Improving the RtI
                       Triangle
Mary Abbott & Howard Wills (2012): Improving the Upside-Down
Response-to-Intervention Triangle With a Systematic, Effective
Elementary School Reading Team, Preventing School Failure:
Alternative Education for Children and Youth, 56:1, 37-46
 Many schools and districts have
  implemented the RtI framework.
 “The goal of RtI is to create and maintain
an on-going process that uses student
  performance to guide implementation”
  (Abbott & Willis, 2012).

RtI…
How RtI looks…
 According to research done by Abbott and Willis it is
important have a good reading team in schools to
   have a successful RtI program.
 There are five important components that make this
   up and they are:
1. Organize an RtI reading team that has the power to
     create, implement and maintain comprehensive
     change plan across grade levels.
2. Own the data.
3. Encourage mastery learning.
4. Involve all staff members.
5. Create a team that solves the schools academic
     problems.

Five Benchmarks for a good RtI
team
 The RtI reading team should include
  teachers, paraprofessionals and
  adminstrators.
 Ensures that time is being focused on
  reading instruction
 Collect data and make sure that
  classroom teachers are improving their
  instruction as needed.

Reading team
 According to Abbott and Willis data drives
  RtI.
 the RtI reading team should embrace and
use the data to guide practice and
  intervention.

Own Data
 RtI team should encourage mastery
  learning by:
1. Implementing appropriate error
    correction
2. Let students respond frequently through
    the lesson and…
3. Increase read aloud time

Maximize small-group and
universal curricula
 Because students who are in RtI need
more help all staff members should be
  important when providing interventions to
  the students.
 Volunteers should spend a small portion
of the day with groups who need
  behavioral or academic help.

All Staff Wanted!
 When a school makes changes it is
important to have someone that anyone
can go to, including staff, parents and
  students.
 The RtI team should be able to answer
questions and make plans for teachers so
  that they don’t feel overwhelmed.
