2. Disaster refers to a serious
disruption of the functioning of a
community involving widespread
human, material, economic or
environmental losses which
exceed the ability of the affected
community to cope using its
own resources.
3. Disasters are caused by
natural or man-made
events wherein
communities experience
severe danger and incur
loss of lives and
properties.
4. Disaster comes in a knick of
time, holy or unholy hour. We
could not foretell what part of
the province/town would be
devastated, nor we are never
aware who the victims would
be.
5. Typhoons, earthquake, flood,
landslide, fire, sea and air mishaps
are forms of disaster that claimed
hundreds of casualties and
thousands of families left
homeless and caused millions of
pesos of damaged to properties.
6. On the average, the
Philippines experiences 20
typhoons a year, half of
these are destructive.
7. The Philippines is a host to
300 volcanoes, twenty-two
(22) of which are active,
together with active faults
and trenches that are
potential sources of
earthquakes.
9. Disaster risk reduction refers to the
concept and practice of reducing
disaster risk through systematic
efforts to analyze and manage the
causal factors of disasters,
lessened vulnerability of people and
property and improved
preparedness for adverse events.
10. School plays a vital role in disaster
preparedness for pupils/students.
Every school must equip
pupils/students with practical skills
and knowledge for them to cope
when unexpected natural disaster
comes their way.
11. Objectives:

risk management;

focused set of skills and techniques
to explore disaster issues.
