The Battle of Coral Sea Essay
The Battle of Coral Sea was the first major sea battle between allied fleet forces, including those of
the United States and Australian Navies, and the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) during World War II.
Pivotal in terms of allied naval fleet operations during the war, the Battle of Coral Sea was also the
first naval battle that featured opposing air craft carriers in close proximity to each other, resulting in
air battles initiated by sea, rather than from traditional land bases. The following provides relevant
details. The plan calling for expansion of Japanese forces throughout the Pacific theater was
developed by the IJN and Japanese Army. As detailed by Stille, "This called for a series of
sequenced operations designed to bring key ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This had the effect of reducing the contingent of allied aircraft carriers in the Pacific by half. Hence,
when the Japanese launched their next offensive in the Southern Pacific, the IJN fleet would now be
augmented with carrier support, while U.S Naval forces suffered from a reduction in the same
support vital to their mission of defending a major Japanese offensive (Stille 8). Prior to the
upcoming Coral Sea battle, a number of Japanese military messages had been intercepted by the
U.S. Navy signals intelligence unit. The first, dated March 28, 1942, was encoded as stating "The
objective of MO will be first to restrict the enemy fleet movements and will be accomplished by
means of attacks on the north coast of Australia." ("Battle of the Coral Sea") Subsequent messages
were intercepted that provided allied forces with updated details concerning IJN fleet progress, as
well as elements of IJN plans that included battleship and carrier logistics. This resulted in the U.S.
Navy's deployment of a cotillion of numerous warships and support craft, and also the carriers
Lexington and Yorktown ("Battle of the Coral Seas"). In the upcoming battle, these ships would do
battle against a superior IJN force comprised of far more battleships, submarines and support craft,
as well as aircraft carriers. While the events leading up to the battle have been

Analysis Of The Book ' Hello Comrades '
Hello comrades, this is a journal to document my story and the stories of my companions as we
fought for the freedom of all species who live in this world. The purpose of the journal is also to
provide information in regards to the locations of bases and strongholds. For those of you who know
me now, the beginning of my tale may be difficult to believe because I was a much different person
all those years ago. If you are a total stranger to myself and my cause, you will learn the best ways
of contacting the resistance and getting this to their leader if I am gone. All of these events were
witnessed by me and added to by others that were there with me. I will begin my story on the day
that my life changed forever, the day on which I nearly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

for those of you who know nothing of my past, it may come as a surprise to you that I was very

The Paradise. As I stood behind that door fearing for my life, I came to the conclusion that I could
die that day, that everything I had ever known would end and I would be forced into whatever came
next. "They're trying to board us Captain, what do we do?" a crew member near the door asked.
Before the captain responded, a voice carried clearly from the other ship. "We are the King's men,
prepare to be boarded," someone from the privateer said. At this I naively believed that we were all
safe. I should have known better but I blame my upbringing that I was not able to anticipate what
would happen next. I felt a dull thud reverberate along the wooden floor of the door frame. The four
men that came aboard first were all armed with crossbows slung across their backs and swords at
their belts. They were followed by a man in armor who had only a sword. The man who appeared to
be the captain of the other vessel approached the center of the ship as his men spread out, gathering

The Collins Class Submarine Project
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The Royal Australian Navy's Collins Class Submarine is designed to replace the 30 year old Oberon
Submarines. The Collins Class is the first submarine to be made in Australia and is the most
advanced of its time due to its software architecture. Deep Trouble addresses various issues that
were faced during the design and development stages of the Collins Class project. This report will
focus on the interrelationship between the three PMBOK knowledge areas of scope, procurement
and quality management and the impact each had on the final project.

DESIGN SELECTION
The two finalists for the submarine design were the German company HDW–IKL and to the surprise
of many, the Swedish company, Kockums. Deep Trouble identifies that the selection process to
choose the Collins Class Submarine was badly flawed and it was believed by many that the Swedish
were nothing more than a 'straw man' and had no real chance of winning the competition. Prior to
sitting in front of two selection committees to defend their designs, the Germans were given a list of
eight questions that they would be asked. This information was leaked to the Germans by a member
of the submarine project team with the belief that their submarine design was the one Australia
should purchase.
Following a change in government, a high level Australian Council Trades Union (ACTU)
government delegation visited Europe. Upon its return an industrial blueprint was released called
'Australia Reconstructed' which made special mention of the Swedish company Kockums for their
pioneering organisational ability. Just one month prior to the selection of the winning tender, critical
performance areas were adjusted by the navy and Kockums were upgraded, whilst HDW–IKL had

ORIGIN OF BATTLE
10. The Battle of Calabria, (known to the Italian Navy as the Battle of Punta Stilo) was a naval battle
during the Battle of the Mediterranean in World War II. It was fought between the Italian Royal
Navy (Regia Marina) and the British Royal Navy and the Royal Australian Navy. The battle
occurred 30 miles to the east of Punta Stilo, the "toe" of Italy (Calabria), on 9 July 1940.
11 When World War II opened, it was much to the surprise of the Italian forces who, like many in
Europe, did not expect conflict until 1941 at the earliest. At the time their forces in Libya were ill–
equipped for war, and the Italian fleet was forced to start large supply operations in order to bring
them up to fighting condition.

The Revolutionary War And The Declaration Of Independence
Decades following the Revolutionary War and the Declaration of Independence, America continued
to face challenges in their young country. Tensions with the British, as well as Native Americans, led
to more struggles for America. The British failed to recognize the United States of America as a
separate and free country, and by enlisting the help of frustrated Native Americans they continued to
be a sore within America. They believed they had rights to some parts of land in western Florida,
they joined forces with Native Americans when Americans decide to move westward, and worst of
all they continued to impress Americans onto British ships because of problems with trade.
Tensions with the British continued to rise and a factor for the War of 1812 was the problem with
British West Florida. The War Hawks, who were a group of men who had a strong hatred towards
the British, were irate with the British over territorial issues. Among these men were John C.
Calhoun and Henry Clay, who "brimmed with the cocky belligerence of youth and were super–
nationalists" (Conlin 217). These men were wanting to conquer Canada, and the idea of doing so
was not implausible. Great Britain had an army in Canada, but it had slowly been reduced and
Americans thought it would be a perfect time to try and conquer the land. However, America
unfortunately was not able to conquer the lands in Canada, and the land remained the property of the
British.
There were also territorial issues with western

William Golding 's Lord Of The Flies
Research Paper: Lord of the Flies
William Golding, the author of Lord of The Flies, included adults for only a brief time throughout
the novel, playing only a minor role at the end. The absence of adults exemplifies how children
require the structure and guidance that only parents can provide, symbolically, how nations newly
freed from the British Empire's control would be better off under English colonial power to survive
and maintain order before deteriorating into anarchy.
The adults of the novel can be seen as the mother nation, England, and the British schoolboys are
England's 'children', the colonies. The British people believe that without the help of England, the
independent colonies will eventually fall into chaos and savagery and are in need to be rescued by
England. We see this when the boys chose to hunt Ralph, but are saved by the "white–coat" British
Naval Officer who shows them their wrongs and corrects their savage–ways.
In fact, Lord of the Flies published in 1954; only seven years after England lost its control over its
"crown jewel", also known as India. Although the idea of granting independence to a colony was not
new, the possibility of losing India was outrageous, it is one of the wealthiest in terms of minerals,
gems, and spices. In the same year of 1954, the British Kingdom lost its control over one of the
greatest man–made waterway of the world––the Suez Canal (New World Encyclopedia:
Decolonization). Due to its strategic geographic location, the

Battle Of Crete : The Battle For Crete
Battle for Crete
Introduction
The battle of Crete occurred due to various causes and consequences including the enormous
demand on the island by both the allies and the Axis. The battle began just after dawn on 20 May
1941. The air above was filled with parachutes as thousands of trained elite German Para troops
began to drop from the skies. This was the beginning of the Battle for Crete. For 12 intense days the
allies, New Zealanders, British, Australian and Greek troops, assisted by Cretan civilians, tried to
fend off a huge airborne attack by the Axis. They were almost successful. Many New Zealanders
made it off Crete, but thousands were left behind. The Cretans and the New Zealanders still
remember this significant battle in New Zealand history.
Causes of the Battle for Crete
Crete's strategic importance
The most important cause of the battle of Crete was the importance of Crete along with king George
of Greece and his entourage. The retreat from Greece involved retreating from the Germans and
Italians who were pursuing the allies, the allies then retreated to the island of Crete which was
defendable with the right amount of soldiers. The island of Crete needed to be defended from the
axis just as much as the axis wanted the island.
The island of Crete was wanted by the allies as the island contained two airfields which allowed the
short ranged planes that were used during world war 2 to reach the Romanian oilfields and bomb
them successfully. The largest refinery in

Book review
Remembering a Forgotten war by Donald R. Hickey 2012, an academic journal, talks about the
military history where by people were subjected to a difficult and different lifestyle than the one
they were used too at that time.
The journal explains in details how James Madison and other citizens in the state experienced harsh
situations brought upon them by the Republican repugnance which was fee payment. The residents
had to pay some money like the infrastructure fee tax, loans, standing military and also pay some to
the national bank, a routine they were not used too.
These rules affected people's lives and disrupted their life style living conditions causing them to
share Thomas Jefferson's faith which clearly stated that "an untrained military force could easily
conquer them in case they did not better the training of their militia or even administration". The
major event that occurred was the forceful act of unfair fee payment people were subjected to and
how they reacted to the situation.
Jefferson's disregard for the army's supply caused a greater impact that could be further felt more
significantly as a method for the War of 1812 than the creation of the Military Training Academy.
This happened when he together with his successor refused to negotiate with the Britons on realistic
terms. By doing so, he depended on commercial sanctions that destroyed the economy and
diminished revenues.
Retaliating and unforgiving, the Jeffersonian

Essay on Falklands War
Falklands War As soon as the war ended people wondered why Britain had won and why Argentina
had lost. The conclusion made by the Americans is that it was that shifts in tactics, or weather may
have changed the result of the war, but it would seem that Britain's training and leadership did
decide the outcome. It is clear that the 25,000 men of the task force that sailed from Portsmouth in
April 1982 were one of the most experianced, and certainly best trained forces that Britain had ever
sent to war. Everyone who was sent to the Falkland's, from sailors to fighter pilots knew what his
job was and therefore carried it out in the correct way that he was trained to do. Aswell as this the

The first option was possible for the Argentines, and as the task force closed into the firing zone it
appeared as if the Argentine Navy was moving against them with Exocet firing frigates. The loss of
the General Belgrano effectively eliminated this threat, and the frigates were withdrawn and never
closed again. This left two options, to sink the carriers, submarines or the Exocet. Both of which had
been attempted previously. The Argentines had four submarines at the outbreak of the war but had
lost one when South Georgia was recaptured in April. The remaining subs faced having to get close
enough to within torpedo range of a fleet, whose objective was anti–submarine, and had the best
training and weapons to defend against this type of threat. Still, the Argentine submarines did sail
and apparently launched torpedoes, although they did no harm to the British aircraft carriers. The
Argentine submarine threat, although providing a constant problem to British generals, were
destined to remain only a cause of thought to Admiral Woodward. The launching of an exocet was
attempted on several occasions but the problem of the radar guided missiles meant

replace the existing Oberon submarine fleet. The Collins Class Submarine program demonstrated
the capacity of Australian industry to manufacture a world–class submarine. Nonetheless, the
procurement of the Collins Class Submarines has not been without criticism. The program has

This separation presented communication and data–sharing challenges. Furthermore, the new design
contained a number of technical risks, one of them was designing a submarine that would operate in
a manner and environment very different from what Kockums was accustomed to. The risk resulted
fuel system has been proven to be problematic. Swedish submarines have short patrols in calm,
relatively fresh water. When a similar design was used in the salty, open water in which Australian
submarines operate, water was sucked into the engine causing failure. Moreover, the RAN
submarines transit greater distance and are on station for months at time, which has number of
implications for fuel storage, hotel service, and other hull design features. The difference in
operation concept and environment ultimately led to some equipment and system decision during
design that caused problems with operations and supportability. While accepting that on some issues
such as noise there were significant differences between 'the contracted requirements and the Navy's
current operational requirements', McIntosh and Prescott (1999) concluded that there were serious
deficiencies in the design and manufacture of the submarines. Moreover the requirements and
RAN's expectations had changed since the specifications were established, due primarily to
advances in technology. What the 1987 contract laid down was not what the Navy wanted by 1997,

A Short Story : The Story Of Tuvalu '
THE LIFTED SPIRIT I was so excited to see my parents' homeland but sad at the same time,
because I didn't get to experience the beauty of Tuvalu with my parents' by my side. The waves and
the smell of leaking fluid coming from all directions of the ship made me vomit, and it was so hard
for me to keep it in. I had to deal with vomiting for three days straight. The feeling that was running
through my body was killing me. My stomach was aching, head felt like it was going to explode,
body was weak and my bladder was blasting every ten minutes. As the ship swayed from side to
side, I get a closer view of the waves and the dolphins pushing against the ship. As I stroll towards
the front deck, the ship slows down as we are getting closer to our destination. I see the people of
Tuvalu waving their hands. The smiles on their faces create the feeling of happiness within me,
therefore I didn't feel any sadness even though I wasn't there with my parents. The captain of the
ship walks out of the control room and waves his hands to the people of Tuvalu. The captain then
walks towards us and says, "we're nearly there". Everyone on the ship rejoices, as a result of them
being able to reunite with their families members whom they've missed. We walk off the ship and
the people begin staring at us, like they've never seen people from New Zealand before. They begin
singing songs as we go to customs and their faces light up as we also sing along with them. As

Drake And Sir Francis Drake
Francis Drake was born in Crowndale ,England to Edmund Drake in the first half of the 16th
century . His father was a priest. These are the only fact that all the scholars have agreed. When
doing my research for Francis Drake, there have been many constructions of Francis Drake life to
convey Francis Drake as a great Pirate, Admiral, and Hero; Benson conveys Francis Drake as a the
hero with no connections, a lower class upbringing in contrast to Corbett who conveys a Drake as
the ideal gentleman from a middle class upbringing Corbet conveys the background of Francis
Drake on how he became to work for Queen Elizabeth's navy. My question is which depiction of
Drake is the most accurate and Why is Francis Drake depicted differently , throughout the different
time periods since his birth? I will present the three different historiographies that depict Francis
Drake from Sir Julian Corbett, Harry Kelsey and E.F.Benson point of view. I will then state flaws
within their construction of Drake. I will also be using Sir Francis Drake : The Construction of a
Hero by Bruce Wathen, to understand the reasons for the different narration of Drake through
material culture of each period.
Benson begins his narration of Drakes boyhood by lamenting that there is no date recorded for the
birth of 'his [childhood] hero'. He presents three miniatures that were taken of Drake to figure out
the year of his birth. The one that he concludes is the most accurate to the year of his birth, is

Why British Men Enlisted in the British Army in 1914 Essay
Why British Men Enlisted in the British Army in 1914
When Arch Duke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated, Europe erupted. The Austro–Hungarian Empire
invaded Serbia; Russia sends troops to its borders with Austria and Hungary. Germany declares war
on Russia and France and marches into Belgium and Britain declares war with Germany and her
allies. Although Britain already had a well–trained professional army, it was far too small to be able
to stand a chance against the huge German army that was more than three times its size. As a result
of this Lord Kitchener immediately went on a recruiting campaign calling on all men aged between
19 and 30 to enlist in the British Army. There was a huge response, ... Show more content on

Posters were very effective and created a picture of Germans who would run their bayonets through
women and rape them.
Lord Derby had the idea of 'pals battalions', these were battalions of people who volunteered to join
the army in the same area. This scheme inspired local and civic pride, this meant that soldiers would
not just be fighting for the British Empire, but for their town or city and friend and family. This was
particularly effective as it encouraged friend to enlist at the same time, if one was left behind there
would be no one they new. It had a similar effect as 'peer pressure' – if you did not join up you
considered a coward by your friends. This worked well in North England and Scotland, where
places like Hull raised four regiments and three regiments from Liverpool went over the top of the
trenches on the first day.
Women too played a vital role in the recruitment process. The Order of the White Feather was a
group that encouraged women to hand out white feathers to men not in uniform in public as a sign
of cowardice – the white feather being a symbol a coward. This really pushed men to go as they
would not want to be seen as a coward in public. The suffragists used their considerable publicity
machine to call on men to join the army. The mothers union produced posters urging mothers to get
their sons to enlist. Some posters published by

Main Themes In The Secret Sharer By Joseph Conrad
The Secret Sharer by Joseph Conrad presents several themes throughout its composite narration of
characters and the ideas it amplifies through the novella. Amongst all the many themes that are
presented, there is one main theme that is thoroughly supported by Conrad in The Secret Sharer. The
theme supported is, the ability that a person has, to change their beliefs due to the inexperience as a
leader, self–doubt. In the beginning the Captain is an ethical individual, yet his interaction with the
murderer, along with Leggatt, reveals him as someone who is insecure, allowing the captain to make
many illogical decisions, and in the end put his crew in harms way, showing that he is unfit to
remain captain of the ship. The Captain is introduced into the novella as a young seaman, who was
chosen to be the captain of a sailing vessel on its voyage back home. The young captain displays
himself as an experienced sailor yet is filled with much self–doubt as he is the second youngest man
on the ship, and has little leadership experience, especially as a captain. The captain's self–doubt is
easily manipulated by many individuals on the boat when he first gains command. The captain's first
impression of inexperience as a leader is shown when he decides to perform anchor watch for the
first half of the night. "I felt painfully that I –a stranger–was doing something unusual when I
directed him to let all hands turn in without setting an anchor watch."(page 652) The captain

The United States ' Navy Essay
The United States of America has not always been the world superpower that it is today. The same
goes for its Navy. In the first several years of existence, the United States Navy was not a
formidable fighting force. The young nation was hesitant to invest in a navy for many reasons, one
of them being to prevent provoking the world powers of the time, France and Britain. On top of that,
navies were very expensive to build and required a significant amount of resources to maintain,
which the U.S. did not have at the time. To say that the United States Navy was ill prepared for war
would be a dramatic understatement. The U.S. had a total of fifteen ships in its entire naval fleet
compared to the might of the Royal Navy which possessed over six hundred warships. Even with
the odds stacked against the U.S., President Madison declared war on 18 JUN 1812. The lack of size
and power of the navy at the time would make it extremely difficult to satisfy the needs of the newly
founded nation.
The U.S. had enough of the British Navy impressing American sailors and seizing American
merchant ships. Even though the U.S. Navy lacked the size that British had, the Royal Navy was
stretched to its limits. Many of the British efforts were focused on the Napoleonic wars taking place
in Europe, leaving just two dozen British ships between Halifax and Bermuda. The U.S. frigates
were larger and had much more armament than those of the British giving the U.S. one more key
advantage over their

Lord Of The Flies Character Analysis
Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, is a story about a troop of boys who are on a plane out of
war–torn England. However, their plane crashes and strands them on an island without any adults.
The boys, who are anywhere from age six to age twelve, must learn to survive not only the
elements, but each other as well. By the end of the story, at least three of the boys have died, two of
which were killed knowingly by other boys on the island.
When the boys first arrive, they appoint Ralph as chief because he was holding the conch that he
blew to call the assembly. Jack wanted to be the leader because he was head boy and could sing C
sharp, but neither of those things held any meaning for the young boys. Even though a fat boy

Samneric, a set of twins (Sam and Eric), are threatened into joining Jack's clan after Ralph is run off

him and put his head on a stake. After only a few months on the island, the boys go insane and
savage. However, if girls had survived the crash and were on the island as well, it might have
changed the story. During this time (the late 1940s–50s), girls were already tasked with helping to
take care of younger siblings by the age of eight or nine. If the girls were around the same ages as
the boys on the island they would be between six and twelve years old. Because of their upbringing,
the older girls would likely immediately step in and try to take care of the younger boys and girls.
Unlike Piggy, they likely wouldn't fail to make a list of everyone on the island and keep track of all
the "youngins.". The girls would also make sure everyone ate as well as they could given that the
only foods were fruit and pig meat. One of the main conflicts in the story was the fact that quite a
few of the youngins claimed to see a beast. Ralph and Jack dealt with it by simply saying it wasn't
real and they were making it up, which really didn't make the little boys feel any better. However,
the girls would probably sleep next to them and promise to protect them, or they'd at least come up
with something better than simply saying the youngins were wrong. If they calmed

The Battle of Bunker Hill Essay
The Battle of Bunker Hill The battle of Bunker's Hill was one of the most important battles during
the Revolutionary War. On June 17, 1775, the Battle of Bunker Hill took place. Fought during the
Siege of Boston, it lent considerable encouragement to the revolutionary cause. This battle made
both sides realize that this was not going to be a matter decided on by one quick and decisive battle.
The battle of Bunker Hill was not just an unplanned, random attack on British soldiers preformed by

These were not the only incidents that caused unrest to exist between the Colonies and the British.
There had been incidents between British soldiers and colonists for some time, due mainly to the
Quartering Act. These incidents finally erupted into the Boston Massacre, an event that resulted in
colonists' deaths and more distrust. These feelings of discontent and the growing fear of an uprising
would lead the British to proceed to Lexington and Concord and destroy colonial military supplies.
This left the colonists with the feeling of hatred and total malice towards the British. Neither side
trusted the other, and had concerns that the opposition would launch an attack upon them. When the
British planned to occupy Dorchester Heights on the Boston Peninsula, the colonists became
alarmed at the build up of British troops off the coast. The colonists decided that action had to be
taken; they had to stop the threatening British movement in this territory to protect them from an
attack.
It was because of this as well as the many small skirmishes through the years, which would lead the
colonies into a confrontation with the British. The Battle of Bunker Hill started when the colonists
learned about the British plan to occupy Dorchester Heights. The colonists were unnerved by this
news. They, the Colonists

Essay on Success: You can do it!
You can do it! –SUCCESS– Success is to fulfil a goal that you have set for yourself. Achievement of
success involves five components: realisation, confidence, motivation, action and perseverance. Step
one is to realise your goal and how to achieve it. Step two is to have the confidence to take the steps
towards your goal. Step three is to find motivation to keep you on the path towards you goal. Step
four is action, the first physical step you take in the process for success. Step five is perseverance.
On the road to success, you will most definitely come to setbacks and struggles. The only way to
conquer those things and achieve your goal is to have strong perseverance. As David Brink said,

Without that fuel, you will go nowhere. Motivation can be a number of things. It could be family,
money, fame, fear of failure; anything that makes you strive for your goal. My motivations are to:
become famous, be able to live comfortably, and to be able to raise a family. I will hold onto these
things and will keep moving towards success. Nelson struggled with his motivation, "I felt
impressed with a feeling that I should never rise in my profession. My mind was staggered with the
view of the difficulties I had to surmount and the little interest [influential friends] I possessed. I
could discover no means of reaching the object of my ambition. After a long and gloomy reverie in
which I almost wished myself overboard, a sudden glow of patriotism was kindled within me and
presented my king and country as my patron. 'Well then,' I exclaimed, 'I will be a hero and confiding
in providence I will brave every danger.'" He found his motivation to be patriotism to his country to
be known as a hero. Step 4 – Action Action is the first physical step you will take in success. Action
is bringing together realisation, confidence and motivation. This is when all your planning comes
together you start actually doing the things you need to get to your goal: putting your plan into
action. I got into a group where we film rock concerts. I have also signed for a course on how to use

The War Of 1812 And The United States
The War of 1812 is the second war between the United States of America and Great Britain that ends
in a draw. Also referred to as the "Second War of Independence," the cause of this military conflict
is often believed to be a direct result of England's attempt to humiliate the United States, limit the
country's growth and impact (acts of interference towards American trade, which is a sign of
disrespect towards American independence), and acts of impressment (taking sailors off American
vessels and forcing them into providing services for the British Royal Navy). Although the ultimate
outcome of the War of 1812 results in a tie, the Americans have faced several challenges during the
presence of their second dispute with Britain. Arguably, the main reason that caused the United
States to struggle during this "Second War of Independence," is how unprepared the nation is when
it comes to fighting another series of battles.
During the War of 1812, the power of the army and navy forces in the United States of America
seems to be lacking in both its quantity and quality value of soldiers, weapons, and supplies. In
comparison to Great Britain, who, at the time, has the leading military in the world, boasting both a
powerful army and navy, the Americans appears to be at a clear disadvantage. According to primary
and secondary sources on www.napoleanseries.org, during the War of 1812, there were

America. He raises a glass of port to a safe voyage, and the whole room follows suit. The chamber

believe that something is astray with Will Turner. 30 minutes into the festivities, the captain

In 1813, the United States gained control of Lake Erie with their victory at the Battle of Lake Erie

The United States Transition From Age Of Sail
The United States Transition from "Age of Sail" to Steam and Steel Navy
William Hunt, the secretary of the Navy in 1881, once wrote: "the conditions of the Navy
imperatively demand the prompt and earnest attention of Congress. Unless some action be had in its
behalf it must soon dwindle into insignificance." Without technology advancements or change, the
Navy would soon fall apart. The "Age of Sail" lasted from about the sixteenth century through the
mid–nineteenth century. It was a time in which our nation was fighting with wooden ships stacked
with canons, and underdeveloped technology. Slowly, this started to change. As a country, the need
for change began in the mid–nineteenth century, before the Civil War. The first of these ... Show

Although it was "innovative" it was not optimally efficient, nor abundant. "In 1815, the entire
United States naval force consisted of 18 warships – the USS Independence, a 90–gun ship–of–the–
line, 5 frigates, 2 sloops–of–war, 7 brigantines and 3 schooners" (Potts). The entire U.S. Navy
consisted of eighteen warships which they soon realized was not enough and motivated them to
advance their technology.
After the War of 1812, to aid sea commerce and whaling fleet efforts that followed the whale
migration around the globe, the United States needed new ships to fight the British. The first USS
Yorktown was commissioned in 1840 and it was the most advanced ship of its time during the "Age
of Sail". It included three masts, eighteen sails, tactically placed canons, lifeboats, and anchors.
While the U.S. were launching this vessel, Great Britain was rapidly advancing their technology into
a steel and steam navy. The Napoleonic Wars left Great Britain as the most powerful naval country
in the world. No two of their rivals combined came even close to competing with the Royal Navy.
With that, the United States Navy was inspired as well as threatened by the technology advances,
and they too sought change. Time was not the only factor that was decisive on the progressions. The
need for new and more efficient methods was the driving factor. Robert Fulton, the builder of the

The Causes And Impacts Of World War II
World War II was a worldwide war that happened from 1939 to 1945. It involved the majority of the
world's countries including which eventually formed the two opposing military alliances the Allies
and the Axis. It was the largest war in history, and involved more than 100 million people from over
30 countries. The major countries threw their entire economic, industrial, and scientific capabilities
behind the war effort. World War II has had the most fatalities and injuries of any war in human
history, accumulating 50 million to 85 million fatalities, with most being civilians in the Soviet
Union and China. World War 2 had events such as the genocide of Jews orchestrated by Adolf Hitler
and his Nazi party, bombings, starvation, disease and the use of nuclear weapons on Hiroshima and
Nagasaki which was the first use of nuclear weapons in history.
During the war the royal navy had noticed that aircraft carriers were becoming the ultimate ships for
naval warfare, and that the royal navy's former naval superiority in terms of their battleships had
become irrelevant. The royal navy had noticed that battleships could no longer fulfil their roles in a
cost–effective manner. They were too big, too expensive to build and maintain, and their crews too
large. Due to this the royal navy was an early innovator in aircraft carrier design, introducing
armoured flight decks, in place of the battleships. This then meant that the royal navy focused more

Rhetorical Analysis Of Speech At The Virginia Convention
During 1775, colonists were going through something that affected them deeply. Living under
Britain's rule, they had little to no freedom. In "Speech at the Virginia Convention" Henry expresses
his view on living under Britain's rule. He encourages American men to fight against the British in
order to ensure freedom. Patrick Henry persuades his audience by showing it will be necessary to go
to battle through his powerful use of ethos, imagery and rhetorical questions. Patrick Henry
establishes credibility by showing that it will be necessary to go to battle through his use of ethos in
the text. "Should I keep back my opinions at such a time, through fear of giving offense, I should
consider myself as guilty of treason towards my country"(Henry). This explains that Patrick feels
that if he holds back in order to not offend anyone, it'll be like betraying his own country. Moreover,
Patrick Henry expresses credibility by stating "Guilty of treason towards my country, and of an act
of disloyalty toward the majesty of heaven, which I revere above all earthly kings" (Henry). He
reveals that he is guilty of treason towards his country, which shows an act of disloyalty towards
God in which he respects more than anyone. Next, Henry uses metaphors throughout the text to
convey his credibility. "I have but one lamp by which my feet are guided, and that is the lamp of
experience"(Henry). This explains that him being experienced is the only reason why he continues

Andrew Bolt's Article : French Connection : One We Cannot...
Andrew Bolt's article 'French connection is one we cannot trust' (Northern Territory News, May 2
2016, p. 13) criticises the $50 billion dollar agreement between Australia and France to construct
twelve French–designed submarines for the Royal Australian Navy in Adelaide. Bolt claims that this
agreement with France poses a risk to Australia's defence interests. His line of reasoning is that
France has proven itself in the past to be an unreliable ally. The evidence lies in France's past actions
of withholding its armaments and spare parts to nations engaged in conflicts opposed to its national
interests. Therefore, Bolt argues that the agreement should have been made between Australia and
its more reliable allies such as Japan and the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He does not explore France's defence agreements at the time or whether or not it was actually allied
in any way with those nations. Nevertheless, Bolt puts forward a fourth example in which France
'allegedly betrayed Australia' when it 'reportedly' threatened to withhold spare parts for French–built
Mirage fighter jets in 1968. He acknowledges, however, that some 'Defence sources' deny that this
ever happened. He immediately writes that it is nonetheless 'reported as fact' by the Australian
Defence Association and Royal Australian Air Force Association. Bolt makes a concerted effort here
to sway readers into believing the story by use of an appeal to authority. By leaving the defence
sources unnamed it saps their credibility when their claims are juxtaposed with that which is
reported by the two big name associations. Bolt goes on to use his 1968 example as the basis for a
false analogy. He implies that France is liable to withhold spare parts for its French–designed
submarine fleet as it previously did with its Mirage jets.
Bolt's language throughout the piece reinforces an 'us versus them' mentality in which Australia's
submarine fleet will be necessary for upcoming wars and therefore cannot be entrusted to France. In
one stunning piece of hyperbole, he implies that France's changing demographic leaves it unlikely to
support Australia in conflict with a Muslim country. Bolt writes that its Muslim minority is

World War Two
On June 18, 1812, President Madison of the United States and Congress declared war on Great
Britain. On June 25, the French emperor, Napoleon Bonaparte led his army in Europe across the
Nieman River into Russia.(1) Although these two events were thousands of kilometers apart they
were directly connected to each other. To some extent, the Americans declared war in protest against
measures that were part of Britain's effort to defeat Napoleon with the use of blockades. There are
many interesting aspects to the War of 1812, including the fact of why it even happened. Britain and

The Twelve Congress, which received Madison's war message proved to be dominated by a group of
young men known as the 'War Hawks'.(5) These men were chiefly from the west and south who
resented the injuries inflicted on the United States by Great Britain during the War for
Independence, and were seeking retribution.(6) Like many other Americans, they believed the
manifest destiny of the United States was to control all of British North America.
This American dream of major conquest of North America was made clear in a speech given by
Congressman Richard Johnston of Kentucky "I shall never die contented until I see her [Britain]
expulsion from North America, and her territories incorporated with United States."(7) Mr. Felix
Grundy concurred with Mr. Johnston by stating "I am willing to receive the Canadians as adopted
brethren;... I therefore feel anxious not only to add the Floridas to the south but the Canadas to the
north of this Empire..."(8) America now had their major objective for the war and despite objections
by New England and New York, war was declared by a slim margin on June 18,1812.
Logically this war was a serious threat to Canada, since it was only in North America that the U.S.
could hope to defeat the British. Geographically, the struggle

Rhetorical Analysis Of Patrick Henry's Speech To The...
The Road to Freedom In 1836 the American colonies were at a crossroads. With no ideas on how to
move forward, or how to break away from British control, colonists looked towards a leading figure
to guide the way. This figure came in the form of Patrick Henry, a well–known American attorney
who was willing to be the starting face of the revolution. With tensions in the colonies rising, many
were willing to rebel against the newly implanted taxes imposed by the British. In his "Speech to the
Virginia Convention", Patrick Henry shows that he is willing to do anything to break away from
English control. His strong use of persuasion and rhetoric make the Virginia Convention think about
the possibility of rebelling against the British. This spark of revolt is all that is needed to set the
revolution into motion, with it starting only ten years later. Through pathos, ethos and logos, Patrick
Henry is able to make his purpose of persuading the colonists to unite against the Great Britain clear.
One of the best ways to persuade an audience is through emotion. Henry uses pathos to appeal to
many emotions, one of the most effective being fear. When it is known that the British army is
keeping tabs on the colonists Henry writes that the British are "sent over to bind and rivet upon us
those chains...". This is meant to tell the colonists that if action is not taken soon, the British will get
the upper hand and nothing can be done. The worst thing a colonist can think to be is a slave.

Essay on The Decline of British Military Innovation
World War I was perhaps the greatest catalyst for military innovation in modern history. The speed
in which the doctrinal, technical and tactical changes were developed and implemented was
astounding. At the end of World War I, Britain was at the forefront of doctrinal and technological
innovation in the field of armor and aircraft warfare. The factors which caused Britain to lose their
innovative edge in these areas prior to World War II was the 10 year rule policy, operational attitude
of the British Army, and an emphasis on land based aviation. At the conclusion of World War I,
Britain had the largest navy in the world, a brand new Royal Air Force (RAF) and an army that had
extended its technical, tactical and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The ten–year policy was used by the British Government to continually decrease defense spending
until the policy was ended in 1932. The second factor that stifled the innovation of the British
military is the operational attitude of the military leadership. The British military failed to study the
lessons learned from World War I until 1932. This failure to study the battles of the war in a timely
manner resulted in the development of inferior doctrine and training concepts. If the lessons would
have been learned earlier than 1932, substantial changes could have been made to the British
doctrine and professional military education system prior to 1932. The structural, leadership and
cultural changes to the British Army after World War I contributed to a pervasive disinterest in
innovation. The ideas and attitudes of the military leadership remained those of the prewar army.
Those who seemed to be innovators were outcast and the leadership of the British Army did not take
their ideas seriously. Between 1923 and 1928, the British Army conducted numerous field exercises
to determine the proper use of mechanized or armored forces. Although some shortfalls were
identified in these maneuvers, the overall potential of armored forces was evident. These tests
identified the tactical advantages of firepower and maneuver of armored forces and the considerable

The Battle Of The Cruise Missile
Since man first began traversing the world's waterways, we have been battling for control and
supremacy over them. Whoever owns the sea has the upper hand in war. The outcome of war is
determined by a complex combination of factors including: strategy, tactics, training, morale,
leadership, organization, technology, weapons, and some luck. Having a slight advantage in most of
these categories, or a great superiority in one, can lead to victory. Although there isn't always a set
order of which factor is most important, it is evident that the side possessing superior weapons has
an increased chance of victory. The cruise missile is the latest in a line of technologies which
decidedly changed the conduct of maritime warfare. This technology dramatically shifted the role of
naval forces in both the land and maritime engagements, and expanded the naval battlefield to
unforeseen distances and locales. Thus, impacting the way the United States Navy has approached
strategy, tactics, and inter–service relations. Strategy
The cruise missile has allowed the United States Navy to carry out its strategies of obtaining sea
control and supremacy, and acting as a strategic deterrence; discouraging other countries from

1812 was victory for the United States. In my opinion, the decision of victory or defeat is caused by
whether the country gained good impacts or not. I think that the United States gained several
benefits through this war. They can be independent from the Great Britain and develop the own
industry. Also, the nationalism increased, and the nation might be more united. For these reasons, I
think that the result of the War of 1812 can be said the victory of the United States. The War of 1812
is less known in American history. However, I think that the War of 1812 is the one of the most
important war in he history. European countries gave a big influence to the United States. The desire
of new land, also, was one of the reasons for the war. Not only the causes, but also the aftermath had

The history of Sheffield, a city in South Yorkshire,...
The history of Sheffield, a city in South Yorkshire, England, can be traced back to the founding of a
settlement beside the River Sheaf in the second half of the 1st millennium AD, although the area has
seen human occupation since the last ice age. Following the Norman conquest of England, Sheffield
developed into a small town. By the 14th century it was noted for the production of knives, and by
1600 it had become the second main centre of cutlery production in England after London. In the
1740s the crucible steel process was improved by Sheffield resident Benjamin Huntsman, allowing a
much better production quality. At about the same time, Sheffield plate, a form of silver plating, was
invented, and the associated industries ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In 2003, Slipknot moved into The Mansion to work on the album. Initially, the band was
unproductive; lead vocalist Corey Taylor was drinking heavily. Nevertheless, they wrote more than
enough material for a new album–the band's first to incorporate more traditional, melodic song
structures, guitar solos and acoustic guitars. The album received generally positive reviews; Q called
it "a triumph". The album peaked within the top ten in album sales across eleven countries, and went
Platinum in the United States. The band also received the Grammy Award for Best Metal
Performance for the song "Before I Forget". (Full article...) Recently featured: History of Sheffield –

War Of 1812 Essay Outline
The War of 1812 The War of 1812 is the military conflict between the United States and Great
Britain, which occurred from 1812 to 18141. During the 19th century the United States rebelled
against the British rule because the British Empire restricted the American trade. The restriction
primarily came about since the British thought that it would disadvantageously affect their war with
France. Aside from this the British Empire would like to establish an Indian State located in the
Midwest so that they can retain influence over the region2, propelling the United States to engage in
a war for independence. The war transpired mainly because of the trade restrictions implemented by
the British on American ships. During the war between France and Great Britain, Napoleon ordered
a shipping blockade ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The American ships were more victorious on the sea wars while the British forces invaded land
territories with ease due to the assistance of the Great Shawnee Chief Tecumseh17. The equation of

Both parties were embroiled in gaining an upper hand over the other; hence lives were lost in the
process to establish domination on the part of the British and to establish independence from the
Colony for the Americans.
Although the War of 1812 is considered a minor struggle between the United States and Great
Britain it was considered a major crossroads for Canada and the Native Americans (Indians) to have
their own respective independence from any foreign rule. The United States view the War of 1812 as
a "second war for independence"18, hence the United States has to undergo many struggles in the
past in order to be a world power at

The Battle of Coral Sea Essay The Battle of Coral Sea was the first major sea battle between allied fleet forces, including those of the United States and Australian Navies, and the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) during World War II. Pivotal in terms of allied naval fleet operations during the war, the Battle of Coral Sea was also the first naval battle that featured opposing air craft carriers in close proximity to each other, resulting in air battles initiated by sea, rather than from traditional land bases. The following provides relevant details. The plan calling for expansion of Japanese forces throughout the Pacific theater was developed by the IJN and Japanese Army. As detailed by Stille, "This called for a series of sequenced operations designed to bring key ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This had the effect of reducing the contingent of allied aircraft carriers in the Pacific by half. Hence, when the Japanese launched their next offensive in the Southern Pacific, the IJN fleet would now be augmented with carrier support, while U.S Naval forces suffered from a reduction in the same support vital to their mission of defending a major Japanese offensive (Stille 8). Prior to the upcoming Coral Sea battle, a number of Japanese military messages had been intercepted by the U.S. Navy signals intelligence unit. The first, dated March 28, 1942, was encoded as stating "The objective of MO will be first to restrict the enemy fleet movements and will be accomplished by means of attacks on the north coast of Australia." ("Battle of the Coral Sea") Subsequent messages were intercepted that provided allied forces with updated details concerning IJN fleet progress, as well as elements of IJN plans that included battleship and carrier logistics. This resulted in the U.S. Navy's deployment of a cotillion of numerous warships and support craft, and also the carriers Lexington and Yorktown ("Battle of the Coral Seas"). In the upcoming battle, these ships would do battle against a superior IJN force comprised of far more battleships, submarines and support craft, as well as aircraft carriers. For those of you who know me now, the beginning of my tale may be difficult to believe because I was a much different person all those years ago. If you are a total stranger to myself and my cause, you will learn the best ways of contacting the resistance and getting this to their leader if I am gone. All of these events were witnessed by me and added to by others that were there with me. I will begin my story on the day that my life changed forever, the day on which I nearly ... Now for those of you who know nothing of my past, it may come as a surprise to you that I was very passive in my youth. I never acted first, I always reacted to my surroundings but it all changed with The Paradise. As I stood behind that door fearing for my life, I came to the conclusion that I could die that day, that everything I had ever known would end and I would be forced into whatever came next. "They're trying to board us Captain, what do we do?" a crew member near the door asked. Before the captain responded, a voice carried clearly from the other ship. "We are the King's men, prepare to be boarded," someone from the privateer said. At this I naively believed that we were all safe. I should have known better but I blame my upbringing that I was not able to anticipate what would happen next. I felt a dull thud reverberate along the wooden floor of the door frame. The four men that came aboard first were all armed with crossbows slung across their backs and swords at their belts. They were followed by a man in armor who had only a sword. The Collins Class is the first submarine to be made in Australia and is the most advanced of its time due to its software architecture. Deep Trouble addresses various issues that were faced during the design and development stages of the Collins Class project. This report will focus on the interrelationship between the three PMBOK knowledge areas of scope, procurement and quality management and the impact each had on the final project. The Collins Class submarine was prone to excessive noise signatures whilst travelling at speed and lacked the operational capability to enter conflict situations due to the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This report will focus on the interrelationship between the three PMBOK knowledge areas of scope, procurement and quality management and the impact each had on the final project. DESIGN SELECTION The two finalists for the submarine design were the German company HDW–IKL and to the surprise of many, the Swedish company, Kockums. Deep Trouble identifies that the selection process to choose the Collins Class Submarine was badly flawed and it was believed by many that the Swedish were nothing more than a 'straw man' and had no real chance of winning the competition. Prior to sitting in front of two selection committees to defend their designs, the Germans were given a list of eight questions that they would be asked. This information was leaked to the Germans by a member of the submarine project team with the belief that their submarine design was the one Australia should purchase. Following a change in government, a high level Australian Council Trades Union (ACTU) government delegation visited Europe. Upon its return an industrial blueprint was released called 'Australia Reconstructed' which made special mention of the Swedish company Kockums for their pioneering organisational ability. The Battle of Calabria, (known to the Italian Navy as the Battle of Punta Stilo) was a naval battle during the Battle of the Mediterranean in World War II. It was fought between the Italian Royal Navy (Regia Marina) and the British Royal Navy and the Royal Australian Navy. The battle occurred 30 miles to the east of Punta Stilo, the "toe" of Italy (Calabria), on 9 July 1940. 11 When World War II opened, it was much to the surprise of the Italian forces who, like many in Europe, did not expect conflict until 1941 at the earliest. At the time their forces in Libya were ill– equipped for war, and the Italian fleet was forced to start large supply operations in order to bring them up to fighting condition.

  • 12. The Revolutionary War And The Declaration Of Independence Decades following the Revolutionary War and the Declaration of Independence, America continued to face challenges in their young country. Tensions with the British, as well as Native Americans, led to more struggles for America. The British failed to recognize the United States of America as a separate and free country, and by enlisting the help of frustrated Native Americans they continued to be a sore within America. They believed they had rights to some parts of land in western Florida, they joined forces with Native Americans when Americans decide to move westward, and worst of all they continued to impress Americans onto British ships because of problems with trade. Tensions with the British continued to rise and a factor for the War of 1812 was the problem with British West Florida. The War Hawks, who were a group of men who had a strong hatred towards the British, were irate with the British over territorial issues. Among these men were John C. Calhoun and Henry Clay, who "brimmed with the cocky belligerence of youth and were super– nationalists" (Conlin 217). These men were wanting to conquer Canada, and the idea of doing so was not implausible. Great Britain had an army in Canada, but it had slowly been reduced and Americans thought it would be a perfect time to try and conquer the land. However, America unfortunately was not able to conquer the lands in Canada, and the land remained the property of the British. There were also territorial issues with western ... • 14. William Golding 's Lord Of The Flies Research Paper: Lord of the Flies William Golding, the author of Lord of The Flies, included adults for only a brief time throughout the novel, playing only a minor role at the end. The absence of adults exemplifies how children require the structure and guidance that only parents can provide, symbolically, how nations newly freed from the British Empire's control would be better off under English colonial power to survive and maintain order before deteriorating into anarchy. The adults of the novel can be seen as the mother nation, England, and the British schoolboys are England's 'children', the colonies. The British people believe that without the help of England, the independent colonies will eventually fall into chaos and savagery and are in need to be rescued by England. We see this when the boys chose to hunt Ralph, but are saved by the "white–coat" British Naval Officer who shows them their wrongs and corrects their savage–ways. In fact, Lord of the Flies published in 1954; only seven years after England lost its control over its "crown jewel", also known as India. Although the idea of granting independence to a colony was not new, the possibility of losing India was outrageous, it is one of the wealthiest in terms of minerals, gems, and spices. • 16. Battle Of Crete : The Battle For Crete Battle for Crete Introduction The battle of Crete occurred due to various causes and consequences including the enormous demand on the island by both the allies and the Axis. The battle began just after dawn on 20 May 1941. The air above was filled with parachutes as thousands of trained elite German Para troops began to drop from the skies. This was the beginning of the Battle for Crete. For 12 intense days the allies, New Zealanders, British, Australian and Greek troops, assisted by Cretan civilians, tried to fend off a huge airborne attack by the Axis. They were almost successful. Many New Zealanders made it off Crete, but thousands were left behind. The Cretans and the New Zealanders still remember this significant battle in New Zealand history. Causes of the Battle for Crete Crete's strategic importance The most important cause of the battle of Crete was the importance of Crete along with king George of Greece and his entourage. The retreat from Greece involved retreating from the Germans and Italians who were pursuing the allies, the allies then retreated to the island of Crete which was defendable with the right amount of soldiers. The island of Crete needed to be defended from the axis just as much as the axis wanted the island. The island of Crete was wanted by the allies as the island contained two airfields which allowed the short ranged planes that were used during world war 2 to reach the Romanian oilfields and bomb them successfully. Hickey 2012, an academic journal, talks about the military history where by people were subjected to a difficult and different lifestyle than the one they were used too at that time. The journal explains in details how James Madison and other citizens in the state experienced harsh situations brought upon them by the Republican repugnance which was fee payment. The residents had to pay some money like the infrastructure fee tax, loans, standing military and also pay some to the national bank, a routine they were not used too. These rules affected people's lives and disrupted their life style living conditions causing them to share Thomas Jefferson's faith which clearly stated that "an untrained military force could easily conquer them in case they did not better the training of their militia or even administration". The major event that occurred was the forceful act of unfair fee payment people were subjected to and how they reacted to the situation. Jefferson's disregard for the army's supply caused a greater impact that could be further felt more significantly as a method for the War of 1812 than the creation of the Military Training Academy. This happened when he together with his successor refused to negotiate with the Britons on realistic terms. By doing so, he depended on commercial sanctions that destroyed the economy and diminished revenues. Retaliating and unforgiving, the Jeffersonian ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 20. Essay on Falklands War Falklands War As soon as the war ended people wondered why Britain had won and why Argentina had lost. The conclusion made by the Americans is that it was that shifts in tactics, or weather may have changed the result of the war, but it would seem that Britain's training and leadership did decide the outcome. It is clear that the 25,000 men of the task force that sailed from Portsmouth in April 1982 were one of the most experianced, and certainly best trained forces that Britain had ever sent to war. Everyone who was sent to the Falkland's, from sailors to fighter pilots knew what his job was and therefore carried it out in the correct way that he was trained to do. Aswell as this the Brits ... The first option was possible for the Argentines, and as the task force closed into the firing zone it appeared as if the Argentine Navy was moving against them with Exocet firing frigates. The loss of the General Belgrano effectively eliminated this threat, and the frigates were withdrawn and never closed again. This left two options, to sink the carriers, submarines or the Exocet. Both of which had been attempted previously. The Argentines had four submarines at the outbreak of the war but had lost one when South Georgia was recaptured in April. The remaining subs faced having to get close enough to within torpedo range of a fleet, whose objective was anti–submarine, and had the best training and weapons to defend against this type of threat. Still, the Argentine submarines did sail and apparently launched torpedoes, although they did no harm to the British aircraft carriers. The Argentine submarine threat, although providing a constant problem to British generals, were destined to remain only a cause of thought to Admiral Woodward. It was devised to replace the existing Oberon submarine fleet. The Collins Class Submarine program demonstrated the capacity of Australian industry to manufacture a world–class submarine. Nonetheless, the procurement of the Collins Class Submarines has not been without criticism. The program has experienced various project management issues that ultimately lead to increased costs and time delays. This report will address these issues along with traditional Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and non–traditional KPIs and their interrelationships. 1.0 Introduction The ... Furthermore, the new design contained a number of technical risks, one of them was designing a submarine that would operate in a manner and environment very different from what Kockums was accustomed to. The risk resulted fuel system has been proven to be problematic. Swedish submarines have short patrols in calm, relatively fresh water. When a similar design was used in the salty, open water in which Australian submarines operate, water was sucked into the engine causing failure. Moreover, the RAN submarines transit greater distance and are on station for months at time, which has number of implications for fuel storage, hotel service, and other hull design features. The difference in operation concept and environment ultimately led to some equipment and system decision during design that caused problems with operations and supportability. While accepting that on some issues such as noise there were significant differences between 'the contracted requirements and the Navy's current operational requirements', McIntosh and Prescott (1999) concluded that there were serious deficiencies in the design and manufacture of the submarines. Moreover the requirements and RAN's expectations had changed since the specifications were established, due primarily to advances in technology. The feeling that was running through my body was killing me. My stomach was aching, head felt like it was going to explode, body was weak and my bladder was blasting every ten minutes. As the ship swayed from side to side, I get a closer view of the waves and the dolphins pushing against the ship. As I stroll towards the front deck, the ship slows down as we are getting closer to our destination. I see the people of Tuvalu waving their hands. The smiles on their faces create the feeling of happiness within me, therefore I didn't feel any sadness even though I wasn't there with my parents. The captain of the ship walks out of the control room and waves his hands to the people of Tuvalu. The captain then walks towards us and says, "we're nearly there". These are the only fact that all the scholars have agreed. When doing my research for Francis Drake, there have been many constructions of Francis Drake life to convey Francis Drake as a great Pirate, Admiral, and Hero; Benson conveys Francis Drake as a the hero with no connections, a lower class upbringing in contrast to Corbett who conveys a Drake as the ideal gentleman from a middle class upbringing Corbet conveys the background of Francis Drake on how he became to work for Queen Elizabeth's navy. My question is which depiction of Drake is the most accurate and Why is Francis Drake depicted differently , throughout the different time periods since his birth? I will present the three different historiographies that depict Francis Drake from Sir Julian Corbett, Harry Kelsey and E.F.Benson point of view. I will then state flaws within their construction of Drake. I will also be using Sir Francis Drake : The Construction of a Hero by Bruce Wathen, to understand the reasons for the different narration of Drake through material culture of each period. Benson begins his narration of Drakes boyhood by lamenting that there is no date recorded for the birth of 'his [childhood] hero'. He presents three miniatures that were taken of Drake to figure out the year of his birth. The one that he concludes is the most accurate to the year of his birth, is ... The Austro–Hungarian Empire invaded Serbia; Russia sends troops to its borders with Austria and Hungary. Germany declares war on Russia and France and marches into Belgium and Britain declares war with Germany and her allies. Although Britain already had a well–trained professional army, it was far too small to be able to stand a chance against the huge German army that was more than three times its size. As a result of this Lord Kitchener immediately went on a recruiting campaign calling on all men aged between 19 and 30 to enlist in the British Army. There was a huge response, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Posters were very effective and created a picture of Germans who would run their bayonets through women and rape them. Lord Derby had the idea of 'pals battalions', these were battalions of people who volunteered to join the army in the same area. This scheme inspired local and civic pride, this meant that soldiers would not just be fighting for the British Empire, but for their town or city and friend and family. This was particularly effective as it encouraged friend to enlist at the same time, if one was left behind there would be no one they new. It had a similar effect as 'peer pressure' – if you did not join up you considered a coward by your friends. This worked well in North England and Scotland, where places like Hull raised four regiments and three regiments from Liverpool went over the top of the trenches on the first day. Women too played a vital role in the recruitment process. The Order of the White Feather was a group that encouraged women to hand out white feathers to men not in uniform in public as a sign of cowardice – the white feather being a symbol a coward. This really pushed men to go as they would not want to be seen as a coward in public. The suffragists used their considerable publicity machine to call on men to join the army. Main Themes In The Secret Sharer By Joseph Conrad The Secret Sharer by Joseph Conrad presents several themes throughout its composite narration of characters and the ideas it amplifies through the novella. Amongst all the many themes that are presented, there is one main theme that is thoroughly supported by Conrad in The Secret Sharer. The theme supported is, the ability that a person has, to change their beliefs due to the inexperience as a leader, self–doubt. In the beginning the Captain is an ethical individual, yet his interaction with the murderer, along with Leggatt, reveals him as someone who is insecure, allowing the captain to make many illogical decisions, and in the end put his crew in harms way, showing that he is unfit to remain captain of the ship. The Captain is introduced into the novella as a young seaman, who was chosen to be the captain of a sailing vessel on its voyage back home. The young captain displays himself as an experienced sailor yet is filled with much self–doubt as he is the second youngest man on the ship, and has little leadership experience, especially as a captain. The captain's self–doubt is easily manipulated by many individuals on the boat when he first gains command. The captain's first impression of inexperience as a leader is shown when he decides to perform anchor watch for the first half of the night. "I felt painfully that I –a stranger–was doing something unusual when I directed him to let all hands turn in without setting an anchor watch."(page 652) The captain ... • 32. The United States ' Navy Essay The United States of America has not always been the world superpower that it is today. The same goes for its Navy. In the first several years of existence, the United States Navy was not a formidable fighting force. The young nation was hesitant to invest in a navy for many reasons, one of them being to prevent provoking the world powers of the time, France and Britain. On top of that, navies were very expensive to build and required a significant amount of resources to maintain, which the U.S. did not have at the time. To say that the United States Navy was ill prepared for war would be a dramatic understatement. The U.S. had a total of fifteen ships in its entire naval fleet compared to the might of the Royal Navy which possessed over six hundred warships. Even with the odds stacked against the U.S., President Madison declared war on 18 JUN 1812. The lack of size and power of the navy at the time would make it extremely difficult to satisfy the needs of the newly founded nation. The U.S. had enough of the British Navy impressing American sailors and seizing American merchant ships. Even though the U.S. Navy lacked the size that British had, the Royal Navy was stretched to its limits. Many of the British efforts were focused on the Napoleonic wars taking place in Europe, leaving just two dozen British ships between Halifax and Bermuda. The U.S. frigates were larger and had much more armament than those of the British giving the U.S. one more key advantage over their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

However, their plane crashes and strands them on an island without any adults. The boys, who are anywhere from age six to age twelve, must learn to survive not only the elements, but each other as well. By the end of the story, at least three of the boys have died, two of which were killed knowingly by other boys on the island. However, if girls had survived the crash and were on the island as well, it might have changed the story. During this time (the late 1940s–50s), girls were already tasked with helping to take care of younger siblings by the age of eight or nine. If the girls were around the same ages as the boys on the island they would be between six and twelve years old. Because of their upbringing, the older girls would likely immediately step in and try to take care of the younger boys and girls. Unlike Piggy, they likely wouldn't fail to make a list of everyone on the island and keep track of all the "youngins.". The girls would also make sure everyone ate as well as they could given that the only foods were fruit and pig meat. One of the main conflicts in the story was the fact that quite a few of the youngins claimed to see a beast. Ralph and Jack dealt with it by simply saying it wasn't real and they were making it up, which really didn't make the little boys feel any better. However, the girls would probably sleep next to them and promise to protect them, or they'd at least come up with something better than simply saying the youngins were wrong. If they calmed ... On June 17, 1775, the Battle of Bunker Hill took place. Fought during the Siege of Boston, it lent considerable encouragement to the revolutionary cause. This battle made both sides realize that this was not going to be a matter decided on by one quick and decisive battle. The battle of Bunker Hill was not just an unplanned, random attack on British soldiers preformed by a few crazed colonists. These feelings of discontent and the growing fear of an uprising would lead the British to proceed to Lexington and Concord and destroy colonial military supplies. This left the colonists with the feeling of hatred and total malice towards the British. Neither side trusted the other, and had concerns that the opposition would launch an attack upon them. When the British planned to occupy Dorchester Heights on the Boston Peninsula, the colonists became alarmed at the build up of British troops off the coast. The colonists decided that action had to be taken; they had to stop the threatening British movement in this territory to protect them from an attack. It was because of this as well as the many small skirmishes through the years, which would lead the colonies into a confrontation with the British. Also referred to as the "Second War of Independence," the cause of this military conflict is often believed to be a direct result of England's attempt to humiliate the United States, limit the country's growth and impact (acts of interference towards American trade, which is a sign of disrespect towards American independence), and acts of impressment (taking sailors off American vessels and forcing them into providing services for the British Royal Navy). Although the ultimate outcome of the War of 1812 results in a tie, the Americans have faced several challenges during the presence of their second dispute with Britain. Arguably, the main reason that caused the United States to struggle during this "Second War of Independence," is how unprepared the nation is when it comes to fighting another series of battles. During the War of 1812, the power of the army and navy forces in the United States of America seems to be lacking in both its quantity and quality value of soldiers, weapons, and supplies. In comparison to Great Britain, who, at the time, has the leading military in the world, boasting both a powerful army and navy, the Americans appears to be at a clear disadvantage. According to primary and secondary sources on www.napoleanseries.org, during the War of 1812, there were approximately 250,000 soldiers in the British Army and approximately 500 ... • 48. The Plight Of The RMS Lusitania Summary The Plight of the RMS Lusitania It is an overcast evening, yet sunlight pours through a hole in the layers upon layers of clouds. There is a small party on–board the RMS Lusitania, and the Cunard Line's captain assigned for the vessel, William Turner, is standing in uniform, facing towards America. He raises a glass of port to a safe voyage, and the whole room follows suit. The chamber orchestra begins to play a fast–paced, lighthearted tune. You are a war correspondent, and you believe that something is astray with Will Turner. 30 minutes into the festivities, the captain disappears. Nobody notices but you, of course, because you vowed not to drink a drop of spirit in your life at 12 years, and have held true to that promise for 24 years running. You can't help but notice, however, that he left quite abruptly, in a queer manner, and without pretense. Prior to this, he was nervous, checking his pocket watch frequently. You didn't suspect anything, but stayed wary. He returned quickly, and in good time, called off the ceremonies. You resign to your small room on the 2nd highest deck, hoping to catch some sleep, for the next day of the trip is just as strenuous and arduous as the past one. Suddenly, you feel a jolt and the door hits the wall. Nobody is there but an awfully conveniently timed steward, who checks if all the 1st class passengers are unharmed. Annoyed and perplexed, you walk briskly to the porthole, and catch a glimpse of a laundry basket being seemingly ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The United States Transition From Age Of Sail The United States Transition from "Age of Sail" to Steam and Steel Navy William Hunt, the secretary of the Navy in 1881, once wrote: "the conditions of the Navy imperatively demand the prompt and earnest attention of Congress. Unless some action be had in its behalf it must soon dwindle into insignificance." Without technology advancements or change, the Navy would soon fall apart. The "Age of Sail" lasted from about the sixteenth century through the mid–nineteenth century. It was a time in which our nation was fighting with wooden ships stacked with canons, and underdeveloped technology. Slowly, this started to change. The entire U.S. Navy consisted of eighteen warships which they soon realized was not enough and motivated them to advance their technology. After the War of 1812, to aid sea commerce and whaling fleet efforts that followed the whale migration around the globe, the United States needed new ships to fight the British. The first USS Yorktown was commissioned in 1840 and it was the most advanced ship of its time during the "Age of Sail". It included three masts, eighteen sails, tactically placed canons, lifeboats, and anchors. While the U.S. were launching this vessel, Great Britain was rapidly advancing their technology into a steel and steam navy. The Napoleonic Wars left Great Britain as the most powerful naval country in the world. No two of their rivals combined came even close to competing with the Royal Navy. With that, the United States Navy was inspired as well as threatened by the technology advances, and they too sought change. Time was not the only factor that was decisive on the progressions. It involved the majority of the world's countries including which eventually formed the two opposing military alliances the Allies and the Axis. It was the largest war in history, and involved more than 100 million people from over 30 countries. The major countries threw their entire economic, industrial, and scientific capabilities behind the war effort. World War II has had the most fatalities and injuries of any war in human history, accumulating 50 million to 85 million fatalities, with most being civilians in the Soviet Union and China. World War 2 had events such as the genocide of Jews orchestrated by Adolf Hitler and his Nazi party, bombings, starvation, disease and the use of nuclear weapons on Hiroshima and Nagasaki which was the first use of nuclear weapons in history. During the war the royal navy had noticed that aircraft carriers were becoming the ultimate ships for naval warfare, and that the royal navy's former naval superiority in terms of their battleships had become irrelevant. The royal navy had noticed that battleships could no longer fulfil their roles in a cost–effective manner. They were too big, too expensive to build and maintain, and their crews too large. Due to this the royal navy was an early innovator in aircraft carrier design, introducing armoured flight decks, in place of the battleships. Living under Britain's rule, they had little to no freedom. In "Speech at the Virginia Convention" Henry expresses his view on living under Britain's rule. He encourages American men to fight against the British in order to ensure freedom. Patrick Henry persuades his audience by showing it will be necessary to go to battle through his powerful use of ethos, imagery and rhetorical questions. Patrick Henry establishes credibility by showing that it will be necessary to go to battle through his use of ethos in the text. "Should I keep back my opinions at such a time, through fear of giving offense, I should consider myself as guilty of treason towards my country"(Henry). This explains that Patrick feels that if he holds back in order to not offend anyone, it'll be like betraying his own country. Moreover, Patrick Henry expresses credibility by stating "Guilty of treason towards my country, and of an act of disloyalty toward the majesty of heaven, which I revere above all earthly kings" (Henry). He reveals that he is guilty of treason towards his country, which shows an act of disloyalty towards God in which he respects more than anyone. Next, Henry uses metaphors throughout the text to convey his credibility. "I have but one lamp by which my feet are guided, and that is the lamp of experience"(Henry). This explains that him being experienced is the only reason why he continues to keep fighting and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Andrew Bolt's article 'French connection is one we cannot trust' (Northern Territory News, May 2 2016, p. 13) criticises the $50 billion dollar agreement between Australia and France to construct twelve French–designed submarines for the Royal Australian Navy in Adelaide. Bolt claims that this agreement with France poses a risk to Australia's defence interests. His line of reasoning is that France has proven itself in the past to be an unreliable ally. The evidence lies in France's past actions of withholding its armaments and spare parts to nations engaged in conflicts opposed to its national interests. Therefore, Bolt argues that the agreement should have been made between Australia and its more reliable allies such as Japan and the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He does not explore France's defence agreements at the time or whether or not it was actually allied in any way with those nations. Nevertheless, Bolt puts forward a fourth example in which France 'allegedly betrayed Australia' when it 'reportedly' threatened to withhold spare parts for French–built Mirage fighter jets in 1968. He acknowledges, however, that some 'Defence sources' deny that this ever happened. He immediately writes that it is nonetheless 'reported as fact' by the Australian Defence Association and Royal Australian Air Force Association. Bolt makes a concerted effort here to sway readers into believing the story by use of an appeal to authority. By leaving the defence sources unnamed it saps their credibility when their claims are juxtaposed with that which is reported by the two big name associations. Bolt goes on to use his 1968 example as the basis for a false analogy. He implies that France is liable to withhold spare parts for its French–designed submarine fleet as it previously did with its Mirage jets. Bolt's language throughout the piece reinforces an 'us versus them' mentality in which Australia's submarine fleet will be necessary for upcoming wars and therefore cannot be entrusted to France. In one stunning piece of hyperbole, he implies that France's changing demographic leaves it unlikely to support Australia in conflict with a Muslim country. On June 25, the French emperor, Napoleon Bonaparte led his army in Europe across the Nieman River into Russia.(1) Although these two events were thousands of kilometers apart they were directly connected to each other. To some extent, the Americans declared war in protest against measures that were part of Britain's effort to defeat Napoleon with the use of blockades. The Twelve Congress, which received Madison's war message proved to be dominated by a group of young men known as the 'War Hawks'.(5) These men were chiefly from the west and south who resented the injuries inflicted on the United States by Great Britain during the War for Independence, and were seeking retribution.(6) Like many other Americans, they believed the manifest destiny of the United States was to control all of British North America. This American dream of major conquest of North America was made clear in a speech given by Congressman Richard Johnston of Kentucky "I shall never die contented until I see her [Britain] expulsion from North America, and her territories incorporated with United States."(7) Mr. Felix Grundy concurred with Mr. Johnston by stating "I am willing to receive the Canadians as adopted brethren;... I therefore feel anxious not only to add the Floridas to the south but the Canadas to the north of this Empire..."(8) America now had their major objective for the war and despite objections by New England and New York, war was declared by a slim margin on June 18,1812. • 66. Rhetorical Analysis Of Patrick Henry's Speech To The... The Road to Freedom In 1836 the American colonies were at a crossroads. With no ideas on how to move forward, or how to break away from British control, colonists looked towards a leading figure to guide the way. This figure came in the form of Patrick Henry, a well–known American attorney who was willing to be the starting face of the revolution. With tensions in the colonies rising, many were willing to rebel against the newly implanted taxes imposed by the British. In his "Speech to the Virginia Convention", Patrick Henry shows that he is willing to do anything to break away from English control. His strong use of persuasion and rhetoric make the Virginia Convention think about the possibility of rebelling against the British. This spark of revolt is all that is needed to set the revolution into motion, with it starting only ten years later. Through pathos, ethos and logos, Patrick Henry is able to make his purpose of persuading the colonists to unite against the Great Britain clear. One of the best ways to persuade an audience is through emotion. Henry uses pathos to appeal to many emotions, one of the most effective being fear. When it is known that the British army is keeping tabs on the colonists Henry writes that the British are "sent over to bind and rivet upon us those chains...". This is meant to tell the colonists that if action is not taken soon, the British will get the upper hand and nothing can be done. The worst thing a colonist can think to be is a slave. ... The speed in which the doctrinal, technical and tactical changes were developed and implemented was astounding. At the end of World War I, Britain was at the forefront of doctrinal and technological innovation in the field of armor and aircraft warfare. The factors which caused Britain to lose their innovative edge in these areas prior to World War II was the 10 year rule policy, operational attitude of the British Army, and an emphasis on land based aviation. At the conclusion of World War I, Britain had the largest navy in the world, a brand new Royal Air Force (RAF) and an army that had extended its technical, tactical and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The ten–year policy was used by the British Government to continually decrease defense spending until the policy was ended in 1932. The second factor that stifled the innovation of the British military is the operational attitude of the military leadership. The British military failed to study the lessons learned from World War I until 1932. This failure to study the battles of the war in a timely manner resulted in the development of inferior doctrine and training concepts. If the lessons would have been learned earlier than 1932, substantial changes could have been made to the British doctrine and professional military education system prior to 1932. The structural, leadership and cultural changes to the British Army after World War I contributed to a pervasive disinterest in innovation. The ideas and attitudes of the military leadership remained those of the prewar army. Those who seemed to be innovators were outcast and the leadership of the British Army did not take their ideas seriously. Between 1923 and 1928, the British Army conducted numerous field exercises to determine the proper use of mechanized or armored forces. Although some shortfalls were identified in these maneuvers, the overall potential of armored forces was evident. Whoever owns the sea has the upper hand in war. The outcome of war is determined by a complex combination of factors including: strategy, tactics, training, morale, leadership, organization, technology, weapons, and some luck. Having a slight advantage in most of these categories, or a great superiority in one, can lead to victory. Although there isn't always a set order of which factor is most important, it is evident that the side possessing superior weapons has an increased chance of victory. The cruise missile is the latest in a line of technologies which decidedly changed the conduct of maritime warfare. This technology dramatically shifted the role of naval forces in both the land and maritime engagements, and expanded the naval battlefield to unforeseen distances and locales. During the 19th century the United States rebelled against the British rule because the British Empire restricted the American trade. The restriction primarily came about since the British thought that it would disadvantageously affect their war with France. Aside from this the British Empire would like to establish an Indian State located in the Midwest so that they can retain influence over the region2, propelling the United States to engage in a war for independence. The war transpired mainly because of the trade restrictions implemented by the British on American ships. During the war between France and Great Britain, Napoleon ordered a shipping blockade ...
