A waveguide is an electromagnetic feed line used in
microwave communications, broadcasting, and radar
installations. Waveguide consists of a rectangular or
cylindrical metal tube or pipe. Waveguides are often
used at microwave. There are most often used with
horn antenna and dish antenna.

Any shape of cross section of a waveguide can support
electromagnetic waves of which rectangular and
circular waveguides have become more common. A
waveguide having rectangular cross section is known as
Rectangular waveguide.
A Hollow metallic tube of uniform circular cross section
for transmitting electromagnetic waves by successive
reflections from the inner walls of the tube is called
Circular waveguide.
Main application are:
Suitable for long distance waveguide transmission
above 10 GHz.
Horn antenna
Dish antenna
To reduce attenuation loss.
Act as an High-Pass filter.
Short and medium distance broad band
communication.
It is completely shielded.
It can transmit extremely high peak powers.
It has very low loss, which is negligible at
microwave frequencies.
It is expensive as the materials used to construct wave
guides are usually Copper And Silver.
It is not possible to pass DC along with Radio Frequency
(RF) signal.
It’s size and mass.
