Women Wear Veils In America
In America it is quite unusual to see women wearing veils. In some parts of the world it is odd to see
women with their faces exposed in public. Most women who wear veils every day are Muslim; the
veil is called a hijab. The word hijab means a screen or curtain. Muslim women wear these veils for
a few different reasons, to some it is a symbol of modesty, for others it is forced on them either by
law or by the men in their family. Middle Eastern countries such as Turkey, Iran or Afghanistan have
such laws. The women are only required to cover themselves when they are in public. In their home
they are allowed to keep their faces uncovered. Muslim girls do not have to wear a veil until they
reach puberty. In the mid–70s

The Pros And Cons Of Islam
Nowadays , citizens often hear about the troubles Islamic radicals brings to countries, especially in

Does Islam Need Reformation Or Do Islamic Societies Need...
While lacking any academic credentials, these islamophobic figures, in their scorched–earth view of
Islam, wage a campaign that reduces an entire scripture of 114 chapters and over 6,000 verses to a
few de–contextualized verses, and their criticism of Islam as grossly simplistic and desperate
attempt to malign a world religion and a human civilization comparable to others. For a religion,
unlike Christianity and Judaism, that didn 't experience Renaissance, the Reformation and the
Enlightenment, and Industrial Revolution, Islam has been comparably tolerant at the beginning as
well as today, and slowly improving its core human rights conditions.

Does Islam need Reformation or do Islamic societies need Enlightenment? Since the Sept 11, 2001,
there have been many calls from within Islamic societies or outside of it pushing for a reformation
of Islamic practices. The West 's Reformation of 16th century is the supposed <a

Global Affairs As A Multidisciplinary Field Essay
Introduction Global Affairs is a very broad discipline that involves several fields of study. In fact
depending on the source, the definition of Global Affairs can have many meanings. Since Global
Affairs covers many areas, most people within the discipline chose to focus on one area of study.
Discussion and debate are important within Global Affairs. They allow for education about issues
that are occurring in the world and provide suggestions for problems to be fixed. International
conferences and debates in scholarship are two of the ways in which people in Global Affairs
interact to make change in the world.
Global Affairs Definition Within various contexts, Global Affairs can be defined in several ways.
George Mason University describes Global Affairs as being a multidisciplinary field. At Mason,
Global Affairs covers international politics, economics, culture, and international development. It
also focuses on these issues in specific regions of the world (George Mason University). The New
York Times defines Global Affairs as issues as international politics, economics, and culture. Global
Affairs studies and analyzes international interactions, mainly through a political lens. The New
York Times does not have a specific definition for Global Affairs. However, one popular section is
the "International Relations" section. Most of the articles focus on political issues between nations
(International New York Times). George Mason and the New York Times both give

Analysis Of Ayaan Hirsi Ali Speaks Of Honor Killings And...
Ayaan Hirsi Ali speaks of honor killings and forced marriages in Middle Eastern society in the The
AHA Foundation 2nd Annual Conference. She begins with describing her personal situation when
she was younger; her arranged marriage to a relative and then her escape to the Netherlands at the
age of twenty–two in an effort to avoid this marriage where she was met with an entirely different
culture where the pressure of the honor of the family was not forced upon females by both female
and male parties within the family. She noted how Dutch women wore what they pleased, failed to
have rigid curfews, had romantic relationships as they desired, and did not have to obey their male
guardians in every aspect contrary to the adamant regulations imposed on women in the Middle
Eastern society she grew up in. She describes how the difference between regular domestic abuse
and honor violence is that honor violence is justified by the perpetrator by their culture and religion;
they claim they have no other choice because the woman in question defiled the families honor and
there was no other option available other than to kill her for the sake of honor. When a woman born
in this culture begins to defy her family, the family will either commit an honor killing, or marry the
girl off, Ali states. When honor killings are performed they are almost always made to look
accidental, and can range from shootings, stranglings, drownings or even beheadings when a point
is to be made to other

Ayaan Hirsi Ali Research Paper
How would you react to someone criticizing your religion? Would you hate them or defend them, in
the name of the First Amendment? This is a question people have been pondering after listening to
Ayaan Hirsi Ali's various interviews and speeches. Ayaan is a Somali–born woman who fled to the
Netherlands when she was around 23, to escape the marriage her father had arranged for her to her
cousin. She is known as a big criticizer of the religion of Islam, and this is largely in part because of
her own experiences (which you will learn about later in this paper). Ayaan possesses many qualities
that would make people follow a leader: she shows bravery and perseverance in continuing to speak
out about her opinions on Islam, even though many people ... Show more content on

And as soon as you really take note of it, you're going to have to ask yourself, "What have I got to
do with this?"."). She also delves into unsafe territory in saying what she says, which she
acknowledges: "People have been warning about this backlash for 30 years." (Bethune). This shows
just how persistent she is (though many people, even other Muslims here in America, have sent her
death threats because of her speeches). These are not just good traits to have for a leader, but anyone
could have these. Being brave, persevering, and persisting are all great skills to have in this world.
They will help you with many things: getting good grades, a job, a raise, etc. If students like us will
take away anything from learning about Ayaan Hirsi Ali, it should be that you should not be afraid
to speak your mind, and to not judge a book by it's cover (because Ayaan used to be a devout
Muslim but is now an outspoken atheist). Everyone disagrees about Ayaan. They say she shouldn't
be so critical of Islam, and that not everyone is bad just because of their religion. This is a great
thing to discuss, because no two people are exactly the same: One person may think that what she is
doing is fine, but someone else may say that Ayaan is being too harsh to others. Whatever you may
believe, you should know that Ayaan Hirsi Ali has changed the way people think about religion and

The Harm In Hate Speech Analysis
Jeremy Waldron argues in favor of hate speech restrictions in his book "The Harm in Hate Speech".
He presents the central argument that vulnerable minorities are in need of hate speech regulation to
protect them from harm. Another argument he presents is that such regulation must be a content–
based regulation, as opposed to a time, place, and manner restriction that is usually employed to
prevent certain kinds of speech. A final argument he uses is that speech is the harmful action, rather
than speech simply causing harmful actions. I do not find his arguments to be compelling enough
reasons to support restricting free speech with hate speech laws.
Waldron's central argument is that vulnerable minorities need and deserve government ... Show

He believes that since hate speech legislation is seen as acceptable and necessary in most developed
nations that it is therefore the principles are also applicable to the United States. He openly admits
that he does not accept any assumptions that make up free–speech jurisprudence, because they are
contrary to his views on how society needs to address hateful speech. The assumptions he rejects
include the tendency for truth to prevail in the marketplace of ideas, the effectiveness of counter
speech, and that content–based restrictions are bad.
However, these ideas cannot be simply dismissed because they are central to the American
perspective on the necessity of hate speech legislation. Waldron fails to address in an effective way
why he is able to dismiss these central ideas. In doing so, he is practically admitting to the reader
that his ideas are based outside of the framework of the reality of American free speech tradition.
The strength of his argument suffers from the fact that his argument is not applicable to the reality of
American society's views on free speech.
Waldron also argues that the harms caused by hate speech are "constituted by speech, rather than
merely caused by speech" (166). He believes that the element that damages the dignity and
assurance of vulnerable minorities is the speech itself, not actions that they speech promotes or the
way that it is

Infidel My Life Story Summary
Introduction
The book being reviewed is Infidel: My Life Story by Ayaan Hirsi Ali. Ali was born in Somalia,
though due to her father's involvement in the Somali civil war she and along with her family were
constantly moving. The majority of her upbringing was spent in Saudi Arabia, Kenya and Ethiopia.
After fleeing to the Netherlands, to avoid a forced marriage, Ali assimilated herself into the Dutch
society and achieved her M.A. in political science. Today she is established as a women's rights
activist with her own foundation called AHA. Through her foundation Ali is attempting to aid in the
prevention of violence against children and women in the US, along with promoting the status of
women and girls globally. Ali is otherwise known as an author, and former politician. She is well
known for her unpopular and controversial views on Islam. Ali argues that the foundation of Islam
contradicts Western democratic views, mainly women's rights, in her memoir. Along with writing
this autobiography, Ali has written countless of other books including Heretic: Why Islam Needs a
Reformation Now, Nomad, and The Caged Virgin.
Purpose
Ali's purpose with this book was to bring light to how the controversial aspect of the Quran, which
completely endorses both male dominance and female torment. The main ... Show more content on

Though, it is evident that she is targeting women, primarily the neglected women of Islam. That's
not saying no one else would benefit from reading this book. Infact, people who are in interested in
politics and social conditions on a global scale would enjoy reading Ali's writing.
Method
Infidel: My Life Story is solely composed of Ali's upbringing. Her childhood was mainly spent in
Somalia and Saudi Arabia, where Islam was the dominate religion and women were seen as lower
than men. After so many years of being a devoted Muslim, Ali began having doubts as she grew to
be more observant.

Effects Of Marriage On Society : A Young Man Once Lived...

English 1010
15 April 2012 The Effects of Polygamous Marriages in our Societies A young man once lived
happily with his wife and eight children. After his eighth child turned out to be a girl, he was a little
bit upset but was still in love with his family. When he decided to take in a second wife in order to
guarantee a male child, the family started having new problems. Some of the kids became
traumatized since they had not been used to problems. The husband lost his job since his family
problems were affecting his job performance. The family that has always been happy turned out
overnight to be the contrary. The husband regretted the mistake he made by taking a second wife.
Polygamy is illegal in most of the countries around the world including United States; it should also
be outlawed in the practicing countries because it can cause unfairness towards women, poverty,
jealousy, child abuse and can impact health. There exists many types of marriages like polyandry,
polygyny, monogamy, and polygamy just to name a few. Polygamy was popular in the early 14th
and 15th centuries, but now in our modern world polygamy has been outlawed in most of the
countries, especially in the developed nations. Polygamy is still practiced in some countries in the
East and in Africa. Like Cameroon, Nigeria, Afghanistan, Burkina Faso, Egypt, Pakistan, Palestine,
Yemen, South Africa, the list is long. The lists of countries that have outlawed polygamy

Personal Position : The Issue Of Abortion And Pro-Life
One day in class, the topic of abortion and pro–life arose, concerning the issue of whether a woman
should possess the right to decide to keep or obliterate her baby's life. I remember one girl candidly
asserting her beliefs that this significant right belonged to the woman concerned and she should be
able to make this choice because after all, it was her carrying the child and subsequently going to be
accountable for such a substantial responsibility. Several other adolescents joined in agreeing with
her point, some adding support, and others bringing up various examples. Listening to my
classmates' arguments, I could not help but disagree with several of their direct statements
concerning this issue, leading me to question them if the power to keep or take away life from a
powerless, defenseless human being unable to speak up for itself lies really in our hands, leading to
the commencement of other arguments several taking my side while some still disagreed. While this
debate made it eminently clear that there were mixed opinions and contrasting feelings over this
topic, we were able to discuss this issue and acknowledge each side's opinions and beliefs openly in
class, becoming acquainted with different ideas which caused some of us to think and see our stance
on the subject through different perspectives. I have often thought of this incident and many others,

The Influence Of The Iranian Culture Essay
Being Iranian has meant that I have often felt disengaged with this Kiwi culture that I have been
brought up in. Iranian culture has changed post–revolution, going from cultural, political and
personal freedom in a now, 37 years strong, heavy regulated Muslim society. Through this socio–
autobiography I will show how culture, gender and power have shaped my life, and made me the
person I am today. With Iranian culture having a heavy influence on all these. It is important to note
that the process from pre revolution to post revolution plays an important part in Iran and its culture.
I will be focussing on not only ethnicity, but also gender, which I have felt to notice more now at 18
years of age, and also the influence that power has in this heavily regulated society that is modern
day Iran, and how it has effected me.
Michel Foucault (2013) describes power as being a form of social control, in which there is "public
punishment of the body to private punishment of the mind and soul." The behaviour of the people of
Iran is shaped through this form of social control, with censorship of the internet, books, movies,
songs, clothing, learning in schools, television, and the food you can buy. Foucault (2013) calls this
"panopticism," power of surveillance dominates people's lives which in effect causes them to police
themselves. At 10 years old, girls are forced to wear a headscarf, however I chose to wear a head

percent of all Americans believe that freedom of speech should mean that people should have the

Free speech was, and still is included in a free society. Considering the fact that a free society
depends on a lot of basic things, in which free speech is one of them. Free speech is the foundation
that America was built on, the evidence supports this claim because of the fact that the document of
the first amendment was written based on free speech. In addition, It's a crucial role because of the
fact that we as citizens have a voice to condemn the negative things in our society, in which we live
in. As a result, we are always reconstructing and making freedom of speech our necessary rule.
Therefore, it's a top priority for a free society to have, and will always keep. As Ayaan Hirsi Ali
states, "Free speech is the bedrock of liberty and a free society. and yes, it includes the right to
blaspheme and offend." This obviously justifies that free speech is an essential component of a free

Findings 2.1 Who decides on the limitations of freedom of speech? The concept of Freedom of
speech is one which is held sovereign by many constitutions and individuals, especially within the

restricting freedom of speech to such a high standard is the population within prisons are soared to

The Pros And Cons Of Freedom Of Speech
Freedom of speech has central place in democratic societies. In the United States the First
Amendment protects free speech as essential right of its citizens. Other democracies, such as those
in western Europe also have free speech traditions, though none as extensive as the United States'.
But why should speech be free? Speech should be free because it provides for a good government,
promotes the realization of truth, allows diversity to thrive, and is a straightforward legislative
approach to speech. Free speech allows the people to hold their government accountable via the free
press. A condition of a good government is "freedom of information, and what has been called the
right to know" (Garton Ash 78), which is the responsibility of a free press to provide to the people,
especially when the government is not being transparent on its own. Without a press that is free to
report on public officials' and the government's activity, both are able to go unchecked, at the
expense of the people they are supposed to serve. In addition to this, freedom to expose public
figures' activities must be protected from frivolous accusations of libel because the ability to have a
journalist accused of libel for revealing the truth would "[threaten] the informing purpose of the
First Amendment" (Lewis 51). The United States embraced this idea when the Supreme Court case
New York Times v. Sullivan (1964) decision the court changed the standards that constitute libel to
the statement must be false, as well as published both knowingly and recklessly. This shifted the
burden of proof from the accused to the accuser. Not only does the press need to be free to report on
the activity of the government, but the people must be free to express their wants and needs to their
government. A fair and legitimate democracy requires that all people have a vote as well as an
opportunity to have their views heard. Garton Ash uses the words of Ronald Dworkin to explain
this, "a majority decision is not fair unless everyone has had the opportunity to express his or her
attitudes or opinions or fears or tastes or presuppositions or prejudices or ideals" (Garton Ash 77).
Free speech allows for political views to be expressed, so that the desires

tradition cultural identity they've held, and the new cultural identity they wish to adopt. "A torn
country... has a single predominant culture which places it in one civilization, but its leaders want to
shift it to another civilization. They say, in effect, 'We are different peoples and belong in different

that a small, powerful number of core states will be the centre of a new structure of civilizations.
France and Germany are examples of these states in the European Union. He goes on to describe
"core states", the divide between Western Europe (Protestantism & Catholicism) and Eastern Europe
(Orthodox Christianity & Islam), and the lack of a core state in Islam. In "Part 4: Clashes of

What Are Aaa's View Of Cultures?
The American Anthropological Association (AAA) has seen their share of criticism regarding their

within their power to fight for the rights of women worldwide, specifically pertaining to honor

The entire premise of their statement has been that you cannot judge a culture by another culture.
Therefore, the view of absolute moral claims goes against that. However, that is exactly what they

Their view that there is no such thing as absolute morality is a statement of absolute morality. The
AAA's statement is neither coherent nor convincing. It is by its own nature inconsistent. In this

statements are inconsistent and self–defeating. I presented what I believed their position was in an

Women´s Civil Rights and Ayaan Hirsi
Ayaan Hirsi Ali is a voice for women in the Muslim diaspora. Her outspoken nature and strong
criticism of the Qur'an have led to threats on her life by many religious leaders. Hirsi Ali was born
in 1969 in war–torn Somalia. Her father was a prominent member of the party responsible for the
Somalian Revolution, however autonomy was a constant struggle in the early life of Ayaan Hirsi
Ali. As a child, she was subjected to Female Genital Mutilation. As a young adult, her family tried
to force her into an arranged marriage with her cousin. These struggles became the catalyst for the
film she wrote, Submission, in which she discusses the verses in the Qur'an some men use to justify
supremacy over women. The compilation of these circumstances is what led to her career in civil
rights for women in the Muslim world. One passage Ayaan Hirsi Ali's film Submission focuses on,
is the menstruation of women: "It is harm, so keep away from wives during menstruation. And do
not approach them until they are pure. And when they have purified themselves, then come to them
from where Allah has ordained for you. Indeed, Allah loves those who are constantly repentant and
loves those who purify themselves" (The Qur'an: A New Translation, Surat Al–Baqarah Q 2:222).
The focus on ritual "cleanliness" denotes misogyny and a fear of menstruation in the Qur'an. This
ideology has been passed down through the generations and has mutated into patriarchal control of
the reproductive organs of many

My Sister Letter
It is difficult to even begin this letter, little sister, because I simply don't know where to start. We
have been through plenty of trials and tribulations – and I know very well how mature you are for
your young age – but there remain some pieces of the story that you don't know of. I am not here to
tell you of them, but there are some things that are impossible to understand without an outside
nudge, and I hope that in doing this you will come to accept the things I tell you, so that when
certain pieces come to light, you may look upon it without pain. People are not perfect. People are
not always kind. People are not always well–intentioned. And the truth is: our parents are people
too. You know this because despite all that I have done in my attempts to shield you, you have seen
them upset. You have seen them weep. You have seen them scream. You have watched our mother
starving herself, disappear for hours at a time after haphazardly throwing about words of death. You
have watched our father shut down, sleep for days, become frustrated at himself and at the world.
You have sat with your brother and I in a police car as our father was taken to prison, cried without
understanding as our mother wept, hidden as we have hidden. You were pulled into this world
without wanting any of this, without knowing it, and only with our brother and I to guide your
confusion as you came into the middle of the crisis. The problem is – well, the problem is that since

The Conflict Between The Middle East And Christianity
The world now is facing a set of significant problems. I believe that there are three main
International threats to global stability, the rapid rise of extremism, international disputes over
territories, and corruption. Solutions to these issues facing humankind are compulsory to avoid
some expected consequence. No more than two years ago people thought of Osama bin Laden and
al Qaeda organisation if we mentioned the nightmare, extremism. Instead, nowadays the new forces
of evil would be the ISIS, also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. ISIS originates
from Al–Qaeda in Iraq. I think that the occur of ISIS is under expectation. It has been a long history
of the religion conflict between the Islamism in the middle east and ... Show more content on

Firstly, here are some ambitious events showing that ISIS is threatening the world security and
order. On November 13th, 2015, the Islamic State killed more than 100 people at several locations
in Paris. On October 31st, 2015, 224 people died when a Russian jetliner crashes after leaving Egypt
's Sinai Peninsula, and ISIS claimed their responsibility. On March 20th, 2015, 137 death were
caused by suicide bombers attack two mosques in Yemen. Except the casualty, their violence
behaviours also aroused fear and chaos across the world. As a result, these terror attacks had
changed the way of our lives. According to Hedley Bull (1995), one of the most fundamental goals
of the anarchical society is upholding the independence of member states, maintaining peace, and
helping to secure the normative foundations of all social life, which includes the limitation of
violence (Jackson, 2013). To save the world basic human values, security, order and justice, those
countries in power must weaken if not topple these dangerous radicals from their pedestals. The
United States need to start a legal battle as the state is supposed to ensure the value of security and
protect their citizens. Other than that, another solution for the extremism is to wait until either the
world vital energy is not petrol oil anymore, or the oil resources in the middle east run out.
However, it will probably take a long time for this solution. If the United Nation is not able to get

Enlightenment Of Islam Book Report
The book written by Ayaan Hirisi Ali, Nomad, Growing up in a tribal and a very secluded join
Islamic Somalian clan, Ayaan Hirsi Ali was exposed to more violent, traditional views and strict
religious views. At the age of 22 when she relocated to a very western society, Holland, she was
exposed to a completely new ideology, accepting and freedom that has led to her better life. The
differences in values that has many caused the main sources of conflict between Islamic Civilization
and Western society.
Islamic and Western differ drastically between their principle ideologies. In Islamic thought,
Muslims blindly follow and passively follow the Quran and Allah. Many Muslims believe that Allah

Mortality becomes determined by human beings' critical reasoning and not an outside force. The
enlightenment of Islam would be a similar to the process of reaction, which happened to the
Christian Church centuries before the Enlightenment. There are a few core enlightenment values
that would be important to instill in Islam for it to change. First value of enlightenment is too seek
encouragement and reward for asking questions. Knowledge should be more based on inquiry and
not blasphemous or insolent acts. Second, Enlightenment should promote learning to be a life–long
experience that is for everyone, which is not just reserved for adults only, or men only, or a certain
clan of class. Third, there should be individual freedom that is related to the second value. Being
more critical and asking questions and seeking answer a person is already becoming freer on an
individual basis. There is also an importance to stop the violence, thus there would be a framework
of legal and community instrument to have the ability to resolve conflicts without resorting to

The Oppression of Women
The Oppression of Women Imperialism is used to gain authority and control over one state or
people in the form of an empire, based on practices of dominance and the idea of superiority. The
term can be found in the history of Japan, the Chinese Empire, Greece, ancient Egypt and the British
Empire. From 1934 to 1945, Hitler ran Germany by promoting anti–Semitism, Pan–Germanism, and
anti–communism to gain the support of the German people. In this time he was the leader of a mass
genocide which killed approximately six million Jews during World War II. During the 19th and
20th century, slavery was prominent in the United States where black women and men were
powered by their masters. Stolen from their original homes, they were forced to work for little or no
pay. In Islam, women are sold into arranged marriages at a very young age. They lose their property
to the men they are married to and are controlled by their husbands. In any civilization, it is easy to
see how imperialism has affected many different religious groups, people of different ethnicities,
and genders. Women have been targeted and discriminated throughout our world's history. Many
women have fought and gone against their society's rules to prove that justice should be given to
them. Women have been discriminated by their sex, jobs, pregnancy, race, and religion. In pre–
agricultural societies, women held equal positions as men. After adapting to sedentary cultures, men
began to believe the concept that women

this lack of correct "disagreement" with hard evidence. "This has become the depressing trend on
American university campuses, where the roster disinvited speakers and forced cancellations,"
Stephens gives a generalization of how this approach to "disagreement" has a negative effect. The
negative effect is the cancellation of these interesting speakers. Giving his audience the belief of the

Essay “Infidel”
About two years ago I read Ayaan Hirsi Ali's memoir "Infidel" and was immensely moved by her
story, especially the atrocities she went through in her childhood in Africa and the way she struggled
to flee from an oppressive life. At that time, I could not imagine that anyone (except fanatic
Muslims), let alone victims of the same oppression that she was, would not share her feelings and
views. However, the reading of Ian Buruma's Murder in Amsterdam sheds light on bigger and
obscure components of this story, which clearly influenced some people to disapprove her behavior
– even Islamic women. Like in Hirsi Ali's story, Ian Buruma also identifies nuances in the main
episode of the book – an episode that at face value could be described as a ... Show more content on

19). The shadow of World War II fueled the endeavor to put up a political system of tolerance and
well fare in which welcoming the diversity of races and cultures seems to serve as a justification for
the shameful past. "Never again, said the well–meaning defenders of the multicultural ideal, must
Holland betray a religious minority" (p. 51). Contradictorily, although being part of this story and
having his own family suffered from to the Nazi occupation, Van Gogh made of the Jews one target
of his cruel intellectual attacks. And like them, were the Muslims also his "victims". By calling
himself the "village idiot", Van Gogh thought he could say whatever he wished to whomever he
wanted. Ironically, he then turned to be a victim of the same violence he so fiercely abhorred, after
directing the film Submission. As a child, he was eccentric, provocative, and hard to deal with, said
his mother, and as an adult he turned into a fierce supporter of the Enlightment. Maybe that was one
of the reasons why he always contested whatever – and everything – that was incongruent to secular
values. "To shake things up was Van Gogh's aim in life", says Buruma (p. 70). No doubt that Van
Gogh found room for his harsh critiques against alienated immigrants in a time when the unlimited
tolerance, something that many Dutch are so proud of, seemed to be backfiring on themselves and
on their harmonious well–fare state. His

Buruma provides detailed insight into each character allowing the reader to contemplate the
motivation behind actions of each one. Buruma describes Theo Van Gogh, the assassinated, as a

public statements than his films. Van Gogh's family was made up of Calvinists, Socialists, and
Humanists all of which had an influence Theo Van Gogh in one way or another. Buruma emphasizes
Van Gogh's "desire to shock, to stir things up", a desire developed at a young age and carried into
his adulthood and films known for the shock value. There were to sides to Theo Van Gogh the first

Buruma notes Bouyeri was one of few to integrate into Dutch society through intellect,
perseverance, and good fortune, however, he becomes vulnerable when his ambitions are blocked
despite all his efforts to fit in and be successful. Bouyeri began to feel excluded from Dutch society
following the disappointments he experienced as a result of a long list of incidents, everything from
losing funding for a youth club to being ignored by girls he pursued.
Ayaan Hirsi Ali, a Somali born Dutch politician, was raised as a devote Muslim. She then fled from
an arranged to Holland. She attended university, learned to speak Dutch, and converted to atheism
with the same devotion she once had for her Muslim faith. Hirsi Ali eventually won a seat in the
Dutch parliament.
Each of the main characters presented by Buruma are absolutists in their right, but they are not,
however, typical representatives of certain social or political ideologies or groups that increasingly
find themselves in violent contention with each other. Theo van Gogh's absolutism was in his
support of free speech. His strong support for free speech was likely the result of the times, the
1960s, and his background including his family's ideologies. In Van Gogh's mind being offensive
meant one was saying what everyone should say, that being exactly as one thinks. Theo Van Gogh is
described by some to be the dominant "liberal" who values of the Dutch society over all else.

Living Behind The Veil In Saudi Arabia
A veil is a piece of sheer material worn by women to conceal their faces, that very piece of material
symbolizes sacredness. In traditional Christian religion the veil is worn by the bride in white on her
wedding day as she approaches her groom at the alter. He uncovers her face at the end of the
ceremony and they kiss. Once that tradition is done the bride and the groom live their lives together
without her ever having to wear the veil again. However, In the Muslim religion predominantly in
Saudi Arabia the veil is also considered sacred, but used for different purposes. For the women of
Saudi Arabia wearing the veil is part of their everyday life. In fact it is forbidden for them not to
wear it, their veil is worn routinely. The women of Saudi should know that living behind the veil is a
form of abuse toward them. A life in front of the veil is more enjoyable and liberating. Just because
they walk in the street without their veil does not make them promiscuous nor should they be
punished for it. Living behind the veil may be all the women of Saudi Arabia know, some may be
comfortable with it, others afraid of the consequences they will face for not wearing it. Either way
they do not have much of a choice since they are constantly chaperoned around by a male guardian
know as a "mahram", according to theweek.co.uk 4 "The guardian is often a male relative and will

Islam Is A Religion Of Violence
In the article "Islam Is a Religion of Violence", Ayaan Hirsi Ali discusses the long–debated question
of whether Islam is a religion of violence or peace. Islamic terrorism was brought to the forefront of
American and Western awareness on September 11, 2001 with the crash of the twin towers. More
acts of terrorism committed by Muslims followed throughout the years in different parts of the
world. To understand the cause of Islamic terrorism, Ali divides its adherents into three categories:
the fundamentalists or the "Medina Muslims" who envision a regime based on Islamic religious law,
the clear majority or the "Mecca Muslims" who are not inclined to practice violence or even
intolerance towards non–Muslims, and Muslim reformers or ... Show more content on

A year after moving to the U.S., she established the Ayaan Hirsi Ali Foundation to help protect
women in the West against "militant Islam". The author's efforts to strive for her goal and the
recognition she received shows she has gained the public's attention and takes her stance against
Islam seriously; however, despite the background, her writings on criticism of religious texts are
still debatable and unsuccessful.
The article, "Islam Is a Religion of Violence", is organized in a manner that makes it easy to follow
the argument. The author presents a question and then attempts to answer it, but it is evident the
conclusion is already decided from the title. This bias dictates the critical tone on the analysis of the
Islamic texts. It also leads to a strategic use of words and exclusion of critical information to appeal
to the particular audience of Muslims and non–Muslims who have some knowledge of Islam. It is
interesting that the author makes an important distinction "between Islam as a set of ideas and
Muslims as adherents" as the statement creates a logical fallacy against her thesis. It can be inferred
that the religious texts are only writings on paper; the people who follow the ideas interpret it to be
peaceful or violent. From the beginning of the article, the author's argument creates a contradiction.
Furthermore, it is acknowledged with the separation of Muslims into three groups that the problem
is Islam's followers and

For my paper I chose to write about the books Infidel by Ayaan Hirsi Ali and Frontiers of Love by

discuss central moral issues involving main characters in their use of theme. Ayaan in the book,
Infidel discusses her life and religious upbringings. Her neglectful father and her abusive mother
along with an arranged marriage. In the book, Frontiers of Love, Diana Chang discusses the racial

in this book aren't make believe but a true story of a young woman and her journy for the freedom

has some insight on racism that didn't just occur years ago but still occurs in some countrys today.
Each character in her book had their own racial issue to overcome even if it was against oneself. The
enlightening story of three main characters brings to light a look upon what it was like for some
mixed enthicities. Today, we still find racism in other ways, people are still today called names that
are of different "mixes". Each author although telling different stories made their main points

Female Oppression: Religion or Culture?
With the increase in current events taking place in the world in regards to religion, it is essential that
the common public be informed with correct information about religion. Unfortunately, it is known
that news gives false or one sided ideals of Islamic nations. News makes it especially difficult for its
audience to understand the differences between culture and religion. Writers have the power to
correct this misconception through their works, even if it is fictional writing. Author 's take on a big
responsibility of giving their readers an insightful and true perspective on culture and religion.
Popular scholars often choose to talk against Islam, while there is still a lack of scholars talking
positively. For example, "Ayaan Hirsi Ali, [an Irani author], renounces Islam because she says it
condones violence toward women, often reinforce rather than expand Western expectations about
the women" (Smith). Ali is strong in her beliefs and chooses to express them to people in a way that
they can understand. Similar strength is not publicized enough when it comes to supporting the true
ideals of Islam. Though Nawal El Saadawi identifies as a Muslim woman, she gives off a similar
impression of Islam as Ali. Saadawi shows many of the negative aspects of Islam and emphasizes
Western stereotypes. By using the most religious male characters in her novel, Woman at Point

Women Among Roles, Power, And Rights Essay
The Women Among Roles, Power, and Rights in Islam. Since the mention of women in an Islamic
context brings the notion that women under the Islamic cover live an oppressive, unfair, and
patriarchal lifestyle. Defending this situation, Amina Wadud in her book Qur 'an and Woman,
Muslim progressives have since quite a while ago contended that it is not the religion but rather a
patriarchal elucidation and usage of the Qur 'an that has kept women mistreated. Wadud sees that the
sacred texts are not the problem–source for the oppression that women experiencing under Islam,
she believes that who interpreting them and how they were interpreted are the sources of the
problem. Her book challenges the false concepts held by many Muslims (concepts that do not reflect
Quran and Islam) such as:" men are superior to women", men are in charge of women", "men are
natural leaders", " men rule the family and should get obedience from women", " women should not
leave the house unless it is necessary"," woman 's voice is taboo", etc. The author breaks down
specific verses and key words that have been used to oppress and limit women, to show that their
real meaning defies such oppression and limitation. Wadud indicates that the misogynist notion
regarding Islam was created by the patriarchal and frequently unpleasant society toward ladies;
individuals in intense positions, similar to say, male religious pioneers, would have each motivation
to translate the Qur 'an similarly. Along

one will try and make an effort to make the community aware of false accusations. Many people

Ayaan was hesitant thinking it was someone to criticize her, but instead Leon de Winter said, "I am

The Clash of Civilizations:
A Summary of Samuel Huntington's controversial Political Analysis and its Critics
"Culture and cultural identities, which at the broadest level are civilizational identities, are shaping
patterns of cohesion, disintegration, and conflict in the post–Cold War World" – Samuel Huntington
POLI 100 – F10N01!
Gabrielle Bishop
In a 1993 article published in Foreign Affairs, Harvard Professor of Government and Political
Scientist Samuel Huntington made a prediction for the 21st century that would go on to be both
disputed and supported by experts around the globe. As the Iron Curtain of ideology of the Cold
War had fallen, Huntington theorized that a new "Velvet ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Feles instead proposes that he "[pay] more attention to detail, of the sort provided by anthropology"
12. Only then, she states, will his predictions improve from a "constantly risk–running sort to a
relatively risk–averse one"13.
Huntington begins the next section, "Part 2: The Shifting Balance of Civilizations", by stating that
the power and influence the West once held is now dying14. Although the civilization did
experience success with the collapse of the Soviet Union, Huntington argues that the West has
become "exhausted"15. He brings to light two opposing arguments:
(A): That the West still holds a monopoly over economic consumption, military strength, and
technology;16 and,
(B): That the West is losing its influence and power.17
Huntington takes the side of Argument B, and expands on it further. He notes that while the West's
power and influence may indeed be declining, it will be a very slow process and is therefore not an
immediate threat presently to global forces 18. Huntington stresses the growing role religion is now
playing in global politics. He notes that religion often gains popularity in response to a society's
changing needs. He mentions, for example, how many South Koreans have abandoned their
traditional Buddhist beliefs in exchange for Christianity as their nation has become increasingly
urban and

Women Wear Veils In America

 • 1. Women Wear Veils In America In America it is quite unusual to see women wearing veils. In some parts of the world it is odd to see women with their faces exposed in public. Most women who wear veils every day are Muslim; the veil is called a hijab. The word hijab means a screen or curtain. Muslim women wear these veils for a few different reasons, to some it is a symbol of modesty, for others it is forced on them either by law or by the men in their family. Middle Eastern countries such as Turkey, Iran or Afghanistan have such laws. The women are only required to cover themselves when they are in public. In their home they are allowed to keep their faces uncovered. Muslim girls do not have to wear a veil until they reach puberty. In the mid–70s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
 • 2. The Pros And Cons Of Islam Nowadays , citizens often hear about the troubles Islamic radicals brings to countries, especially in the U.S. and Europe. It is known that people have several opinions on this particular religion, but the real question to be asked is whether Islam is really a religion of violence or peace. There are many Islamist groups– Isis and al–Quaida for example– that are responsible for acts of terrorism. For instance, the bombing of the twin towers in 2001 in New York, the London terrorist bombings that killed 52 innocent lives, the many bombings and attacks in Paris, etc. Personally, I think Islam is neither a religion of peace nor violence. Islam is not revolving around the idea of violence, but they don't necessarily act in a peaceful manner. Moreover, Islam is not just a religion to its followers, it is more an ideology where its followers live for their religion, I think this is why they go to such extreme measures. Ayaan Hirsi Ali Ayaan Hirsi Ali is a woman born in Somali as a Muslim. She is now a Dutch–American activist, feminist, author, scholar, and former Dutch politician. She has known the religion of Islam through the inside and outside perspective. Hirsi Ali stated "A reform of Islam is necessary and possible." She believes that there definitely needs to be change in the religion of Islam. I agree with this statement because there is definite need for change, although I am concerned that it might not be possible. Due to the many followers of Islamic ways along with the ... In 1997 of the term "hate crime" may seem now to sacrifice the attention it has received in the past several years, these types of offenses such as (abuse, have been around for many years. From that moment on the 1964 Civil Rights Act, people have been victims of crimes and perpetrators. But most hate crimes are real because of the skin color and their religion. People may feel some type of way because the population is not like them. It may not make a difference in the number of days the person may spend incarcerated, but it makes a huge difference for the people to hold people accountable for what they did. Hate crimes are perpetrated because the victims are in some way considered different, some politicians play the racism card to govern votes and grab power , and can create public health issues. Hate Crimes are perpetrated considering the victims are different because everybody forsake not like each other. People have different flaws and people have different ways of saying and doing things. • 4. Does Islam Need Reformation Or Do Islamic Societies Need... While lacking any academic credentials, these islamophobic figures, in their scorched–earth view of Islam, wage a campaign that reduces an entire scripture of 114 chapters and over 6,000 verses to a few de–contextualized verses, and their criticism of Islam as grossly simplistic and desperate attempt to malign a world religion and a human civilization comparable to others. For a religion, unlike Christianity and Judaism, that didn 't experience Renaissance, the Reformation and the Enlightenment, and Industrial Revolution, Islam has been comparably tolerant at the beginning as well as today, and slowly improving its core human rights conditions.
Does Islam need Reformation or do Islamic societies need Enlightenment? Since the Sept 11, 2001, there have been many calls from within Islamic societies or outside of it pushing for a reformation of Islamic practices. The West 's Reformation of 16th century is the supposed template for today 's Muslim countries. This would be a movement to counter the fundamentalists and theocratic regimes that would pave the way for desirable outcomes like human rights and separation of religion and state.
Salman Rushdie, the author of Satanic Verses, explains it this way: "What is needed is a move beyond tradition–nothing less than a reform movement to bring the core concepts of Islam into the modern age, a Muslim Reformation to ... • 5. Global Affairs As A Multidisciplinary Field Essay Introduction Global Affairs is a very broad discipline that involves several fields of study. In fact depending on the source, the definition of Global Affairs can have many meanings. Since Global Affairs covers many areas, most people within the discipline chose to focus on one area of study. Discussion and debate are important within Global Affairs. They allow for education about issues that are occurring in the world and provide suggestions for problems to be fixed. International conferences and debates in scholarship are two of the ways in which people in Global Affairs interact to make change in the world. Global Affairs Definition Within various contexts, Global Affairs can be defined in several ways. George Mason University describes Global Affairs as being a multidisciplinary field. At Mason, Global Affairs covers international politics, economics, culture, and international development. It also focuses on these issues in specific regions of the world (George Mason University). The New York Times defines Global Affairs as issues as international politics, economics, and culture. Global Affairs studies and analyzes international interactions, mainly through a political lens. The New York Times does not have a specific definition for Global Affairs. However, one popular section is the "International Relations" section. Most of the articles focus on political issues between nations (International New York Times). George Mason and the New York Times both give ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
 • 6. Analysis Of Ayaan Hirsi Ali Speaks Of Honor Killings And... Ayaan Hirsi Ali speaks of honor killings and forced marriages in Middle Eastern society in the The AHA Foundation 2nd Annual Conference. She begins with describing her personal situation when she was younger; her arranged marriage to a relative and then her escape to the Netherlands at the age of twenty–two in an effort to avoid this marriage where she was met with an entirely different culture where the pressure of the honor of the family was not forced upon females by both female and male parties within the family. She noted how Dutch women wore what they pleased, failed to have rigid curfews, had romantic relationships as they desired, and did not have to obey their male guardians in every aspect contrary to the adamant regulations imposed on women in the Middle Eastern society she grew up in. She describes how the difference between regular domestic abuse and honor violence is that honor violence is justified by the perpetrator by their culture and religion; they claim they have no other choice because the woman in question defiled the families honor and there was no other option available other than to kill her for the sake of honor. When a woman born in this culture begins to defy her family, the family will either commit an honor killing, or marry the girl off, Ali states. When honor killings are performed they are almost always made to look accidental, and can range from shootings, stranglings, drownings or even beheadings when a point is to be made to other ... • 8. Ayaan Hirsi Ali Research Paper How would you react to someone criticizing your religion? Would you hate them or defend them, in the name of the First Amendment? This is a question people have been pondering after listening to Ayaan Hirsi Ali's various interviews and speeches. Ayaan is a Somali–born woman who fled to the Netherlands when she was around 23, to escape the marriage her father had arranged for her to her cousin. She is known as a big criticizer of the religion of Islam, and this is largely in part because of her own experiences (which you will learn about later in this paper). Ayaan possesses many qualities that would make people follow a leader: she shows bravery and perseverance in continuing to speak out about her opinions on Islam, even though many people ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... And as soon as you really take note of it, you're going to have to ask yourself, "What have I got to do with this?"."). She also delves into unsafe territory in saying what she says, which she acknowledges: "People have been warning about this backlash for 30 years." (Bethune). This shows just how persistent she is (though many people, even other Muslims here in America, have sent her death threats because of her speeches). These are not just good traits to have for a leader, but anyone could have these. Being brave, persevering, and persisting are all great skills to have in this world. They will help you with many things: getting good grades, a job, a raise, etc. If students like us will take away anything from learning about Ayaan Hirsi Ali, it should be that you should not be afraid to speak your mind, and to not judge a book by it's cover (because Ayaan used to be a devout Muslim but is now an outspoken atheist). Everyone disagrees about Ayaan. They say she shouldn't be so critical of Islam, and that not everyone is bad just because of their religion. This is a great thing to discuss, because no two people are exactly the same: One person may think that what she is doing is fine, but someone else may say that Ayaan is being too harsh to others. Whatever you may believe, you should know that Ayaan Hirsi Ali has changed the way people think about religion and the restriction of speech ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
 • 9. The Harm In Hate Speech Analysis Jeremy Waldron argues in favor of hate speech restrictions in his book "The Harm in Hate Speech". He presents the central argument that vulnerable minorities are in need of hate speech regulation to protect them from harm. Another argument he presents is that such regulation must be a content– based regulation, as opposed to a time, place, and manner restriction that is usually employed to prevent certain kinds of speech. A final argument he uses is that speech is the harmful action, rather than speech simply causing harmful actions. I do not find his arguments to be compelling enough reasons to support restricting free speech with hate speech laws. Waldron's central argument is that vulnerable minorities need and deserve government ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He believes that since hate speech legislation is seen as acceptable and necessary in most developed nations that it is therefore the principles are also applicable to the United States. He openly admits that he does not accept any assumptions that make up free–speech jurisprudence, because they are contrary to his views on how society needs to address hateful speech. The assumptions he rejects include the tendency for truth to prevail in the marketplace of ideas, the effectiveness of counter speech, and that content–based restrictions are bad. However, these ideas cannot be simply dismissed because they are central to the American perspective on the necessity of hate speech legislation. Waldron fails to address in an effective way why he is able to dismiss these central ideas. In doing so, he is practically admitting to the reader that his ideas are based outside of the framework of the reality of American free speech tradition. The strength of his argument suffers from the fact that his argument is not applicable to the reality of American society's views on free speech. Waldron also argues that the harms caused by hate speech are "constituted by speech, rather than merely caused by speech" (166). He believes that the element that damages the dignity and assurance of vulnerable minorities is the speech itself, not actions that they speech promotes or the way that it is ... • 11. Infidel My Life Story Summary Introduction The book being reviewed is Infidel: My Life Story by Ayaan Hirsi Ali. Ali was born in Somalia, though due to her father's involvement in the Somali civil war she and along with her family were constantly moving. The majority of her upbringing was spent in Saudi Arabia, Kenya and Ethiopia. After fleeing to the Netherlands, to avoid a forced marriage, Ali assimilated herself into the Dutch society and achieved her M.A. in political science. Today she is established as a women's rights activist with her own foundation called AHA. Through her foundation Ali is attempting to aid in the prevention of violence against children and women in the US, along with promoting the status of women and girls globally. Ali is otherwise known as an author, and former politician. She is well known for her unpopular and controversial views on Islam. Ali argues that the foundation of Islam contradicts Western democratic views, mainly women's rights, in her memoir. Along with writing this autobiography, Ali has written countless of other books including Heretic: Why Islam Needs a Reformation Now, Nomad, and The Caged Virgin. Purpose Ali's purpose with this book was to bring light to how the controversial aspect of the Quran, which completely endorses both male dominance and female torment. The main ... • 12. Effects Of Marriage On Society : A Young Man Once Lived... Emile Bongkiyung Professor Brothers English 1010 15 April 2012 The Effects of Polygamous Marriages in our Societies A young man once lived happily with his wife and eight children. After his eighth child turned out to be a girl, he was a little bit upset but was still in love with his family. When he decided to take in a second wife in order to guarantee a male child, the family started having new problems. Some of the kids became traumatized since they had not been used to problems. The husband lost his job since his family problems were affecting his job performance. The family that has always been happy turned out overnight to be the contrary. The husband regretted the mistake he made by taking a second wife. Polygamy is illegal in most of the countries around the world including United States; it should also be outlawed in the practicing countries because it can cause unfairness towards women, poverty, jealousy, child abuse and can impact health. There exists many types of marriages like polyandry, polygyny, monogamy, and polygamy just to name a few. Polygamy was popular in the early 14th and 15th centuries, but now in our modern world polygamy has been outlawed in most of the countries, especially in the developed nations. Polygamy is still practiced in some countries in the East and in Africa. Like Cameroon, Nigeria, Afghanistan, Burkina Faso, Egypt, Pakistan, Palestine, Yemen, South Africa, the list is long. • 13. Personal Position : The Issue Of Abortion And Pro-Life One day in class, the topic of abortion and pro–life arose, concerning the issue of whether a woman should possess the right to decide to keep or obliterate her baby's life. I remember one girl candidly asserting her beliefs that this significant right belonged to the woman concerned and she should be able to make this choice because after all, it was her carrying the child and subsequently going to be accountable for such a substantial responsibility. Several other adolescents joined in agreeing with her point, some adding support, and others bringing up various examples. Listening to my classmates' arguments, I could not help but disagree with several of their direct statements concerning this issue, leading me to question them if the power to keep or take away life from a powerless, defenseless human being unable to speak up for itself lies really in our hands, leading to the commencement of other arguments several taking my side while some still disagreed. While this debate made it eminently clear that there were mixed opinions and contrasting feelings over this topic, we were able to discuss this issue and acknowledge each side's opinions and beliefs openly in class, becoming acquainted with different ideas which caused some of us to think and see our stance on the subject through different perspectives. Iranian culture has changed post–revolution, going from cultural, political and personal freedom in a now, 37 years strong, heavy regulated Muslim society. Through this socio– autobiography I will show how culture, gender and power have shaped my life, and made me the person I am today. With Iranian culture having a heavy influence on all these. It is important to note that the process from pre revolution to post revolution plays an important part in Iran and its culture. I will be focussing on not only ethnicity, but also gender, which I have felt to notice more now at 18 years of age, and also the influence that power has in this heavily regulated society that is modern day Iran, and how it has effected me. Michel Foucault (2013) describes power as being a form of social control, in which there is "public punishment of the body to private punishment of the mind and soul." The behaviour of the people of Iran is shaped through this form of social control, with censorship of the internet, books, movies, songs, clothing, learning in schools, television, and the food you can buy. Foucault (2013) calls this "panopticism," power of surveillance dominates people's lives which in effect causes them to police themselves. Based on the supporting evidence from the AP–National Constitution Center Poll, the majority of Americans are agreeing with the idea of freedom of speech. Free speech is the foundation that America was built on, the evidence supports this claim because of the fact that the document of the first amendment was written based on free speech. In addition, It's a crucial role because of the fact that we as citizens have a voice to condemn the negative things in our society, in which we live in. As a result, we are always reconstructing and making freedom of speech our necessary rule. Therefore, it's a top priority for a free society to have, and will always keep. Findings 2.1 Who decides on the limitations of freedom of speech? The concept of Freedom of speech is one which is held sovereign by many constitutions and individuals, especially within the American states. • 19. The Pros And Cons Of Freedom Of Speech Freedom of speech has central place in democratic societies. In the United States the First Amendment protects free speech as essential right of its citizens. Other democracies, such as those in western Europe also have free speech traditions, though none as extensive as the United States'. But why should speech be free? Speech should be free because it provides for a good government, promotes the realization of truth, allows diversity to thrive, and is a straightforward legislative approach to speech. Free speech allows the people to hold their government accountable via the free press. A condition of a good government is "freedom of information, and what has been called the right to know" (Garton Ash 78), which is the responsibility of a free press to provide to the people, especially when the government is not being transparent on its own. Without a press that is free to report on public officials' and the government's activity, both are able to go unchecked, at the expense of the people they are supposed to serve. In addition to this, freedom to expose public figures' activities must be protected from frivolous accusations of libel because the ability to have a journalist accused of libel for revealing the truth would "[threaten] the informing purpose of the First Amendment" (Lewis 51). The United States embraced this idea when the Supreme Court case New York Times v. Sullivan (1964) decision the court changed the standards that constitute libel to the statement must be false, as well as published both knowingly and recklessly. This shifted the burden of proof from the accused to the accuser. Not only does the press need to be free to report on the activity of the government, but the people must be free to express their wants and needs to their government. A fair and legitimate democracy requires that all people have a vote as well as an opportunity to have their views heard. Garton Ash uses the words of Ronald Dworkin to explain this, "a majority decision is not fair unless everyone has had the opportunity to express his or her attitudes or opinions or fears or tastes or presuppositions or prejudices or ideals" (Garton Ash 77). Free speech allows for political views to be expressed, so that the desires ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

"A torn country... has a single predominant culture which places it in one civilization, but its leaders want to shift it to another civilization. Her outspoken nature and strong criticism of the Qur'an have led to threats on her life by many religious leaders. Hirsi Ali was born in 1969 in war–torn Somalia. Her father was a prominent member of the party responsible for the Somalian Revolution, however autonomy was a constant struggle in the early life of Ayaan Hirsi Ali. As a child, she was subjected to Female Genital Mutilation. As a young adult, her family tried to force her into an arranged marriage with her cousin. These struggles became the catalyst for the film she wrote, Submission, in which she discusses the verses in the Qur'an some men use to justify supremacy over women. The compilation of these circumstances is what led to her career in civil rights for women in the Muslim world. One passage Ayaan Hirsi Ali's film Submission focuses on, is the menstruation of women: "It is harm, so keep away from wives during menstruation. And do not approach them until they are pure. And when they have purified themselves, then come to them from where Allah has ordained for you. Indeed, Allah loves those who are constantly repentant and loves those who purify themselves" (The Qur'an: A New Translation, Surat Al–Baqarah Q 2:222). The Oppression of Women The Oppression of Women Imperialism is used to gain authority and control over one state or people in the form of an empire, based on practices of dominance and the idea of superiority. The term can be found in the history of Japan, the Chinese Empire, Greece, ancient Egypt and the British Empire. From 1934 to 1945, Hitler ran Germany by promoting anti–Semitism, Pan–Germanism, and anti–communism to gain the support of the German people. In this time he was the leader of a mass genocide which killed approximately six million Jews during World War II. During the 19th and 20th century, slavery was prominent in the United States where black women and men were powered by their masters. Stolen from their original homes, they were forced to work for little or no pay. In Islam, women are sold into arranged marriages at a very young age. They lose their property to the men they are married to and are controlled by their husbands. In any civilization, it is easy to see how imperialism has affected many different religious groups, people of different ethnicities, and genders. Women have been targeted and discriminated throughout our world's history. Many women have fought and gone against their society's rules to prove that justice should be given to them. • 30. Living Behind The Veil In Saudi Arabia A veil is a piece of sheer material worn by women to conceal their faces, that very piece of material symbolizes sacredness. In traditional Christian religion the veil is worn by the bride in white on her wedding day as she approaches her groom at the alter. He uncovers her face at the end of the ceremony and they kiss. Once that tradition is done the bride and the groom live their lives together without her ever having to wear the veil again. However, In the Muslim religion predominantly in Saudi Arabia the veil is also considered sacred, but used for different purposes. For the women of Saudi Arabia wearing the veil is part of their everyday life. In fact it is forbidden for them not to wear it, their veil is worn routinely. The women of Saudi should know that living behind the veil is a form of abuse toward them. A life in front of the veil is more enjoyable and liberating. The article, "Islam Is a Religion of Violence", is organized in a manner that makes it easy to follow the argument. The author presents a question and then attempts to answer it, but it is evident the conclusion is already decided from the title. This bias dictates the critical tone on the analysis of the Islamic texts. It also leads to a strategic use of words and exclusion of critical information to appeal to the particular audience of Muslims and non–Muslims who have some knowledge of Islam. It is interesting that the author makes an important distinction "between Islam as a set of ideas and Muslims as adherents" as the statement creates a logical fallacy against her thesis. Ali is strong in her beliefs and chooses to express them to people in a way that they can understand. Similar strength is not publicized enough when it comes to supporting the true ideals of Islam. Though Nawal El Saadawi identifies as a Muslim woman, she gives off a similar impression of Islam as Ali. Saadawi shows many of the negative aspects of Islam and emphasizes Western stereotypes. Application of Ecological System Theory Microsystem Protective factors. There aren't a lot of protective factors for Ayaan Hirsi Ali within her microsystem. One protective factor that I found involved her sister. Ayaan's sister would try to help her learn what was appropriate and what wasn't in their culture. • 36. Women Among Roles, Power, And Rights Essay The Women Among Roles, Power, and Rights in Islam. Since the mention of women in an Islamic context brings the notion that women under the Islamic cover live an oppressive, unfair, and patriarchal lifestyle. Defending this situation, Amina Wadud in her book Qur 'an and Woman, Muslim progressives have since quite a while ago contended that it is not the religion but rather a patriarchal elucidation and usage of the Qur 'an that has kept women mistreated. Wadud sees that the sacred texts are not the problem–source for the oppression that women experiencing under Islam, she believes that who interpreting them and how they were interpreted are the sources of the problem. Her book challenges the false concepts held by many Muslims (concepts that do not reflect Quran and Islam) such as:" men are superior to women", men are in charge of women", "men are natural leaders", " men rule the family and should get obedience from women", " women should not leave the house unless it is necessary"," woman 's voice is taboo", etc. The author breaks down specific verses and key words that have been used to oppress and limit women, to show that their real meaning defies such oppression and limitation. Wadud indicates that the misogynist notion regarding Islam was created by the patriarchal and frequently unpleasant society toward ladies; individuals in intense positions, similar to say, male religious pioneers, would have each motivation to translate the Qur 'an similarly. • 37. The Prisoners In Plato's Allegory Of The Cave In Plato's "Allegory of the Cave,", three prisoners have been trapped in a cave for their entire lives... They cannot look at anything, but the stone wall in front of them. Since birth, these men have been stuck and have never seen anything but the interior of the cave. Behind the prisoners is a fire; its flame gives off shadows of the objects behind it. One day, one of the prisoners manages to escape from his bindings and leave. The prisoner is shocked at the new world outside. As he becomes used to his new surroundings, he realizes his former view of reality was wrong. Returning to the cave, he informs the other prisoners of this, however, they do not believe him. This experience is similar to how Ayann Hirsi Ali felt in the book, Infidel. ... Similar to Ayaan escaping her Islamic cage, the man in, "The Allegory of the Cage" escaped his cave. This shows what motivation can accomplish, and how one will try and make an effort to make the community aware of false accusations. Many people disliked her after stating her beliefs when broadcasted and one day a famous Dutch writer called. Ayaan was hesitant thinking it was someone to criticize her, but instead Leon de Winter said, "I am only going to say how much I admire you. I watched you on TV... what you're doing for us is great" (Ali 290). Things she was doing was stating how there are societies that do not abuse women and their freedom is wealthy and peaceful. Being a well–known politician she wanted to make a change and this issue spoke to her heart when in the Parliament. Idea's like "art exhibits to spark discussion of women's positions in Islam... The exhibit would illustrate with simple images the suffering endured by women in the name of Allah" (Ali 307). These efforts to spread the word were similar to the man in the "Allegory of the Cave". Working to full potential, she got a motion to get police stations to record how many killings took place in Holland and by great surprise, 11 muslim girls were killed by their families. (Ali 309). From the building blocks of this journey, with enduring the pain daily as a child to growing up with how to handle situations... Ayaan became stronger and stronger mentally and physically. Her goals were successes and she used her past as a step ladder to make the world a better place. Never forget the revolutionizing story of Ayaan Hirsi ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Huntington begins the next section, "Part 2: The Shifting Balance of Civilizations", by stating that the power and influence the West once held is now dying14. Although the civilization did experience success with the collapse of the Soviet Union, Huntington argues that the West has become "exhausted"15. He brings to light two opposing arguments: (A): That the West still holds a monopoly over economic consumption, military strength, and technology;16 and, (B): That the West is losing its influence and power.17 Huntington takes the side of Argument B, and expands on it further.
