Literary Techniques In Prodigy
Prodigy is an example of science fiction novel. It can be considered sci–fi because, for one reason,
the advancements made in technology. In the time of the novel, they finally have jets that can take
off vertical instead of using a runway. As of now, all planes and jets use a runway to get in and out
of the air so they don't crash land. Another reason the novel is science fiction is because the signs of
contemporary life and signs of the futuristic life. Some signs of contemporary life is there are
classes – the elite families and the slum families. It is common that children belonging to poorer
families are homeless and hungry. Another contemporary sign is that disease is common within the
country; however, this disease – known as the Plague ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, though she uses many different types of literary approach to spice up her writing, she uses
a lot of flashbacks – especially with the character June – and figurative language throughout most of
the story. Some of the flashbacks include June thinking about memories with her brother before his
murder just a few weeks prior. Day also has a few flashbacks here and there about his family before
his dad disappeared, his mother being murdered by the government, his older brother – John –
taking his own life to save Day, and his younger brother – Eden – was taken by the government to
be used as a weapon. He also thought about his times when he was on the street: meaning, he
thought about when he first met Tess – his best friend – and their life together on the street before he
had met June. All in all, Lu used many flashbacks to explain the feelings and emotions the
characters were experiencing. Marie Lu also used many examples of figurative language. For
example, Lu writes, "The entrance yawns at us with its gaping mouth." Here she is personifying the
tunnel the trains usually go through to get in and out of Denver – one of the warfront cities of the
Republic. Another example of figurative language in the novel is, "My flood of words hangs in the
silence between us. I can't describe the emotion on his face – something lost, something ripped from
his gaze and strewn across the floor. A deep, quiet sadness that tears me

Analysis Of Two Kinds By Amy Tan
The most charming and testing relationship on the planet is the relationship between the mother and
the daughter. There are such a variety of elements required in this relationship. There is a unique and
unmistakable connection amongst mothers and daughters. The short story "Two Kinds" by Amy Tan
outlines the principle character Jing–mei's childhood and the impacts of her mother's high
expectation for her life. The mother pressures Jing–mei to exceed in America where everything is
possible. However, they come into a conflict when her mother becomes determined to make Jing–
mei into a child prodigy. The mother forces her daughter to take piano lessons; however, when it
comes time for the talent show, she fails unhappily. Her contention with her mother goes unsettled
for quite a long time. Thus, Amy Tan illustrates the difficult connection between an immigrant
Chinese mother and her American–born girl, Jing–Mei. Therefore, the author represents the
protagonist's evolving relationship with her mother, through symbolism and characterization.
To begin with, the author emphasizes on the special bond between the mother and the daughter,
using symbolism. For example, Amy Tan uses the piano lessons to symbolize the struggle between
the protagonist and the protagonist's mother. After watching a show on television called "Ed
Sullivan Show", the mother "traded house cleaning services for weekly lessons and a piano for [her
daughter]" (Tan 3). This shows how the mother sacrifices her time

Summary Of Amy Tan's The Joy Luck Club
America for immigrants is a land where everybody can become somebody. In Two Kinds, from an
excerpt the novel, The Joy Luck Club, by Amy Tan, Jing–mei's mother believed that her daughter
could become anyone that she wanted. Jing–mei only wanted to become herself. Jing–mei's mother
forced Jing–mei to become a prodigy. At first Jing–mei was excited to become a prodigy, however,
as time went on Jing–mei started to hate trying to become a prodigy. It never stopped her mother
from trying to make Jing–mei into a prodigy.Jing–mei's perspective of her own cultural identity, her
role as daughter, and how she sees American life was different from her mother because they were
born into two different cultures.
Jing–mei, American born, and her mother, Chinese born, came from two different cultural
perspective which causes them to have different views on cultural identity. Sujuan came to America
hoping her child will become a prodigy. When Jing–mei and Sujuan were watching TV Sujuan saw
Shirley Temple, and "at first mother thought I could be a Chinese Shirley Temple"(Tan 22). Shirley
Temple was an American child prodigy. This indicates that Sujuan saw her daughter as a Chinese
girl even though Jing–mei was born in America. This is significant because this was how her mother
viewed Jing–mei's cultural identity. Sujuan's vision of her daughter being a Chinese Shirley Temple
never happened because Jing–mei did not want to be anybody expect herself. As time continued
Sujuan kept on trying to

Character Analysis: An Abundance Of Katherines
What does it mean to matter? To make a difference? To be something or someone? In John Green's
novel, An Abundance of Katherines, Colin Singleton struggles with his existence and the meaning of
his life, as many other teenagers do. Colin, although, is not like most teenagers. Colin is the smartest
child in his town, he attended the gifted school that his mother taught at, and he had been dumped
by nineteen girls, all who were named Katherine, with a K. When Katherine XIX broke up with
Colin, it ruined his life, and left Colin, a self–centered know–it–all, wondering what to do with his
life. The love life of Colin Singleton, and the road trip he embarks on in An Abundance of
Katherines, demonstrates his character development from an underdeveloped child prodigy to a
lively teenager.
The character development of Colin Singleton is a complex adventure, but it began with a self–
centered former child prodigy who had recently broken up with his nineteenth girlfriend, Katherine.
"When it comes to girls (and in Colin's case, it so ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In An Abundance of Katherines, John Green effectively portrayed a successful character arc,
beginning with Colin as a self–centered and egotistical teenager, following to a stage of depression
where the protagonist was searching for his life's purpose, and ending at the peak of his arc. By the
conclusion of the novel, Colin's character is resting at the top of the roller coaster ride––the peak of
his character arc––looking out at the infinite and unpredictable future ahead of him. He is content
with who he is, satisfied with his life, and okay with not being able to predict every aspect of his
life. Who knows what the future has in store for Colin? The rest of his roller coaster ride lays ahead
of him, and with Green's victorious development of Colin throughout the novel, the reader can tell
that his future is

Is June A Prodigy In America
In fact, June grew up in a small neighborhood, in which she didn't not have as many opportunities as
she has now in America. As the mother comes to America she is experiencing a new life with bigger
and better things. Her intentions for making June a prodigy were to gain bragging rights respect
among small Chinatown, just like her friend, Auntie Lindo, whose daughter was "Chinatown's
Littlest Chinese Chess Champion. " The mother just wanted June to have a bright and better future
for her and to become a prodigy as she always visualized she'll be. Unlike the mother in, "Everyday
Use" she had no intention of gaining any other knowledge then the one she already had. She was
happy with what she knew of her heritage, but her daughter Dee knew

Summary Of Marie Lu's Prodigy
The way a person acts or thinks everyday may be influenced in many ways, such as the
setting.Settings could be a big impact to a character just as much as a small impact. For example, in
Marie Lu's Prodigy demonstrated the powerful effect the setting could make on a character,
especially in the most important setting in the book, the Republic. In the beginning of Prodigy, the
main characters, June and Day, are in a military city, las vegas. They felt scared, cautious and very
aware. But why would normal people feel scared in las Vegas? Well, setting may have a role in this.
June and Day are the most wanted criminals of the country, so they have to be careful not to draw
attention to themselves. So, they felt intimidated by the offers patrolling the streets and the risk of
getting caught. The text states, " Troops make their way up and down the street... This is a military
city, a world of soldiers...Day shakes his head slowly. He looks unsettlingly pale"(8). This illustrated
that the setting, las vegas, affected the characters. Las Vegas made Day feel uncomfortable. This
setting also made June think about the past few weeks of her life. The author writes, "Vegas is the
worst possible city for us to wander into by ourselves... I'm a criminal now, I'll never be able to go
back to the comforts of my old life. The thought leaves a sick, empty feeling in my stomach, as if I
miss being the Republic's darling. Maybe i do"(7).To reexamine, Vegas influenced June to reassess

Two Kinds Jing-Mei
In the short story "Two Kinds" the author, Amy Tan, suggests that when a pleading child chooses to
do something rather than being forced to do so he or she often becomes perfectly content with it. In
the story, Jing–Mei's mother believes that she is a prodigy and, therefore, forces Jing–Mei to take
several tests other prodigy students had taken. After failing most of them, Jing–Mei's mother has
given up hope, until she hears a child prodigy playing the piano. She enrolls Jing–Mei in piano
lessons with Mr. Chong, who is deaf. Feeling she can get away with not trying her hardest, Jing–Mei
does not bother to practice the piano. As a result, she ends up failing terribly at a talent show. She
becomes angry when, afterward, her mother still insists

Essay on Conformity and Rebellion
"Lead or Follow" Should I conform? Should I rebel? This has and always will be, a constant battle
struggled individually, or as a society. A certain amount of conformity needs to exist in life in order
to avoid disorder. This is the reason we have laws. Take those laws, rules, control, or even
expectations, to an extreme, and some form of rebellion is probable. Struggle with these opposites,
and you have a catalyst for war, or perhaps, being fired from a job. Literature represents life, and
this theme can be found at the root of many literary works. "The Lottery," by Shirley Jackson,
reflects blind conformity by the villagers with a hint of rebellion. Every June 27th the lottery takes
place; the prize for winning is death. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Jing–Mei feels differently though, "Unlike my mother, I did not believe I could be anything I
wanted to. I could only be me," (359/80) and she was correct for she had no natural musical talent.
Jing–Mei has a desire to please her mother, but an even stronger one to choose her own life. She
pacifies her mother by going to piano lessons but puts in no effort. Jing–Mei is "...determined to put
a stop to her blind foolishness," (356/48) but her mother's desire to create a prodigy to compete with
Aunt Lindo's daughter, keeps her focused on the impossible. That is, until Jing–Mei escalates this
conflict to its breaking point in rebellion. Stunning her mother, she shouts "Then I wish I'd never
been born! I wish I were dead! Like them," (359/77) referring to the twin daughters her mother lost
in China. Sadly, the mother's desire to have Jing–Mei conform to her expectations creates a constant
battle between mother and daughter, and, in rejecting those expectations, seeing disappointment in
her mother's face all too often causes Jing–Mei to feel, "something inside me began to die" (353/18).
In Hanan Mikha'il 'Ashrawi's poem, "Night Patrol" we get a more subtle view of conformity and
rebellion. It is of a soldier's inner battle to adhere to his duties, against his desire to be elsewhere.
The soldier finds himself in the "depths of confrontation I/ never dared to

Amy Tan's Two Kinds
For many of us growing up, it has been our mothers that played a crucial part in our lives in terms of
what made us into who we are today. Our mothers forgave us when it seemed like no one else could.
They comforted us when it felt like everything was going down hill. And they have loved us
unconditionally, especially during the times we needed it the most. However, there are times when
our mother's do things even if we don't agree with it. Take Jing–Mei and her mother from the story
"Two Kinds" by Amy Tan, for example. Jing–Mei is a girl raised by her overbearing mother, a
Chinese immigrant while struggling "to forge her own sense of identity in the face of her strong–
willed mother's dream that she become a prodigy" (Brent). Throughout the story, Amy Tan describes
the struggles that Jing–Mei faces between her ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Every idea about the essence of Jing–Mei's future to become this "prodigy" is caused by what her
mother watches on television and what she reads about in women's magazines and other
publications such as Ripley's Believe–it–or–not and Good Housekeeping. Her mother's first attempt
to transform Jing–Mei into this "prodigy" comes from television movies. She explains, "My mother
thought I could be a Chinese Shirley Temple. We'd watch Shirley's old movies on TV as though they
were training films" (Roberts). While Jim–Mei continues to struggle to find who she really is, her
mother on the other hand becomes determined to turn her into this prodigy. We begin to see that
Jing–Mei mother demands her to try on multiple identities, such as being this Shirley Temple, but
the Chinese version of course, a genius child, or even an expert at playing the piano. However, this
determination that Jing–Mei becomes a prodigy threatens to suffocate the whole meaning of her
being who she wants to

Essay about Richard Russo's "Dog" and Amy Tan's "Two Kinds"
Richard Russo's "Dog" and Amy Tan's "Two Kinds" are stories that illustrate the negative impacts
parents sometimes have on their children and the unintended consequences that occur as a result of
their parenting. In "Dog," Henry Devereaux grows into an adult who has difficulty connecting
emotionally with others, a man who is not easy, and though entertaining, is not comforting. In "Two
Kinds," Jing–mei was a failure many times over in her mother's eyes, finally dropping out of college
and only accepting of herself later in life.
In the story "Dog," Henry Devereaux was raised by parents who were aloof and unavailable. His
parents were English professors who were "academic nomads," and his father was an "academic
opportunist" who was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Eventually she relented and told Henry that, with conditions, he could earn a dog. But the conditions
imposed were numerous and severe, and in reality, Henry would be incapable of fulfilling them,
therefore not getting the dog would be his own fault. Henry is set up for failure by his mother, and
he states: "the fact that she thought such a plan might work illustrates that some people should never
be parents and that she was one of them."
Henry was a normal boy and did all of the normal things young boys do: making noise, being busy
and active, nosing around in the refrigerator, and asking questions – all part and parcel of being a
normal child. But he was brought up to believe he wasn't a "model boy." His parents were constantly
interrupted by him – his mother while she was reading and grading papers, and his father so much
so that he spent most of his time in his office on campus, joining them only at mealtimes. His father
wished to remain "blissfully unaware."
Henry's father finally brought home a dog, but it was on his terms. The dog was an old, arthritic,
barely ambulatory Irish setter, who was "wonderfully mannered and meticulously groomed," and
"the kind of dog you'd get if you really didn't want a dog or to be bothered with a dog." Henry knew
as soon as he saw the old dog that "he had been betrayed and outsmarted."
Henry's final helping of guilt was assigned when he ran out of the house in anger

Check-Mate In Simic's Prodigy'
A couple of lines throughout "Prodigy" jumped out and set a tone for the poem. The first line "I
loved the word endgame," is close to the top and at that point in the poem the reader is only thinking
chess, but in chess one does not say "endgame" they say "check–mate". Simic chose the word
endgame to foreshadow to what he soon began to allude to, and that is World War II. The other line
is "The white King was missing," which is using the direct term of a chess piece, the white king, but
what else is Simic trying to get through? Simic states "The white King was missing," rather than
saying "The white king piece was missing" opening the mind to the semantic difficulty. Simic writes

The Conflicts Of Conflict In Two Kinds By Amy Tan
"Two Kinds" by Amy Tan is a story that shows a battle between the narrator and her mother, for
control over the narrator's life. Her mother wanted her to become a prodigy, but she wanted to be
anything other than her mother's idea of a successful American. So, throughout the short story "Two
Kinds" she's determined to not quit the fight to no longer have her mother push for her success. Her
determination leads to her rebelling against her mother's ideas, and finally puts a stop to the idea of a
prodigy. "Two Kinds" demonstrates different forms of conflict which allowed for the narrator to
realize that her mother's crazy antics were to help her find what she was good at. The narrator
conquers the twoness in her life after eighteen years by using the conflicts of her past, and they lead
to her growth in maturity and her development as a writer, which allows for her to reconfigure the
battles with her mother. Twoness is "the fact or condition of being two or doubleness" (Oxford
Dictionary). Twoness is also known as duality which is "the condition or fact of being dual or
consisting of two parts or natures" (Oxford Dictionary). Conflict is "a competitive or opposing
action of incompatible, or antagonistic state or action (as of divergent ideas, interest, or persons). It's
a mental struggle that resulted from incompatible or opposing needs, drives, wishes, or external or
internal demands; along with the opposition of person or forces that gives rise to the dramatic in
drama or fiction" (Oxford Dictionary). One indication of conflict is the cultural difference between
the narrator and her mother. Her mother was born and lived her life in China, while the first–person
narrator was born and raised in America. America is known as the land of opportunity and the land
of dreams, which gave her mother the idea that the first–person narrator could be a prodigy. In other
words, from the mother's point of view, the narrator could be whatever she put her mind to. Her
mother came to San Francisco, a place that gave the opportunity for all to make a life for
themselves. Her mother believed "you could be anything you wanted to be in America. You could

Analysis Of Two Kinds By Amy Tan
In the short story Two Kinds by Amy Tan, she writes about a child named Jing–mei and her
experiences with her mother pushing her to become a prodigy, all while her mother deals with being
a Chinese immigrant that just moved to the United States. The two countries obviously share very
different cultures and this plays a part in the story as she pushes Jing–mei to live 'The American
Dream'. Her mother strongly believes that in America you can be whatever you want to be. This, to
some, may not be true, however this idea is strongly pushed in the Chinese culture. This is shown
when Jing–mei fails to do any prodigious task that her mother puts in front of her which leads to her
mother being ultimately disappointed in Jing–mei. Her failures ends up causing a huge argument
between Jing–mei and her mother. The argument could be called the climax of the story. This
confrontation wouldn't have happened if Jing–mei's mother didn't have the huge idea that The
American Dream is a legitimate thing, and Jing–mei's mother wouldn't have that perception of
America if the Chinese culture didn't present the United States as such a place. Based on Chinese
culture and perspectives, there are numerous fallacies concerning the American Dream, and these
are displayed in Amy Tan's short story "Two Kinds".
Chinese culture is obviously extremely different than the culture in the United States, and not many
Chinese citizens actually know what it's like to live in America. This could lead to the United States
being represented incorrectly. Most Chinese citizens have the impression that America is the land of
dreams, and that you can go there and live a successful life, make money and be famous but that's
not always true. According to an article written by Patrick Kim of tutorming.com; there's a huge list
of shows that are popular in China that are originally from the United States. The most popular show
on the list is a show called The Big Bang Theory. In the show, there are four geeks who all have
their PHDs and all do wacky things. Since this is a popular show in China, a good percentage of the
population most likely watches the show. The show could easily give off the impression to Chinese
citizens looking to immigrate to America that

How Much Control And Pressure Should Parents Exert Over...
The second real life scenario that we'll be investigating in relation to the knowledge question, "How
much control and pressure should parents exert over children?" is the lives of child prodigies.
A child prodigy is defined as: "a person who, at an early age, develops one or more skills at a level
far beyond the norm for their age."
Although nature does play a factor in their ability, child prodigies are also often strongly pushed and
controlled by their parents. Their abilities can thus, to a certain extent, be seen as a result of their
parents' raising methods.
I'll be introducing two such child prodigies.
The first of these is William James Sidis. Sidis was born on April 1st, 1898, to a family of brilliant,
but neurotic parents. His father, Boris Sidis, was a professor of psychology at Harvard, and saw his
son's birth as an opportunity to perform experiments on the human psyche on a live specimen.
Specifically, Boris put intense academic pressure on William.
At five, William was learning Latin, Greek, Russian, French, German, and Hebrew. At the same
time, the media constantly hounded him and monitored his progress: Sidis lived a life of constant
scrutiny.
By nine, his father had forced him to enrol in Harvard; by twelve, he was a lecturer.
But by his sixteenth birthday, Sidis retired from Harvard after a heavily publicised mental
breakdown and began to lead a life of total seclusion, abstaining from even academia. Sidis took on
odd jobs, such as working at a printing

Two Kinds
Two Kinds is a wonderful little short story about a immigrant Chinese woman in the mid 1950's to
early 1960's that moved to Chinatown in California to give herself a better opportunity to make it in
America. In the story we see the Amy's mother as a woman who already has dealt with her fair share
of pain and disappointment. Jeng–mei mothers entire family seemed to have been wiped out before
she came to America from China Jeng–mei explains " she had come to San Francisco in 1949 after
losing everything in China: her mother and father, her home, her first husband, and two daughter,
twin baby girls. But she never looked back with regret."

I won't let her change me". This is where struggle rears its ugly head in her and her mother's
relationship Jeng–mei not being from China lacked an obedience that her counterpart may have had
because she was an American child. You see Jeng–mei's mother did not take into consideration her
child being an American was probably not going to be as obedient as other Chinese girls were.
Jeng–mei's mother reason for coming to America was to take advantage of all America had to offer
but I don't think Amy's mother realized that America gave her daughter her own mind. In conclusion
we see through the rest of the story that there was more conflict with the two. Jeng–mei's mother
buys a piano for her daughter to learn how to play and become a prodigy at the piano. Mrs. Tan
traded cleaning house with Mr. Chong their deaf neighbor who used to teach music. Amy starts to
slack because her music teacher was deaf and not able to truly hear what Amy was playing. This was
reflected in the recital and utterly bombed in front her parent, family, and friends. Amy's mother was
disappointed but when Jeng–mei felt that this would be her escape and her mother would not bother
her about this prodigy thing she was sadly mistaken Jeng–mei's mother did not waver from this way
of thinking. Jeng–mei then has a fit and becomes like a typical American child and becomes very
disrespectful toward her mother and Amy's mother and her

Whether it is wholesome or tough love, the bond of a mother and daughter can never be broken.
"The Joy Luck Club" is the epitome of this notion. The anthology contains a series of sixteen
vignettes, four of which belonging to one of each of the four members of The Joy Luck Club. These
vignettes cover the perspectives of mothers who immigrated to America from China, along with the
flip side point of view, taken over by each of their daughters. In the anthology, Tan reflects on her
past life and incorporates it into the book, exploring cultural, relationship, and internal conflicts.
The first chapter of "The Joy Luck Club" is named after one mother, Suyuan Woo. The reader is
introduced to Jing–Mei, her daughter, struggling to replace her mother in her spot at the mahjong
table, as she died two months prior. In 1949, Suyuan Woo and her husband, Canning, left for
America in effort for a better life–– two years before the birth of Jing–Mei. There, she joined a
Chinese baptist church where she met the other core members of The (rendition of) Joy Luck Club:
the Hsus, the Jongs, and the St. Clairs. Suyuan and Jing–Mei Woo, despite how well they get along,
run into many conflicts, mostly regarding their differences in culture. Suyuan grew up in China,
where she had gone through several complications and dire situations, which as a result forced her
to succumb to extreme sacrifices–– one of which being the abandonment of her own twins. On the
other hand, Jing–Mei was born in America,

Ronald Reagan Prodigy Essay
Ronald Reagan: Presidential Prodigy
Throughout history, many men and women have came to power in order to rule and govern a nation
of people. Many have succeeded, but there has also been many failures. In the case of the United
States, we have a man or women in power based upon the view of the people. The job of President
of the United States is no easy task and few men have been able to successfully stand up to the
challenge. Ronald Reagan is one of the greatest president of all time because he implemented
personal life characteristics, intense military tactics and geopolitical successes, and instilled a broad
feeling of nationalism which set him apart from others before him.
When it comes to the job of the President, character is everything. Character is doing what is right

The Vietnam War had just ended, there had been many social problems left by presidents before, and
the economy was not doing very well. Ronald Reagan came to office with the daunting task of
fixing these issues while also bringing back a broad feeling of nationalism. Ending the Cold War
was a huge step in the right direction for the United States. Now that the tension between the two
countries was over, this allowed American to restart. This idea of nationalism went back to Reagan
original campaign promise which aimed to reinvigorate the american people and reduce their
reliance on the Government. Working with congress, Reagan was able to stimulate economic
growth, increase employment, and strengthen national defense. This later became known as the
"Reagan Revolution" and helped Reagan to win a second term. Tax cuts in 1986 exempted millions
of low income families and eliminated many deductions. At the end of the Reagan presidency,

Two Kinds by Amy Tan Essay
"Two Kinds" By Amy Tan is a heartbreaking story, it's a powerful example of conflicting
personalities and needs that cause a struggle between parent and child. In every family, parents have,
at one point, imposed their failures and expectations on their children and in worse cases have even
tried to live through their children. At times, it can be in the best interest of the child to have a parent
motivate them in a specific direction, but as in this story it can sometimes backfire, and the child can
be left with feelings of disapproval and questions of self–worth. Instead of enforcing these standards
parents should let their children be individuals, and have them learn through their own conscious
decisions, and only interfere when the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Jing Mei is a complicated character who is battling with many conflicts throughout the story on
what she really wants to so. She can't decide whether to please her mother or herself... The mother
seems to be a bit controlling. But after researching on the Asian society, i have discovered that is the
norm.
The climax of the story is a piano recital and the events that unfold the day after. Her mother is so
proud of Amy's musical talent; she even invites Auntie Lindo and Waverly to Amy's first piano
recital. Although Amy slacked on her practicing during the rising action of the story, she actually
feels confident about doing well at the recital. She is overconfident, in fact, and her performance
was a disaster. She disappoints her mother, and makes a fool of her mother or herself? It is also clear
that she has disappointed herself, and she regrets not taking lessons more seriously. The next day,
Amy's stubborn mother expects her to practice piano, as if nothing has gone wrong. This is when
Amy puts her foot down and refuses. To get her mother to back off, she tells her mother that she
wished she were dead. We discover Amy's mother has had other babies that have died. This part
explains a lot about why her mother is so hard on Amy. After Amy hurts her mother, her mother
finally gives up on Amy being a prodigy.
It was an issue of power one the mother's side and compliance on the daughter's part.

Analysis Of Two Kinds By Amy Tan
"Two Kinds" by Amy Tan is a story that focuses on a theme of generational tension between mother
and daughter. Problems of identity and community in twentieth century America are also highlighted
in this text. Jing–mei Woo struggles to find her identity as someone who has ethnic ties to China, but
is born and raised in America. Through this struggle, her idea of the type of person that she should
become changes drastically. What this text shows us is how significant events can affect our
relationships with those who are close to us and our perception of our own identity. For Jing–mei
Woo, the attempts of becoming a prodigy and failing at it changes her outlook on life, up until the
death of her mother which makes her realize something ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It also shows the readers how the moments that we encounter can end up making an impact in the
lives of those around us. A commonplace event that almost everyone experiences at one point is the
prospect of failure. In media such as books, movies and video games, the protagonist often succeeds
after suffering a setback and becoming a improved person because of it; however, the story "Two
Kinds" shows the opposite of that. It shows the failure of someone and the fallout that occurs
afterwards, causing the person that failed to never fully recover from that experience. One could
describe it as more realistic because of the fact that not everything has a happy ending. Jing–mei
performs at a talent showcase in order to fulfill her mother's ambition to have a child prodigy. Due
to the neglect and lack of practice, she fails miserably in front of a sizable crowd. This failure that is
present in front of many faces causes the perception of Jing–mei to be much more unfavorable. The
emotions she feels ranges from anger to embarrassment to frustration. "...with my whole face
quivering as I tried not to cry... But my mother's expression was what devastated me:" As we can
clearly see, failure is an experience that can be traumatizing and can affect the ability to perform
under pressure. The failure of others also affects us by showing some of our colors of our
personality. For example, the chess prodigy Waverly Jong

Essay on Rebellion in Two Kinds by Amy Tan
Two Kinds In this story "Two kinds" by Amy Tan it shows the great expectations of a mother, who
wishes for her child to be famous and a genius. The mother coming from a society that is very hard
working and obedient trying to instill the upbringing she had I her life. The child Jing–mei is a
typical example of a child rebelling against their mothers wishes no matter how hard the parental
figure tries, the child wishes to perform things in their own way and use their own freewill and to do
things in there own timely fashion. The mother moves to America after much heartache in China.

Also in making her daughter do things she may not want to do because this will lead to the daughter
to being great and having a much more successful life than their own. Jing–mei reacts extremely
negatively to this pressure. As any child would when they are forced to do things they do not want
to. It is only strengthened when she states "I won't let her change me, I promised myself. I won' be
what I am not." (pg 1220). Jing–mei feels uncomfortable with her mother putting so much pressure
on her. She is on a continuous struggle with herself to find who she really is. She is forced to take a
stance against her mother and she uses hurtful memories from her mother past by stating '"Then I
wish I'd never been born!" I shouted "I wish I were dead! Like them." (pg 1225). This refers to the
death of her twin baby daughters that died back in China. Jing–mei feels she must become her true
self, a person whom she feels her mother is not determine for her. She is constantly distraught over
the torn feelings of wanting to become her true self and making her mother proud. Still as time goes
on it proves to be better to go against her parental advice and her mothers wishes as stated "And
after seeing my mother's disappointed face once again, something inside of me began to die. I hated
the tests, they raised hopes And failed expectations." (pg 1219–1220). This only exemplifies her

Analysis Of Outliers By Malcolm Gladwell
Edgar Joshua Aguiar
Mary Foster
AP English Language and Composition

The 10,000 Hour Rule Exposed
In Malcolm Gladwell's book Outliers, he says the pillars of success are hard work, location, and
opportunity. Gladwell defines hard work as his 10,000 hour rule. I think his 10,000 hour rule has
flaws. I found others that also argue about the 10,000 hour rule. Although Malcolm Gladwell's
formula offers many examples of successful people who put in 10,000 hours of hard work, he
eliminates child prodigies or other people who are successful and quick to learn in under 10,000
hours.
In the second chapter of Outliers entitled "The 10,000 Hour Rule," Gladwell emphasizes this
particular amount of time when determining the difference between professionals and amateurs. The
way that Gladwell presents this information is that he provides his readers with stories of The
Beatles, Bill Gates, and Bill Joy in their journeys toward wealth and fame. When describing The
Beatles' early days Gladwell mentions their amount of performances in Hamburg. "The Beatles
ended up traveling to Hamburg five times between 1960 and the end of 1962. On the first trip, they
played 106 nights, five or more hours a night... All told, they performed for 270 nights in just over a
year and a half." (Gladwell, Outliers, pages 49–50) It makes sense that extended hours of practice
leads to higher efficiency in any area of skill, but Gladwell's main argument is that the opportunity
to perform such long shows for several nights during the week is what provided The Beatles the
possibility of becoming a talented band and thus very successful in their musical career.
In Business Insider, Drake Baer argues that the 10,000 hours is useless and believes that it has no
impact on the audiences' approval of a rock band. Baer writes about Frans Johansson's study:
In it, Johansson argues that deliberate practice is only a predictor of success in fields that have super
stable structures. For example, in tennis, chess, and classical music, the rules never change so you
can study up to become the best. But in less stable fields, like entrepreneurship and rock and roll,
rules can go out the window: ...there's a band like the Sex Pistols, who took

depression, it only made him think more and reflect on his life, which was not what he wanted at all.
He eventually quit his habits, realizing that his career and fans were much more important to him.
Though, with those fans supporting his music he was able to record nine albums before he died on

Summary Of Amy Tan 's ' The Joy Luck Club '
Dana Karson 8–4 3/7/16 English Amy Tan's The Joy Luck Club explores the role of family history
in a person's development. Tan's subtext suggests that knowing the life story of one's parents is
paramount to gaining a whole sense of one's self and growing up. More specifically, Jing Mei Woo,
one of the main characters in the novel, is still a child at 36, her growth stunted by difficult
experiences with her mother Suyuan, at a young age. In truth, Jing Mei never knew who her mother
actually was until after her death, and she suffered because of it. However, once Jing Mei learns her
mother's history, she gains an understanding of herself that allows her to move forward and release
the pain she has held onto for so many years. As a child, Jing Mei is surrounded by obscured stories
of Suyuan's past. She grows up without a clear idea of who her mother is, and does not know which
version of the ever–changing tale of her mother's life she should believe: "I never thought my
mother's Kweilin story was anything but a Chinese fairytale. The endings always changed.
Sometimes she said she used that worthless thousand–yuan note to buy a half–cup of rice. She
turned that rice into a pot of porridge" (25). Finally, Suyuan admits to a much darker past, one where
she ran away from her war–torn home and ended up losing everything. Despite receiving the most
complete story she had ever heard, Jing Mei still has unanswered questions. When she

Prodigy Marie Lu Character Analysis
Using the novel Prodigy by Marie Lu, I will be evaluating how she characterized the two main
characters. The first main character is June. June is this tough girl, soldier born and bred. She could
win a 3:1 fight with her eyes closed. June is not an ordinary girl either, she was the Republic's only
prodigy with a perfect score on her trial. This is very important to her personality because she got
away with a lot of mischief because of her score. June learned to act better than everyone else, and
because she was trained by the best soldiers she is also better at fighting than anyone else. In this
novel June is pushed to be inhumane a human war machine, but she would not do it. The man that

Marie Lu did a great job characterizing June in the sense that, even though June was raised to be
better than everyone else, she does not want to be treated specially. Her main characterizing point is
her stubbornness; she never gives up. June lives her life around what her brother Metias believed.
Metias was killed when Thomas, his best friend, stabs him. June lived for her brother and this was
catastrophic for her, this event gave her the need for revenge. One of her fondest memories of her
brother is when she was sick and he took care of her, even if t meant missing his induction
ceremony. On that night he promised that he would be with her forever and always, this made him
dying even more painful for her. Marie Lu also did a great job characterizing the other main
character Day. Day is this icon to the public, they believe in him and would follow him anywhere.
He also has a very unfortunate background. As a child he supposedly failed his trial and was taken
away to be tested on and when he finally escaped he could never go back to his family. The truth
was that Day did not fail he trial, he actually aced it; he is the other prodigy. His past is what makes

A Fraud Filled Rivalry Short Story
A Fraud–Filled Rivalry No matter how hard I tried I could amount to nothing better than average.
Glistening white snow was floating down from the sky as if they were all souls returning to the
earth. I laid in a white room surrounded by people I never knew, people I never needed to know. My
past life was dreary, I had died before my life had begun. I was in my mid–twenties when I had laid
on my deathbed. Some circumstances had led me to being reborn into my new life. Before, nothing
could excite me. Even the books I read only served as a medium to get out of my ordinary life.
Everything I did, everyone I used was just a tool in order to bring even the smallest bit of unordinary
into my life. The first thing I can recall after reawakening was a turning point in my life; it would
soon change my life into one of wonder. It was then when I met Anna who was heralded as a
prodigy. I remember that there was a saying, "people would call you a prodigy when you're 10, a
genius when you're 15, but once you become 20 you'll just be ordinary." People probably meant it to
be a lesson to kids so they never stop trying, or maybe to prevent children from becoming too full of
themselves. Since I was an ordinary child, I took that as people telling me that I could never break
past the invisible barrier that the world creates, a divider separating smart people and me. At that
point, I broke off from my friends and society because I did not want them to be plagued by me.
"What did you get on your test!" yelled Anna from across the room. The first time it happened I was
startled, but it now occurred so often it became commonplace. Anna was the brightest person I had
ever met, her eyes sparkled with light and a youthful energy. She was eight at the time, just like me.
"Why do you insist on this every time?" I replied in a tired voice; although, honestly I have been
getting used to this occurring every week. I had already unconsciously uncovered the results of my
test due to instinct. Upon seeing my mark, Anna opened her mouth wide; I was clearly able to
discern the astonishment covering her face. "How is it possible, I even got a 98!" Anna yelled after
overcoming her surprise. I was amazed, the test was chock full of

maniacal or cruel, just dark. They had no qualms with doing anything they were asked and were
very powerful, his mother even holding the title of guild ace. They taught Lind to love and respect
magic and helped him learn ones that would suit his creative nature. As he got older he realized that

Similarities Between Macbeth And Outliers
Although Shakespeare's Macbeth is a good example of how the concept of "fate" effects people,
Gladwell's Outliers proposes a more compelling argument for the idea of the amount of control one
has in their life. Malcolm Gladwell's novel, Outliers: The Story of Success, describes the amount of
control one has in their life better than Shakespeare's Macbeth. In Macbeth, Shakespeare uses the
Weird Sisters to tempt Macbeth's fate. They give Macbeth prophecies, foretelling his future as king
by saying, "thou shalt be king hereafter!" However, in Outliers, Gladwell uses how own research
and findings from various psychological studies to come up with a simple equation: "Achievement
is talent plus preparation." In Macbeth, all events are the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

He is what most people consider a musical prodigy, yet evidence suggests quite the opposite. Mozart
became so famous when he actually succeeded at a slower rate than other people, which goes to
show the effects of hard work. People who have the free will and mental capacity to work harder
towards their goals will come to succeed even quicker than a famed "child prodigy" like Mozart.
In the end, although Macbeth does a great job explaining the powers fate has, not only in a person's
life, but also on their mind, it doesn't quite make as strong a case for control as Outliers does.
Malcolm Gladwell's novel better shows how free will has more influence over one's life than fate
because the ultimate catch of it all is having the will to push through anything. He uses a simple
equation: success comes from talent and preparation, and describes ten thousand hours as an
appropriate amount of preparation. He uses the example of actual studies conducted to find the
answer to how much fate really influences our lives; the results he found was that free will, or
preparation, was more influential than fate, or talent. With Macbeth, there's not only the element of
some unnatural, fantastical fate, but rather the effect knowing one's fate has on the mind. Yes, the
idea of power may be too

Shirley Temple's The Decline Of A Prodigy
The Decline of a Prodigy
Evident in this culture, immense amounts of pressure often cause dissatisfaction in one's self, many
times leading one to the misconception of attaining perfection. After losing everything in China,
Jing–mei's mother, inspired by Shirley Temple, gives her daughter peculiar tests as part of
"becoming a prodigy." Being fed up with the tests, displays of her boredom allow Jing–mei's mother
to give up for a while. One day, her mother sees a little Chinese girl playing piano on television, and
this hatches the brilliant idea of having "Old Chong," a deaf, old man, teach Jing–mei piano. Jing–
mei was soon entered into the talent show, but she was clearly unprepared, and it turned out to be a

that her mother's crazy antics were to help her find what she was good at. Which leads to the

Yet she didn't see the idea of being able to become anything, and that's because she was raised in
America. From her being raised in America the perception of being anything you wanted to be
wasn't huge in her mind due her not experiencing a form of tragedy or struggle to allow her to see
that with time and effort anything is possible.
A second indication was her battle with herself and the idea of being anything. To achieve success at
the highest level for which she is capable gave her the feeling of striving for perfection. "Sometimes
the prodigy in me became impatient." "If you don't hurry up and get me out of here, I'm
disappearing for good," it warned. "And then you'll always be nothing" (130). The narrator's thought
of being nothing based on how her mother was raising her projected the idea of being a
disappointment, due to her mother pushing for a prodigy to emerge from within her and becoming a
person worth wanting to be. The idea of no achievement made it harder for her as she grew up, due
to the extensive test her mother would give her during dinner. "One night I had to look at the Bible
for three minutes and then report everything I could remember. "Now Jehoshaphat had riches and
honor in abundance and...that's all I remember, Ma." I said. "And after seeing, once again, my
mother's disappointed face, something inside me began to die" (130). Having the thought of failing
in the eyes of her mother made it harder for her to look at herself.

Analysis Of Two Kinds By Amy Tan
A parent and child's relationship evolves as they both develop a greater mindset. In the short story
"Two Kinds" by Amy Tan, the author's use of language reveals the conflict the narrator falls into
with her mother because of the high expectations that were set for her since she was a child. The
narrator comes to a realization that her mother is trying to make her someone she's not; as a result,
change occurs in the narrator, her mother, and their relationship. As a child, the narrator of the short
story was pressured to be a prodigy by her mother. The story takes place at the dinner table in the
home of the narrator. Her mother would create tests for her from stories about children who are
highly intelligent and present them during dinner every day. The narrator would often disappoint her
mother because of the low scores she'd receive on tests. The disappointment on her mother's face
would upset her every time since she wasn't living up to her mother's expectations. The narrator
lacked in confidence because she couldn't prove to her mother that she is intelligent and has talent.
According to the short story, the narrator states in lines 25–33 "Before going to bed that night I
looked in the mirror above the bathroom sink, and I saw only my face staring back – and understood
that it would always be this ordinary face – I began to cry. Such a sad, ugly girl! I made high –
pitched noises like a crazed animal, trying to scratch out the face in the mirror. And then I

Literary Techniques In Prodigy

  • 1. Literary Techniques In Prodigy Prodigy is an example of science fiction novel. It can be considered sci–fi because, for one reason, the advancements made in technology. In the time of the novel, they finally have jets that can take off vertical instead of using a runway. As of now, all planes and jets use a runway to get in and out of the air so they don't crash land. Another reason the novel is science fiction is because the signs of contemporary life and signs of the futuristic life. Some signs of contemporary life is there are classes – the elite families and the slum families. It is common that children belonging to poorer families are homeless and hungry. Another contemporary sign is that disease is common within the country; however, this disease – known as the Plague ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, though she uses many different types of literary approach to spice up her writing, she uses a lot of flashbacks – especially with the character June – and figurative language throughout most of the story. Some of the flashbacks include June thinking about memories with her brother before his murder just a few weeks prior. Day also has a few flashbacks here and there about his family before his dad disappeared, his mother being murdered by the government, his older brother – John – taking his own life to save Day, and his younger brother – Eden – was taken by the government to be used as a weapon. He also thought about his times when he was on the street: meaning, he thought about when he first met Tess – his best friend – and their life together on the street before he had met June. All in all, Lu used many flashbacks to explain the feelings and emotions the characters were experiencing. Marie Lu also used many examples of figurative language. For example, Lu writes, "The entrance yawns at us with its gaping mouth." Here she is personifying the tunnel the trains usually go through to get in and out of Denver – one of the warfront cities of the Republic. Another example of figurative language in the novel is, "My flood of words hangs in the silence between us. I can't describe the emotion on his face – something lost, something ripped from his gaze and strewn across the floor. A deep, quiet sadness that tears me ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Analysis Of Two Kinds By Amy Tan The most charming and testing relationship on the planet is the relationship between the mother and the daughter. There are such a variety of elements required in this relationship. There is a unique and unmistakable connection amongst mothers and daughters. The short story "Two Kinds" by Amy Tan outlines the principle character Jing–mei's childhood and the impacts of her mother's high expectation for her life. The mother pressures Jing–mei to exceed in America where everything is possible. However, they come into a conflict when her mother becomes determined to make Jing– mei into a child prodigy. The mother forces her daughter to take piano lessons; however, when it comes time for the talent show, she fails unhappily. Her contention with her mother goes unsettled for quite a long time. Thus, Amy Tan illustrates the difficult connection between an immigrant Chinese mother and her American–born girl, Jing–Mei. Therefore, the author represents the protagonist's evolving relationship with her mother, through symbolism and characterization. To begin with, the author emphasizes on the special bond between the mother and the daughter, using symbolism. For example, Amy Tan uses the piano lessons to symbolize the struggle between the protagonist and the protagonist's mother. After watching a show on television called "Ed Sullivan Show", the mother "traded house cleaning services for weekly lessons and a piano for [her daughter]" (Tan 3). This shows how the mother sacrifices her time ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Summary Of Amy Tan's The Joy Luck Club America for immigrants is a land where everybody can become somebody. In Two Kinds, from an excerpt the novel, The Joy Luck Club, by Amy Tan, Jing–mei's mother believed that her daughter could become anyone that she wanted. Jing–mei only wanted to become herself. Jing–mei's mother forced Jing–mei to become a prodigy. At first Jing–mei was excited to become a prodigy, however, as time went on Jing–mei started to hate trying to become a prodigy. It never stopped her mother from trying to make Jing–mei into a prodigy.Jing–mei's perspective of her own cultural identity, her role as daughter, and how she sees American life was different from her mother because they were born into two different cultures. Jing–mei, American born, and her mother, Chinese born, came from two different cultural perspective which causes them to have different views on cultural identity. Sujuan came to America hoping her child will become a prodigy. When Jing–mei and Sujuan were watching TV Sujuan saw Shirley Temple, and "at first mother thought I could be a Chinese Shirley Temple"(Tan 22). Shirley Temple was an American child prodigy. This indicates that Sujuan saw her daughter as a Chinese girl even though Jing–mei was born in America. This is significant because this was how her mother viewed Jing–mei's cultural identity. Sujuan's vision of her daughter being a Chinese Shirley Temple never happened because Jing–mei did not want to be anybody expect herself. As time continued Sujuan kept on trying to ... In John Green's novel, An Abundance of Katherines, Colin Singleton struggles with his existence and the meaning of his life, as many other teenagers do. Colin, although, is not like most teenagers. Colin is the smartest child in his town, he attended the gifted school that his mother taught at, and he had been dumped by nineteen girls, all who were named Katherine, with a K. When Katherine XIX broke up with Colin, it ruined his life, and left Colin, a self–centered know–it–all, wondering what to do with his life. The love life of Colin Singleton, and the road trip he embarks on in An Abundance of Katherines, demonstrates his character development from an underdeveloped child prodigy to a lively teenager. In An Abundance of Katherines, John Green effectively portrayed a successful character arc, beginning with Colin as a self–centered and egotistical teenager, following to a stage of depression where the protagonist was searching for his life's purpose, and ending at the peak of his arc. He is content with who he is, satisfied with his life, and okay with not being able to predict every aspect of his life. Who knows what the future has in store for Colin? Stratton Oakmont sued both the Prodigy and the unidentified poster for the defamation and argued that Prodigy is liable under the common law definition under defamation. Court Ruling: Stratton argued that liabilities are to be imposed on Prodigy as it exerted editorial control over messages by 1. Posting content information instructions for its users. 2. Enforce the guidelines with the Board Leaders. 3. Using screening software to remove offensive language. Senator Exon provided a defense against such civil or criminal liability, to encourage ISP to monitor the services. Later, this case conflicted with the court decision in the Cubby, Inc. V. As the mother comes to America she is experiencing a new life with bigger and better things. Her intentions for making June a prodigy were to gain bragging rights respect among small Chinatown, just like her friend, Auntie Lindo, whose daughter was "Chinatown's Littlest Chinese Chess Champion. " The mother just wanted June to have a bright and better future for her and to become a prodigy as she always visualized she'll be. • 13. Summary Of Marie Lu's Prodigy The way a person acts or thinks everyday may be influenced in many ways, such as the setting.Settings could be a big impact to a character just as much as a small impact. For example, in Marie Lu's Prodigy demonstrated the powerful effect the setting could make on a character, especially in the most important setting in the book, the Republic. In the beginning of Prodigy, the main characters, June and Day, are in a military city, las vegas. They felt scared, cautious and very aware. But why would normal people feel scared in las Vegas? Well, setting may have a role in this. June and Day are the most wanted criminals of the country, so they have to be careful not to draw attention to themselves. So, they felt intimidated by the offers patrolling the streets and the risk of getting caught. The text states, " Troops make their way up and down the street... This is a military city, a world of soldiers...Day shakes his head slowly. He looks unsettlingly pale"(8). This illustrated that the setting, las vegas, affected the characters. Las Vegas made Day feel uncomfortable. This setting also made June think about the past few weeks of her life. The author writes, "Vegas is the worst possible city for us to wander into by ourselves... I'm a criminal now, I'll never be able to go back to the comforts of my old life. The thought leaves a sick, empty feeling in my stomach, as if I miss being the Republic's darling. Maybe i do"(7).To reexamine, Vegas influenced June to reassess the last few ... • 17. Essay on Conformity and Rebellion "Lead or Follow" Should I conform? Should I rebel? This has and always will be, a constant battle struggled individually, or as a society. A certain amount of conformity needs to exist in life in order to avoid disorder. This is the reason we have laws. Take those laws, rules, control, or even expectations, to an extreme, and some form of rebellion is probable. Struggle with these opposites, and you have a catalyst for war, or perhaps, being fired from a job. Literature represents life, and this theme can be found at the root of many literary works. "The Lottery," by Shirley Jackson, reflects blind conformity by the villagers with a hint of rebellion. Every June 27th the lottery takes place; the prize for winning is death. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Jing–Mei feels differently though, "Unlike my mother, I did not believe I could be anything I wanted to. I could only be me," (359/80) and she was correct for she had no natural musical talent. Jing–Mei has a desire to please her mother, but an even stronger one to choose her own life. She pacifies her mother by going to piano lessons but puts in no effort. Jing–Mei is "...determined to put a stop to her blind foolishness," (356/48) but her mother's desire to create a prodigy to compete with Aunt Lindo's daughter, keeps her focused on the impossible. That is, until Jing–Mei escalates this conflict to its breaking point in rebellion. Stunning her mother, she shouts "Then I wish I'd never been born! I wish I were dead! Like them," (359/77) referring to the twin daughters her mother lost in China. Sadly, the mother's desire to have Jing–Mei conform to her expectations creates a constant battle between mother and daughter, and, in rejecting those expectations, seeing disappointment in her mother's face all too often causes Jing–Mei to feel, "something inside me began to die" (353/18). In Hanan Mikha'il 'Ashrawi's poem, "Night Patrol" we get a more subtle view of conformity and rebellion. It is of a soldier's inner battle to adhere to his duties, against his desire to be elsewhere. The soldier finds himself in the "depths of confrontation I/ never dared to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 19. Amy Tan's Two Kinds For many of us growing up, it has been our mothers that played a crucial part in our lives in terms of what made us into who we are today. Our mothers forgave us when it seemed like no one else could. They comforted us when it felt like everything was going down hill. And they have loved us unconditionally, especially during the times we needed it the most. However, there are times when our mother's do things even if we don't agree with it. Take Jing–Mei and her mother from the story "Two Kinds" by Amy Tan, for example. Jing–Mei is a girl raised by her overbearing mother, a Chinese immigrant while struggling "to forge her own sense of identity in the face of her strong– willed mother's dream that she become a prodigy" (Brent). Every idea about the essence of Jing–Mei's future to become this "prodigy" is caused by what her mother watches on television and what she reads about in women's magazines and other publications such as Ripley's Believe–it–or–not and Good Housekeeping. Her mother's first attempt to transform Jing–Mei into this "prodigy" comes from television movies. She explains, "My mother thought I could be a Chinese Shirley Temple. We'd watch Shirley's old movies on TV as though they were training films" (Roberts). While Jim–Mei continues to struggle to find who she really is, her mother on the other hand becomes determined to turn her into this prodigy. We begin to see that Jing–Mei mother demands her to try on multiple identities, such as being this Shirley Temple, but the Chinese version of course, a genius child, or even an expert at playing the piano. • 23. Essay about Richard Russo's "Dog" and Amy Tan's "Two Kinds" Richard Russo's "Dog" and Amy Tan's "Two Kinds" are stories that illustrate the negative impacts parents sometimes have on their children and the unintended consequences that occur as a result of their parenting. In "Dog," Henry Devereaux grows into an adult who has difficulty connecting emotionally with others, a man who is not easy, and though entertaining, is not comforting. In "Two Kinds," Jing–mei was a failure many times over in her mother's eyes, finally dropping out of college and only accepting of herself later in life. Eventually she relented and told Henry that, with conditions, he could earn a dog. But the conditions imposed were numerous and severe, and in reality, Henry would be incapable of fulfilling them, therefore not getting the dog would be his own fault. Henry is set up for failure by his mother, and he states: "the fact that she thought such a plan might work illustrates that some people should never be parents and that she was one of them." Henry was a normal boy and did all of the normal things young boys do: making noise, being busy and active, nosing around in the refrigerator, and asking questions – all part and parcel of being a normal child. But he was brought up to believe he wasn't a "model boy." His parents were constantly interrupted by him – his mother while she was reading and grading papers, and his father so much so that he spent most of his time in his office on campus, joining them only at mealtimes. His father wished to remain "blissfully unaware." Henry's father finally brought home a dog, but it was on his terms. The dog was an old, arthritic, barely ambulatory Irish setter, who was "wonderfully mannered and meticulously groomed," and "the kind of dog you'd get if you really didn't want a dog or to be bothered with a dog." Henry knew as soon as he saw the old dog that "he had been betrayed and outsmarted." Henry's final helping of guilt was assigned when he ran out of the house in anger ... • 27. "Two Kinds" Point of View The short story, "Two Kinds", written by Amy Tan, is written from the point of view of the character named Jing–Mei. There are three experiences which demonstrate her viewpoint. In the first experience, Jing–Mei is being told by her mom about the "American dream". At first, she strives to pursue this prodigy. Her mom would test her every night after dinner. Through Jing–Mei's eyes, she starts to realize that it was not the life she wanted to live. Lines in the story illustrate this when he says "I won't let her change me, I promised myself. I won't be what I'm not." (p.406). In the second experience, Jing–Mei performs in a talent show. • 29. Check-Mate In Simic's Prodigy' A couple of lines throughout "Prodigy" jumped out and set a tone for the poem. The first line "I loved the word endgame," is close to the top and at that point in the poem the reader is only thinking chess, but in chess one does not say "endgame" they say "check–mate". Simic chose the word endgame to foreshadow to what he soon began to allude to, and that is World War II. The other line is "The white King was missing," which is using the direct term of a chess piece, the white king, but what else is Simic trying to get through? Simic states "The white King was missing," rather than saying "The white king piece was missing" opening the mind to the semantic difficulty. • 31. The Conflicts Of Conflict In Two Kinds By Amy Tan "Two Kinds" by Amy Tan is a story that shows a battle between the narrator and her mother, for control over the narrator's life. Her mother wanted her to become a prodigy, but she wanted to be anything other than her mother's idea of a successful American. So, throughout the short story "Two Kinds" she's determined to not quit the fight to no longer have her mother push for her success. Her determination leads to her rebelling against her mother's ideas, and finally puts a stop to the idea of a prodigy. "Two Kinds" demonstrates different forms of conflict which allowed for the narrator to realize that her mother's crazy antics were to help her find what she was good at. The narrator conquers the twoness in her life after eighteen years by using the conflicts of her past, and they lead to her growth in maturity and her development as a writer, which allows for her to reconfigure the battles with her mother. Twoness is "the fact or condition of being two or doubleness" (Oxford Dictionary). Twoness is also known as duality which is "the condition or fact of being dual or consisting of two parts or natures" (Oxford Dictionary). Conflict is "a competitive or opposing action of incompatible, or antagonistic state or action (as of divergent ideas, interest, or persons). It's a mental struggle that resulted from incompatible or opposing needs, drives, wishes, or external or internal demands; along with the opposition of person or forces that gives rise to the dramatic in drama or fiction" (Oxford Dictionary). One indication of conflict is the cultural difference between the narrator and her mother. Her mother was born and lived her life in China, while the first–person narrator was born and raised in America. America is known as the land of opportunity and the land of dreams, which gave her mother the idea that the first–person narrator could be a prodigy. In other words, from the mother's point of view, the narrator could be whatever she put her mind to. Her mother came to San Francisco, a place that gave the opportunity for all to make a life for themselves. Her mother believed "you could be anything you wanted to be in America. • 33. Analysis Of Two Kinds By Amy Tan In the short story Two Kinds by Amy Tan, she writes about a child named Jing–mei and her experiences with her mother pushing her to become a prodigy, all while her mother deals with being a Chinese immigrant that just moved to the United States. The two countries obviously share very different cultures and this plays a part in the story as she pushes Jing–mei to live 'The American Dream'. Her mother strongly believes that in America you can be whatever you want to be. This, to some, may not be true, however this idea is strongly pushed in the Chinese culture. This is shown when Jing–mei fails to do any prodigious task that her mother puts in front of her which leads to her mother being ultimately disappointed in Jing–mei. Her failures ends up causing a huge argument between Jing–mei and her mother. The argument could be called the climax of the story. This confrontation wouldn't have happened if Jing–mei's mother didn't have the huge idea that The American Dream is a legitimate thing, and Jing–mei's mother wouldn't have that perception of America if the Chinese culture didn't present the United States as such a place. Based on Chinese culture and perspectives, there are numerous fallacies concerning the American Dream, and these are displayed in Amy Tan's short story "Two Kinds". Chinese culture is obviously extremely different than the culture in the United States, and not many Chinese citizens actually know what it's like to live in America. This could lead to the United States being represented incorrectly. Most Chinese citizens have the impression that America is the land of dreams, and that you can go there and live a successful life, make money and be famous but that's not always true. According to an article written by Patrick Kim of tutorming.com; there's a huge list of shows that are popular in China that are originally from the United States. The most popular show on the list is a show called The Big Bang Theory. In the show, there are four geeks who all have their PHDs and all do wacky things. Since this is a popular show in China, a good percentage of the population most likely watches the show. The show could easily give off the impression to Chinese citizens looking to immigrate to America that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The second real life scenario that we'll be investigating in relation to the knowledge question, "How much control and pressure should parents exert over children?" is the lives of child prodigies. A child prodigy is defined as: "a person who, at an early age, develops one or more skills at a level far beyond the norm for their age." Although nature does play a factor in their ability, child prodigies are also often strongly pushed and controlled by their parents. Their abilities can thus, to a certain extent, be seen as a result of their parents' raising methods. I'll be introducing two such child prodigies. The first of these is William James Sidis. Sidis was born on April 1st, 1898, to a family of brilliant, but neurotic parents. His father, Boris Sidis, was a professor of psychology at Harvard, and saw his son's birth as an opportunity to perform experiments on the human psyche on a live specimen. Specifically, Boris put intense academic pressure on William. At five, William was learning Latin, Greek, Russian, French, German, and Hebrew. At the same time, the media constantly hounded him and monitored his progress: Sidis lived a life of constant scrutiny. By nine, his father had forced him to enrol in Harvard; by twelve, he was a lecturer. But by his sixteenth birthday, Sidis retired from Harvard after a heavily publicised mental breakdown and began to lead a life of total seclusion, abstaining from even academia. Jeng–mei's mother reason for coming to America was to take advantage of all America had to offer but I don't think Amy's mother realized that America gave her daughter her own mind. • 43. Analysis Of The Joy Luck Club Whether it is wholesome or tough love, the bond of a mother and daughter can never be broken. "The Joy Luck Club" is the epitome of this notion. The anthology contains a series of sixteen vignettes, four of which belonging to one of each of the four members of The Joy Luck Club. These vignettes cover the perspectives of mothers who immigrated to America from China, along with the flip side point of view, taken over by each of their daughters. In the anthology, Tan reflects on her past life and incorporates it into the book, exploring cultural, relationship, and internal conflicts. The first chapter of "The Joy Luck Club" is named after one mother, Suyuan Woo. The reader is introduced to Jing–Mei, her daughter, struggling to replace her mother in her spot at the mahjong table, as she died two months prior. In 1949, Suyuan Woo and her husband, Canning, left for America in effort for a better life–– two years before the birth of Jing–Mei. There, she joined a Chinese baptist church where she met the other core members of The (rendition of) Joy Luck Club: the Hsus, the Jongs, and the St. Clairs. Suyuan and Jing–Mei Woo, despite how well they get along, run into many conflicts, mostly regarding their differences in culture. A commonplace event that almost everyone experiences at one point is the prospect of failure. In media such as books, movies and video games, the protagonist often succeeds after suffering a setback and becoming a improved person because of it; however, the story "Two Kinds" shows the opposite of that. It shows the failure of someone and the fallout that occurs afterwards, causing the person that failed to never fully recover from that experience. One could describe it as more realistic because of the fact that not everything has a happy ending. Jing–mei performs at a talent showcase in order to fulfill her mother's ambition to have a child prodigy. Due to the neglect and lack of practice, she fails miserably in front of a sizable crowd. This failure that is present in front of many faces causes the perception of Jing–mei to be much more unfavorable. The emotions she feels ranges from anger to embarrassment to frustration. • 56. Analysis Of Outliers By Malcolm Gladwell Edgar Joshua Aguiar Mary Foster AP English Language and Composition 16 August 2017 The 10,000 Hour Rule Exposed In Malcolm Gladwell's book Outliers, he says the pillars of success are hard work, location, and opportunity. Gladwell defines hard work as his 10,000 hour rule. I think his 10,000 hour rule has flaws. I found others that also argue about the 10,000 hour rule. Although Malcolm Gladwell's formula offers many examples of successful people who put in 10,000 hours of hard work, he eliminates child prodigies or other people who are successful and quick to learn in under 10,000 hours. In the second chapter of Outliers entitled "The 10,000 Hour Rule," Gladwell emphasizes this particular amount of time when determining the difference between professionals and amateurs. The way that Gladwell presents this information is that he provides his readers with stories of The Beatles, Bill Gates, and Bill Joy in their journeys toward wealth and fame. When describing The Beatles' early days Gladwell mentions their amount of performances in Hamburg. "The Beatles ended up traveling to Hamburg five times between 1960 and the end of 1962. On the first trip, they played 106 nights, five or more hours a night... All told, they performed for 270 nights in just over a year and a half." (Gladwell, Outliers, pages 49–50) It makes sense that extended hours of practice leads to higher efficiency in any area of skill, but Gladwell's main argument is that the opportunity to perform such long shows for several nights during the week is what provided The Beatles the possibility of becoming a talented band and thus very successful in their musical career. In Business Insider, Drake Baer argues that the 10,000 hours is useless and believes that it has no impact on the audiences' approval of a rock band. Baer writes about Frans Johansson's study: In it, Johansson argues that deliberate practice is only a predictor of success in fields that have super stable structures. For example, in tennis, chess, and classical music, the rules never change so you can study up to become the best. But in less stable fields, like entrepreneurship and rock and roll, rules can go out the window: ...there's a band like the Sex Pistols, who took ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Tan's subtext suggests that knowing the life story of one's parents is paramount to gaining a whole sense of one's self and growing up. More specifically, Jing Mei Woo, one of the main characters in the novel, is still a child at 36, her growth stunted by difficult experiences with her mother Suyuan, at a young age. In truth, Jing Mei never knew who her mother actually was until after her death, and she suffered because of it. However, once Jing Mei learns her mother's history, she gains an understanding of herself that allows her to move forward and release the pain she has held onto for so many years. As a child, Jing Mei is surrounded by obscured stories of Suyuan's past. She grows up without a clear idea of who her mother is, and does not know which version of the ever–changing tale of her mother's life she should believe: "I never thought my mother's Kweilin story was anything but a Chinese fairytale. The endings always changed. Sometimes she said she used that worthless thousand–yuan note to buy a half–cup of rice. She turned that rice into a pot of porridge" (25). Finally, Suyuan admits to a much darker past, one where she ran away from her war–torn home and ended up losing everything. Despite receiving the most complete story she had ever heard, Jing Mei still has unanswered questions. When she ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 62. Prodigy Marie Lu Character Analysis Using the novel Prodigy by Marie Lu, I will be evaluating how she characterized the two main characters. The first main character is June. June is this tough girl, soldier born and bred. She could win a 3:1 fight with her eyes closed. June is not an ordinary girl either, she was the Republic's only prodigy with a perfect score on her trial. This is very important to her personality because she got away with a lot of mischief because of her score. June learned to act better than everyone else, and because she was trained by the best soldiers she is also better at fighting than anyone else. In this novel June is pushed to be inhumane a human war machine, but she would not do it. The man that she was told to kill went to college with her, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Marie Lu did a great job characterizing June in the sense that, even though June was raised to be better than everyone else, she does not want to be treated specially. Her main characterizing point is her stubbornness; she never gives up. June lives her life around what her brother Metias believed. Metias was killed when Thomas, his best friend, stabs him. June lived for her brother and this was catastrophic for her, this event gave her the need for revenge. One of her fondest memories of her brother is when she was sick and he took care of her, even if t meant missing his induction ceremony. On that night he promised that he would be with her forever and always, this made him dying even more painful for her. Marie Lu also did a great job characterizing the other main character Day. Day is this icon to the public, they believe in him and would follow him anywhere. He also has a very unfortunate background. As a child he supposedly failed his trial and was taken away to be tested on and when he finally escaped he could never go back to his family. The truth was that Day did not fail he trial, he actually aced it; he is the other prodigy. His past is what makes Day ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 64. A Fraud Filled Rivalry Short Story A Fraud–Filled Rivalry No matter how hard I tried I could amount to nothing better than average. Glistening white snow was floating down from the sky as if they were all souls returning to the earth. I laid in a white room surrounded by people I never knew, people I never needed to know. My past life was dreary, I had died before my life had begun. I was in my mid–twenties when I had laid on my deathbed. Some circumstances had led me to being reborn into my new life. Before, nothing could excite me. Even the books I read only served as a medium to get out of my ordinary life. Everything I did, everyone I used was just a tool in order to bring even the smallest bit of unordinary into my life. The first thing I can recall after reawakening was a turning point in my life; it would soon change my life into one of wonder. It was then when I met Anna who was heralded as a prodigy. I remember that there was a saying, "people would call you a prodigy when you're 10, a genius when you're 15, but once you become 20 you'll just be ordinary." People probably meant it to be a lesson to kids so they never stop trying, or maybe to prevent children from becoming too full of themselves. Since I was an ordinary child, I took that as people telling me that I could never break past the invisible barrier that the world creates, a divider separating smart people and me. At that point, I broke off from my friends and society because I did not want them to be plagued by me. "What did you get on your test!" yelled Anna from across the room. The first time it happened I was startled, but it now occurred so often it became commonplace. Anna was the brightest person I had ever met, her eyes sparkled with light and a youthful energy. She was eight at the time, just like me. "Why do you insist on this every time?" I replied in a tired voice; although, honestly I have been getting used to this occurring every week. I had already unconsciously uncovered the results of my test due to instinct. Upon seeing my mark, Anna opened her mouth wide; I was clearly able to discern the astonishment covering her face. "How is it possible, I even got a 98!" Anna yelled after overcoming her surprise. I was amazed, the test was chock full of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 68. Lindsay: A Prodigy In The Art World Lindsay was a prodigy in the art world. Since childhood he has been able to create lifelike pictures that seem to leap off the page. He used to create gigantic murals for the guild master of the dark guild, Pheasant's Eye, that his parents and himself were apart of. He loved his parents, who weren't maniacal or cruel, just dark. They had no qualms with doing anything they were asked and were very powerful, his mother even holding the title of guild ace. They taught Lind to love and respect magic and helped him learn ones that would suit his creative nature. As he got older he realized that pure darkness wasn't creating a balance and that light was also necessary to make the world function. They grew apart and Lind tried keeping as much physical distance between himself and the entire guild. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Since there was no evidence of magic or weapon use he was never caught, but he continued using elemental bands and transforming his metal bracelet into a sharp edge. He won enough money to open up a tattoo shop and made it possible for him to summon it so he could travel. Two years later he found out Josephine had died from a magic related illness and the lose of his only friend hurt him even deeper. • 70. Similarities Between Macbeth And Outliers Although Shakespeare's Macbeth is a good example of how the concept of "fate" effects people, Gladwell's Outliers proposes a more compelling argument for the idea of the amount of control one has in their life. Malcolm Gladwell's novel, Outliers: The Story of Success, describes the amount of control one has in their life better than Shakespeare's Macbeth. In Macbeth, Shakespeare uses the Weird Sisters to tempt Macbeth's fate. They give Macbeth prophecies, foretelling his future as king by saying, "thou shalt be king hereafter!" However, in Outliers, Gladwell uses how own research and findings from various psychological studies to come up with a simple equation: "Achievement is talent plus preparation." In Macbeth, all events are the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He is what most people consider a musical prodigy, yet evidence suggests quite the opposite. Mozart became so famous when he actually succeeded at a slower rate than other people, which goes to show the effects of hard work. People who have the free will and mental capacity to work harder towards their goals will come to succeed even quicker than a famed "child prodigy" like Mozart. In the end, although Macbeth does a great job explaining the powers fate has, not only in a person's life, but also on their mind, it doesn't quite make as strong a case for control as Outliers does. Malcolm Gladwell's novel better shows how free will has more influence over one's life than fate because the ultimate catch of it all is having the will to push through anything. He uses a simple equation: success comes from talent and preparation, and describes ten thousand hours as an appropriate amount of preparation. He uses the example of actual studies conducted to find the answer to how much fate really influences our lives; the results he found was that free will, or preparation, was more influential than fate, or talent. With Macbeth, there's not only the element of some unnatural, fantastical fate, but rather the effect knowing one's fate has on the mind. Yes, the idea of power may be too ... • 72. Shirley Temple's The Decline Of A Prodigy The Decline of a Prodigy Evident in this culture, immense amounts of pressure often cause dissatisfaction in one's self, many times leading one to the misconception of attaining perfection. After losing everything in China, Jing–mei's mother, inspired by Shirley Temple, gives her daughter peculiar tests as part of "becoming a prodigy." Being fed up with the tests, displays of her boredom allow Jing–mei's mother to give up for a while. One day, her mother sees a little Chinese girl playing piano on television, and this hatches the brilliant idea of having "Old Chong," a deaf, old man, teach Jing–mei piano. Jing– mei was soon entered into the talent show, but she was clearly unprepared, and it turned out to be a complete fiasco, disappointing her mother. Two days later, she got in a verbal fight with her mother, and to upset her, Jing–mei declares, "I wish I were dead. Like them." She was referring to her twin sisters that her ... Jing–mei's mother obviously wants Jing–mei to be a "super–girl" with improbably numerous talents taken from other young children she saw on television or on magazines, which is undoubtedly hopelessly beyond the bounds of possibility. As one can see from this argument in particular, unfortunately, Jing–mei's mother does not allow Jing–mei to make her own decisions, adversely affecting her own relationship with her ... Yet she didn't see the idea of being able to become anything, and that's because she was raised in America. From her being raised in America the perception of being anything you wanted to be wasn't huge in her mind due her not experiencing a form of tragedy or struggle to allow her to see that with time and effort anything is possible. A second indication was her battle with herself and the idea of being anything. To achieve success at the highest level for which she is capable gave her the feeling of striving for perfection. "Sometimes the prodigy in me became impatient." "If you don't hurry up and get me out of here, I'm disappearing for good," it warned. "And then you'll always be nothing" (130). The narrator's thought of being nothing based on how her mother was raising her projected the idea of being a disappointment, due to her mother pushing for a prodigy to emerge from within her and becoming a person worth wanting to be. The idea of no achievement made it harder for her as she grew up, due to the extensive test her mother would give her during dinner. "One night I had to look at the Bible for three minutes and then report everything I could remember. "Now Jehoshaphat had riches and honor in abundance and...that's all I remember, Ma." I said. "And after seeing, once again, my mother's disappointed face, something inside me began to die" (130).
