2. Aim of the Project
• The purpose of this research is to explore using constructivist theory
the way homework is recognized within the family home.
• This will be done by: focus groups, semi-structured
interviews, observations, surveys and a recorded scenario response.
• From the deep research into the supported literature on the topic of
homework's contribution to a students progress I wanted to develop a
better understanding of how to utilize both home and school situations.
3. Background
• The topic of homework delegation has been
subject to a lot of hype on the media. (Baker
2012;Bennett & Kalish 2006; Clarke 2009;Cooper 1989,2006; Kohn 2006; Marzano &
Pickering 2007; Mclure 2014; Trautwein, Lüdtke, Pieper)
• Against: homework has a minimal positive
effect. (Varies with grade level) (Cooper 2006)
• For: bridges the gap between home and at
school learning. (NSW Department of Ed
2012)
5. Research Question
• Does homework support the constructivism
theory in teaching and learning?
• Learning is active
• Personal interpretation of the world
• Knowledge is constructed and shaped from
experience
• Authentic tasks and assessment
6. Constructivism
• Fundamentally, constructivism says that people
construct their own understanding and
knowledge of the world through experiencing
things and reflecting on those experiences.
• (Geison 2004)
9. Sampling
• As all sampling is purposeful to ensure that
the diverse perspectives of people I am able to
gain information, which will be helpful in my
proposed research.
• I will aim to use 1 grade level and if possible
extend to more grades or even whole school.
10. Analysing
• The ultimate outcome of data analysis is to
enable participants to clearly understand the
nature of events that are the focus of the
research process.
• Find key issues and experiences in the data
that have a significant impact on the subject.
This will give me a starting point for sorting
through data and constructing conceptual
frameworks.
