1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms
and conventions of real media products?
Question 1
2. My music video follows some conventions of the Indie/Alternative genre, especially through the use of mise en scene. The video is set in a variety of places such as an
arcade, a festival, holiday destinations, concerts and also a few shots in cars and of busy roads/urban city to give a sense of free teenage lifestyle. The costume within
mise en scene is extremely representative of the indie genre, with patterned tops and clothing with juxtaposing colours – this is often used as stereotypically the indie
target audience are known for being quite quirky. These settings and unique style of clothing are used in conventional indie music videos.
Another convention of music videos are the use of a performance element. I have used this conventional element in my media video. This was shot in a studio, when
directing I chose a black background as it highlights the makeup and hair style used on the artist. I chose to purposely highlight this aspect of the artist as many young
teenagers (my target audience) often aspire to look like their favourite singers.

3. With regards to Blumler and Katz uses and gratifications audience theory, one convention of music videos is that the audience are able to personally
identify with the video and also there are personal relationships within the narrative in which the audience can relate too. This convention is used in
my music video, there are many characters introduced in my video as the main female protagonist has a large amount of friends. There is also an
element or romance and love interest in the video. The audience will be able to identify with characters and the narrative as there are many
locations used which are stereotypical ‘fun’ things for teenagers to do e.g – the arcade, festivals. They can also identify with the character
relationships.

4. A narrative in a music video is
conventionally used to create a response
from the audience, the narrative
traditionally follows a simplistic storyline
with a beginning, middle and end. They tend
to use Todorov’s narrative theory although
we have challenged this convention in our
music video. As my target audience are
stereotypically identified as ‘unique’ types
of people and like a very distinctive quirky
style I have used a different/ unique
narrative style in my video. This is a
fragmented narrative, the video begins full
of memories etc and ends in present tense
with the older couple ‘’no longer young and
beautiful’’. A variety of juxtaposing short
clips are placed together to form a story and
create a response of nostalgia for the
audience. This is further emphasised
through the editing use of editing which has
been stylised in a vintage way so that it
seems set in the past. This therefore creates
the idea these short clips are memories of
teenage lifestyle, allowing my video to
appeal to my teenage target audience and
also m secondary older target audience.
Some examples of these vintage effects are
the black and white edit, a soft border and
noise and grain effect.

Follows todorov’s narrative theory
1: Equilibrium = Love
relationship
2: Distruption = Both drug
users
3: Recognition = Robbing a
supermarket, male
protagonist is shot
4: Repair =
Girlfriend/Friends give
him drugs for pain
5: Restoration = Managed to
take a lot of money, free.
5. Cinematography
In post-production of music videos a professional camera is often used which gives the video extreme high definition and has a flawless effect over the whole video
although this has been a convention in which I have developed in my media product by using experimental cinematography. This means I have used a variety of camera
equipment such as an Iphone 5, Iphone 4, Sony Ericson mobile, Nikon 50mm camera and a cannon with a prime lens. By using a diverse range of camera equipment it
allows multiple effects to be used in the video – for example: the cannon with the prime lens gives a soft effect which was used on the performance element on my
video. This eliminated blemishes from the artists face and gave her a ‘perfect/flawless’ look. When some events happen such as concerts, they have been taken on a
mobile phone which gives a sense of realism – this is also hand held camera which further highlights the theme of realism and memories I intended to create.
