Green Street Analysis Released in 2005 Directed by Lexi Alexander Independent crime drama
Green Street Summary Green street is a crime drama exploring the nature of football hooligans and there pride to fight for there club. It starts in America were a university student is excused of taking drugs at his campus. He is told to leave Harvard, Elijah Woods character comes to visit his sister how has married and ex leader of the West Ham football firm. He mix’s with his brother in laws son who get him involved within the firm. He is discovered to be no what he say’s he his and ends up hated by the rest of the firm. At the end the ex firm leader is stabbed with a bottle and his son is killed in a big fan brawl.
Locations The film is mainly shot around London, mainly around the West Ham Football Stadium (Upton Park). The beginning is set in America in Harvard University. London homes, Pub, in side the West Ham stadium and various shops.
Characters Elijah Woods plays the main character named Matt also referred to as the ‘yank’. Pete is played by Charlie Hunnam, there is also the ‘Major’, Steve who is Pete’s brother. Bower, Shannon, Dave, Swill, Ike who are members of the West Ham firm. Tommy Hatcher is the leader of the Millwall
Enigma Code There are not many clues at the beginning of the film. I think its clear from the very start that it’s a film that will contain football fan violence. The only clue I can think of is there attitude towards on another, they speak in slang and speak love for there football club. The fight at the beginning leads you to believe that there will be a lot more violence and that’s what the film contain mainly. They mention the major that makes me ponder if this will occur again.
Camera work A shot that is used a lot through the beginning of the film, this is mainly to establish the area and how large the firms are. This indicates that they are in a London tube station. It also shows the size of the firm and what they are wearing. There are lots of the shoulder shot so you can see exactly who the West. ham fans are pointing towards. Also used for speech in the American university. Medium shots are a shot that is used as a standard shot which is common throughout the first couple of scene’s.
Editing technique The editing of the scene is mainly simple for the opening scenes. Its just quick editing so the pace of the fight and action looks fast and dramatic. It makes the fight look slick so it moves from one fight to another
Inspiration for my film opening For my groups opening 2 minutes we are likely to take the speed, so that its fast with slick transaction between each movement. We also have been inspired by the outfits that they were on green street. They were neutral l colours (not showing what football teams we favoured). Our last is a shot that commonly features in football hooligan films, which shows there threatening facial expressions and the way they walk
