Networking is a term that subsumes various technologies and protocols for transferring data from one place to another by means of a transmission network.
While every technology like TCP/IP, Ethernet, SDH, GSM, VSAT etc. has its own zoo of terms and acronyms, there are more fundamental concepts and terms common to the different technologies and protocols.
The goal of this document is to explain the gist of the these more common networking terms and concepts. These explanations complement typical glossaries with illustrations.
Overview of the Domain Name System (DNS).
In the early days of the Internet, hosts had a fixed IP address.
Reaching a host required to know its numeric IP address.
With the growing number of hosts this scheme became quickly awkward and difficult to use.
DNS was introduced to give hosts human readable names that would be translated into a numeric IP addresses on the fly when a requesting host tried to reach another host.
To facilitate a distributed administration of the domain names, a hierarchic scheme was introduced where responsibility to manage domain names is delegated to organizations which can further delegate management of sub-domains.
Due to its importance in the operation of the Internet, domain name servers are usually operated redundantly. The databases of both servers are periodically synchronized.

Rethinking publishing in the content marketing eraMatthew Buckland
The internet has instigated a dramatic fall in the economics of media. Competition for both revenue & reader attention. Media & advertisers need to figure out a new paradigm: platforms, ad formats, content types, distribution & business models

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

LF Energy Webinar: Electrical Grid Modelling and Simulation Through PowSyBl -...DanBrown980551
Do you want to learn how to model and simulate an electrical network from scratch in under an hour?
Then welcome to this PowSyBl workshop, hosted by Rte, the French Transmission System Operator (TSO)!
During the webinar, you will discover the PowSyBl ecosystem as well as handle and study an electrical network through an interactive Python notebook.
PowSyBl is an open source project hosted by LF Energy, which offers a comprehensive set of features for electrical grid modelling and simulation. Among other advanced features, PowSyBl provides:
- A fully editable and extendable library for grid component modelling;
- Visualization tools to display your network;
- Grid simulation tools, such as power flows, security analyses (with or without remedial actions) and sensitivity analyses;
The framework is mostly written in Java, with a Python binding so that Python developers can access PowSyBl functionalities as well.
What you will learn during the webinar:
- For beginners: discover PowSyBl's functionalities through a quick general presentation and the notebook, without needing any expert coding skills;
- For advanced developers: master the skills to efficiently apply PowSyBl functionalities to your real-world scenarios.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
Speakers:
Bob Boule
Robert Boule is a technology enthusiast with PASSION for technology and making things work along with a knack for helping others understand how things work. He comes with around 20 years of solution engineering experience in application security, software continuous delivery, and SaaS platforms. He is known for his dynamic presentations in CI/CD and application security integrated in software delivery lifecycle.
Gopinath Rebala
Gopinath Rebala is the CTO of OpsMx, where he has overall responsibility for the machine learning and data processing architectures for Secure Software Delivery. Gopi also has a strong connection with our customers, leading design and architecture for strategic implementations. Gopi is a frequent speaker and well-known leader in continuous delivery and integrating security into software delivery.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

6. Hold up your phone against a person you’ve just met or passing by and instantly have information returned about that person within seconds, gleaned from an automatic web, public profile and social network search. Discover common friends, talking points — and then have the ability to add him/her to your network.
7. Using a semantic scan, you’d discover negative or positive comments on Google or elsewhere relating to the person in front of you. (Don’t mention that job at Microsoft or that time in Europe!) It would be instant insight into the guy standing right in front of you.
8.
9. Tapping into public databases and directories, discover who lives where and if and how you are connected — then call them, email them, add them to your network right then and there. Get other news about the suburb and other socio-economic information. If they’re part of your network, what are they saying about their suburb or the best pizza joint in the area?
10.
11. Hold up your phone in a crowded room and work out who is connected to whom. Instantly gauge your primary and secondary networks and work out who you should chat to, what the conversation points are — and who you should avoid. Where are the cliques? Who’s an outsider? What’s the buzz? ...we’ll never forget a name again.
12. Goodbye to privacy? We’re still working out the ethical and moral framework around this. We may see a backlash from society, angry at the intrusion. We may evolve into a society that’s highly transparent and accountable. But then again, we could become a paranoid and distrustful society, worrying about what our friends or neighbours will find out about us.
13. It’s comforting that: 1) everyone will mostly be in the same boat; 2) to some extent you’re in control by limiting your profile information on most social networks and, failing that, the “delete” button looms large... ...but then again there’s always going to be information outside our control...
