Eisenstein 1925 Slaughter Scene
The use of juxtaposition in film creates meaning and often tension within a scene.
Eisenstein’s utilisation of juxtaposition in ‘Strike’ during the slaughter scene builds tension
by cutting between images of people running with the slaughter of a cow. This insinuates to
the audience that the people running are fleeing some kind of brutality similar to that of
what the cow is facing. They are wearing military uniform also suggesting that they are
animalistic, as cows are also difficult to depict between one another as soldiers in uniform
were. This also denotes that war is essentially causing men to be sent to their own slaughter
just as the cow is within the scene. The gruesome imagery juxtaposed within the sequence
additionally causes the spectator to feel shocked.
