Mood Changes In The Trailer
Mood: The mood portrayed in this trailer changes throughout. In the beginning, it is suspenseful
because of the upbeat music and the few amount of words. It pulls you in making you wonder what
will happen next and if Jessica will be okay. Then the mood changes to depressed. Jessica starts to
worry if her life will ever be the same or if she will ever run again. The sad music creates a gloomy
atmosphere and the pictures show her struggle. The trailer finishes with the mood of hopefulness.
There is a light at the end of the tunnel when the track team raises enough money to buy Jessica a
running leg. The motivational music at the end shows that although the process of learning how to
run this way was long and difficult, she kept trying and believed she could.
Two themes: Determination and Inspiration are two themes from the book shown in this trailer.
Jessica has a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This crushes Jessica because now she can't walk, let alone run. Throughout the trailer, the music
shows the emotional struggles she is facing, and the depressing pictures show how she is dealing
with the fact that she may never run again. Further on in the story, another conflict occurs. The
supportive track team has the idea to raise money to help Jessica run again by buying her a running
leg. Their intentions are good, but $20,000 is a lot to raise. They hold various of fundraisers, but still
come up short. Miraculously, a generous sponsor pledges to double however much money the team
makes, resulting in reaching their goal. When Jessica gets her new running leg, a new conflict
arises. She has learned to run with her new leg, but she decides to tackle the task of pushing Rosa in
a wheelchair through a ten–mile marathon. She wants to do this to prove that she can run just like
everyone else, and also to help Rosa experience the thrill of running for the first

Running Dream Symbolism
A symbol represented in "The Running Dream" is Jessica's prosthetic leg. Jessica's prosthetic leg is
the symbol in the book because she never gave up. The leg represented perseverance, hope, and
kindness. Her prosthetic leg represented perseverance because she never gave up when she had to
lose her leg and get a fake one. She persevered on the track of the marathon and kept going no
matter how much she wanted to faint or stop, her leg helped her stay strong and run on. "And my
stump––it's hot. Wet. Angry. Run strong, run strong, run strong... But I'm living step to step... Step
by step by step by step," (Draanen, pg 330–331). This is showing Jessica persevere on with her
prosthetic leg because she wants to quit, but she won't because she knows

Personal Narrative: Running Out Of Middle School
"Jovanie, I'm going to have to let you go," my coach said to me in a nonchalant voice. My stomach
started twisting in a million knots and I felt my eyes watering, but I was not going to let them fall...
yet. "Not here, not now" I reassured myself. I slowly walked off the bus trying to act unbothered,
but I was. Everybody that knew me understood what track was to me. However, starting off in a
different school as a freshman, where nobody knew me was hard. I had to prove to them that I was a
good runner, but I have failed. Since kindergarten, I grew up watching my older siblings play sports
and track has always caught my interest. I was fast runner and everybody knew it and I just couldn't
wait until I could do track in middle school. During middle school, I got even faster, I was at my ...

I tried not to let that bother me and used it as motivation to get where the upperclassmen were.
However, when it came to the big track meets, I couldn't go because I wasn't fast enough. I wasn't
on the varsity team. Of course, it is very common for freshmen to not make varsity, but people had
high expectations for me. That night after the Freshman–Sophomore meet and I was cut off the
team, it hit me hard. I felt like I have failed myself. I went home, ignored my mom's questions about
the meet and went to my room and cried. I questioned even continuing track, but I loved it too much
to quit, so I blamed my coach. I was so angry at him for not seeing my full potential and I felt like
that for months. I could not face the friends I made on the team the next day. I could not tell people
that I was cut off from the team because that was just embarrassing. It hurt just talking about track
and even watching it on TV. I was heartbroken. It felt like track just broke up with

Track And Field Research Paper
Track and Field is an ancient Olympic sport that began in 776 B.C. This sport is one of the most
famous Olympic sports in history. There are many areas to focus on such as, the ancient olympic
game versus the modern olympic game, as well as the various track and field events whiting the
sport. From track events, to field events, there are 14 events in total. Considering track and field as a
sport that requires the use of energy and technique, there are many elements to acknowledge while
participating in the events.
Track and Field is an ancient Olympic game that began in 776 B.C. In the 5th century, additional
track and field games were added and every four years, these games were held in Olympia, Greece,
this continued for twelve centuries. Although, the first ever Track and Field game was held in
Olympia in 776 B.C., the first modern Olympic game was held in Athens, Greece, in 1896. The
sport only had foot races which were, Stadion, Diaulos, and Dolichos. The sport also had a

Norm: The Insane Activities That Changed My Life
During, 2nd period an insane idea came to my head while we had morning announcements. Mrs.
Pingree was advertising a program called TRM. Running was a hobby for many people and I
wouldn't think to make it an activity that I would do. In 7th grade, I remember running in PE every
Tuesday despising and abhorring every moment, each and every second. It all happened so quickly.
I was just positive that I would quit within the first month at minimum. That same evening I went
Ms. Pingree's classroom to join the program. I was more ecstatic than I should have been. I still
have no idea why. It was 26 week commitment. It meant that I needed to come to every practice
every week. Practices were on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and on Saturday mornings. It was
miraculous that some people could make it to all of those practices every one of those 26 weeks, I ...

It taught me so many things. It taught me not to procrastinate and to be on top of my schedule. My
routine would be psychotic if I didn't get to a practice. It was my priority to make it to each and
every run. The long runs on Saturday mornings were especially important to get to because if we
couldn't make it to a practice then it was almost conclusive that we wouldn't make it up at home.
Well, when we didn't make up the run we also had trouble running the upcoming runs. But, more
than that TRM helped me accomplish something I couldn't have imagined. At Prescott, we have this
PE system called the Colored Trunks. Every student at Prescott starts out with the white trunks and
most of the population leaves in their white trunks as well. I however, thanks to TRM managed to
earn my red trunks. I was determined to earn my red trunks as soon as I entered Prescott as a 7th
grader. But, eventually, I lost the hope that I would get them. Still, I remember the day that I earned
them. It was a day full of recognition and happiness because I wore my red trunks all day through

Summary Of The Book 'The Running Dream'
"I am a runner. That's what I do. That's who I am. Running is all I know, or want, or care about."
(Page 6) What would happen if one morning you woke up and couldn't do what you loved most in
the world? The book The Running Dream is about when track star Jessica loses her leg in a school
bus accident, she is devastated that she will never run again. Jessica was being her normal self,
running in the morning being the best on the track when her life was impacted forever. She was
riding home on a school bus from her track competition and a car loses control. The car smashes
into the bus and of course, Jessica gets injured. "My hopes, my dreams, my life... it's over" (Page 3),
even with doubts she wants to get back on her feet. Jessica realizes she can do everything the same
way she did before the accident but with more difficulties. Jessica takes herself off painkillers,
learns to walk with crutches and goes back to school with the help of her supportive best friend,
Fiona. This is a big deal and it shows how brave jessica is, because she thought she wouldn't be able
to do anything the same. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Personal Narrative: A Personal Experience In Sports Medicine
"You need to take time off."
Exactly what I dreaded to hear in the office of my sports medicine doctor during my junior year's
cross country season. I'd already taken two self–prescribed weeks off due to pain in my calf that
made it difficult to walk, let alone run. When I went into the office, I hoped that the time I had
already taken off was enough and I could start running as soon as possible. But when the doctor
spoke those six little words, those hopes were shattered. What came after was three more long
weeks of time off, watching all of my teammate running while I sat on the sidelines, and four weeks
of physical therapy, where I endured the most excruciating "massages" of my life. During this time,
I felt pretty dejected, however I knew that it would be best in the long run. I made sure that I went to
practice everyday and strengthened my body in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

beat my Personal Record but I knew that after so much time off I might not be ready to run that fast

secure our spots in the State Meet. I felt relieved and my leg felt fantastic; I didn't have a care in the
world but after the first mile of the race, I noticed my lungs couldn't keep up with me. I slowed
down, trying to fill my lungs with air, when I realized I wasn't upset that I had slowed down at all. I
was so unbelievably overjoyed to be running again, that my time at the finish no longer mattered. I
let my other teammates pass me, excited that they were doing so well, and ran at a comfortable
pace, smiling and happy to be running and injury free once again. I ended up finishing the race

Father Running Research Paper
My dad runs. He is not very good, but each day after work he runs. He started by running for ten
minutes at a time. Each day, he would add one minute to his routine. Today, he is able to run for
twenty–eight minutes at a stretch.
Since the beginning of time, humans have been running. As a species, we literally ran to survive. We
would outrun our prey until they overheated and collapsed. This is called persistence hunting, and it
is still used. In a 2006 report in the journal of Current Anthropology, modern day hunter–gatherers,
including the Bushmen in Africa, were found to use this technique.
Our bodies evolved to be able to run exceptionally long distances at a reasonable speed. In an article
published by the New York Times, Dr. Lieberman said, "There are so many features in our bodies
from our heads to our toes that make us good at running." For example, our short toes are designed
for a more efficient push off. There are certain ligaments and tendons in our feet and legs that are
crucial to running. Our relatives the apes and chimpanzees don't have them. We also have a narrow
waist that allows us to swing our arms so we ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One way it does that is by releasing endorphins into your brain that are associated with mood
changes, especially good mood changes. This is commonly referred to as "runner's high." Another
way running can help boost confidence is by the practice of goal setting. Setting and achieving goals
is an excellent way to increase confidence and a feeling of empowerment. Because of this, running
can be used to treat depression. One study involved eighty adults aged between 20 and 45 years who
were diagnosed with mild to moderate depression. Researchers looked at exercise alone to treat the
condition and found that, after 12 weeks, the symptoms were cut almost in half in the individuals
who engaged in 30–minute aerobic exercise sessions three to five times a

Running: An Integral Part of American Culture Essay example
Running: An Integral Part of American Culture
The running phenomenon has blended into society in many different aspects of our lives. This does
not only include track and field, but also cross country, road–racing, and jogging for health and
leisure. Many Americans make running an essential part of their day. Running is not only good for
your heart and lungs, but it is very beneficial for relieving stress, keeping your metabolism high, and
keeping you trim and muscular. Another expanding characteristic of running is using it as a social
experience. It is a part of people's routine to meet with friends and to catch up with one another.
Track is a sport that is shadowed by the likes of football and basketball, but is ... Show more content

It can be a medium in which one may see many friends or acquaintances on the running trails.
There is also the competitive aspect of running. It is arguably one of the oldest sports alive, and a
good race is always entertaining for most spectators. Competitive running exists on all levels. Young
children can compete in age–group competitions up to the national level. High School State
Championships are held throughout the country, with states like Texas and California attracting as
many as 30,000 fans. A good high school prospect can earn a college scholarship (as I have) through
running. The college scene has three different seasons (cross country, indoor track, and outdoor
track).
Competing at the collegiate level in every sport is a big adjustment for athletes. Coming from a
background in high school, some athletes may have also participated in club teams. Some states
have more stringent rules than others, but many athletes may even compete in world–wide
competitions. This allows for an easier transition into college competition. It is a great experience
for an athlete to be able to compete in the collegiate level, but it also entails many responsibilities as
well. Athletes are rewarded with scholarships, which in turn is the salary that they are given for their
extensive hours of training, traveling and competing.
If a runner is at a top level, he/she can take

College Admissions Essay: The Right Path In Life
The Right Path in Life Sports have always been a passion of mine since I was young. I have always
been fascinated by all kinds of different athletes and have always wanted to be one as well. In 7th
grade I had the opportunity to engage in a sport which was soccer. The experience was amazing and
it made me realize I wanted to do more. Next year when I was in the 8th grade I wanted to do more
than just soccer. I was never good at basketball or baseball, so those were out of my possibilities. All
that was left then was track and field. I had never been a fan of just running, so I was unsure of the
chances of me wanting to do this sport, but I was determined to try it. Later on in the year when
track and field was coming closer day by day I found out a shocking piece of information. Track
was not all about running, there was also a field part of it where you throw items such as shot put
and discus. I didn't know what event I should choose than; running or throwing. All my friends were

Ancient Greece Influence On Modern Society
Some of the greatest aspects of modern society came from Ancient Greece. The people of Ancient
Greece were very creative, and they designed their own buildings and theatres. They were smart
because they established the foundations for mathematics and philosophy. Ancient Greece
influenced sports and the Olympic games the modern world has today in many ways. Ancient
Greece influences in the areas of philosophy, mathematics, art, architecture, sports, and government
had a profound impact on modern day culture and society.
The people of Ancient Greece laid the foundations for mathematics and philosophy. Greek
philosophers, full of knowledge and wisdom, believed that ordinary humans could understand the
workings of nature. Ancient Greece became known for many great philosophers. Thales, who lived
in a time when Greek mythology was popular, became known as the first philosopher and the first to
consider that there might be natural explanations to the world Pythagoras, a mathematician and
philosopher, gained notoriety for developing the Pythagorean Theorem. The Pythagorean Theorem,
a well known theorem in geometry classes in the modern world today, states that the square of the
hypotenuse of a right triangle equals the sum of the squares on the other sides . Aristotle, one of the
most influential Greek philosophers known today, created the idea of the food chain. In this food
chain, humans started at the top and animals such as sharks, birds, dogs, insects, and worms

Tegla Loroupe's Success

Could you imagine a tiny woman, 5'1'' and 88 pounds, holding the women's world record for 20000
meters, 25000 meters, 30000 meters, and 26.2 miles? Even though this woman, Tegla Loroupe, does
not still hold world record for the marathon, she will always be remembered for her outstanding
accomplishments. As a child, she had 24 siblings and her dad had 4 wives. Her talent was first
noticed in school races, however her dad banned her from running because it was not ladylike. This
did not stop Tegla, and she continued running. Initially, the Kenyan athletics federation were not too
impressed with her because she was considered too frail. However, after winning a prestigious cross
country race in 1988, this changed. She continued winning more and more races including in 1994,

Summary Of Grit: The Power Of Passion And Perseverance
Near the end of August, I tuned in to watch the last event of the Summer Olympics: the marathon.
The mere strength and endurance required for this final event left me with nothing but respect and
awe for the competing athletes. As a runner myself, I knew that distance running was not only a
physical challenge, but a mental challenge as well. What were they thinking as they ran? What kept
them from giving up and stopping? All of the runners certainly had the perseverance to be
considered gritty as Angela Duckworth, author of Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance,
might point out, but the reason behind their persistence is something of a mystery. Or so it seems.
While Duckworth proclaims that optimistic people tend to persevere more, she ... Show more

"I will start running", for instance, is not a well developed goal. Professor Chang from the National
Changhua University conducted an experiment testing the impact of specific and nonspecific goals.
Elementary students were split into two groups: in one group, the teacher gave students nonspecific
goals like "do your best" and "try hard", and in the second group, the teacher gave each student a
specific number of questions to get correct on a test. When both groups took a vocabulary post–test,
students who were given a specific goal scored on average twenty–four points higher than students
who were given nonspecific goals (Chang 61). To revise the first statement I wrote earlier, "I will
run two miles a day" is a more specific and tangible goal that a rookie runner can take to
approaching and persevering in their goal. As a note, people who feel they aren't as motivated as
others shouldn't fear goal setting. In fact, two researchers conducted an experiment that created
randomized groups with both high and low achieving students. The results concluded that "low need
achievers who received externally imposed goals performed more poorly on the task than did low
need achievers with self–set goals or high need achievers with imposed goals" (Horn and Murphy
275). With the research done by Horn and Murphy, it becomes evident that the goals people
persevere through are usually more effective when they are self–imposed. Why?

Stubborn is how my Mom would describe my personality. My Dad, on the other hand, always said I
was tenacious. He believed our greatest strength can be found by understanding our weaknesses. As
a child, he explained that being stubborn is a negative attribute. According to him, people do not like
when they meet an inflexible brick wall. Tenacity, on the other hand, can be a powerful tool. It
shows people you are determined and persistent. He wanted me to understand that a strength can
sometimes be a weakness made to work in our favor. I have always remembered this advice and

At the beginning of 2013, I had never successfully run a mile. In school, I was the kid that frustrated

Religion In Euripides Bacchant
Euripides' Bacchants, is a play about the god Dionysus wanting to diffuse his religion all throughout
Greece, especially to those who doubted that he was the son of Zeus. His religion consists of both
male and female followers performing dances and chants, while drinking wine, and sacrificing an
animal. During the play there is constant mockery and disapproval of the way Dionysus' religion
was looked at by the people of Thebes, compared to ancient Greece's morals and what the people
thought was right and valuable in their beliefs. Ancient Greece had a mix of two different cultures,
the Mycenaean and Minoan. The Minoans would worship a "fertility mother–goddess," (Morford,
45). While the Mycenaean believed in a sky god named Zeus. Both of these different cultures and
their beliefs fused together to influence Greek mythology and a majority of what ancient Greeks
believed in. People in Greece gained influence from Asian ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

In the play Bacchants, there was a lack of worshipping to Dionysus since people did not believe that
he was a god. Resembling to ancient Greece's beliefs, those who did not believe in Dionysus were
running a risk. Dionysus states in the beginning of the play, "This city must learn, whether it likes it
or not, that it still wants initiation into my Bacchic rites. The cause of my mother Semele I must
defend by proving to mortals that I am a god, borne by her to Zeus," (Euripides, 784). Dionysus
continues the passage by stating that the grandson of Cadmus, Pentheus opposes to worship him,
therefore Dionysus was going to expose himself to Pentheus and prove him wrong. This connects to
the belief that if one does not pray to a god in ancient Greece, then they would be running the risk of
having something bad happen to them. In the end, since Pentheus still did not want to recognize
Dionysus as a god, he was killed by his mother while she was performing the Bacchic

1600 Meter Race Research Paper
I've been running the 1600 meter race since 6th grade. It is four 400 meter laps and a little less than
a mile (there's 1609.34 meters in a mile). Throughout high school it's been my favorite track event.
Looking back on my high school experience so far, I realize how similar it has been to the 1600
meter.
Freshman year was fast. I thought I was ready and had all the experience needed from elementary
and middle with the addition of "high school based" movies (which are all lies). I was wrong. I took
my first AP class, and I failed the test. An hour before my first cross country race my coach asked if
I wanted to step up from JV and run on varsity, because my teammate was injured. I was too scared
to say no. I lost some friends from middle school, but gained new friends. The first lap of the 1600
is always fast and sets the tone for the rest of the race.
Sophomore year I found my pace more or less. There were some high and low points throughout the
year. This was the time when running truly became a big part of my life. I lost a teammate who

Perfect Mile Quotes
In the novel The Perfect Mile, three men each set out on their own journey of breaking four minutes
running a. A quote that captures the theme of the novel is "Further, the four–minute mile had to be
won alone. There could be no teammates to blame, no coach during halftime to inspire a comeback.
One might hide behind the excuses of cold weather, an unkind wind, a slow track or jostling
competition, but ultimately these obstacles had to be defied. Winning a foot race, particularly one
waged against the clock, was ultimately a battle with oneself, over oneself." (2) The three men, John
Landy, Roger Bannister and Wes Santee put it to the test. They overcame mental and physical
challenges, defeated criticism and were determined to break the barrier. ... Show more content on

While at the Olympic finals in Helsinki one of the runners, Roger Bannister described the criticism
he faced. One piece of criticism Bannister faced was the announcer at the Olympic finals said
"Bannister is fading!"(55) during his race, which ultimately led to frustration and defeat by
Bannister. Another way they faced criticism was by the numerous news reports in the papers
denouncing the runners failures. It was not often that the runners were defeated, but when they did
experience it, they were unsure what to do. The feeling of defeat was agony and as it is compared in
the book "it was like the loss of a first love: his heart literally ached." (47) Additionally the criticism
the runners face included opinions of the announcers at the races saying things such as "He is not
running as well as one would hope. He is looking rather tired."(55) This type of criticism really got
to the athletes mentally, especially hearing it during their races. The runners were putting everything
they had into each race, but continued to be

Personal Narrative: The Sport Of Running
Something I have always found interesting since a young age was the sport of running. Just the
thought about how we had the ability to run, then using that skill and racing others with that same
skill, it just amazed me. Then through elementary school they had field day when they had the 100
yard sprint and mini PVC pipe hurdles, it got me really interested in racing others. I was naturally
competitive and really wanted to be the fastest girl out there. So when I came into high school, when
track season came around I joined the track team. When I came to learn the ways of track I found
that wind plays a significant part of running. But why so much?
I found out that when you are running with or against wind it greats this friction like resistance
against you. Not only this but the more surface area you had the more it could work with or against
you, and a lot more than you think. When you are running with the wind against your back it is the
tailwind and it gives you more of a push and it really helps you with your race. Then having the
wind to the front known as the headwind, it can really slow down you race and not get the time that
you want. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

gauging of wind speeds. We can now gauge the wind speed then transfer it into meters per second. A
positive reading would be the tailwind or the wind helping an athlete. A negative reading is the
athlete running against the wind. When the wind speed exceeds 2.0 meters per second wind speed it
is considered illegal wind and they cannot use it for personal records or to qualify for anything
further. This makes it fair to other athletes that someone is not reaching a really fast time only

Thump thump. Thump thump. Thump thump. My heart beats like a jackhammer in my chest.
Thundering cheering echos from the sidelines, barely audible in my own ears over the rythmic
sound of my feet scraping on the track, my steady breathing, and the blurred white noise. As the
finish line lies just a short one hundred meters away, I pump my arms harder and focus on gaining

The level of intensity is much lower if you're standing on the sidelines rather than taking part in the
events on the inside of the fence. Onlookers from the sidelines aren't concerned with performing in
the events, but instead are there to motivate those that are competing. Vice versa, the competing
athletes are on a higher level of intensity, physically preparing themselves for their events with
warm–up routines and mentally preparing themselves for facing athletes from the other teams.
Oberving tends to be a layed back role in the track meets compared to participating in the meet's
events. Though it may sound insignificant, the food consumed by an athelete can mean all the
difference in their performance. Often times, athletes can be seen at the meets eating lite, healthy
snacks, while in contrast, the spectators return from concessions with junk food and full, heavy
meals. Watching my teammates run their events, I'm around everyone else cheering, and not only
yelling as well, but taking in the scene before me. I'm alert to my surroundings. On the contrary,
when I run, it's as if I'm in my own world. I'm focused on myself running, and only myself. Most of
the noise I naturally tune out, and some noise gets lost over the sound of my steps and my breathing.

Ancient Greece: The Peloponnesian War
The Greek civilization was a great paradox, meaning that they had very bad failures but they also
had great success. The Greeks were very divided, what I mean by that is that the Greek citizens
were only loyal to their own poleis. These people would show no loyalty to Greece which lead to no
political sense. Many people of Greece started to kill each other due to the conflict between each of
the poleis. The Peloponnesian War was a war between the two city–states, Sparta and Athens. Sparta
and Athens may have been two big parts of Greece but they did not get along, this lead to them
fighting for years and years over small differences. Which brings me to my next point, Greece was
highly militarized. What I mean by that is that they will solve everything ... Show more content on

The Greeks were not very rational thinkers, they would go into these wars with Sparta that lasted
from 431 BC all the way to 404 BC, none of these wars had actual reasoning behind such crazy
behavior. The Persians would take advantage of this by paying the citizens of the rival cities of
Greece to go and kill each other so that they could peacefully become a bigger empire with no
interruptions from the Greeks. Ancient Greece was in such a vicious cycle of violence that they
thought the only way anything could be solved is to escalate a small issue and physically fight and
kill over it. The Greeks on ancient Greece were very ethnocentric, what I mean by that is that they
always thought their culture was the best. This caused them to not mesh well with any other

Reflection On The Crucible
Everyone has had a crucible or "serve trial" that they have been through which has forced them to
change, look at things differently, or toughened up their mettle once or maybe more than one time in
their lifetime. My crucible has made me look at things differently ,and toughened up my mettle. My
crucible taught me to keep going, to not give up, and has strengthened my mentality. My crucible
happens to be running. Before running I was the same old goofy kid and even after my crucible ,but
my mind ,and my mentality has changed. Some people say running is not that hard or I can do that
easily, but it's not especially if you run for competition. Before running I used to think it shouldn't
be that hard or I can keep up with them, but I was proven wrong once I actually tried it. The
Memorial track coach came to me one day ,and said to me that I would be a really good runner, and
should come and joined the team. He knew me from doing a little track event in the 8th grade, and
he saw I had potential to be a good runner which gave me a little confidence to join the team. The
first practice the coach had the guy's run an easy four mile run, and I tried to join them ,and keep in
mind I think it shouldn't be that hard. But that was the longest and most brutal four miles I ever
experienced in my life. After and during the run I felt like I was going to throw up and thank god I
didn't but it was tuff. My legs felt like they were nearly going to fall of when I got home. I still went

Raramuri Culture Essay
Over sixty–five million people in the United States are runners. Of these runners, only a few can
call themselves ultramarathoners. Any race longer than 26.2 miles is an ultramarathon. Whether
someone is a weekend jogger or a fully committed ultramarathoner, they can learn from the example
of the Raramuri. The Raramuri are a nomadic Native American tribe in the Copper Canyons of
Mexico. Their entire culture revolves solely around running. The natives travel on foot from
Chihuahua, Mexico to the Copper Canyons, a journey of over 600 miles. The name Raramuri
literally means "the light–footed one." The strategies that the Raramuri use to survive develop who
they are, how they stay separate from the world, and how they can run for so long.
The Raramuri culture is extremely different when compared to the cultures of the United States and
Europe. They have different beliefs about simple things like a handshake. The Raramuri do not have
the same access to education as most Americans. The schools that the Raramuri attend do not teach
agriculture. Schools instead place emphasis on math and science. Science and math do not have any
immediate relevance to the life of the Raramuri. Schools teach Spanish, a useful skill for the
Raramuri, but the effect of a foreign language on their culture is negative. (Marshall). The Raramuri
prize their culture and do not want to have their culture changed.

How Did The Olympics Influence Ancient Greek Culture
In 776 B.C a new era began for athletes. The first olympic games were held in Olympia, Greece.
"The ancient games were not only an expression and definition of common cultural values, but also
an arena for intense competition between Greeks." (Gold, silver, and bronze) The olympics were an
important part of Ancient Greece culture because, it brought their civilization together, kept the
greeks fit and ready for war, and the games were used to satisfy their gods. The olympic games were
held every four years and lasted for five days. The first day was for sacrifices and the festivals,
while the judges and competitors took oaths of fair dealing. The next three days were competition
days, men competed in running, jumping, wrestling, horse and chariot, and pankration. The final
day was for sacrifices, and a banquet was held for the winners. The winners received a crown of
wild olive. Days before the Olympics people from all over Greece traveled to Olympia and camped
on the plains. During this time wars were stopped or postponed three months in advance so
everyone could travel to the games safely. The entertainment of the Olympics games brought
Ancient Greek civilization together. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Persuasive Speech
Too tired to keep running, too committed to stop.
This is precisely how I felt after completing the second of three 16.67 miles loops during a 50–mile
ultra–marathon in Tulsa this past 4th of July.
After seven hours and 33 miles, I was soaked to the bone after hours of running in a constant rain,
which began with a full–fledged thunderstorm at midnight. I was hungry and weary from lack of
sleep. My legs were cramping, my energy level had waned, and the proposition of running one more
16 mile loop seemed insurmountable.
I've been in this spot before – in the Marine Corps, in running, and in life. I have learned the key to
beating any significant challenge in life is to just keep going.
When you're tired...
When it hurts too bad...
When you're too far behind...
When it would just be easier to quit...
When others are telling you to just give up...
You just have to push through it. And what I've learned when I do this is that often–not always but
often – the best experiences are right on the other side of this decision.
Legendary ultra–marathoner, Gary Cantrell, the creator of "The Barkley," a 100–mile trail ultra–
marathon held in the mountains of Tennessee (a course so difficult that only 15 runners out of about
1000 since 1986 have finished within the 60 hour cutoff), once said:
"It never always gets worse."
What I believe Cantrell means is that at our absolute depths of despair or at the peak of frustration
all we see is that negativity extrapolated forward.

I had been running for nearly two hours with fifty thousand others by my side. Finally the end was

part of my life, the quality of food I fueled myself with become more significant and thus, my

Training Methods For The Olympics
The Training Transition Although, there are many differences in the techniques and training
methods that were used to prepare for the Olympics, during the Ancient Greek period and now,
research has shown that there are still some similarities and systems that are still practiced today.
The first Olympic Games started in Olympia around 776 B.C.E. but later the Games were
discontinued by the emperor Theodosius, in 393 A.D. The Olympics have quickly gain back
popularity after resuming in 1896 in Athens, Greece, and has been a very anticipated event
occurring every four years (Ancient Olympics: History). This has allowed athletes to have the
opportunity to look forward and prepare for one of the most important sport competitions in history,
as many others have done hundreds of years ago. When getting ready for the Olympic Games,
training methods such as, athletic, weight, and mental training are used to prepare athletes for better
performance, as they were in ancient times. Athletes practice these training methods to help them
achieve greater ability when participating in their sporting events, in hoping to ultimately win a
medal. To begin with, the Olympics started with running races, called stadions, being the first sport
for athletes to participate in the ancient times. The runners had to run the length of the stadium (192
m), which was referred to as 1 stade). There were also 2 stade races, and for long distance it could
be up to 24 stades (Ancient Olympic Events). In

Greek And The Modern Culture Of The Ancient Greek Culture
There are a couple of ways in which a given cultural period has influenced the modern world. In my
opinion if you look at today compared to the Ancient Greece time period looking back about 2500
years ago a lot of things they have created and started evolved into great things for an example.
Sports and the Olympics, Architecture, and even the Greek arts. I personally feel like these subjects
hit home when we are talking about influential changes from the past to todays culture. You actually
might just be as surprised finding out some of this information just like me. You might be surprised
but although looking back about 2500 years ago they also played sports just like we do to this day.
As a matter of fact the Ancient Greeks were the inventors of the Olympics believe it or not the
Olympics has been around for that long. Although it was a little different back then. "The ancient
Olympic Games were initially a one–day event until 684 BC, when they were extended to three
days. In the 5th century B.C., the Games were extended again to cover five days. The ancient
Games included running, long jump, shot put, javelin, boxing, pankration and equestrian events."
(Olympic.org). "They even often performed nude to demonstrate the performance of the human
body." (mindmeister.com) . The running contest included the Stade race (200m foot race) , The
Diaulos (two stades 400m foot race) , Dolichos ( ranging between 7and 24 stades). The next event
was the jumping "Athletes used stone or lead weights called halteres to increase the distance of a
jump. They held onto the weights until the end of their flight, and then jettisoned them backwards."
(Olympic.org). There's also boxing and wrestling which is still like modern days boxing and
wrestling. But with the both were way more brutal boxers back then would sometimes even
disfigure there own opponents. Wrestling matches would not stop until there opponent admitting
call for defeat. As you can tell our modern day Olympics have grew but the start has come from the
ancient Greek. Who would have know ? That a couple of games would turn into something as big as
the Olympics that today brings the best from all around the world to participate in these following

My Personal Strengths
Personal strengths are abilities, talents, and characteristics that God has given us. Psalm 139:14
says, "I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know

them as. Even though most people don't like talking about their own positive characteristics, we all
have amazing gifts and talents. When I was talking to my friends, they gave me three characteristics
that they see in me. The abilities that God has blessed me with are, a strong athlete, a good friend,
and servant–hearted. I have thought about what these mean to me and I am going to describe each of
them. To begin, most people say that I am a strong athlete. I love to run and do gymnastics. I have
been doing gymnastics for a very long time. Even though I am not competing this season, I am
working hard to get my level 8 skills. One of these skills is a roundoff–backhandspring–full. Also,
without a doubt, I love to run. I have been trying to run almost every day to keep up my speed. I am
only good at long distance running, but I love to run any distance. Even though most people say
running is tiring and not very fun, I enjoy it a lot. I will finally get to run cross country this year,
which I am very excited about! I even have been practicing soccer to see if I like it. Some of my
athletic interests are gymnastics, soccer, and running. Additionally, I have often been described as a

China's government was and empire, and here the emperor, "The Son of God," delegated leaders

which none were women, who represented 0.2% of the population (Doc 7, 3). Much different from
the centralized government of China, Ancient Greece's form of government was a democracy in
which they governed themselves. It was said that no man could govern long enough to benefit
themselves, but that was possible for the generals of the armed forces who could be elected any

There is a saying that goes, "Every journey begins with a single step"– Maya Angelou. Similarly,
that is how I started as a runner. Many people form part of this group or subculture, because is more
than just a sport. Runners typically say that running is who they are and the sport has changed their
lives. Although running for some may be just a way to stay fit. Conversely, running for some has
become more than that, a life style that brings healthy and psychological favor. A runner's primary

There are countless reasons why runners run. But what every runner has in common is that they
always run to achieve an objective. This is what makes this group so special; eventually running
becomes part of their life and part of who they are. The best part about it is that anyone can form
part of this subculture.
Social running is an enjoyable experience. Making friends while exercising is another way runners
use to keep on training. There are many activities some runners like to involve such as running for
marathons or running for charities. On the other hand there are solo runners, who enjoy the
peacefully of running alone to find time for themselves. Also solo running can be a great way to
release stress, and achieve goals all by yourself. Many people have other reasons why they run.
However, running for weight loss is the most common one. Running has been scientifically proven
to extremely burn large amounts of calories. Along with other health benefits for example it reduces
stress, and boost metabolism. Also other studies have shown that people who exercises regularly are

Reflection On Track And Field
On April 4, 2017 I started my first Track and Field season at Mosinee Middle School and learned a
very valuable lesson, but let's not get ahead of ourselves we have to start from the beginning.
Probably sometime in February I was in 7th grade Social Studies and I heard on the announcements
that there were Track and Field sign ups coming up. Mr. Rheinshmidt, our vice principal, stated on
the loudspeakers, " There will be Track Sign ups in the creske gym lobby this Thursday." I thought
to myself... what would I be good at in Track?... shotput?... Discus? I was brought back from deep
thought as my Social Studies teacher started talking after the announcements were done. As soon as
I heard this, I knew that I would be in Track that spring. That day at lunch I asked my friends
whether or not any of them were interested in joining Track and Field that season... but none of
them were which made me lonely and wistful. I begged and begged them to join but they kept
saying no. " Please join Track. I'll be so lonely if you don't," I told them beggingly. "No, we said we
didn't want to," they stated sternly. I didn't let this stop me though I pestered them until one of them
finally said that they would join. Because of this I was ecstatic that I would not feel lonely. Even
though I ended up making even more friends in Track than just hanging out with the friend I
pestered to join. The next day, was Track and Field sign ups in the lobby of the creske gym. For sign
ups we had to put our First

I lost a teammate who
could always make me laugh. I was asked to homecoming for the first time, that was definitely an
experience. I got to watch history take place, knowing I had a part in it even if I never get
recognition. In the 1600m I may pass people, or get passed, but i'm where I ... Show more content

I always felt some sort of pressure. Whether it was leading my team during cross country or
realizing how close college was or a big test in math or history was always looming. Getting injured
on the second day of track, not fun. All the bad didn't outweigh the good, there was just more stress
than other years. In the end it made me stronger. Anyone who has run a 1600m knows the third lap
is the hardest and everyone slows down, the key is to slow down less than the others. This lap is
when your legs get tired, lungs start to burn and want to quit, but this lap makes you stronger for the

Mood Changes In The Trailer

  • 1. Mood Changes In The Trailer Mood: The mood portrayed in this trailer changes throughout. In the beginning, it is suspenseful because of the upbeat music and the few amount of words. It pulls you in making you wonder what will happen next and if Jessica will be okay. Then the mood changes to depressed. Jessica starts to worry if her life will ever be the same or if she will ever run again. The sad music creates a gloomy atmosphere and the pictures show her struggle. The trailer finishes with the mood of hopefulness. There is a light at the end of the tunnel when the track team raises enough money to buy Jessica a running leg. The motivational music at the end shows that although the process of learning how to run this way was long and difficult, she kept trying and believed she could. Two themes: Determination and Inspiration are two themes from the book shown in this trailer. Jessica has a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This crushes Jessica because now she can't walk, let alone run. Throughout the trailer, the music shows the emotional struggles she is facing, and the depressing pictures show how she is dealing with the fact that she may never run again. Further on in the story, another conflict occurs. The supportive track team has the idea to raise money to help Jessica run again by buying her a running leg. Their intentions are good, but $20,000 is a lot to raise. They hold various of fundraisers, but still come up short. Miraculously, a generous sponsor pledges to double however much money the team makes, resulting in reaching their goal. When Jessica gets her new running leg, a new conflict arises. She has learned to run with her new leg, but she decides to tackle the task of pushing Rosa in a wheelchair through a ten–mile marathon. She wants to do this to prove that she can run just like everyone else, and also to help Rosa experience the thrill of running for the first ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Running Dream Symbolism A symbol represented in "The Running Dream" is Jessica's prosthetic leg. Jessica's prosthetic leg is the symbol in the book because she never gave up. The leg represented perseverance, hope, and kindness. Her prosthetic leg represented perseverance because she never gave up when she had to lose her leg and get a fake one. She persevered on the track of the marathon and kept going no matter how much she wanted to faint or stop, her leg helped her stay strong and run on. "And my stump––it's hot. Wet. Angry. Run strong, run strong, run strong... But I'm living step to step... Step by step by step by step," (Draanen, pg 330–331). • 3. Personal Narrative: Running Out Of Middle School "Jovanie, I'm going to have to let you go," my coach said to me in a nonchalant voice. My stomach started twisting in a million knots and I felt my eyes watering, but I was not going to let them fall... yet. "Not here, not now" I reassured myself. I slowly walked off the bus trying to act unbothered, but I was. Everybody that knew me understood what track was to me. However, starting off in a different school as a freshman, where nobody knew me was hard. I had to prove to them that I was a good runner, but I have failed. Since kindergarten, I grew up watching my older siblings play sports and track has always caught my interest. I was fast runner and everybody knew it and I just couldn't wait until I could do track in middle school. During middle school, I got even faster, I was at my ... I tried not to let that bother me and used it as motivation to get where the upperclassmen were. However, when it came to the big track meets, I couldn't go because I wasn't fast enough. I wasn't on the varsity team. Of course, it is very common for freshmen to not make varsity, but people had high expectations for me. That night after the Freshman–Sophomore meet and I was cut off the team, it hit me hard. I felt like I have failed myself. I went home, ignored my mom's questions about the meet and went to my room and cried. I questioned even continuing track, but I loved it too much to quit, so I blamed my coach. I was so angry at him for not seeing my full potential and I felt like that for months. I could not face the friends I made on the team the next day. I could not tell people that I was cut off from the team because that was just embarrassing. It hurt just talking about track and even watching it on TV. I was heartbroken. • 5. Norm: The Insane Activities That Changed My Life During, 2nd period an insane idea came to my head while we had morning announcements. Mrs. Pingree was advertising a program called TRM. Running was a hobby for many people and I wouldn't think to make it an activity that I would do. In 7th grade, I remember running in PE every Tuesday despising and abhorring every moment, each and every second. It all happened so quickly. I was just positive that I would quit within the first month at minimum. That same evening I went Ms. Pingree's classroom to join the program. I was more ecstatic than I should have been. I still have no idea why. It was 26 week commitment. It meant that I needed to come to every practice every week. Practices were on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and on Saturday mornings. It was miraculous that some people could make it to all of those practices every one of those 26 weeks, I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It taught me so many things. It taught me not to procrastinate and to be on top of my schedule. My routine would be psychotic if I didn't get to a practice. It was my priority to make it to each and every run. The long runs on Saturday mornings were especially important to get to because if we couldn't make it to a practice then it was almost conclusive that we wouldn't make it up at home. Well, when we didn't make up the run we also had trouble running the upcoming runs. But, more than that TRM helped me accomplish something I couldn't have imagined. At Prescott, we have this PE system called the Colored Trunks. Every student at Prescott starts out with the white trunks and most of the population leaves in their white trunks as well. I however, thanks to TRM managed to earn my red trunks. I was determined to earn my red trunks as soon as I entered Prescott as a 7th grader. But, eventually, I lost the hope that I would get them. Still, I remember the day that I earned them. It was a day full of recognition and happiness because I wore my red trunks all day through ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Summary Of The Book 'The Running Dream' "I am a runner. That's what I do. That's who I am. Running is all I know, or want, or care about." (Page 6) What would happen if one morning you woke up and couldn't do what you loved most in the world? The book The Running Dream is about when track star Jessica loses her leg in a school bus accident, she is devastated that she will never run again. Jessica was being her normal self, running in the morning being the best on the track when her life was impacted forever. She was riding home on a school bus from her track competition and a car loses control. The car smashes into the bus and of course, Jessica gets injured. "My hopes, my dreams, my life... it's over" (Page 3), even with doubts she wants to get back on her feet. • 7. Personal Narrative: A Personal Experience In Sports Medicine "You need to take time off." Exactly what I dreaded to hear in the office of my sports medicine doctor during my junior year's cross country season. I'd already taken two self–prescribed weeks off due to pain in my calf that made it difficult to walk, let alone run. When I went into the office, I hoped that the time I had already taken off was enough and I could start running as soon as possible. But when the doctor spoke those six little words, those hopes were shattered. What came after was three more long weeks of time off, watching all of my teammate running while I sat on the sidelines, and four weeks of physical therapy, where I endured the most excruciating "massages" of my life. During this time, I felt pretty dejected, however I knew that it would be best in the long run. I made sure that I went to practice everyday and strengthened my body in the ... I felt relieved and my leg felt fantastic; I didn't have a care in the world but after the first mile of the race, I noticed my lungs couldn't keep up with me. I slowed down, trying to fill my lungs with air, when I realized I wasn't upset that I had slowed down at all. I was so unbelievably overjoyed to be running again, that my time at the finish no longer mattered. I let my other teammates pass me, excited that they were doing so well, and ran at a comfortable pace, smiling and happy to be running and injury free once again. Each day, he would add one minute to his routine. Today, he is able to run for twenty–eight minutes at a stretch. Since the beginning of time, humans have been running. As a species, we literally ran to survive. We would outrun our prey until they overheated and collapsed. This is called persistence hunting, and it is still used. In a 2006 report in the journal of Current Anthropology, modern day hunter–gatherers, including the Bushmen in Africa, were found to use this technique. Our bodies evolved to be able to run exceptionally long distances at a reasonable speed. In an article published by the New York Times, Dr. Lieberman said, "There are so many features in our bodies from our heads to our toes that make us good at running." For example, our short toes are designed for a more efficient push off. There are certain ligaments and tendons in our feet and legs that are crucial to running. Running: An Integral Part of American Culture Essay example Running: An Integral Part of American Culture The running phenomenon has blended into society in many different aspects of our lives. This does not only include track and field, but also cross country, road–racing, and jogging for health and leisure. Many Americans make running an essential part of their day. Running is not only good for your heart and lungs, but it is very beneficial for relieving stress, keeping your metabolism high, and keeping you trim and muscular. Young children can compete in age–group competitions up to the national level. High School State Championships are held throughout the country, with states like Texas and California attracting as many as 30,000 fans. A good high school prospect can earn a college scholarship (as I have) through running. The college scene has three different seasons (cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track). Some states have more stringent rules than others, but many athletes may even compete in world–wide competitions. This allows for an easier transition into college competition. It is a great experience for an athlete to be able to compete in the collegiate level, but it also entails many responsibilities as well. Athletes are rewarded with scholarships, which in turn is the salary that they are given for their extensive hours of training, traveling and competing. The mere strength and endurance required for this final event left me with nothing but respect and awe for the competing athletes. As a runner myself, I knew that distance running was not only a physical challenge, but a mental challenge as well. What were they thinking as they ran? What kept them from giving up and stopping? All of the runners certainly had the perseverance to be considered gritty as Angela Duckworth, author of Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance, might point out, but the reason behind their persistence is something of a mystery. "I will start running", for instance, is not a well developed goal. Professor Chang from the National Changhua University conducted an experiment testing the impact of specific and nonspecific goals. Elementary students were split into two groups: in one group, the teacher gave students nonspecific goals like "do your best" and "try hard", and in the second group, the teacher gave each student a specific number of questions to get correct on a test. When both groups took a vocabulary post–test, students who were given a specific goal scored on average twenty–four points higher than students who were given nonspecific goals (Chang 61). To revise the first statement I wrote earlier, "I will run two miles a day" is a more specific and tangible goal that a rookie runner can take to approaching and persevering in their goal. As a note, people who feel they aren't as motivated as others shouldn't fear goal setting. In fact, two researchers conducted an experiment that created randomized groups with both high and low achieving students. The results concluded that "low need achievers who received externally imposed goals performed more poorly on the task than did low need achievers with self–set goals or high need achievers with imposed goals" (Horn and Murphy 275). Religion In Euripides Bacchant Euripides' Bacchants, is a play about the god Dionysus wanting to diffuse his religion all throughout Greece, especially to those who doubted that he was the son of Zeus. His religion consists of both male and female followers performing dances and chants, while drinking wine, and sacrificing an animal. During the play there is constant mockery and disapproval of the way Dionysus' religion was looked at by the people of Thebes, compared to ancient Greece's morals and what the people thought was right and valuable in their beliefs. Ancient Greece had a mix of two different cultures, the Mycenaean and Minoan. The Minoans would worship a "fertility mother–goddess," (Morford, 45). Dionysus continues the passage by stating that the grandson of Cadmus, Pentheus opposes to worship him, therefore Dionysus was going to expose himself to Pentheus and prove him wrong. Any race longer than 26.2 miles is an ultramarathon. Whether someone is a weekend jogger or a fully committed ultramarathoner, they can learn from the example of the Raramuri. The Raramuri are a nomadic Native American tribe in the Copper Canyons of Mexico. Their entire culture revolves solely around running. The natives travel on foot from Chihuahua, Mexico to the Copper Canyons, a journey of over 600 miles. The name Raramuri literally means "the light–footed one." The strategies that the Raramuri use to survive develop who they are, how they stay separate from the world, and how they can run for so long. The Raramuri culture is extremely different when compared to the cultures of the United States and Europe. They have different beliefs about simple things like a handshake. (Gold, silver, and bronze) The olympics were an important part of Ancient Greece culture because, it brought their civilization together, kept the greeks fit and ready for war, and the games were used to satisfy their gods. The olympic games were held every four years and lasted for five days. The first day was for sacrifices and the festivals, while the judges and competitors took oaths of fair dealing. The winners received a crown of wild olive. Days before the Olympics people from all over Greece traveled to Olympia and camped on the plains. • 26. Persuasive Speech Too tired to keep running, too committed to stop. This is precisely how I felt after completing the second of three 16.67 miles loops during a 50–mile ultra–marathon in Tulsa this past 4th of July. After seven hours and 33 miles, I was soaked to the bone after hours of running in a constant rain, which began with a full–fledged thunderstorm at midnight. I was hungry and weary from lack of sleep. My legs were cramping, my energy level had waned, and the proposition of running one more 16 mile loop seemed insurmountable. I've been in this spot before – in the Marine Corps, in running, and in life. I have learned the key to beating any significant challenge in life is to just keep going. When you're tired... When it hurts too bad... When you're too far behind... When it would just be easier to quit... When others are telling you to just give up... You just have to push through it. And what I've learned when I do this is that often–not always but often – the best experiences are right on the other side of this decision. Legendary ultra–marathoner, Gary Cantrell, the creator of "The Barkley," a 100–mile trail ultra– marathon held in the mountains of Tennessee (a course so difficult that only 15 runners out of about 1000 since 1986 have finished within the 60 hour cutoff), once said: "It never always gets worse." What I believe Cantrell means is that at our absolute depths of despair or at the peak of frustration all we see is that negativity extrapolated forward.

With an awkward stride courtesy of legs that felt like lead and embarrassingly heavy breathing, I crossed the finish line of my first half marathon, conquering 13.1 miles, the goal I had set two years prior. Growing up, I was always fascinated by what my body was capable of. Having participated in sports for my entire life, I was constantly pushing myself in measures of strength and stamina, looking to outwork those I competed against. As I got older and running became an integral part of my life, the quality of food I fueled myself with become more significant and thus, my interest in health developed. From there, added knowledge of the world's nutritional circumstance has helped construct my desire to expand improvement of my personal health, to improvement of the world's health. We live in a society where 1 billion people have health problems because they do not get enough to eat and another 2.1 billion face health problems from eating too much. • 30. Training Methods For The Olympics The Training Transition Although, there are many differences in the techniques and training methods that were used to prepare for the Olympics, during the Ancient Greek period and now, research has shown that there are still some similarities and systems that are still practiced today. The first Olympic Games started in Olympia around 776 B.C.E. but later the Games were discontinued by the emperor Theodosius, in 393 A.D. The Olympics have quickly gain back popularity after resuming in 1896 in Athens, Greece, and has been a very anticipated event occurring every four years (Ancient Olympics: History). This has allowed athletes to have the opportunity to look forward and prepare for one of the most important sport competitions in history, as many others have done hundreds of years ago. When getting ready for the Olympic Games, training methods such as, athletic, weight, and mental training are used to prepare athletes for better performance, as they were in ancient times. Athletes practice these training methods to help them achieve greater ability when participating in their sporting events, in hoping to ultimately win a medal. To begin with, the Olympics started with running races, called stadions, being the first sport for athletes to participate in the ancient times. The runners had to run the length of the stadium (192 m), which was referred to as 1 stade). There were also 2 stade races, and for long distance it could be up to 24 stades (Ancient Olympic Events). Just as importantly, I've been able to witness dramatic change within the sport in so many areas. Besides the obvious improvements in training, it seems as if practically everything I knew as a high school freshman, has been either replaced by a positive upgrade or deleted altogether from the running scene. Back in high school while doing workouts on extremely hot days, we were offered salt pills which were designed to replace the salt we were losing in our sweat while working out. Thankfully, it wasn't too many years later that scientific research determined that consuming salt during our workouts, may well have been the absolute worst thing we could ... • 33. Greek And The Modern Culture Of The Ancient Greek Culture There are a couple of ways in which a given cultural period has influenced the modern world. In my opinion if you look at today compared to the Ancient Greece time period looking back about 2500 years ago a lot of things they have created and started evolved into great things for an example. Sports and the Olympics, Architecture, and even the Greek arts. I personally feel like these subjects hit home when we are talking about influential changes from the past to todays culture. You actually might just be as surprised finding out some of this information just like me. You might be surprised but although looking back about 2500 years ago they also played sports just like we do to this day. As a matter of fact the Ancient Greeks were the inventors of the Olympics believe it or not the Olympics has been around for that long. Although it was a little different back then. "The ancient Olympic Games were initially a one–day event until 684 BC, when they were extended to three days. In the 5th century B.C., the Games were extended again to cover five days. The ancient Games included running, long jump, shot put, javelin, boxing, pankration and equestrian events." (Olympic.org). "They even often performed nude to demonstrate the performance of the human body." (mindmeister.com) . The running contest included the Stade race (200m foot race) , The Diaulos (two stades 400m foot race) , Dolichos ( ranging between 7and 24 stades). The next event was the jumping "Athletes used stone or lead weights called halteres to increase the distance of a jump. They held onto the weights until the end of their flight, and then jettisoned them backwards." (Olympic.org). There's also boxing and wrestling which is still like modern days boxing and wrestling. But with the both were way more brutal boxers back then would sometimes even disfigure there own opponents. Wrestling matches would not stop until there opponent admitting call for defeat. As you can tell our modern day Olympics have grew but the start has come from the ancient Greek. Who would have know ? That a couple of games would turn into something as big as the Olympics that today brings the best from all around the world to participate in these following events that ... Psalm 139:14 says, "I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well". Much different from the centralized government of China, Ancient Greece's form of government was a democracy in which they governed themselves. It was said that no man could govern long enough to benefit themselves, but that was possible for the generals of the armed forces who could be elected any number of times. In the democracy there was an Assembly which all free, male, adult citizens could attend and generally talk about anything they would like (Doc 5). A Council was held with 500 men chosen by a list of volunteers, and the council members were the men who chose the official agenda for the Athenian Assembly. These council members were paid for their one year service, and possibly a second if elected again, but there is a two year term limit (Doc 5).The smaller council had a total of 50 men which changed 10 times throughout the year and the smaller ... Reflection On Track And Field On April 4, 2017 I started my first Track and Field season at Mosinee Middle School and learned a very valuable lesson, but let's not get ahead of ourselves we have to start from the beginning. Probably sometime in February I was in 7th grade Social Studies and I heard on the announcements that there were Track and Field sign ups coming up. Mr. Rheinshmidt, our vice principal, stated on the loudspeakers, " There will be Track Sign ups in the creske gym lobby this Thursday." I thought to myself... what would I be good at in Track?... shotput?... Discus? I was brought back from deep thought as my Social Studies teacher started talking after the announcements were done. As soon as I heard this, I knew that I would be in Track that spring. That day at lunch I asked my friends whether or not any of them were interested in joining Track and Field that season... but none of them were which made me lonely and wistful. I begged and begged them to join but they kept saying no. " Please join Track. I'll be so lonely if you don't," I told them beggingly. "No, we said we didn't want to," they stated sternly. I didn't let this stop me though I pestered them until one of them finally said that they would join. Because of this I was ecstatic that I would not feel lonely. Throughout high school it's been my favorite track event. Looking back on my high school experience so far, I realize how similar it has been to the 1600 meter. Freshman year was fast. I thought I was ready and had all the experience needed from elementary and middle with the addition of "high school based" movies (which are all lies). I was wrong. I took my first AP class, and I failed the test. An hour before my first cross country race my coach asked if I wanted to step up from JV and run on varsity, because my teammate was injured. I was too scared to say no. I lost some friends from middle school, but gained new friends. The first lap of the 1600 is always fast and sets the tone for the rest of the race. Sophomore year I found my pace more or less. There were some high and low points throughout the year. This was the time when running truly became a big part of my life. I lost a teammate who could always make me laugh. I was asked to homecoming for the first time, that was definitely an experience.
