2. Module Assessment
Demonstrate a critical knowledge of how to create a
safe effective learning environment to meet the
needs of all pupils.
4000 words:
•2000 word assignment
•2000 word equivalent appendix – including personal
reflections on the three PPP scenarios (behaviour,
assessment, SEN)
3. To be submitted electronically via Turnitin. You will need to create one
document which includes a front sheet, plagiarism statement and
appendix.
4. Demonstrate a critical knowledge of how to
create a safe effective learning environment to
meet the needs of all pupils.
Demonstrate a critical knowledge and understanding of the
range of learners and learning and the factors that influence
these;
5. Demonstrate a critical knowledge of how to
create a safe effective learning environment to
meet the needs of all pupils.
Demonstrate knowledge and critical understanding drawing
upon local, national and international perspectives of the
impact that settings, environments, contexts and community
have on learning;
6. In order to narrow the
focus for your
assignment you should
use a ‘critical lens’ to
enable you to examine
how to create a safe,
effective learning
environment to meet
the needs of all
learners from a
particular perspective.
7. For example:
• teacher feedback/responses (e.g. the impact of verbal and non-verbal
responses, marking, school/home communication, reports etc );
• working with parents/carers;
• the three relationships of the behaviour for learning conceptual
framework (Powell and Tod, 2004).
There are a number of other perspectives or ‘lenses’ that you could
choose as a focus for your essay. You can submit questions about the
suitability of lenses through the discussion board
8. Appendix
You will be expected to include evidence linked to three scenarios
explored during the module. This evidence should include
• 3 short (2000 word equivalent in total) personal reflections on three
scenarios. You will draw upon these to support points you are making
within your assignment.
9. • Your scenario reflections should include theory which reflects
effective practice;
• Scenario reflections can be presented in a range of ways which can
include diagrams, drawings, photos, flow charts and tables;
• You can annotate your scenario reflections and show links to your
own professional teaching placement;
• You can also include other relevant material in your appendix but this
must be referred to in your assignment;
• Other evidence may include knowledge of safeguarding, your own
work in school, annotated lesson plans, plan of a classroom
environment, annotated pupil work, pupil progress records, teacher
feedback, lesson evaluations and observation records (this list is not
exhaustive).
10. Is the word count for the appendix strictly
2000 words
No, it is 2000 words equivalent for your reflections but you may wish to
include additional supporting evidence.
IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU REFER TO ALL APPENDICES IN YOUR
MAIN ESSAY
11. What are the key words/phrases I will need to
address?
Safe
Environment
Effective
Learning
Meeting needs
All learners
12. On the next slides are some questions you might
need to consider and how they might relate to the
three scenarios.
Behaviour (Bullying)
Assessment (Formative/Summative)
SEN/I
13. Safe Effective Learning Environment
How can we create a safe space for learning?
Should our emphasis be on the physical environment or on the emotional
environment?
For instance, should we be helping the children to understand and manage
their own emotions and to what extent is it important that we understand
our own?
What are a teacher’s responsibilities in respect of safeguarding and how do
these relate to learning?
How can we create a culture that encourages children to feel safe enough to
take risks in their learning?
What are the potential benefits in respect of children’s attitudes to learning
in building classroom cultures around concepts of ‘growth mindset’ (Dweck,
2014) or ‘FAIL’ (First Attempts in Learning)?
14. Effective Learning Environments
What do we mean by effective learning environments?
How do we measure pupil progress?
Should our emphasis in the primary school be on academic progress or
should our focus be on social and emotional learning?
How do we encourage positive behaviours for learning?
What assessment strategies can we use to determine whether learning
is effective?
How can we support children in setting their own targets and using self
and peer assessment to measure their success and to set next steps in
their learning?
15. Meeting the needs of all learners
How do we create an inclusive learning space?
What are the barriers to effective learning and how can we address
them?
What are inclusive teaching strategies?
How ‘effective’ are interventions for children with EAL or SEN?
What is ‘quality first teaching’?
What do we mean by ‘high expectations’?
What is the impact of labelling on emotions and learning?
16. A possible structure
Introduction:
• Acknowledge the complexity of factors involved in creating safe,
effective and inclusive learning environments and the diversity of
classroom contexts (you might reference a teacher’s safeguarding
responsibilities here)
• Introduce the concept of creating a classroom culture in which
children feel safe and empowered in their learning.
• Explain the critical lens e.g. ‘what is the importance of teacher
feedback for creating safe, effective and inclusive learning
environments’? This is the ‘golden thread’ that will be woven through
the assignment.
17. Main essay:
Discuss with reference to the three scenarios the impact of teacher feedback
e.g. by considering:
• How might the way a teacher responds to behaviour incidents impact on
the learning culture in the classroom? Refer to the bullying scenario
reflection which considers the incident from the perspectives of child,
parents and bully.
• How might a teacher’s written and verbal responses impact on a child’s
learning? Refer to the assessment scenario reflection and a critical analysis
of a formative assessment approach.
• What is meant by ‘high expectations for all learners’ and what are the
implications for teacher’s responses to children with special educational
needs? Refer to the SEN scenario and a reflection on how a teacher might
respond to a particular need from a medical (deficit), social or capability
model perspective.
18. Conclusion
Draw the golden thread together and consider implications for your
future practice for instance by explaining key principles for teacher
response and feedback that will support a safe, effective and inclusive
learning environment.
19. In your assignment you will need to:
• Demonstrate a critical awareness of what you believe as key issues that should be
considered when creating a safe and effective learning environment;
• Demonstrate wide awareness of theory that underpins effective teaching and
learning e.g. behaviour for learning, assessment, inclusion, SEND, EAL and
safeguarding;
• Draw on wider reading from a range of sources including current literature used
as an integral support for your discussion;
• Include a clearly presented list of references (please include references used
within your appendix in one list after your main essay);
• Consider if subheadings will help the reader;
• Ensure you do not mention children or schools by name;
• Maintain a critical analytical style rather than just describe examples from
practice.
Editor's Notes
In order to address the assignment aims you will need to show that you understand that each learner is unique that there is a vast range of factors that impact on learners and learning .
The assignment also requires you to demonstrate a critical understanding of the impact of settings, environments, contexts and community have on learning and to refer to local, national and international perspectives. You will need to draw on theoretical perspectives to do this.
You can also choose to use the three lenses of the scenarios however if you do you may find that you are just touching at the surface level of each area rather than looking at a narrow focus in more depth and using the scenario reflections as supporting evidence.

- End is not the end, if fact E.N.D. means "Effort Never Dies"
- If you get No as an answer, remember N.O. means "Next Opportunity". (A.P.J. Abdul Kalam)
