1. Mystery/Adventure Novel Project
Your Novel Project is worth 100 points. How you get those 100 points is going to be up to you.
Below you will find different tasks to complete relating to your novel. Each task is assigned a
starting point value. If you do the task and do it well you can earn those points. If you do the
task but do not pull all your effort into it you may not earn all of the points. The goal is to com-
plete enough tasks to earn 100 points.
Project Timeline:
November 10th: project assigned
November 12th, 16th & 18th: project work time in class
November 19th: project due!
• Please note that you will only have 3 scheduled work periods for this project. Any work that
you cannot complete during these in class work times must be finished for homework
• All written work must be in pen (or typed), neat, organized, free from spelling and grammar
errors.
• All artwork must be neat, done on white drawing paper and colored neatly
5 Point Tasks
Write and then present a 60 second speech selling the book to the class
Create a newspaper article or television story on your book.
Create 3 scenes from the book, label them (must be in color)
If you could give any character in the novel a present to help them in the story, what would
you give them and why? Explain using details from the story how this would help the
character. Must be in pen, or typed, neat, organized, at least 5 sentences.
15 Point Tasks
Compose 7 questions to ask a main character in the book; you’ll also need to write the
characters response to each question.
Write an obituary for one of the characters. (7 sentence minimum)
Draw a comic strip of your favorite scene (4 box minimum)
Write a letter to the author explaining your thoughts about the novel. What you liked, what
you did not like and how you connected to the characters in the novel (10 sentence min)
Create a bookmark that illustrates the story. On the back of the bookmark, pick 5 words
that describe the novel and write a short reason you chose each word. Make sure the title
and author are on the bookmark
10 Point Tasks
Describe the setting of a scene, and then act it out for the class in pantomime
Write a letter (10 sentence minimum) to the main character of the book asking questions,
protesting a situation and/or making a complaint/suggestion. This must be done using
correct letter format.
Create a new character to add to the novel. Describe this character and tell what role
they would play in the novel in full detail giving examples from the novel where they would
be added or make an impact.
2. 20 Point Tasks
Do a monologue. Pretend to be a character from the book. Tell the story. You can do this
aloud or on paper. If you pick someone other than the main character, you may find that
the story looks different from their eyes than it does to the main character.
Invite one of the characters to dinner, plan an imaginary conversation with the person you
invited. What will you serve and why? (12 sentence min)
Make a travel brochure advertising the setting of the story
25 Point Tasks
Make a map of where the event in the book take place, include descriptions for each map
location
Create a collage using magazine pictures and words that describe your novel. Fill the
space well. Write a brief explanation of your collage
Suddenly the book becomes a best seller. Write a letter to a movie producer trying to get
that person interested in making your book into a movie. Explain why the story, charac-
ters, conflicts etc would make a good film. Suggest a filming location and the actors to
play various roles. If your book is already a movie, you must choose different locations,
reasons, actors etc.
30 Point Tasks
Create a picture book version of the story that would appeal to younger students.
Write a new ending for the story, or add an extra chapter. Remember to use a similar style
of writing as the author, and be sure the new ending makes sense with the rest of the
story
Write and perform an original song that tells the story of the book
Think of five things going on in our world (pollution, economic issues, racism etc) and de-
cide how the characters in your book would react to them. You must choose at least 5 is-
sues and must discuss how at least 3 characters would respond to each and why. Not all
characters will have the same reaction
Construct a diorama (three-dimensional scene which includes models of people, buildings,
plants and animals) of one of the main events in the book. Include a paragraph describing
the scene
50 Point Tasks
Create a time capsule for your novel. The time capsule must have at least 25 objects in it
that represent something about your novel. Each item must have a short written explana-
tion of why it means something about to the novel. You should tell as much about the
novel through your time capsule as possible. Also include a letter explaining where you
would bury the time capsule and why
