10/7/20 Welcome Mackenzie
Please welcome the newest members of our YVC Team, Mackenzie Fraser. She joins us as our new
Academic Advisor. Mackenzie graduated from Linfield College with a B.A. in English Literature, Spanish and
Gender Studies and has kept finding excuses to stick around McMinnville ever since. She is bilingual in
English and Spanish, and spent some time living and working abroad as an ESOL teacher in Costa Rica. She
also comes to us with experience working as a bilingual advisor, and she has many connections through-out
the Yamhill County. In her free time, she likes playing tennis or pickleball at the city park courts, hiking with
friends and family, or wine tasting in the beautiful Dundee Hills. We are so excited to have her join our team.
Please make her feel welcome!

10/8/20 - Lab kits going out
Renae, YVC Science Lab Manager, has worked tirelessly last week and this to put together the Lab
Kits for Geology and Biology students. Yesterday was her final mailing day- 3 trips to the post office,
much $ spent on postage, a few annoyed looks from post office clerks and patrons, and lot's of sweat
LOL…. but all GEO 142 and BIO 101/102 students will be getting their kits this week! Way to go,
Renae!!

Oct. 22 - Now THIS is #remotelearning!!
Many of our staff members are attending an Implicit Bias workshop this morning. Our Anthropology instructor,
Keely Baca, is presenting with Vivi (Diversity & Equity and Title IX Officer) about implicit bias from an
anthropological perspective, to help us develop greater understanding of implicit bias and identifying steps to
begin to reframe our unconscious reactions in order to address our bias.
The great thing about #remotelearning is that you can #takeitontheroad and #nevermissamoment of your

Nov. 30 - The secret to success
The best thing you can do for yourself is to get organized and create a great routine for getting all
your school work done and other things done. If you haven’t already done it, over the Christmas
break, get a planner and pencil out all of your class times, homework assignments, work time, and
personal time for winter term, and then STICK TO THE PLAN! You will be so much more relaxed than
if you are just trying to wing it and cram everything in at the last minute.

take all the classes they can from her, and develop a love for all things geology in the process! Watch
her video and learn a little bit about Shannon. And if you want to take her classes winter term, she is

Dec. 10 - Human Rights Day
December 10th is #humanrightsday.
Human Rights Day on December 10th annually seeks to honor the adoption of the Universal Declaration of
Human Rights (UDHR).
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) is a milestone document in the history of human rights.
Drafted by representatives with different legal and cultural backgrounds from all regions of the world, the
Declaration was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in Paris on 10 December 1948 as a
common standard of achievements for all peoples and all nations. It sets out, for the first time, fundamental
human rights to be universally protected and it has been translated into over 500 languages.
https://www.un.org/en/universal-declaration-human-rights/
Article 1 of the UDHR says “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are
endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.”
You can read or download the entire UDHR at un.org.
Chemeketa places the highest priority on this value in our daily work. Our diversity statement reads:
“We are a college community enriched by the diversity of our students, staff, and community members. Each
individual and group has the potential to contribute in our learning environment. Each has dignity. To diminish
the dignity of one is to diminish the dignity of us all”
