The document describes design choices made for a music magazine mock-up, comparing them to real magazines. Key points:
1) The masthead takes up the full top to be more visible, unlike the established NME magazine.
2) Main images feature subjects not making direct eye contact to seem more attitude.
3) Teasers include established music names to entice buying and the date is abbreviated for a young audience.
4) Page numbers are highlighted in black with interesting fonts and article descriptions underneath.

Magazine layout inspiration
1.
2. Masthead: I chose to make the mast head take up
the hole of the top of the magazine so that it is
more visible. NME do not need to do this as they
are already well established
Main image: These
main images are
similar as in both the
subject is not making
direct eye contact
with the audience
and instead looking
off to the side. This is
effective as it makes
the subject look as if
they have attitude.
Teaser: I have included a teaser in my magazine
with established names in the music industry to
entice people into buying it.
3.
4. Date: I included a different title than I used on the masthead to keep the flow of the I used thumbnail images similar to the ones
contents page, but the theme is till similar. I also abbreviated the date which is fine used in this Q magazine
as the target audience is young people who would not care.
Page numbers: I
have chosen to
highlight the
titles of the
articles in black
with an
interesting font
and then
explain the
article a little
bit more
underneath.
Reviews: I included thumbnails of the album
Cut-out image: I decided to use an image of the cartoon character 2D
covers in my reviews section and I positioned the
from Gorillaz (which I drew) for my image similar to this Madonna one
text in a more interesting way as there was a fair
in NME as I thought the outcome would be a better image (the edges
amount of dead space.
aren’t all choppy)

6. Image: I have taken a simple picture. As with
the main image on the cover, the subject is
again not making eye contact with the camera,
creating interest. In my magazine the image
only takes up one page whereas in this example
the image goes onto the opposite page.
Pull-out quote: I pulled out a
quote from the article I wrote
that reinforced the ‘indie’ idea. I
increased the stroke creating an
interesting shape similar to the
ransom note effect used for Lily
Allen’s pull-out quote.
Article: The article in this magazine example only takes up a
small amount of the page and probably continues onto a
third page. In my magazine the article takes up an entire
page and is enclosed in columns of a shape similar to the
logo in the masthead on the front cover.
