2. Shot #1
The first shot is an establishing shot which
shows the Los Angeles skyline. This allows the
audience to see where the film is being set
and to get some understanding of the nature
of the film; being set in L.A. suggests glamour
and glitz. The scene is at night, connoting the
potential for the plot to be dark, linking in with
the genre of being a neo-noir film. The
soundtrack is a low track, which connotes a
negative plot through its dark nature.
3. Shot #3
This shot shows a first-person view of a driving
through the dark streets of L.A. The continuing
soundtrack is added to by the voice of the
main character (Ryan Gosling). The inclusion of
a voiceover gives the audience a hint at what
the plot is about, and also introduces the
audience to the main character. It is still dark,
which remains to emphasise the dark nature
of the plot.
4. Shot #7
The seventh shot shows a man running from a
building, partially obscured by some metal
bars. The shot is from the first person
perspective of the driver, bringing the
audience into the shot. The bars connote
being imprisoned, referencing the criminal
nature of the plot, with the darkness, again,
symbolising the negative connotations of the
plot. It is included through fast editing, lasting
no longer than a couple of seconds, which
adds to the action nature of the film through
the fast-paced shots. The soundtrack is…
5. Shot #8
The eighth shot shows two masked men
getting into the back of a car, holding what
looks like weapons (although it cannot really
be seen whether they are firearms or another
weapon). The masks immediately suggest
danger and violence, with the connotation of
crime being derived from the societal view of
masks. The soundtrack is…
