The opening sequence introduces the dark and disturbing tone of the film through unsettling visual and audio elements. Shots of a blade, overlapping writing, and money with the word "GOD" subtly set the stage for a psychopathic antagonist. The sequence ends with a shot of city apartments, implying the danger exists within.

1. The opening shot of the sequence is of this scrap book the title of the film appears
on the screen then flashes bold. This paired with the soundtrack creates an uneasy
feeling in the audience.

2. The title of the film flashes on to the screen quickly near the beginning of the sequence
to signify the actions taking place are significant to the greater film. The font is faded
and overlapping and creates a sense of disorder as it is not clean cut this reflects the
psychopathic nature of the antagonist of the film.

3. The sequence then cuts to a close up a person holding the prop of a blade in
there hand. This creates an uneasy feeling in the audience as it is a dangerous
object.

4. In the next part of the sequence they have overlapped close up shots of the person
writing. This creates a distorted view and looks psychotic to the audience this
introduces the nature of the antagonist.

5. A close up of money is shown with the word ‘GOD’ in the central frame this subtly
introduces the audience to the plot of the film.

6. The sequence ends on a shot of lots of apartments showing it is set in a city. The
soundtrack stops playing when this shot appears on the screen showing that the
danger is not out there but in the place the last few scenes were shot.

8. Following opening sequence conventions the film opens with the (Miramax) logo
alone on a black screen.

9. The name of the film appears on the screen alone in a simple font reflecting the
serious nature of the film. It also appears before any of the action begins to signify
the beginning of the film.

10. A voice over is played over a series of establishing shots to set the scene of were the
film will be taking place.

11. This shot shows a ‘sheriff’ taking a criminal to his car. This is conventional of thriller
films as often the protagonist is working in law enforcement or has run ins with the law.

12. This close up of a gas canister introduces the plot of the film as the gas can
aster has links to the central antagonist of the film.

13. In the last scene in the sequence a long shot I used to show the car drive of down
the road leaving the audience behind with lots of questions regarding the new
character that has just been introduced.

15. The sequence begins with a long shot of a darkly lit corridor. The bold red
credits create a sense of danger as this is what the colour red connotes.
This paired with the sharp music playing over the scene creates suspense.

16. Fast paced editing is then used to cut to a spinning shot of a stair case. This creates a
sense of confusion to the audience and also sets the dark tone the film is going to
take.

17. The sequence then fades in to this shot of fire which again connotes danger and
sets the dark tone of the film. The credits appear in capital letters in white to
contrast with the dark scenes being shown.

18. The prop of a gun is used this is conventional of thriller films as it implies there
will be scenes of violence this creates suspense and a sense of excitement as the
audience.

19. A dark room/cell then appears on screen. The hand cuffs and chains on the wall gives
the audience a clue that the film contains some sort of prison like theme, this is also
shown through the earlier shot of the gates. This gives the audience visual clues as to
what the film will be about rather than dialogue.

20. The final scene in the sequence is a long shot of a dark isolated island to set the scene
of were the film is taking place it also leaves the audience with questions as none of the
characters have been introduced.

21. The name of the film at the end of the sequence to signify the setting of the scene is
finished and the action will begin. The colour red has been used as it connotes the
dark tone of the film.

23. The sequence begins with a shot of the classic ‘warner brothers’ logo however it is
in dark black and blue colours to reflect the ‘dark’ tone of the film.

24. The same colours are used in the following shots showing other credits for the film.

25. The dark shots then cut to this shot of buildings showing the film is set in a city.
The camera continues to zoom in to one of the buildings to show this is were the
action in the next scene is taking place.

26. The next shot is of a man wearing a mask and dark clothing he looks out of place this
tells the audience clearly he shouldn’t be there and he must be up to something.

27. In next scene they have used the prop of guns to show the danger and violence
there will be in the film. This grips the audience as they know to expect this
through out the film.

28. After the joker reveals his identity a close up of his face is used to show his
annoyed expression as he talks to the man on the floor.

29. In the final scene of the sequence we watch as the holds the grenade in his
mouth until the scene fades to black this builds anticipation for the audience as
they are waiting for the violence to continue.
