2. Common Core
Common Core Standards was designed for career
and college readiness.
It highlights the areas of reading, writing, language
and speaking
It integrates reading, writing, science and social
studies (making thematic units available).
Raises the bar for what students should know by 12th
grade
3. RtI and CCSS
RtI focuses on whether the students are responding
to the instruction.
Because Common Core is being adapted by many
states it is important to know how that will affect RtI.
According to the article by Karen K. Wixson &
Marjorie Y. Lipson many changes will occur.
4. RtI and CCSS
For example it is clear that teachers look at the “big five”
to evaluate students
1. Phonemic awareness
2. Phonics
3. Fluency
4. Vocabulary
5. Comprehension
Now the first 3 are under the “foundational skills” which is
focused in grade k-5 and vocabulary is under the
language strand while comprehension is everywhere.
5. RtI and CCSS
New assessments are being introduced and there’s
an emphasis on higher order skills, increased
content knowledge, and ability to engage with
complex texts
Students will be tested by reading writing and orally
proving they understand.
The IRA’s goal is to intervene early so that students
can be a part of the CCSS curriculum.
