City of God (Meirelles)
The Brazilian film‘City Of God’ follows the life of Rocket, a young boy growing up in one of the
most dangerous favelas in Brazil and his encounters with the different characters within the
slum.
Flashbacks are heavily utilised within the filmin order to provide the audience with new
information about each character, or group of characters, that Rocket encounters. The first of
these flashbacks features Rocket seemingly spinning in a circle as the time changes from
present day to ‘The Sixties’. The editing used to create this illusion is a dissolve, fading present
day Rocket into his younger self. I feel that this use of editing technique works well to transform
the setting of the film, taking the audience with it, clearly stating the change in time. The slow
pace of the dissolve edit is also in keeping with the rhythm of the filmand introduces the use of
dissolve edits to change the time that the film is portraying.
