The Resilience In The Play
Resilience is the ability to bounce back from adversity or hardship, this idea was express to the
audience by Debra Oswald in Gary's house and podcast through the lives of fictitious characters
based on real Australian People. She chooses themes such as people marginalised in society,
challenging gender roles and the past affecting the present knowing that the audience will relate to
it. By using these ideas with the diverse range of characters, Oswald is able to show how people
need resilience and how important it is to overcome adversity through engagement with characters
and their development throughout the play.

Dave faces the issue of the past affecting the present because of this issue he tries to find a place
where he belongs in the world. Oswald gave Dave a difficult problem and that is feeling the guilt of
the death of a new friend where he had a chance to save him. "But timing matters...it would've been
different" by using this emotive language the audience felt connected to Dave even more and they
would have want to know how he can over come this event. Normally Dave would just give up like
many people would but Gary's death is Dave's agent of change. He in the past would have never
gotten involved in physical labour nor a deep relationship, but after Gary's death he helped build the
house while getting in a deep relationship with Christine, thus showing his ability of resilience.
Oswald didn't want to end her play with Gary's death as expressed in the podcast so she made Gary's
death as a catalyst of change and "hoped that it was the right solution". As the progression of play
the audience was treated to characters transitioning such as Dave from little resilience to strong
amounts of resilience in bouncing back from the passing of Gary and implicating the importance of

Resilience Is An Aspect Of Health
Resilience in People Approaching the End of Their Lives
Introduction
Resilience reflects the ability of someone to maintain a stable equilibrium(1), that is to retain a sense
of identity or self(2), when dealing with adversity or misfortune. Highly resilient individuals are
capable of coping with unexpected challenges, and may have a number of mechanisms or strategies
to help them do so. Resilience is an aspect of health that is becoming increasingly recognised in
medicine(3), as having resilience enables self–care and self–healing, which is beneficial in multiple
ways. By being actively involved in his or her own wellbeing, a patient is likely to have better
outcomes(3). In addition, healthcare resources are conserved, allowing them to be used to help a
patient with less resilience. Although the importance of resilience in carers of the ill cannot be
understated, in this essay I will primarily focus on resilience in patients approaching end of life, as
there is a great deal for them to go through, all the way from diagnosis to death. The concept of
resilience itself is something we are all familiar with in one way or another. I experienced seeing
resilience being tested firsthand from watching my parents deal with my father's cancer diagnosis,
treatment and eventual passing all in the span of just over a year. On one of my GP home visits I
was quite affected by talking to Mr A, an elderly man with COPD who was living with his wife,
who had dementia. I will look at the

Resilience In The Workplace
The resiliency quiz and article suggest that resiliency is innate to most people. No matter the
challenges, we all have the capacity for resiliency building. As Social Workers we will encounter
individuals who may need assistance in recognizing, building and maintaining resilience. this
powerful self–assessment tool does an effective job of highlighting areas of resilience and resiliency
builders.
Reflection of Resiliency
Cultural structures, values can positively or negatively impact an individual's resilience."Research
supports that culture, ethnicity, and environment are major factors in the manifestation of resilience
in individuals and communities of color"(Chang, Scott, & Decker, 2009, p. 26).As practitioners we

The organization I work for is experiencing a tremendous and stressful transformation. It requires
that we utilize some of the resiliency builders including perceptiveness, being aware of exactly what
is happening, maintaining a sense of humor ( a recent physical move of an entire organization into
another work site has us labeling water fountains" BHSI only" and "CBH only"...really?).
One of the strengths of this organization is also one of its weaknesses. We have a set criteria for
those that want to access our services, however during the recent economic crash we relaxed our
rules as we were perceptive enough to realize that if we didn't there would be a whole community of
individuals that we would not serve. Encouraging flexibility in the workplace can be challenging as
individuals must be able to discern.
Resilience is the cornerstone of the Strength Based perspective. This tool can be used to re–enforce
resiliency in the individuals we serve and is a excellent self assessment tool. I manage a group of
para–professionals who provide telephonic support to individuals in recovery. I will share the
assessment tool with the group as a baseline tool for resiliency. This quiz can provide conversation
that encourages openness and enlightenment. I believe it will be immensely helpful. Times are
tough, high unemployment, decreased resources within our communities; international unrest are
just some of the stressors that challenge our resiliency. Positive reinforcement is not only welcome,
it is necessary

Resilience Across Lifespan
Resilience across a lifespan can happen different ways from physical development to cognitive
development. We also have social and emotional development. Throughout this paper resilience will
be applied to all of the above mentioned concepts. Resilience across a lifespan is described through
theories, measures, and even personality characteristics. Resilience has also been applied to the
impacts of disasters and traumatic experiences in which will also be touched on throughout this
paper. Resilience is described as "the process of adapting well in the face of adversity, trauma,
tragedy, threats, or significant sources of stress (American Psychological Association, 2016)."
Resilience is an ordinary thing in human beings. It is often described as bouncing back, which refers
to bouncing back from difficult times or situations. As a person grows older resilience grows as
well. A person's past can most certainly affect how a person uses resiliency in the present. If a
person is not affected negatively a lot in their past when it comes time for a person to bounce back,
they will not bounce back as smoothly as a person who has had a very traumatic past and has
learned how to bounce back in a smoother fashion. A person's past determines their resiliency in the
present and a person's present determines their resiliency efforts in the future. Resiliency is different
for each and every person. Resiliency also can grow with a person or can dissipate

Resilience In Unbroken
The true meaning of resilience is shown many times in the book Unbroken. Having strong problem–
solving skills is what it took Louie and Phil to survive the troubles of beings trapped at sea. The two
and Mac faced many challenges and all of them dealt with it differently. They supported each other
by communicating and sharing all the food. Support 1: Louie, Phil, and Mac did something many of
us would believe to be a nightmare. They were trapped in the Pacific ocean for 47 days with no food
and water. The hardest obstacles they faced were finding water and keeping their sanity. This is
shown in the text when Louie "instead of allowing large pools of water to gather, he began
continuously sucking the captured water into his mouth, then spitting

The Role Of Resilience In Adolescents
Children and adolescents are resilient. According to McWhirter, McWhirter, McWhirter, and
McWhirter (2013), resilience is the "capacity to adapt and function successfully despite
experiencing chronic stress and adversity" (p. 130). Resilience is also the ability to come back from
a negative situation and turn the adversity into something positive (Prince–Embury, 2015). When
adolescents are placed in a stressful or difficult situation, they strive to make the best of it; however,
there are some adolescents who struggle to make the best of the situation they are in, which leads to
risky behavior. Family factors tend to influence resiliency as well as protective and risk factors.

At–risk youth are still capable of getting involved with school and community activities. Some
adolescents become involved with art, music, and drama so they can express themselves artistically.
Others get involved with sports because of the family–like atmosphere and team–building exercises.
Others become involved with local mentoring organizations like Big Brothers, Big Sisters and
church youth groups. All of these activities serve as protective factors for at–risk youth, and help
adolescents develop resiliency. According to McWhirter et al (2013), "the social support networks of
the larger community also help to ameliorate the effects of stress on children" (p. 131). Adolescents
rely on their peers, youth leaders, coaches, and teachers to help them develop resilience. One of the
risks of depending on peers to help develop resilience is "peer group pressure can be either a very
powerful ally or a formidable antagonist, dissuading or encouraging problem behavior" (McWhirter
et al, 2013, p. 116). As a result, it is imperative for adolescents to choose their friends wisely,
especially if they come from a difficult home background. School and community environments
help adolescents develop the skills they need to overcome their difficulties (McWhirter et al, 2013,
p. 146). Schools and communities also help adolescents develop resiliency because they provide the
support they need to

In this huge world everyone is unique. These unique individuals go through many mental stress,
trauma and bad experiences in life. Due to this some of them are not affected but many are affected
by psychological, mental or physical illness. So what would be explanation for this happening? By
resiliency we can explain this phenomenon in better way. In real life doctors are also promoting this
concept to examine this in every effected individual. In this article, I review theoretical and by

Literature Review:
"Resilience is a positive wave in terms of adversity, rather than to positive adaptation in general, It
surfaces in the face of hardship" (Hawley, 2000, p 102) and also ability of an individual to come
back from hardship. " Without struggle, resilience does not exist " by Hawley.
To understand the resilience we need to understand the concept of stress. Stress is somewhat
subjective both in the measurement of severity and experience; the way in which individuals
perceive and interpret stressors may vary greatly (Bowes & Jaffee, 2013). In this articles we found
that stress is the reason by which resilience occur.

Analysis Of Resilience Theory
Introduction
The American Psychological Association (2014) defines resilience as "the process of adapting well
in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats or even significant sources of stress." (American
Psychological Association, 2014, pg.1) Resilience Theory uses the definition of resilience in the
context of the lives of clients by explaining although people may face adversity in their lives it is
still possible to overcome that adversity to achieve success and personal gains. Resilience Theory
describes how clients "use protective factors to assist in a self– righting process over the life course
to fare well in the face of adversity." (Hutchison, 2015, pg.9)

Organizations gain experience, resources, and influence. The systematic character of oppression
becomes clearer. Social forces join together, work through differences. (Smith, 2013) Steve's life

"Diversity is about the recognition and celebration of the differences that exist in our society.
Diversity is the strength of our social structure. Diversity is about acknowledging and tolerating
those who are different, even though those differences may make us uncomfortable. Diversity is
about recognizing barriers that prevent access to our social systems and building a broader
community infrastructure. Diversity challenges us at the personal level to broaden our assumptions
about whether differences make someone "less than" us. At the interpersonal level, diversity
challenges us." (Yee,

How Kids Learn Resilience Summary
The Falsehood of Resilience
The article How Kids Learn Resilience is written by Paul Tough and she confesses "for all our talk
about non–cognitive skills, nobody has yet found a reliable way to teach kids to be grittier or more
resilient" (Tough 3). A new idea is developing that these characteristics are not found in teaching but
through environmental forces inside the classroom and at home. In the article researchers,
economists, American schools, and teachers showcase how grit and resilience can be placed in the
minds of young children and in the middle and high school stages. The author takes us on a journey
through different theories, studies, and programs to help grasp a better understanding of how young
children and teenagers can develop ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In comparison, this viewpoint alternated my opinion as Dante Cicchetti displays "research on the
determinants of resilience in maltreated children is presented as an illustration of empirical work
that is moving from single–level to multilevel investigations of competent functioning in the face of
adversity and trauma".
For many different intellectuals in this article feel as though "all our talk about noncognitive skills,
nobody has yet found a reliable way to teach kids to be grittier or more resilient" (3). As a result,
Paul Tough does not build a logical argument because nobody can determine how a person obtains
grittiness.
Due to this topic being so broad, there is no definite answer to how an individual can truly learn
resilience. Also, in the article How Kids Learn Resilience Paul Tough emphasizes the point that
non–cognitive traits like grit, self–regulation, optimism, and resilience simply cannot be taught. In
this case, I agree but on the other hand, she reveals that it is being built through student–centered
environments, which include both a sense of belonging and academic

Theories Of Resilience
2.1. What is resilience?
The word 'resilience' is derived from the Latin word 'resilire' which translates as 'to bounce back', it
can be described as a dynamic process, encompassing positive adaptation within the context of
significant adversity (Luthar, Cicchetti, & Becker, 2000). In cases where children have experienced
trauma or are living in high stress environments, resilience has been defined as the capacity to adapt
and thrive despite challenging and threatening circumstances (Masten, 2001). Resilience is not
something some children 'have a lot of', it is something that develops as a result of complex
transactions between the child and their environment (Sroufe, 1997). It is perceived as a crucial
element in maintaining and promoting ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Key to promoting children's resilience is therefore, a greater understanding of these protective
factors that enable some children to be resilient (The Mental Health Foundation, 1999). There is
evidence to suggest that it is easier to change a younger child's behaviour than it is to change the
behaviour of an older child, indicating why early intervention is crucial (Smith, 2002). Considering
the ecology of human development framework theorized by Bronfenbrenner (1979) in relation to
resilience displays that interventions at multiple levels need to take place concurrently (Edwards et

Understand The Importance Of Resilience
combine new ideas, data and options enables us to reflect, assimilate, plan and imagine the future.
When we do not take this time, we make quick decisions that may not be to our best improvement.
These quick decisions can change us and affect our career, our fulfilment, and, ultimately, our
resilience.
At the same time, the organizational demands are constantly changing based on available resources
and global impacts. Today's organizations ask us to define ourselves with a role. We need to
understand our skills and figure out what we need to learn to remain current and build for the future.

The Research of Resilience
Over decades, the research of resilience has developed from understanding individual's resilience
qualities and protective factors, to the process of resilience and the interventions that promote
resilience (Richardson, 2002; Wright et al., 2013). Recently, the focus of resilience shift to the
neurobiological process because of the development of science and technology (Wright et al., 2013).
While these literatures emerging, there are two noteworthy issues. First, the outcome of the studies
were mainly emphasized on main–stream population (Ungar, 2006). Second, little attention was
given to resilience across cultures (Ungar, 2006; Ungar et al., 2005). Hence, it is important to
investigate how resilience is being defined and understand in different cultures; what are the
challenges when conducting a cross cultural research; and what are the key elements when
implementing intervention in different cultures. There are varieties of definitions in regards with
resilience based on different perspectives (Arrington et al., 2000). For instance, from a
developmental perspective, resilience can be defined as positive and successful outcomes despite
challenging situations (Masten, 2007; Windle, 2010). Resilience can also be defined as recovery to
normal functioning from adversity or coping well under currently risk conditions (Masten, 2007;
Windle, 2010). However, not every language has the word "resilience". For example, a phrase, "the
ability to cope with adversity" (Ungar et al.,

Five Principles Of Resilience
ORGANISATIONAL RESILIENCE: A REVIEW
Prof. Fabiola M. Dhanaraj, Principal, Arulmigu Meenakshi College of Nursing, Kanchipuram.
Introduction
The term "Organizational Resilience" may be new to many of us especially in nursing. Our
workplaces can face resilience which we should be able to manage. Resilience is an abstract term
that is used substantially across a range of disciplines, such as psychology, sociology, economics,
ecology, engineering and network theory, to name but a few. In its most general human context,
resilience can be stated as "the ability to recover from or adjust easily to misfortune or change".
However, in its most generally accepted form, the term resilience refers to the way in which any
entity or system achieves an end state of 'keeping going'.

1. Leadership: Resilience begins with enterprise leadership setting the priorities, allocating the
resources and making the commitments to establish organizational resilience throughout the
enterprise. Leadership achieves a balance between risk taking and risk containment to ensure
ongoing innovation, but in the context of prudent risk minimization.
2. Culture: The second component of organizational resilience is enterprise culture. A resilient
culture is built on principles of organizational empowerment, purpose, trust and accountability. A
resilient culture is built on a strong sense of trust between employees, management, suppliers and
partners. People assume responsibility without question. People commit to action and do what has to
be done – regardless of rank, title or job description. A resilient organization is a passionate

Resilience And Adversity
Resilience – The Power to Overcome Adversity
The life of Nelson Mandela has inspired many to pursue the essence of resilience and the ways in
which people recover from adversity to strength. The argument lies in whether resilience is a born
quality or something that could be learned. In looking to find the answer to this question, I had to
read several articles on the subject which turned out to be quite of a challenge, but most of the
information available concluded that resilience is a process that is learned versus something that
which is innate. It's a process that is learned from self–motivation, life experiences and continual
learning versus a quality that one is born with.

Insight is built on the experience of having been understood by a caring and attentive other and is a
product of secure attachment. Consistent experiences of empathic attunement deepen our capacity
for insight and reality testing. As we mature emotionally and cognitively we broaden our ability to
recognize and appreciate others' subjectivity and separateness as well as the capacity to reflect on
our own experience. Inherent to this is an appreciation that other behaviors are not necessarily
directed toward us, even when we are affected by them. These abilities are essential to resilience in
that they allow us to tolerate experiences of existential isolation. It was this constellation of qualities
that allowed Mandela to persevere in the struggle against apartheid and sustained him during the
years spent on Robin Island.
In the face of adversity, one has to be open to acceptance. The resilient individual is sustained by an
inherent capacity for acceptance; that is an ability to accept what cannot be changed and ultimately
embracing the life that one has been given. At times, this may involve a willingness to surrender,
and nearly always, it demands an openness to love others as they

and use it to reflect other aspects in their life in positively. When using resilience we can understand
how to use it with the seven key elements (Harrington, 2012).
They key elements that are discussed are: emotional, spiritual, social, family, and physical. When
using these elements, people understand how to become flexible. When achieving their goals in

The Resilience Factor is mainly targeted at working–class Western culture, whereas the research of
Maggie Zraly and her colleagues focuses on the vastly different people of Rwanda, who experienced
a tremendously dissimilar adversity from what most people reading The Resilience Factor have or
will face. However, this sharp contrast also allows us to see the universality of resilience in all of
humanity, independent of culture, geography, or values. Kwihangana, the Rwandan process of
drawing strength from within oneself, bears a striking resemblance to one of the techniques of
"putting it in perspective," in which you tell yourself that you can deal with an adversity, that you do
have the strength to overcome (Reivich and Shatté 208). The process of "ABC–ing" adversities also
includes the essential aspect of identifying and accepting an adversity for what it is, closely related
to gukomeza ubuzima, which allows Rwandans to do the same by accepting struggle and continuing
to fight. Finally, the practice kwongera kubaho, which forces Rwandans to acknowledge their
existential being, is closely related to part of The Resilience Factor's conclusion, which highlights
the "existential paradox" of mortality. This paradox is what "makes time precious," as we
contemplate the risk of taking action while we only have one life to live (309). This relates to our
resilience in that we must balance the fear of failure and pain while taking the right risks to thrive.

When faced with severe and extreme circumstances, most people tend to adapt and achieve some
balance in their lives, this has been called "resilience" (Bonanno, 2004). Despite nuances in the
concept of of resilience, there is a general consensus to define it as a phenomenon or process that
reflects a relative positive adaptation despite contexts of risks significant adversity, or trauma
(Luthar, 2006). Whereas some experts consider thet, after having undergone an adverse experience,
especially in old age, maintaining one's physical and cognitive functions are sufficient indicators of

Resilience has been studied from diverse perspectives, such as displaying adequate development
despite a series of risk factors that pose a threat to such development, functioning well under

The theoretical postures and ways of understanding resilience are also different because they
consider it either in personality trait or dynamic process. For the former perspective, resilience is a
trait that is fixed and stable over time, and the main research goal is to determine the individual
differences that may explain why some individuals perform better than others in adverse contexts (
Campbell–sill et al.,2006). The second perspective considers resilience as a stage resulting from the
combination of diverse protection and risk factors, that is, a dynamic process that "protects" the
individual any moment of one's lifetime and can change as function of one's personal, family, and
social resources, as well as of one's context and

Coastal Resilience
The definition of coastal resilience is when a community builds a plan to be able to "bounce back"
after hazardous events such as flooding, hurricanes, and coastal storms. Resilience is the ability to
prevent short–term events from turning into long–term community disasters. In the Hampton roads
area we have experienced recurring coastal flooding, in 2013 the government said they were joining
as leaders to address these issues, but yet we still are not prepared to handle these hazardous events.
There was a debate that was trying to figure out if these climate changes are manmade, I personally
do not think that they are, I believe that the world is changing everyday and considering that we are
surrounded by water, our circumstances are inevitable.

Organizational Resilience Essay
Background
Modern day organizations have to constantly change to meet the demands of customers. Workers
have to change with the organizations to be able to perform new functions and complete new
sophisticated tasks.
Not only the type of the work employees are required to do changes, place, method, and
environment of the work is also subject to transformation. With high turnover being common
characteristic among modern organizations, people have to work in teams each time composed of
different people.
Mallak (1998) noticed that employees working in the sales and supplies department are even greater
exposed to external changes as they have to work with many different people.
Today workers have more discretionary power and are allowed ... Show more content on

Being resilient means being able to act adequately in demanding situations, avoid unwanted
developments during the course of working day, and make the most of opportunities in spite of all
the turmoil associated with the organizational change.
Organizations have to design and implement effective programs of resilience to ensure their own
survival (Mallak, 1998). Resilient organizations are the organizations that maintain their profitability
even when going through major transformation. This is due to the fact that its employees do not
need much time to adapt to new realities or to recover from stress associated with the change.
Defining Resilience
Resilience translates from Latin as "to leap back" and can be defined as "the ability to recover from
or easily adjust to misfortune or change" (Russell Consulting, Inc., 2007).
Lee (2008) writes that resilience "refers to a person's capacity to handle difficulties, demands, and
high pressure without becoming stressed."
Lee divides the notion of resilience into four separate "facets":
1. The ability to "not sweat the small stuff"– Resilient workers "maintain their good cheer" despite
all the small frustrations accompanying the employees through their working day (Lee, 2008).
2. Ability to perform under high pressure– Resilient workers cannot be overwhelmed by minor
difficulties at work place, neither pressure exercised upon them can

Resilience In The Glass Castle
My Definition Of Resilience This summer I read The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls and it was
amazing. I really loved every page of Jeannette Wall's novel, and it just seemed to get better and
better as I kept reading. Wall's novel is recognized as "a remarkable memoir of redemption and
resilience." But what is resilience? To be honest I couldn't really truly comprehend what resilience
was. I had a very vague definition of it, but, not anything I could explain with certainty. In this paper
I will find my own definition of resilience, which'll not only help me finish a summer assignment
but also help me to fully understand resilience.

Rebutance Theory: The Retigence Of Resilience Theory
RESILIENCE THEORY
Originator of the theory
The term has its roots in the ecological concept. It came as Norman Garmezy in the 1950s studied
the developmental psychopathology of children and the bulk of his findings were published in the
1980s, however the word became fashionable in the 1970s where Holling took over the word and
applied it in his work of mechanics (Alexander, 2013).
Overview of the theory
The emergence of resilience theory in the 1970s as (Rak & Patterson, 1966) argue is associated with
a reduction in emphasis on pathology and an increase in emphasis on strengths which makes it a
product of the Strength theory. The theory addresses the strengths that people and systems
demonstrate that enable them to rise above adversity, VanBreda (2001). Investigators like (Block &
Block, 1980) assume that resilience is located "within the person." Luthar, Cicchetti and Becker
(2000) propose that there are multiple sources and pathways to resiliency, including social context.
In agreement to Luthar and others' idea, Powell (2014) argues that resilience theory believes that an
individual's response to his/her environment, whether ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There is a general notion that social support is one of the factors that fosters resilience. Frydenberg
(2008) shares the same sentiment by saying social support may have its place in protecting
adolescents against different forms of hardships and can help boost self–esteem which in turn builds
the individual's resilience. In support of the statements, adolescent girls need support to be able to
deal with hardships. The reviewed literature has made it clear that when there is lack of support for
adolescent girls, be it at the schools or in the national context, there is likelihood that they may get
pregnant as they have a low resilience outstand other factors that put them at risk of

Resilience In Charter School
Resilience
There have been times when bouncing back from a difficult situation is hard, but it doesn't always
have to be. You use this tool everyday and you don't even know it. Those little times when you feel
like quitting but know it's worth it or even flexibility can mess you up a bit, resilience comes in
handy there too. There are many times in school where I have wanted to give up, this could be in
school, during a game or match but that doesn't mean I gave up. I used resilience without even
knowing that this word existed! In my charter school we play a lot of four square, I really sucked at
the game when we first started but after a while, even when I really hated the game, I knew I wanted
to be the best so I kept playing and now

The resilience methodology seeks to build on strengths and strengthen the supports and
opportunities of the child. Resilience plays a vital role in assisting a child in settling into a new
placement, without experiencing major emotional difficulties. Three factors that promote resilience
are secure base, Self–esteem and Self–efficacy(Grotberg, 2000). These can be influenced by positive
experiences on a daily basis, some which will be highlighted throughout the assignment.
Resilience in an individual refers to successful adaptation, despite the risk and adversity. The
manner in which Matson 2004 defines resilience is very clear to me, as I can relate and reflect this to
one particular girl that resided in the care centre I worked. Throughout the young girl's childhood,
she developed an insecure and ambivalent attachment to both her parents, as a result of their hectic
lifestyle of substance misuse. At a young age her father died from the HIV viruses, which lead her
mother in becoming depressed and profoundly dependant on drugs. Due to the mother's dependency,
she was unable to respond accordingly to the girls needs, given very mixed and inconsistent
responses. At the age of 10, due to extreme neglect, the young girl was removed from her mothers
care and entered the care setting. Over the years the young girl had experienced several placement
breakdowns, and at 13 was admitted to a residential centre. During this time she felt both a

Social Resilience In Children
Resilience in Children Resiliency is described as "a network of individual and environmental risk
and protective factors that predict an individual's tendency to thrive under adverse conditions"
(Peters & Woolley, 2015). It is also defined as "the dynamic process whereby individuals exhibit
positive behavioral adaptations despite significant adversity or trauma" (Banatao, 2011). Resilience
can be linked to many factors such as socioeconomic status, race, gender, depression, violence, and
educational deficiencies. Developmental strategies of resilience can be effective in helping leaders
of schools overcome adversity. According to S. Colby Peters and Michael E. Woolley, Graduation

Resilience And Positive Adaptation
With the rise of positive psychology, resilience and positive adaptation have become a field of
research in themselves. Resilience has various definitions but is broadly accepted to mean a
"dynamic, evolving process of positive attitudes and effective strategies" that we employ in response
to life stressors (Jensen, Trollope–Kumar, Waters, Everson, 2008). Masten, Best and Garmezy
(1990) defines resilience as 'the process of, capacity for, or outcome of successful adaptation despite
challenging or threatening circumstances' (p. 425). The American Psychological Association defines
resilience as 'the process of adapting well in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats, or
significant sources of stress – such as family and relationship problems, serious health problems or
workplace, and financial stressors' (American Psychological Association [APA], 2011). ... Show

Amit Sood, M.D., director of research and practice in the Complementary and Integrative Medicine
Program at the Mayo Clinic and an associate professor of medicine at the Mayo Clinic College of

burnout and furthermore increases one's predisposition towards stress, providing a higher possibility
of that particular individual to become even worst. An individual would believe that everything that
he or she does is useless, and would experience a sense of disinterest towards work (as cited in

Why Is Resilience Important
Dear, Parents In this unit I have learnt about the importance of Resilience. I believe the most
important aspects of resiliency are appreciation, optimism, and coping with stress. To be resilient is
to bounce back in the face of adversity, depression, tragedy, and other sources of stress. It's a cycle
that many people get stuck in until they pick themselves back up. You experience, you feel, you fail,
you hurt, and you fall. But, you keep on going anyways. Mandy Oaklander conveys that humans
tend to stress over everything. Even if it's a waitress messing up your order, or getting a "C" on a
project (Guilty), and the list goes on and on. I often deal with stress at least once every month and I
don't even realize it . This is where Mandy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I see many people appreciating others, but how come most of us can't appreciate ourselves? It's
because we believe we don't deserve it. we would rather appreciate other who "deserve" it and not
ourselves, but it doesn't always have to be like that. How can we appreciate others if we cannot
appreciate ourselves? Sometimes, we believe that the universe has shaped our reality and who we
really are, but I believe it's just all in our heads. Shawn Anchor conveys that, We're finding it's not
necessarily the reality that shapes us, but the lens through which your brain views the world that
shapes your reality. And if we can change the lens, not only can we change your happiness, we can
change". And from reading this text we find that It's not the way that the world makes us, but the
way that we see the world. If we can change how we look at the world maybe we can change our
happiness, opportunities, and happiness, opportunities, and for the better. Sometimes I find the
world unfair and totally unpredictable. I find it hard to find my life "going well" when it's hard for
me to look at the bright side of things when my life just isn't functioning the way it's supposed to.
My fears and anxiety really play a huge role in this because they often stop me from going after

Disadvantages Of Resilience In Children
Resilience is the process of successfully adapting to various challenges or extremely threatening
circumstances (Ungar et al., 2013; Ungar, Russell, & Connelly, 2014). Resilient children develop
protective responses during times of uncertainty, threat, and surprise. It is an active process
involving the interaction of vulnerability, risk, and protective aspects (Benard, 2004). Resilient
children experience positive results in their development despite the extreme challenges they
encounter (Martin, 2013).
Individuals become resilient in response to internal and external factors that they have, which are
called protective factors. These protective mechanisms are developed within children by having
good role models and access to adequate home, school, and community support (Im, Hughes, Kwok,
Puckett, & Cerda, 2013; Ungar et al., 2013). These protective factors help to buffer adversity. The
greater the protective factors, the more likely it is that a person will persevere through life's
difficulties (Ungar, Russell, & Connelly, 2014). The literature identified a number of protective
factors found among children who were anticipated to struggle, yet experienced positive outcomes
(Benard, 1993). Ungar et al. (2013) observed that a large percentage of children who grow up in
adverse environments display resilience by overcoming the challenges that confront them.
Various models help refine the various aspects of resilience theory (Ungar et al., 2013), such as the

Child Resilience In Out-Of-Home Care
The journal titled Children and Youth Services Review published an article in 2014 by researchers
Tessa Bell and Elisa Romano. This article is Child resilience in out–of–home care: Child welfare
worker perspectives. The authors chose to interview child service workers to discover any missed
information, since most other studies on this topic have focused on interviewing the children, foster
parents, and the child welfare system as a whole. They decided to study children in out–of–home
care because they often experience mistreatment consequently, their resilience, or lack thereof, may
be more easily detected. That is not necessarily the case resilience is abstract, not easily measured,
but for this study it was defined as: "low frequencies

Factors That Affect Resilience
In my term paper, I would like to talk about Resilience which I believe is a prerequisite for an
effective leader. Life has ups and downs and adversities are inevitable. Things can beyond our
control, it is impossible for us to prevent unpleasant circumstances from happening. Difficulties and
problems come out of nowhere, the stress and anxiety associated with adversity may knock us down
if we cope with them inadequately. Chronic stress can lead to mental collapse if we still cannot
manage them well, which is definitely undesirable for a leader because it can affect the cooperation
with others as well as the team morale.
First of all, I would like to define what resilience is. Major scholars believe it is the process to
recover from trauma, or the ability to respond to adversity. According to Sergeant and Laws–
Chapman (2012), resilience refers to "the ability to adapt to adverse conditions while maintaining a
sense of purpose, balance, and positive mental and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are several factors can contribute to and affect resilience, are as follows:
1) Personal attributes
I believe it is one of the major determinants of resilience. Having personal attributes such as calm,
patience and adventurous will facilitate us to become a more resilient person. We will not become
panic–stricken and lose control of ourselves when we encounter adversity. Other positive traits such
as cheerful and optimistic can also conduce to resiliency. It can help us to find positive meanings in
our lives despite adversity. On the contrary, negative traits such as pessimistic, impulsive and
emotionally unstable can affect our resiliency and also our well–being.
2) Family cohesion and relationships
It is also a key factor affecting resilience. A positive, supportive and cohesive family relationship
can promote our resiliency. Relatives are the important props to support us when we are
experiencing adversity.
3) External

Overcoming Resilience
To overcome an obstacle, one must have some essence of resilience within. "Resilience has been
defined as an attitude that enables the individual to examine, enhance and utilize the strengths,
characteristics and other resources available to him or her" (Harrington, 2012). As a gunner in the
military for a Bradley Fighting Vehicle, you are responsible for the turret and weapon system.
Having never been a Bradley Commander, when asked to step up and take command I felt
overwhelmed with the task at hand. Without being resilient, I would have failed as a Brandley
Commander. My first day at the job, I met with my new crew and explained that we are going to
have strict standards and that my intent is to become a top performing crew in our platoon.

Promoting Resilience in Nursing
Promoting Resilience Resilience is defined as a person's ability to weather adversity and come out
of it with a stronger ability to deal with the next challenge (Mosby's Medical Dictionary, n.d.).
Resilience can be noted as a trait within an individual as well as a process through which a person
undergoes during adversity (Jacelon, 1997). Measuring resilience can be done by assessing certain
qualities within an individual and asking questions to elicit better understanding of their current
psychological state (Wagnild & Collins, 2009). Nurses must have a thorough comprehension of
resilience and how to measure and promote this among individuals who are met with health
challenges. By doing this nurses are better able to provide holistic client centred care and inform the
nursing profession. Defining Resilience Resilience is a term that is often applied to those who have
faced hardship and viewed the experience in a positive light as an opportunity to grow and change
for the better (Wagnild & Collins, 2009). The definition however seems to vary from place to place.
Ungar et al. (2008) stated "definitions of resilience are ambiguous when viewed across cultures"
(p.174) which is why the understanding of resilience may be difficult to capture (as cited in Windle,
Bennett & Noyes, 2011). Although the literature agrees on several common themes about resilience
there are many varying opinions on how to define the concept or the attributing factors. Earvolino–
Ramirez (2007) and

Definition Essay On Resilience
Firstly, let me define the word resilient. Resilient is the ability to cope with stress, or the ability to
quickly recover from difficult conditions. Now how resilient do I think I am? I think that in most
situations I am pretty resilient, but I feel like it all depends on the situation. For example, if there
was a death in the family then my resilience would be really low, because of the circumstances. But,
if we were talking about like being a teacher in a new classroom then I feel like my resilience
wouldn't be too high or too low. Being a teacher in a new classroom is of course a big step and
brings a lot of responsibility, which sometimes causes stress. I have recently gone through this
situation, I recently started working at the Children's

Pros And Cons Of Resilience
5. Literature Review
Introduction
Resilience is a broad construct which spans across a broad and diverse range of disciplines. In
engineering resilience of a system refers to a set of behaviours and strategies allowing for the
creation of proactive defences against disturbance and interruption that threatens the systems
integrity (Palazzi et al.,2014). Business on the other hand refer to resilience as an organisation's
capacity to anticipate and react to change, not only to survive, but also to evolve (Newnham and
Crash, 2015). In sport Solomon and Becker created a four–step process which athletes can use to
deal with performance errors called "ARSE" – meaning A= Acknowledge – the error and frustration

They assert that exposure to chronic stress and adversity and a lack of resources to mitigate the risk
could lead to maladjustment. Maholmes, with reference to Garmezy and Rutter (1983) refer to risk
factors as negative occurrences or adverse phenomena in the environment or within the child, that
place the child at risk of having poor outcomes (Maholmes,2014:27). The ecological systems
theories of Bronfenbrenner (1989) and Garmezy triad (1991) corroborates with this assertion ; as it
opines that this factors are present at the individual, family and community levels. Risk for
individuals which may result in negative outcomes may include, chronic illness temperament or
mental disorders. At a family level it may represent harsh parenting styles , job loss, depression,
food insecurity, proverty and economic disadvantage. Community risk may manifest in poor
neighbourhood quality and cohesion, or lack of resources (Maholmes,2014:24 ; Southwick and
Charney,2012:20). It is imperative to note though that risk is cumulative in nature. The presence of
one increases the likelihood that more will emerged (Newman,2004 ; Southwick and Charney,2012 ;

How Resilience Helps People Overcome Adversity

  • 1. The Resilience In The Play Resilience is the ability to bounce back from adversity or hardship, this idea was express to the audience by Debra Oswald in Gary's house and podcast through the lives of fictitious characters based on real Australian People. She chooses themes such as people marginalised in society, challenging gender roles and the past affecting the present knowing that the audience will relate to it. By using these ideas with the diverse range of characters, Oswald is able to show how people need resilience and how important it is to overcome adversity through engagement with characters and their development throughout the play. The audience is showed the importance of resilience when they were introduce to Gary. Oswald has given Gary numerous of circumstances ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Dave faces the issue of the past affecting the present because of this issue he tries to find a place where he belongs in the world. Oswald gave Dave a difficult problem and that is feeling the guilt of the death of a new friend where he had a chance to save him. "But timing matters...it would've been different" by using this emotive language the audience felt connected to Dave even more and they would have want to know how he can over come this event. Normally Dave would just give up like many people would but Gary's death is Dave's agent of change. He in the past would have never gotten involved in physical labour nor a deep relationship, but after Gary's death he helped build the house while getting in a deep relationship with Christine, thus showing his ability of resilience. Oswald didn't want to end her play with Gary's death as expressed in the podcast so she made Gary's death as a catalyst of change and "hoped that it was the right solution". As the progression of play the audience was treated to characters transitioning such as Dave from little resilience to strong amounts of resilience in bouncing back from the passing of Gary and implicating the importance of ... • 3. Resilience Is An Aspect Of Health Resilience in People Approaching the End of Their Lives Introduction Resilience reflects the ability of someone to maintain a stable equilibrium(1), that is to retain a sense of identity or self(2), when dealing with adversity or misfortune. Highly resilient individuals are capable of coping with unexpected challenges, and may have a number of mechanisms or strategies to help them do so. Resilience is an aspect of health that is becoming increasingly recognised in medicine(3), as having resilience enables self–care and self–healing, which is beneficial in multiple ways. By being actively involved in his or her own wellbeing, a patient is likely to have better outcomes(3). In addition, healthcare resources are conserved, allowing them to be used to help a patient with less resilience. Although the importance of resilience in carers of the ill cannot be understated, in this essay I will primarily focus on resilience in patients approaching end of life, as there is a great deal for them to go through, all the way from diagnosis to death. The concept of resilience itself is something we are all familiar with in one way or another. I experienced seeing resilience being tested firsthand from watching my parents deal with my father's cancer diagnosis, treatment and eventual passing all in the span of just over a year. On one of my GP home visits I was quite affected by talking to Mr A, an elderly man with COPD who was living with his wife, who had dementia. I will look at the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

As Social Workers we will encounter individuals who may need assistance in recognizing, building and maintaining resilience. this powerful self–assessment tool does an effective job of highlighting areas of resilience and resiliency builders. Reflection of Resiliency Cultural structures, values can positively or negatively impact an individual's resilience."Research supports that culture, ethnicity, and environment are major factors in the manifestation of resilience in individuals and communities of color"(Chang, Scott, & Decker, 2009, p. 26).As practitioners we must always be aware ... It requires that we utilize some of the resiliency builders including perceptiveness, being aware of exactly what is happening, maintaining a sense of humor ( a recent physical move of an entire organization into another work site has us labeling water fountains" BHSI only" and "CBH only"...really?). One of the strengths of this organization is also one of its weaknesses. We have a set criteria for those that want to access our services, however during the recent economic crash we relaxed our rules as we were perceptive enough to realize that if we didn't there would be a whole community of individuals that we would not serve. Encouraging flexibility in the workplace can be challenging as individuals must be able to discern. Resilience is the cornerstone of the Strength Based perspective. This tool can be used to re–enforce resiliency in the individuals we serve and is a excellent self assessment tool. I manage a group of para–professionals who provide telephonic support to individuals in recovery. I will share the assessment tool with the group as a baseline tool for resiliency. This quiz can provide conversation that encourages openness and enlightenment. I believe it will be immensely helpful. Times are tough, high unemployment, decreased resources within our communities; international unrest are just some of the stressors that challenge our resiliency. Positive reinforcement is not only welcome, it is necessary ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Resilience Across Lifespan Resilience across a lifespan can happen different ways from physical development to cognitive development. We also have social and emotional development. Throughout this paper resilience will be applied to all of the above mentioned concepts. Resilience across a lifespan is described through theories, measures, and even personality characteristics. Resilience has also been applied to the impacts of disasters and traumatic experiences in which will also be touched on throughout this paper. Resilience is described as "the process of adapting well in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats, or significant sources of stress (American Psychological Association, 2016)." Resilience is an ordinary thing in human beings. It is often described as bouncing back, which refers to bouncing back from difficult times or situations. As a person grows older resilience grows as well. A person's past can most certainly affect how a person uses resiliency in the present. If a person is not affected negatively a lot in their past when it comes time for a person to bounce back, they will not bounce back as smoothly as a person who has had a very traumatic past and has learned how to bounce back in a smoother fashion. A person's past determines their resiliency in the present and a person's present determines their resiliency efforts in the future. Resiliency is different for each and every person. Having strong problem– solving skills is what it took Louie and Phil to survive the troubles of beings trapped at sea. The two and Mac faced many challenges and all of them dealt with it differently. They supported each other by communicating and sharing all the food. Support 1: Louie, Phil, and Mac did something many of us would believe to be a nightmare. They were trapped in the Pacific ocean for 47 days with no food and water. The hardest obstacles they faced were finding water and keeping their sanity. This is shown in the text when Louie "instead of allowing large pools of water to gather, he began continuously sucking the captured water into his mouth, then spitting ... • 11. The Role Of Resilience In Adolescents Children and adolescents are resilient. According to McWhirter, McWhirter, McWhirter, and McWhirter (2013), resilience is the "capacity to adapt and function successfully despite experiencing chronic stress and adversity" (p. 130). Resilience is also the ability to come back from a negative situation and turn the adversity into something positive (Prince–Embury, 2015). When adolescents are placed in a stressful or difficult situation, they strive to make the best of it; however, there are some adolescents who struggle to make the best of the situation they are in, which leads to risky behavior. Family factors tend to influence resiliency as well as protective and risk factors. Family factors that influence resiliency in adolescents is parental ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At–risk youth are still capable of getting involved with school and community activities. Some adolescents become involved with art, music, and drama so they can express themselves artistically. Others get involved with sports because of the family–like atmosphere and team–building exercises. Others become involved with local mentoring organizations like Big Brothers, Big Sisters and church youth groups. All of these activities serve as protective factors for at–risk youth, and help adolescents develop resiliency. According to McWhirter et al (2013), "the social support networks of the larger community also help to ameliorate the effects of stress on children" (p. 131). Adolescents rely on their peers, youth leaders, coaches, and teachers to help them develop resilience. One of the risks of depending on peers to help develop resilience is "peer group pressure can be either a very powerful ally or a formidable antagonist, dissuading or encouraging problem behavior" (McWhirter et al, 2013, p. 116). As a result, it is imperative for adolescents to choose their friends wisely, especially if they come from a difficult home background. School and community environments help adolescents develop the skills they need to overcome their difficulties (McWhirter et al, 2013, p. 146). Due to this some of them are not affected but many are affected by psychological, mental or physical illness. So what would be explanation for this happening? By resiliency we can explain this phenomenon in better way. In real life doctors are also promoting this concept to examine this in every effected individual. In this article, I review theoretical and by experimental studies by comparing no difficulty or high difficulty with people experience difficulty built resilience. Analysis Of Resilience Theory Introduction The American Psychological Association (2014) defines resilience as "the process of adapting well in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats or even significant sources of stress." (American Psychological Association, 2014, pg.1) Resilience Theory uses the definition of resilience in the context of the lives of clients by explaining although people may face adversity in their lives it is still possible to overcome that adversity to achieve success and personal gains. Resilience Theory describes how clients "use protective factors to assist in a self– righting process over the life course to fare well in the face of adversity." How Kids Learn Resilience Summary The Falsehood of Resilience The article How Kids Learn Resilience is written by Paul Tough and she confesses "for all our talk about non–cognitive skills, nobody has yet found a reliable way to teach kids to be grittier or more resilient" (Tough 3). A new idea is developing that these characteristics are not found in teaching but through environmental forces inside the classroom and at home. In the article researchers, economists, American schools, and teachers showcase how grit and resilience can be placed in the minds of young children and in the middle and high school stages. The author takes us on a journey through different theories, studies, and programs to help grasp a better understanding of how young children and teenagers can develop ... In comparison, this viewpoint alternated my opinion as Dante Cicchetti displays "research on the determinants of resilience in maltreated children is presented as an illustration of empirical work that is moving from single–level to multilevel investigations of competent functioning in the face of adversity and trauma". For many different intellectuals in this article feel as though "all our talk about noncognitive skills, nobody has yet found a reliable way to teach kids to be grittier or more resilient" (3). As a result, Paul Tough does not build a logical argument because nobody can determine how a person obtains grittiness. Due to this topic being so broad, there is no definite answer to how an individual can truly learn resilience. Also, in the article How Kids Learn Resilience Paul Tough emphasizes the point that non–cognitive traits like grit, self–regulation, optimism, and resilience simply cannot be taught. In this case, I agree but on the other hand, she reveals that it is being built through student–centered environments, which include both a sense of belonging and academic ... • 19. Theories Of Resilience 2.1. What is resilience? The word 'resilience' is derived from the Latin word 'resilire' which translates as 'to bounce back', it can be described as a dynamic process, encompassing positive adaptation within the context of significant adversity (Luthar, Cicchetti, & Becker, 2000). In cases where children have experienced trauma or are living in high stress environments, resilience has been defined as the capacity to adapt and thrive despite challenging and threatening circumstances (Masten, 2001). Resilience is not something some children 'have a lot of', it is something that develops as a result of complex transactions between the child and their environment (Sroufe, 1997). When we do not take this time, we make quick decisions that may not be to our best improvement. These quick decisions can change us and affect our career, our fulfilment, and, ultimately, our resilience. At the same time, the organizational demands are constantly changing based on available resources and global impacts. Today's organizations ask us to define ourselves with a role. • 25. The Research of Resilience Over decades, the research of resilience has developed from understanding individual's resilience qualities and protective factors, to the process of resilience and the interventions that promote resilience (Richardson, 2002; Wright et al., 2013). Recently, the focus of resilience shift to the neurobiological process because of the development of science and technology (Wright et al., 2013). While these literatures emerging, there are two noteworthy issues. First, the outcome of the studies were mainly emphasized on main–stream population (Ungar, 2006). Second, little attention was given to resilience across cultures (Ungar, 2006; Ungar et al., 2005). Hence, it is important to investigate how resilience is being defined and understand in different cultures; what are the challenges when conducting a cross cultural research; and what are the key elements when implementing intervention in different cultures. There are varieties of definitions in regards with resilience based on different perspectives (Arrington et al., 2000). For instance, from a developmental perspective, resilience can be defined as positive and successful outcomes despite challenging situations (Masten, 2007; Windle, 2010). Resilience can also be defined as recovery to normal functioning from adversity or coping well under currently risk conditions (Masten, 2007; Windle, 2010). Introduction The term "Organizational Resilience" may be new to many of us especially in nursing. Our workplaces can face resilience which we should be able to manage. Resilience is an abstract term that is used substantially across a range of disciplines, such as psychology, sociology, economics, ecology, engineering and network theory, to name but a few. In its most general human context, resilience can be stated as "the ability to recover from or adjust easily to misfortune or change". However, in its most generally accepted form, the term resilience refers to the way in which any entity or system achieves an end state of 'keeping going'. Definition ... Culture: The second component of organizational resilience is enterprise culture. A resilient culture is built on principles of organizational empowerment, purpose, trust and accountability. A resilient culture is built on a strong sense of trust between employees, management, suppliers and partners. People assume responsibility without question. People commit to action and do what has to be done – regardless of rank, title or job description. • 29. Resilience And Adversity Resilience – The Power to Overcome Adversity The life of Nelson Mandela has inspired many to pursue the essence of resilience and the ways in which people recover from adversity to strength. The argument lies in whether resilience is a born quality or something that could be learned. In looking to find the answer to this question, I had to read several articles on the subject which turned out to be quite of a challenge, but most of the information available concluded that resilience is a process that is learned versus something that which is innate. It's a process that is learned from self–motivation, life experiences and continual learning versus a quality that one is born with. Insight is built on the experience of having been understood by a caring and attentive other and is a product of secure attachment. Consistent experiences of empathic attunement deepen our capacity for insight and reality testing. As we mature emotionally and cognitively we broaden our ability to recognize and appreciate others' subjectivity and separateness as well as the capacity to reflect on our own experience. Inherent to this is an appreciation that other behaviors are not necessarily directed toward us, even when we are affected by them. These abilities are essential to resilience in that they allow us to tolerate experiences of existential isolation. It was this constellation of qualities that allowed Mandela to persevere in the struggle against apartheid and sustained him during the years spent on Robin Island. In the face of adversity, one has to be open to acceptance. The resilient individual is sustained by an inherent capacity for acceptance; that is an ability to accept what cannot be changed and ultimately embracing the life that one has been given. At times, this may involve a willingness to surrender, and nearly always, it demands an openness to love others as they ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Resilience is a person's response to a situation that helped them get through it in a positive way. The person can use the tough experience, and use it to reflect other aspects in their life in positively. When using resilience we can understand how to use it with the seven key elements (Harrington, 2012). They key elements that are discussed are: emotional, spiritual, social, family, and physical. • 41. My Resilience I did not have a normal childhood. I experienced a death of a parent, the other being an alcoholic, lived through abuse, and lived in foster care. It is no wonder I battle with a mental illness, however, I do not let the disorder run my life. It has been over 6 years since my last hospitalization. I strongly feel the factors that have contributed to my resilience consist of self–determination, a strong support system, proper coping mechanisms and therapy. Resilience according to the Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University, is the ability to adapt to a situation that may alter an individual's lifestyle in a positive way, without being consumed by the negative outcomes (National Scientific Council on Developing Child, 2015). ... • 43. Resilience In Andrew Shatte's When we fall down, it takes resilience to get back up, because without resilience, what reason do we have to rise again? It was on March 14th, my 19th birthday, that I began making my way through Karen Reivich and Andrew Shatté's The Resilience Factor. As a college freshman living away from home for the first time, I can use some advice on how to respond to adversity. This is why I picked up The Resilience Factor, despite being dubious of the "self–help" genre. A beautiful day at Griffith observatory, overlooking Hollywood, made for the perfect opportunity to learn how to keep going in the face of struggle. What more apt setting, where so many dreams are chased after for lifetimes, could there be to find the elusive key to resilience? After ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Resilience Factor is mainly targeted at working–class Western culture, whereas the research of Maggie Zraly and her colleagues focuses on the vastly different people of Rwanda, who experienced a tremendously dissimilar adversity from what most people reading The Resilience Factor have or will face. However, this sharp contrast also allows us to see the universality of resilience in all of humanity, independent of culture, geography, or values. Kwihangana, the Rwandan process of drawing strength from within oneself, bears a striking resemblance to one of the techniques of "putting it in perspective," in which you tell yourself that you can deal with an adversity, that you do have the strength to overcome (Reivich and Shatté 208). The process of "ABC–ing" adversities also includes the essential aspect of identifying and accepting an adversity for what it is, closely related to gukomeza ubuzima, which allows Rwandans to do the same by accepting struggle and continuing to fight. Finally, the practice kwongera kubaho, which forces Rwandans to acknowledge their existential being, is closely related to part of The Resilience Factor's conclusion, which highlights the "existential paradox" of mortality. This paradox is what "makes time precious," as we contemplate the risk of taking action while we only have one life to live (309). This relates to our resilience in that we must balance the fear of failure and pain while taking the right risks to thrive. This balance may not lay directly in The Resilience Factor, the book can help us find ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 45. Resilience Research Paper When faced with severe and extreme circumstances, most people tend to adapt and achieve some balance in their lives, this has been called "resilience" (Bonanno, 2004). Despite nuances in the concept of of resilience, there is a general consensus to define it as a phenomenon or process that reflects a relative positive adaptation despite contexts of risks significant adversity, or trauma (Luthar, 2006). Whereas some experts consider thet, after having undergone an adverse experience, especially in old age, maintaining one's physical and cognitive functions are sufficient indicators of resilience ( Greve and Staudinger, 2006), other investigators believe that, in order to consider a response resilient, there should be "improvement" or "growth" ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Resilience has been studied from diverse perspectives, such as displaying adequate development despite a series of risk factors that pose a threat to such development, functioning well under adverse conditions, or recovering normal functioning after a disaster or adversity (Masten, 2007). The theoretical postures and ways of understanding resilience are also different because they consider it either in personality trait or dynamic process. For the former perspective, resilience is a trait that is fixed and stable over time, and the main research goal is to determine the individual differences that may explain why some individuals perform better than others in adverse contexts ( Campbell–sill et al.,2006). The second perspective considers resilience as a stage resulting from the combination of diverse protection and risk factors, that is, a dynamic process that "protects" the individual any moment of one's lifetime and can change as function of one's personal, family, and social resources, as well as of one's context and ... Resilience is the ability to prevent short–term events from turning into long–term community disasters. In the Hampton roads area we have experienced recurring coastal flooding, in 2013 the government said they were joining as leaders to address these issues, but yet we still are not prepared to handle these hazardous events. Workers have to change with the organizations to be able to perform new functions and complete new sophisticated tasks. Not only the type of the work employees are required to do changes, place, method, and environment of the work is also subject to transformation. With high turnover being common characteristic among modern organizations, people have to work in teams each time composed of different people. Being resilient means being able to act adequately in demanding situations, avoid unwanted developments during the course of working day, and make the most of opportunities in spite of all the turmoil associated with the organizational change. Organizations have to design and implement effective programs of resilience to ensure their own survival (Mallak, 1998). Resilient organizations are the organizations that maintain their profitability even when going through major transformation. This is due to the fact that its employees do not need much time to adapt to new realities or to recover from stress associated with the change. Defining Resilience Resilience translates from Latin as "to leap back" and can be defined as "the ability to recover from or easily adjust to misfortune or change" (Russell Consulting, Inc., 2007). Lee (2008) writes that resilience "refers to a person's capacity to handle difficulties, demands, and high pressure without becoming stressed." Lee divides the notion of resilience into four separate "facets": 1. The ability to "not sweat the small stuff"– Resilient workers "maintain their good cheer" despite all the small frustrations accompanying the employees through their working day (Lee, 2008). 2. Ability to perform under high pressure– Resilient workers cannot be overwhelmed by minor difficulties at work place, neither pressure exercised upon them can ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

But what is resilience? To be honest I couldn't really truly comprehend what resilience was. I had a very vague definition of it, but, not anything I could explain with certainty. • 53. Rebutance Theory: The Retigence Of Resilience Theory RESILIENCE THEORY Originator of the theory The term has its roots in the ecological concept. It came as Norman Garmezy in the 1950s studied the developmental psychopathology of children and the bulk of his findings were published in the 1980s, however the word became fashionable in the 1970s where Holling took over the word and applied it in his work of mechanics (Alexander, 2013). Overview of the theory The emergence of resilience theory in the 1970s as (Rak & Patterson, 1966) argue is associated with a reduction in emphasis on pathology and an increase in emphasis on strengths which makes it a product of the Strength theory. The theory addresses the strengths that people and systems demonstrate that enable them to rise above adversity, VanBreda (2001). Investigators like (Block & Block, 1980) assume that resilience is located "within the person." Luthar, Cicchetti and Becker (2000) propose that there are multiple sources and pathways to resiliency, including social context. In agreement to Luthar and others' idea, Powell (2014) argues that resilience theory believes that an individual's response to his/her environment, whether ... In support of the statements, adolescent girls need support to be able to deal with hardships. • 58. Resilience in an individual refers to successful adaptation, despite the risk and adversity. The manner in which Matson 2004 defines resilience is very clear to me, as I can relate and reflect this to one particular girl that resided in the care centre I worked. Throughout the young girl's childhood, she developed an insecure and ambivalent attachment to both her parents, as a result of their hectic lifestyle of substance misuse. At a young age her father died from the HIV viruses, which lead her mother in becoming depressed and profoundly dependant on drugs. Due to the mother's dependency, she was unable to respond accordingly to the girls needs, given very mixed and inconsistent responses. At the age of 10, due to extreme neglect, the young girl was removed from her mothers care and entered the care setting. Over the years the young girl had experienced several placement breakdowns, and at 13 was admitted to a residential centre. During this time she felt both a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Resilience has various definitions but is broadly accepted to mean a "dynamic, evolving process of positive attitudes and effective strategies" that we employ in response to life stressors (Jensen, Trollope–Kumar, Waters, Everson, 2008). Masten, Best and Garmezy (1990) defines resilience as 'the process of, capacity for, or outcome of successful adaptation despite challenging or threatening circumstances' (p. 425). The American Psychological Association defines resilience as 'the process of adapting well in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats, or significant sources of stress – such as family and relationship problems, serious health problems or workplace, and financial stressors' (American Psychological Association [APA], 2011). ... • 64. Why Is Resilience Important Dear, Parents In this unit I have learnt about the importance of Resilience. I believe the most important aspects of resiliency are appreciation, optimism, and coping with stress. To be resilient is to bounce back in the face of adversity, depression, tragedy, and other sources of stress. It's a cycle that many people get stuck in until they pick themselves back up. You experience, you feel, you fail, you hurt, and you fall. But, you keep on going anyways. Mandy Oaklander conveys that humans tend to stress over everything. Even if it's a waitress messing up your order, or getting a "C" on a project (Guilty), and the list goes on and on. I often deal with stress at least once every month and I don't even realize it . This is where Mandy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I see many people appreciating others, but how come most of us can't appreciate ourselves? It's because we believe we don't deserve it. we would rather appreciate other who "deserve" it and not ourselves, but it doesn't always have to be like that. How can we appreciate others if we cannot appreciate ourselves? Sometimes, we believe that the universe has shaped our reality and who we really are, but I believe it's just all in our heads. Shawn Anchor conveys that, We're finding it's not necessarily the reality that shapes us, but the lens through which your brain views the world that shapes your reality. And if we can change the lens, not only can we change your happiness, we can change". And from reading this text we find that It's not the way that the world makes us, but the way that we see the world. • 66. Disadvantages Of Resilience In Children Resilience is the process of successfully adapting to various challenges or extremely threatening circumstances (Ungar et al., 2013; Ungar, Russell, & Connelly, 2014). Resilient children develop protective responses during times of uncertainty, threat, and surprise. It is an active process involving the interaction of vulnerability, risk, and protective aspects (Benard, 2004). Resilient children experience positive results in their development despite the extreme challenges they encounter (Martin, 2013). Individuals become resilient in response to internal and external factors that they have, which are called protective factors. These protective mechanisms are developed within children by having good role models and access to adequate home, school, and community support (Im, Hughes, Kwok, Puckett, & Cerda, 2013; Ungar et al., 2013). These protective factors help to buffer adversity. The greater the protective factors, the more likely it is that a person will persevere through life's difficulties (Ungar, Russell, & Connelly, 2014). The literature identified a number of protective factors found among children who were anticipated to struggle, yet experienced positive outcomes (Benard, 1993). Ungar et al. (2013) observed that a large percentage of children who grow up in adverse environments display resilience by overcoming the challenges that confront them. • 70. Factors That Affect Resilience In my term paper, I would like to talk about Resilience which I believe is a prerequisite for an effective leader. Life has ups and downs and adversities are inevitable. Things can beyond our control, it is impossible for us to prevent unpleasant circumstances from happening. Difficulties and problems come out of nowhere, the stress and anxiety associated with adversity may knock us down if we cope with them inadequately. Chronic stress can lead to mental collapse if we still cannot manage them well, which is definitely undesirable for a leader because it can affect the cooperation with others as well as the team morale. First of all, I would like to define what resilience is. Major scholars believe it is the process to recover from trauma, or the ability to respond to adversity. According to Sergeant and Laws– Chapman (2012), resilience refers to "the ability to adapt to adverse conditions while maintaining a sense of purpose, balance, and positive mental and ... • 74. Promoting Resilience in Nursing Promoting Resilience Resilience is defined as a person's ability to weather adversity and come out of it with a stronger ability to deal with the next challenge (Mosby's Medical Dictionary, n.d.). Resilience can be noted as a trait within an individual as well as a process through which a person undergoes during adversity (Jacelon, 1997). Measuring resilience can be done by assessing certain qualities within an individual and asking questions to elicit better understanding of their current psychological state (Wagnild & Collins, 2009). Nurses must have a thorough comprehension of resilience and how to measure and promote this among individuals who are met with health challenges. By doing this nurses are better able to provide holistic client centred care and inform the nursing profession. Defining Resilience Resilience is a term that is often applied to those who have faced hardship and viewed the experience in a positive light as an opportunity to grow and change for the better (Wagnild & Collins, 2009). The definition however seems to vary from place to place. Ungar et al. (2008) stated "definitions of resilience are ambiguous when viewed across cultures" (p.174) which is why the understanding of resilience may be difficult to capture (as cited in Windle, Bennett & Noyes, 2011). Although the literature agrees on several common themes about resilience there are many varying opinions on how to define the concept or the attributing factors. Earvolino– Ramirez (2007) and ... Now how resilient do I think I am? I think that in most situations I am pretty resilient, but I feel like it all depends on the situation. For example, if there was a death in the family then my resilience would be really low, because of the circumstances. But, if we were talking about like being a teacher in a new classroom then I feel like my resilience wouldn't be too high or too low. Business on the other hand refer to resilience as an organisation's capacity to anticipate and react to change, not only to survive, but also to evolve (Newnham and Crash, 2015).
