Pre-requisite: Students taking this course need to have  Basic knowledge of computer science  Basic knowledge of methodology in English language teaching Course unit value: 2 credits Course description/Aims “Media in Language Teaching” course is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills in using different kinds of media as an effective tool in teaching English. With hands-on tasks, students will be able to use latest technologies in teaching English. Essentially, students will be provided with opportunities to practice teaching using these kinds of media. Course objectives The objective of this course is to enable students to use different kinds of media in teaching English. Course: Media in English Language Teaching  Operate LCD projector, TV connected to Computer  Adapt e-books for teaching purposes  Know where to look for pictures, how to find, choose, download the intended pictures, edit and use them in teaching  Know where to look for videos; how to find, choose, and download them; how to convert them into different kinds of format, edit for the purposes of teaching, and use them to teach  Use different kinds of animation, insert, edit, and package audio and video in Power Point for effective teaching  Make quizzes using Hot Potatoes and a language website using Microsoft Front Page  Use different Web 2.0 tools in teaching Methodology On the basis of teaching practice orientation, this course is developed by these kinds of activities Lectures Group discussions Task-based activities Video-based activities Students’ teaching practice Online comment participation Text book: Combination of handouts will be given to the students each week. Course policies: • Attend class regularly. No more than 3 absences are allowed. Special cases must be discussed with teacher for consideration. • Do the assignment, carefully prepare for and participate fully in every class meeting. Lack of active participation will affect your grade. • Practice teaching tasks with media in group or on your own to monitor the progress. • Constructively give comments to your friends’ teaching demos for development as a whole • Turn in the assignments on time for advice as well as assessment from teacher. Discuss with your partners the problems you face when you use e- materials. What have you done or what would you like to change to meet your teaching objectives?
