result of a lack of certain vitamins or minerals in an unbalanced or unhealthy diet. Your body does
not have enough nutrients and does not function properly. There are two types of malnutrition;
undernutrition and overnutrition. Undernutrition is when a person has a nutrient deficiency and
overnutrition is when a person has excess nutrients. Malnutrition can be a result of a medical
disorder such as problems with indigestion or absorption and other medical conditions. When a
person is malnourished, their bodies are prone to disease as they are not strong enough to fight
infections or viruses. Malnutrition can be a result of eating disorders like anorexia, bulimia, obesity
and starvation. This could be caused by poverty, mental instabilities or over eating. Symptoms may
vary according to the cause of malnutrition including; weight loss, dizziness and tiredness. Patients

bad events all trigger Bulimia. Early diagnoses of binge eating could help avoid a progression to
Bulimia as well as support from family and friends when the person starts a diet, or has a low body
image. People should also understand that purging is not a very effective way of getting rid of
consumed calories. Vomiting after eating expels 50% of calories, Laxatives only 10% and diuretics
almost nothing. People with Bulimia are ashamed of how much they eat and are hard to find out

Bulimia is Multi–Impulsive Bulimia Nervosa this illness begins just like simple bulimia begins and
in the same age group. This illness is usually caused by emotional and impulse control and most of
the same reasons as simple bulimic sufferers. Most multi–impulsive bulimia nervosa sufferers also
suffer from drug or alcohol abuse, self–harm [cutting forearms], and stealing. Usually there is a
disturbance in the family of somewhat and in personality they have shown poor interest in normal
activities, school, and socializing.
The disorder of Bulimia can be triggered by many different reasons and problems in someone's life.
Bulimia is not just about losing weight and being frightened to gain weight there's more to it. The
reason of vomiting is more to feel like the person can control something in their life .As they feel
that they can't control most things that occur in their life they choose to vomit so they can control
their weight this is most common in the teen years because puberty has just changed their whole life
mostly, also for different people it eases stress and anxiety. There are so many different reasons for
these disorders such as some cultures have the ideal body weight, which just happens to be thin.
Families have a big impact on this disorder as well, mostly when the parents have a big say or

Many students who participate in sports are very common to have an eating disorder such as
Bulimia Nervosa. There are different sports that it is most common in and they are usually ones with
less clothing or uniforms also. Athletes such as Gymnasts, ice–skaters, ballerinas and even runners
have a very high risk of eating disorders. The effort to please people around another and to have a
perfect body and even coaches suggesting diets for a team or players can lead to eating disorders.
Even sports such as wrestling can have these disorders even though these disorders are less common
in guys because wrestling has a specific weight category. Mostly in guy's sports eating disorders are
unintentionally encouraged because more in boys sport teams they are taught winning is the most
important thing. But when an athlete has an eating disorder it is more harmful because they are

Overview of Bulimia Essay
Throughout history, women have proved their intellectual strength. Whether it be gaining the right
to vote and breaking the gender barrier from 1848–1920, or standing–up against racial injustice,
women have been some of the most influential people. However, even after all this, women still
have an increased desire to be thin because it is deemed "prettier" and "more desirable." 40% of
normal weight adolescent females regard themselves as "fat" and aspire to a thinner body, but "do
not have time to watch what they eat or exercise" (Wade, Keski–Rahkonen, & Hudson, 2011). It
appears that the pursuit of thinness may have emerged as a way through which women could
compete amongst themselves and demonstrate self–control. Yet, in turning to ... Show more content

Thus, because there is no outward symptoms, it is not uncommon for someone to know a women
who has been affected by bulimia. "What you eat in private is what you wear in public." This
common twenty–first century quote is plastered all over social media sites as a "motivational" quote
and a "friendly reminder" for women to eat healthy and workout. Yet, the quote also seems to define
an episode of binge eating by bulimics, which is the consumption of an amount of food that is larger
than most individuals would eat in a similar period of time under similar (American Psychiatric
Association, 1980). The excessive consumption of food must also be accompanied by a sense of
lack of control and usually occurs in secrecy or as inconspicuously as possible. An indicator of loss
of control is the inability to refrain from eating or to stop eating once started. The consideration of
an episode is subjective to the occasion too, as the quantity of food that might be regarded as
excessive for a typical meal might be considered normal during a holiday meal. Individuals often do
not stop binging until they are to the point of being uncomfortably full (American Psychiatric
Association, 1980). The larger the amount of food ingested, the more rapid the emptying rate which
is why bulimia is rarely successful as a means of weight control; however, bulimic activity can

I sat there staring in the mirror filled with disgust at the figure on the other end. I thought " another

I was 17 years old when I began to have the premature symptoms of Bulimia Nervosa. I was a
cheerleader for a national competition squad, and was worried about being able to tumble to my full
potential because of the extra weight that I was carrying. But more importantly I was uncomfortable

An episode usually begins with a binge, A binge is defined as eating in a discrete period of time an
amount of food that is definitely larger than most individuals would eat under similar circumstances,
(American Psychiatric Association, p.545). This would not include eating small amounts of food all
day. The binge is typically triggered by dysphoric mood states, interpersonal stressors, intense
hunger following dietary restraint, or feelings related to body weight, body shape, and food,
(American Psychiatric Association, p.546). Some say that binge eating is accompanied by a sense of
lack of control you have in your life, and in my case this was exactly right. There is a sense that you
have no control over your life and everything involved in it, so to compensate for the lack of control
you have. You try to control your weight and you're eating habits. Some individuals with Bulimia
Nervosa have described a binge as a feeling of dissociation, from their lives and everything around
them. They have set their life at that time around their episode and think of nothing else.
The binge it self will often last until the Individual is either uncomfortable or even to the point that
they are painfully full. The American Psychiatric Association notes that during a binge the foods
that are consumed varies; however, it typically includes sweets, and or high

Bulimia Symptoms And Treatments Of Bulimia
"Bulimia" Have you ever looked at the cover of a magazine and seen a beautiful woman that just
looked so thin, and thought "How in the world did she get that way?" Well like me I'm sure millions
of girls have wondered the same thing. Many of them becoming self–conscious, what with our
society placing so much emphasis on being thin in order to be attractive. But how thin is too thin?
Many girls in this country use some kind of diet or exercise plan but, others take it too far. Bulimia
is exactly what taking it to far means. Have you ever met someone who always leaves to go to the
bathroom after they finish eating? Perhaps, when they were eating they eat way more then was
necessary almost to the point of it being excessive. Maybe this person you know has anxiety,
depression, or a poor body image. These are all signs that a person may have Bulimia. ("Bulimia

where a person alternates between bingeing and purging their food. Not to be confused with
Anorexia which is another psychological disorder where an individual is so afraid of being "fat" that
they eat an unhealthily low amount of food or just don't eat at all. (Grison, Sarah, Todd F.
Heatherton, and Michael S. Gazzaniga. "Chapter 10." Psychology in Your Life. N.p.: n.p., n.d. 354–

Bulimia Nervosa Effect
Cause and Effect Essay Bulimia Nervosa is a psychological and severe life–threatening eating
disorder described by the ingestion of large amounts of food in a small amount and then doing
things such as misusing laxatives and self–induced vomiting.
Bulimia Nervosa can be caused by abuse and/or trauma. For instance, a woman could be in an
abusive relationship where the man is constantly calling her fat. She may binge eat and then purge
right after to lose the weight. Purging is the act of trying to control body weight by misuse of
laxatives, self–induced vomiting, or diuretics.
Another cause of Bulimia nervosa could be having a job or profession that focuses on body image.
An example of this is: a man going for an interview at a modeling agency. The manager says
everything about the man is perfect except his excess body fat around his abdomen. So he begins to
binge eat for about a day and then vomits for a day. Binge eating is the process of eating more than
your daily value in one sitting; or a few hours. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These effects include chronic dehydration and infertility.
One of the effects of bulimia nervosa is chronic dehydration. Some symptoms of chronic
dehydration include constipation, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. Also, this can cause low
levels of sodium, potassium, and magnesium.
The next effect of bulimia nervosa is infertility. Infertility is not being able to get pregnant, despite
having carefully timed, unprotected sexual activity for a year or over.
Finally, there are many causes and effects of bulimia nervosa. A few of the causes are abuse or
trauma; another cause is having a job or profession that focuses on physical image. A few of the
effects are chronic dehydration, and infertility. These things all play into the process of

Bulimia and Depression
The prevalence of eating disorders among American women has increased dramatically in the past
decade. In turn, the psychological community has expanded it's scope of research and study by
focusing more attention on eating disorders and concentrating on other extended issues related to
eating disorders. The desire to distinguish and understand a possible relationship between bulimia

introduce the reader to literature from two different journal articles on this relationship.

Cognitions manifested by bulimics include dysfunctional attributions regarding weight gain, guilt,

to depressive symptomatology include negative automatic thoughts, dysfunctional attitudes, and

Therefore, there are connections between these two disorders. There is a link in the relationship
between bulimia and depression. Understanding this link is essential for treatment and therapy.

Lisa Hinz and Donald Williamson (1987) reflect on the evidence presented in past studies relating
bulimia and depression and discriminate between the idea that bulimia is an affective variant of
depression or a separate diagnostic entity often associated with depression. In their attempt to
understand the relationship, the authors point out the complications that arise in an evaluation of
studies that deal with depression and other illnesses due to the common associations made between
the two. Hinz and Williamson (1987) state that "evaluation of the affective variant hypothesis is
difficult because it is well established that depression accompanies many chronic psychiatric and

The Treatment Of Bulimia Nervosa
Author: Haley McDaniel, Pharm.D. Candidate

Question:
47. Should topiramate be considered for the treatment of bulimia nervosa?
Answer: The drug Topiramate is a sulfamate–substituted derivative from the monosaccharide D–
fructose that is known for its anticonvulsant and antimigraine actions.1 Therefore, it is helpful for
patients with seizures and migranes. Epilepsy is a specific example of what this drug is used to treat.
Topiramate is different from other antiepileptic drugs because it is thought to block the spreading of
seizures instead of lowering the threshold like other antiepilepsy drugs. 2 Although the exact
mechanism that Topirmate cannot be identified, it is currently being observed from biochemical
studies. Scientist have observed that the drug blocks voltage–dependent sodium channels, augments
the activity of gamma–aminobutyric acid, antagonizes the AMPA/kainite subtype of glutamate
receptor, and inhibits carbonic anhydrase. 1 Should this medicine be used to treat bulimia nervosa?
Bulima nervousa is a disease that causes patients to engulf large amounts of food in a short amount

mortality rate of any mental disorder, the mortality rates reported on those who suffer from eating

variance in the reported number of deaths caused by eating disorders is because those who suffer

Battling Bulimia? This Is What It Can Do To Your Teeth Bulimia is a serious condition where you
constantly alternate between gorging on food and then vomiting it back up. It can destroy your

As part of your recovery from bulimia, you'll need to work closely with your dentist to repair
damage to your gums and teeth in order to restore your oral health. Here's what you need to know
about bulimia and dental health. How Bulimia Affects Your Teeth Vomit is acidic, so when you
vomit frequently, your teeth are exposed to a lot more acid than they would be otherwise. This wears
away tooth enamel, which leads to the development of cavities and discoloration. Gum disease is
common too, so your teeth may even become loose, and you may experience bleeding from your
teeth and gums. In addition to pain from toothaches, you'll probably have sensitive teeth because the

it is related to a person being subjected to criticism based on their weight/ shape and eating habits.
This is the first of studies that take a look at a year prior to having bulimia nervosa. This study was
conducted through a control case study which is a study that looks at both a group that does have a
disorder and a group that does not have the disorder. It also determines if a factor affects either of
the groups and how that factor affects it. The study observed three separate group of women. The
women with eating disorders were recruited from eating disorder treatment settings, which were

According to Leigh Cohn, bulimia is an addiction that takes over a persons thoughts and self
esteem. The longer the person is bulimic, the harder it is to quit (19). There is a growing trend
toward bulimia. Even though more women are affected than men, the most common age of bulimics
range from 13–40 years of age. These people are commonly known to be high achievers or sports
players. One source from The Royal College of Psychiatrists states, high achievers are affected
because they see bulimia as the missing link to the perfectism puzzle (Internet). It's also common
for anorexics to turn bulimic because anorexics starve themselves. When they finally do eat, they
feel out of control and purge. In fact, 60% of all anorexics eventually turn bulimic. There are several
forms of bulimia. The most frequent form is binge and purge. Another form of bulimia is when a
person binges really badly, and then fasts for days. This form actually makes the person gain weight
because it will slow down their metabolism , and when they start eating again they will actually gain
weight. In a book entitled When Food's a Foe, the author suggests that another form of bulimia
occurs where a person is obsessed with over exercising is extremely popular for athletes (32). There
are many methods of purging, but the most common methods are: self induced vomiting, over use of
laxatives or diuretics, enemas, abuse of diet

1.) Eating disorders are self–critical, negative thoughts and feelings about body weight and food.
This results in eating habits that disrupts normal body function. There are two types of eating
disorders, anorexia and bulimia. Anorexia gives an extreme fear of weight gain and a distorted view
of their body size and shape. Bulimia gives people habitual binge eating and will make them purge.
2.) It is unsure of what causes eating disorders, but it is suspected that psychological, genetic, social,

Anorexia Vs Bulimia
Eating disorders such as anorexia or bulimia cause dramatic weight fluctuation, interfere with
normal daily life, and can permanently affect their health.Generally, eating disorders involve self–
critical, negative thoughts and feelings about body weight and food, and eating habits that disrupt
normal body function and daily activities. People with anorexia have an extreme fear of weight gain
and a distorted view of their body size and shape. As a result, they strive to maintain a very low
body weight. Some restrict their food intake by dieting, fasting, or excessive exercise. People with
anorexia try to eat as little as possible, and take in as few calories as they can, frequently obsessing
over food intake. Bulimia is characterized by habitual binge eating and purging.
Some research suggests that media images contribute to the rise in the incidence of eating disorders.

even overweight. With anorexia, the body goes into starvation mode and the lack of nutrition can
cause a drop in blood pressure, pulse, and breathing rate, hair loss and fingernail breakage, loss of

Essay On Bulimia Nervosa
Bulimia Nervosa is another eating disorder discussed in the DSM–5 (2013), that is most prevalent in
later adolescence and young adulthood in females (p. 437). In order for one to be diagnosed, one
must meet four criterion. Criteria A is recurrent episodes of binge eating characterized by the
following; eating in a discrete period of time (2 hours), and amount of food that is larger than most
individuals would eat in a similar period and the second a sense of lack of control over eating during
the episode (DSM–v, 2013, p. 346). Women who are bulimic tend to eat a vast amount of food in a
short period of time just to purge as a result. This intensity it of consuming, must happen in a
moderate amount of time in order to be considered bulimic. Better understood by Abraham (2008)
she states, an episode of binge eating occurs when the woman's resistance to eating fails and she
has an irresistible desire to eat (p. 280). This type of behavior represents a sense of lack of control.
Women who binge have a hard time stopping and controlling what and how much they are
consuming.

Although some characteristics may exist in both disorders, there is certain criterion that makes them
distinct. The huge distinction between the two is the inappropriate compensatory behavior that
Bulimics exhibit (DSM–V, 2013). In other words, people who binge eat don't necessarily result in
getting rid of the food afterward. Another differential diagnosis would be someone who is Anorexia
nervosa, binge eating /purging types. As stated in the DSM–V (2013), these types of behaviors can

Bulimia nervosa, more commonly known simply as bulimia or binge and purge disorder, is an
eating disorder that affects 1 in 4 college–aged women in America, or 1 in 10,000 Americans. The
most common misconception concerning bulimia is that it is simply a physical or mental problem.

Bulimics usually weigh themselves frequently, even several times daily. Bulimics also suffer from
an emotional cycle of guilt, pain, depression, and highs. They feel pride when they succeed in
starving themselves; guilt, pain, and depression when they eat; and the high usually follows a
purge. The cycle becomes an emotional outlet. Bulimics are often perfectionists, those who feel they
have severe standards to live up to. Those who feel that they cannot control their lives may turn to
eating disorders as a means to feel in control of some aspect of themselves. They tend to have an
intense fear of becoming a failure, and letting others down. Many doctors and members of society
feel that society, with its media–fed images of beauty and perfection, is responsible for the disease.
Food becomes a night–and–day obsession, causing them to withdraw from their families, as well as
school and social lives. Bulimics will often refuse to eat in front of other people, and will find any
sort of excuse to avoid meals in groups. They may sneak food for bingeing when no one else is
around. Bulimics may sometimes run to the bathroom following any form of food intake. The
disease is habit–forming. Bulimia is a disease that affects the entire body, as well. The first marks
are often seen on the fingers and hands of the diseased individual. They will usually have small cuts,

Unlike interpersonal psychotherapy, with the use of medication, CBT attains several forms of
intervention and models that can be used for certain situations. These forms are tailored not only to
the affected patient but also toward the patient 's family. There is therapy for the perfect,
overprotective, and chaotic family. These forms all have specifics that set their therapeutic sessions
apart, but are similar in that they all begin with a technique called joining. Joining is basically an
establishment of alliance between the therapist and the family (Killian). Therapists are advised to
discover how the family members feel toward the problem in this situation. A way of ensuring
family involvement would be to set specific guidelines about the affect patient 's behavior and the
family 's reactions toward the behavior. For example, a therapist may initiate a plan in which the
patient must be responsible for replacing the family food in which he/she binges on. This activity
will enhance the removal of the rest of the family to be in constant fear for the patient; it will also
allow the patient to begin to regain control of one aspect of his/her life. Common goals within this
type of family include regulation of emotional availability between the parent(s) and the bulimic
patient, facilitation of direct communication, and negotiation of conflict and its resolution (Killian).

BULIMIA NERVOSA 307.51 (F50.2)
Introduction
Individuals diagnosed with bulimia nervosa undertake frequent binge eating, followed by expelling
the food, typically by inducing vomiting, but also through exercising and the use of laxative agents,
diuretics, and enemas (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). The binge eating occurrences are
often prompted by a negative perception of one's body image, temporarily alleviated by the binge
eating episode. Since the individual with bulimia nervosa is overanxious about body weight,
purging of the food is viewed as a necessity. This is in contrast to binge eating disorder, which does
not involve the purging of food after an excess of food consumption (Bulik et al., 2012).
Furthermore, although ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There is an additional feature that must be present alongside these symptoms in order for a patient to
be diagnosed with bulimia nervosa: any binge eating events followed by compensation needs to be
relatively frequent. Specifically, if these events take place at a minimum of one time per week –
over a 3 month timespan – then a diagnosis of bulimia nervosa may be made. Although these are the
symptoms that must be present in order for a diagnosis of bulimia nervosa to be made, there are
often other symptoms that accompany bulimia nervosa. Signs of psychosis have been found in
patients with eating disorders like bulimia nervosa (Miotto et al., 2010). Moreover, those with
bulimia nervosa frequently have the feeling that there is something flawed with their mind, and that
others are at fault for their problems (Miotto et al., 2010). In addition, there is evidence that a
feeling of loneliness is correlated with the occurrence of bulimia nervosa (Levine, 2012),
highlighting the psychological dynamics that are at play behind this disorder.
Causes of Bulimia Nervosa: from genetics to environment
The environmental and biological mechanisms that underlie bulimia nervosa have been researched
in some depth. The principle mechanisms that give rise to bulimia nervosa may be classified into
two groups: genetic variables at play and environmental factors that impact the patient.

Anorexia And Bulimia Essay
INTRODUCTION
The rise in eating disorders has captured the attention of both medical and dental professionals. A
dental hygienist may be the first professional to detect an eating disorder due to the oral
complications that are associated with the condition (Foster, 2017). Eating disorders are described as
a persistent disturbance of eating behavior or behavior intended to control weight, which
significantly impairs physical health or psychosocial functioning (Fairburn Walsh, 2003). There
are several types of eating disorders and sufferers may have a combination of disorders. Among
eating disorders, anorexia and bulimia nervosa are the most common (The British Psychological
Society, 2004). This review will discuss the psychological and behavioral traits associated with
anorexia and bulimia nervosa, as well as the systemic and dental consequences.
Research has shown, most cases of anorexia and bulimia nervosa begin during adolescence, with the
growth of social media being linked to one of the causal factors (The British Psychological Society,
2004). There is some evidence suggesting roles of genetic, neurobiological and sociocultural factors
as well (The British Psychological Society, 2004). Morbidity and mortality rates may be higher
because individuals with eating disorders often deny the extent of their fasting, binge–eating and
purging behaviors (Steinberg, 2012).

Another factor that might contributes to the cause is genetics. Researches show that often, the
relatives of the patients have these disorders. Eventhough both are eating disorders, there are many
characteristics that distinct them from each other. People with Bulimia are more worried about how
other people think about them. They are more active and are engaged in more sexual activities than
the people with Anorexia. Victims of Anorexia Nervosa are more obsessive about their diets. They
eat almost nothing and are always counting calories or literally weighing their food. Bulimics have
less control over their diet. They have an eating behavior different from Anorexics. Often, people
under the influence of Bulimia are compulsive eaters. Symptoms of Bulimia Nervosa include eating
large amount of good before inducing vomiting. There are two types of this disorder: purging and
non–purging. Purging include going to bathroom and throwing up after meals. They binge and

"What you eat in private is what you wear in public." This common twenty–first century quote is plastered all over social media sites as a "motivational" quote and a "friendly reminder" for women to eat healthy and workout. Yet, the quote also seems to define an episode of binge eating by bulimics, which is the consumption of an amount of food that is larger than most individuals would eat in a similar period of time under similar (American Psychiatric Association, 1980). The excessive consumption of food must also be accompanied by a sense of lack of control and usually occurs in secrecy or as inconspicuously as possible. An indicator of loss of control is the inability to refrain from eating or to stop eating once started. The consideration of an episode is subjective to the occasion too, as the quantity of food that might be regarded as excessive for a typical meal might be considered normal during a holiday meal. Individuals often do not stop binging until they are to the point of being uncomfortably full (American Psychiatric Association, 1980). The larger the amount of food ingested, the more rapid the emptying rate which is why bulimia is rarely successful as a means of weight control; however, bulimic activity can result in gastric ulcers and other ... I was 17 years old when I began to have the premature symptoms of Bulimia Nervosa. I was a cheerleader for a national competition squad, and was worried about being able to tumble to my full potential because of the extra weight that I was carrying. An episode usually begins with a binge, A binge is defined as eating in a discrete period of time an amount of food that is definitely larger than most individuals would eat under similar circumstances, (American Psychiatric Association, p.545). This would not include eating small amounts of food all day. The binge is typically triggered by dysphoric mood states, interpersonal stressors, intense hunger following dietary restraint, or feelings related to body weight, body shape, and food, (American Psychiatric Association, p.546). Some say that binge eating is accompanied by a sense of lack of control you have in your life, and in my case this was exactly right. There is a sense that you have no control over your life and everything involved in it, so to compensate for the lack of control you have. You try to control your weight and you're eating habits. Some individuals with Bulimia Nervosa have described a binge as a feeling of dissociation, from their lives and everything around them. They have set their life at that time around their episode and think of nothing else. The binge it self will often last until the Individual is either uncomfortable or even to the point that they are painfully full. • 12. Bulimia Nervosa Effect Cause and Effect Essay Bulimia Nervosa is a psychological and severe life–threatening eating disorder described by the ingestion of large amounts of food in a small amount and then doing things such as misusing laxatives and self–induced vomiting. Bulimia Nervosa can be caused by abuse and/or trauma. For instance, a woman could be in an abusive relationship where the man is constantly calling her fat. She may binge eat and then purge right after to lose the weight. Purging is the act of trying to control body weight by misuse of laxatives, self–induced vomiting, or diuretics. Another cause of Bulimia nervosa could be having a job or profession that focuses on body image. An example of this is: a man going for an interview at a modeling agency. The manager says everything about the man is perfect except his excess body fat around his abdomen. So he begins to binge eat for about a day and then vomits for a day. • 15. The Treatment Of Bulimia Nervosa Author: Haley McDaniel, Pharm.D. Candidate Date Answered: November 2, 2015 Question: 47. Should topiramate be considered for the treatment of bulimia nervosa? Answer: The drug Topiramate is a sulfamate–substituted derivative from the monosaccharide D– fructose that is known for its anticonvulsant and antimigraine actions.1 Therefore, it is helpful for patients with seizures and migranes. Epilepsy is a specific example of what this drug is used to treat. Topiramate is different from other antiepileptic drugs because it is thought to block the spreading of seizures instead of lowering the threshold like other antiepilepsy drugs. 2 Although the exact mechanism that Topirmate cannot be identified, it is currently being observed from biochemical studies. Scientist have observed that the drug blocks voltage–dependent sodium channels, augments the activity of gamma–aminobutyric acid, antagonizes the AMPA/kainite subtype of glutamate receptor, and inhibits carbonic anhydrase. 1 Should this medicine be used to treat bulimia nervosa? Bulima nervousa is a disease that causes patients to engulf large amounts of food in a short amount of time, which then causes them to take action by purging or taking laxitives to get rid of the large sum of food they consumed. 3 There was a study that used a randomized, Double–Blind, Placebo–Controlled Trial, to test if Topiramate had an effect on the behavior, body weight, and quality of life related to health in patients suffering from ... In order for one to be diagnosed, one must meet four criterion. Criteria A is recurrent episodes of binge eating characterized by the following; eating in a discrete period of time (2 hours), and amount of food that is larger than most individuals would eat in a similar period and the second a sense of lack of control over eating during the episode (DSM–v, 2013, p. 346). Women who are bulimic tend to eat a vast amount of food in a short period of time just to purge as a result. This intensity it of consuming, must happen in a moderate amount of time in order to be considered bulimic. Better understood by Abraham (2008) she states, an episode of binge eating occurs when the woman's resistance to eating fails and she has an irresistible desire to eat (p. 280). This type of behavior represents a sense of lack of control. Women who binge have a hard time stopping and controlling what and how much they are consuming.
