ANALYSIS OF EXCITING
ACTION FILM OPENINGS
By Emma Waite
James Bond Quantum of Solace
 The first 32 seconds is showing “Metro Goldwyn Mayer” and then it moves on to the production “Columbia sony pictures entertainment company”
 This then fades to black showing an establishing shot moving towards a mountain. This is cut to several close ups of a car. The music at this point has
increased the pass and has become louder. The car is in a very dark place at the moment.
 This them moves back to the establishing shot moving towards the mountain at a faster pace then before to correlate with the pace of the music. The
shot is also closer then where it started before.
 This then moves again to the car using close ups, tracking shots and pan shots. Because the previous shots have been moving closer to the mountain and
the car in a dark place this suggest the car is in a tunnel in the mountain.
 These shots continue being cut quickly after each other. There are quick close ups of a round of bullets and for some people in the front of a black car.
 This then moves to the establishing shot again even closer to the mountain and moving quicker to again correlate with the building pace of the music.
This then shows that there is a tunnel in the mountain where the cars are.
 There is another set of close ups and extreme close ups of a black car and a man. The last shot of that sequence is a extreme close up of a hand and a
gun.
 This then moves to the establishing shot again even closer to the tunnel in the mountain. At the point the music is at its peek so this warns the viewer
something's going to happen in the next sequence.
 The next shots are the same close ups of the car but of the man accelerating out of the tunnel. The music has shopped to show the loud noise from the
engine.
 After a couple of close ups shots, medium shots and master shots the viewer establishes that the man being chased in the main character.
 The fast pace, cars, helicopter shots, building tension music, close ups, quick pace of editing, the props (guns), crashes and chase scenes are all shown as
conventions of an action film.
 Once the chase has stopped the camera shot shows the car going into a side street. This shot tracks the car and then moves up towards the tops of the
buildings. The music at this point in shower and mysteries. As this is happening the typical James bond themed music comes on reviling the pace the
chase took pace.
 A long tunnel is introduced to the shot with the car. The typical James Bond music is playing as he drives though the tunnel. The car stops and James
Bond gets out to revile a man in the boot of his car. The only words said in the whole 4 minutes are “It’s time to get out” This queues the music to start
up again and it moves to the tile sequence. The title sequence is digitally made.
 First there is who made the film, then the main actor, Then the title which is shown when a bullet gets near.
Fast Five
 The first shot a medium shot of a man on a bus, wearing an orange shirt surrounded by other
men with the same t-shirt on, this shows the reader that the man is a prisoner. This shot is also
has depth of field which highlight the main character. This shot then fades to black.
 Then there is a long shot of the bus coming towards the camera. This then shows three cars race
passed the camera.
 A zoom shot is used to make the viewer focus on the bus.
 The location is very quiet so makes a perfect place to to try and run down a bus of criminals.
The setting contrasts to the noise fast chase going on from the quiet countryside.
 There are serial shots of the drivers of the cars and the cars and then the main character in the
bus.
 There are shots of the cars turning around and taking other the bus. in-between this there is a
low angle shot of the driver of the car which turned around.
 Quick cuts shows the bus turn other and roll. This is to correlate with the high spend chase.
 After this the title appears.
 There is a tension building music from the start with the sound of the cars and the crash other
the top.
