Montages
The montage edit is utilised in almost every film in order to quickly display the passage of time
or to develop a character.
The use of montages to compact time in this way enables the filmmaker to get a point across to
their audience using as little screen time as possible, therefore capturing the audience’s
attention rather than losing it to long sequences.
One of the most iconic uses of a montage is featured in the film Rocky (John G. Avildsen 1976)
which displays the central protagonist, Rocky Balboa, training in order to win a fight. The
footage is cut to uplifting music enabling the audience to engage and empathise with the
character as he goes through this sequence of development. The utilisation of a montage in this
way engages the audience with the film’s plot and characters as well as to compact and reveal
the passage of time within a sequence.
