The History Of Shoplifting
I'm not sure I know anyone with an extensive criminal history. But from the people I knew in high school, some of my peers engaged in drug
dealing (drugs themselves), shoplifting... the list goes on. I feel like if I knew them better I could say more about their behavior. From what I
remember about those people I once knew is that they were fairly closed off. The only people they talked to were people they trusted, and often that
meant that they were involved in criminal acts as well. They were not welcome to outsiders and seemed very hostile. If my little brother were to
shoplift, I'd like to imagine I'd recognize the signs that is acting out. I'd like to think I'd be worried, but I'd also have his best interest in mind. If feel

Letter Of The Case Of Law
INTEROFFICE MEMORANDUM OF LAW
TO:Sara Lee, Attorney
FROM: Donna Nasser, Paralegal
DATE: October 17, 2008
RE: People v. Sam Kant
OFFICE FILE NUMBER:HQ 22467
DOCKET NUMBER:09HQ9456
STATEMENT OF ASSIGNMENT: Sam Kant has requested that our office represent him in his defense againstshoplifting charges.
FACTS: Our client, Sam Kant, was arrested for shoplifting at Bilmart, a national department store. At his wife's request, Mr. Kant went to Bilmart on
Wednesday, October 20, 2008, and purchased a case of six 4 oz. cans of Hoover's Baked Beans with Bacon. Upon returning home, his wife chastised
him for once again failing to purchase what she had requested. Apparently, Mrs. Kant can't stand the taste of Hoover's Beans, but is very fond of the
Handell's brand, and was planning to serve them to her book club when she hosted them for lunch the following afternoon. Mrs. Kant ordered her
husband to return to Bilmart to exchange the Hoover's beans for Handell's beans.
Upon arrival at the store early the next morning, Mr. Kant found that the line for customer service was extremely long due to Bilmart's annual
sponsorship of a major community food drive. In an effort to save time, and thinking the line might be shorter upon his return, Mr. Kant placed the case
of Hoover's beans into a shopping cart, made his way through the store to the bean shelf, and then added the case of Handell's beans to the cart.
However, upon his return, the line had not diminished and it

Don’T Steal. This Principle Of Human Behavior Has Been
Don't steal. This principle of human behavior has been widely held for centuries. The principle prominently appears in the Ten Commandments in the
Old Testament's Book of Exodus. Chapter 20 addresses the followers of God and proclaims, "You shall not steal" directly following "You shall not
murder" and "You shall not commit adultery" (Exodus 20.13–15). Thou shall not steal is not only prominent in the Bible and the Christian religion, but
it is widely maintained in cultures around the world, specifically the United States, as a standard of honesty. Throughout the US, federal, state, and
local laws prohibit stealing or the act of theft, and techniques such as security personnel and cameras have been employed to thwart stealing minor items

The answer in the majority of situations, is yes. Statistically, 10 million people have been caught shoplifting in the past five years. However, the rate of
being caught is only 1 in 48 shoplifts, and caught shoplifters are only turned over to the police 50 percent of the time (NASP). This rate is not high,
but 10 million peoples' lives have been affected. Overall the risk of getting caught is there, but not exorbitant for the non–habitual shoplifter. Other
costs beyond those posed to the agent shoplifter include criminal justice procedures and the costs of the stolen good to the vendor. The criminal
justice costs are countered by fines assessed to those taken in by police. However, the costs imposed to a store are not countered, and amount to
$13 billion in goods per year, or $35 million per day (NASP). Although that cost is not small, it is inflated by the 3 percent of shoplifters who are
considered professionals and contribute to 10 percent of the $13 billion. Professional shoplifting is surely immoral, so we will discount the number
by such. Thus, the cost of solo shoplifters is roughly $11.7 billion (NASP). This cost is clearly large and amounts to the majority of the costs of
shoplifting outside of the risk to the shoplifters themselves. The sole benefit of shoplifting is obviously the gain of whatever good is shoplifted, which
is a median value of $37.50 (NASP). The good could range from something the shoplifter

Shoplifting is a large concern of any retail store, including Rite Aid pharmacy. Employees are trained through continuing education what to look for
when customers are possibly shoplifting. Customers with backpacks are not allowed to wander around the store. Backpack may be held behind the
front register for customers. Security measures such as vault boxes are used on high risk items, and high priced items are kept at the front of the store
behind the front registers. Employees are made aware monthly of the most shoplifted items that month in every district of Rite Aid Pharmacies.
Employees can then monitor those specific items for possible shoplifting. Security announcements may be made over the store intercom to alert
employees of possible shoplifting activities and to scan all aisles. Credit card and check fraud is a growing concern of Rite Aid pharmacy. Employees

These monitor every sale, return, void and suspension that is done. Software on each POS register will flag any odd transactions, voids, no sales
and such for corporate to look in to. Employees have all bags checks and recipients from purchases made verified by a manager or supervisor at the
end of every shift. Bags and purses are not permitted to be store in the pharmacy. Employees are trained about what POS does, what it tracks and so

With the increase of population in the United States, more people will be going to stores and buying items they need. Dan White states that it's
acceptable for racial profiling to exist, for the businesses economic survival. From the actions of others in previous times, employees keep a cautious
eye on customers from certain ethnic groups. This kind of security is often done when someone of color, black or hispanic, male and female, comes
into a store. They're often followed throughout the store and then asked to be searched. In order to protect those products, they must be cautious of
people, making sure they don't shoplift. Shoplifting represents a third of the 31.3 billion dollars that the retail industry loses every year. By having

unincorporated Seminole County in reference to an over with shoplifting. Upon arrival, I made contact with Managers Ashlee Beckham and Edward

Would you like to have someone snatch an item from your store?Tracking customers are becoming more and more popular for stores in the United
States. Currently, retailers are using cameras and smartphones to learn about their customers' shopping experience and tendencies. Critics may argue
that spying on customers is creepy, but it prevents shoplifting and gets customers good deals and coupons. First and foremost, by using cameras and
smartphones prevents shoplifting. In the article How and Why Retail Stores Are Spying on You in paragraph nine, the author states "The system can
also nab shoplifters." By using this system more people will be aware that there are cameras all around them. In that case, there will be many fewer
shoplifters. Also, in paragraph eight of the same article, the author states, "There are even mannequins whose eyes are cameras that detect the age, sex,
ethnicity, and facial expressions of passers–by...your face and vehicle license plate can be linked. " By having these cameras all over in the most
imperceptible places, people attempting to steal will get caught. In that case, if more of the customers hear... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

retailer to keep you on the store's network, which can also detect when you search other online sellers for lower prices." When being connected to the
store customers can get better deals on certain items. For example, if a customer checks prices online while they're in the store, they might get

The Rebel Sell: If We Hate Consumerism
Culture jamming even relates to shoplifting; shoplifting can be seen as a manifestation of culture jamming. Rachel Shteir in the chapter Robin Hoods
2.0 explores shoplifting as a cultural phenomenon. There are many reasons why people shoplift such as economic dislocation, compensation, addiction,
or entitlement. The main reason is to steal from big corporations because shoplifters think that they are doing a right thing and it is sabotage against big
corporations. Shteir says, "Shoplifting from a locally owned place was seen as a really shitty thing to do, but shoplifting a toothbrush from Wal–Mart
was harmless at worst" (65). Shoplifting is used against corporations who abuse their employees because corporations do not care about unethical ...

The movie expresses a concern for growing consumerism and the power of media. It is a critique of today's society and rejection of material
possession and consumerism. The narrator (unnamed) is portrayed as a compulsive buyer who values money and materialist possessions. He is
trying to live a life that he has seen in advertisements. He defines himself by what he owns, he would "flip through catalogs and wonder, what
kind of dining set defines me as a person?" and shopping has replaced his sexual stimulation because he "became a slave to the Ikea Nesting
Impulse." He is seduced by ads, he measures his life's value by things he owns, and he cannot escape the consumer culture. The objects that he buys
do not make him happy or give him satisfaction. The narrator's view is changed when he meets Tyler who sabotages consumerism and is a culture
jammer. He jams consumer culture by pissing in the soup served to rich people, attaching scenes of porn into family movies, and making soap out of
fat. Tyler is a founder of fight club where those men try to put away their identity because they feel that they are turned down or neglected by the
system. In order to live, we need to strip the brands off from our bodies, social rules, and expectations. Tyler created a Project Mayhem the illustration
of culture subversion in which they fight and rebel against the system, society, and culture. Smashing

The Pros And Cons Of Shoplifting
Shoplifting is one of the crimes that have been existing in our society today. It is considered as a significant problem adversely affecting both the
establishment or store and consumers. It is because of a high financial loss, some people tend to commit shoplifting to support their needs. Other reason
is that most of the people want to acquire something in an instant manner, that's why they tend to shoplifter for them to save time and well, effort. They
also commit this kind of crime because they knew or they have this perception that they will have a less sentence rather than the other crimes that have

This technique has twenty–five sub–categories with five major categories. These categories are increasing effort, increasing the risk, reducing the
rewards, reducing provocations and removing excuses. To increase the effort with the application of target hardening or by controlling the sections
of the store, to increase the risk by extending the guardianship of the store, to reduce the rewards by concealing or removing of items, the
provocations might be decreased by polite services, and the excuses might be removed by posting instructions or setting rules (Cornish & Clarke,
2003). According to Farrington et al. (1993), electronic tagging and store redesign are efficient in decreasing the cause of shoplifting and the
deployment of uniformed guard had no effect on shoplifting (Farrington et al, 1993). In the study of Poyner (1993), he group in six general categories

community services, security devices, target removal or modification". In his study, about half of the measures evaluated were found to be effective.
The efficiency were proved in all six categories of measures, but target removal or modification enjoyed the largest number of efficiency and social

In some cases the shoppers are trying to purchase an item through self– scan tills, and does not scan the item, and directly put the item in bagging area,

Secondly, what has been noticed in the ASDA is they used high– stacked shelves to put the groceries item. This means, their customers able sneak any

store. Since the stacked shelves in ASDA are high, the robbers feel invisible to employees. Thus, ASDA should use lower shelves that can reduce
incidences of shoplifting.
Thirdly, it has been noticed that there were advertisement posted on window. it is important to remain visible from in and out of store. Therefore when
there are intruders inside intended to harm anyone in the store, they can be clearly seen by people from outside the store. That is the reason why

Larceny: Theft and Extremely Important Resources Essay
Larceny is defined as the wrongful taking and carrying away of the personal goods of another from his or her possession with intent to convert them
to the takers own use. To bluntly say it, larceny is stealing from others. No matter what the motives or reasons behind stealing are, it is still wrong. I
imagine there is a multitude of motives for someone to convince himself or herself that it is worth the risk to steal something. Some other people
might also not have the conscience to feel wrong for stealing. A large part of this is because people do not understand who or what they are harming
when they steal. It is very common to become self–indulged and only worry about your problems. Even after being caught someone might only feel...

When someone decides to steal, they are causing the police to take time out of their day to deal with minor issues. While this happens, there are
other important issues occurring where people's lives could be at risk and police resources are needed. Shoplifters need to think about how they are
affecting their community's safety, not just theirs. Petty crimes like larceny are a burden on police and it is a citizen's moral duty to understand who
they are hurting when they steal. Along with the police being misused, court systems are also using their time and effort for petty things. Millions of
people volunteer or are paid to bring justice to those who break the law. Although stealing is extremely wrong and it is an important issue to be
addressed, a court's time and effort would be better spent on dealing with bigger issues. Once again, when someone shoplifts they don't understand
who they are hurting and the burden they are placing on a community. These issues need to be more focused on, and the harms they cause people and
the community need to be highlighted. Along with a community being hurt, his or her actions negatively affect those personally close to the shoplifter
as well. Whether it is a mother, father, sibling, or child, there is always someone else being hurt when stealing takes place. It is very easy for the
shoplifter to only worry about him or her and not think about the

Shoplifting Theft Committed By Juveniles
Introduction Group 2 was assigned the Rainier and Henderson hotspot in Rainier Beach, Seattle, Washington. This intersection is inside the Beach
Square area, and is located in between 3 schools and a community center. A fourth school is located just outside the Beach Square boundary, but was
still used within the scope of the project. There are three bus stops and two shopping centers nearby the intersection. Two of these bus stops are across
the street from the schools. Rainier and Henderson has a mixed land use from the blending of commercial and nearby residential areas. For our project,
we focused on the shopping centers that were located nearby the four schools.

This proximity brings together the offenders and targets at the same time and space. It is also important to note that the data packet specified the
majority of the juvenile crimes recorded in 2013 were occurring on Fridays (CEBCP, 2013). However, there was no consistent monthly pattern that
could be determined. We believe the juveniles would offend on Friday due to the release of school for the weekend. Because there were multiple
schools within the hotspot, there would be a large convergence of juveniles at or around the same time. Also, there were multiple transit stops and paths
within the hotspot. Crime might have been exacerbated by the transient nature of the area. There was recently a large event that brought
approximately 1,000 people to the area (CEBCP, 2013). This would also result in a large convergence of people along the bus stops and bring
strangers to the area, aggravating the current crime problem. However, Group 2 specifically focused on the juveniles who were shoplifting clothing
from the nearby stores.
Why is the Problem Occurring? Our group analyzed the hotspot through two different theories: Routine Activity Theory and Crime Pattern Theory.
Originally, we were only going to use Routine Activity Theory to explain why the crime was occurring, but we could not sufficiently explain the crime
without including Crime Pattern Theory. In this

to being one of sixteen owners of the name Foodtown. Joe, 46, was born from poor Italian immigrant parents in Brooklyn, NY. His parents did not

they used to open and run a deli. "My dad rolled the dice with us. He didn't have a lot and he gave us everything," Joe said. Since Joe was now a

owning the deli with his brother for three years, Joe decided to take the police officer test. He passed and was planning to attend the police

Shoplifting In Sociological Research
Shoplifting is criminal issue that is frequent, nonviolent, public and observable that serves as a serious concern for the criminal justice system
(Weaver and Carroll 1985: 350). Shoplifting is the criminal action of stealing goods from a shop, while pretending to be a customer (Oxford 2016). In
sociological research today, shoplifting is vaguely defined behaviour that differs in detection and has various degrees of punishment (Newberg
1968:132). Shoplifting is a crime committed by offenders varying in gender, age, race, and class which gives it a vague reputation in sociological
research and leaves scholars uncertain of who the primary offenders are. A study done by Dabney, Hollinger, and Dugan (2004) aims to identify who

shoppers ranging from age 35 to 54 that were the most common shoplifters. Adults in this age group were at nearly 1.7 greater odds of shoplifting
than persons younger than 35 (Dabney et al. 2004:715). This age group is described as being "gainfully employed, middle–aged adults who
occasionally steal as a means of acquiring goods that stretch beyond the household budget" (Dabney et al. 2004:720). In terms of race, non–whites
were no more likely to shoplift than were whites however, Hispanic females were more likely than any other race/gender grouping to do so.

Five-Finger Discount Essay
Five–Finger Discount
Every day, prices of products that we need continue to go up and up. Simple things like bread and tea go up for reasons that at first seem unknown.
These High prices make it hard for many families to make ends meet. At the root of this problem there are many factors like inflation, over priced
mark–up, and quantity of the product. But the one thing that should not lead to higher prices is shoplifting.
Shoplifting is a plague that is sweeping this nation. Because shoplifting has become such a problem, stores are forced to raise prices to make up for
lost sales. This is not their fault, however, few people put the blame where it belongs. The thieves that plague our economy are to blame and the stores

And to boot most security cameras are not able to point straight down. This leaves a blind spot right under the camera. And this creates a big problem
for the store, because the people whom know what they are doing just need to take the object they want to steal to these sections. From there slipping
something in your pocket is no big deal. So cameras are most effective as a scare tactic. But, for big stores, stopping half of the nervous teenage kids
from shoplifting is reason enough to hang those stupid black balls from the ceiling.
Another technique used by big stores is undercover employees. These employees sole job is to follow around punk teenagers, or other people that
look like they are thieves, and wait for them to steal something. Many people are upset to learn that they are being followed in their favorite stores.
However this technique does work with much success. And if you are truly upset with the idea, I suggest shopping at smaller stores.
Undercover employees are not good for every store. For example, a small drug store can't afford the labor to bring in someone to walk around the store
all day. If a store can afford this, I suggest looking into this.
I was surprised to learn that there are major name stores that still trust the customer. The Old Navy in my neighborhood runs on the honor system.
These means that there are no security cameras, undercover employees, or even hidden security devices.

Shoplifting
Shoplifting is a serious crime. You are taking what is not yours; you are stealing from other people, which causes them tremendous harm. Have you
ever asked yourself that question: what if I get caught? Don't you ever think about your future? If you get caught, you will get arrested and go to
jail. Don't you know that you are going to have a police record, which would be like a sticker, and it will stick on you for the rest of your life,
especially when you are a brown–skinned teenager or adult in the United States of America? Some of those teenagers still shoplift even though they
have money in their pockets or in their purses. Maybe such behavior gives them some sort of power or something; who knows? They think they can

Those teenagers have to know that it's not worth it to have a criminal record; their lives are more valuable than that. And they can be whatever they
want to be. What they don't know is that shoplifting can be costly, even though the offender is not convicted. It can put up a red light for you
wherever you go, such as stopping you from entering a profession like medicine, engineering, law school, etc. It may even prevent you from
admittance to a university. And it's a shame to see mothers teaching their children how to be shoplifters. I used to catch them all the time when I was a
Customer Service Supervisor (CSS) at Wal–Mart. Some people are just unfit and negative parents. Why in the world would somebody teach his or her
own children how to become thieves? Is this a good thing? Negative people are nothing but darkness and trouble. By the way, do you know that
some stars do shoplifting too. My advice to you, teenagers or adults who are doing shoplifting, is: try as hard as possible to eradicate this villain out
of your lives for good. You are not only harming yourselves, but other people as well. Don't think only for today. Think for tomorrow, also

Why Stealing Is Wrong?
Kade Demuth March 11, 2017 Why Stealing is Wrong Petty Theft is the theft of goods valued at or less than $950. It is also a misdemeanor and a
mandatory charge of between $50 and $1,000 and/or up to six months jail time for a first time offender of petty theft of retail merchandise. California
provides parental programs to certain individuals accused of a first time offence, alternative to prosecution. Those who apply are to fulfil court
mandated requirements such as community service. Upon successful completion of the tasks the charge will be dismissed. When a person is not able
to apply the person is to negotiate the plea bargains. These typically include pleading guilty in exchange for lesser charges or a reduced sentence. In

It is easier to steal from an anonymous, large organization, than from an individual, easier to steal from someone who seems well–endowed, has so
much more. He won 't even notice, he has so much money anyway, the dishonest shopkeeper probably thinks stealing from people he considers have
much more than he has or are too stupid to notice. Stealing becomes an issue when the person doing the stealing is old enough to know better.
Sometimes children under the age of five take objects that interest them, not yet understanding that stealing is wrong. They might not have enough
self–control to resist taking something they want. For those old enough to know better, there are several reasons for stealing. Stealing may be caused
by jealousy, low self–esteem, or peer–pressure. Social issues like feeling excluded or overlooked can also cause stealing. People may steal to prove
their independence, to act out against family or friends, or because they do not respect others or themselves, Sometimes, stealing is a compulsive
disorder. This is called kleptomania. In other cases, a person may have come to believe that stealing is socially acceptable. Some people steal as a
means to survive due to economic hardship. Or steal to fill an emotional or physical void in their lives. When theft is repetitive or is done without any
remorse, guilt or understanding of the impact it can be a sign of other problems. These problems often

Essay on Shoplifting Effects on The Community
Shoplifting is a major problem in today. The temptation of not paying for something, just hiding it away and saving your own money is a large factor

wrong with your feelings not to feel bad about stealing from stores. Every time you steal from stores they are set back that much money and might
even have to fire someone that could be one of your friends.People in the community lose respect for you.
If you do know someone that is in teen court or are friends with someone that is in teen court you will get your discipline from them, believe me I
know. It helps out the community service areas if you have to do community service while the culprit is stuck doing numerous hours of work,
without any pay, but it doesn't help you at all.Shoplifting can also affect you towards the community, because if you have shoplifting on your
record it will be difficult to get a job, some don't want people who break the law working for them. Just shoplifting from that store will prevent you
from getting a job there ever or any of that kind if it is a chain. Just the fact of breaking the law while shoplifting should be bad enough reason not to
do it. Even if it does effect your community, and you should care about that. Shoplifting is a crime and has a major consequence compared to what
you can get out of it. Even if peer pressure is a factor, or just the fact that you wanted the product and didn't have the money, stealing is wrong. It's self

It can also affect you towards the community because if you have shoplifting on your record, it could be difficult to get a job. Especially in retail and
the store you stole from. Community service is also an inconvenience to shoplifters that get caught. The shoplifter is stuck doing numerous hours of
work on their own time, without pay.
The consequences of shoplifting also affect you and your family members majorly. An example of this might be if you have younger siblings. If
your sibling is aware of the situation or even aware that you've shoplifted before, he or she might think it's a good idea and that they can get away
with it. Older siblings are a big influence on younger siblings and they often look up to them. If they know you steal, they're going to think its okay.
Another reason this affects your family is because of your parents. Your parents also have to go through a lot during the process. They have to attend
meetings with you, usually drive you to your community service site, and schedule meetings. Parents also tend to lose your trust after an event like
this. Trust is a big issue and it's really hard to get back, you must earn it. My mom has always taught me to be honest, hardworking, and trustworthy.
These qualities were always really important to her and after all this happened I knew she would be really disappointed.

The Cost Of Retail Growth
When people think of the word shrink they often refer to what happens when you first leave a new shirt in the dryer and it comes out two times
smaller than when you first purchased it. People in retail, however, refer to shrink as "the portion of inventory that gets lost, damaged or stolen"
(Kokemuller). Now that you know the basic definition of shrink, what causes it and how significant are the losses involved in shrink. Retail shrinkage
is calculated by a percentage based on the value of lost inventory, divided by the sales in the same period. For example, assume that the value of loss
goods in a period equals $30,000 and in that same period sales were at $600,000. To calculate the shrink you would take the total losses (30,000),
divided by the total amount of sales (600,000), the total losses for that period would be .05 or 5 percent (Kokemuller.) The company's shrink would
be five dollars per one–hundred dollars of total sales. So what exactly are the causes of shrink and what are the estimated losses nationally? The main
causes of retail shrink are employee theft and shoplifting, followed by accidental damages. 43.7 percent of all shrinkage in 2010, was credited to
employee theft, one–third or 32.6 percent of shrinkage was caused by customer shoplifting (Kokemuller). Retail theft in the United States totaled an
astounding forty–two billion or 1.48 percent of total sales. Mobile phones, apparel, power tools, makeup products rank among the most–stolen

McCann v Wal-Mart Inc. Essays
McCann v. Wal–Mart Stores, Inc.
Louisiana Eastern District Court
210 F.3d 51 (1st Cir. 2000)
Fact:
Debra McCann and two of her children (Jillian, and Jonathan) were shopping in Bangor, Maine Wal–Mart on December 11th, 1996. After about an
hour and a half, the McCann's paid for their purchases and proceeded to leave the store. On the way out two Wal–Mart employees (Jean Taylor and
Karla Hughes) blocked their path to the exit and stood in front of the McCann's' shopping cart. Note Taylor may have actually put her hand on the cart.
The employees told McCann that her child had previously stolen from the store and was not allowed in the store. Defendant's employees told McCann
they were calling the police. Defendant did not actually ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
McCann was rewarded $20,000 in compensatory damages by the jury.
2. No. United States Court of Appeals For the First Circuit rejected Wal–Mart's appeal claiming that the plaintiff (McCann) did not prove false
imprisonment under Maine law and that the court's jury instructions on false imprisonment were a mistake.
3. No. United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuits rejected Wal–Mart's second appeal stating the district court should have charged that
"actual, physical restraint". Basically wanting a description of what was not confinement.
4. Yes. United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit accepted McCann's cross
–appeal. The defendant (Huges) denied McCann's son (Jonathan)
the bathroom. Wal–Mart's policy say's to ask prior shoplifters to leave the store and not to rather detain them. The action of Hughes's pointing her
finger at Jonathan accusing him of stealing was not considered reckless or negligent but "outrageous". Jonathan was awarded $10,000 and $5,000
awarded to his mother and sister each.
Reason:
The Maine District Court focused on McCann's claim that they were falsely imprisoned in the Wal–Mart store by Wal–Mart employees. The court
looked at elements of the tort of false imprisonment under Maine law. The defendant referenced to the police is enough to say reasonable people
would believe either that they would be restrained physically if they wanted to leave. The definition of false imprisonment can be

The Costs Of Loss Prevention Essay
3. The Different Costs of Loss Prevention Detailed below are the costs of LP and, from them, we can see that when weighed against the marginal
benefit, it is a relatively low cost because LP budgets in 2014 averaged to be less than 1% of total 2014 sales and LP prevented more than that in
shrink (Hollinger et al., 2015: 6). All of the percentages listed below are from the most recent National Retail Security Survey and they represent the
different percentages of the loss prevention budget (Hollinger et al., 2015: 8). This survey estimates that from the retail companies surveyed the mean
percentage of the LP budget spent on payroll expenses for the field and corporate members of the LP department is 0.22%, while their other
non–capital expenses excluding payroll, were, on average, 0.13% of the LP budget (Hollinger et al., 2015: 8). Last year, the retail companies in
this study spent on average 0.14% on capital expenses, such as EAS pedestals and CCTVs. Overall, retailers surveyed in 2014 reported an average
shrink of 1.38%, however, three out of ten (30.3%) reported a higher average shrink for 2014 (Hollinger et al., 2015: 7). The National Retail Security
Survey reports that the average shrinkage rates in 2014 decreased or remained flat for more than six out of ten retailers (Hollinger et al., 2015). This
demonstrates progress in implementing anti–theft measures, training, and internal processes because retailers continued to combat this problem with

Lily walks through the cafeteria at her school. Another girl walks in front of her and grabs a bag of chips. It seems normal until she puts the bag in
her coat pocket. Lily thinks about going up to her and asking her what she is doing but she hesitates. Afterall, she might not be stealing it. She could

may become addicted to shoplifting. After stealing once you will want to steal again. According to the National Association for Shoplifting

shoplifters say that the rush of shoplifting makes them want to do it again. Two young children, a hot summer day. They wait in the car. Little do they

Shoplifting Essay
Why do people shoplift? Is it out of necessity or compulsion? When I started this research project, I thought shoplifting was attributed to misguided
youngsters looking for a thrill, drug addicts desperate for their next fix, or individuals who fell on tough times. I never have imagined that there
could be any other reason for this behavior. As I peeled back the layers of this topic, it became a fascinating subject to research, from the ways people
shoplift, reasons for the behavior to the amount lost by retailers and shops on an annual basis. Definition of Shoplifting What is shoplifting? Some

entitlement or that they are owed something that justifies the theft. Kleptomania What is kleptomania? Psychologytoday.com defines kleptomania; "is
a condition in which an individual experiences a consistent impulse to steal items not needed for personal use or monetary value." So, in laymen
terms a kleptomaniac shoplifts due to a compulsive need to steal not out of necessity. In most cases a person suffering from kleptomania, does not
need or want the item lifted and can afford it. Remember the case of Winona Ryder in the early 2000s? So why do they do it? Research shows that,
the "experience" of shoplifting gives way to emotions the person seeks. From the anxiety leading up to the "rush" while committing the theft to the
sense of fulfillment once the act is completed. It is those range of emotions from fear to exhilaration that is addictive and the person wants to
experience it over and over again. Although this condition is compulsive, it is also worth noting that the urge to steal can come over the person without
warning.

Ethical Issues With Shoplifting
In today's world, many businesses are losing millions of dollars in revenue yearly because of shoplifting. Some business owners have tried to guard
against shoplifting by using surveillance and by using plain clothes lost prevention team members. The major problem arises when a member of the
lost prevention team suspects a customer is stealing. This paper will attempt to discuss the issues with false imprisonment, a business right to detain
individuals suspected of shoplifting and measurements a business can take to protect itself against a claim of false imprisonment.
"Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake" (Matthew 5:11 King
James Version). One of the greatest joy in the world is to have your freedom. The injustice act of holding someone against their own free will can be
considered false imprisonment. The most common issue with false imprisonment is first to prove a crime was committed. Just the other day, I watched
on television a former tennis player get arrested. James Blake, an African American, was arrested outside his hotel in New York. Mr. Blake did not

Description Of A Man 's Voice
We sat on a cheap wooden bench in the security room in the back of Lord and Taylor, our bags lay on their sides, the contents spilled across the
concrete floor. Little white tags hung from the fabric, a few seams were noticeably ripped along the side ribbing of the clothing. Computer screens
encompassed the room, the surveillance footage rotated intermittently from Camera 1 to Camera 2 to Dressing Room Camera. The man's voice was
barely audible through the wall behind me, as he called my parents and the authorities. He came back into the room with the woman who had grabbed
my arm as I exited the department store, announcing that the price for all of the products I had stolen totaled to approximately $1,300 – though he
hadn't calculated in the damages of the torn clothing where the security buttons were ripped out. My best friend, better known as my fellow thief,
called her mom to retrieve us. I used the thick silence of that car ride to prepare something mitigating to say to my mother. When I delicately,
respectfully, quietly entered the foyer, my mom sat waiting, drilling me with questions. As I entered the foyer, my mom, who had been undoubtedly
stewing in her own thoughts as she awaited my arrival, drilled me with questions. Why would you do this? Because it's fun. Who made you do this?
As if I can't make my own decisions and fuck up my life on my own. How long has this been going on? I told her once before but in reality it had been
going on for a while. WHY? Why not?

Evidence Led Crime Reduction Project
Evidence–Led Crime Reduction Project to Reduce Shoplifting
Shoplifting, once described as something committed by individuals who are too afraid to take other 'criminal risks' (Egan & Taylor, 2010); is a
widespread problem across England and Wales, which is slowly becoming known as a "common method of consumer product acquisition" (Cox, Cox
& Moschis 1990). There has been many methods introduced in order to tackle this growing issue, yet there is a lack of official crime reduction
guidelines to allow an effective and unanimous approach towards the successful reduction of shoplifting.
The scale of shoplifting in the United Kingdom in the past few years has changed to worrying levels, this is also true of the scope of shoplifting as
well. The Office of National Statistics have reported 321,008 police recorded shoplifting incidents from April 2013 to March 2014 (See Statistics
2010,), along with this articles have shown 34 of policed forces across the UK have presented a 6% increase in shoplifting (Pidd & Collier, 2014).
Such academics as Klemke (1978) have claimed that shoplifting significantly reduces with age (See Egan & Taylor, 2010), it seems to be a so–called
hobby that is popular amongst the younger generations, particularly adolescents.
Furthermore, official government crime statistics have shown that shoplifting rates were around three times higher in urban and city areas than in rural
areas with supermarkets experiencing shoplifting more than other retailers (Home

Why Are People Shoplifting?
Why are people shoplifting? Reason people may have shoplifted is the public, sibling, or wanting to gain attention. There are approximately 27
million shoplifters,25 percent are kids, and 75 percent are adults. An average shoplifter would steal at least twice a week. In my case shoplifting
occurs more than twice a week. I was never told if shoplifting was normal or not normal. Shoplifting made me happy whenever I shoplifted. I soon
learned shoplifting is a trouble maker and is not something to be proud of. Like a paralyzed person I stood and stare in dazed as I was ensured
shoplifting is normal. When we were younger, we used to go Target, Dollar Tree, and Wal

when we want something. Growing up with strict parent is difficult due to my mom, she is greedy with money. For example, whenever we go school
shopping each item is limited under seven dollar and two shirts pairing with two pants. With this situation my brother started to shoplift until one of
them got caught and no longer allow to enter the store. Soon, both of them are banned from the stores in town. Knowing shoplifting banned people,
my sister and I start to shoplift beginning somewhere small such as Dollar Tree. My sibling and I were at the age where glam to look like a model

Shoplifting Techniques Used By Shoplifters
9.16.What are the shoplifting techniques used by shoplifters?
Shoplifters use a variety of techniques, such as boosters, blockers, sweepers, walkers, diverters, and wearers.
Boosters are shoplifters who shove merchandise into concealed areas of parcels, and booster boxes are carefully construct that appear authentic, tightly
wrapped packages, but which contain trap doors that allow the shoplifters to slip merchandise into the boxes quickly and easily.
Blockers are to obstruct the vision of the store personnel while they or a partner shoplifts by simply stands between the salespersons and a shoplifting
partner.
Sweepers are simply brush merchandise off the counter into a shopping bag or some other type of container. They typically reach over a counter and
apparently, to examine a piece of merchandise but in the process of bringing their arm back they sweep merchandise off the counter and into the
container.
Walkers are shoplifters who have perfect the technique of walking naturally while carrying concealed merchandise between their legs. Shoplifters who
have developed this skill are capable of carrying merchandise both small items and large items such as personal care products, wines & beers.

Apprehension of this kind will strengthen the store's case against a shoplifter. In most cases, store security or management personnel will handle these
types of apprehensions. It is important for store employees to inform such personnel immediately in order apprehensions can be made before the

The Use Of Shoplifting And Its Effects On Society
Many people suffer from some kind of mental illness. Often when people are caught shoplifting they blame it on kleptomania or some other kind of
psychological disorder. Most people cannot fathom the idea of someone accidently placing some merchandise in their pockets and walking out of the
store without paying. This is why it is hard to tell if someone is lying when they say they have an illness. Not a lot of people call it a crime. Shoplifting
has been linked to impulse control, substance abuse, bipolar disorder, personality disorders and many others. Most individuals with an illness steal
as a way to cope with unwanted thoughts or feelings. People with an impulse disorder are unable to resist the urge to steal objects that they may not
even need. Even though kleptomania is one of the illnesses that cause people to shoplift, a vast majority of shoplifters are clinically depressed. "Only
very few of the many convicted shoplifters are referred to the psychiatrist", (Anonymous, 1955, pp. 1422). There are many 12 step programs available
for people that have shoplifting problems. No studies have been done to evaluate their success.
Peer pressure
Everyone knows what it feels like to want to fit in to a group and participate in some kind of dangerous activity in order to look cool. Peer pressure
can contribute to some of the shoplifting that happens today, especially in the younger crowd. Most people do not realize how serious shoplifting

Gucci has security officer in their store. In their spring inventory data he reported $5,000 worth of merchandise missing due to "unknown theft."
Although according to Lane, approximately $140,000 in merchandise is missing.
An unknown theft is someone that makes it out with the stolen item, a known theft gets caught. The "regulars" Lane was referring to are shoplifters
they see on tape frequently. "They wait till the security officer goes to lunch," said Lane rolling his eyes.
Most people that get caught have smaller items according the Lane and his loss prevention report. "Usually a handbag or wallet or small luggage, so

Although a $750 item might seem like a lot to the average American apparently shoplifters at Gucci have only the best taste. They come from the brand

Argument For Shoplifting
Scenario 1 – The actions I would take is tell that one friend to stop because we can get arrest for shoplifting. Also I would take actions in my own

what he is doing is wrong. I made that judgment because I wouldn't want my reputation to bad. If would of supported him in the act I would got arrest
myself and with peers. I wouldn't have the independence that my parents gave me. Also my judgment is right because I'm the responsible peer in the

that I would take is not to drink the alcohol. Because the alcohol very dangerous if drink too much of it. Also if you're underage you can get
consequents from police and parents. I made that judgment because I wouldn't do get drunk and act a fool. Also if show that I wouldn't drink then
my other friends would probably follow me if they don't get in trouble in the house party. One of the ways I would avoid the situation is to not drink.
Also I would tell my friends that I'm leaving and hopefully they would follow me if they self – discipline and self–esteem. Or I would go somewhere

Shoplifting When someone steals merchandise offered for sale in a retail store it is generically called shoplifting. To commit shoplifting one must

Children and elderly persons sometime steal without realizing they are committing a crime. In urban cities, it is not unusual to find a network of
"fences" who send out teams of shoplifters into specific retail stores to shoplift specific items, much like filling an order for a customer. The fences
only pay 10–20 cents on the dollar to the thieves and sometimes pay their room, board, and provide training on how to steal and defeat the anti–theft
technology. Some fences have been known to bail their workers out of jail when caught or provide for their legal defense. This creates a kind of
strange street loyalty much like the tale of Oliver Twist.
Theft from stores, including employee and vendor theft, cost retailers many billions of dollars per year. Independent retail studies* have estimated
theft from retail stores costs the American public 33.21 billion dollars per year. Depending on the type of retail store, retail inventory shrinkage ranges
from .5% – 6% of gross sales with the average falling around 1.75%. Whole retail store chains have gone out of business due to their inability to
control retail theft losses. And worse yet, the cost of these losses are passed on to us...the consumer.
Shoplifting losses will vary by store type, but can account for about one–third of the total inventory shrinkage. It is estimated that shoplifting

The History Of Shoplifting

  • 1. The History Of Shoplifting I'm not sure I know anyone with an extensive criminal history. But from the people I knew in high school, some of my peers engaged in drug dealing (drugs themselves), shoplifting... the list goes on. I feel like if I knew them better I could say more about their behavior. From what I remember about those people I once knew is that they were fairly closed off. The only people they talked to were people they trusted, and often that meant that they were involved in criminal acts as well. They were not welcome to outsiders and seemed very hostile. If my little brother were to shoplift, I'd like to imagine I'd recognize the signs that is acting out. I'd like to think I'd be worried, but I'd also have his best interest in mind. • 2. Letter Of The Case Of Law INTEROFFICE MEMORANDUM OF LAW TO:Sara Lee, Attorney FROM: Donna Nasser, Paralegal DATE: October 17, 2008 RE: People v. Sam Kant OFFICE FILE NUMBER:HQ 22467 DOCKET NUMBER:09HQ9456 STATEMENT OF ASSIGNMENT: Sam Kant has requested that our office represent him in his defense againstshoplifting charges. FACTS: Our client, Sam Kant, was arrested for shoplifting at Bilmart, a national department store. At his wife's request, Mr. Kant went to Bilmart on Wednesday, October 20, 2008, and purchased a case of six 4 oz. cans of Hoover's Baked Beans with Bacon. Upon returning home, his wife chastised him for once again failing to purchase what she had requested. Apparently, Mrs. Kant can't stand the taste of Hoover's Beans, but is very fond of the Handell's brand, and was planning to serve them to her book club when she hosted them for lunch the following afternoon. Mrs. Kant ordered her husband to return to Bilmart to exchange the Hoover's beans for Handell's beans. Upon arrival at the store early the next morning, Mr. Kant found that the line for customer service was extremely long due to Bilmart's annual sponsorship of a major community food drive. In an effort to save time, and thinking the line might be shorter upon his return, Mr. Kant placed the case of Hoover's beans into a shopping cart, made his way through the store to the bean shelf, and then added the case of Handell's beans to the cart. However, upon his return, the line had not diminished and it ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Don’T Steal. This Principle Of Human Behavior Has Been Don't steal. This principle of human behavior has been widely held for centuries. The principle prominently appears in the Ten Commandments in the Old Testament's Book of Exodus. Chapter 20 addresses the followers of God and proclaims, "You shall not steal" directly following "You shall not murder" and "You shall not commit adultery" (Exodus 20.13–15). Thou shall not steal is not only prominent in the Bible and the Christian religion, but it is widely maintained in cultures around the world, specifically the United States, as a standard of honesty. Throughout the US, federal, state, and local laws prohibit stealing or the act of theft, and techniques such as security personnel and cameras have been employed to thwart stealing minor items ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The answer in the majority of situations, is yes. Statistically, 10 million people have been caught shoplifting in the past five years. However, the rate of being caught is only 1 in 48 shoplifts, and caught shoplifters are only turned over to the police 50 percent of the time (NASP). This rate is not high, but 10 million peoples' lives have been affected. Overall the risk of getting caught is there, but not exorbitant for the non–habitual shoplifter. Other costs beyond those posed to the agent shoplifter include criminal justice procedures and the costs of the stolen good to the vendor. The criminal justice costs are countered by fines assessed to those taken in by police. However, the costs imposed to a store are not countered, and amount to $13 billion in goods per year, or $35 million per day (NASP). Although that cost is not small, it is inflated by the 3 percent of shoplifters who are considered professionals and contribute to 10 percent of the $13 billion. Professional shoplifting is surely immoral, so we will discount the number by such. Thus, the cost of solo shoplifters is roughly $11.7 billion (NASP). This cost is clearly large and amounts to the majority of the costs of shoplifting outside of the risk to the shoplifters themselves. The sole benefit of shoplifting is obviously the gain of whatever good is shoplifted, which is a median value of $37.50 (NASP). The good could range from something the shoplifter ... • 4. Shoplifting Research Paper Shoplifting is a large concern of any retail store, including Rite Aid pharmacy. Employees are trained through continuing education what to look for when customers are possibly shoplifting. Customers with backpacks are not allowed to wander around the store. Backpack may be held behind the front register for customers. Security measures such as vault boxes are used on high risk items, and high priced items are kept at the front of the store behind the front registers. Employees are made aware monthly of the most shoplifted items that month in every district of Rite Aid Pharmacies. Employees can then monitor those specific items for possible shoplifting. Security announcements may be made over the store intercom to alert employees of possible shoplifting activities and to scan all aisles. Employees have all bags checks and recipients from purchases made verified by a manager or supervisor at the end of every shift. Bags and purses are not permitted to be store in the pharmacy. Employees are trained about what POS does, what it tracks and so forth when it comes to internal theft. Rite Aid does not shy away from telling their employees they are watching them. • 5. Pros And Cons Of Shoplifting With the increase of population in the United States, more people will be going to stores and buying items they need. Dan White states that it's acceptable for racial profiling to exist, for the businesses economic survival. From the actions of others in previous times, employees keep a cautious eye on customers from certain ethnic groups. This kind of security is often done when someone of color, black or hispanic, male and female, comes into a store. They're often followed throughout the store and then asked to be searched. In order to protect those products, they must be cautious of people, making sure they don't shoplift. The Pros And Cons Of Shoplifting On May 8, 2018, at approximately 1634 hours, I Deputy Sheriff Javion Brown responded to Winn Dixie, 100 International Parkway, Lake Mary, unincorporated Seminole County in reference to an over with shoplifting. Upon arrival, I made contact with Managers Ashlee Beckham and Edward Bowers, who provided me with a sworn written statement. • 7. Shoplifting Research Paper Would you like to have someone snatch an item from your store?Tracking customers are becoming more and more popular for stores in the United States. Currently, retailers are using cameras and smartphones to learn about their customers' shopping experience and tendencies. Critics may argue that spying on customers is creepy, but it prevents shoplifting and gets customers good deals and coupons. First and foremost, by using cameras and smartphones prevents shoplifting. In the article How and Why Retail Stores Are Spying on You in paragraph nine, the author states "The system can also nab shoplifters." By using this system more people will be aware that there are cameras all around them. In that case, there will be many fewer shoplifters. Also, in paragraph eight of the same article, the author states, "There are even mannequins whose eyes are cameras that detect the age, sex, ethnicity, and facial expressions of passers–by...your face and vehicle license plate can be linked. " By having these cameras all over in the most imperceptible places, people attempting to steal will get caught. In that case, if more of the customers hear... • 8. The Rebel Sell: If We Hate Consumerism Culture jamming even relates to shoplifting; shoplifting can be seen as a manifestation of culture jamming. Rachel Shteir in the chapter Robin Hoods 2.0 explores shoplifting as a cultural phenomenon. There are many reasons why people shoplift such as economic dislocation, compensation, addiction, or entitlement. The main reason is to steal from big corporations because shoplifters think that they are doing a right thing and it is sabotage against big corporations. Shteir says, "Shoplifting from a locally owned place was seen as a really shitty thing to do, but shoplifting a toothbrush from Wal–Mart was harmless at worst" (65). Shoplifting is used against corporations who abuse their employees because corporations do not care about unethical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The movie expresses a concern for growing consumerism and the power of media. It is a critique of today's society and rejection of material possession and consumerism. The narrator (unnamed) is portrayed as a compulsive buyer who values money and materialist possessions. He is trying to live a life that he has seen in advertisements. He defines himself by what he owns, he would "flip through catalogs and wonder, what kind of dining set defines me as a person?" and shopping has replaced his sexual stimulation because he "became a slave to the Ikea Nesting Impulse." He is seduced by ads, he measures his life's value by things he owns, and he cannot escape the consumer culture. The objects that he buys do not make him happy or give him satisfaction. The narrator's view is changed when he meets Tyler who sabotages consumerism and is a culture jammer. He jams consumer culture by pissing in the soup served to rich people, attaching scenes of porn into family movies, and making soap out of fat. Tyler is a founder of fight club where those men try to put away their identity because they feel that they are turned down or neglected by the system. In order to live, we need to strip the brands off from our bodies, social rules, and expectations. Tyler created a Project Mayhem the illustration of culture subversion in which they fight and rebel against the system, society, and culture. Smashing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It is considered as a significant problem adversely affecting both the establishment or store and consumers. To increase the effort with the application of target hardening or by controlling the sections of the store, to increase the risk by extending the guardianship of the store, to reduce the rewards by concealing or removing of items, the provocations might be decreased by polite services, and the excuses might be removed by posting instructions or setting rules (Cornish & Clarke, 2003). According to Farrington et al. (1993), electronic tagging and store redesign are efficient in decreasing the cause of shoplifting and the deployment of uniformed guard had no effect on shoplifting (Farrington et al, 1993). In the study of Poyner (1993), he group in six general categories the crime prevention techniques these are " campaigns and publicity, policing and other surveillance, environmental design or improvement, social and community services, security devices, target removal or modification". In his study, about half of the measures evaluated were found to be effective. Larceny: Theft and Extremely Important Resources Essay Larceny is defined as the wrongful taking and carrying away of the personal goods of another from his or her possession with intent to convert them to the takers own use. To bluntly say it, larceny is stealing from others. No matter what the motives or reasons behind stealing are, it is still wrong. I imagine there is a multitude of motives for someone to convince himself or herself that it is worth the risk to steal something. Some other people might also not have the conscience to feel wrong for stealing. A large part of this is because people do not understand who or what they are harming when they steal. When someone decides to steal, they are causing the police to take time out of their day to deal with minor issues. While this happens, there are other important issues occurring where people's lives could be at risk and police resources are needed. Shoplifters need to think about how they are affecting their community's safety, not just theirs. Petty crimes like larceny are a burden on police and it is a citizen's moral duty to understand who they are hurting when they steal. Along with the police being misused, court systems are also using their time and effort for petty things. Millions of people volunteer or are paid to bring justice to those who break the law. Although stealing is extremely wrong and it is an important issue to be addressed, a court's time and effort would be better spent on dealing with bigger issues. Once again, when someone shoplifts they don't understand who they are hurting and the burden they are placing on a community. These issues need to be more focused on, and the harms they cause people and the community need to be highlighted. Along with a community being hurt, his or her actions negatively affect those personally close to the shoplifter as well. This proximity brings together the offenders and targets at the same time and space. It is also important to note that the data packet specified the majority of the juvenile crimes recorded in 2013 were occurring on Fridays (CEBCP, 2013). However, there was no consistent monthly pattern that could be determined. We believe the juveniles would offend on Friday due to the release of school for the weekend. Because there were multiple schools within the hotspot, there would be a large convergence of juveniles at or around the same time. Also, there were multiple transit stops and paths within the hotspot. Crime might have been exacerbated by the transient nature of the area. There was recently a large event that brought approximately 1,000 people to the area (CEBCP, 2013). This would also result in a large convergence of people along the bus stops and bring strangers to the area, aggravating the current crime problem. However, Group 2 specifically focused on the juveniles who were shoplifting clothing from the nearby stores. Why is the Problem Occurring? Our group analyzed the hotspot through two different theories: Routine Activity Theory and Crime Pattern Theory. Originally, we were only going to use Routine Activity Theory to explain why the crime was occurring, but we could not sufficiently explain the crime without including Crime Pattern Theory. The Cost Of Retail Growth When people think of the word shrink they often refer to what happens when you first leave a new shirt in the dryer and it comes out two times smaller than when you first purchased it. People in retail, however, refer to shrink as "the portion of inventory that gets lost, damaged or stolen" (Kokemuller). Now that you know the basic definition of shrink, what causes it and how significant are the losses involved in shrink. Retail shrinkage is calculated by a percentage based on the value of lost inventory, divided by the sales in the same period. For example, assume that the value of loss goods in a period equals $30,000 and in that same period sales were at $600,000. To calculate the shrink you would take the total losses (30,000), divided by the total amount of sales (600,000), the total losses for that period would be .05 or 5 percent (Kokemuller.) The company's shrink would be five dollars per one–hundred dollars of total sales. So what exactly are the causes of shrink and what are the estimated losses nationally? The main causes of retail shrink are employee theft and shoplifting, followed by accidental damages. 43.7 percent of all shrinkage in 2010, was credited to employee theft, one–third or 32.6 percent of shrinkage was caused by customer shoplifting (Kokemuller). The Different Costs of Loss Prevention Detailed below are the costs of LP and, from them, we can see that when weighed against the marginal benefit, it is a relatively low cost because LP budgets in 2014 averaged to be less than 1% of total 2014 sales and LP prevented more than that in shrink (Hollinger et al., 2015: 6). All of the percentages listed below are from the most recent National Retail Security Survey and they represent the different percentages of the loss prevention budget (Hollinger et al., 2015: 8). This survey estimates that from the retail companies surveyed the mean percentage of the LP budget spent on payroll expenses for the field and corporate members of the LP department is 0.22%, while their other non–capital expenses excluding payroll, were, on average, 0.13% of the LP budget (Hollinger et al., 2015: 8). Overall, retailers surveyed in 2014 reported an average shrink of 1.38%, however, three out of ten (30.3%) reported a higher average shrink for 2014 (Hollinger et al., 2015: 7). The National Retail Security Survey reports that the average shrinkage rates in 2014 decreased or remained flat for more than six out of ten retailers (Hollinger et al., 2015). This paper will attempt to discuss the issues with false imprisonment, a business right to detain individuals suspected of shoplifting and measurements a business can take to protect itself against a claim of false imprisonment. "Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake" (Matthew 5:11 King James Version). One of the greatest joy in the world is to have your freedom. The injustice act of holding someone against their own free will can be considered false imprisonment. The most common issue with false imprisonment is first to prove a crime was committed. Just the other day, I watched on television a former tennis player get arrested. • 29. Description Of A Man 's Voice We sat on a cheap wooden bench in the security room in the back of Lord and Taylor, our bags lay on their sides, the contents spilled across the concrete floor. Little white tags hung from the fabric, a few seams were noticeably ripped along the side ribbing of the clothing. Computer screens encompassed the room, the surveillance footage rotated intermittently from Camera 1 to Camera 2 to Dressing Room Camera. The man's voice was barely audible through the wall behind me, as he called my parents and the authorities. He came back into the room with the woman who had grabbed my arm as I exited the department store, announcing that the price for all of the products I had stolen totaled to approximately $1,300 – though he hadn't calculated in the damages of the torn clothing where the security buttons were ripped out. My best friend, better known as my fellow thief, called her mom to retrieve us. I used the thick silence of that car ride to prepare something mitigating to say to my mother. When I delicately, respectfully, quietly entered the foyer, my mom sat waiting, drilling me with questions. As I entered the foyer, my mom, who had been undoubtedly stewing in her own thoughts as she awaited my arrival, drilled me with questions. Why would you do this? Because it's fun. Who made you do this? As if I can't make my own decisions and fuck up my life on my own. How long has this been going on? I told her once before but in reality it had been going on for a while. WHY? Why not? ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 30. Evidence Led Crime Reduction Project Evidence–Led Crime Reduction Project to Reduce Shoplifting Shoplifting, once described as something committed by individuals who are too afraid to take other 'criminal risks' (Egan & Taylor, 2010); is a widespread problem across England and Wales, which is slowly becoming known as a "common method of consumer product acquisition" (Cox, Cox & Moschis 1990). There has been many methods introduced in order to tackle this growing issue, yet there is a lack of official crime reduction guidelines to allow an effective and unanimous approach towards the successful reduction of shoplifting. The scale of shoplifting in the United Kingdom in the past few years has changed to worrying levels, this is also true of the scope of shoplifting as well. The Office of National Statistics have reported 321,008 police recorded shoplifting incidents from April 2013 to March 2014 (See Statistics 2010,), along with this articles have shown 34 of policed forces across the UK have presented a 6% increase in shoplifting (Pidd & Collier, 2014). Such academics as Klemke (1978) have claimed that shoplifting significantly reduces with age (See Egan & Taylor, 2010), it seems to be a so–called hobby that is popular amongst the younger generations, particularly adolescents. Furthermore, official government crime statistics have shown that shoplifting rates were around three times higher in urban and city areas than in rural areas with supermarkets experiencing shoplifting more than other retailers (Home ... • 32. Why Are People Shoplifting? Why are people shoplifting? Reason people may have shoplifted is the public, sibling, or wanting to gain attention. There are approximately 27 million shoplifters,25 percent are kids, and 75 percent are adults. An average shoplifter would steal at least twice a week. In my case shoplifting occurs more than twice a week. I was never told if shoplifting was normal or not normal. Shoplifting made me happy whenever I shoplifted. I soon learned shoplifting is a trouble maker and is not something to be proud of. Like a paralyzed person I stood and stare in dazed as I was ensured shoplifting is normal. When we were younger, we used to go Target, Dollar Tree, and Wal –Mart every weekend. We were like a baby who cry in need when we want something. Growing up with strict parent is difficult due to my mom, she is greedy with money. For example, whenever we go school shopping each item is limited under seven dollar and two shirts pairing with two pants. With this situation my brother started to shoplift until one of them got caught and no longer allow to enter the store. Soon, both of them are banned from the stores in town. Knowing shoplifting banned people, my sister and I start to shoplift beginning somewhere small such as Dollar Tree. • 35. The Use Of Shoplifting And Its Effects On Society Many people suffer from some kind of mental illness. Often when people are caught shoplifting they blame it on kleptomania or some other kind of psychological disorder. Most people cannot fathom the idea of someone accidently placing some merchandise in their pockets and walking out of the store without paying. This is why it is hard to tell if someone is lying when they say they have an illness. Not a lot of people call it a crime. Shoplifting has been linked to impulse control, substance abuse, bipolar disorder, personality disorders and many others. Most individuals with an illness steal as a way to cope with unwanted thoughts or feelings. People with an impulse disorder are unable to resist the urge to steal objects that they may not even need. Even though kleptomania is one of the illnesses that cause people to shoplift, a vast majority of shoplifters are clinically depressed. "Only very few of the many convicted shoplifters are referred to the psychiatrist", (Anonymous, 1955, pp. 1422). There are many 12 step programs available for people that have shoplifting problems. No studies have been done to evaluate their success. Children and elderly persons sometime steal without realizing they are committing a crime. In urban cities, it is not unusual to find a network of "fences" who send out teams of shoplifters into specific retail stores to shoplift specific items, much like filling an order for a customer. The fences only pay 10–20 cents on the dollar to the thieves and sometimes pay their room, board, and provide training on how to steal and defeat the anti–theft technology. Some fences have been known to bail their workers out of jail when caught or provide for their legal defense. This creates a kind of strange street loyalty much like the tale of Oliver Twist. Theft from stores, including employee and vendor theft, cost retailers many billions of dollars per year. Independent retail studies* have estimated theft from retail stores costs the American public 33.21 billion dollars per year. Depending on the type of retail store, retail inventory shrinkage ranges from .5% – 6% of gross sales with the average falling around 1.75%. Whole retail store chains have gone out of business due to their inability to control retail theft losses. And worse yet, the cost of these losses are passed on to us...the consumer.
