it into a conversational masterpiece through discussion of tolerable rape. Beings residing within society who take at their own preference to go to undesirable conditions to meet undesirable shadows of morally baseless beings. In such aspects, these stories offer a defection from their family and friends through enjoyment of viewing individual demise and through request to be deprived. The inaction of these events, whether it be wanted rape or entertaining harm with action are the foundation to a more formidable conclusion. Recognition of these occurring events such as a conversation with lead in typical avenues of expression provides stagnation of potential solutions to a reoccurring or present problem. Through the usage of intellectual discussion among other counterparts, there can be an elimination of the habitual inactivity of assorted thinking. Moreover, ignorance in the debate of reason primes individuals to go on their own volition to seek out these events such as the perfect rape as impulse obscures the repercussions and allows for completion of such task in mind. Rogue sources of media collude in a larger aspect, to fleeting expressions of enjoyment that initiate these wandering minds to falsified reasoning. The qualities and aspects of a text that give an author a distinct identity as an artist are known as their artistic voice. Denise Levertov and Anne Sexton both use different themes in their poetry that separate them from other poets. Denise Levertov writes about the unknown and the unsaid in life. Anne Sexton distinguishes herself by writing about her family, loves, and her emotional tragedies. Sandra Cisneros wrote a novel called The House on Mango Street that contained a different setup than most novels. It was written in fragments and the language was straightforward. She also talks about how the couple is looking for joy in their relationship, but they do not want it to be known that things are not working out with them. In the last stanza Levertov uses to "the ark of" to explain the survival of marriage. Everyone feels that marriage is a delightful experience; choosing to ignore the reality of struggles that relationships must deal with. Levertov took the one–sided view that people hold of marriage and exemplified the realistic problems that people tend to forget. When Anne Sexton writes her poetry she writes to make the reader feel what she is writing. Sexton tends to write about her own experiences and events in other women's lives. In Anne Sexton's Unknown Girl in the Maternity Ward, she uses a language to express a mother's pain and anger after she gave birth to her fatherless child: And now that's that. I can only hope they will be positive like those in "Tips from My Father" by Carol Ann Davis, rather than possible negative experiences like the ones in "My Papa 's Waltz" by Theodore Roethke. Although some feel like they do not gain or lose anything from their parent's impact on them and do not believe that they are the ones who shape their character or actions the most. I truly believe that you can look at ones parents and see not just the physical characteristics they received but the personal qualities too. Both poems deal with a child and father, but they happen to be completely different when it comes to the fathers actions. "Tips from My Father" is a about a daughter and father who are out back star gazing, as the father tries to teach the girl about navigating her way home by the stars and planets above. On the other hand is "My Papa's Waltz" which is about a son and father who seem to be performing a playful waltz in the kitchen before bed, until you dig deeper and realize that there may be underlying tension or abuse. The poems also happen to be different in the sense of their layouts. "Tips from My Father" is considered to be an Italian or Petrarchan sonnet due to the fact that there is an applied idea and not much of a rhyme scheme. Memory And Imagination Memory and imagination are central to Brian Friels play, Dancing at Lughnasa' and Emma Donoghues 2010 novel, Room; However, as memory provides substance to imagination and vice versa there can often be a blurring of lines between memory and imagination, shuffling events and shuffling reality. This overlap between memory and imagination will be the main focus of this essay. According to Pierre Nora, memory can be multiple, yet also specific, collective, plural and individual; it only accommodates facts that suit it and nourishes the recollections that might be particular or symbolic (Nora 9). Room is the story of five–year–old, Jack and his Ma, who live in an eleven–by–eleven shed, named 'Room'. Unaware of the truths of life, Jack tells the story of living and escaping room from entirely from his own perspective. This story centralises John Milton's idea that the mind is its own self and can make a haven out of a hell (John Milton's a Paradise Lost: A sourcebook 92). In a truly grim situation, we enter the world Ma has created through Jacks own eyes. As a child, Jack knows so much less than an adult, allowing him to guess and imagine so much (The Irish Times 2010). Knowing nothing of the outside world beyond fantasies of the television screen, with the help of Ma's imagination, Jack presents the small space of Room as a world full of love, inanimate friends and fun. In the first half of the novel, readers are invited into Jacks world inside Room, through his innocent eyes, everything from "counting one hundred cereal and waterfall milk" to giving "Plant a cup of water" and eating with "Meltedy Spoon" creates a world full of imagination, love and excitement (Donoghue 6–8).; ... • 67. All Dreams Can Come True If We Have Courage As Walt Disney once said "All dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them." Courage is something that everyone is born with, but only some are courageous enough to find it and put it to use. Merriam Webster 's defines courage as "Mental or moral strength to venture, persevere, and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty." Courage can overcome any obstacle, proving that if we have courage any dream truly can come true. As readers we must understand that there are going to be times in life when we must use courage. By reading about others, and learning how to find the courage within, the reader is able to learn that courage truly is self–identifiable. There may be people along the way to help one find courage. However, if the whole world were to realize that the power of these hate groups comes from the creation of fear, maybe everyone would be a bit more like Malala's dad, and not have the fear to speak up for what is right. The author is trying to show us that no matter our circumstances we can all find the courage to fight for what we know is right. Malala is a prime example of courage because her life was put on the line. However, she walked the tightrope over the hate of the Taliban. She reached the tallest building and was able to achieve the greatest of accomplishments. Including being the youngest person ever nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. Malala was able to accomplish many extraordinary things thanks to her courage. The next example of a quiet girl with a loud mind is Maya Angelou. Maya was born in Arkansas and raised with her grandma. For her whole life she never knew if she had parents, so she created the perspective that she had been abandoned and unwanted. Though a negative outlook, a realistic one for a child who had never received anything from the so–called "parents" that brought her into this cold, lonely world. • 69. Misconceptions In 'Rape Fantasy' By Estelle What is your rape fantasy? "Rape fantasies" illustrates the misconceptions pop culture taught society and women about rape through the reoccurring irony and vulnerability theme. Throughout the story, the narrator named Estelle speaks in first person with her coworkers as they share their sexual fantasies. The excerpt conversation begins with Chrissy when she asks, "What are your rape fantasies?" To put the word rape and fantasy in the same sentence is erroneous because there is nothing fantasizing about being forced against your will. The story proves that women are mentally unprepared for a life–threatening situation. Estelle has a comical tone through out the excerpt, "you know? RAPE, TEN THINGS TO DO ABOUT IT, like it was ten new hairdos or something. I mean, what's so new about it?" The narration explains the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the beginning, she sounded insensitive towards the idea of rape and her absurd fantasies surrounding it but this quote proved her invulnerability and ironic theme in the story because she realized that she is no longer in control of the situation and the man has power over her because they could still go ahead with the rape. Another ironic fantasy is when she ends up falling in love with the man that shares leukemia with her, "it turns out that he has leukemia himself, and he only has a few months to live, that's why he's going around raping people, he's very bitter because he's so young and his life is being taken from him before he's really lived it." They most likely had some people dancing at certain times to keep up the act. Everyone in the town either believed it or was in on the lie. Some people may believe that the dancers were part of some kind of cult, however if that was the case some people would have stopped dancing. A few people assume that they must have been threatened to kill the dancers if they were to stop dancing; but with so many people dancing there must have been at least one that would have escaped and maybe have spilled the beans. Though the phrase "who am I?" is composed of three simple, elementary words, the weight it holds is great. In life, growing up and finding yourself go hand in hand. When I think of who I am today at 17, many flashbacks of moments come to mind; people, places and experiences. All of which, have impacted not only my character but my personality as well.
