Anne Moody and the Black Panthers Essay
During the 1960s, many Black Americans drew attention to the inequalities among races in society.
Protest groups formed and demonstrations highlighting discrimination towards dark people were a
common practice for civil rights activists. Some activists believed non–violence was the only way to
overcome, and others, such as Anne Moody and the Black Panthers, had a more aggressive attitude
towards gaining freedom. In her autobiography, The Coming of Age in Mississippi, Anne Moody

In general, they felt that African–Americans had been treated as second–class citizens since the end
of the Civil War solely because they were Black. The Panthers developed a platform called the "Ten
Point Program" that described the changes they demanded to see in American society. They wanted
a country in which Black children are provided the same educational opportunities as White
children, and thought that Blacks could only progress by being taught the true history of Black
oppression in the U.S. They demanded that Black Americans have jobs that paid the same wages as
Whites and weren't limited to labor intensive positions. The party also felt that the police force
instigated more conflict and violence than protection, and believed they needed to provide security
for Blacks by themselves. Although they were known for using gun power when necessary, the
Panthers envisioned a peaceful society under a just government where all races could live together.
Simply put, the Black Panthers felt the United States government was not allowing Black Americans
to the live in the land of equal opportunity, but rather denying them the freedoms and liberties
constitutionally entitled to them. The Black Panthers wanted African–Americans to be able to
determine their destiny.

American life was transformed in the 1960s from the start of the decade. The 1960s consisted of
new rights and new understandings of freedom. The sixties consisted of rights for racial minorities
to be involved in the mainstream of the American lifestyle. However, unsolved issues of urban
poverty still existed. Women in the 1960s established a conversion in women's status, for instance,
women entered the paid workforce. America experienced a growth of conservative movements,
consequently, the 1960s would confront judgment for social ill, crime and drug abuse and drug

The week had been strenuous, yet productive. The multiple meetings with fellow organizations and
countless hours of volunteer services depleted my energy. Add the hours of academic work, and
well, I could never complain that my life was uneventful.On this eventful day, the Social Justice
Fellows were holding our monthly guest speaker meeting. Although at the time I was feeling
lethargic, the monthly meetings always gave me a boost of inspiration. I have an affinity towards

I believe that Sylvia Rivera is one of the three most important LGBTQ+ figures in America since
1970, because of her actions during her lifetime and the legacy that she left behind. In particular, her
activism called out the conservative and exclusionary politics of LGBT rights groups in the 1970s,
and the erasure of transgender women and drag queens from larger movements despite their
significance to those groups. Much of Rivera's activism focused on the inclusion and protection of
transgender people, and that legacy continues today. For example, the Sylvia Rivera Law Project, an

educational system. The working–class whites seemed to be the right group for the radical student's
attention. This was clearly not revolutionary, but they were oppressed and the SDS with their
optimistic view, wanted to help. They organized in the slums where students would work alongside
the residents to better understand what they were going through. The problem with programs such as
these is that most of the organizers were students who, when school started, would have to leave and
attend college (Unger 60). Students who returned to campuses after these summer programs no
longer saw their campuses as safe. The University of California at Berkeley saw the greatest impact
from the mood set by returning students. Students began to protest the administrations control over
activities. Many students were passionate in the fight, however for some it was nothing but a
diversion from school and boredom (Unger 68). Those few students, who just wanted to cause
mischief, would start a how new side to the Student Protest Movement.
The SDS would fight for what it originally believed in, although several factors would add to its

with one hundred thousand citizens occupying five main streets in Hong Kong to fight for the right

desires his social theory that being tough defines your identity in the inner city. If you're not tough,

Should Activists Be Transition Into A Politician?
Can activists, more specifically community activists, successfully transition into a politician? Can
they hold on to community–based interests over self–interest and ensure that the community
remains a creator and not an object of policy? In the New York Times, Room for Debate opinion
section, Bob Kerry, former governor of Nebraska and U.S. Senator, defines both terms. "An
activist", he notes, "is someone who organizes and acts for the purpose of changing a public policy
or law. A politician is someone who seeks election to a public office on behalf of a general ideology

Intro
Youth in industrialized countries currently are more educated than any generation has ever been.
While education levels have risen, the conventional wisdom is that this would cause levels of voter
turnout and party attachment to climb, however, this has not been the case. (Nevitte 1996, 50–51)
Despite the great deal of research on this topic, there is not consensus on the answer to this question.
In these interviews I attempted to look at how different forms of participation were viewed by
members of the LBGTQ+ community, in order to draw some inferences about why youth are less
likely to vote.
Hypothesis
LBGTQ+ students will be less likely to participate in traditional forms of political participation,
such as writing to an MP or becoming active in a Political Party, as a way to address equity issues.
Instead they will be more likely to engage in more grassroots, individual acts of activism.
Case selection
Addressing the question of why youth do not vote is a large task and one that would require much
more than two interviews. I chose to focus down onto the LBGTQ+ community as a most likely
case to find low levels of traditional political involvement and high levels of interpersonal grassroots
activism. Due to social views on being homosexual, gender queer, or transsexual, etc., until quite
recently, the LBGTQ+ community was totally excluded from traditional politics. This total

of the Selective Service Act, which forced American men to register with a local draft board once

''college experience''. They promote it through movies, tv shows and ads. It's made out to be this
amazing transcendental and essential part of life. Miss out on it, and you'll have missed out on your
youth. It's not only media though, older relatives and peers, influenced by the media, further

With the influx of social media use, the way activism is conducted also has to adapt to the changing
times. It is so easy for students, leaders, and other individuals to tweet or post about their political
view or support for a movement. President Trump has used twitter as one of his biggest social media
platforms. The biggest question now is if social media activism works?
The two biggest social media platforms that activists use are Twitter and Facebook. The hashtag was
created by twitter and launched in August 2007. In 2016, there was a total of 1.3 billion accounts
created, there are reports that 24 million accounts are bots. There are 24.6% journalists on twitter.
83% of world leaders on twitter, and 79% of accounts are held outside of the USA. There are 500
million tweets daily. With 500 million tweets, daily (Smith 2016). Looking at Facebook, there are 2
billion monthly active users (Sparks 2017). With more than 50 million businesses that have pages,
with 70% of companies outside of the USA (Dawney 2016).
Since, social media activism is so new, there are two different beliefs about the topic. One group
believes that the hashtag and social media activism is not enough. Shonda Rhimes, who is the
