Supportive PMO
• The most flexible type
• Provides a repository of project management documentation, templates,
and best practices
• Offers support as and when needed but with a high degree of autonomy
• Primary function – to act as a resource hub, providing tools,
templates, and training to project managers
• Works well in organizations with a strong collaborative culture (where
centralized control is not desirable)
EXAMPLE – a tech start-up could utilize a supportive PMO
structure, providing its highly skilled and autonomous
teams with the resources they need to manage their
projects effectively without imposing stringent controls.

Controlling PMO
• In the middle of the spectrum of control
• Provides support and requires compliance with specific project

• Offers a balance between autonomy and strict governance
• The most effective in organizations where standardization of processes is
required, but some flexibility is also allowed
EXAMPLE – a software development firm could benefit
from a controlling PMO – ensuring consistency across
projects while allowing flexibility for project managers to
adapt to the unique requirements of their respective
projects.
