Goodfellas- Helicopter sequence
The cuts utilised in the clip are fast paced and are cut to motion, enabling the sequence to
move smoothly to the rhythm of the score. This enables a more natural motion for the
spectator.
The clip also utilises the fast cuts to condense the time that it would take for the character
to move between the different locations of the house and the car, keeping the audience’s
attention by portraying an everyday action in a more fast paced and interesting way.
Match-on-action is also used to reveal to the spectator what the character is looking at. This
additionally holds the audience’s interest as the scene jumps from an everyday occurrence
to something more extraordinary, the helicopter. The pace of the sequence increases after
the jump cut to the helicopter is shown, creating tension as the character drives, continually
looking out of the window, suggesting to the audience that the helicopter is of some
importance to him.
