Session Singers and Musicians in Sequim, Washington
At Jeremy Cays Productions we appreciate that your songs may require extra input from backing
singers and session musicians, and we have many at our disposal who can provide your recording

backing vocalists because it is an entirely different discipline. We are happy to call on our team of
musicians to bring their skills to bear and help give your song an extra dimension.
Our instrumentalists include some of the most experienced musicians in the area. They play a wide
range of instruments including fiddle, electric and acoustic guitar, cello, violin, mandolin, drums,

We reckon her greatest asset in the recording studio, is her ability to create perfect backing vocals.
She has an uncanny ability to perfectly match the lead singer's tone, timing, inflections, and vowel
pronunciations, all of which help create harmonies that blend beautifully and keep the focus on the
lead singer. Her rates are $50 an hour.

"Crazy Face" Van Morrison, Music Review Essay
"Crazy Face" The song I chose to review is "Crazy Face" by Van Morrison on the album "His Band
and the Street Choir". The tone color of this song is upbeat and jazzy, not so much inspirational, but
laid back and pleasant. The tempo is based around an 8th note signature, mostly displayed by the
Hi–hat in what I would classify as allegretto. The instruments involved in this song are; a piano, a
standard drum set most likely a five piece with a standard 2 toms maybe 3, bass drum, snare, ride
symbol, and a two crash symbols, an acoustic guitar, a banjo, a ukulele, a mandolin, an electric base,
an organ, a saxophone, and last of all Van Morrison's drunken voice. The form of this song is
extremely simple yet very interesting and not common ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The bridge is a 45 second saxophone solo. The rest of the instruments play the same verse over and
over in harmony, with cymbals and stressed guitar chords on the accent between the verses. All of
this is played underneath the saxophone which is practically singing its own improved song, which
varies from hitting high notes in the register to low arpeggios in the lower register. The saxophone
plays call and response with itself, which leads the listener to believe there are two saxophones,
when in reality one saxophone is dueling with itself. During the bridge not only is the saxophone
emphasized, but the organ plays the bass line on higher octaves on the same dynamics as the
saxophone, so the bridge focuses on the polyphonic relationship between the sax and the organ.
After the bridge a sporadic drum fill opens up for the first verse of the song (A) which is repeated
just as the first time but more emphasized, especially the vocals. After the verse the chorus follows,
almost identical sounding to the first chorus just with more emphasized vocals. The song then ends
with an abrupt note, typical for jazzy

Corelli's Mandolin by Louis de Bernieres Essay
Corelli's Mandolin by Louis de Bernieres
Carlo was fighting for Italy, while Mandras was in the Greek army.
Both of the characters experienced a lot during the war. Nevertheless everything Mandras and Carlo
fought on opposite sides. What does it say about the novels moral scheme, that the sufferings of
ordinary people on both sides are recounted in detail? Consider these two characters but also other
"moral" issues raised in the novel so far.
Mandras and Carlo fought on opposite sides. Their experiences and feelings through out the war are
recounted to the readers in a lot of details. And even though they were "enemies", their stories are
very similar, as if the author is talking about the same man. This style of ... Show more content on

(p. 29). He wants to join the army because he is a homosexual and he wants to be able to love and
be loved, or the least to be able to impress someone and get his admiration. At the same time
Mandras also wants to join the army, and his reasons come from love as well. He wants to go to war,
because this way he feels he will be able to do something important, and thus by the end of it, he
would be good enough to marry Pelagia. "I will never be a man until
I've done something important, something great, something I can live with, something to be
esteemed [...] no man is a man until he has been a soldier." (p. 80). As we can see from the quote,
Mandras basically wants to gain the same things by joining the army: esteem and honour.
He wants to impress people by his actions and show that his life is not pointless, that he risked
himself in order to defend his country and its people.
The next similarity between the characters is what they have found out about the war, their
disappointment and despair. Both of them realised that war is not at all as what they thought it
would be. After Carlo and his friend Francesco had their first atrocity, they no longer felt excited by
the war. "We felt no triumph. We felt exhausted and

Analysis of Fernando Botero's Style
Fernando Botero's style is arguably one of the most distinctive of artists still alive today. Embracing
a sweeping aesthetic that attempts to celebrate the vivacity of life with seemingly disproportionately
enlarged figures, Botero's style celebrates an assortment of riotous colors while alternating between
scenes of his native Columbia and social–political themes (Haas). An examination of the
development of Botero's style indicates that it has a number of disparate sources and influences
which informed the artist, who ultimately refined and merged them with characteristics from his
own life to render works that are inimitably his own. An analysis of key works of artistry from
Botero support the hypothesis that his larger–than–life style of painting and sculpture was conceived
of as a means of conveying the richness and complexity of the events, feelings and actions that
constitute the scope of life itself.
Botero's merging of different styles of art to form his own is probably best documented by the
formal training he received in this discipline. He travelled extensively throughout Europe, Mexico,
and the United States while attending educational institutions and absorbing local methods and
themes of art work. Although he studied at Sapin's San Fernando Academy and spent a substantial
amount of time in Paris, it was his education at Florence's Academy of San Marcos would create the
most significant impact on his future creations. The artist stayed in Italy from 1953 to

Bluegrass Research Paper
Bluegrass Bluegrass began originating its style and form during the 1930s and 1940s, although, the
term itself was not strongly used until the late 1950s. Bluegrass is vastly popular throughout the
southeastern United States. The music originates from a white, rural music tradition. The style is
drawn from Appalachian–derived music that has integrated a mixture of African American and
Anglo–Irish musical impacts. This genre is characterized by virtuosic performances with acoustic
implements. The term bluegrass itself refers to an acoustic string–band melody. Its vocal style
stresses a very high–pitched tone. Most commonly, the instruments involved with the sting–band
can range between the mandolin, banjo, bass, guitar and fiddle. There is ... Show more content on

Personal Narrative: My Hispanic Heritage Shaped My Life
What makes me unique is that I am not afraid of failure. When I set a goal I do not focus on whether
I might or might not be successful; I concentrate on doing my best and putting all of my effort into
the task. What separates me from others is the adversity I've been through, my diverse skills,
leadership abilities, my contribution to the community, and my work ethic. My Hispanic heritage
shaped my life because I of what my family has overcome. My grandparents from both of my
parent's sides of the family picked cotton and vegetables in the fields to help their families. I have
learned from my parents and grandparents stories that it is worth working hard in school to obtain a
good job in the future. Both of my parents went to college and they have been a great inspiration to
me. Not all of my aunts and uncles have had good jobs. Some of them only graduated from high
school. For example, my Uncle Romeo become a construction worker after he graduated from high
school. It is difficult for him to buy his kids what they want and need, and even provide for himself.
Although he is a diligent individual, he wishes that he could have been able to attend college and
have a different career. He has used ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Analysis Of The Poem ' The Ballad Of Jed Clampett '
Originally named The Muleskinners, The Hamilton County Bluegrass band was founded by a group
of university students in Auckland in 1962.[9] For the young members, their first encounter with
bluegrass would be the theme song "The Ballad of Jed Clampett" from the television show The
Beverly Hillbillies. The show was one of the few American shows airing on New Zealand television
at the time. The Flatt and Scruggs theme tune and Scruggs style banjo influenced player Paul
Trenwith, who said "that's how I wanted to learn banjo, and we found out there was a whole music
genre that went with that, so we chased that up."[10] Television was one of the key ways that the
bluegrass genre was and still is transmitted internationally. The dominance of ... Show more content

The albums of the Hamilton County Bluegrass Band included typical bluegrass fare, recording
covers of genre pioneers Bill Monroe and Flatt & Scruggs. Their concert repertoire included covers
of bluegrass standards such as "Salty Dog Blues", "Uncle Pen", "Kentucky Waltz" and "Orange
Blossom Special," a song for which they became known for.[13] These songs referenced rural life
and locations, whether explicitly such as "Kentucky Waltz" or within the lyrics, referencing hunting
or barn dances. In 1967, the band performed Reno and Smiley's "Barefoot Nellie," a song with rural
themes and humorous lyrics such as "Nellie put on her Sunday dress Thought that it would look the
best Made out of an old feed sack Cow feed wrote on the back"[14] Adopting an American accent,
the recording of "Barefoot Nellie" features high lonesome harmony and solos on the banjo,
mandolin and fiddle, with band members displaying virtuosic mastery of their instruments. These
covers featured on their albums amongst traditional songs and an assortment of their own original
music, however much of their original music didn't emerge until their 1971 album For You. Most
likely due to the obscurity of the albums at the time, there is little to no lyrical or musical
information or description to be found regarding these original recordings. The band also looked to
other influences, recording their own interpretations of popular songs, such

A Comparison Of Catch 22 And Captain Corelli's Mandolin
In Catch 22 and Captain Corelli's Mandolin, both authors suggest the unsettling idea that life holds
no universal conclusion because in actuality life is the continual clash of absolutes and therefore
refuses 'the reader the comfort of closure'. Both novels handle the difficult subject of war using
similar postmodernist techniques to display it, such as fragmented narratives. However their
intentions and ideas of war are extremely different creating interesting comparisons.
De Bernier's novel, Captain Corelli's Mandolin, published in 1994, but set during the second world
war, is composed with multiple narratives, far from the omniscient narrator often found in 19th
century literature. Instead De Bernier's uses an amalgamation of formats ... Show more content on

When considering war we believe there is a good and a bad side, in the Second World War most
would conceive the Nazis to unequivocally be the enemy and therefore immoral. Perhaps this is why
the chapter 'The Good Nazi', in Captain Corelli's Mandolin, immediately unsettles the reader as
there is no irony in this statement. De Berneires presents Gunter Weber full of innocence and as
someone who has simply absorbed the propaganda of the Nazis. We see his innocence portrayed in
'The Good Nazi'; 'Weber was a twenty–two year old man and had never seen a woman naked
before...Weber was a still a virgin'. The simplicity of De Bernier's language here reflects the
simplicity of Weber as a character. Weber causes us to question the limitations of our own heroism
or our capacity to see beyond propaganda. It could be argued that rather than the 'good Nazi' he
represents the ordinary Nazi, he accepts what the state has told him as that is the easiest path. By
presenting us with someone who is ordinary it unsettles the reader as it draws a bond between the
reader and the character. Rather than blaming and seeing him as monstrous and all the other
preconceptions society holds against Nazis, we instead see qualities of ordinary humanity and
ourselves in him. Dr. Iannis' statement, 'there would be no tyranny, Captain, and no wars, if minions
did not ignore their conscience'. Is conceivably there to further

War is cruel. The Vietnam War, which lasted for 21 years from 1954 to 1975, was a horrific and

During both wars, thousands of millions of soldiers and civilians had been killed. Especially during
the Second World War, numerous innocent people were sent into concentration camps, or some

a catchy plot and the story telling is repetitive even though it share similar background being in the

Music Of Peru Analysis
–James N. Music of Peru
The music of Peru is a fusion of sounds and different style of playing that originated from Spain,
Africa and the indigenous people of South America. This influence of the European and later Africa
music can be seen and heard in the different sounds throughout Peru. The Typical instruments used
are, the flute and the antara or zampoña, which is an instrument made of reeds and looks similar to
the instrument played by the Greek god Pan. The most common musical instrument is the guitar. It
has several forms, the box and the traditional guitar, which in Peru has also a smaller variant, known
as the "charango" and mandolin.

These slaves were not allowed to play drums, so they used the boxes and shipping crates as

in numerous jazz bands in the US like the Yellow Jackets, played with Chick Corea and many
others. While his sound is more Afro–Cuban the cajon is uniquely Peru. Since the early 1980s he

Advertising Guitars with Suicide and Sex
Ads are made to grab a certain audience and make that audience relate to the specific ad or make
them want to go out and purchase the product that is being promoted. Many ads are trying to sell
specific items; but if a person really analyses the ad, the company is selling or promoting more than
one item.
In this ad the company Gibson is promoting a specific guitar to be sold. In the ad there is a six–
string, electric guitar standing up with the wording, "If this doesn't get you laid you should just
commit suicide." In the lower right hand corner of the ad, the company's name Gibson is printed.
This six–string guitar is popular for beginning music artists. In this ad the company Gibson is using
pathos, ethos, and logos to get the audience's attention. The Gibson guitar ad explicitly sells guitars,
but it implicitly sells sex and suicide.
Gibson guitars are directing this ad to older teenage and young male adults. The audience is young
enough that they are still debating on what career path that they want to go down. To some of this
audience, this ad would grab their attention by thinking this guitar should get them laid. This aspect
would be directed mainly towards young males. Also, some guitars give the sexy and spontaneous
impression, which in a young male's eyes, is a perfect career. The ad is also saying that if a person
doesn't get laid because of a guitar, they should just kill themselves. By analyzing the statement and

Descriptive Essay On Guitar Music
For my favorite instrument, I chose the guitar. Many people across the globe are familiar with the
sounds of the guitar. This chordophone, with such a diverse sound, has been showcased in our
favorite songs and bands for decades. As familiar as we are with the sound, how familiar are we the
history, manufacturers, artists, composers, and its popularity in a traditional orchestra? First, I will
discuss the history of the guitar; when it started, the miraculous evolution, and the manufacturers
that took the industry by storm. Although there are many theories, the history is hazy as to exactly
where the first known guitar came from prior to the 16th century. According to the book A Concise
History of the Classic Guitar by Wade Graham, Hittite stone carvings in Turkey; dated 1300 BC,
eludes to the possibility of a similar instrument, as well as mentions in the old testament of long–
necked lutes in Mesopotamia. In Greek mythology; Fourth Homeric Hymn, mentions the use of a
stringed instrument made of cow gut and turtle carcass. History becomes a lot clearer around the
16th century, when printed literature became available. According to acousticmusic the Baroque
period is when the guitar really began to gain popularity, and was commonly used to accompany
vocalists. Guitar music began to grow and evolve; the Classical period lasting from 1730–1820, and
the Romantic period of 1815–1910 gained more popularity and diversity and was soon known
worldwide. Other

Not only did Niccolo play the violin, he also played many other instruments. Niccolo faced many

Potato Osmolarity Lab
Using potatoes we will determine the osmolarity of potato cells. Osmolarity is defined as the
concentration of a solution expressed as the total number of solute particles per liter. We will use
potatoes cut into slices and placed in a solution to determine the osmolarity. The potatoes will be
incubated for a period of 2 hours. At the end of the incubation period the initial weight of the
potatoes and the final weight of the potatoes will be compared. The comparisons should tell you if
the potatoes were hypotonic or not. If they are the final weight will be higher than the initial weight.
INTRODUCTION: Osmosis is driven by differences in solute/solvent ratios that exist across a
semipermeable membrane also is the difference in total solute concentration of these solutions.

It was also hypothesized that all of the solutions were hypotonic since the weight would increase
meaning the weight on the inside of the potato is less than that of the solution on the outside

A Brazilian Concert Review
I attended a Brazilian concert named Choro das 3 on April 11,2016 at Evergreen Presbyterian
Church. I was expecting this musical to sound very festive, fun and relaxing. The instrumental
group consisted of three sisters and their father. Elisa played the Brazilian mandolin, banjo, and the
clarinet. She also writes and performs on the piano. Lia holds the harmony while she played the
seven–string guitar. Their father, Eduardo, gave us the rhythm with the frame drum. Corina doubled
n the piccolo. The music I was exposed to doing the performance was Debussy called Fascia lee
played by the piano. I was not able to get the rest of the composer's entire names that were
mentioned in this performance due to their accents. What I liked about this performance was that it
was family oriented and they seemed very close and support each other in every move they make.
However, I did not find anything I did not like about this performance each selection was very
beautiful. They took there time to make sure every instrument was tuned right. The musical element
that I would change is the tone. They all sound alike to me but had different endings and I would
change that to make it better. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I liked the fact that the rattling of the tambourine sounded like a rattlesnake. The mandolin had a
very distinting sound to it. You could hear it over the flute and the bass guitar it had a very light

the desert. It made me feel like I was in Mexico moving my hips to the beat of the music. The other
selection made me think I was in the desert because Eduardo rattled the sides of his tambourine and
made me think of a rattlesnake. The selection was very

The Goat Rodeo Session Analysis
Instruments are a diverse class of tools that can be made of anything from brass to ebony and range
from the size of a pencil to a smart car; musicians manipulate these tools to help convey an idea or
emotion to their audience. One of the most common instruments, the piano, is highly versatile and
has been played in nearly every genre: Rhythm and Blues, Orchestral, Rock, Jazz, Pop, Rap, and
many more. But the truth is, genres have set platforms of instruments associated with each one and
many musicians respect that by applying only those instruments to their respected genre. However,
performing artist Chris Thile is currently expanding what genres are associated with the Mandolin
through his music. Thile is diversifying the musical field by ... Show more content on

Bluegrass incorporates sad slow Blues with twangy Country so, to begin with, it is a mixed genre;
however, Thile has gone far beyond incorporating two genres with his Mandolin. In 2013, Thile
released a solo album of Bach Sonatas played on Mandolin; being the first in existence, Thile's Bach
performance set a high standard with precise and accurate playing that mimicked how the sonatas
would traditionally be played on the piano. Not only did Thile prove that the Mandolin could handle
delicate and complex pieces through his rendition of the Bach sonatas, Chris Thile added the sonatas
to his repertoire and began incorporating other genres into the sonatas at his live performances.
Interpreting Bach sonatas, usually regarded as nearly perfect pieces, is a bold move in the world of
music but, Thile has manipulated the sonata's with eloquence through his proficiency on Mandolin.
In developing new musical techniques for the Mandolin, Thile has shown musicians that there is
still more to be discovered about instruments and musical compositions. Again, Thile contributes
new techniques to the musical field, helping to increase the diversity within it and setting a legacy

Comparing Girl With A Mandolin By Pablo Picasso And...
By comparing Girl with a Mandolin (1910) (Figure 1) by Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) and Georges
Braque (1882–963)'s Man with a Guitar (1912) (Figure 2), this paper will demonstrate that both
artists used the same subject matter (analytical cubist) and employed a similarly repetitive process
they convey two different ideas; no means totally devoid of realism in Picasso and comforting
exploration in Braque.
Girl with a Mandolin, this work depicts a naked girl holds a mandolin, and her head turns to the left
and presents the right side of face to the viewer, but the rest of her body is directly facing the
viewer. She looks down at the front of the mandolin and seems to be playing. Pablo Picasso uses

Cubism : A Successful Artist Essay
Picasso Cubism Picasso just like any other artist evolved over his long artistic career but his
evolution of fracturing and multi–views during the Cubism movement is of most importance.
Cubism was developed by Picasso and Georges Braque and lasted from 1909 to 1912 and involves
the use of monochromatic neutral colors and the taking apart of objects and analyzing them based
on their shapes. The later is defined as fracturing, while the multi–views is when he looked at
different objects from different angles finding all the different shapes an object can create and
juxtaposing them together. Picasso had a lot of natural ability combined with formal teaching at a
young age together these allowed him to become a very successful artist during his lifetime unlike
most who only find it in death. Like many artists Picasso faced traumas in his life among them, the
fights he had with his father over art, and the death of his sister at a young age. These effected him
for a long time and he used that to create art. Picasso eventually grew out of this tortured phase and
lived happily and simply. Picasso was born on October 25, 1881 to a Spanish middle class family.
His father was a painter, professor and curator in the art world, influencing Picasso to become a
painter, sculptor, and printmaker himself. At the age of seven, he began receiving formal training
from his father, his criticism created a lot of animosity between the two and their relationship was
forever strained. At thirteen,

historical development and the intentions of the messages that his paintings, drawings, and
sculptures convey. It is important to understand that Botero's career developed among a lack of
historical art tradition, for this reason his art is based on what he considers important, which is
volume and exaggeration of the form In conclusion, Fernando Botero has proved to be one of the

Bluegrass Music Research Paper
Bluegrass music has its earliest roots from the English, Irish and Scottish immigrants that settled in
the Appalachian Mountains. These people brought with them the traditional folk songs of their
homelands. This music blended and evolved into mountain, folk, hillbilly and even country music.
Only after the music became influenced by jazz and blues of the African American people did it
sound recognizable for what today is called bluegrass music. The men and groups of the first
generation of bluegrass pioneered a new sound while playing their old time music. In the 1930s, a
popular group from Kentucky named the Monroe Brothers was a successful country band. The
brothers were Charlie who played guitar and Bill who played the mandolin. The

Mumford And Sons
The band Mumford and Sons can be credited with the fairly recent rise in the popularity of folk rock
music. Their raw and emotional experiences expressed in the form of song, with the use of banjos,
guitars, an upright bass, drums, piano, and mandolin give them a sound that no other band can seem
to duplicate.
Mumford and Sons were formed in 2007 in West London. The members of the band include Marcus
Mumford, who is the lead vocalist, he plays the guitar, drums, and mandolin. Ben Lovett does
vocals, keyboard, accordion, and drums. Winston Marshall does vocals, banjo, guitar, and resonator
guitar. And Ted Dwane does vocals, upright bass, drums, and guitar (Ferro). All members of the
band play a role in the composition process.

Triumph of Good in Captain Corelli's Mandolin
Despite a backdrop of war, many characters in "Captain Corelli's Mandolin" are essentially good.
This goodness in many characters overcomes the difficulties within relationships and the difficulties
posed by war. De Bernières shows the triumphant nature of this goodness through his characters as
they interact and develop relationships with one another. The island of Cephallonia has been able to
survive through a history full of invasions. Its population has triumphed and shows itself to be
basically good. Although at one point they ridicule Father Arsenios when Velisarios humiliates him
by lifting him up, there is no malice in their actions. They come to the church to leave "tokens of ...

Close to Pelagia's heart, he is kind towards Psipsina and Lemoni. If Psipsina sat on a piece of the
captain's music, "he would go away and fetch another sheet rather than disturb her." Not only is this
an example of Corelli's basic kind nature, but also of his ability to become part of the family in
Cephallonia and relax into the Greek lifestyle.
Corelli is also able to relate to all ages as he demonstrates through his kindness towards Lemoni. He
plays with the child and is untiring in his attentions as she drags him out to see any piece of rusty
metal that might be another Turkish mine. Despite being a captain of the enemy he is concerned for
all the children of the island.
The captain's only apparently vicious actions and reprimands occur towards the soldiers. He
explains that this is because he is compassionate towards the victims of the soldiers' torments.
Corelli only punishes soldiers in relatively extreme ways because he is so angry that they can ignore
the fundamental levels of civility and goodness. He is able to continue to show this kind of reaction
as an example as he ascends in Pelagia's view as Mandras descends into a militant who will harm
others for no reason.
Another element of Corelli's goodness is that allows himself to love although he has fallen in love
with a Greek girl. He is unable to be angry with Pelagia, even though in her confused state about

Bill Monroe Research Papers
William Smith Monroe, also known as Bill Monroe, was born in the mountains of Kentucky by a
small farm on September 13, 1911. J.B. Monroe, the father of Bill, decided to name his son after his
two brothers. Bill Monroe was most famous for creating a new style of American country– folk
music style called "Blue Grass". The name originated from his popular band, "Blue Grass Boys",
which started in 1938. Despite people believing that his music was considered country, Bill Monroe
is titled as "The Father of Blue Grass". He was also known for popularizing the Mandolin
instrument. Bill Monroe played the Mandolin because his older brothers, Charlie and Birch, would
not allow him to play the fiddle or guitar. His first instrument was a little Neapolitan– style
mandolin and he would never touch another instrument for the rest of his career. Bill Monroe started
his music career with his older brothers and their band was called "The Monroe Brothers".
However, their chemistry as a band started to fall. According to Richard D. Smith, "By 1938, some
fans of the Monroe Brothers noticed they were beginning to arrive at shows separately and not
speaking to each other, ignoring each other to the point where they almost seemed facing in

was one of the major regions she felt tied to the women's suffrage movement. She wanted to do and

represents this belief is The Mandolin Player, It depicts the portrait of a young girl playing a

Louis de Bernières' Novel Captain Corelli's Mandolin
Already from the first chapter the author introduces us to one of the most important characters of the
book, Dr. Iannis. There are several factors that help the writer to present him to the readers. The
most important ones are language (including the narrative style) and classical allusions.
The diction in this chapter is very difficult and contains a lot of medical terminology. This shows us
that Dr. Iannis is a very educated man and that probably most of the people on the island respect him
due to this superiority. From the phrases that he uses we find out that he likes to impress people,

Altogether the style of narration is very interesting, it's an interlace between the thoughts of the
omniscient narrator and the thoughts of Dr. Iannis.
The images and the classical allusions that the author uses in this chapter are also very important in
presenting the new character to the readers. We soon find out that being a doctor (probably the only
one on the island) is not the only thing that Dr. Iannis does. In his free time he is writing a book
about the island, where he lives. And the reader already feels an intimate connection growing

Cephallonia, because he cannot write a book about it, without expressing any feelings towards the

islanders themselves."– as soon as he changes the title, Dr. Iannis feels free to express all of his

John Steinbeck's 'Gentlemen Prefer Blondes'
I have recently read four paragraphs of your novel, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, and I must say it is a
very comical narrative indeed. One aspect I noticed while reading, is the plot setting. You structured
it in a way that it informed the reader about the protagonist's background, while providing definite
interpretive clues about the character's thought process. For instance, the protagonist, Lorelei Lee,
recalls a time when an observant friend commented that if she were to write down her thoughts, it
would produce a book. This not only defines her character, but also provides how others think of
her. Moreover, most men she meets assume that since she is blonde and talkative, they can take

The point–of–view (POV) is one of the foundations that create the meaning of the story. By writing
it in first person, the author is able to convey the irony or humor of the story through the character.
For example, Lorelei acknowledges the humor at the possibility of pursuing an authoress career.
Further mentioning that prior to this idea, her family wanted her to pursue a musical career.
However, Lorelei despised the long hours of practicing the mandolin that came along with pursing
such a career. Recalling. that she became temperamental, threw the mandolin away, and ended up
quitting. This event, specifically the throwing of the mandolin, signifies how severe her
temperaments can become from outright frustration. Yet, a positive solution rose up from this
negative event, she found that writing keeps her tranquil and collected. Whereas, practicing her
instrument releases fidgety frustration, due to the long hours of repetitive practice. Humorously, she
says that she should smile, since she got carried away writing about this incident; finishing the diary
entry in a rather sour mood. Concluding, that writing in first–person utilizes the skills needed to

The Ukulele
The ukulele is a member of the lute family of instruments; meaning that the strings run in a plane
parallel to the sound table. Most people believe that the ukulele originated in Hawaii however, they
actually had their first start in Portugal in 139 B. C in the Lusitania tribe. By the thirteenth century,
four–string instruments were being used in Spain, when six–string instruments were introduced in
the 1700s the popularity of chordophones exploded. (A chordophone is a musical instrument that
makes sound by way of a vibrating string or strings stretched between two points.) Although we all

Manuel Nunes also suggested a different tuning pattern to make chord formation easier. The body of
the ukulele is usually made from wood. The type of wood has a significant impact on the sound,
tone, and quality. Mahogany is thought to be the finest wood for making ukuleles. It also has
excellent aging properties, sounding better as it gets older. Typically, the same type of wood is used
for the entire instrument. The ukulele is a small instrument that looks like a miniature version of a
guitar. It consists of a short neck, the main body, four strings and tuning keys, a bridge, a fretboard,
and a sound hole. There are a variety of different types of ukuleles including the soprano, concert,
tenor, and baritone. The soprano is the smallest (20 inches) and the baritone is the largest (30
inches). The strings are tuned to the notes G–C–E–A on all ukuleles except the Baritone. Tuning for
the Baritone is D–G–B–E because it has a deeper sound like that of a guitar. Fun fact about the
ukulele: Neil Armstrong loved to play the ukulele in his downtime. After his trip to the moon, he
feared that he had contracted a strange bacterium, so he spent weeks in quarantine, often

Essay on Louis de Bernieres's Captain Corelli’s Mandolin
Louis de Bernieres's Captain Corelli's Mandolin
Louis de Bernieres uses three principal techniques to portray the effects of war so powerfully in his
book. These techniques are the powerful narrative, strong pictorial language, and black humour.
Above all, the message is conveyed in the narrative, especially when
Louis De Bernieres graphically describes the war's impact on the soldiers who are fighting for their
country. At first, the soldiers are united in their fight against the enemy "you are all young and
strong, overflowing with life, and you are all in this shit together"

All their illusions disappeared:
"We fought and froze and died for an empire that has no purpose" – page 151. The war seems to
deaden the soldiers' souls. An example of this is on page 134 "I could think of nothing at all. I was
an automaton without emotion or hope". In the end the soldiers break down totally – they
degenerate into despair and become like animals, as shown on page 232: "Within the space of a few
days we had become skeletons, rooting for food like pigs."
The horror and hostility of the war made the soldiers despair so much that they were happy to die –
"Dear mother, I came into this world in a state of innocence and leave it so utterly wearied that I am
contented to die." This was how they ended up after all the atrocities they had witnessed and
committed. "War is a dirty business. We all have to do terrible things." Mandras almost God like in
his beauty at the beginning, kills an old man; the war seemed to deaden all their feelings and
sympathy. They are left without "emotion or hope".
By describing this degradation of morale and emotions, Louis de
Bernieres powerfully shows the physical and mental effect of war on the soldiers. A good example
of this deterioration is Mandras. Before the war he was physically beautiful, harmonious in the way
he moved, and strong. He had "slim hips...sharp shoulders...a taught stomach" that made him look
powerful and sculpted. However, after the war, he

  • 2. "Crazy Face" Van Morrison, Music Review Essay "Crazy Face" The song I chose to review is "Crazy Face" by Van Morrison on the album "His Band and the Street Choir". The tone color of this song is upbeat and jazzy, not so much inspirational, but laid back and pleasant. The tempo is based around an 8th note signature, mostly displayed by the Hi–hat in what I would classify as allegretto. The instruments involved in this song are; a piano, a standard drum set most likely a five piece with a standard 2 toms maybe 3, bass drum, snare, ride symbol, and a two crash symbols, an acoustic guitar, a banjo, a ukulele, a mandolin, an electric base, an organ, a saxophone, and last of all Van Morrison's drunken voice. The form of this song is extremely simple yet very interesting and not common ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The bridge is a 45 second saxophone solo. The rest of the instruments play the same verse over and over in harmony, with cymbals and stressed guitar chords on the accent between the verses. All of this is played underneath the saxophone which is practically singing its own improved song, which varies from hitting high notes in the register to low arpeggios in the lower register. The saxophone plays call and response with itself, which leads the listener to believe there are two saxophones, when in reality one saxophone is dueling with itself. During the bridge not only is the saxophone emphasized, but the organ plays the bass line on higher octaves on the same dynamics as the saxophone, so the bridge focuses on the polyphonic relationship between the sax and the organ. After the bridge a sporadic drum fill opens up for the first verse of the song (A) which is repeated just as the first time but more emphasized, especially the vocals. After the verse the chorus follows, almost identical sounding to the first chorus just with more emphasized vocals. The song then ends with an abrupt note, typical for jazzy ... • 3. Corelli's Mandolin by Louis de Bernieres Essay Corelli's Mandolin by Louis de Bernieres Carlo was fighting for Italy, while Mandras was in the Greek army. Both of the characters experienced a lot during the war. Nevertheless everything Mandras and Carlo fought on opposite sides. What does it say about the novels moral scheme, that the sufferings of ordinary people on both sides are recounted in detail? Consider these two characters but also other "moral" issues raised in the novel so far. Mandras and Carlo fought on opposite sides. Their experiences and feelings through out the war are recounted to the readers in a lot of details. And even though they were "enemies", their stories are very similar, as if the author is talking about the same man. This style of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I would not desert him [...] he would make me an inspired hero. I would have someone to impress, someone whose admiration would give me that which I cannot give myself; esteem, and honour." (p. 29). He wants to join the army because he is a homosexual and he wants to be able to love and be loved, or the least to be able to impress someone and get his admiration. At the same time Mandras also wants to join the army, and his reasons come from love as well. He wants to go to war, because this way he feels he will be able to do something important, and thus by the end of it, he would be good enough to marry Pelagia. "I will never be a man until I've done something important, something great, something I can live with, something to be esteemed [...] no man is a man until he has been a soldier." (p. 80). As we can see from the quote, Mandras basically wants to gain the same things by joining the army: esteem and honour. He wants to impress people by his actions and show that his life is not pointless, that he risked himself in order to defend his country and its people. The next similarity between the characters is what they have found out about the war, their disappointment and despair. Both of them realised that war is not at all as what they thought it would be. After Carlo and his friend Francesco had their first atrocity, they no longer felt excited by the war. "We felt no triumph. We felt exhausted and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Analysis of Fernando Botero's Style Fernando Botero's style is arguably one of the most distinctive of artists still alive today. Embracing a sweeping aesthetic that attempts to celebrate the vivacity of life with seemingly disproportionately enlarged figures, Botero's style celebrates an assortment of riotous colors while alternating between scenes of his native Columbia and social–political themes (Haas). An examination of the development of Botero's style indicates that it has a number of disparate sources and influences which informed the artist, who ultimately refined and merged them with characteristics from his own life to render works that are inimitably his own. An analysis of key works of artistry from Botero support the hypothesis that his larger–than–life style of painting and sculpture was conceived of as a means of conveying the richness and complexity of the events, feelings and actions that constitute the scope of life itself. Botero's merging of different styles of art to form his own is probably best documented by the formal training he received in this discipline. He travelled extensively throughout Europe, Mexico, and the United States while attending educational institutions and absorbing local methods and themes of art work. Although he studied at Sapin's San Fernando Academy and spent a substantial amount of time in Paris, it was his education at Florence's Academy of San Marcos would create the most significant impact on his future creations. • 5. Bluegrass Research Paper Bluegrass Bluegrass began originating its style and form during the 1930s and 1940s, although, the term itself was not strongly used until the late 1950s. Bluegrass is vastly popular throughout the southeastern United States. The music originates from a white, rural music tradition. The style is drawn from Appalachian–derived music that has integrated a mixture of African American and Anglo–Irish musical impacts. This genre is characterized by virtuosic performances with acoustic implements. The term bluegrass itself refers to an acoustic string–band melody. Its vocal style stresses a very high–pitched tone. Most commonly, the instruments involved with the sting–band can range between the mandolin, banjo, bass, guitar and fiddle. There is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 6. Personal Narrative: My Hispanic Heritage Shaped My Life What makes me unique is that I am not afraid of failure. When I set a goal I do not focus on whether I might or might not be successful; I concentrate on doing my best and putting all of my effort into the task. What separates me from others is the adversity I've been through, my diverse skills, leadership abilities, my contribution to the community, and my work ethic. My Hispanic heritage shaped my life because I of what my family has overcome. My grandparents from both of my parent's sides of the family picked cotton and vegetables in the fields to help their families. I have learned from my parents and grandparents stories that it is worth working hard in school to obtain a good job in the future. Both of my parents went to college and they have been a great inspiration to me. Not all of my aunts and uncles have had good jobs. Some of them only graduated from high school. For example, my Uncle Romeo become a construction worker after he graduated from high school. It is difficult for him to buy his kids what they want and need, and even provide for himself. • 7. Analysis Of The Poem ' The Ballad Of Jed Clampett ' Originally named The Muleskinners, The Hamilton County Bluegrass band was founded by a group of university students in Auckland in 1962.[9] For the young members, their first encounter with bluegrass would be the theme song "The Ballad of Jed Clampett" from the television show The Beverly Hillbillies. The show was one of the few American shows airing on New Zealand television at the time. The Flatt and Scruggs theme tune and Scruggs style banjo influenced player Paul Trenwith, who said "that's how I wanted to learn banjo, and we found out there was a whole music genre that went with that, so we chased that up."[10] Television was one of the key ways that the bluegrass genre was and still is transmitted internationally. The dominance of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The albums of the Hamilton County Bluegrass Band included typical bluegrass fare, recording covers of genre pioneers Bill Monroe and Flatt & Scruggs. Their concert repertoire included covers of bluegrass standards such as "Salty Dog Blues", "Uncle Pen", "Kentucky Waltz" and "Orange Blossom Special," a song for which they became known for.[13] These songs referenced rural life and locations, whether explicitly such as "Kentucky Waltz" or within the lyrics, referencing hunting or barn dances. In 1967, the band performed Reno and Smiley's "Barefoot Nellie," a song with rural themes and humorous lyrics such as "Nellie put on her Sunday dress Thought that it would look the best Made out of an old feed sack Cow feed wrote on the back"[14] Adopting an American accent, the recording of "Barefoot Nellie" features high lonesome harmony and solos on the banjo, mandolin and fiddle, with band members displaying virtuosic mastery of their instruments. These covers featured on their albums amongst traditional songs and an assortment of their own original music, however much of their original music didn't emerge until their 1971 album For You. Most likely due to the obscurity of the albums at the time, there is little to no lyrical or musical information or description to be found regarding these original recordings. • 11. A Comparison Of Catch 22 And Captain Corelli's Mandolin In Catch 22 and Captain Corelli's Mandolin, both authors suggest the unsettling idea that life holds no universal conclusion because in actuality life is the continual clash of absolutes and therefore refuses 'the reader the comfort of closure'. Both novels handle the difficult subject of war using similar postmodernist techniques to display it, such as fragmented narratives. However their intentions and ideas of war are extremely different creating interesting comparisons. De Bernier's novel, Captain Corelli's Mandolin, published in 1994, but set during the second world war, is composed with multiple narratives, far from the omniscient narrator often found in 19th century literature. When considering war we believe there is a good and a bad side, in the Second World War most would conceive the Nazis to unequivocally be the enemy and therefore immoral. Perhaps this is why the chapter 'The Good Nazi', in Captain Corelli's Mandolin, immediately unsettles the reader as there is no irony in this statement. De Berneires presents Gunter Weber full of innocence and as someone who has simply absorbed the propaganda of the Nazis. We see his innocence portrayed in 'The Good Nazi'; 'Weber was a twenty–two year old man and had never seen a woman naked before...Weber was a still a virgin'. The simplicity of De Bernier's language here reflects the simplicity of Weber as a character. Weber causes us to question the limitations of our own heroism or our capacity to see beyond propaganda. It could be argued that rather than the 'good Nazi' he represents the ordinary Nazi, he accepts what the state has told him as that is the easiest path. By presenting us with someone who is ordinary it unsettles the reader as it draws a bond between the reader and the character. Rather than blaming and seeing him as monstrous and all the other preconceptions society holds against Nazis, we instead see qualities of ordinary humanity and ourselves in him. This chordophone, with such a diverse sound, has been showcased in our favorite songs and bands for decades. As familiar as we are with the sound, how familiar are we the history, manufacturers, artists, composers, and its popularity in a traditional orchestra? First, I will discuss the history of the guitar; when it started, the miraculous evolution, and the manufacturers that took the industry by storm. Although there are many theories, the history is hazy as to exactly where the first known guitar came from prior to the 16th century. According to the book A Concise History of the Classic Guitar by Wade Graham, Hittite stone carvings in Turkey; dated 1300 BC, eludes to the possibility of a similar instrument, as well as mentions in the old testament of long– necked lutes in Mesopotamia. In Greek mythology; Fourth Homeric Hymn, mentions the use of a stringed instrument made of cow gut and turtle carcass. History becomes a lot clearer around the 16th century, when printed literature became available. According to acousticmusic the Baroque period is when the guitar really began to gain popularity, and was commonly used to accompany vocalists. Guitar music began to grow and evolve; the Classical period lasting from 1730–1820, and the Romantic period of 1815–1910 gained more popularity and diversity and was soon known worldwide. Other ... Osmolarity is defined as the concentration of a solution expressed as the total number of solute particles per liter. We will use potatoes cut into slices and placed in a solution to determine the osmolarity. The potatoes will be incubated for a period of 2 hours. At the end of the incubation period the initial weight of the potatoes and the final weight of the potatoes will be compared. The comparisons should tell you if the potatoes were hypotonic or not. Cubism : A Successful Artist Essay Picasso Cubism Picasso just like any other artist evolved over his long artistic career but his evolution of fracturing and multi–views during the Cubism movement is of most importance. Cubism was developed by Picasso and Georges Braque and lasted from 1909 to 1912 and involves the use of monochromatic neutral colors and the taking apart of objects and analyzing them based on their shapes. The later is defined as fracturing, while the multi–views is when he looked at different objects from different angles finding all the different shapes an object can create and juxtaposing them together. • 32. Bill Monroe Research Papers William Smith Monroe, also known as Bill Monroe, was born in the mountains of Kentucky by a small farm on September 13, 1911. J.B. Monroe, the father of Bill, decided to name his son after his two brothers. Bill Monroe was most famous for creating a new style of American country– folk music style called "Blue Grass". The name originated from his popular band, "Blue Grass Boys", which started in 1938. Despite people believing that his music was considered country, Bill Monroe is titled as "The Father of Blue Grass". He was also known for popularizing the Mandolin instrument. Bill Monroe played the Mandolin because his older brothers, Charlie and Birch, would not allow him to play the fiddle or guitar. His first instrument was a little Neapolitan– style mandolin and he would never touch another instrument for the rest of his career. Bill Monroe started his music career with his older brothers and their band was called "The Monroe Brothers". However, their chemistry as a band started to fall. According to Richard D. Smith, "By 1938, some fans of the Monroe Brothers noticed they were beginning to arrive at shows separately and not speaking to each other, ignoring each other to the point where they almost seemed facing in different directions onstage" (Smith, pg. 44). The problem with the Monroe ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His music career started to rise during World War II (1939–1945) and the Korean War (1950–1953). Although Bill Monroe refused to be dependent on it because it was the power of his instruments that made his music so special. • 33. Mary Cassatt's Influence On Mary Cassat Mary Cassatt was born in 1844 to a wealthy family with six other siblings. During her life span she learned from any famous artist, and was a phenomenal painter herself. She went through some hard situation and historical events. Each of these instances led her to paint about women and their children such as the painting Maternite which is a painting of a woman nursing her child this was a typical painting for Mary Cassatt. Mary was also big on representing women's suffrage which took place before, during, and after the Gilded Age. Mary was born in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania. Her father was Robert Cassat, he was a stockbroker and land Speculator, a very successful one at that. Her mother, Katherine Kelso Johnston came from a banking family. Her family was very ... Other things that had an influence on her was the Civil War, the women's suffrage movement, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and Ecole des Beaux–Art school in Paris. Her father did not want her to be a professional painter, he wanted her to be more or less a housewife. I believe this was one of the major regions she felt tied to the women's suffrage movement. She wanted to do and be who she wanted without being discriminated by men such as her father. One painting that represents this belief is The Mandolin Player, It depicts the portrait of a young girl playing a Mandolin but I believe it has a deeper meaning almost as if it a picture of Mary Cassatt at a young age just beginning to learn her passion and focusing solely on it. I believe she also would have wanted equal opportunities for women. • 34. Louis de Bernières' Novel Captain Corelli's Mandolin Essay Louis de Bernières' Novel Captain Corelli's Mandolin Already from the first chapter the author introduces us to one of the most important characters of the book, Dr. Iannis. There are several factors that help the writer to present him to the readers. The most important ones are language (including the narrative style) and classical allusions. The diction in this chapter is very difficult and contains a lot of medical terminology. This shows us that Dr. Iannis is a very educated man and that probably most of the people on the island respect him due to this superiority. From the phrases that he uses we find out that he likes to impress people, especially if they are his patients. For example in the first chapter instead of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This tells the readers that probably the people in the village don't always feel comfortable being around Dr. Iannis. Altogether the style of narration is very interesting, it's an interlace between the thoughts of the omniscient narrator and the thoughts of Dr. Iannis. The images and the classical allusions that the author uses in this chapter are also very important in presenting the new character to the readers. We soon find out that being a doctor (probably the only one on the island) is not the only thing that Dr. Iannis does. In his free time he is writing a book about the island, where he lives. And the reader already feels an intimate connection growing between him, Cephallonia, and its people. We know that he is very attached to Cephallonia, because he cannot write a book about it, without expressing any feelings towards the island. Thus he changes the name of the book from "The New History of Cephallonia" to "A Personal History of Cephallonia". "Now he could forget about leaving out the loaded adjectives and the ancient historical grudges, now he could be vitriolic about the Romans, the Normans [...] even the islanders themselves."– as soon as he changes the title, Dr. Iannis feels free to express all of his ... It is said that the ukulele is a possible derivative of a similar Portuguese instrument called the machete, which literally translates to "jumping flea". This instrument was taken over seas on boats when work hands for plantations were brought over. The ukulele gained popularity when King Kalakaua of Hawaii, a musician himself, took it up and essentially made it an icon. This instrument has heavily influenced modern music, visible in the musical stylings of "Twenty One Pilots", Jason Mraz, and many Disney soundtracks with its light and happy sounds with a slight feeling of folk. • 38. John Steinbeck's 'Gentlemen Prefer Blondes' I have recently read four paragraphs of your novel, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, and I must say it is a very comical narrative indeed. One aspect I noticed while reading, is the plot setting. You structured it in a way that it informed the reader about the protagonist's background, while providing definite interpretive clues about the character's thought process. For instance, the protagonist, Lorelei Lee, recalls a time when an observant friend commented that if she were to write down her thoughts, it would produce a book. This not only defines her character, but also provides how others think of her. Moreover, most men she meets assume that since she is blonde and talkative, they can take advantage of her. However, that is the irony of Anita ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The point–of–view (POV) is one of the foundations that create the meaning of the story. By writing it in first person, the author is able to convey the irony or humor of the story through the character. For example, Lorelei acknowledges the humor at the possibility of pursuing an authoress career. Further mentioning that prior to this idea, her family wanted her to pursue a musical career. However, Lorelei despised the long hours of practicing the mandolin that came along with pursing such a career. Recalling. that she became temperamental, threw the mandolin away, and ended up quitting. This event, specifically the throwing of the mandolin, signifies how severe her temperaments can become from outright frustration. Yet, a positive solution rose up from this negative event, she found that writing keeps her tranquil and collected. Whereas, practicing her instrument releases fidgety frustration, due to the long hours of repetitive practice. Humorously, she says that she should smile, since she got carried away writing about this incident; finishing the diary entry in a rather sour mood. Concluding, that writing in first–person utilizes the skills needed to grasp the true meaning of Anita Loos' character: a dramatic and cunning ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Ukulele Research Paper The Ukulele The ukulele is a member of the lute family of instruments; meaning that the strings run in a plane parallel to the sound table. Most people believe that the ukulele originated in Hawaii however, they actually had their first start in Portugal in 139 B. C in the Lusitania tribe. By the thirteenth century, four–string instruments were being used in Spain, when six–string instruments were introduced in the 1700s the popularity of chordophones exploded. (A chordophone is a musical instrument that makes sound by way of a vibrating string or strings stretched between two points.) Although we all picture ukuleles as a Hawaiian instrument, it wasn't until 1879 that the first ukulele was brought over from Portugal. One of the Portuguese ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Manuel Nunes also suggested a different tuning pattern to make chord formation easier. The body of the ukulele is usually made from wood. The type of wood has a significant impact on the sound, tone, and quality. Mahogany is thought to be the finest wood for making ukuleles. It also has excellent aging properties, sounding better as it gets older. Typically, the same type of wood is used for the entire instrument. The ukulele is a small instrument that looks like a miniature version of a guitar. It consists of a short neck, the main body, four strings and tuning keys, a bridge, a fretboard, and a sound hole. There are a variety of different types of ukuleles including the soprano, concert, tenor, and baritone. The soprano is the smallest (20 inches) and the baritone is the largest (30 inches). The strings are tuned to the notes G–C–E–A on all ukuleles except the Baritone. Tuning for the Baritone is D–G–B–E because it has a deeper sound like that of a guitar. Fun fact about the ukulele: Neil Armstrong loved to play the ukulele in his downtime. • 40. Essay on Louis de Bernieres's Captain Corelli’s Mandolin Louis de Bernieres's Captain Corelli's Mandolin Louis de Bernieres uses three principal techniques to portray the effects of war so powerfully in his book. These techniques are the powerful narrative, strong pictorial language, and black humour. Above all, the message is conveyed in the narrative, especially when Louis De Bernieres graphically describes the war's impact on the soldiers who are fighting for their country. At first, the soldiers are united in their fight against the enemy "you are all young and strong, overflowing with life, and you are all in this shit together" – page 38. The mood at the beginning is positive, so much so that the "soldiers grew to love each other" – page 38. They were excited about being ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... All their illusions disappeared: "We fought and froze and died for an empire that has no purpose" – page 151. The war seems to deaden the soldiers' souls. An example of this is on page 134 "I could think of nothing at all. I was an automaton without emotion or hope". In the end the soldiers break down totally – they degenerate into despair and become like animals, as shown on page 232: "Within the space of a few days we had become skeletons, rooting for food like pigs." The horror and hostility of the war made the soldiers despair so much that they were happy to die – "Dear mother, I came into this world in a state of innocence and leave it so utterly wearied that I am contented to die." This was how they ended up after all the atrocities they had witnessed and committed. "War is a dirty business. We all have to do terrible things." Mandras almost God like in his beauty at the beginning, kills an old man; the war seemed to deaden all their feelings and sympathy. They are left without "emotion or hope". By describing this degradation of morale and emotions, Louis de Bernieres powerfully shows the physical and mental effect of war on the soldiers. A good example of this deterioration is Mandras. Before the war he was physically beautiful, harmonious in the way he moved, and strong. He had "slim hips...sharp shoulders...a taught stomach" that made him look powerful and sculpted. However, after the war, he ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
