2. A Nation Divided
England was a nation at war. Torn
between the noble families, Lancasters
and the Yorks, the War of the Roses kept
the nation in turmoil.
Since 1461, the throne switched between
the York and Lancanstrian decendents of
Edward III.

3. Battle of Bosworth
The real matter was decided on the battlefield,
August 22, 1485, at the Battle of Bosworth Field.
It was here that Henry and his forces met
with Richard III and Henry won the crown. It
was truly through the defeat of Richard and the
'right of conquest' that Henry (decendent of the
Lancastrian line) claimed the throne. It was
solidified however, by his marriage to Elizabeth
of York, the eldest child of the late king, Edward
IV.
4. Henry VII
Son of Edmund Tudor and Margaret
Beaufort.
The main problem facing Henry was
restoring faith and strength in the
monarchy.
He increased the wealth of England.
He established the Tudor dynasty.
5. Henry had seven
children by Elizabeth
of York, four of whom
survived infancy:
Arthur, who died
shortly after his
marriage to Catherine
of Aragon, Henry,
Margaret and Mary.
6. Henry VIII
Henry was just shy of 18 years old when
he became king in 1509, and had been
preparing for it from the time of his older
brother Arthur's death.
After receiving a papal dispensation,
Henry marries his dead brother’s wife,
Catherine of Aragon, about 2 months after
becoming king.

14. Henry’s Progeny
Henry secured his line of succession when
he passed his 3rd act of succession in Feb.
1544 which named Edward first in the line
and also included Mary and Elizabeth.

“consumption” on July
6, 1553 at the age of
15.
16. Mary I
Born Feb. 1516
Deposed her Protestant
cousin Lady Jane Grey after
her brother’s death and
claimed the throne.
Married cousin Phillip of
Spain in 1554.
Died Nov. 1558, possibly
from ovarian cysts or uterine
cancer.
17. Elizabeth I
Born Sept. 7, 1533
Became queen Nov.
17, 1558 at age of
25

Never married
18. Died March 24, 1603 (likely bronchial infection,
organ failure or poisoning)
Her 44 year reign became known as “The
Golden Age.”
