Factors That Increase My Dairy Intake
Looking at the above increase list, I decided to increase my portion of vegetables to at least 1.5 cup by including more variety of veggies to my
morning breakfast smoothies and as a side of salad or steamed veggies at every meal. Vegetables are excellent sources of an array of vitamins
especially brightly colored veggies and dark green veggies. By including more veggies in my diet, I am essentially helping myself "up" my intake of
vitamins as well, since I am especially low in vitamin A, vitamin B1, vitamin B2, vitamin D, vitamin E and folate, by increasing consumption of
veggies from different subgroups like brightly colored veggies ( e.g. sweet potatoes, carrots and red peppers) , dark leafy greens (e.g. kale, collard
and spinach) and cruciferous vegetables (e.g. broccoli, brussels sprouts and cauliflower), which are packed with vitamins like vitamin A, vitamin B1,
vitamin B2, vitamin B6, vitamin C, vitamin E and folate. Next on my list, is to increase my dairy intake by including low–fat yogurt and fortified soy
milk, for example, 1 cup of Silk soy milk provides not only vitamin D, but also vitamins A and vitamin B12. This will help me increase my vitamin D
intake, which I was sadly below the recommendation. Also by including more fatty fish like salmon and tuna in my diet will also help me increase my
vitamin D intake. Another good source of vitamin D intake is the sun, so spending some time early in the mornings without sunscreen will also help me
achieve this goal.

VITAMINS
Introduction
Vitamins are organic food substances found only in living things, i.e. plants and animals. They are essential for our bodies to function properly, for
growth, energy and for our general well–being. With very few exceptions the human body cannot manufacture or synthesize vitamins. They must be
supplied in our diet or in man–made dietary supplements. Some people believe that vitamins can replace food, but that is incorrect. In fact, vitamins
cannot be assimilated without also ingesting food. That is why it is best to take them with a meal.
They are found in very small quantities in food; certain health specialists recommend taking vitamin supplements to increase the supplies in food, while
others insist that a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Vitamin A
Vitamin A, also called retinol, has many functions in the body. In addition to helping the eyes adjust to light changes, vitamin A plays an important role
in bone growth, tooth development, reproduction, cell division, gene expression, and regulation of the immune system. The skin, eyes, and mucous
membranes of the mouth, nose, throat and lungs depend on vitamin A to remain moist. Vitamin A is also an important antioxidant that may play a role
in the prevention of certain cancers.
Food Sources for Vitamin A: Eating a wide variety of foods is the best way to ensure that the body gets enough vitamin A. The retinol, retinal, and
retinoic acid forms of vitamin A are supplied primarily by foods of animal origin such as dairy products, fish and liver. Some foods of plant origin
contain the antioxidant, betacarotene, which the body converts to vitamin A. Beta–carotene, comes from fruits and vegetables, especially those that are
orange or dark green in color. Vitamin A sources also include carrots, pumpkin, winter squash, dark green leafy vegetables and apricots, all of which
are rich in beta–carotene. Vitamin D
Vitamin D plays a critical role in the body's use of calcium and phosphorous. It works by increasing the amount of calcium absorbed from the small
intestine, helping to form and maintain bones. Vitamin D benefits the body by playing a role in immunity and controlling cell growth. Children

acquired immune deficiency syndromes and this makes the individuals susceptible to infectious diseases (7–9). For example, vitamin A plays a crucial
role in the immune system such that a deficiency in this essential vitamin is strongly associated with infectious diseases. Other nutrients that have been
studied with regards to nutritional immunology include zinc, copper, selenium, iron, vitamins C, B6, folic acid, A and E and the essential
(polyunsaturated) fatty acids. A brief discussion of these nutrients follows.
Vitamins and how they affect immunity
Vitamin A
Insufficient vitamin A has been found to predispose humans and other animals to infectious organisms such as Schistosoma mansoni, Trypanosoma

Similarly, supplemental vitamin E has been proven to enhance resistance to infections in lambs, sheep, rodents, turkey and chicks (16). Other
documented benefits of vitamin E include remarkable elevation of specific antibody responses, T–helper cell function, and T and B cells cooperative
effects (17).
In another study, it was discovered that when vitamin E was administered at an estimated dosage of 10 to 50 times the normal dietary intake, it
promoted the mitogenic response to T–cell and B–cell. However, these responses were inhibited when the dosage was increased to about 170–350
times, confirming a dose–dependent trend in animal species. On the contrary, studies with human subjects showed an increase in the number of T–cells
without an accompanying effect on mitogenic responses. When vitamin E was added to an antioxidant cocktail and administered to the subjects, an
increase in both T–cells and mitogenic responses was recorded. This suggests a synergy between vitamin E and the antioxidant nutrients (18).
Pyrodixine
Pyridoxine (B6) deficiency in monkeys, dogs, rats, and chicken is characterized by atrophy of lymphoid tissue. In rats, deficiency of this vitamin leads
to a clearly noticeable decrease in the number of lymphocyte. Some other consequences of pyridoxine deficiency in rodents include decrease in the
formation and function of antibodies,

A Research Study On Vitamin E And Vitamin
Method
The method of S1 was a literature search utilizing the Pubmed database for studies that contained subheadings of diet, antioxidants, and prostatic
neoplasms. The references of selected studies was reviewed to identify additional articles. Studies that only examined plasma levels were excluded.
Selected were 12 intervention studies and 32 observational studies.
Results S1 reported on 16 studies concerning vitamin E and vitamin E components: two case–control, six prospective and four intervention studies
found no effect. However, three case–control and one intervention study found a beneficial effect for PCa. The evidence of vitamin E was inconsistent,
the majority found no benefit for the vitamin E. Concerning selenium and selenium supplements, there were six studies: four intervention, one each
case–control and prospective study. Another study found a group receiving supplemental selenium had a reduced incidence of PCa (RR =.037; 95%
CI, 0.18–0.71; P = 0.002) and follow–up agreed with the original finding. However, the effect was limited to those with the lowest plasma selenium
concentration at baseline, indicating a confounding selenium deficiency. The other five selenium studies found no relationship with PCa. Concerning
vitamin C, six studies reported: one intervention, two prospective and three case–control studies. Two case–control studies reported a reduced PCa risk,
the three others reported no association to PCa. One of the case–control studies that

Either cleaning up his diet by including more Vitamin C rich foods such as fruits and vegetables or adding a Vitamin C supplement to his diet will help
to resolve this problem. If he were going to begin taking a supplement however I would recommend visiting his doctor first and discussing it with him.
Although, I would recommend to him that supplementing with Vitamin C is a possibility I would express to him the benefits of receiving the needed
nutrients through food. Obtaining nutrients through a healthy diet is always going to be the best option.
3. Why does Brian have trouble sleeping, especially when he restricts his diet?
There are a few different reasons to why Brian could be having trouble sleeping based on his diet. One of the reasons could be that because he
consumes so many calories on some days that because he's so full he may be suffering from heartburn, uncomfortably full or sleep apnea. When
Brian fasts he is not taking in any carbohydrates that is one of the main cofactors, which helps tryptophan and serotonin, reach the brain. These two
hormones are responsible for help an individual sleep. Another cause to Brian's insomnia would be due to his alcohol consumption. When a person
drinks alcohol, especially before bed, it can mess with your sleeping patterns. A person can fall immediately into NREM sleep, deep sleep, bypassing

Vitamins And Minerals Of Vitamins
Vitamins and minerals
The vitamins and minerals are substances found in our daily diet foods that promote healthy and balanced development of our body and are also called
micronutrients because they are needed in small amounts thereof to achieve that function. Most essential vitamins can not be synthesized (produced)
by the body, so it can obtain through the balanced intake of vitamins contained in natural foods.
Vitamin deficiency is called hypovitaminosis while excessive vitamin level is called hypervitaminosis.
Vitamins can be classified according to their solubility: if they are water soluble or are lipid soluble. In humans there are 13 vitamins are classified into
two groups: (9) water soluble (8 B complex and vitamin C) and (4) soluble (A, D, E and K).
Water–soluble vitamins
It is coenzymes or precursors of coenzymes, needed for many chemical reactions of metabolism, in this group of vitamins, vitamins B1 (thiamine), B2
(riboflavin), B3 (niacin or nicotinic acid), B5 (pantothenic acid), B6 (pyridoxine), B7 / B8 (biotin), B9 (folic acid), B12 (cobalamin) and vitamin C
(ascorbic acid).
Lipid–soluble vitamins
The lipid–solubles vitamins A, D, E and K, are consumed with foods that contain fat and stored in the liver and fatty tissues. Because it can be stored
in body fat is not necessary to take them every day so it is possible, after a sufficient consumption, survive a period without their input.

Benefits Of Avocado
2.2 Health and Medicinal Benefits of Avocado
Avocado has several medicinal and health benefits (Irvine, 1961 and Pamplona and Roger, 1998). The skin of the avocado is used as an antibiotic,
for ridding the intestinal tract of parasites, and as a remedy for dysentery. The seeds are roasted and pulverized for the treatment of diarrhoea and
dysentery. In the powdered form, the seeds have been used as a dandruff treatment. Pieces of avocado seed are placed in tooth cavities as a toothache
palliative. It is recorded that Amazonian natives used avocado to treat gout. When the pulp of the avocado fruit is added to the diet it helps to reduce
cholesterol levels (Pamplona and Roger, 1998).
Various studies have confirmed that apart from being a source... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, because of the need to utilize surpluses and imperfect fruits, it has been of interest to process the fruit for extended shelf life time and
marketability. Unfortunately, avocado is very sensitive to heating or freezing. The fruit develop off flavours (Bates, 1970) and discoloration (Golan et
al., 1977) even after the minimal thermal treatment needed to destroy spoilage microorganisms and deactivate enzymes (Cruess et al., 1951; Brown,
1972; Gracia et al., 1976). Compounds involved in off flavour and bitterness vary in polarity between neutral lipids to phospholipids (Bates, 1970) and
include 1–acetoxy–2, 4–dihydroxy–n–heptadeca–16–ene and 1, 2, 4– trihydroxy–n–heptadeca–16–ene (Ben–Et et al., 1973). Likewise freezing is
detrimental to texture and flavor of whole avocado. Although rapid freezing of avocado slices by liquid Freon (Smith and Winter,1970) or liquid
nitrogen with proper treatment with ascorbic and malic acids (Hanson, 1976) were claimed to produce an acceptable product, these producers still
wait for large scale implementation. In practice, since the available mechanical equipment separates mashed pulp from the peel after manual
removal of the seed, only mashed avocado can serve as a raw material for processing. Indeed, a frozen puree known as guacamole salad is the only
avocado product of commercial relevance. This product can be stored for weeks frozen at –18В°c (Hester and Stephens, 1970; Salomon et

Nutrition Intake Log Analysis
Nutrition Intake Log Over the period of three day I kept a food record to analyze my nutrient intake. Keeping this food log allowed me to see what and
how much nutrients I was getting from the foods I was consuming. I quickly realized that I had been missing out on some key nutrients, vitamins, and
minerals needed for a healthy life style. Without analyzing your intake, it is hard to see what nutrients you are getting and if you are getting enough of
them. This food record allowed me to see how I can better improve my diet and achieve a healthier lifestyle.
Nutrients and Minerals I am 20 years old, five feet eleven inches, and I weight about 205 pounds. It is recommended that I intake 2800 calories per
day, but as I am trying to lose weight ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As I said before I am trying to lose weight, and this showed me that calories and exercise are not the only things I need to focus on. I realized that I
consume more protein and carbohydrates than I need and both of those get stored as fat if not used. I also consume too much sodium which can
have negative effects on the hear. Sodium makes blood volume increase which makes the heart have to work harder, and over time this leads to
high blood pressure, heat attack, stoke, and even heart failure (Harvard 2016). In regards to this I need to cut down on my sodium intake to
increase my heart health. Calcium and Potassium are two key minerals need for life and I am lacking in both areas. Calcium helps build and repair
tissue, and without it, overtime bones can deteriorate (National Institute of Health 2016). I am not too short of my calcium goal, but I need to
maintain and good calcium intake to maintain good bone health. Potassium "is also an electrolyte, a substance that conducts electricity in the body,"
and with my sever lack of potassium intake I am at risk for heart disease (UMM 2015). Lastly I need to make sure I am getting enough of my
vitamins. I lack the right amounts of Vitamins C, D, and E. Lack ofvitamin can cause many symptoms such as "fatigue, shortness of breath, dizziness,
irregular heart beats, muscle weakness, personality changes, unsteady movements, or mental confusion" (Mayoclinic.org 2016). Most symptoms of

intake. For my vegetables I ate a cup and a half less then I supposed too. For my daily dark– green vegetables I ate a cup and a half less than my
recommended intake. In my red and orange vegetables I ate 4 and half cups less than my recommended value. For my beans and peas I ate a cup
and a half less than my recommended value. For starchy vegetables I am 4 cups lower then my recommended intake. For grains I'm on the low
side. For protein foods I don't eat any seafood and I'm in recommended range for meats and poultry. And I am also in range for nuts, seeds and soy

In order to maintain bone health, vitamin D helps regulate the use of calcium and phosphorus levels. In the remodeling of bone osteoclats, break
down old bone and osteoblasts then come in and lay down a new bone matrix, which increases the bone's density. Calcium and phosphorus attach to
newly formed bone matrix made of osteocalcin, which is produced with the aid of vitamin D and vitamin K. The formation of hydroxyappitie, only
possible with vitamin D, gives strength and structured to bones. With little intake of vitamin D, the absorption of calcium and phosphorus level
significantly lowers in the small intestine. As a result, bone's lack necessary amounts of calcium, causing them to become brittle. Poor, brittle bones
then leads to osteoporosis, which begins around the age of 40 due to the breakdown of bone by osteoclasts exceeding the building process of bone
by osteoblasts. The highest bone build up possible is during the first 30 years of one's life, therefore being only 20, I need to maintain proper vitamin
D levels in order to have the highest absorption of calcium and phosphorus from my daily food consumption (Blake pg. 240–242, 300–305). Also as a

The Effect Of Antioxidants On The Body, And Inadequate...
Participating in cellular processes related to energetic metabolism, antioxidant defense, immune response, tissue and muscle repair, and bone health,
vitamins adequate consumption is important for the maintenance of several metabolic functions in the body, and inadequate intake of vitamins leads to
nutritional deficiencies. Present in food, vitamins are organic compounds that should be present in our daily meal; there are several sorts of essential
vitamins, such as vitamins A, C, D, E, K and B, however most humans cannot produce them in sufficient quantities, or may not produce. The lack of
vitamins may cause diseases or disorders, and when in excess may cause poisoning. Therefore, the diet should always be balanced and varied.
Classification of vitamins is made only by their solubility and not by the position they occupy. Each is responsible for a specific function, regardless of
the group they belong to. Thus, the group of fat–soluble vitamins includes: Vitamin A– Important oxidant that protects cells against free radicals, it
main sources are fruits and strong colored vegetables such as carrots, squash, broccoli and spinach and yellow animal fat foods like liver, eggs and

If Memantine Interferes With Alpha Tocopherol
Although this study was well done, it leaves some unanswered questions. The biggest question is if memantine interferes with alpha tocopherol.
While this study discovered that there is a connection between the two, it did not uncover what that connection was. More research should be
conducted to determine the relationship between alpha tocopherol and memantine. Next, the vitamin E was taken orally via a liquid filled capsule.
According to a study by Dr. Dan Engle published in 2009, compressed pill form of vitamins can have a poor absorption rate. The average person may
not be aware of this research, and the study could have explained why this type of tablet was chosen. With that being said, a study could be conducted
comparing the different between soft–gel tablets and oil to determine which form of vitamin E would give the highest absorption rate. Additionally,
ninety–seven percent of the participants were male, which means that only three percent of the participants were female. Because the focus was a male
population, the question of whether vitamin E would affect females the same way is not supported. Although males and females are similar, they are
also very different, and with that being said, a study that focuses on one sex cannot say that it is true for both sexes without scientific evidence. Lastly,
because the Department of Veterans Affairs Cooperative Studies organized the study, all the participants were veterans. These veterans could have been

Herbal and Alternative Remedies
HERBAL AND ALTERNATIVE MEDICATIONS
Herbal remedies come from plants. If possible, choose a remedy which has been standardized, i.e. the contents are approximately the same in each
bottle or tablet you buy. Plant remedies are not always safer than ordinary medicines. All of them can have side–effects and interact with other
medicines. Supplements include vitamins, minerals and animal and plant products, such as cod liver oil. They can also have side–effects and interact
with other medicines. Some people take supplements, like vitamin C in high doses, but this can damage the liver or kidneys. Many supplements have a
recommended daily intake (RDI), or allowance (RDA). Do not go beyond this dose without talking to an experienced health professional.
CAMs and mental health problems:
Many CAMs have been used for mental health problems, but there is little good evidence to support their use. Some of these treatments may work, but
most have not been thoroughly tested. The studies have often been too small to give a clear answer. We know most about the treatments for
depression, anxiety and insomnia. Despite the lack of evidence, people all over the world take CAMs, and many report that they find them helpful.
Ultimately, whether taking CAMs is a good idea depends on individual circumstances. We recommend that you talk to your GP or mental health team
first.
If you are considering taking CAMs, you should seek specialist advice if:

Why Do People Use Multivitamin Supplements?
Multivitamin supplements are an easy and convenient way to fill the nutritional holes of a poor diet. They generally contain a blend of essential
vitamins and minerals, to which antioxidants, amino acids or fatty acids are sometimes added. These supplements are effective solutions for health
conditions caused by malnutrition, being widely used for medical purposes. These dietary supplements are also handy in other situations. But the
benefits of regular use by seemingly healthy people raise doubts among specialists. Several systematic reviews of the gathered evidence have failed to
encounter significant health benefits from this type of supplementation in the general population. There are, however, some arguments in favor of the
systematic use of multivitamins by the population. And these arguments show that it's not only people with specific needs that can benefit from these
supplements.

D vitamins are necessary to facilitate the dietary absorption of essential minerals like phosphate, zinc or calcium. They are especially important in the
metabolism of calcium. A deficiency in calcium metabolism by the body is at the base of conditions such as osteoporosis, hypocalcaemia, osteomalcia
or rickets. Non–alcoholic fatty liver disease and depressive symptoms have been linked to low vitamin D. Vitamin D refers to a group of fat–soluble
secosteroids. These compounds are generally synthethized by the body through skin exposure to sunlight. This mechanism is compromised by a
sedentary lifestyle. Vitamin D may also be acquired through diet, but there are few dietary sources. Dietary supplementation use would be particularly
useful to sedentary people and to dark–skinned people living in temperate

Many people may benefits from a balanced vitamin and mineral supplement, including those who have irregular eating habits, skip meals, or eat
large amounts of processed and refined foods. There are also certain groups of people who are at particular risk of nutrient deficiencies because of
other lifestyle, environmental or disease factors. Some people see supplements as health insurance and some take them for what they see as their
specific benefits. For example, vitamin C for colds. However, it is important to select your vitamins based upon what you really need. The amount of
vitamin you take should be based upon your own requirements. Proper dosageis very important since a program designed for health maintenance
differs from one designed to overcome a specific disorder. All vitamin supplements work best when taken in combination with food (Sy 2002). Even if
you take a vitamin supplement, you still need to have a balance healthy diet because there are still beneficial chemicals needed by the body that can be

Three known B–vitamin deficiencies are beriberi, pellagra and pernicious anemia, which are not common in the United States but can occur when
people omit certain foods from their diet or over eat certain foods. These vitamins may be obtained but eating different vegetables, fruits, grains, nuts
and dairy products. As the same with fat soluble vitamins, water soluble vitamins can have effects should you become deficient in certain vitamins:
Vitamin C deficiency can cause easy bruising, dry skin, scurvy and sore joints but having too much may cause bloating, diarrhea, cramps and possible
kidney stones. Vitamin C can be obtained through many fruits and dark green vegetables.
B–Vitamins can be obtained in many grains, white rice, white flour and pastas. As with grains and rice, these products are normally washed or
"polished" prior to being used, washes their outer layers. Because of this thiamin deficiency and beriberi increased. This only happened in some areas.
Overall fat soluble and water soluble vitamins are of great importance to one's body to help maintain, heal, and grow to stay healthy. As we look to
avoid not to be deficient in our vitamins by eating the recommended daily allowance (RDA) and attempt to avoid taking supplements unless necessary
since most of our food that we intake contain the necessary vitamins for a healthy body. Of course should one need to take

Alzheimer 's Disease ( Ad ) Is A Neurodegenerative...
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative condition that affects the memory function, which is a huge public health concern among the elderly
population. It has affected more than five million individuals in the United States and that number is expected to quadruple by the 2050 if interventions
are not found. AD has a huge affect on the world not only by the number of deaths that it is causing but also the amount of health care costs reaching
around 100 billion dollars. Because of the increase of AD throughout the globe, the aging population should consider the intake of certain vitamins and
nutrients in their daily lives to possibly reduce or prevent the onset of AD. Nutritional factors and nutritional deficiencies have a very strong correlation
with cognitive decline as illustrated throughout the study done by Angelo Parigi, Francesco Panza, Cristiano Capurso, and Vincenzo Solfrizzi. Ones
dietary habits and nutritional deficiencies have a huge determining factor on cognitive impairment on an individual with AD. B vitamins have a
relationship with cognitive dysfunction in many observational studies as well as clinical and epidemiological studies. Another type of vitamin that was
found to correspond with cognitive impairment is folate (B9) and cobalamine (B12), the studies that were done on these two types of vitamins did find
the determinants with cognitive impairment in AD. The elderly populations is among the highest at risk for nutritional deficiencies, with

Cod liver oil, believe it or not, is a potent Vitamin A resource. Read the label to be well–informed, ensuring that it was processed with "low oxygen"
and was "vacuum distilled." This will keep it from going rancid.
People lacking vitamin A are prone to dry, scaly skin, vision difficulty, especially at night, infants may suffer growth defects, and women who are trying
to conceive may experience difficulty.
Excessive amounts – again, moderation is key. Vitamin A in excess can cause headaches, nausea, hair loss, bone growth deficiency that could lead to
abnormalities, and liver damage.
Vitamin B, the Supplement & the Food Sources
Like vitamin A, vitamin B is significant to healthy skin. Several B vitamin supplements are on the market that are used specifically to combat the

food group that I did OK with was protein. However; I was under on all of the other food groups such as grains, vegetables, fruits, dairy and oils. This
may have something to do with the number of calories that were consumed within that two–day period. This report was based on a 2400 calorie
allowance and the number of calories that I consumed was 934 calories short of that allowance. The report also seems to be based on a full week
so that could have also played a role in the food groups not being met. The number of grains that were allowed to me was eight ounces and I had
zero ounces of whole grains and three ounces of refined grains. I was given at least three cups of vegetables and I did not consume any dark green,
red, orange, beans or peas, I only consumed one half of a cup of starchy vegetables. Two cups of fruits were a target for me, however, I did not eat
any whole fruits and had one fourth cup of fruit juice. Although, I only had one fourth cup of dairy with cheese and zero cups of milk or yogurt, the
main target was set at three cups. As I mentioned before, the protein portion of the report was met, with the target being set at six and a half ounces
and that target being met with five ounces of meat, poultry and eggs and one and a half of an ounce of seafood. Looking at the nutrients report, my

Vitamin Deficiency : A Widespread Problem All Around The...
Vitamin deficiencies are a widespread problem all around the world. They are caused by very poor eating habits or due to people living in low
income areas. The body requires many different types of vitamins and minerals for the development of the body and to prevent diseases and to keep
our body healthy. These vitamins and minerals are known as micronutrients. These micronutrients aren't produced naturally in our body so they have to
be consumed in from the meals we eat. This is why it is so important to have a healthy balanced diet, so that our body gets the sufficient amount of

It is dangerous to consume large amounts of a fat–soluble vitamin since too much of anything is bad our bodies.
The lack of vitamin A is the leading cause of blindness in children. The deficiency has an intimate effect on the immune system, it increases the
chance of death from malaria, measles and diarrhea. Due to vitamin A deficiencies there's also the risk of getting serious infections. Some symptoms
include night blindness, dry skin and frequent injections. Around 250,000 to 500,000 children become blind every year because of vitamin A
deficiency. Half of these kids die within a year of losing their vision. For newborn babies the best source of vitamin A is breast milk. Vitamin A
deficiency is a significant problem in developing countries in Africa and Southeast Asia.
Thiamine deficiency is the main cause of nerve and muscle damage and can affect the heart. Thiamine is a significant part of our nervous system and
it helps our body turn carbohydrates into energy that is needed for everyday life. Lack of thiamine can result in weight loss and confusion and
short–term memory loss. Some symptoms include loss of appetite, weakness, pain in the limbs, shortness of breath, and swollen feet or legs. In the
United States, thiamine deficiency is mostly seen in people who have a very high alcohol consumption level. Alcohol consumption reduces the
absorption of thiamine and due to this the body has a hard time to store

A Research Study : Dr. Snowdon
Dr. Snowdon, an epidemiologist from The University of Kentucky launched a scientific study in 1986 that would forevermore reshape our ideas
about 'growing old.' This study, known as The Nun study consisted of 678 School Sisters of Notre Dame. The concept of The Nun Study was to
inquire information about Alzheimer's disease such as how does one get Alzheimer's? What lifestyle changes can we do to prevent it? Is it something
we do when we are young that alters our brain? Are there any medications or herbal supplements to halt the disease if one is diagnosed? Dr. Snowdon
had many questions about this specific disease and thought what study would be more suitable to conduct then of the sisters who lived very similar
lifestyles. These sisters, majority of them being school teachers ranged in ages from 74 to 106. One of the early theories Dr. Snowdon discovered was
that the sisters who graduated college had a much higher possibility of surviving to old age. This was not surprising to Dr. Snowdon as he mentioned
that studies existed from the nineteenth century about education and lifespan. Dr. Snowdon decided to head to Kentucky to meet with William
Markesbery, a neurologist. He has a long history of treating Alzheimer's patients and had performed many autopsies on thousands of brains, which were
diagnosed with the disease. A notable characteristic about Markesbery is that he conducted his examinations in The Nun Study blind, without a clue of
the individual's mental status.

Factors That Increase My Dairy Intake

  • 1. Factors That Increase My Dairy Intake Looking at the above increase list, I decided to increase my portion of vegetables to at least 1.5 cup by including more variety of veggies to my morning breakfast smoothies and as a side of salad or steamed veggies at every meal. Vegetables are excellent sources of an array of vitamins especially brightly colored veggies and dark green veggies. By including more veggies in my diet, I am essentially helping myself "up" my intake of vitamins as well, since I am especially low in vitamin A, vitamin B1, vitamin B2, vitamin D, vitamin E and folate, by increasing consumption of veggies from different subgroups like brightly colored veggies ( e.g. sweet potatoes, carrots and red peppers) , dark leafy greens (e.g. kale, collard and spinach) and cruciferous vegetables (e.g. broccoli, brussels sprouts and cauliflower), which are packed with vitamins like vitamin A, vitamin B1, vitamin B2, vitamin B6, vitamin C, vitamin E and folate. Next on my list, is to increase my dairy intake by including low–fat yogurt and fortified soy milk, for example, 1 cup of Silk soy milk provides not only vitamin D, but also vitamins A and vitamin B12. This will help me increase my vitamin D intake, which I was sadly below the recommendation. Also by including more fatty fish like salmon and tuna in my diet will also help me increase my vitamin D intake. Another good source of vitamin D intake is the sun, so spending some time early in the mornings without sunscreen will also help me achieve this goal. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. vitamins Essay VITAMINS Introduction Vitamins are organic food substances found only in living things, i.e. plants and animals. They are essential for our bodies to function properly, for growth, energy and for our general well–being. With very few exceptions the human body cannot manufacture or synthesize vitamins. They must be supplied in our diet or in man–made dietary supplements. Some people believe that vitamins can replace food, but that is incorrect. In fact, vitamins cannot be assimilated without also ingesting food. That is why it is best to take them with a meal. They are found in very small quantities in food; certain health specialists recommend taking vitamin supplements to increase the supplies in food, while others insist that a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Vitamin A Vitamin A, also called retinol, has many functions in the body. In addition to helping the eyes adjust to light changes, vitamin A plays an important role in bone growth, tooth development, reproduction, cell division, gene expression, and regulation of the immune system. The skin, eyes, and mucous membranes of the mouth, nose, throat and lungs depend on vitamin A to remain moist. Vitamin A is also an important antioxidant that may play a role in the prevention of certain cancers. Food Sources for Vitamin A: Eating a wide variety of foods is the best way to ensure that the body gets enough vitamin A. The retinol, retinal, and retinoic acid forms of vitamin A are supplied primarily by foods of animal origin such as dairy products, fish and liver. Some foods of plant origin contain the antioxidant, betacarotene, which the body converts to vitamin A. Beta–carotene, comes from fruits and vegetables, especially those that are orange or dark green in color. Vitamin A sources also include carrots, pumpkin, winter squash, dark green leafy vegetables and apricots, all of which are rich in beta–carotene. Vitamin D Vitamin D plays a critical role in the body's use of calcium and phosphorous. It works by increasing the amount of calcium absorbed from the small intestine, helping to form and maintain bones. Vitamin D benefits the body by playing a role in immunity and controlling cell growth. Children ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Vitamin A Research Paper acquired immune deficiency syndromes and this makes the individuals susceptible to infectious diseases (7–9). For example, vitamin A plays a crucial role in the immune system such that a deficiency in this essential vitamin is strongly associated with infectious diseases. Other nutrients that have been studied with regards to nutritional immunology include zinc, copper, selenium, iron, vitamins C, B6, folic acid, A and E and the essential (polyunsaturated) fatty acids. A brief discussion of these nutrients follows. Vitamins and how they affect immunity Vitamin A Insufficient vitamin A has been found to predispose humans and other animals to infectious organisms such as Schistosoma mansoni, Trypanosoma cruzi, Sallmonela typhi, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Similarly, supplemental vitamin E has been proven to enhance resistance to infections in lambs, sheep, rodents, turkey and chicks (16). Other documented benefits of vitamin E include remarkable elevation of specific antibody responses, T–helper cell function, and T and B cells cooperative effects (17). In another study, it was discovered that when vitamin E was administered at an estimated dosage of 10 to 50 times the normal dietary intake, it promoted the mitogenic response to T–cell and B–cell. However, these responses were inhibited when the dosage was increased to about 170–350 times, confirming a dose–dependent trend in animal species. On the contrary, studies with human subjects showed an increase in the number of T–cells without an accompanying effect on mitogenic responses. When vitamin E was added to an antioxidant cocktail and administered to the subjects, an increase in both T–cells and mitogenic responses was recorded. This suggests a synergy between vitamin E and the antioxidant nutrients (18). Pyrodixine Pyridoxine (B6) deficiency in monkeys, dogs, rats, and chicken is characterized by atrophy of lymphoid tissue. In rats, deficiency of this vitamin leads to a clearly noticeable decrease in the number of lymphocyte. Some other consequences of pyridoxine deficiency in rodents include decrease in the formation and function of antibodies, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. A Research Study On Vitamin E And Vitamin Method The method of S1 was a literature search utilizing the Pubmed database for studies that contained subheadings of diet, antioxidants, and prostatic neoplasms. The references of selected studies was reviewed to identify additional articles. Studies that only examined plasma levels were excluded. Selected were 12 intervention studies and 32 observational studies. Results S1 reported on 16 studies concerning vitamin E and vitamin E components: two case–control, six prospective and four intervention studies found no effect. However, three case–control and one intervention study found a beneficial effect for PCa. The evidence of vitamin E was inconsistent, the majority found no benefit for the vitamin E. Concerning selenium and selenium supplements, there were six studies: four intervention, one each case–control and prospective study. Another study found a group receiving supplemental selenium had a reduced incidence of PCa (RR =.037; 95% CI, 0.18–0.71; P = 0.002) and follow–up agreed with the original finding. However, the effect was limited to those with the lowest plasma selenium concentration at baseline, indicating a confounding selenium deficiency. The other five selenium studies found no relationship with PCa. Concerning vitamin C, six studies reported: one intervention, two prospective and three case–control studies. Two case–control studies reported a reduced PCa risk, the three others reported no association to PCa. One of the case–control studies that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. Benefits Of Avocado 2.2 Health and Medicinal Benefits of Avocado Avocado has several medicinal and health benefits (Irvine, 1961 and Pamplona and Roger, 1998). The skin of the avocado is used as an antibiotic, for ridding the intestinal tract of parasites, and as a remedy for dysentery. The seeds are roasted and pulverized for the treatment of diarrhoea and dysentery. In the powdered form, the seeds have been used as a dandruff treatment. Pieces of avocado seed are placed in tooth cavities as a toothache palliative. It is recorded that Amazonian natives used avocado to treat gout. However, because of the need to utilize surpluses and imperfect fruits, it has been of interest to process the fruit for extended shelf life time and marketability. Unfortunately, avocado is very sensitive to heating or freezing. The fruit develop off flavours (Bates, 1970) and discoloration (Golan et al., 1977) even after the minimal thermal treatment needed to destroy spoilage microorganisms and deactivate enzymes (Cruess et al., 1951; Brown, 1972; Gracia et al., 1976). Compounds involved in off flavour and bitterness vary in polarity between neutral lipids to phospholipids (Bates, 1970) and include 1–acetoxy–2, 4–dihydroxy–n–heptadeca–16–ene and 1, 2, 4– trihydroxy–n–heptadeca–16–ene (Ben–Et et al., 1973). Likewise freezing is detrimental to texture and flavor of whole avocado. Although rapid freezing of avocado slices by liquid Freon (Smith and Winter,1970) or liquid nitrogen with proper treatment with ascorbic and malic acids (Hanson, 1976) were claimed to produce an acceptable product, these producers still wait for large scale implementation. In practice, since the available mechanical equipment separates mashed pulp from the peel after manual removal of the seed, only mashed avocado can serve as a raw material for processing. Indeed, a frozen puree known as guacamole salad is the only avocado product of commercial relevance. This product can be stored for weeks frozen at –18В°c (Hester and Stephens, 1970; Salomon et ... Additionally, ninety–seven percent of the participants were male, which means that only three percent of the participants were female. Because the focus was a male population, the question of whether vitamin E would affect females the same way is not supported. Although males and females are similar, they are also very different, and with that being said, a study that focuses on one sex cannot say that it is true for both sexes without scientific evidence. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative condition that affects the memory function, which is a huge public health concern among the elderly population. It has affected more than five million individuals in the United States and that number is expected to quadruple by the 2050 if interventions are not found. AD has a huge affect on the world not only by the number of deaths that it is causing but also the amount of health care costs reaching around 100 billion dollars. Because of the increase of AD throughout the globe, the aging population should consider the intake of certain vitamins and nutrients in their daily lives to possibly reduce or prevent the onset of AD. Nutritional factors and nutritional deficiencies have a very strong correlation with cognitive decline as illustrated throughout the study done by Angelo Parigi, Francesco Panza, Cristiano Capurso, and Vincenzo Solfrizzi. Ones dietary habits and nutritional deficiencies have a huge determining factor on cognitive impairment on an individual with AD. B vitamins have a relationship with cognitive dysfunction in many observational studies as well as clinical and epidemiological studies. Another type of vitamin that was found to correspond with cognitive impairment is folate (B9) and cobalamine (B12), the studies that were done on these two types of vitamins did find the determinants with cognitive impairment in AD. The only food group that I did OK with was protein. However; I was under on all of the other food groups such as grains, vegetables, fruits, dairy and oils. This may have something to do with the number of calories that were consumed within that two–day period. This report was based on a 2400 calorie allowance and the number of calories that I consumed was 934 calories short of that allowance. The report also seems to be based on a full week so that could have also played a role in the food groups not being met. The number of grains that were allowed to me was eight ounces and I had zero ounces of whole grains and three ounces of refined grains. I was given at least three cups of vegetables and I did not consume any dark green, red, orange, beans or peas, I only consumed one half of a cup of starchy vegetables. Two cups of fruits were a target for me, however, I did not eat any whole fruits and had one fourth cup of fruit juice. Although, I only had one fourth cup of dairy with cheese and zero cups of milk or yogurt, the main target was set at three cups. As I mentioned before, the protein portion of the report was met, with the target being set at six and a half ounces and that target being met with five ounces of meat, poultry and eggs and one and a half of an ounce of seafood. • 38. A Research Study : Dr. Snowdon Dr. Snowdon, an epidemiologist from The University of Kentucky launched a scientific study in 1986 that would forevermore reshape our ideas about 'growing old.' This study, known as The Nun study consisted of 678 School Sisters of Notre Dame. The concept of The Nun Study was to inquire information about Alzheimer's disease such as how does one get Alzheimer's? What lifestyle changes can we do to prevent it? Is it something we do when we are young that alters our brain? Are there any medications or herbal supplements to halt the disease if one is diagnosed? Dr. Snowdon had many questions about this specific disease and thought what study would be more suitable to conduct then of the sisters who lived very similar lifestyles. These sisters, majority of them being school teachers ranged in ages from 74 to 106. One of the early theories Dr. Snowdon discovered was that the sisters who graduated college had a much higher possibility of surviving to old age. This was not surprising to Dr. Snowdon as he mentioned that studies existed from the nineteenth century about education and lifespan. Dr. Snowdon decided to head to Kentucky to meet with William Markesbery, a neurologist. He has a long history of treating Alzheimer's patients and had performed many autopsies on thousands of brains, which were diagnosed with the disease. A notable characteristic about Markesbery is that he conducted his examinations in The Nun Study blind, without a clue of the individual's mental status. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
