Introduction
The first time fingerprint comparison evidence was used in court against a defendant was in 1892 in
Argentina [1]
For purposes of forensic identification in cases of law enforcement and other areas where human
identification is needed, fingerprints have been widely acclaimed to be of an invaluable importance
and has therefore seen a close to unanimous acceptance as the gold standard of forensic evidence
where biometric identity is concerned. Recently however, as was rarely done in times past, the
scientific foundations of fingerprint expert testimonies in court are beginning to be challenged [2].
There are some commentators who now query the scientific validity of forensic fingerprint
identification. Reference has been made to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These methods hopefully can be used to introduce some quantitative statistical measures to the
fingerprint evidence.
Before going into comparing both proposed statistical approaches, it would seem appropriate to take
a brief look at the ACE–V method of fingerprint evidence analysis in the next section, to highlight
areas where these proposed methods have advantages over it.
2. A brief description of the ACE–V Method
In ACE–V, 'A' stands for Analysis, 'C' stands for Comparison, 'E' represents Evaluation and 'V' is for
Verification. These are the various stages involved in the examination of fingerprint evidence by
experts in the field before arriving at a conclusion on a set of prints which can be in any of these
three conclusions viz: Exclusion, Individuation, or Inconclusive.
2.1 The Analysis stage
This stage begins when the fingerprint expert examines a latent print and first makes a decision as to
whether it contains details that are sufficient quantitatively and qualitatively to exceed the 'Value'
threshold standard. If in his estimation the print does exceed the quality and quantity Value standard,
then he continues with the analysis.[1] According to [4], most of the prints recovered from crime
scenes are considered of no value.
2.2 The Comparison stage.
The fingerprint expert for the first time looks at the suspect's 10 fingerprints (the exemplar

The Theory of Evolusion Revised Essay
There is a monkey in your family tree. Whether that is fact or theory, and the difference, Stephen Jay
Gould explains in, "Evolution as Fact and Theory", which appeared in the May 1981 issue of
Discover Magazine. Mr. Gould was described by the New York Times as, "one of the most
influential evolutionary biologists of the 20th century" (Yoon). He wants to show how the
creationist's have built their argument against evolution on sand, and the evolutionist's argument
built on solid rock, as any paleontologist would prefer. It is a war of words, where their meaning,
use and misuse, determine on which side you stand. His argument is not perfect, but using lack of
perfection as evidence of evolution, he makes the case quite convincingly. It is ... Show more

In contrast, Gould logically lays out three facts to buttress his evolution stance. He states, "... we
have abundant, direct, observational evidence of evolution in action, from both the field and the
laboratory" (440). The other two: the imperfection of nature, and transitions in the fossil record,
"...rest upon inference", which is then explained to the reader (441). Up to this point, Gould's
argument follows the path of logic, reason, and objectivity. However, as he picks apart the
creationists argument, he ratchets up his emotions a notch or two. He readily confesses, "If I should
sound sharp or bitter, indeed I am – for I have become a major target of these practices" (442).
Justified or not, he seems to take personally, criticism of the theory, "punctuated equilibrium", which
he and colleague Niles Eldredge developed. The tone is angry, but he uses direct quotes from his
opponents to show how he has been misquoted and his message twisted, which infuriates him.
Duane Gish wrote, "...according to Gould, a reptile laid an egg from which the first bird, feathers
and all, was produced", which is just one example (443). The author manages largely, to reign in his
anger, and he sounds almost conciliatory when admitting to the arrogance of the scientific
community. Claiming to be mainly saddened by the sometimes–bitter feud with creationists, the
impression is of someone who is tired. Tired of fighting a

Sellick: The Use Of Cricoid Pressure
The use of the Sellick maneuver, better known as cricoid pressure, was first described by Monro in
1774 in the treatment of drowning victims but became more widely utilized after the method was
introduced in a journal article in 1961 by Sellick. It has since become common practice in the
anesthesia community, but has recently come under scrutiny in terms of its effectiveness and utility.
I have had experience in its use but have not come to a definitive conclusion regarding its overall
benefit.
In the 1961 Sellick described the practice of occluding the esophagus to assist in endotracheal
intubation. He recommends placing anterior pressure on the Cricoid cartilage against the cervical
vertebral bodies, occluding the esophagus, and leaving ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I personally have used in certain cases of rapid sequence induction in the field and can appreciate its
benefits. I have yet to see it used to prevent regurgitation but can speak to its use in assisting
visualization of the vocal cords in patients with challenging airway anatomy, especially those with
airways that lie more anterior. However, this was typically in scenarios with crews that I have been
working with for years, and each practitioner present was comfortable in the stressful environment
of a rapid sequence induction. Unfortunately, one person's experiences does little to prove or
disprove what has been discussed. Considering the amount of recent literature dedicated to this topic
and the polarizing nature of this practice necessitates a thorough evaluation of the method, and when
and where it should be implemented. I feel it very much has a place in the area of endotracheal
intubation, but only in those circumstances where it is absolutely necessary, and only done by those
who have been well trained in its

Channeling Communication Between the World and Us Through...
By definition, sense perception is whereby the idea of sense is referred to the external stimulus in
which we perceive our knowledge through while perception is defined to be the awareness towards
something through our senses. Long before we learned how to use language, reasoning, faith, or
emotions, we have already been making use of our external stimuluses' to make sense or even be
conscious of the world. This makes sense perception our primary source of obtaining knowledge
since it is the only way for us to interact with the world around us. However, though it plays a
requisite part for us in attaining knowledge, sense perception can both impede and limit our
understanding of the world. In this essay, the strengths and weaknesses of ... Show more content on

This is similar to the way in which knowledge is deduced in human sciences. For example, in
Anthropology, anthropologists make claims based on the observations they make of a particular
community. These observations can range from the clothes the people in the community adorn, to
the way in which they interact with one another. Without observing the community while being
immersed in it, theories of communities or about their culture will never surface.
While sense perception serves as our fundamental way of knowing, its strength of it being our
predominant method of acquiring knowledge is its weakness as well.
Due to the imperfection of our sensory organs, it generates inconsistent information gathered which
subsequently affects the way we perceive knowledge. In the case of natural sciences, such a
Biology, the obtainment of raw data sometimes requires the process of the image. For example, one
might need to measure the size of the cell during the study of cytology. Human error is involved the
moment a process of what is observed needs to be carried out. From various angles, the cell may
appear slightly larger, while in other angles, slightly smaller, resulting in a variation of the data
obtained. In such a case, how can one deduce that the data collected by one person is indeed
accurate or false? Besides, we as humans generate our biasness towards everything, subconsciously
or consciously. This results in us never being able to grasp a situation

Selcting an Approach for a Qualitative Research Plan Essay
Selecting an Approach for a Qualitative Research Plan
Creswell (2013) contends that "we need to identify our approach to qualitative inquiry in order to
present it as a sophisticated study, to offer it as a specific type so that reviewers can properly assess
it, and...to offer some way of organizing ideas that can be grounded in the scholarly literature of
qualitative research" (p. 69). Although I believe all three arguments cited by the author are
important, this week's readings and discussion emphasized the third reason in particular. Indeed,
reviewing the five approaches provided me with ideas regarding how to investigate and explore the
topic. Although I am still struggling with some of the details and aspects, a rough framework is ...

Through interviews and extensive data analysis the phenomenological study will aim to summarize
"what the individuals have experienced and how they have experienced it" to arrive at the essence of
the issue under investigation (Moustakas, 1994 as cited by Creswell, 2013, p. 79). Given the issue,
transcendental phenomenology appears to be a desirable approach to gain a better understanding of
the issue due to "bracketing" and its aim at perceiving a phenomenon new, fresh, and "for the first
time" (Creswell, 2013, p. 80).
Conducting a case study appears equally appropriate. Since case studies consist of "qualitative
approaches in which the investigator explores a real–life, contemporary bounded system or multiple
systems over time, through detailed, in–depth data collection involving multiple sources of
information, and reports a case description and case themes" one could emphasize the changes in
democratic participation as well as the motivators (Creswell, 2013, p. 97). Furthermore, case studies
provide a wide array of approaches, including both quantitative and qualitative elements as well as
explanatory, exploratory, and descriptive directions that could be used to investigate the proposed
question (Creswell, 2013). Case selection would be purposeful, probably focusing on one to five
NGOs engaging with the government to influence public policy and the people involved with the
same.

Discoveries of Maria Montessori
2. What are the discoveries of Dr. Maria Montessori ?
Dr. Maria Montessori was a keen observer of children. She used her observational and experimental
proclivities from her medical background to develop, what we might today call, a Constructivist
understanding of the process of learning. She studied them scientifically. If she saw some unusual
behavior in a child, she would say,"I won't believe it now, I shall if it happens again". She studied
the conditions in which the children would perform those actions.
She thought education always involved three elements: The learner, the Prepared Environment, and
the Trained Adult.
The basic areas in which she gave importance was freedom, independence, respect and
responsibility.
She believed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The inner drive to work is sufficient to reach their goal if it corresponded with the inner
developmental need. With the provision of the necessary conditions and necessary environment the
child without the instigation of an adult can reach his goal. 2. When an inner need to do something
meets with the inner urge spontaneous Interest is generated. When the inner urge or the Interest
finds a suitable working condition it leads to spontaneous Repetition. When this spontaneous
Repetition of an activity is done with interest the natural result is Concentration. Concentration is
not the end product of education, its just the beginning. Any true learning happens with
concentration. The children revealed that given the right conditions they would work with
concentration. 3. Very young children need order for their development. This order need not be only
with things in the environment but also with values, functions and other human activities. The child
needs to see human values like 'Say the Truth' being practiced. But the adults do not practice in the
everyday life. The child gets confused and this can create a warp in his development. Similarly any
object in the environment being used for a purpose other than it is meant for creates disturbance.

Essay on Sexual Strategies Theory: Choosing a Mate
In the article the researchers were trying to challenge the sexual strategies theory. It seems as though
sexual strategies theory is different genders having different preferences when choosing a mate, in
the case of long and short term relationships. The hypothesis at first was that both boys and girls felt
that attractiveness was important. Girls would be more inclined to date someone because of social
status and that boys would be the complete opposite. They also expected that social status would
only become important when the person is attractive and social status would be important no matter
if the person is attractive on no for girls. The last thing that was tested was according to Ha (2009)
"the potential moderator effects of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They also rated several different qualities of a mate ranking them from less to most important.
When the adolescents were rating the different characteristics the results were as followed, boys
rated attractiveness higher than the girls and social status wasn't important to either group. In the
vignette portion of the research, when the social status and the attractiveness were displayed on
pictures, it showed that both groups found attractiveness important. Social status was only important
for the boys when the mate was attractive and the girls found social status was important whether
attractive or not. Lastly, as stated by Ha (2009) "self–perceived mate value moderated the
relationship between attractiveness and dating desire for both boys and girls." Also stated be Ha
(2009) "adolescents who perceived themselves as having high mate value showed more dating
desire if the other person was attractive compared to adolescents who perceived themselves as
having a lower mate value."
There is a difference between male and female preferences in a potential mate. As stated in the book
Berger (1990) "men best serve the needs of the species by reproducing as frequently as possible."
With that being said men have the tendency to be attracted to women on high fertility, which
coincides with being youthful and attractiveness. That's why most men chose younger women.
Women have a different outlook when looking for a potential mate. Women are more interested in
men

Guidelines on Writing a Research Proposal
Guidelines on writing a research proposal
Introduction
This is a guide to writing M.A. research proposals. The same principles apply to dissertation
proposals and to proposals to most funding agencies. It includes a model outline, but advisor,
committee and funding agency expectations vary and your proposal will be a variation on this basic
theme. Use these guidelines as a point of departure for discussions with your advisor. They may
serve as a straw–man against which to build your understanding of both your project and of proposal
writing.
For USM students, the same rules apply as for proposals everywhere in the world.

One problem with this type of research is that you might find the perfect succinct answer to your
question on the night before (or after) you turn in the final draft ––– in someone else's work. This
certainly can knock the wind out of your sails. (But note that even a straight–ahead science thesis
can have the problem of late in the game discovering that the work you have done or are doing has
already been done, this is where familiarity with the relevant literature by both yourself and your
committee members is important.)
A Couple of Models for Proposals
A Two Page (Preliminary Proposal) Model
Here is a model for a very brief (maybe five paragraph) proposal that you might use to interest
faculty in sitting on your committee. People who are not yet hooked may especially appreciate its
brevity.
In the first paragraph, the first sentence identifies the general topic area. The second sentence gives
the research question, and the third sentence establishes its significance.
The next couple of paragraphs gives the larger historical perspective on the topic. Essentially list the
major schools of thought on the topic and very briefly review the literature in the area with its major
findings. Who has written on the topic and what have they found? Allocate about a sentence per
important person or finding. Include any preliminary

Module 2 # 7
One of the five theoretical perspectives mention is the Conflict Theory. The main ideas of this
theory are conflict underlies all social relations because of injustice in society. Social change is
desirable, especially when it can lead to greater equality: the powerful who are the haves impose
their values and belief on the haves not's. This is influenced by critical sociology One of the
examples that come to mind is The American civil rights movement. In history African American
have been treated so harsh from being kidnap from their homeland to being stereotype for walking
down the street with a hood on. For many years African American did not receive the same amount
of privileges because of the color of their skin. They were not able to go where they wanted when
they wanted. They were not able to vote, go to the same restrooms. All they want was the same
rights as everyone else. They were beaten, murderer jailed, hosed with water just to be treated the
same. Every time there was progress, there was a new problem that stops the African Americans
from being treated with the same level of respect as everyone else. They went from being kidnap

the Central Bank of Russia in devaluation of the Ruble and the Russian default of 1998 along with
its involvement in the crisis management process. This research required me to learn theories
ranging from Paul Krugman's "Balance of Payment Crises" to recent models of monetary policies

Nursing has been striving to become a research based profession since the Briggs Report (1972) and
the lack of apparent integration of research findings into nursing practice has been lamented
consistently ever since (Walsh and Ford, 1989). As long ago as 1989 the Department of Health
(DoH), in their Strategy for Nursing stated; 'All clinical practice should be founded on up–to–date
information and research findings.
Practitioners should be encouraged to identify the needs and opportunities for research presented by
their work. Research is fundamental to achieving evidence–based practice in nursing. Evidence–
based health care aims to promote clinical and cost–effective care/treatment through the explicit,
conscientious, and judicious use of the currently available best evidence from research to guide
decisions (Sackett et al, 1996).
Recently, there has been an increasing emphasis on evidence–based practice. The NHS information

to the NHS commitment of bringing research evidence closer to clinical decision makers

Late Adulthood Observation: Doris Essay
For this observation assignment I chose to observe Doris. Doris is a seventy–six year old volunteer
at the day care I work at. I have been observing Doris over a course of ten weeks and have spoken
with her on many occasions. Doris lost her husband fourteen years ago after a short illness. The
anniversary of his passing is coming up within a few days of Thanksgiving. When we began
speaking of him, I observed the change in Doris' demeanor. She is still grieving over this loss.
Her three children are grown and married with children of their own. They all live a distance from
her. Two daughters live in Colorado and one son lives in New Jersey. Doris recently underwent
surgery on her arm and both daughters came to help her during her ... Show more content on

Late adulthood in Erikson's life stage theory is the difference between in integrity versus despair.
(Ashford & Lecroy, 2013, p. 99) Doris has found her life to be very satisfying. The only thing she
wishes could have been changed is the passing of her husband so early. She is content and proud of
the way her children have turned out and where her life is currently. We have talked much about
how things were as she raised her children and even that of when she was a child. Cappeliez calls
this the reminiscence bump, the ability to recall memories from adolescence through young
adulthood. (2008, p. 1) She appreciates the life she has been fortunate to have and enjoys sharing the
memories she has. I observed the way her face lit up as we talked about her as a child and her
children. Another area of observation is the effect of losing her spouse. Many of our volunteers have
lost a spouse prior to coming and volunteering at the day care. There are many benefits to
volunteering for the late adulthood individual who has experienced a loss of their spouse. According
to Li some of the benefits include: a positive impact on well–being, social support and interactions,
reduces stress, and promotes healthy behaviors. (2007, p. 2) Death of a long time spouse can have
the opposite affect if left to grieve and mourn on their own without a support system. According to
Li, "Older bereaved persons face many physical and psychological

Studying Art Education On Hong Kong Essay
First off, let me introduce myself a little bit. I am Veronica. I born in Dallas Texas and raised in
Hong Kong. I come from a small Asian family I live with my parent and one little brother in an
appartment. I came to US when I was 18 to continue my study. I spent most of my childhood in
Hong Kong. I 've been to many parts of the rest of China such as Beijing, Sichuan, and Guizhou. I
was able to explore local high school life and I had the opportunity to see the recovery of places
after serious earthquakes. Of course, I 've also spent many years in the United States to study. I am
studying Art Education K–12 and minoring in English. My native language is Cantonese. I studied
both Mandarin and English in kindergarten on. I am fluent in all three languages.
Racial, ethnic, cultural background
My cousin was born in the US and through him, I was able to experience a taste of American
culture. As an international student who lived in Hong Kong, I 've had exposure to Hong Kongese,
American, Taiwanese, Japanese, Saudi Arabian, and other cultures. In particular, I 've made many
Taiwanese friends over the years who helped me to perfect my Mandarin as well as teach me further
on moral education and cooking.
On the other hand, My peer group can be generally defined as my peers also involved in a higher
education (especially from Snow College and BYU). In particular, the peers who have most inspired

The Strength of Competitive Analysis
OUTLINE
INTRODUCTION:
Competition Theories Compete
It is never doubted by academic circles and business environments that the strength of competitive
analysis, if not the top, is one of the most important critical success factors in creating and managing
marketing strategies. The way a business adapts to competitive environments, characteristic of its
focus being self–centered, competitor–centered, customer–driven or market driven (Day and
Nebugandi, 1994), will define its place in the complex marketing arena.
However, different theories of competition seem to compete in offering better explanations for key
macro and micro phenomena. In this paper, we attempt to review the different perspectives on The

Thus, firms observe competitive advantages and disadvantages, where the parity state belonging to
static command markets are never observed.
As seen in Figure 1, CATC suggests that, firms have to manage and optimize resources, tangible and
intangible, in order to gain comparative advantage over their competitors. Comparative advantage
provides the firms to gain market positions that
possess competitive advantage which will aid the firms in reaching their absolute goal: superior
financial performance. The arrows depict a continuous marketing management process that fit with
the dynamic nature of CATC competition.
A COMPARISON:
CATC & Neoclassical Theory of Perfect Competition (NTPC)
One might summarize that CATC differentiates itself from the classical view by the following four
qualifiers: innovative, bountiful, high quality and rich diversity. Table 1 illustrates the differences
between the two theories according to ten major variables. The only similarities between CATC and
NTPC are that they both accept the firms as input combiners and humans as motivated by self–
interest. (Deligönül and Çavuþgil, 1997)
As the neoclassical theory translates as perfect competition with homogeneous firms, resources,
consumer preferences and products, the firms' objective is to maximize profit and the role of
management is to only implement the production function. In this static market, the resources are

A Short History of Nearly Everything
A Short History of Nearly Everything is a popular science book by American author Bill Bryson that
explains some areas of science, using a style of language which aims to be more accessible to the
general public than many other books dedicated to the subject. It was one of the bestselling popular
science books of 2005 in the UK, selling over 300,000 copies.[1]
instead describing general sciences such as chemistry, paleontology, astronomy, and particle physics.
In it, he explores time from the Big Bang to the discovery of quantum mechanics, via evolution and
geology.
Bryson tells the story of science through the stories of the people who made the discoveries, such as
Edwin Hubble, Isaac Newton, and Albert Einstein.

Just like the alchemists of old, scientists have a regrettable tendency to "vaile their secrets with
mistie speech". Science, John Keats sulked, "will clip an Angel 's wings, / Conquer all mysteries by
rule and line." Bryson turns this on its head by blaming the messenger rather than the message.
Robbing nature of its mystery is what he thinks most science books do best. But, unlike Keats, he
doesn 't believe that this is at all necessary. We may be living in societies less ready to believe in
magic, miracles or afterlives, but the sublime remains. Rather as Richard Dawkins has argued,
Bryson insists that the results of scientific study can be wondrous and very often are so. The trick is
to write about them in a way that makes them comprehensible without crushing nature 's mystique.
Bryson provides a lesson in how it should be done. The prose is just as one would expect –
energetic, quirky, familiar and humorous. Bryson 's great skill is that of lightly holding the reader 's
hand throughout; building up such trust that topics as recondite as atomic weights, relativity and
particle physics are shorn of their terrors.
The amount of ground covered is truly impressive. From the furthest reaches of cosmology, we
range through time and space until we are looking at the smallest particles. We explore our own
planet and get to grips with the ideas, first of Newton and then of Einstein, that allow us

The Process Of Conducting Research
Procedure
The process of conducting research is to gather information that relates to your I– search question.
The I– search question that I am seeking answers to happens to be; what is the definition of family
in today's society? There are many methods of investigation that can be used to answer this
question, but I have limited it to eight methods. The eight methods I have chosen are going to give
me in depth information about my purposed I search question.
The first method of investigation for my I– search project that would best help me gather
information for my project is interviewing both in person and by email. The interview process is
beneficial to my project because it gives me in depth and comprehensive information. The
interviews will consist of ordinary people in todays, society both younger and older the young will
be aged from four to thirty and old will consist of anyone over thirty. I am doing the interviews to
gain answers to my secondary questions which are based on gender and age. Also interviews
provide personal experiences and better understanding of the subject matter in this case family.
The second method of investigation will be scholarly journals. I am using journals because family is
a big topic to be covered and it has been discussed and written about over many years. Many
psychologists have written about what defines a family and how it has changed over time. These
Journals will help me show that the definition is outdated and how it should be

Argument For Coolmini
CONSENT FOR ZELTIQ COOLMINI®
CoolMini® is a cryolipolytic process used in adults to treat visible fat and affect the appearance of
lax tissue under the chin (submental area). CoolMini® procedure uses a non–invasive vacuum
applicator to draw in tissue and deliver controlled cooling at the surface of the skin to target and kill
fat cells. Then, the body eliminates dead cells over a period of weeks. This improves appearance by
helping you lose unwanted fat in your face and neck. Desired results may take more than one
treatment. The results are long–term but vary by individual. Submental fat bulges and laxity are

How Subliminal Messaging Affects Consumer Behavior
How Subliminal Messaging Affects Consumer Behavior
The subject of subliminal messaging in relation to consumer behavior presents an interesting
dichotomy between the scientific community and the general public. The purpose of this paper is to
discover what, if any, effect subliminal messaging has on consumer behavior, as well as shed light
on the differing positions regarding this controversial subject, and provide a brief historical
background on the material.
Before the topic of subliminal messaging can be addressed, one must first understand subliminal
perception. Subliminal perception is defined as "the processing of stimuli presented below the level
of the consumer's awareness." (Solomon, p.629) Subliminal messaging is ... Show more content on

The statements made by Keys in concert with the findings of Vicary would appear to paint a very
clear picture of subversive forces at work compelling the consumer to make purchasing decisions
that are driven by inexplicable urges outside of their conscious realm. The scientific facts, however,
indicate that much of the positions of Keys and Vicary are, at best, hyperbole. The president of the
Psychological Corporation, Dr. Henry Link challenged Vicary to reproduce his findings in another
study, but Vicary was not able to do this. (Adams) Since Vicary made his claims about projected
messages, his claims have failed to stand up to scientific scrutiny. Research has shown that strong
stimuli yields strong response, and the weaker stimuli produce the weakest responses. (Rogers, p.
15) Furthermore, Vicary admitted in 1962 interview with Advertiser Age magazine that the entire
program had been nothing more than a gimmick. (Danzig) It is estimated that Vicary had made
millions of dollars from working as a consultant during his ‘research.' (Rogers, p. 15)
Dr. Key's positions were not above critical review from his peers as well. Jack Haberstroh took
Key's hypothesis to task in his book Ice Cube Sex when he states, "Subliminal advertising does not

We wanted to be able to communicate outside the classroom not just in the classroom. On our first

Finally, performing is the last topic in Tuckman's group formation; we are currently working on
collaborating our ideas into a presentation for our final group project. As for now, we are very
cooperative in working together to make it a very interesting and fun topic of choice because we feel
that there needs to be more studies out there. We split up the roles, and decided it would be best if
we include and spoke about parts of the research we did because some of us are more
knowledgeable in certain areas, as it is part of what we study. While for others, it's a topic of choice
because it is trending. As a group, we are working really well in getting together and putting our
ideas out onto the presentation because it is a topic we enjoy and a topic that is not spoken about,
but is very popular in our generation. Therefore, we have established certain criteria that we need to
follow. The criteria being that everyone understand the goals of our final presentation (ch11, pg

assess that is by a game at the end of the presentation (ch11, pg 273). We thought this solution to our
objective would be effective because it is entertaining and enjoyable. Before we thought about
coming up with a game, we thought about making a quiz at the beginning and end to assess the
knowledge of our classmates, but decided otherwise (ch 11, pg 274), we listed our the solutions in a

would financially benefit if the results of the study are favorable. Is this an example of a potential

would most likely be two groups involved in the experimental study: the control group and the

Francis Bacon and Rene Descartes
| Connections and Contrasts of Francis Bacon and Rene Descartes | | | |
The Discourse on the Method of Rightly Conducting One's Reason and of Seeking Truth in the
Sciences is one of the most influential works in the history of modern philosophy, and important to
the evolution of natural sciences. In this work, Descartes tackles the problem of skepticism.
Descartes modified it to account for a truth he found to be incontrovertible. Descartes started his line
of reasoning by doubting everything, so as to assess the world from a fresh perspective, clear of any
preconceived notions. Whereas Francis Bacon's Scientific Method wanted to replace the deductive
reasoning by inductive reasoning. The important concept in this reformed ... Show more content on

It is still practiced in some universities and will be practiced up until the 18th century at least. Three
fundamental changes have occurred during the Renaissance; Aristotle portrayed the understanding
of the universe, Galen described the importance of medicine and to understand astronomy Ptolemy
described it.
In 200 years there has been a revolutionary change, Rene Descartes and Isaac Newton have replaced
Ptolemy in astronomy. Galileo has replaced Aristotle in physics. Harvey has replaced Galen in
medicine. The three ancient authorities have been over thrown.
In Rene Descartes' Discourse on Method he expresses his disappointment with traditional
philosophy and with the limitations of theology; only logic, geometry and algebra hold his respect,
because of the utter certainty which they can offer us. Unfortunately, because they depend on
hypotheses, they cannot tell us what is real, i.e. what the world is really like. Therefore Descartes
suggests a method of thought combining the consistency of mathematics but based on natural truths
about what is real, basic knowledge which could not be wrong (like the axioms of geometry). He
calls into question everything that he thinks he has learned through his senses but rests his entire
system on the one truth that he cannot doubt, namely, the reality of his own mind and the radical
difference between the mental and the physical aspects of the world.
What is crucial to Descartes is

Essay on The Airport on Thanksgiving Eve
Thanksgiving holiday is one of the few holidays that we do not have in Thailand. I never understood
the significance of this holiday apart from its two–day school break until I traveled on Thanksgiving
eve this past holiday. A taxi driver who drove me to the airport hinted about its importance by saying
that, "Tonight is one of the busiest travel periods of the year." I did not completely comprehend his
claim until I saw how crowded the airport was. It seemed to me that everyone headed home to
celebrate Thanksgiving with his or her family. However, what was most amusing that night was a
scene of tens or even hundreds of people waiting for their family members at arrival gate. I was not

In addition, because of the different constraints between controlled environment in laboratories and
the real world, we cannot use experiments to answer the question. Therefore, ethnography is the
most suitable procedure to answer this question.
To conduct my ethnography, I observed people who waited for their family members at the airport
by sitting near the gate and watching their reactions. Without asking for their opinions or reasons
about their behaviors, I eliminated potential Hawthorne effects which is people changed their
actions once they realized that someone observed them. I paid attention to the number of people
waiting together to determine the relationship between the waiting and arriving people, their actions
while they waited and their reaction once they met their person. According to my observations,
people brought the whole family with them if the person they waited for was part of a family and
they were alone if the arrived person was one's boy/girlfriend. They had similar emotions such as
being tired and bored while they waited. No one had any positive facial expressions but they refused
to sit and wait in the back. Everyone wanted to be the first one to see the person to whom they
waited for. When the long awaited person arrived, their emotions changed dramatically. Everyone
had smiles on their faces and they started to hug

What Similarities and Differences Are There Between...
It is in our human nature to explain everything. Naturally, there are many ways of knowing.
Application of these, often defined by certain methodology, are frequently classified into areas of

attaining knowledge in different areas of knowledge. When the method forming scientific and
historical models for human understanding of the world are examined, many similarities can be
seen. These differences and similarities can also be seen when products of explanations are assessed.

The thesis comes from my own beliefs. For example, such thesis is claiming that differing
ideologies played a major role in the development of the Cold War. Most scholars like J. L. Gaddis

1940s. However, I can claim that ideology played a very important role in the development of the

War and present my evidence to support the argument. Unlike most science my explanation of
ideologies in the Cold War does no need to be accepted by the community. In history two or more
different explanations may exist and both would be valid. In science, most explanations are not

Its main objective is improving economic efficiency, especially labor productivity. It was one of the
earliest attempts to apply science to the engineering of processes and to management'' (3). He
believed this could greatly increase the effectiveness with which a company runs. ''To apply his
solution, Taylor created planning departments, staffed them with engineers, and gave them the
responsibility to:
1. Develop scientific methods for doing work.
2. Establish goals for productivity.
3. Establish systems of rewards for meeting the goals.
4. Train the personnel in how to use the methods and thereby meet the goals.''
In theory, providing the workers an insight into the goals set out by the company and providing them
a suitable and healthy environment along with teaching them the latest techniques could really help
a company to work its way towards its desired goals. The workers should be kept together as a
group and treated fairly with promotions and appreciation whenever the company does good in the
market. This could motivate the workers in putting more effort in reaching the goals that have been
set up by the company.

Essay on The New Archaeology Movement
With the evolution of available technologies and methodologies, some archaeologists became
frustrated with the traditional ways of archaeology; they felt that the new technologies should be
used to improve archaeology and the outcomes of professionals in the field. The New Archaeology
was a movement that sought to contribute to the existing anthropological knowledge of human
behavior by emerging as a science and separating itself from the historical approach. New
archaeology did not merely incorporate scientific technology, but it also employed various scientific
methods and approaches.
Lewis Binford was the most influential figure in New Archaeology; he considered that cultures were
composed of "three interrelated subsystems: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Culture cannot be treated as a process because, in doing so, one would not take into account the
many characteristics that distinguish cultures from each other and that would alter the outcome of
each civilization.
Furthermore, Binford believed that archaeology should contribute to explaining the significance of
past occurrences, instead of merely reconstructing them; consequently, he promoted the use of
"explicit theory" (Renfrew and Bahn 41). Archaeologists were to formulate a theory for an event
that had occurred in the past and would need to provide proof in the form of sites and artifacts to
prove that the event actually occurred. New Archaeology supported the notion of using theories to
explain the past. This would force archaeologists to provide proof for their conclusions, instead of
merely claiming that something is correct based on his authority in the field.
Additionally, this approach would change archaeological procedure to a scientific one: "the
appropriate procedure was now seen as formulating hypotheses, constructing models, and deducing
their consequences" (Renfrew and Bahn 41). Implementing a scientific method for archaeological
research would undermine some artifacts and other findings and regard them as unimportant. If
archaeologists were concerned with proving a hypothesis correct, they may overlook an artifact that
would not contribute to the hypothesis, but is still significant. New Archaeology promoted this idea;

Essay on Of Conspiracy Theories by Brian Keeley
Brian Keeley's short essay, "Of Conspiracy Theories" discusses conspiracy theories and their value
in an epistemological context. Keeley defines a conspiracy theory as "a proposed explanation of
some historical event (or events) in terms of the significant causal agency of a relatively small group
of persons–the conspirators–acting in secret (Keeley 1999, pg. 116)." Keeley seeks to answer the
question of why conspiracy theories are unwarranted. His interest in the warrant of conspiracy

He explains why UCTs are as popular as they are in modern society, and why people should
nevertheless disregard and approach them with caution. What Keeley refers to as "virtues" are the
reason for the popularity of UCTs. He gives the virtue of explanatory reach as the first and main
reason for UCTs popularity, which is the account of all knowledge including errant data. This is in
stark contrast to the received theory, which is imperfect by nature. This quality of UCTs is
particularly attractive because it appeals to human rationality by allowing for no loopholes. Keely
argues that errant data alone is not significant enough, and that a theory should never fit all of the
data. This leads into one of the main points, concerning falsifiability and skepticism. Unfalsifiability
is acceptable when the item or person under investigation is not actively trying to escape from the
investigator. Keeley contends that the problem is not the innate unfalsifiability, but rather the
increasing amount of skepticism required. Keely seeks a hole in the concept of conspiracy theories
that accounts for a person's innate sense that belief in a particular conspiracy theory is not justified.
In the case of the natural sciences, falsifiability is acceptable because of the rigorous protocols in
place, and therefore, we are warranted in believing scientific claims.
In section V, Keeley discusses the implication of the popularity of UCTs discussed in

Abstract
In this paper I have tried to explain the concept of positionality and its various parameters like emic
and etic, positivist, interpretivist, empiricist and rationalist, constructivist and reductionist. Then, I
tried to analyze my positionality on the basis of these points and how these will effect on the
research that I select and the methodologies that I choose. Society in which I grew up, religion,
beliefs, norms and values that I accepted, race, language, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

In other words, who I am determines, to a large extent, what I want to study.'
I am, as a researcher, a product of who I am as a person, and who I am as a person is a result of my
race, class, gender, and sexuality. I am the researcher I am because I have experienced life in a
certain manner. Additionally, what I believe about research cannot be separated from who I am
(Harding, 1987).
Mehra (2002) explains further –'A researcher's personal beliefs and values are reflected not only in
the choice of methodology and interpretation of findings, but also in the choice of a research topic.
In other words, what we believe in determines what we want to study.'
Positivism verses Interpretivism Approach:
"Interpretive research begins and ends with the biography and self of the researcher." (Denzin, 1989,
p.12). The positivist researcher is not affected by the subject of the research because he makes
generalizations. (Saunders, 2003 p. 83). When the investigator is a positivist, he tends to use
methods like experiments, surveys and field studies to generate data. In this approach, the
interviewer is more likely to be an outsider which means that the investigator does not have any
relation with the study group.
From the other point of view, interpretivism is about opinions, views and perceptions the people
experience in every day life. For example, people interpretation happens according to the situation
in which they experiences; which means the way

Edmund Feldman and Art Criticism Essay
Edmund Burke Feldman was an Alumni Foundation Distinguished University Professor of Art at the
University of Georgia. He was an art educator as well as an art historian. He has written several
books about art including The Philosophy of Art Education, First Edition, 1995. The primary focus
of this paper is to inform and show what Doctor Feldman thought was important to art teachers by
correlating the practices of teaching art to the issues of philosophy Doctor Feldman wanted to bring
together both subjects of art education and art teaching. He outlined the principle issues of art
education and provided art teachers with a way of creating goals for teaching art.
Dr. Feldman revealed that the approach to art education should be seen ... Show more content on

The third and fourth steps, however, begin to be more abstract and evaluative in nature. Instead of
technical, the conversation begins to move into the aesthetic considerations of the art. Obviously, it
is easier for an observer to complete the first two steps of the Feldman Method but it is necessary for
the observer to engage in the final two steps in order to garner the full meaning of the art, especially
as it affects him or her. The observer moves from seeing the art as an object "at a distance" to an
object "being engaged and attended to" in meaningful ways. If then an instructional leader begins to
describe teaching behaviors as art, one can observe that the same movement from concern about self
to concern about others also happens.
To put it differently, initially the conversation focuses on the technical dimensions and afterwards
addresses the aesthetic elements of the lesson. In the first two steps, the instructional supervisor
observes the lesson in its technical dimensions. The observer describes and analyzes the lesson and
these pieces are very important. In fact, without these two steps, and in particular learning outcomes
and classroom management, being successful it is premature to consider other parts of the lesson. If,
on the other hand, the supervisor describes and analyzes the lesson with a

Evaluation Research Design Literature
253 Chapter 6 Evaluation Research Design: Literature Reviews & Synthesis Frequently a research
question or hypothesis can be answered through secondary research, i.e., a literature review or
synthesis. Both strategies requires the researcher to mine existing data sources; ―pull out‖ relevant
data or information; summarize it; logically analyze and/or statistically treat it; and report results. In
many instances, the issue, problem, question, etc. which prompted the idea for an evaluation study is
resolved or answered by studying and reporting previous research reports in the literature or
synthesizing, either logically, statistically, or both, data drawn from existing databases. In program
evaluation, it is often necessary to describe or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
51). The meta–analytical approach advocated by Glass (1976) includes the aggregation of relevant
findings from empirical studies as summarized by the effect size, as well as an analysis of relevant
variables which may operate on the dependent and/or independent variables of each empirical study
included in the analysis. Suri describes advantages of the meta–analytic approach over the
traditional narrative review; these include: (1) identification of effects, (2) analysis of operating
moderating variables, (3) an explicit explanation and rationale for study inclusion criteria, and (4)
the methodological flexibility to include a large number of empirical studies. Suri reports that
criticisms include a tendency to over generalize findings, the potential to include poorly designed
empirical studies, overreliance on published juried research, and ignoring studies where effect size
isn't computed. D. Finally, Suri (2000) examines Slavin's (1986) best–evidence synthesis. 1. Slavin
(1986) asserts that best–evidence synthesis, "is designed to draw on the strengths of each approach
[traditional reviews and meta–analysis] and to avoid the pitfalls and characteristics of each‖ (pp. 5–
6). Slavin goes on to explain that best–evidence synthesis includes the "application of rational,
systematic methods of selecting studies to be included and use of effect size

Introduction The first time fingerprint comparison evidence was used in court against a defendant was in 1892 in Argentina [1] For purposes of forensic identification in cases of law enforcement and other areas where human identification is needed, fingerprints have been widely acclaimed to be of an invaluable importance and has therefore seen a close to unanimous acceptance as the gold standard of forensic evidence where biometric identity is concerned. Recently however, as was rarely done in times past, the scientific foundations of fingerprint expert testimonies in court are beginning to be challenged [2]. There are some commentators who now query the scientific validity of forensic fingerprint identification. Reference has been made to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These methods hopefully can be used to introduce some quantitative statistical measures to the fingerprint evidence. Before going into comparing both proposed statistical approaches, it would seem appropriate to take a brief look at the ACE–V method of fingerprint evidence analysis in the next section, to highlight areas where these proposed methods have advantages over it. 2. A brief description of the ACE–V Method In ACE–V, 'A' stands for Analysis, 'C' stands for Comparison, 'E' represents Evaluation and 'V' is for Verification. These are the various stages involved in the examination of fingerprint evidence by experts in the field before arriving at a conclusion on a set of prints which can be in any of these three conclusions viz: Exclusion, Individuation, or Inconclusive. 2.1 The Analysis stage This stage begins when the fingerprint expert examines a latent print and first makes a decision as to whether it contains details that are sufficient quantitatively and qualitatively to exceed the 'Value' threshold standard. If in his estimation the print does exceed the quality and quantity Value standard, then he continues with the analysis.[1] According to [4], most of the prints recovered from crime scenes are considered of no value. 2.2 The Comparison stage. The fingerprint expert for the first time looks at the suspect's 10 fingerprints (the exemplar ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Whether that is fact or theory, and the difference, Stephen Jay Gould explains in, "Evolution as Fact and Theory", which appeared in the May 1981 issue of Discover Magazine. Mr. Gould was described by the New York Times as, "one of the most influential evolutionary biologists of the 20th century" (Yoon). He wants to show how the creationist's have built their argument against evolution on sand, and the evolutionist's argument built on solid rock, as any paleontologist would prefer. It is a war of words, where their meaning, use and misuse, determine on which side you stand. His argument is not perfect, but using lack of perfection as evidence of evolution, he makes the case quite convincingly. It is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In contrast, Gould logically lays out three facts to buttress his evolution stance. He states, "... we have abundant, direct, observational evidence of evolution in action, from both the field and the laboratory" (440). The other two: the imperfection of nature, and transitions in the fossil record, "...rest upon inference", which is then explained to the reader (441). Up to this point, Gould's argument follows the path of logic, reason, and objectivity. However, as he picks apart the creationists argument, he ratchets up his emotions a notch or two. He readily confesses, "If I should sound sharp or bitter, indeed I am – for I have become a major target of these practices" (442). Justified or not, he seems to take personally, criticism of the theory, "punctuated equilibrium", which he and colleague Niles Eldredge developed. The tone is angry, but he uses direct quotes from his opponents to show how he has been misquoted and his message twisted, which infuriates him. Duane Gish wrote, "...according to Gould, a reptile laid an egg from which the first bird, feathers and all, was produced", which is just one example (443). The author manages largely, to reign in his anger, and he sounds almost conciliatory when admitting to the arrogance of the scientific community. Claiming to be mainly saddened by the sometimes–bitter feud with creationists, the impression is of someone who is tired. Tired of fighting a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Sellick: The Use Of Cricoid Pressure The use of the Sellick maneuver, better known as cricoid pressure, was first described by Monro in 1774 in the treatment of drowning victims but became more widely utilized after the method was introduced in a journal article in 1961 by Sellick. It has since become common practice in the anesthesia community, but has recently come under scrutiny in terms of its effectiveness and utility. I have had experience in its use but have not come to a definitive conclusion regarding its overall benefit. However, this was typically in scenarios with crews that I have been working with for years, and each practitioner present was comfortable in the stressful environment of a rapid sequence induction. Unfortunately, one person's experiences does little to prove or disprove what has been discussed. Considering the amount of recent literature dedicated to this topic and the polarizing nature of this practice necessitates a thorough evaluation of the method, and when and where it should be implemented. By definition, sense perception is whereby the idea of sense is referred to the external stimulus in which we perceive our knowledge through while perception is defined to be the awareness towards something through our senses. Long before we learned how to use language, reasoning, faith, or emotions, we have already been making use of our external stimuluses' to make sense or even be conscious of the world. This makes sense perception our primary source of obtaining knowledge since it is the only way for us to interact with the world around us. However, though it plays a requisite part for us in attaining knowledge, sense perception can both impede and limit our understanding of the world. In this essay, the strengths and weaknesses of ... These observations can range from the clothes the people in the community adorn, to the way in which they interact with one another. Without observing the community while being immersed in it, theories of communities or about their culture will never surface. While sense perception serves as our fundamental way of knowing, its strength of it being our predominant method of acquiring knowledge is its weakness as well. Due to the imperfection of our sensory organs, it generates inconsistent information gathered which subsequently affects the way we perceive knowledge. Selcting an Approach for a Qualitative Research Plan Essay Selecting an Approach for a Qualitative Research Plan Creswell (2013) contends that "we need to identify our approach to qualitative inquiry in order to present it as a sophisticated study, to offer it as a specific type so that reviewers can properly assess it, and...to offer some way of organizing ideas that can be grounded in the scholarly literature of qualitative research" (p. 69). Although I believe all three arguments cited by the author are important, this week's readings and discussion emphasized the third reason in particular. Indeed, reviewing the five approaches provided me with ideas regarding how to investigate and explore the topic. Through interviews and extensive data analysis the phenomenological study will aim to summarize "what the individuals have experienced and how they have experienced it" to arrive at the essence of the issue under investigation (Moustakas, 1994 as cited by Creswell, 2013, p. 79). Given the issue, transcendental phenomenology appears to be a desirable approach to gain a better understanding of the issue due to "bracketing" and its aim at perceiving a phenomenon new, fresh, and "for the first time" (Creswell, 2013, p. 80). Conducting a case study appears equally appropriate. Since case studies consist of "qualitative approaches in which the investigator explores a real–life, contemporary bounded system or multiple systems over time, through detailed, in–depth data collection involving multiple sources of information, and reports a case description and case themes" one could emphasize the changes in democratic participation as well as the motivators (Creswell, 2013, p. 97). Furthermore, case studies provide a wide array of approaches, including both quantitative and qualitative elements as well as explanatory, exploratory, and descriptive directions that could be used to investigate the proposed question (Creswell, 2013). Case selection would be purposeful, probably focusing on one to five NGOs engaging with the government to influence public policy and the people involved with the same. ... She used her observational and experimental proclivities from her medical background to develop, what we might today call, a Constructivist understanding of the process of learning. She studied them scientifically. If she saw some unusual behavior in a child, she would say,"I won't believe it now, I shall if it happens again". She studied the conditions in which the children would perform those actions. She thought education always involved three elements: The learner, the Prepared Environment, and the Trained Adult. It seems as though sexual strategies theory is different genders having different preferences when choosing a mate, in the case of long and short term relationships. The hypothesis at first was that both boys and girls felt that attractiveness was important. Girls would be more inclined to date someone because of social status and that boys would be the complete opposite. • 44. A Short History of Nearly Everything A Short History of Nearly Everything is a popular science book by American author Bill Bryson that explains some areas of science, using a style of language which aims to be more accessible to the general public than many other books dedicated to the subject. It was one of the bestselling popular science books of 2005 in the UK, selling over 300,000 copies.[1] instead describing general sciences such as chemistry, paleontology, astronomy, and particle physics. In it, he explores time from the Big Bang to the discovery of quantum mechanics, via evolution and geology. Bryson tells the story of science through the stories of the people who made the discoveries, such as Edwin Hubble, Isaac Newton, and Albert Einstein. Background Bill ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Just like the alchemists of old, scientists have a regrettable tendency to "vaile their secrets with mistie speech". Science, John Keats sulked, "will clip an Angel 's wings, / Conquer all mysteries by rule and line." Bryson turns this on its head by blaming the messenger rather than the message. Robbing nature of its mystery is what he thinks most science books do best. But, unlike Keats, he doesn 't believe that this is at all necessary. We may be living in societies less ready to believe in magic, miracles or afterlives, but the sublime remains. Rather as Richard Dawkins has argued, Bryson insists that the results of scientific study can be wondrous and very often are so. The trick is to write about them in a way that makes them comprehensible without crushing nature 's mystique. Bryson provides a lesson in how it should be done. The prose is just as one would expect – energetic, quirky, familiar and humorous. Bryson 's great skill is that of lightly holding the reader 's hand throughout; building up such trust that topics as recondite as atomic weights, relativity and particle physics are shorn of their terrors. The amount of ground covered is truly impressive. From the furthest reaches of cosmology, we range through time and space until we are looking at the smallest particles. The I– search question that I am seeking answers to happens to be; what is the definition of family in today's society? There are many methods of investigation that can be used to answer this question, but I have limited it to eight methods. The eight methods I have chosen are going to give me in depth information about my purposed I search question. The first method of investigation for my I– search project that would best help me gather information for my project is interviewing both in person and by email. The interview process is beneficial to my project because it gives me in depth and comprehensive information. The interviews will consist of ordinary people in todays, society both younger and older the young will be aged from four to thirty and old will consist of anyone over thirty. I am doing the interviews to gain answers to my secondary questions which are based on gender and age. Also interviews provide personal experiences and better understanding of the subject matter in this case family. The second method of investigation will be scholarly journals. I am using journals because family is a big topic to be covered and it has been discussed and written about over many years. Many psychologists have written about what defines a family and how it has changed over time. These Journals will help me show that the definition is outdated and how it should be ... CoolMini® procedure uses a non–invasive vacuum applicator to draw in tissue and deliver controlled cooling at the surface of the skin to target and kill fat cells. Then, the body eliminates dead cells over a period of weeks. This improves appearance by helping you lose unwanted fat in your face and neck. Desired results may take more than one treatment. How Subliminal Messaging Affects Consumer Behavior How Subliminal Messaging Affects Consumer Behavior The subject of subliminal messaging in relation to consumer behavior presents an interesting dichotomy between the scientific community and the general public. The purpose of this paper is to discover what, if any, effect subliminal messaging has on consumer behavior, as well as shed light on the differing positions regarding this controversial subject, and provide a brief historical background on the material. Before the topic of subliminal messaging can be addressed, one must first understand subliminal perception. Subliminal perception is defined as "the processing of stimuli presented below the level of the consumer's awareness." (Solomon, p.629) Subliminal messaging is ... The statements made by Keys in concert with the findings of Vicary would appear to paint a very clear picture of subversive forces at work compelling the consumer to make purchasing decisions that are driven by inexplicable urges outside of their conscious realm. The scientific facts, however, indicate that much of the positions of Keys and Vicary are, at best, hyperbole. The president of the Psychological Corporation, Dr. Henry Link challenged Vicary to reproduce his findings in another study, but Vicary was not able to do this. (Adams) Since Vicary made his claims about projected messages, his claims have failed to stand up to scientific scrutiny. Research has shown that strong stimuli yields strong response, and the weaker stimuli produce the weakest responses. (Rogers, p. 15) Furthermore, Vicary admitted in 1962 interview with Advertiser Age magazine that the entire program had been nothing more than a gimmick. (Danzig) It is estimated that Vicary had made millions of dollars from working as a consultant during his ‘research.' (Rogers, p. 15) Dr. Key's positions were not above critical review from his peers as well. Francis Bacon and Rene Descartes | Connections and Contrasts of Francis Bacon and Rene Descartes | | | | The Discourse on the Method of Rightly Conducting One's Reason and of Seeking Truth in the Sciences is one of the most influential works in the history of modern philosophy, and important to the evolution of natural sciences. In this work, Descartes tackles the problem of skepticism. Descartes modified it to account for a truth he found to be incontrovertible. Descartes started his line of reasoning by doubting everything, so as to assess the world from a fresh perspective, clear of any preconceived notions. It is still practiced in some universities and will be practiced up until the 18th century at least. Three fundamental changes have occurred during the Renaissance; Aristotle portrayed the understanding of the universe, Galen described the importance of medicine and to understand astronomy Ptolemy described it. In 200 years there has been a revolutionary change, Rene Descartes and Isaac Newton have replaced Ptolemy in astronomy. Galileo has replaced Aristotle in physics. Harvey has replaced Galen in medicine. The three ancient authorities have been over thrown. In Rene Descartes' Discourse on Method he expresses his disappointment with traditional philosophy and with the limitations of theology; only logic, geometry and algebra hold his respect, because of the utter certainty which they can offer us. Unfortunately, because they depend on hypotheses, they cannot tell us what is real, i.e. what the world is really like. Therefore Descartes suggests a method of thought combining the consistency of mathematics but based on natural truths about what is real, basic knowledge which could not be wrong (like the axioms of geometry). He calls into question everything that he thinks he has learned through his senses but rests his entire system on the one truth that he cannot doubt, namely, the reality of his own mind and the radical difference between the mental and the physical aspects of the world. Without asking for their opinions or reasons about their behaviors, I eliminated potential Hawthorne effects which is people changed their actions once they realized that someone observed them. I paid attention to the number of people waiting together to determine the relationship between the waiting and arriving people, their actions while they waited and their reaction once they met their person. According to my observations, people brought the whole family with them if the person they waited for was part of a family and they were alone if the arrived person was one's boy/girlfriend. They had similar emotions such as being tired and bored while they waited. No one had any positive facial expressions but they refused to sit and wait in the back. However, I can claim that ideology played a very important role in the development of the Cold War and present my evidence to support the argument. Unlike most science my explanation of ideologies in the Cold War does no need to be accepted by the community. In history two or more different explanations may exist and both would be valid. In science, most explanations are not regarded as valid unless the majority of the scientific community accept the explanation. Essay on The New Archaeology Movement With the evolution of available technologies and methodologies, some archaeologists became frustrated with the traditional ways of archaeology; they felt that the new technologies should be used to improve archaeology and the outcomes of professionals in the field. The New Archaeology was a movement that sought to contribute to the existing anthropological knowledge of human behavior by emerging as a science and separating itself from the historical approach. New archaeology did not merely incorporate scientific technology, but it also employed various scientific methods and approaches. Lewis Binford was the most influential figure in New Archaeology; he considered that cultures were composed of "three interrelated subsystems: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Culture cannot be treated as a process because, in doing so, one would not take into account the many characteristics that distinguish cultures from each other and that would alter the outcome of each civilization. Furthermore, Binford believed that archaeology should contribute to explaining the significance of past occurrences, instead of merely reconstructing them; consequently, he promoted the use of "explicit theory" (Renfrew and Bahn 41). Archaeologists were to formulate a theory for an event that had occurred in the past and would need to provide proof in the form of sites and artifacts to prove that the event actually occurred. New Archaeology supported the notion of using theories to explain the past. This would force archaeologists to provide proof for their conclusions, instead of merely claiming that something is correct based on his authority in the field. Additionally, this approach would change archaeological procedure to a scientific one: "the appropriate procedure was now seen as formulating hypotheses, constructing models, and deducing their consequences" (Renfrew and Bahn 41). Implementing a scientific method for archaeological research would undermine some artifacts and other findings and regard them as unimportant. If archaeologists were concerned with proving a hypothesis correct, they may overlook an artifact that would not contribute to the hypothesis, but is still significant. Keeley defines a conspiracy theory as "a proposed explanation of some historical event (or events) in terms of the significant causal agency of a relatively small group of persons–the conspirators–acting in secret (Keeley 1999, pg. 116)." Keeley seeks to answer the question of why conspiracy theories are unwarranted. He explains why UCTs are as popular as they are in modern society, and why people should nevertheless disregard and approach them with caution. What Keeley refers to as "virtues" are the reason for the popularity of UCTs. He gives the virtue of explanatory reach as the first and main reason for UCTs popularity, which is the account of all knowledge including errant data. This is in stark contrast to the received theory, which is imperfect by nature. This quality of UCTs is particularly attractive because it appeals to human rationality by allowing for no loopholes. Keely argues that errant data alone is not significant enough, and that a theory should never fit all of the data. This leads into one of the main points, concerning falsifiability and skepticism. Unfalsifiability is acceptable when the item or person under investigation is not actively trying to escape from the investigator. Keeley contends that the problem is not the innate unfalsifiability, but rather the increasing amount of skepticism required. Keely seeks a hole in the concept of conspiracy theories that accounts for a person's innate sense that belief in a particular conspiracy theory is not justified. In the case of the natural sciences, falsifiability is acceptable because of the rigorous protocols in place, and therefore, we are warranted in believing scientific claims. • 83. Edmund Feldman and Art Criticism Essay Edmund Burke Feldman was an Alumni Foundation Distinguished University Professor of Art at the University of Georgia. He was an art educator as well as an art historian. He has written several books about art including The Philosophy of Art Education, First Edition, 1995. The primary focus of this paper is to inform and show what Doctor Feldman thought was important to art teachers by correlating the practices of teaching art to the issues of philosophy Doctor Feldman wanted to bring together both subjects of art education and art teaching. He outlined the principle issues of art education and provided art teachers with a way of creating goals for teaching art. Dr. Feldman revealed that the approach to art education should be seen ... Instead of technical, the conversation begins to move into the aesthetic considerations of the art. Obviously, it is easier for an observer to complete the first two steps of the Feldman Method but it is necessary for the observer to engage in the final two steps in order to garner the full meaning of the art, especially as it affects him or her. The observer moves from seeing the art as an object "at a distance" to an object "being engaged and attended to" in meaningful ways. If then an instructional leader begins to describe teaching behaviors as art, one can observe that the same movement from concern about self to concern about others also happens. To put it differently, initially the conversation focuses on the technical dimensions and afterwards addresses the aesthetic elements of the lesson. In the first two steps, the instructional supervisor observes the lesson in its technical dimensions. The observer describes and analyzes the lesson and these pieces are very important. In fact, without these two steps, and in particular learning outcomes and classroom management, being successful it is premature to consider other parts of the lesson. If, on the other hand, the supervisor describes and analyzes the lesson with a His four–step, (description, analysis, interpretation, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 85. Evaluation Research Design Literature 253 Chapter 6 Evaluation Research Design: Literature Reviews & Synthesis Frequently a research question or hypothesis can be answered through secondary research, i.e., a literature review or synthesis. Both strategies requires the researcher to mine existing data sources; ―pull out‖ relevant data or information; summarize it; logically analyze and/or statistically treat it; and report results. In many instances, the issue, problem, question, etc. which prompted the idea for an evaluation study is resolved or answered by studying and reporting previous research reports in the literature or synthesizing, either logically, statistically, or both, data drawn from existing databases. In program evaluation, it is often necessary to describe or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 51). The meta–analytical approach advocated by Glass (1976) includes the aggregation of relevant findings from empirical studies as summarized by the effect size, as well as an analysis of relevant variables which may operate on the dependent and/or independent variables of each empirical study included in the analysis. Suri describes advantages of the meta–analytic approach over the traditional narrative review; these include: (1) identification of effects, (2) analysis of operating moderating variables, (3) an explicit explanation and rationale for study inclusion criteria, and (4) the methodological flexibility to include a large number of empirical studies. Suri reports that criticisms include a tendency to over generalize findings, the potential to include poorly designed empirical studies, overreliance on published juried research, and ignoring studies where effect size isn't computed. D. Finally, Suri (2000) examines Slavin's (1986) best–evidence synthesis. 1. Slavin (1986) asserts that best–evidence synthesis, "is designed to draw on the strengths of each approach [traditional reviews and meta–analysis] and to avoid the pitfalls and characteristics of each‖ (pp. 5– 6). Slavin goes on to explain that best–evidence synthesis includes the "application of rational, systematic methods of selecting studies to be included and use of effect size ...
