Colombia is located in the northwest of South America. The current population is estimated to be in
the region of 46.73 million with the capital city Bogota being the most populated. The labour force
is estimated to be 24.34 million. Colombia's major resources are oil and coal. The country operates
in a representative democracy which attempts to empower the masses. Juan Manuel Santos Calderon
is the president; he is currently serving his last term in office
Colombia is dominated by two political parties, Social National Unity Party and the opposition,
Democratic Center Party led by former president, Alvaro Uribe. In recent times the political
landscape of Colombia has changed, political stability is now the order of the day. The freedom of
expression is evident in policy debates where the opposition has been very critical of the policy of
the current administration. Voter turnout for the last presidential was 47% of the voting population,
this could be due to the high level of poverty in the country. The major political change in recent
history has been the reinstatement of a one term policy limit for the president from 2018 onwards.
This constitutional change makes Colombia less stable country. The change will introduce policy
and regulatory uncertainty which could be detrimental to future growth as future presidents are more
likely to be myopic in their policy decisions.
