Assignment Instructions
1. An Introduction to Online Teaching
Workshop Assignment
Introduction
A big part of teaching online successfully is having an adventurous attitude. Your
course is almost always enriched when you try to include new and different types of
activities for your students. By just falling back on what is familiar and easy, both you
and your students will only scratch the surface of meaningful online learning.
The biggest adventure, of course, is learning the basics for the first time!
Task
For this workshop, a blank course shell has been created for you in Blackboard. Using this shell, you are
to create an online equivalent of one unit from one of your face-to-face courses.
Your online unit should include at least:
Unit overview
Unit objectives
2 resources (reading, video, interactive website, and/or other)
1 activity (discussion, blog, wiki, or other)
1 assessment (assignment, test, case study, or other)
Be sure to include directions and any web links or information that your students will need to complete
each component.
Lastly, do not worry about creating a “perfect unit” for this assignment. We are all approaching online
learning for the first time, so mastery is not expected!
Time to Complete
You will have one week to complete this unit, which you will share with your fellow workshoppers when
we reconvene for part II.
Assistance
If you need help with using Blackboard throughout that week, don’t hesitate to contact James Kowalski at
kowalskij225@cod.edu or 630-942-2357. That said, don’t be afraid to try things out on your own. Trial
and error is one of the best ways to learn!
