If you work in the financial industry like us, you know that every day money used to buy, sell and exploit people is flowing through our banks’ systems, accounts and ecosystems. Modern slavery and human trafficking generate an estimate of $150 billion per year – possibly more. But we cannot see it. The traces of human trafficking and modern slavery are hidden in terabytes of data isolated in different systems. Even just planning to surface that data costs hundreds of thousands of pounds, dollars, euros, and needs days, months or years, that we don’t have. This is why we have developed the RedCompass RedFlag Accelerator.
3. 3
According to the International Labour Organisation
approximately 40m people
are trapped in the human trafficking cycle.

5. 5
The primary motivating factor for
trafficking in human beings is financial
gain.
The $150bn annual profit for criminals is
being processed, in some form, by banks.
Flowing through our systems, our
accounts, our ecosystems. Way more than
the profit of Apple, Google and Starbucks.
6. 6
A comprehensive framework
for combating human
trafficking is based on:
• Prosecution
• Protection
• Prevention
• Partnerships
7. 7
But Prosecution requires
evidence.
How do we see the wood for
the trees in the billions of lines
of data sitting on our systems
and truly understand what it is
telling us….if only we could
and did look close enough?
8. 8
No other industry is better positioned
than the Financial Sector
Human trade is hidden in plain view in terabytes of data
stored in our banks systems. And yet, only 1% of MSHT
proceeds are detected and investigated by law
enforcement.
RedCompass want to help banks to see the signs.

She travels willingly to the new country. Once
she arrives, it’s time for a reality check. First
her passport is taken from her – as a safety
measure. Traffickers tell her that she owes
them a lot money for the travel arrangements
and accommodation.
She does not have the money and cannot pay,
so she is told to work in a local bar to earn it.
It soon becomes clear that it is not just a job
in a bar. Her new job turns out to be
prostitution.
Traffickers advertise her services on local
adult websites. She is forced to have sex with
many customers for money and then to pass
the cash to traffickers.
