Hummingbird Speech
Have you ever wondered just how fast a Hummingbird's wing beats? Or how many times a
Hummingbird's heart beats per minute? Well, I am here to enlighten your bird loving souls. For
those of you who don't know, a Hummingbird's wing can beat up to 200 times per second, and a
Hummingbird's heart while in flight can beat up to 1,250 times per minute. Special muscles in their
"shoulder" areas allow for them to fly in all directions, up, down, left, right you name it. These are
just the basic facts, now let's get into the good stuff.
Hummingbirds include the smallest birds in the world, but they belong to one of the largest group of
birds, the Trochilidae family. These enchanting birds are found in deserts, mountains, and plains, but
most live in tropical rainforests. Their name refers to the humming sound made by their tiny, beating
wings; each species creates a different humming sound, depending on the speed of its wing beats. In
the Caribbean, people call the hummingbird el zunzun. These energetic dynamos have been around
for ages; hummingbird fossils found in Germany are said to be more than 30 million years old.
There are 328 hummingbird species. The smallest is the bee hummingbird from Cuba, and the
largest is the giant hummingbird from South America. Hummingbird bills come in different sizes
and shapes, too. The long, slender bill is adapted to collect nectar from flowers. The bill protects the
long, split tongue and allows each hummingbird species to feed on specific

Environmental Factors Influence The Hummingbird
This review article focuses on if environmental factors influence the hummingbird, Selasphorus
rufous, and its ability to conserve water as well as if their diet is influential to their ability to
constantly produce dilute urine regardless of a high salt consumption. This experiment was
conducted using eight hummingbirds from the Selasphorus rufous species in Wyoming. Nectar
feeding birds who ingest floral nectar consume an adequate amount of potassium but lack sufficient
sodium, therefore due to the excess amount of water consumed by nectar feeding birds, they
occasionally rely on the electrolytes from their poor diets. The researchers studied the
osmoregulatory capacity of these eight hummingbirds by altering their feeding diet to electrolyte–

Mary Oliver Hummingbirds Analysis
Everyone has experienced a dark path in life, when accepting defeat and giving up seemed like the
only option. Feeling desperate and defeated; learning that hope means finding that little bit of light
in all the darkness. Throughout history, hummingbirds represent the symbolic meaning behind hope.
Due to the small features of the birds, hummingbirds represent hardships or challenges plagued by
negativity. Teaching one to come out with a positive outlook and optimism. In the poem,
Hummingbirds, by Mary Oliver, the author uses the image of Hummingbirds to portray a symbol of
hope in a time of obscurity.
Hummingbirds can be characterized by their resilience and their ability of determination. Due to the

Four Types Of Mayfly's Adaption
Suction: the force that, by a pressure differential, attracts a substance or object to the region of lower
pressure. Adaption 5 There are four different types of mayfly's: the swimmers, the clingers, the
burrowers, and the crawlers. All of these different types of mayfly's have physical adaptations on
their body to help them do the thing they were designed to do. This is an important adaptation
because no matter if it's swimming, clinging, crawling, or burrowing, all mayflies depend on the
thing they're good at to get food, hide, get away from predators, and thrive. The mayfly nymphs that
depend on swimming to live have flat body's and strong legs spread out from each side. Having a
flat body help's reduce the power of the stream and strong legs help push the mayfly forward when
it swims. These adaptations allow swimming mayfly's to fight against the water's current and move
freely even in the swiftest streams. Being fast in the water can also help these mayfly nymphs to
escape from predators. Some mayfly nymph species that are good at swimming are Baetis,
Acentrella, and Isonychia mayflies. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At the end of each leg there is a claw that hooks onto the object that a mayfly is clinging to. The
clinging mayfly's in faster currents have more thick and short claws, which strongly clamp on the
submerged object they're hanging on. Other clinging mayflies like the genus Rhithrogena have
adapted further to water conditions and have claws like suction cups. These claws and strong legs
help mayfly's that cling to stay put in fast–moving waters. Species of clinging mayfly nymphs
include Epeorus, Stenonema, Stenacron, and Leucrocuta

Hummingbirds Adaptations
Hummingbirds are amazing creatures with many incredible adaptations for survival. There are over
300 species around the world today. Read on to find out more about about these unique members of
the animal kingdom. Beaks Hummingbirds eat a variety of foods including nectar, insects, and
spiders using their perfectly adapted beak. When food is scarce they will even eat tree sap! The
hummingbird's long narrow beak allows it to feed from flowers that other nectar eaters cannot reach.
They lap up nectar with their 'W' shaped tongues, which have hairs on the tip. The beak is also very
flexible, allowing it snatch insects right out of the air! Since they use so much energy when they fly,
they have to feed almost all the time, eating one–and–a–half to three times their own body weight
each day! ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of these adaptations is migration. Many species of hummingbirds head north in the warmer
months. For example, the ruby–throated hummingbird will fly as far north as Canada to feed and
mate throughout the summer. As fall approaches, they fly south to escape from the harsh winter
climate. Unlike birds like geese, the hummingbird migrates on its own. Scientists think they may do
this to make themselves less noticeable to predators. Hummingbirds also have the largest brain in
relation to its body size amongst all birds. This allows them to remember any place they have feed.
As you can imagine, it helps to know all of the places you can go to eat. In addition to their great
memory, these birds are also amazing fliers. Some hummingbirds beat their wings up to 80 times per
second and they are the only vertebrate that can hover in one place. They can also fly upside down
and backwards! Hummingbirds vs. Bees Buzzzzz...was that bee that just flew by? No, it was a

The Hummingbird Research Paper
Even though the hummingbird has such unhuman qualities that are indeed quite fasinating; the bird
itself is such a majestic complex creature that it can, in many ways, relate to people in the real
world. However, not everything that involves the characteristics of an animal needs to be physical.
In fact, some animals are rather symobilic and they also have personalities that are very similar to
human beings. In another ways, it is nice to notice the difference we have with a certain animal,
such as how we adpat or even our survival instincts. Therefore, If I could picture myself as any
animal, it definitely would be a hummingbird. (109) When we think of a hummingbird, we typically
think of a bird that is acceptionally fast and tiny. Now, I probably wouldn't consider myself to be fast
in the slightest, but I would consider myself to be rather small. I stand approximately 5 feet 3 inches.
In the pedestrian world that would put me in the short category. I may not be the tinest kind of

They are also a common spirtual animal for opening love and lightness back into your soul, where
you once thought it was gone. I relate to this because whenever my family is going through a tough
time, I am always there to pick them back up and remind them that everything is going to be okay.
My positive attitude reflects on others and sometimes changes the outcome or even their output on
the stuff they were once struggling with before. I love helping people and making others happy. I
can understand why the hummingbird symbolizes these certain traits. It is hard not to catch a
glimpse of the bird when you can, while not having a smile on your face that is full of joy and
peace. In addition to the qualities I or others may share with the hummingbird, there are some things
we do not share with this certain creature. One of the

Characteristics Of Bee Hummingbirds
Bee hummingbirds are interesting birds that you may or may not know about. They are from Cuba
and are the smallest birds in the world. In this paper you will discover more about bee
hummingbirds and their special features and lifestyle. Prepare to be amazed by them!
Description
Bee hummingbirds are the smallest known species of hummingbird, and also the smallest known
species of bird in the world! They have a record of about 5cm, and are often mistaken for bees
because of their size. They're so small, that they can easily perch on the tip of one of your fingers!
They weigh about 2 grams. That's about the weight of two one dollar bills! Their lifespan is only
about 3–5 years long. The males have a blue back with a black head and white under feathers. They
have black spots on the tip of each tail feather If the male is breeding, their plumage turns brightly
colored, with a bright red , almost pink, head. They have blue spots on the tips of their wings and
like most hummingbirds, they have a gorget, a patch of feathers that are the same color as the head
that come down onto the neck on each side. The females have a mostly green back, and white under
feathers and their tails are tipped white rather than black. The females are also slightly larger than
the males. Habitat Bee hummingbirds live mostly in Cuba and possibly some smaller islands around
it.( see pic) They prefer to be in lower altitude and live mostly in and along the edges of the forests

The San Antonio Museum Of Art
Before going to the San Antonio Museum of Art I searched their website to get an idea of the
paintings displayed. One stood out to me online however, it wasn't until I saw it in person the
magnitude of the true beauty of the painting. Martin Johnson Heade's, Passion Flowers with Three
Hummingbirds, exudes something special to vis ualize not only for its bright floral colors, but the
heart of the painting is the three hummingbirds in their natural element. I've always loved nature,
and have enjoyed some bird watching in my time. This would be a type of painting I would hang in
my home, as the birds symbolize tranquility and peace in nature; doing what they do naturally. They
equate the miracle of life in not only the birds, but the flora and fauna around them; with the sky
illuminating in the background. Heade was heavily influenced by his surroundings. He was vastly
interested from a very early age in hummingbirds and their effect on natural selection and their
environment (St. Rosemary Educational Institution). His aspirations from Charles Darwin led him to
the tropics where he painted several humming bird and orchid paintings as his subject matter,
including Passion Flower with Three Hummingbirds. This set of genre paintings of tropical subjects
depicted his interest in mood and light instead of topographically accurate views ("Martin Johnson
Heade Biography"). Heade had a fascination with how light interacted with the environment (St.

Hummingbird Adaptations Essays
Hummingbirds have evolved certain behavioural and physical traits which allows for them to be
more energetically efficient, such as specialized storage and digestion adaptations, feeding and
flying adaptations and breathing adaptation. Hummingbirds are extremely small and their muscles
for flight are highly oxygen–dependent and require large amounts of energy. Hummingbirds are one
of the smallest endotherms and any energetic output can be metabolically stressful. The
hummingbirds' small body size means that they have very little room for energy storage and
therefore often endure energetic and metabolic stresses. They are the one of the oldest aves, dating
back to some 33 million years ago and have evolved certain energy efficient ... Show more content

Hummingbirds have also evolved a unique relationship with some plants which have evolved
specializations such as bright coloration and large petals in order to entice hummingbird to feed
from them. These specialized flowers do supply nectar in each flower; however, these plants will
allow the hummingbird to meet its nutritional requirements in one visit, and by doing so
hummingbirds are forced to visit many flowers and in turn are cross–pollinating the flowering
plants. This behavior has allowed for a close mutualism to evolve between these specialized plants
and hummingbirds. (Welch & Suarez 2008).
Flight adaptations
Hummingbird feeding behaviour has evolved so that they hover in flight, however due to this
behaviour they have lost the ability to use their feet which now only serve for perching. (Lotz,
Nicolson 1996). They compensate for this devolution by alternating their wing angle during flight
which in turn has allowed them to use less energetic output during flight (Gass & Garrison 1999).
Another adaptation that hummingbirds have evolved to allow them to hover in midair is the rate at
which they flap their wings. This unique flying behaviour has created specific skeletal and flight
muscle adaptations such as a large keel and rigid weight bearing girdles which allows for greater
muscle attachment from wing to abdomen and in turn an increase

Song of the Hummingbird Essay
Fountain of Life Imagine living in a civilization that practiced human sacrifice and ritual dances,
and then one day that civilization no longer exists because another culture decided to conquer them.
These people are known to modern society as the Aztecs. In Graciela Limon's novel, Song of the
Hummingbird, she illustrated how a culture like the Aztecs or Mexica, can quickly diminish when
there are people such as the Spanish that have very limited understanding about certain subjects.
Some people may say that the Aztecs were slaughtered because the Darwinian principle of natural
selection even applies to mankind. This concept was perceptible when the Spaniards marched with
horses, advanced technology, and armor. But through this novel, ... Show more content on

Also, Huitzitzilin stated that she saw Paloma (her daughter) years after when she went with Captain
Cortés to Spain. Huitzitzilin saw the change in her when she asserted, "When we were paraded for
the benefit of those people, it was Paloma who outdid herself in mocking my deformity. By that
time, I understood the language in which she spoke, and I had to bear the anguish she caused me
when she ridiculed me, making the others laugh." (207) In essence, many readers can see why
Paloma mocked the Mexica woman, and another reason she did this was that maybe it was one way
to get back at her former community which she no longer accepted since childhood. Just like
Paloma, many children have had outbursts against either their parents or community. I remember the
time when I was in kindergarten, and I temporarily ran away from home. I felt that my dad had not
treated me right because he slapped me for peeing in the garden. In Indian tradition, discipline had
been taught by using some sort of force such as the hand, and I was too young to understand that my
father was actually trying to help me. I ran away over to the next neighborhood circle, and I
remained there for about a couple of hours. My dad started to scream my name, and that was when I
realized that what I was doing was stupid. I returned that moment to my father, and he had
apologized but stated, "Ravi, you need to learn that this is how we were taught how to do discipline

Comparison Between 'The Hummingbird And Last Rights'
Within the threaded binding of the novel, The Hummingbird, author, Stephen Kiernan, states:
"Mortality is life's way of teaching us how to love." This quote stands as the core of this compelling
bildungsroman. Being known for using the setting of death and war in his previous titles such as
"The Curiosity", "American Patriotism", and "Last Rights" Keirnan is specifically expansive with
the relationship between life and death. He divides this novel into two different narratives: one, the
the story of the main character, Deb Birch, a dedicated hospice nurse and wife to a soldier struggling
with PTSD; the other, a framework narrative, an unverified manuscript of the only attack on
American soil during World War 1 apart from Pearl Harbor. Through alternating narratives,
historical context, and a medical setting, Kiernan pieces together the puzzle of two intertwining
stories to reveal the reflection death has on the living and the powerful presence of love. There is
much overlap between the two alternating stories. The Hummingbird opens with the identification
of Deborah Birch as she reveals the harsh but forgving aspects of her job being a hospice
nurse. From the start readers get a sense of the dedication and passion that she puts in her work, a
feeling that her work means something, as she states in the following excerpt: As always, the last
thing I did before leaving the office was run my thumb down the back of the hummingbird. It was

issue of the New York Times. In this article, Gorman tells us how a hummingbird's tongue works.
He describes hummingbirds as "extreme" and their wings and tongues are at a fast pace. The author
brings up Dr. Rico–Guevara who describes hummingbirds as "fascinating" and "bold". In Dr. Rico–
Guevara's publication, "Proceedings of the Royal Society B" , describes how the hummingbird's
tongue works to draw up the nectar. Dr. Rico–Guevara tells Gorman that many hummingbirds come

Stunned by his observations and his memory of my dresses, it takes me a moment to reply. "Yes, it

"It's a lot like the one you wore for your audition, isn't it?"
"It's very similar. I suppose I should come clean, that first dress belonged to Alice, but now I have

"Blue suits you, it matches your eyes." He reaches out to glide his fingertips along the side of my

"It matches your tie." Though it sits perfectly on his shirt, I adjust the knot of his tie nonetheless.

fighter pilot. They can hover, fly backwards, and even upside down for a short time. They are a
medium sized species with the males sporting an iridescent ruby red throat patch and the females
sport a lovely iridescent green and grey. They are stocky for a hummingbird, and are better suited
for Northern climates. They range from western North America to Baja California, from the
southern tip of Alaska to southern California. The males can even sing, but it sounds more like
high–pitched little squeaks and screeches. They are most often found in forests, backyards, fields,

If a bird returns to the same area every year and expects to find food, it would really have a hard
time if all of a sudden its field of wildflowers became a new housing development. Migration is
energy intensive and exhausting, the bird might not be able to find food before it simply runs out of
fuel and perishes in its sleep. With pesticides and round–ups being sprayed in ever higher
concentrations on wildflowers and weeds, more of it is entering the systems of these hummingbirds.
Not only are the flowers being effected, but the small insects the hummer preys on as well. They

On a nice spring day the buzzing sound of a hummingbird flying can often be heard, and people
look out the window for a chance to see the intriguing little bird. There are over three hundred and
fifty species of hummingbirds some as far south as Chile and others as far north as Alaska.
Hummingbirds are beautiful creatures that range five cm. to twenty cm. tall. The remarkable birds
are the only type of birds who can fly backwards and are characterized by their long beaks. With so
many different types of these fascinating birds most people don't stop to think they could be in
danger. Hummingbirds are an endangered species because of the causes of they're endangerment,
what they need to survive, and the effects of their endangerment on humanity. There are many
different causes of hummingbird endangerment. When a species is considered endangered it means
the species is seriously at risk of extinction. One of the biggest causes is hummingbird's
vulnerability. Hummingbirds small size makes them very vulnerable to larger predators. With so
many larger predators catching the little birds their numbers are dropping. Climate change is really
hurting the small birds. As the climate changes the hummingbirds who migrate get confused when
they have to leave. If they stay in a cold area too long and don't go south the harsh winter can kill
them. Most of the hummingbirds however are getting killed when their habitats are destroyed.

Making The Hummingbird Robots
As a team, David, Mackenzie, Lilly and I worked together to create a robot. The goal of our robot
was to pick a penny up off of the table and place it in the box with just a click of a button. The
materials used were cardboard and scrap metal, which we used to build a majority of the robot. To
make the robot function we used the Hummingbird Robotics Kit. We used duct tape to make the
penny sticky so it was able to be picked up. My group worked very hard for this robot to work. A
few problems we faced with the robot was how big of a piece of tape to use to pick up the penny and
what kind of tape to use, and with the timing of how much string to rotate back and forth for the
string to move and how much to make it turn. With the website we had to use to program the robot

about the different types of anchor text below: Generic anchors – As the name suggests, generic
anchors are normal anchor texts like "click here" or "go here." For example, in the sentence "Click
here to get your free eBook," click here is the generic anchor. Branded anchors – A branded anchor
is any anchor that uses the brand name as text. These are the safest to use unless your website is an

Analysis Of The Book ' Joyas Voladoras ' By Published...
In the book "Joyas Voladoras" by published editor Brain Doyle, Doyle begins talking about
humming birds. The heart of a humming bird, and its physical aspects. Doyle then elaborates on the
title that it translates to flying jewels, which the first explorers named them. Doyle is talking about
life, the center of all living things life, the heart and the different aspects of the heart. The memory
that can be stored there, the heartbeats, the size and even how a heart can be broken. Doyle presents
his ideas differently but causes the reader to connect emotionally, factually, and fairly personally.
Doyle takes a different approach on this essay for the beginning, he makes a move on the reader.
Doyle provides the reader with the assumption that the short essay will cover hummingbirds.
Leading to the effect of grabbing the attention of different types of readers, ones who are interested
in humming birds or readers who know little and are just curious. Doyle states "consider the
hummingbird for a long moment" (147). Doyle's presentation of the beginning of his essay now
affected specific readers, it pulled in readers from an animal interest. Providing readers with the
assumption that while reading this essay they should consider the hummingbird, and causes them to
imagine a hummingbird for a moment. This move works in the text because the reader's focus is pin
pointed to a specific topic from the beginning, and from that intro Doyle explains in later sentences

Desert Southwest
In the Desert Southwest, we are blessed with two different blooming seasons, spring and fall. Roses
don't really enjoy the heat of summer and go into summer dormancy, meaning that they just exist
and don't grow or bloom significantly. However, with the days growing shorter and summer
temperatures begin to cool, it is time to lightly prune your rose bushes, which will stimulate new
growth. In September, begin by pruning back about 1/4 of the total size of the rose bush, (this isn't
the major pruning that occurs in the winter). As always, prune back to an outward facing bud at an
angle of 45 degrees. Seal any pruning cuts larger than the diameter of a pencil with Elmer's glue to
prevent borers. It is also time to fertilize your roses in preparation ... Show more content on

Keeping a hummingbird feeder is a good idea, but there are other things you need to do to keep the
little birds happy and humming in your garden. Hummingbirds, unlike most other animals, do not
find their food source based on smell. Because of this, brightly colored plants and feeders are what
attract the tiny creatures to your garden. Red is the best color to attract them. Keeping a clean, full
feeder provides hummingbirds with the energy they need to keep flying around your garden and to
other stops on their feeding route. The sugar water solution, however, is not their main food source.
Hummingbirds actually get the nutrients and proteins they need for survival from soft–bodied
spiders and tiny insects on the plants in your garden. Their outrageous metabolisms burn up calories
so quickly, they need the sugar and flower nectars to keep them energized so they can hunt. The
traditional sugar/water solution calls for one part sugar to four parts water. Do not boil the water to
make syrup. Just mix it in room temperature water. Some gardeners have experimented with
solutions that have a higher concentration of sugar to water. There is no research to show that high
concentrated solutions of sugar harms the hummingbirds. Their metabolism operates so much
differently than most animals. A higher concentration of solution just means they can drink less
often to get the energy they need to hunt. It

Nesting: A Brief History Of Hummingbirds
Centuries ago, their plumage was used to adorn Native American ceremonial costumes. Even today,
some people believe that the hummingbird's glittering plumage contains mythical powers. However,
most of us merely enjoy watching these sparkling gems of the bird world.
Hummingbirds live only in the Americas and three species occur in Florida. The ruby–throated
hummingbird is by far the most common hummer in our state. This feathered jewel is about 3 inches
long and weighs as little as a penny (¼ ounce). Its name describes the most brilliant part of the
mature male's plumage. The throat feathers contain air bubbles that give off an iridescent red tone in
full light. Their backs are metallic green, and they have green and black tail feathers. As a
Neotropical migrant, the ruby–throat's range extends from Canada to central Florida, with most
wintering in Mexico and South America. They are arriving this month in northeast Florida. ... Show

The nest is a walnut–size structure of plant down, adorned with lichens, moss and bound with spider

about hummingbirds is their helicopter–like flying stunts. Not only can hummers suspend their
bodies in midair, they can also fly backward, upward, even upside down. These maneuvers are
possible because of a unique design that allows the wing to move very freely and in almost any
direction at the shoulder. Soaring is the only maneuver they cannot perform. Contrary to popular
belief, hummingbirds do not hum. The sound is made by their rapid wing movements (50 to 200

Hummingbirds:
Smallest bird on earth Hummingbirds are fascinating birds that are always fun to watch. These birds
are able to hover in mid–air, dart from side to side, go straight up or down, or even backwards. They
can out–fly and out–maneuver birds hundreds of times their size. There are many factors that
contribute to the hummingbirds ' ability to fly so easily through the air. A hummingbird 's wings are
shaped so that they are slightly rounded on the top. "Their wings flaps 15–80 times per second,
depending on the type of species they are. The Giant Hummingbird 's wings beat 8–10 beats per

The Venturi effect is evident when the hummingbird holds it 's wings close to it 's body. The rapid
air flow helps the bird maneuver quickly. "Hummingbirds are durable only in life. In death they are
delicate, their wings are hollow and fragile, thus almost never fossilize. This was one of the reason
that the recent discovery of 30–million–year–old fossil bird that remains may include an ancestral
hummingbird.". Its fossil specimens had long, slender bills ,and shortened upper wings bones topped
by a knob. Surprisingly, fossils were found in the southern part of Germany which was far away
from the modern hummingbird territory. "Hummingbird 's aggression were shaped by sipping nectar
as often as every minutes. They compete by challenging and bullying each other in mid–air; post up
and pirouette, dive to the grass, and paddle backward in dances of dominance that end suddenly as
they begin. They will compete each other up in tall mountains near the equator that offer rich
ecosystem at a variety of elevations.". "Hummingbirds are very small birds with a high metabolism,
with heart rates can reach as high as 1,260 beats per minutes, therefore they must be fed constantly."

protein for hummingbirds. Hummingbirds can consume up to 50% of their weight in sugar, the

The hummingbird is one of the most unique animals on our planet. They are equipped with freaky
flying abilities and fantastically fast traits, all which make them the distinct animals that they are.
How everyday can be a struggle for these nectar consuming flyers just puts me in awe.
Hummingbirds have multiple special characteristics that help them to survive in the wilderness.
Hummingbirds have a heart rate of 1,200 bpm when flying, and take about 250 breaths per minute.
Hummingbirds can beat their wings up to 200 times per second, which, as you may have guessed,
takes up a lot of energy. This helps them to move forwards, backwards, hover, and even move
upside down. Hummingbirds spend most of their days gathering nectar to use as energy. These
frequent flyers are also quite small and light. The smallest hummingbird, the Bee Hummingbird, is
only 5 cm in length while the largest hummingbird, the Giant Hummingbird, is 20 cm in length.
Most hummingbirds weigh less than a nickel. This helps them move around quickly and efficiently,
and also helps them to gather nectar from small flowers. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For starters, hummingbirds are surprisingly intelligent for their minuscule size. Hummingbirds have
the largest percentage of brain size to body size of all the species of birds at 4.2%. They can also
remember which flowers they have visited and how long it takes a flower to refill. It takes
hummingbirds lots of energy to fly, and they even use lots of energy while perching. This is why
hummingbirds enter a hibernation–like state called torpor which slows down their heart rate down to
1/15 of what it is normally. Hummingbirds can also see near ultraviolet light, which is why colors

2567 : The Family Of The Black Hummingbird Society
Last night I hired a private detective to follow me.
His name was 2567.
My hyper–active fantasy saw that true to folklore, he strode from the café's open door, donned with
a dark wool trench coat, and gripping an ebony briefcase. All the signs of a deductive reasoner
where there, from the constantly roaming grey mist–like eyes to the slight scholarly scowl. 2567
glanced at objects as if they held immeasurable clues to something far beyond itself.
And he glanced at people as if they were only objects that happened to be able to move.
The high–school cashier and the middle–aged baker didn't hold his gaze for long–though the floral
wallpaper seemed to intrigue him for a split second longer.

His bounty was a Magistrate's Pardon after all–a high official token that would pardon all the past
crimes of a single individual. In the mind of the Head of the Black Widow Alliance, using outlaws to
catch another outlaw is highly effective.
But thoughts of grandeur and panic can be washed away with a drink or two. Once the coffee was
brought over and the waitress a certain distance away, the conversation resumed. 2567 brought out a
clear packet with fine white crystals, shook some of it into his cup, and stirred it in his coffee. "Your
file informs me that you're an alcoholic," I stated, taking a thorough glance at 2567's lightening
coffee, "It said nothing about cocaine." Smiling and showing slightly crooked, but white teeth, 2567
replied, "Thought I'd try something new this week. Last week it was morphine, and the week before
that, PCP."
I paused for a moment, letting the bittersweet scent permeate towards me. Much sweeter than sugar.
Costa Rican's must've laced it with something else.
I own this particular brand, and my brother owns the cartel, I would know.
"Speaking of the near future," started 2567, "I came here hoping you'd know a way to stop the
trackers permanently."
"Why yes, Mr. 2567. I have my own particular methods," I looked him in the eye, "But first, let us
discuss the contract."
"Of course," 2567 smiled knowingly, "I, 2567, will agree to serve Mr. Lucius and the Black

Anna Hiekkapelto's Hummingbird 'And The Exiled'
This paper will analyze Anna Fekete in "The Hummingbird", "The Defenceless" and "The Exiled"
by Kati Hiekkapelto. These are the books in the Anna Fekete series and are of the Nordic Noir
genre. I will first discuss how Anna is a merge of first generation and second generation of female
detectives. I will then examine how her change in perspective on the significance of family and
relationships throughout the series have led to this merge. Lastly, I will analyze how the
discriminated refugees from all three books act as a mirror of Anna. From the class discussion, it has
been established that Anna Fekete aligns with the traits of a second generation female detective.

Description it has a mass around 1.6–2 g and a length 2.0–2.4. The male is slightly smaller than the
female. Compared to other small hummingbirds, which often have a slender appearance, the bee
hummingbird looks rounded
As the smallest bird in the world, it is no larger than a big insect and, as its name suggests, is
scarcely larger than a bee. Like all hummingbirds, it is a swift, strong flier.
The brilliant, iridescent colors of the bee hummingbird's feathers make the bird seem like a tiny

the bird.

Analysis Of Song Of The Hummingbird
"Song of the Hummingbird" was written by Graciela Limon . The book is about an Aztec princess
Huitzitzilin who talks about what happens to her during the Spanish conquest. Huitzitzilin decided
to tell her story to Father Benito who is one of the main characters in the book. At the end of the
book, Huitzitzilin dies and Father Benito finally sees the truth through her eyes and her story. The
main idea or the lesson that this book is trying to teach a person is that you should not automatically
judge a person until you get to know them. The book "Song of the Hummingbird" caused me to
have a rollercoaster of emotions and the lesson that I liked the most from this book was that you
should give someone a chance before you judge them. The lesson that the book teaches the students
is that you need to have the strength and you need fight for what you believe in no matter what the
punishments are.
"Song of the Hummingbird" demonstrates strength because Huitzitzilin had the strength to tell
Father Benito what actually happened and was not afraid of what the punishments she might have
gotten. One quote that shows the strength that Huitzitzilin was when she was telling her story to
Father Benito "I was alive, and never again would this happen to me. When I opened my eyes, I
realized that I would be free because pain had liberated me" (Limon 64). Huitzitzilin is telling
Father Benito how she was able to overcome her obstacles and how she was free from the pain.

Information About Hummingbirds. Yes, it is the annual battle of the hummingbirds here in north

each hummingbird claiming a feeder of its own for few days before moving on down south. This
time of year, my yard becomes a war zone between hummingbirds as well as against yellow jackets
and bees!
Hummingbirds are very territorial and will jealously guard "their" feeder from all other hummers
who want a sip of the sweet nectar. Although my many feeders are spread quite a bit apart so more
hummingbirds can feed in peace, there appears to be a Ruby–throated female that is determined to
defend three feeders. As she squeaks and zips over to a feeder that another hummingbird dared to
approach, other hummingbirds converge on the feeder she just left, sneaking some nectar while she
is away. She will viciously fly straight for the intruder, sometimes even flying right into them,
chasing him away. She'll perch on top of pole from which the feeder hangs, looking around as if to
say, "See? I got him and I'll get you if you try anything stupid like trying to get some of my nectar."

Theme Of Conflict In The Song Of The Hummingbird
In the book the "Song of the Hummingbird "written by Graciela Limon, the main conflict between
Father Benito and Huitzitzilin regarding to what history is, is that they both come from different
worlds/times, the Spanish were Eurocentric, and their religion was different. Father Benito, a monk
who is called to a convent near Mexico City in 1583. Huitzitzilin an elderly woman is asking for a
confessor. In her first confession, he discovers that she had information of the invasion of Cortes and
the Spanish. Although the story it is told quite different from what he had read and learned in Spain.
He forcefully listens to her confessions and also writes down her perspective as to what really
happened when Cortez arrived and took their land.
Both Huitzitzilin and Father Benito come from different worlds. Huitzitzilin was an eighty–two–
year–old woman. Born in Tenochtitlan what is now today known as Mexico. Her and her people
were of the Aztec tribe and called themselves the Mexica. She experienced at first hand the coming
of Cortes and his men. As well as the suffering and the end of her people and home as she once
knew it. On the other hand, Father Benito was a twenty– seven–year–old priest born in Spain.
Huitzitzilin tells Father Bentio, "What I am remembering happened many years before you were
born. But perhaps you know some of the details of those times when your captain and your four–
legged beasts came across the waters to infest our world" (Limon 13–14). This

Art Interaction: Frida Kahlo's Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird
Art is the essence of emotions, expressed through the canvas to fulfill an artist's ego and reflect their
inner self. Frida Kahlo one of the many women who revolutionized art, was a great example of the
strength of women, and their expression of daily life through art. Frida lived from 1907–1954; at the
age of 18 she had an accident that left her paralyzed, she began to paint more frequently to express
herself. Kahlo is considered a surrealist, due to her art being subconsciously done, although Frida
always mentioned "They thought I was a Surrealist, but I wasn't. I never painted dreams. I painted
my own reality". She ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The book titled, Frida Kahlo's Still Lifes by Salomon Grimberg states, "Because of her accident and
illness, she was confined to her home a great deal of the time, but her still lifes are as reflective of
her internal reality as are herself portraits"(24). Frida Kahlo's art was a way to express her emotions,
although her accident subjugated her into a "still life" she managed to express her internal reality
through her self– portraits. In addition, the self–portrait, shows a thorn necklace around her neck in
which a lifeless black hummingbird hanged. Hummingbirds are recognized by their flamboyant
colors full of life, although by painting a lifeless hummingbird it shows that perhaps she thought that
not being able to move meant her life was slowly perishing away. Furthermore, her internal reality
conveyed the pain she felt by not being able to do many things, her own body restrained her from
being happy.
Frida Kahlo expressed her heritage through images that both portrayed her Aztec and her religion,
embracing her identity. The artwork Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird demonstrates two aspects of
her identity, the thorn necklace around her neck expresses the "Aztec practices where priests
performed self–mutilation with agave thorns and stingray spines. The dead hummingbird is sacred
to the chief god of Tenochtitlan, Huitzilopochtli, the god of sun and of war" (Helland 11). In the art

Ignis Avem And The Hummingbird : The Genetic...
Among the millions of unique organisms that inhabit the Earth, one of the most breathtaking of all
these creatures is the Ignis avem, more commonly known as the fire bird. This fascinating creature's
unique genetic makeup allows for its fascinating features and traits which separate it from the rest of
the natural world as one of the most complex creatures alive. The Ignis avem is a multicellular
organism that is classified as an animal due to its reptilian and bird–like attributes. These traits
originate from its DNA, 40% of which resembles that of an alligator, 20% of a hummingbird, 20%
of a falcon, and a final 20% originating from bald eagles. Each of these genetic relatives of the Ignis
avem contribute a feature which allows it to be the deadly predator that it is. For example, the
hummingbird's unique wings are exhibited by the fire birds ability to flap its wings at intense speeds
and change direction in the matter of seconds, allowing it to ambush it's pray effectively. In addition,
the alligators dominance in the fire bird's genetic makeup is shown by its long, dagger filled snout
which allows the fire bird to catch jumping fish and quick–moving birds with a single snap of its
mouth. Lastly, the falcon and bald eagle facets of the fire bird are shown through its keen eyesight
from great heights, as well as its deadly talons. Essentially, the firebird's unique ancestors and
genetic relatives lend themselves tremendously to its unique DNA and traits which make it the

Galarza interacts with Don Catarino, Gustavo, Jose, his mother, and his aunt in an enormously
respectful way that was considered widely acceptable at the time. However, in modern times, this
level of respect seems to be rarely visible in most parts of our society. Personally, I believe this
moral's inclusion in the book is vital because it demonstrates to youth and adolescent readers the
proper way that adults should be treated. While the book does an excellent job of showing the
determination and labor of the men of
Hispanic households, it particularly does well in showcasing the immense difficulty that women of
the time period were faced with. For example, Ernesto's mother does not have his father to assist in
raising him, therefore, she lives with her sister and his husband as a result. This shows the mother's
priorities are aligned because rather than be ashamed of having to seek refuge with a family
member, she simply puts her son's comfort and life above all and swallows her pride. Furthermore,
as a woman of the household she helps create multiple meals every day for the entire family.
Unfortunately for her, however, women were expected to eat last and as a result, she would have to
wait patiently to eat the meal she cooked regardless of how hungry she was. His mother also shows

Hummingbirds Mary Oliver
Hummingbirds and children often inspire a sense of happiness, freedom, imagination, and being
worry–free. These traits send off a feeling of nostalgia to remind those watching them of their
childhood. Though an unusual comparison, author Mary Oliver connects these two together in the
poem, "Hummingbirds," by employing an image of hummingbirds to express a sense of childhood,
using a personal experience and in general throughout various literary devices, such as
personification, simile, symbolism, amongst others. Oliver expressed a sense of childhood was
through an image of hummingbirds. In the text, "The female, and two chicks, each no bigger than
my thumb," (Oliver 1–2) symbolizes a family with a parent and two babies. This line can bring
people a sense of nostalgia by reminding them of their old days being a young child. This line can

Relationships In The Hummingbird
With regards to love, Anna does not yearn for it like most women, which is a classic trait of the
second generation female detective. Without question, Anna prefers short term relationships where it
is purely sexual. In "The Hummingbird", Anna is involved with Petri and Zoran. When Petri asks if
they can meet up, Anna thought that he "sounded as though he was begging and it irritated her"
(Hiekkapelto 126). 146 This clearly indicates Anna's dislike for commitment and she emphasizes to
her mother that she is "not looking for a man" (Hiekkapelto 229). Anna's relationship with Zoran
differs from Petri as she seems to have developed romantic feelings for him. When Anna "felt a bit
lonely", she called Zoran (Hiekkapelto 211). This surprises him because Anna is not "the clingy
type" and reinforces the fact that she does have feelings for him (Hiekkapelto 211). Family now
plays an important role in Anna's life and its role is starting to affect her thoughts on having a
family. Although Anna seems to have feelings for Zoran, she ultimately ends the relationship with
him in "The Defenceless". At last, she realizes that "by spending the odd night in Zoran's arms", it
had cost her a friend which was Zoran's wife (Hiekkapelto 258). As mentioned before, Anna is
constantly lonely due to homesickness. However, it may also be due to the fact that Anna is
beginning to wish for someone to care for her or even to have a family with. She is reluctant to be in

Feeding wild birds is a big business that Americans spend over 4 billion dollars on each year and 2
billion more on feeders. My bird café is small, and my feeder isn't always filled and ready for a bird

how they approach the feeder is interesting. Chickadees are unafraid and friendly. They flutter in,
wait for me to fill the hopper, and chirp away "hurry, hurry". Then they'll get a sunflower seed, head

Hummingbird Wing Beats 200 Times Per Second

  • 1. Hummingbird Speech Have you ever wondered just how fast a Hummingbird's wing beats? Or how many times a Hummingbird's heart beats per minute? Well, I am here to enlighten your bird loving souls. For those of you who don't know, a Hummingbird's wing can beat up to 200 times per second, and a Hummingbird's heart while in flight can beat up to 1,250 times per minute. Special muscles in their "shoulder" areas allow for them to fly in all directions, up, down, left, right you name it. These are just the basic facts, now let's get into the good stuff. Hummingbirds include the smallest birds in the world, but they belong to one of the largest group of birds, the Trochilidae family. These enchanting birds are found in deserts, mountains, and plains, but most live in tropical rainforests. Their name refers to the humming sound made by their tiny, beating wings; each species creates a different humming sound, depending on the speed of its wing beats. In the Caribbean, people call the hummingbird el zunzun. These energetic dynamos have been around for ages; hummingbird fossils found in Germany are said to be more than 30 million years old. There are 328 hummingbird species. The smallest is the bee hummingbird from Cuba, and the largest is the giant hummingbird from South America. Hummingbird bills come in different sizes and shapes, too. The long, slender bill is adapted to collect nectar from flowers. The bill protects the long, split tongue and allows each hummingbird species to feed on specific ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Environmental Factors Influence The Hummingbird This review article focuses on if environmental factors influence the hummingbird, Selasphorus rufous, and its ability to conserve water as well as if their diet is influential to their ability to constantly produce dilute urine regardless of a high salt consumption. This experiment was conducted using eight hummingbirds from the Selasphorus rufous species in Wyoming. Nectar feeding birds who ingest floral nectar consume an adequate amount of potassium but lack sufficient sodium, therefore due to the excess amount of water consumed by nectar feeding birds, they occasionally rely on the electrolytes from their poor diets. The researchers studied the osmoregulatory capacity of these eight hummingbirds by altering their feeding diet to electrolyte– free ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Mary Oliver Hummingbirds Analysis Everyone has experienced a dark path in life, when accepting defeat and giving up seemed like the only option. Feeling desperate and defeated; learning that hope means finding that little bit of light in all the darkness. Throughout history, hummingbirds represent the symbolic meaning behind hope. Due to the small features of the birds, hummingbirds represent hardships or challenges plagued by negativity. Teaching one to come out with a positive outlook and optimism. In the poem, Hummingbirds, by Mary Oliver, the author uses the image of Hummingbirds to portray a symbol of hope in a time of obscurity. Hummingbirds can be characterized by their resilience and their ability of determination. Due to the hummingbirds deceiving size, "The female, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Four Types Of Mayfly's Adaption Suction: the force that, by a pressure differential, attracts a substance or object to the region of lower pressure. Adaption 5 There are four different types of mayfly's: the swimmers, the clingers, the burrowers, and the crawlers. All of these different types of mayfly's have physical adaptations on their body to help them do the thing they were designed to do. This is an important adaptation because no matter if it's swimming, clinging, crawling, or burrowing, all mayflies depend on the thing they're good at to get food, hide, get away from predators, and thrive. The mayfly nymphs that depend on swimming to live have flat body's and strong legs spread out from each side. Having a flat body help's reduce the power of the stream and strong legs help push the mayfly forward when it swims. These adaptations allow swimming mayfly's to fight against the water's current and move freely even in the swiftest streams. Being fast in the water can also help these mayfly nymphs to escape from predators. Some mayfly nymph species that are good at swimming are Baetis, Acentrella, and Isonychia mayflies. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At the end of each leg there is a claw that hooks onto the object that a mayfly is clinging to. The clinging mayfly's in faster currents have more thick and short claws, which strongly clamp on the submerged object they're hanging on. Other clinging mayflies like the genus Rhithrogena have adapted further to water conditions and have claws like suction cups. These claws and strong legs help mayfly's that cling to stay put in fast–moving waters. Species of clinging mayfly nymphs include Epeorus, Stenonema, Stenacron, and Leucrocuta ... • 9. Hummingbirds Adaptations Hummingbirds are amazing creatures with many incredible adaptations for survival. There are over 300 species around the world today. Read on to find out more about about these unique members of the animal kingdom. Beaks Hummingbirds eat a variety of foods including nectar, insects, and spiders using their perfectly adapted beak. When food is scarce they will even eat tree sap! The hummingbird's long narrow beak allows it to feed from flowers that other nectar eaters cannot reach. They lap up nectar with their 'W' shaped tongues, which have hairs on the tip. The beak is also very flexible, allowing it snatch insects right out of the air! Since they use so much energy when they fly, they have to feed almost all the time, eating one–and–a–half to three times their own body weight each day! ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One of these adaptations is migration. Many species of hummingbirds head north in the warmer months. For example, the ruby–throated hummingbird will fly as far north as Canada to feed and mate throughout the summer. As fall approaches, they fly south to escape from the harsh winter climate. Unlike birds like geese, the hummingbird migrates on its own. Scientists think they may do this to make themselves less noticeable to predators. Hummingbirds also have the largest brain in relation to its body size amongst all birds. This allows them to remember any place they have feed. As you can imagine, it helps to know all of the places you can go to eat. In addition to their great memory, these birds are also amazing fliers. Some hummingbirds beat their wings up to 80 times per second and they are the only vertebrate that can hover in one place. They can also fly upside down and backwards! • 11. The Hummingbird Research Paper Even though the hummingbird has such unhuman qualities that are indeed quite fasinating; the bird itself is such a majestic complex creature that it can, in many ways, relate to people in the real world. However, not everything that involves the characteristics of an animal needs to be physical. In fact, some animals are rather symobilic and they also have personalities that are very similar to human beings. In another ways, it is nice to notice the difference we have with a certain animal, such as how we adpat or even our survival instincts. Therefore, If I could picture myself as any animal, it definitely would be a hummingbird. (109) When we think of a hummingbird, we typically think of a bird that is acceptionally fast and tiny. Now, I probably wouldn't consider myself to be fast in the slightest, but I would consider myself to be rather small. I stand approximately 5 feet 3 inches. In the pedestrian world that would put me in the short category. I may not be the tinest kind of person in the world, but I know the struggles of dealing wtih a ... I relate to this because whenever my family is going through a tough time, I am always there to pick them back up and remind them that everything is going to be okay. My positive attitude reflects on others and sometimes changes the outcome or even their output on the stuff they were once struggling with before. I love helping people and making others happy. I can understand why the hummingbird symbolizes these certain traits. It is hard not to catch a glimpse of the bird when you can, while not having a smile on your face that is full of joy and peace. In addition to the qualities I or others may share with the hummingbird, there are some things we do not share with this certain creature. One of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In this paper you will discover more about bee hummingbirds and their special features and lifestyle. Prepare to be amazed by them! Description Bee hummingbirds are the smallest known species of hummingbird, and also the smallest known species of bird in the world! They have a record of about 5cm, and are often mistaken for bees because of their size. They're so small, that they can easily perch on the tip of one of your fingers! They weigh about 2 grams. That's about the weight of two one dollar bills! Their lifespan is only about 3–5 years long. The males have a blue back with a black head and white under feathers. They have black spots on the tip of each tail feather If the male is breeding, their plumage turns brightly colored, with a bright red , almost pink, head. They have blue spots on the tips of their wings and like most hummingbirds, they have a gorget, a patch of feathers that are the same color as the head that come down onto the neck on each side. The females have a mostly green back, and white under feathers and their tails are tipped white rather than black. The females are also slightly larger than the males. Habitat Bee hummingbirds live mostly in Cuba and possibly some smaller islands around it.( see pic) They prefer to be in lower altitude and live mostly in and along the edges of the forests ... • 15. The San Antonio Museum Of Art Before going to the San Antonio Museum of Art I searched their website to get an idea of the paintings displayed. One stood out to me online however, it wasn't until I saw it in person the magnitude of the true beauty of the painting. Martin Johnson Heade's, Passion Flowers with Three Hummingbirds, exudes something special to vis ualize not only for its bright floral colors, but the heart of the painting is the three hummingbirds in their natural element. I've always loved nature, and have enjoyed some bird watching in my time. This would be a type of painting I would hang in my home, as the birds symbolize tranquility and peace in nature; doing what they do naturally. They equate the miracle of life in not only the birds, but the flora and fauna around them; with the sky illuminating in the background. Heade was heavily influenced by his surroundings. He was vastly interested from a very early age in hummingbirds and their effect on natural selection and their environment (St. Rosemary Educational Institution). His aspirations from Charles Darwin led him to the tropics where he painted several humming bird and orchid paintings as his subject matter, including Passion Flower with Three Hummingbirds. This set of genre paintings of tropical subjects depicted his interest in mood and light instead of topographically accurate views ("Martin Johnson Heade Biography"). • 17. Hummingbird Adaptations Essays Hummingbirds have evolved certain behavioural and physical traits which allows for them to be more energetically efficient, such as specialized storage and digestion adaptations, feeding and flying adaptations and breathing adaptation. Hummingbirds are extremely small and their muscles for flight are highly oxygen–dependent and require large amounts of energy. Hummingbirds are one of the smallest endotherms and any energetic output can be metabolically stressful. The hummingbirds' small body size means that they have very little room for energy storage and therefore often endure energetic and metabolic stresses. They are the one of the oldest aves, dating back to some 33 million years ago and have evolved certain energy efficient ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hummingbirds have also evolved a unique relationship with some plants which have evolved specializations such as bright coloration and large petals in order to entice hummingbird to feed from them. These specialized flowers do supply nectar in each flower; however, these plants will allow the hummingbird to meet its nutritional requirements in one visit, and by doing so hummingbirds are forced to visit many flowers and in turn are cross–pollinating the flowering plants. This behavior has allowed for a close mutualism to evolve between these specialized plants and hummingbirds. (Welch & Suarez 2008). Flight adaptations Hummingbird feeding behaviour has evolved so that they hover in flight, however due to this behaviour they have lost the ability to use their feet which now only serve for perching. (Lotz, Nicolson 1996). They compensate for this devolution by alternating their wing angle during flight which in turn has allowed them to use less energetic output during flight (Gass & Garrison 1999). Another adaptation that hummingbirds have evolved to allow them to hover in midair is the rate at which they flap their wings. This unique flying behaviour has created specific skeletal and flight muscle adaptations such as a large keel and rigid weight bearing girdles which allows for greater muscle attachment from wing to abdomen and in turn an increase ... Descriptive Essay : ' The Hummingbird ' Slipping into the cool seat of the Shelby sends bolts of excitement dancing through my body, despite the apprehension of the terrifying ride I 'm about to receive. The hummingbird makes her appearance the moment Angelo slips into the driver seat beside me, along with the smile that emerges on my lips. As he closes his door, darkness envelopes us, allowing me to sit here and gleam without him noticing. I 'm not ready for the discovery of my infatuation with him just yet. A hand flutters to my curved lips, whereupon, I commence chewing on my fingernail. All ill feelings I had towards him earlier melt away. All I can do is nod. Without waiting for him to open my door, I exit the car and join by his side, allowing him to lead me to the office. The fear I endured from the poker game seeps through my memory, causing my steps to falter. With trepidation, my fingers twist into knots. I have to wonder if Angelo and I have a telepathic connection, as he reaches out a hand towards me just before opening the office door. As always, his hand feels warm inside mine, giving me a sense of security. He turns to face me, his warm eyes fill with love and concern. No words are exchanged, yet he silently encourages me to move forward with him. Upon entering the club, it 's like the poker game nightmare never existed as I 'm greeted by the familiar sights and sounds of the club. The clouds of tobacco have long since dispersed, leaving the familiar scent of cologne to pervade the air. Even the atmosphere returned to its usual, euphoric nature as the music pounds in my ears. Song of the Hummingbird Essay Fountain of Life Imagine living in a civilization that practiced human sacrifice and ritual dances, and then one day that civilization no longer exists because another culture decided to conquer them. These people are known to modern society as the Aztecs. In Graciela Limon's novel, Song of the Hummingbird, she illustrated how a culture like the Aztecs or Mexica, can quickly diminish when there are people such as the Spanish that have very limited understanding about certain subjects. Some people may say that the Aztecs were slaughtered because the Darwinian principle of natural selection even applies to mankind. This concept was perceptible when the Spaniards marched with horses, advanced technology, and armor. But through this novel, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Also, Huitzitzilin stated that she saw Paloma (her daughter) years after when she went with Captain Cortés to Spain. Huitzitzilin saw the change in her when she asserted, "When we were paraded for the benefit of those people, it was Paloma who outdid herself in mocking my deformity. By that time, I understood the language in which she spoke, and I had to bear the anguish she caused me when she ridiculed me, making the others laugh." (207) In essence, many readers can see why Paloma mocked the Mexica woman, and another reason she did this was that maybe it was one way to get back at her former community which she no longer accepted since childhood. Just like Paloma, many children have had outbursts against either their parents or community. I remember the time when I was in kindergarten, and I temporarily ran away from home. I felt that my dad had not treated me right because he slapped me for peeing in the garden. In Indian tradition, discipline had been taught by using some sort of force such as the hand, and I was too young to understand that my father was actually trying to help me. I ran away over to the next neighborhood circle, and I remained there for about a couple of hours. My dad started to scream my name, and that was when I realized that what I was doing was stupid. I returned that moment to my father, and he had apologized but stated, "Ravi, you need to learn that this is how we were taught how to do discipline our children. When I was a child, ... • 23. Comparison Between 'The Hummingbird And Last Rights' Within the threaded binding of the novel, The Hummingbird, author, Stephen Kiernan, states: "Mortality is life's way of teaching us how to love." This quote stands as the core of this compelling bildungsroman. Being known for using the setting of death and war in his previous titles such as "The Curiosity", "American Patriotism", and "Last Rights" Keirnan is specifically expansive with the relationship between life and death. He divides this novel into two different narratives: one, the the story of the main character, Deb Birch, a dedicated hospice nurse and wife to a soldier struggling with PTSD; the other, a framework narrative, an unverified manuscript of the only attack on American soil during World War 1 apart from Pearl Harbor. Through alternating narratives, historical context, and a medical setting, Kiernan pieces together the puzzle of two intertwining stories to reveal the reflection death has on the living and the powerful presence of love. There is much overlap between the two alternating stories. The Hummingbird opens with the identification of Deborah Birch as she reveals the harsh but forgving aspects of her job being a hospice nurse. From the start readers get a sense of the dedication and passion that she puts in her work, a feeling that her work means something, as she states in the following excerpt: As always, the last thing I did before leaving the office was run my thumb down the back of the hummingbird. Keeping a hummingbird feeder is a good idea, but there are other things you need to do to keep the little birds happy and humming in your garden. Hummingbirds, unlike most other animals, do not find their food source based on smell. Because of this, brightly colored plants and feeders are what attract the tiny creatures to your garden. Red is the best color to attract them. Keeping a clean, full feeder provides hummingbirds with the energy they need to keep flying around your garden and to other stops on their feeding route. The sugar water solution, however, is not their main food source. Hummingbirds actually get the nutrients and proteins they need for survival from soft–bodied spiders and tiny insects on the plants in your garden. Their outrageous metabolisms burn up calories so quickly, they need the sugar and flower nectars to keep them energized so they can hunt. The traditional sugar/water solution calls for one part sugar to four parts water. Do not boil the water to make syrup. Just mix it in room temperature water. Some gardeners have experimented with solutions that have a higher concentration of sugar to water. There is no research to show that high concentrated solutions of sugar harms the hummingbirds. Their metabolism operates so much differently than most animals. A higher concentration of solution just means they can drink less often to get the energy they need to hunt. It ... The main idea or the lesson that this book is trying to teach a person is that you should not automatically judge a person until you get to know them. The book "Song of the Hummingbird" caused me to have a rollercoaster of emotions and the lesson that I liked the most from this book was that you should give someone a chance before you judge them. The lesson that the book teaches the students is that you need to have the strength and you need fight for what you believe in no matter what the punishments are. "Song of the Hummingbird" demonstrates strength because Huitzitzilin had the strength to tell Father Benito what actually happened and was not afraid of what the punishments she might have gotten. One quote that shows the strength that Huitzitzilin was when she was telling her story to Father Benito "I was alive, and never again would this happen to me. When I opened my eyes, I realized that I would be free because pain had liberated me" (Limon 64). Huitzitzilin is telling Father Benito how she was able to overcome her obstacles and how she was free from the pain. Even after Father ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 63. Hummingbirds Research Paper Information About Hummingbirds. Yes, it is the annual battle of the hummingbirds here in north Texas. Late August through September brings swarms of migrating hummingbirds to the feeders, each hummingbird claiming a feeder of its own for few days before moving on down south. This time of year, my yard becomes a war zone between hummingbirds as well as against yellow jackets and bees! Hummingbirds are very territorial and will jealously guard "their" feeder from all other hummers who want a sip of the sweet nectar. Although my many feeders are spread quite a bit apart so more hummingbirds can feed in peace, there appears to be a Ruby–throated female that is determined to defend three feeders. As she squeaks and zips over to a feeder that another hummingbird dared to approach, other hummingbirds converge on the feeder she just left, sneaking some nectar while she is away. She will viciously fly straight for the intruder, sometimes even flying right into them, chasing him away. She'll perch on top of pole from which the feeder hangs, looking around as if to say, "See? I got him and I'll get you if you try anything stupid like trying to get some of my nectar." From dawn to dusk, she'll bully the other hummers. Clearly, this lil' lady is a hummer with an attitude! ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Mirian De Jesus ESE88–08 Timothy Glenn August 1, 2015 Art Interaction: Frida Kahlo's Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird Art is the essence of emotions, expressed through the canvas to fulfill an artist's ego and reflect their inner self. Frida Kahlo one of the many women who revolutionized art, was a great example of the strength of women, and their expression of daily life through art. Frida lived from 1907–1954; at the age of 18 she had an accident that left her paralyzed, she began to paint more frequently to express herself. The book titled, Frida Kahlo's Still Lifes by Salomon Grimberg states, "Because of her accident and illness, she was confined to her home a great deal of the time, but her still lifes are as reflective of her internal reality as are herself portraits"(24). Frida Kahlo's art was a way to express her emotions, although her accident subjugated her into a "still life" she managed to express her internal reality through her self– portraits. In addition, the self–portrait, shows a thorn necklace around her neck in which a lifeless black hummingbird hanged. Hummingbirds are recognized by their flamboyant colors full of life, although by painting a lifeless hummingbird it shows that perhaps she thought that not being able to move meant her life was slowly perishing away. Furthermore, her internal reality conveyed the pain she felt by not being able to do many things, her own body restrained her from being happy. Frida Kahlo expressed her heritage through images that both portrayed her Aztec and her religion, embracing her identity. The artwork Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird demonstrates two aspects of her identity, the thorn necklace around her neck expresses the "Aztec practices where priests performed self–mutilation with agave thorns and stingray spines. The dead hummingbird is sacred to the chief god of Tenochtitlan, Huitzilopochtli, the god of sun and of war" (Helland 11). In the art piece the thorn necklace is around her neck as ... Song of the Hummingbird Jon Ryan Professor Orona–Cordova Chicano Studies 115 17 September 2012 Expository Essay #1 Throughout the course of his novel Barrio Boy, Ernesto Galarza does a superb job of capturing the many intricacies and emotions that were associated with his culture during the time period in which he lived. Galarza's story encompasses his own personal experiences as well the condition of his surrounding environments and neighbors. Galarza also goes in depth about the terrain and location of the various cities he traveled to through the duration of his childhood. Although this story is designed to portray the early life of Ernesto Galarza, it also does a tremendous job of capturing the essence of Hispanic culture during his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Galarza interacts with Don Catarino, Gustavo, Jose, his mother, and his aunt in an enormously respectful way that was considered widely acceptable at the time. However, in modern times, this level of respect seems to be rarely visible in most parts of our society. Personally, I believe this moral's inclusion in the book is vital because it demonstrates to youth and adolescent readers the proper way that adults should be treated. While the book does an excellent job of showing the determination and labor of the men of Hispanic households, it particularly does well in showcasing the immense difficulty that women of the time period were faced with. For example, Ernesto's mother does not have his father to assist in raising him, therefore, she lives with her sister and his husband as a result. This shows the mother's priorities are aligned because rather than be ashamed of having to seek refuge with a family member, she simply puts her son's comfort and life above all and swallows her pride. Furthermore, as a woman of the household she helps create multiple meals every day for the entire family. Unfortunately for her, however, women were expected to eat last and as a result, she would have to wait patiently to eat the meal she cooked regardless of how hungry she was. His mother also shows qualities of a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 75. Relationships In The Hummingbird With regards to love, Anna does not yearn for it like most women, which is a classic trait of the second generation female detective. Without question, Anna prefers short term relationships where it is purely sexual. In "The Hummingbird", Anna is involved with Petri and Zoran. When Petri asks if they can meet up, Anna thought that he "sounded as though he was begging and it irritated her" (Hiekkapelto 126). 146 This clearly indicates Anna's dislike for commitment and she emphasizes to her mother that she is "not looking for a man" (Hiekkapelto 229). Anna's relationship with Zoran differs from Petri as she seems to have developed romantic feelings for him. When Anna "felt a bit lonely", she called Zoran (Hiekkapelto 211). This surprises him because Anna is not "the clingy type" and reinforces the fact that she does have feelings for him (Hiekkapelto 211). Family now plays an important role in Anna's life and its role is starting to affect her thoughts on having a family. Although Anna seems to have feelings for Zoran, she ultimately ends the relationship with him in "The Defenceless". At last, she realizes that "by spending the odd night in Zoran's arms", it had cost her a friend which was Zoran's wife (Hiekkapelto 258). As mentioned before, Anna is constantly lonely due to homesickness. However, it may also be due to the fact that Anna is beginning to wish for someone to care for her or even to have a family with. She is reluctant to be in her empty apartment and when she ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 77. Chickadees Feeding wild birds is a big business that Americans spend over 4 billion dollars on each year and 2 billion more on feeders. My bird café is small, and my feeder isn't always filled and ready for a bird and squirrel all day buffet. I'm more of a let it get empty and then I'll try to fill it in a couple days bird feeder. I do love watching them at the platform feeder, the most common type purchased. Even how they approach the feeder is interesting. Chickadees are unafraid and friendly. They flutter in, wait for me to fill the hopper, and chirp away "hurry, hurry". Then they'll get a sunflower seed, head to a limb, hold the seed in their toes and peck it open. Those little bundles can eat a lot too, coming back again and again. The Nuthatch is a nervous eater. He cautiously ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They're cheerfulness and energy inspire me on days when all else is cold, sleeping and silent. I can understand why 52.3 million Americans or 39% of us spend money on feeding birds. They're great company and even pay us back by taking care of pesky insects.
