Sasha Clarke
I’m Sasha Clarke, 16 years old and currently attend South Downs
College, studying Multi-Media Journalism Level 3. My ideal job in media
would be to work in events management, I am open minded in that I
don’t mind what area of event organising I work in but I am particularly
interested in festivals/concerts, fundraising and social events. The
reason I would love to get a job doing event management is because
there is always something new to do, everyday is different, you get to
socialise with a wide range of different people on a daily basis; getting
out about in the community. I think it would be incredibly fun and
interesting and I thrive under pressure.
I general would describe myself as a reliable, trustworthy and an
enthusiastic person. I am always eager to learn and perfect new skills. I
would like to think that I strive to do my best at everything I try and
enjoy completing new challenges from beginning to end.

What is an Event Manger and what do they do?
An event organiser is responsible for the production of events from conception
through to completion. Events can include: exhibitions and fairs; festivals;
conferences; promotions and product launches; fundraising and social events.
Some of the typical activities that an event organiser must do include:
 Researching markets to identify opportunities for events; producing
detailed proposals for events (e.g. timelines, venues, suppliers, legal
obligations, staffing and managing budgets);
 Securing and booking a suitable venue or location;
 Ensuring insurance, legal, health and safety obligations are adhered
to; coordinating venue management, caterers, stand designers, contractors
and equipment hire;
 Organising facilities for car parking, traffic control, security, first aid,
hospitality and the media;
 Identifying and securing speakers or special guests;
 Planning room layouts and the entertainment programmes, scheduling
workshops
 Liaising with marketing and PR colleagues to promote the event;
 The production of tickets, posters, catalogues and sales brochures, plus
social media coverage;
 Coordinating suppliers, handling client queries and troubleshooting on the
day of the event to ensure that all runs smoothly.
What skills would you need to work as an Event Organiser?
The role of an event organiser is often very hands-on and involves working as part of
a team; therefore strong communication and negotiation skills are a vital part of being
an event organiser. Moreover they must have excellent organisational skills and pay
attention to detail. Time-management skills and the ability to work under pressure are
also important has they have to work to set deadlines. Also useful skills to have are
problem solving, sales/marketing skills and the ability to manage budgets.
What qualifications would you need to work as an Event Organiser?
There is no specific route to becoming an event organiser but more work is open to
graduates and those with diplomas in these subjects: event management; hotel or
catering management; leisure and tourism; business; marketing which all build up a
portfolio.
Hours and Salary
Event organisers do not work a standard 9am-5pm day, they have to work flexible and
sometimes unsociable hours to meet each clients individual needs. This could
involving working day times or evening, travelling around many different venues.
Event organisers often work above the standard weekly hours of work but on average
they tend to work 30 to 40 hours per week. Also their salaries can hugely vary but
start at around 17,000 per year, although on a higher level can receive 50,000 to
60,000 per year!
I have been researching online and in newspapers for job advertisements for possible placements in event
organising which may crop up in the future, seeing if they could give me a bit of information about what
they are looking for in an employee.
I went onto the event management job adverting section of the Guardian online and came across a wide
variety of companies that are looking for event managers in different areas.
Here is an example of a job advert which interested me which was a charitable company which I liked the
sound of because it involves helping sick children as well as doing something you love.
This example is of an event manging job at a
higher level of expertise. As they are getting
paid towards the upper end of the market at
around £33,000- £37,000 per year.
At the bottom of this advertisement
they state a clear description of what
traits they would be looking for in a
potential employee such intelligent and
highly motivated.
This is another example of a job that I could apply for at beginning
of my career as I would be supported initially by a more senior
manager who would guide me and help me gain value experience.
The salary reflects this as it is much lower at around £18,000- to
£20,000.

Hospital. Despite all of this, she continued with family and friends to fund raise for the Piam Brown Ward, which is the children’s
cancer ward based at Southampton General Hospital, raising over £10,000 in just 3 years. Sadly, at the age of 10 on 19th
September 2004, Hannah passed away peacefully at her family home.
What do they do? They provide holiday homes for families of children with life shortening or life changing illnesses to give the
whole family including siblings a chance for valuable family time in one of the holiday homes. The company carries out a large
variety of events to fundraise for the charity e.g music festivals, annual balls, quiz nights, fates, children's parties, fashion shows
and grants.
Where are they based? Their main head office is based in Cowplain where they carry out all their administration, organising and
store stock for events, however the holiday homes are located within Hampshire including Hayling Island, Millford - On -Sea,
Oakdean (which is a lodge), and they are currently in the process of buying a new home.
Are they part of a larger organisation? Although they are not part of a larger organisation they do communicate
with other charitable organisations such as Dreams Come True.
Who is in charge of hiring staff? Pam Marshall, Hannah's mum, who founded the company shortly after her death.
What staff do they employee? On the committee there are currently 7 people including:
 Chairperson& Trustee - Sue Stokes
 Treasurer& Trustee - Carolyn Westbrook
 Secretary& Trustee - Pam Marshall
 Trustees - Colin Marshall& Kev Stokes
 Committee - Nicola Newton & Claire Cook
 However it's supported by a large number of volunteers.
Finical Facts about the Company?
 How much did they fundraise last financial year approximately? -£84,000
 How much are the homes worth?- Hayling Home & New Forest £50,000, Oakdean Lodge £165,000

Potential Work Experience Placement- Hannah's Holiday Home Appeal
This is a screen of the up to date version of my CV.
Covering letter that I will send to Hannah’s Holiday
Home Appeal for voluntary work experience.
Strengths – I have brilliant organisation and time management skills which helps me stick
to deadlines and meet targets which is an essential in event management. I have good
communication skills and am a great team worker. Also I would say I am confidence,
reliable and always finish any challenges I am faced with. All my strengths are transferrable
skills that I could apply to the job of an event organiser.
Weaknesses- My weaknesses are I can sometimes get stressed under pressure which may
come a problem if I have lots of deadlines and targets to meet. I will help overcome this by
keeping up to date with all my work.
Opportunities- Gaining any relevant qualifications I need to help my reach my final goal
and get into university or secure myself an apprenticeship. Getting a degree in an area I am
interested in e.g. event management, advertising, marketing. Finding work experience in an
event organising company e.g. Exposure Promotions. Moreover I could volunteer with
charity based companies e.g. Rowans Hospice to help organise fundraising events; helping
gain experience.
Threats- Possible barriers I may be faced with is competition from people wanting the same
job and opportunities as me. In order to over come this I will have to make sure I build up a
strong portfolio and make myself stand out against my competitors. Another barrier is that
currently I am limited on transport as I do not drive so if the company is far away for
example most big event organising companies are based in London it is difficult to get
there. In order to cover come this I will start learning to drive as soon as I can but in the
mean time still look for possible opportunity but use my bus and train pass in the
meantime. Money is also an issue if driving becomes an issue as I do not have a large salary
job. One other possible barrier is that I might not have the required qualifications for te job
so they do not accept me. To prevent his I will try and acquire as much experience and
courses I can to build my portfolio.
