Fight Club (Fincher 1999)
The filmFight Club portrays the mental struggle with masculinity of Jack (Edward Norton)
through a split personality with ‘ideal man’ Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt). The filmencompasses
several interesting editing techniques because of this complex plot.
The first technique that I found interesting when viewing the film was its use of subliminal
message-like inserts of the image of Tyler. Single frames of the character were inputted into
shots behind Jack to reveal to the audience his entrance into Jack’s life and the film. This
method of editing is both interesting and synonymous to the flow of the character
development throughout the film.
Similarly, another editing technique is utilised in the filmto highlight the entrance of a
particular character. When Marla Singer, the only female character, is introduced to the
spectator the pace of the edit and the footage itself is slowed to enable the audience to
realise her importance to the plot of the film. The editing technique of altering the speed
also allows Marla to be fetishised through her appearance, reinforcing her role as the only
female in a male dominated film.
