This document discusses pathogens of salmonella. Salmonella is a rod-shaped, gram-negative bacteria that causes the foodborne illness salmonellosis. There are over 2,500 serotypes of salmonella bacteria, with the most common causing human illness being S. Typhimurium and S. Enteritidis. Salmonella is widely found in the intestinal tracts of animals and causes one million illnesses annually in the United States through contaminated foods. The symptoms of salmonellosis include diarrhea, fever, vomiting and abdominal cramps.
