Introduction Vacationing is nothing new to many individuals around the world. While many choose
to travel to resorts for their vacations, many find excitement embarking on cruise ships for multiple
destinations and activities for their vacations. As one of the largest tourism outlets, cruises are
constantly changing with new routes and destinations for customers, with bringing as many as 3000
on board passengers (Cite MANAGING CRUISE SHIPS). Cruise ships allow passengers a wide
variety of activities and leisure during their stay aboard and while docked. With the boats stopping
at numerous destinations in one week, each visit has pros and cons to the general areas being visited.
This paper will focus on the cons that occur from the widely populated ships visiting ports in the
Bahamas. More so, the problem being that these cruise ships are bringing thousands of visitors
weekly, yet are failing to support port destinations economically which leaves the port locals and
entrepreneurs suffering. Specifically this paper will look into the cause of the issue, which is mostly
the cruise ships and management teams of the cruise companies. Further, this paper will explore the
solution to how these cruise companies can better support the port communities and aiding to the

easy to forget how far the industry has come in these past twenty–five years. While cruise ships are
now situated around the globe in ports ranging from Europe to Australia, the Americas to Asia, and

Europa launched in 1981 followed by Carnival Cruise Lines' 35,265 gross ton mv Tropicale, Home

Yet while the second generation of cruise ships had gotten larger and carried over 1,000 passengers,

opposed to be new build, at 70,000 gross ton and able to carry 2,000 passengers, she tantalized the
industry with the potential for big ships. It would take eight years, but in 1988 Royal Caribbean
Cruise Lines responded by introducing the 73,192 gross ton mv Sovereign of the Seas, with a
capacity of 2,282, the first new build of this size since the rms Queen Elizabeth 2 in 1968.

including overcapacity. In 1980, there were only about thirty cruise lines and seventy–five ships

Waste–to–energy power plants are lowering the amount of waste we have in landfills and turning
that into energy to meet industrial needs. What if there was a way to shrink these power plants and
put them onto cargo and passenger ships? According to the Palm Beach Post, the Environmental
Protection Agency says, "a cruise ship with 3,000 passengers can generate 210,000 of gallons of
waste and sewage and 1 million gallons of grey water from showers and drains in a typical week."1
Most of the material that lands in these waters is not biodegradable. The majority of ships will dump
their waste into the ocean, while others will store it until they get back to land, only to dump the
waste into landfills.
There are four reasons why having small generators on ships would work:
1) The use of generators would create job opportunities;
2) The generators are environmentally safe;
3) There would be abundant source of waste to use as fuel; and
4) The generators would keep dangerous waste, like plastic, from entering the waters.
The technology to produce energy from waste has already been proven to work. With a small
generator, ships would be "recycling" the waste into energy that could be used for providing
electricity, transportation, and industrial needs.
Waste–to–nearby facilities have already proved to be a great investment on land.2 The facilities

Although the industry is beneficial from a life–cycle assessment point of view, over the years it has
gravitated toward countries with low labor costs, weak regulations on occupational safety, and
limited environmental enforcement. The "global shift" in the industry to countries with
comparatively weaker regulatory systems is of particular concern as ships contain many hazards that
can have significant detrimental effects on humans and the environment if not dealt with properly.
Currently, the global center of the ship breaking and recycling industry is located in South Asia,
specifically Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan. These three countries account for 70–80 percent of the

international market for ship breaking of ocean–going vessels, with China and Turkey accounting
for most of the rest. Only about 5 percent of the global volume of such vessels is scrapped outside
these five countries.
This study focuses on the SBRI in Bangladesh and Pakistan to get a better understanding of the
economics of the industry and the environmental impacts arising out of such activity and to explore
possible ways in which such environmental effects may be mitigated.

I never thought being a slave was as much as this. I knew they suffered, but not as much as them
preferring death over being alive. I can picture the situation as a horror scene as many slaves
shrieked, groaned, and cried as they died of diseases or maybe of hopelessness. After I read this

The Slave Ship by Marcus Rediker is a great fiction novel that describes the horrifying experiences
of Africans, seamen, and captains on their journey through the Middle Passage. The Middle Passage
marked the water way in the Atlantic Ocean between Africa and the Americas. The use of slaves
provided a great economy for the European countries due to the fact that these African slaves
provided free labor while cultivating sugar cane in the Caribbean and America. Rediker describes

Some Africans did not go without putting up a fight. For instance, Captain Tomba led many
villagers "in burning huts and killing neighbors who cooperated with slave traders" (14). He was
later captured and sent to the slave ship where he would be sold in the New World. The slaves also
resisted by refusing to eat. Most of them decided they would rather have death than to live the
