Psychological Effects Of Materialism And Work On Happiness...
Psychological Effects of Materialism and Work on Happiness by Matt Brundage talks about how happiness for many is the elusive butterfly. However
the phrase Wealth does not ensure happiness is deptively simple but is unfortunately not heeded by many in our society. What makes one happy is hard
to define because it is transient and differs from person to person. Unhappiness unfortunately generates a need for material possessions and more
wealth. For this reason, unhappiness and materialism reinforce each other; materialism breeds unhappiness and vice versa. However Business and the
consumerism mindset have helped to shift the source of true happiness from intangible entities such as relationships, faith, and security to material
goods. Furthermore,

Definition Essay: Happiness Is A State Of Mind
Happiness is a state of mind which takes control of a person's emotions depending on the occasion one is experiencing or the situation one is involved
in. According to Merriam–Webster, the definition of happiness is a state of well–being and contentment. As well as, a pleasurable or satisfying
experience. Which in my opinion can be accomplished by assets acquired during periods of time. Money, jobs, and relationships are all examples of
fulfillments that affect an individual's way of thinking. Happiness is expressed differently depending on the kind of mood or stage in life an individual
is experiencing. If a person feels tired or sad the happy state of mind is never going to occur. No person will ever feel happy if all they're going ... Show

Some people love their job and other people hate theirs. If an individual works in the strawberry fields sun up till sun down their state of mind will
always be misery. Having to wake up every day at five in the morning to prepare lunch and to get ready to go to work will not put a smile on their face.
Field workers never brag about how great their job is and that is because their job sucks. A person's job plays a huge role in whether an individual
can express happiness or not. I can personally relate to field workers because I was a field worker myself. Growing up in Santa Maria, California
and coming from a Hispanic background family automatically made me an eligible candidate to work in the agriculture industry. Every day that I
worked in the strawberry fields I felt nothing but pain. I was never in the state of mind of feeling happy due to my depressed state of well–being. I
knew my following day was going to be as terrible as my last. My first days were the toughest. I would get home from work and simply shower,
eat, and sleep. I would fall asleep right away due to my unbearable back pain. There were days where I tried to obligate my state of mind to feel
happy, but it simply didn't work. I believe that the happiness state of mind can only be obtained if you're going through peaceful and enjoyable times.
One can't simply just make happiness

What Does Hard Work Mean To You Essay
When I was only 10 years old, in order to achieve the ultimate happiness, I could want, I would look to others. At only ten years old, I enjoyed when
others would fill my happiness with either gifts or coming over to play. Yet, today my life has sort of slowly slipped away from that. I feel and see
happiness when I work to improve myself, put myself in a position to impact others, and to work hardest to create opportunities to give others a smile.
My mother and father use to tirelessly attempt to motivate me to get up in the morning for school and to get ready to play for my sports team that day.
On the other hand, their hard work and efforts to mold me into a hard–working individual paid off. I know to find happiness in seeing myself improve.
Whether it be going to the gym and working out for an hour and meeting other people while exercising. In working to upgrade my body to a better
status, I find others on the same track and working towards the same goals. It is inspiring and is addicting to work with other people to make
ourselves better. The same can be said for work. It is absolutely grueling to have to trudge to work every day. However, I have been able to connect
with others, work through adversity and the grueling tasks of the day. It is the memories of going through hard work and achieving results for
yourself that we always remember. When going through the journey of trying to be better, there will be traps along the way to stop us. But by
opening to colleagues and others, it only opens different doors to potential. My father was in the Navy for over 28 years and has been engaged in
several positions of high stress and responsibility. But even on bad days, and nights where he came home late looking defeated. He still managed to
put on a smile for our family, and if he could not, he would step out, take a deep breath and come in. It can be hard to hold happiness. But my father
proved to me that happiness can certainly be worked for, and once the priority of being happy is to sustain the well–being of others as well, it becomes
too easy.
It all starts with being in the right place, by forcing yourself to be able to only be able to create happiness. This means, surrounding myself with a

C. S. Lewis Pursuit Of Happiness
Defining happiness can be very difficult. Everyone has their own perspective of happiness. When speaking about your own perspective it could crash
into another's. Trying to find which one makes the most sense is complicated.
Happiness in the United States is first claimed by the Founding Fathers. After a miserable relationship with Great Britain and King George, the
Americans took a stand. In that stand they claimed that all men are created equally and we have the right to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit ofHappiness.
C.S Lewis questions how far the right of the Pursuit of Happiness is actually meant to go. He believes we do not have the right to happiness. Lewis is
against human urges. He does not like them and does not believe we get to back ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She begins with stating that money does not and cannot fill a person's basic psychological needs (Rubin 295). Rubin goes on to claim that we do
take daily things, like air conditioning and a car, for granted and we do not know how good we have something until it is gone. She does offer a
solution to our problem; which is spend money wisely. As long as we know how to use and spend money we can be happy. Rubin brings out the topic
of spending out. This means that when we do things or in this case buy things, do not think about the return (Rubin 306). Another idea she mentioned
was a indulging in a modest money splurge. A money splurge used on health, relationships, work, etc. can make us

Autotelic Theory Of Happiness Analysis
Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi observes several theories of happiness which ranged from materialistic happiness to the self–contentment practices. He stated
that being wealthy or having all the facilities don't make you happy. Even forcing your body to become happy by practicing different spiritual rituals,
yoga or drug consumptions won't give the real happiness. Csikszentmihalyi did not agree with such solutions and proposes the autotelic experience or
flow theory for happiness.
Csikszentmihalyi believes that happiness comes from autotelic experience or flow. Csikszentmihalyi states that "The prerequisite for happiness is the
ability to get fully involved in life. Lack of wealth or health need not prevent one from finding flow in whatever circumstances one finds at hand". The
autotelic experience is so enjoyable that even though the activity doesn't have any outcome but it is worth doing for self–satisfaction. The flow in the
activity has a deep impact that the person surpasses the outside responses and gets deeply involved in the activity. When a person goes with a flow,
the activity performed in a natural and uninhibited manner. Such flow in the activity generates the feeling of happiness and achieves a positive state
in the person. As an illustration, Csikszentmihalyi provides an example of a composer and a lady. The composer is enjoying is work in writing the
music. The composer derives the flow in the activity which generates happiness. A significant impact is made by an autotelic experience of the person
which leads him to forget all the external things and enables him to enjoy the activity. Csikszentmihalyi suggested that the flow is very powerful that it
is not to be controlled, the things will automatically come out. So, when the proper synchronization takes place in the mind, the things will flow out
by itself. In addition, Csikszentmihalyi provides another example, which is not related to the artistic work but related to normal people. A lady is
enjoying eating cookies and reading with her daughter. A lady is experiencing the flow while doing an activity with her daughter. The lady's mind gets
involved in an autotelic experience which enables her to overcome all the other

John Stuart Mill's Idea Of Greater Happiness
I believe that Mill's idea of Greater Happiness can work, and is an easy way to think about morality (easy enough to explain to the general public).
However, it only works conditionally. A lot of the questions we had to think about involved two choices. The happiness of one person, or the
happiness of many others. There were multiple variations to this question, but the premise stays the same. Mill's idea can potentially work and also
not work, and the reason is that it depends on the intent of the people we are deciding between. If we decide on making sure our fellow human beings
are happy, we would have to make sure that the people we choose to make happy are following the same ideal. In other words, in the situation where
you choose between

Eduardo Porter's 'The Price Of Everything'
In the excerpt taken from his book "The Price of Everything" Eduardo Porter talks about the idea of happiness and where true happiness comes from.
He argues that one can witness happiness in what people strive to do, which, in his opinion, is working and making money. He utilizes quotes from
figures such as Gandhi and Abraham Lincoln which discuss happiness and how it is achieved. Also cited are statistics and studies concerning the
psychology of happiness among people. The way the author words his argument makes it sound like he believes people work because they enjoy
work itself and making money. While this is true for some, many others work because they love their chosen field, for them the money is a byproduct
of doing what they love. Porter is thinking about this from a purely economic standpoint, he does not notice the underlying reasons ... Show more

He looks at the question form an economist's viewpoint stating that since people strive to do what makes them happy, working and making money
are the things that bring people the most happiness. While this is true, the author doesn't really acknowledge that many work because they enjoy
the job and money is potentially a side objective and not the main motivator. To measure happiness one can see how content they are with their
position in life and the choices that got them there. If most of the choices seemed to have a positive effect than they are more likely to be happy.
One can also think of how many of those decisions they regret, less regret more likely correlates to more happiness. Porter viewing the question like
an economist severely limits what he sees. All he can see is the work people put in and the money they get out of it, he assumes people work to make
money and not maybe because they enjoy their job. To an economist there is nothing but work and money involved in making people

The Proposal: Does Happiness A Recipe For Disaster?
"Happiness as a byproduct of living your life is a great thing....but happiness as a goal is a recipe for disaster." One of the greatest things in life is to
experience the feeling of happiness. Whether it's because you're surrounded by loved ones or you're doing something you loved or something random
happened that put a smile on your face it's a great thing to feel happiness. What that quote is saying however is that by striving to get that amazing
feeling we could cause more problems for ourselves. Although we all enjoy that feeling of happiness and don't like when it goes away we have to
realize that most of the time it's not hard work that brings it back. What brings us the feeling of happiness is letting the unexpected happen, it's sharing

In the movie a successful book editor named Margaret blackmails her assistant Andrew into marrying her so that she can get her green card and
keep her job. Margret is determined to keep her job because she believes it is the only thing that can make her happy. She was so focused on
reaching that happiness that she didn't see that she could be finding an even greater happiness in her relationship with Andrew. Even after
spending time with him Margaret was still going to go through with the fake wedding risking Andrew going to jail all because she thought the
only way to be happy was to keep her job. In the end she finally realized that while she had been chasing the goal of happiness the greatest happiness
had been happening right in front of her and she hadn't even realized it. It took her so long that she was standing at the altar when she finally
accepted that because she had been so focused on the goal of happiness she had put Andrew, her true happiness, in danger and that she would now
have to give him up to protect him. She was almost deported and almost lost the person she loved all because she was focused on happiness as a
goal. Now I know this type of extreme situation doesn't happen everyday, but it does show an important lesson. That if we don't stop every once in a

Definition Essay On Happiness
According to the Dictionary, "happiness is the mental or emotional state of well being which can be defined by others. A pleasurable or satisfying
experience.". Of course that's true, the feeling of happiness is what it's scientifically defined as, but happiness is much more than that. Happiness could
be a certain sound, a smell, even feeling a certain piece of clothing or a thick warm blanket. People spend hours even years trying to work for what
they think is happiness. They work for hours to get large amounts of money, but they never find the happiness their looking for. That's because
happiness isn't materialistic, happiness isn't something you can buy with expensive items. Even though some people believe you can buy happiness,

Knowing they're happy for whatever reason is where i find my happiness. The feeling of happiness starts off with just a simple look at something
or even someone you love. Having the feeling of happiness in your heart that slowly creeps up until you're smiling for what seems like ages. True
happiness doesn't last for seconds or even minutes, it feels as though it lasts a life time. People tend to feel the most happiness in their daily lives
rather than happiness over all. For instance, if someone opens the door for you, does something outrageous, tells a funny story or simply reacts
kindly to you, you can experience happiness. Laughing at someones joke can cause you to feel happy even for just a moment. Another definition of
happiness in our daily lives is self appreciation such as, getting that new raise, getting an A on a test or even getting into the college you want. These
examples all cause happiness in different but still rather large ways. We seem to think that happiness is so difficult to come by, we focus so hard on
what happiness is that we don't even realize the simple things in life that are truly making a difference. We can become significantly happy without
even noticing. Although happiness seems like it's hard to find it's not all that difficult. What's hard to come by is the feeling of genuine happiness ;
genuine happiness is what people truly look for. Over all happiness isn't about being rich or having the most expensive items

The Importance Of Happiness In The Work Environment
Happiness in a work environment can aid to increase productivity, decrease the amount of injuries due to stress and unhappiness, plus it create more
jobs because people want to work in that type of environment. The environment around employees can alter their speed of productivity if it is
unpleasant to them. This issue has gone for many years in many businesses and has been overlooked by these corporations. Considering that almost
80% of doctor visits because of work are due to stress. As a business owner, I will need to understand what affects my employees. The business can be
affected by a decrease in productivity due to an unhappy environment. The efficiency of the business will depend on the environment that surrounds
the employees. There is studies that show that the work environment in a business can affect how well the employees work and can lead to an
increase in the number of jobs at that business. People that are enduring high amounts of unhappiness and stress are more likely to get injured.
Businesses' can fail, because their employees are not in a enjoyable environment to work and this will lead to a decline in productivity. A decrease in
productivity will lead to a decline in the profit, because less products will lead to less money coming into the business. Some businesses' want investors
to put money into their business, so that they can grow, but investors do not want to invest in a business that has employees that are not happy and are
not productive

The novel Candide, written by Voltaire during the Enlightenment, an intellectual movement during the 18th century, that promoted rational thinking,
favored secularistic views over religious ones and left irrationality and superstition behind. Voltaire's novel is about a young and sheltered man,
Candide, who finds true happiness after witnessing and experiencing great hardships. At the end of the novel, Candide's final words are, "we must
cultivate our gardens", which means that if one desire to find true happiness, they must be actively pursuing it and not be hoping that it will come on

Happiness is a funny thing, because, unlike other emotions it relies so strongly on its polar opposite. What is happiness without unhappiness? Whose
happiness matters most?
We as humans like to live our lives in pursuit of hedonism. And like to judge situations based on the utility it produces for ourselves, and if you're
particularly altruistic, the utility of your loved ones. We put such a high priority on being happy, that everything in our lives revolves around it. And we
don't often realize that our own happiness leads to others unhappiness. For example, Trump is happy, because he attained a powerful position that he
didn't deserve. Yet, the very thing that makes him happy is causing immigrants stress, and fear, and unhappiness. Whose... Show more content on

We as humans tend to like instant gratification, but long term happiness often results because we do things that make us less happy then, but will
lead to more opportunity in the future. Hundreds of thousands of people go to college for example. I for one know I dislike homework, and busy
work, which college is full of. Doing work lessens my happiness now, but later on in life completing college will set me up for more opportunities.
Because I completed college, I will have access to better jobs, jobs that provide more security, security that allows me to live out my life with less
stress and worry, less stress that allows me to generally be much happier than I would have been if I had graduated from high school and gone straight
into a minimum wage job. Is the greater happiness in the future worth the reduced happiness now? Am I happier now doing the work, knowing I will

Essay about The Happiness Project Analysis
Happiness is not a strange term to us. We usually use that word to express our feelings in every day. Additionally, more than a word, "happiness" is
what we really need and always seek in life. However, finding and understanding deeply its meaning is not easy. The online dictionary,
"vocabulary.com" defines, "Happiness is a sense of well–being, joy, or contentment. When people are successful, or safe, or lucky, they feel happiness."
Thus, we always wonder if we are happy or how could we be happier in our life. Happiness, therefore, becomes a goal for everybody.
Everyone has their own way to find happiness. As it is a feeling, each of us has our own range and different definitions about this term. We know that
there are many joyful things ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Happiness is a result that we deserved, furthermore, it becomes a motivation for us to keep trying and getting success in life.
Essentially, seeking happiness is necessary in life. We often hope to find happiness from other people, other things around us and forget that we can
create it by ourselves. The novel "The happiness project" by Gretchen Rubin is sufficient evidence. The author states, "I am happy – but I'm not as
happy as I should be."(13) Then she started a project within a year to change her life and seek for a happier life. By making a list of things she has to
do in the next twelve months, the author have done many things which affects her "Vitality" (1), her "Marriage" (38), her "Leisure" (112), her
"Friendship" (141),etc. positively so that she can achieve her goal, which is a life full filed of happiness as she dreamed before. We can also do that.
We know that if everyone of us set a goal and live purposely, we are all happy. However, we can be happier if we know how to change ourselves on the
right way. We can make ourselves happy by doing simple things in our everyday life.
For example, we should reward ourselves with a small gift when we got works done. Moreover, there are many other ways for us to find happiness.
Social media and entertainments can help. Many reality shows, TV programs, comedy films are produced with the main goal are helping people to be
happy. Although we have many

Happiness Is Not Measurable, Profitable, Or Tradable
Happiness is not measurable, profitable, or tradable. People want to have happiness but happiness is a hard thing to grasp, you can not simply hold
it in your hand. So how does a person know they have happiness? For some, happiness is waking up and doing something they love, like caring for
children. For others it is driving on the open road. What makes someone happy is often related to their age group, as a new toy will not bring the same
happiness to a married man as it would his 6 year old daughter. But no matter what age, happiness is a state of mind, not a destination. Happiness does
not come from materialistic items, rather a life of meaning, and balance between work and fun, and the choice to be happy will bring true happiness.
Happiness is not measured by material items. A new house, boat, or television does not equate to a joyful feeling. They are simply status symbols.
In today's society it is common to think that a person is happy when they have material wealth. People seem to forget that materials do not equate to
a happy life. The phrase, "money can't buy happiness," is heard often, because it is true. For example, Disneyland is said to be the Happiest Place on
Earth, said so much to the point where it is basically accepted as fact. But does that mean that everyone who visits is happy? No, just like material
wealth, there is no guarantee. For anyone who has even considered a trip to Disney knows it is expensive.

Giorgio Agamben Magic And Happiness Analysis
The concept of happiness has eluded philosophers and intellectuals since the beginning of mankind's ability to reason; though many have attempted to
create overarching theories regarding the phenomenon, all have fallen short of grasping the dual nature of its formation: both demanding of hard
work and of faith in some higher, seemingly transcendent force. Giorgio Agamben's piece "Magic and Happiness," an excerpt from his work
Profanations, is no exception. The passage argues in favor of a belief in "magic," a divine and all–encompassing force that presents, in his opinion, the
solitary path towards true happiness. His argument, formed around the notion that persistent effort and achievement ultimately cannot yield happiness

Instead of spending copious amounts of time researching for a doctorate in chemistry, one could easily redirect that time towards watching television or
doing things that are much more comfortable. It is only logical that people forego this comfort in life in pursuit of something infinitely more important;
said doctoral candidate presenting his/her thesis would do so with much more satisfaction and true happiness with confidence in the fact that he/she
invested assiduously as opposed to having it all dawn upon him/her in one divine, magical experience. Simply put, a rational actor pursuing happiness
would invest time logically into things most important to him/her; the fruition of those efforts is more likely to create happiness and emotional
validation. Furthermore, Agamben's erroneous implication that self–awareness of happiness is correlated with a god–complex–like hubris fails to take
into consideration the connection between happiness and humility; this correlation is crucial because it allows one to take ownership of the happiness
he/she earned. The text poses a bold claim that " [w]hoever enjoys [happiness derived from magic] escapes from the hubris implicit in the consciousness
of happiness, since... the happiness that he knows he possesses is not his" (Agamben). In making this statement, Agamben makes himself clear:

The Importance Of Happiness
Introduction
Happiness is a major key to a person's overall well–being and self–confidence in their everyday life. In order to maintain happiness, most people have
daily routines and or hobbies that they do on a regular basis that brings them joy and happiness. Without happiness the important activities that people
take part in could be missing its full potential due to lack of happiness and self–esteem. The following 10 activities can create daily joy and happiness
and suspend daily hardships: basketball (sports), music, television, working out, sleeping, day dreaming/ future planning, video games, relaxation,

Some people may take a more advanced route which could involve weight–lifting and more physical activity such as sit ups, push–ups, dumbbells, and
weight lifting machines. Exercising with a group or a trainer for example, could be beneficial due to the boost that their friends or trainer could
provide for someone when people work out together. Exercise is one of the major keys and easiest ways to benefit someone's health and is highly
recommend to anyone. As some people may know, sleep is arguably the most important activity to a person's health and well–being. Sleep is usually
done alone unless someone considers alongside their spouse as a group but that's a different story to discuss. Sleep is an activity that everyone should
do on a day–to–day basis due to the amount of energy it provides which is why sleep is a major part of daily happiness. Sleep is what the body
needs after a long day at work, class or just after a long productive day to replenish someone's energy that was lost during those sorts of activities.
Without sleep the body starts to drift out in certain situations and tends to put out poor potential due to lack of energy.
There are multiple ways and forms of sleep a person can participate in to improve their daily joy and happiness. The average person needs around 6–9
hours of sleep a day so if someone is receiving anything under that timeframe, chances are they aren't too happy with the amount of sleep they are
getting or just not happy

Late Adulthood Research Paper
Factors that Contribute to a Happy Life in Late Adulthood
Happiness is subjective and may be influenced in various ways according to one's perception. However, there is a level of happiness that is agreeable
as substantial to all. Happiness could be experienced differently in various phases in life, according to the conditions or circumstances in such stages
(Coon and Mitterer 261). This has raised concerns about whether happiness comes with age, as many would prefer to age gracefully, due to
negativities associated with old age such as ill health or loneliness. Hence, in a review of this matter, there are various factors that could determine
whether an individual becomes happy in late adulthood. This paper will identify and discuss these factors in detail.
One of the factors that contribute to happiness in late adulthood is gender. Although men and women are of a similar species and are recognized as
equal in the modern society, they are not the same. First, the roles and expectations of men and women have been defined by culture, location, and
religion among many other factors (Schacter, Gilbert, Wegner, and Hood 421). Additionally, there is a significant difference in how... Show more

Research on diseases such as cancer has indicated that such serious illnesses have an effect on a person's happiness (Schacter, Gilbert, Wegner, and

Work and Happiness in Death of a Salesman and Remains of the Day
What a person does to make a living often defines who that person is. Because so much time and energy is invested into work, work is often seen as
an extension of oneself. One of the first questions that someone asks after meeting you for the first time is about what you do for a living. The belief
is that by knowing what you do, one should be able to tell something about who you are. People almost never ask the more telling question of whether
or not you are happy. They rely on the nature of the occupation to tell them something about your happiness. If you are a doctor, lawyer, or celebrity, it

Workers may need validation or appreciation, a sense of belonging, feelings of accomplishment or achievement, or respect or power. Jobs that provide
these determinants or values in the quantities that the individual needs are good jobs in that the worker is going to be happy. Jobs that provide most
of these determinants may still be unhappy jobs because the job may be missing that one value that a specific individual needs most. The same job is
seen differently by two different people because the values of the individual are the most important determinants of whether or not the job is a happy
one.
In finding happiness at work, there is a large but limited set of values or factors; the key is determining how much of each value is needed. The
individual is the only one who can make the determination of how much of each value is needed. What makes one person happy at work is not the same
combination for the next guy. One guy may value a big salary to be happy while another could be just as happy with a little less pay and a little more
involvement. The right mix of variables is personal because priorities need to be set. Rare is the job that provides all the values that you need in the
exactly right proportions. Because of the rarity of the perfect job, we need to decide on what values we could be content with upholding.
Happiness on the job is closely related to contentment of values. In fact, happiness could just be

The Beliefs Of Happiness : What Is Happiness?
What Is Happiness? Happiness comes from the emotional and mental well–being characterized by positive emotions. Being happy comes with a good
feeling of accomplishment and joy. Every individual has a different perception on what happiness is and what it brings. The word "happy" differs from
the seventeenth to eighteenth century. Society grasps a new view on what happiness really is. Happiness can be brought by something physical like a
nice car, an extravagant house, or having a lot of money. Happiness can also come from relationships, family, and friendships. McMahon from Yale
states that "Hap is the Old Norse and Old English root of happiness, and it just means luck or chance". The way in which happiness is viewed has
been revolutionized from the seventeenth century to now. In the seventeenth century, people believed happiness stemmed from luck or divine favor.
This elated feeling was commonly thought of as fate or fortune passed down by gods with humans having no control over it. Happiness was not
something that could be made or achieved, but something that merely "happened". Greek philosophers like Aristotle and Plato perceived happiness as
something that can be earned by various actions and choices. In addition, they believed true happiness is impossible to have due to the intense amount
of work, devotion and discipline needed to maintain a good fortune judged by the gods. Christians believed happiness can only occur in one of the
three circumstances: in the

Comparing The Raven And I Am The Cheese
"I am the Cheese" is a book that has events and quotes are somewhat similar to other books and movies. ""I'm going back," I yell."No, you're not," I
answer." (11.5–6). This shows that there is a similarity between the poem "The Raven" and "I am the Cheese". In "The Raven" when the speaker has
a conversation with the raven, it symbolizes his inner conflict. This is clearly similar because in this quote Adam is having an inner conflict and it is
also expressed in a conversation. Furthermore, other events in the book are relatable to books and movies. "[...] And you don't even know who to
trust anymore. Do you know who the bad guys are?" [...] "Of course you don't. Because you can't tell the good guys from the bad guys anymore.
Nobody knows these days. Nobody." (3.19–21). This concept is like the one followed by a show called "Tokyo Ghoul". In the show a teenager named
Kaneki gets a organ transplant and becomes half–ghoul and half– human. He is forced to feed on humans. Before, he thought that ghouls were the
enemy, now he doesn't know who the enemy is anymore; the human inspectors who attack innocent ghouls or the ghouls themselves. This is very much
alike what Adam states, he is unable to trust others in his situation.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Essay on Happiness in Aristotle’s work: The Nicomachean...
Aristotle's work, The Nicomachean Ethics, consists of numerous books pertaining to Aristotle's Ethics–the ethics of the good life. The first book
discloses Aristotle's belief on moral philosophy and the correlation between virtue and happiness.
The definition of happiness has long been disputed. According to Aristotle, happiness is the highest good and the ultimate end goal–for it is self–reliant.
This idea contradicted other common beliefs and philosophical theories. Aristotle opens his work by describing the various theories, neutrally
examines each idea, and discloses how he thinks the theory is wrong and why his idea of happiness is more accurate.
The most accepted theory until Aristotle was that of Plato–that good was a universal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Since man is the only creature to have free will and a conscience, these must be central to a good life for a human. The definition of happiness has long
been disputed, and in order to establish a general definition one must discover mankind's function (1095a.20). The distinct function of human beings
will differentiate man from all other beings, thus it cannot be related to the characteristics of animals or plants. Aristotle explains that all living beings
grow, and that man and animals share instinct. Through elimination, Aristotle establishes the distinct function of man as logic. Only human beings
contain three souls and have the ability to use reason. Aristotle states, "the function of man then is activity of soul [thinking well and doing well] in
accordance with reason" (). Ultimately, logic allows human beings to use reason in decision–making and to be virtuous. Aristotle explains what a
competent judge of ethics is. "Each man judges correctly those matters with which he is acquainted; it is of these that he is a competent critic"
(1094b.20). Ultimately, he believes that younger people lack the experience needed to use their reason. Instead, younger people will follow their
instinct and feelings. According to this believe, Aristotle is showing that true happiness (achieved through virtues) is a lifetime effort.
According to Aristotle, every action performed is done to attain an end goal (or good). The goals for each

Is Money Really Buys Happiness?
The case study discussed if money really buys happiness. The University of Pennsylvania found rich people are happier than poor ones, poor countries
are not happier than rich countries. Nevertheless, to add to the complexity of happiness and money, in 1974, Easterlin found that only one's relative
income compared to peers and neighbors matters for happiness, not absolute income (Gomez–Mejia, Balkin, & Cardy, 2014). Comparative relative
income to one's peers and neighbors is known as the Easterlin paradox. A more recent study conducted by two Watson professors, Stevenson and
Wolfers, say the that Easterlin paradox does not exist. The two professors research concludes; rich people are happier than poor people, rich countries
are happier than poor and as countries grow richer they tend to get happier. Although the studies lean towards identifying happiness with money I am
inclined to doubt that is the only reason. I agree money is a determinant for happiness at work and in life in general but is not the only factor. Money
could be the outcome of other goals achieved in life such as higher education or starting a successful business. In my experiences, the adventure of
starting a new business outweighed the income received from the venture. Therefore, the step or journey towards money is likely a subset of achieved
milestones that accumulate happiness. Most people use money as a measurement for their success. With that in mind, I believe money is certainly

we should not search for happiness. The enjoyments of life are sufficient to make it a pleasant thing.Enjoying your life, doing the things that make you
happy should make you feel happy. If you search for happiness it wont come to you because happiness comes to you the moment you don't expect it to
come. Happiness should not be searched for.
You should find happiness by the things you are surrounded by.You should be happy by having your family and friends around you.People search for

Daniel Gilbert The Science Behind The Smile
Measures of Happiness and the Secret behind Smile
In his article, "The Science behind the Smile", Daniel Gilbert focuses on the various aspects, reasons and measures of happiness. Happiness, as he
explains has now become a part of science which was previously studied only by psychologists. Giving it a scientific view, an economist studies
happiness to coincide it with the theory of 'wants'. When he gets to know the 'wants', he'll be able to assume the demand which in turn will also help
him in assuming the supply and overall managing of microeconomics and macroeconomics. Then there are neuroscientists studying happiness from a
medical attitude, helping themselves to come up with conclusions; but how every discipline measures ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A first distinction is between experienced and remembered well–being. Experienced well–being depends on moment–by–moment reports, usually of
pleasure or pain, and remembered well–being is reported subsequently, and is hence based on memory. A second distinction relates to the time span of
the emotion or event being experienced or remembered. For experienced well–being, the time span is momentary, but for remembered well–being, the
report can relate to a past moment (how did you feel when something happened, or at noon), to the average for any particular event or time period,
whether yesterday, last week, your last holiday, your just–finished colonoscopy, or to your life as a whole these days. A third distinction is between
evaluations and emotional reports. An evaluation is inherently a judgment about something, while an emotional report is more simply the description
of an emotional state. (John F. Helliwell and Shun Wang, 2012)
The report found the following: в–Є Happier countries tend to be richer countries. But more important for happiness than income are social factors like
the strength of social support, the absence of corruption and the degree of personal freedom. в–Є Over time as living standards have risen, happiness
has increased in some countries, but not in others (like for example, the United States). On average, the world has become a little happier in the

your well–being, and there is a great connection between money and happiness. More money can lead to more memorable opportunities and
experiences. Some may be expensive, but worth it in the long run. This leads to a healthier lifestyle and an overall happier life. According to CNN, "It

Definition Essay: What Is Perfect Happiness?
What is Perfect happiness? To be in a state of perfect happiness is to be in a state in which an Individual has complete and utter joy with themselves
and the things around them, and how they affect an individual's life. In today's society it seems that most people will search and fight for the answer
for perfect happiness. The topic of happiness is beyond the most crucial thing to talk about in today's society, the need to be happy is what has
driven, is driving, and will drive people to do the most remarkable and daring actions a person will ever do, the need for happiness in their life can
even drive people to create, discover, and destroy. That is why Finding what perfect happiness is, is remarkably important. My idea of perfect
happiness is being able to know what the absolute truth to how the universe works, and to be within a state of mind where my mind is not in a constant
state of shifting from viewpoint to viewpoint.
The main reason for why I believe that this is perfect happiness, is because so many times in this God forsaken world, people fight over everything,

Pig Happinesso Summary
In Pig Happinesso, Lynne McFall writes five types of pig happiness. They are the "happy" idiot, the incompetent bottlecap collector, the deluded fool,
the successful immoralist, and the impossible idealist. The author finally talks about that we can not use our own standard to judge others happiness
are good or not, because happiness is just a report of someone's own mind. I really agree with the author's opinion, because I think happiness is
actually "all the small things in life that makes us happy". (Klopatra, 2012) Last class, our teacher asked everyone in my class to describe
"happiness" in one sentence. For me, without thinking, I said happiness meant that I got A from that class. It was no doubt that everybody laughed
after hearing that. I have to say that I was trying to make everyone feel happy at that moment, because I think sometimes this kind of pig happiness is
also a happiness, and at least this kind of "poor thing is happy" (McFall, p.411). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Definition Essay: The Pursuit Of Happiness
The Pursuit of Happiness Americans constantly find themselves desiring happiness. However, what is happiness and how does someone achieve it?
According to Webster–Dictionary.org, happiness is "An agreeable feeling or condition of the soul arising from good fortune or propitious happening of
any kind; the possession of those circumstances or that state of being which is attended with enjoyment". Every American seeks happiness, but
achieving it is the struggle. Americans search for fleeting happiness, therefore, we often find contentment in mediocre living. Happiness is one of
the strongest emotions we have as humans. However, it is also one of the biggest deceptions we face. As David Brooks states, "Happiness wants
you to think about maximizing your benefits. Difficulty and suffering sends you on a different route" (567). Happiness can lead to greediness and
games played on the mind. As Americans, we are fortunate for many modern day conveniences, however, these conveniences create a sense of greed
that we do not notice. These modern conveniences births a need for instant satisfaction to be happy. An article by International Pathwork Foundation
quotes, "Only if I can have what I want, the way I want it, and when I want it, can I have happiness". Building on this idea, suffering, although
carrying negative connotation, can put a whole new twist on happiness that we don't necessarily think about. By enduring negative events, such as
the death of a loved one, puts you in a more level headed idea of happiness. It simplifies the things that bring you happiness rather than striving for
the maximum level of happiness. When you reach for unobtainable happiness, it sets you up for failure by letting you down when you are unable to
reach the high expectations you set for yourself. David Brooks says, "Then, suffering gives people a more accurate sense of their own limitations,
what they can control and cannot control" (567). Although suffering is not the most colorful thing to withstand, some people are not only able to
discover happiness, but also, a whole new outlook on life. David Brooks says, "Think of the way Franklin Roosevelt came back deeper and more
empathetic after being struck with polio. Often, physical

Everyone everywhere has happiness as an emotion, some people are truly happy and others are living in a fake world they've made themselves to

Arguably, happiness is a goal that is achievable by other anyone, but the biggest roadblock is morality (Cederstrom 8). Everyone has their own idea

economically happy is working hard, but if you work too much you will not have time to enjoy what you have earned. If you work all the time

Happiness and Relationships
The person's genetics and childhood or the person's family and culture are things that influence a person's happiness. Happiness is a mindset that is
created by a person's surroundings and their origins. Relationships are can be very important for a person's happiness or may have in some ways
thought to be important for happiness. One thing that is thought to make a person happy is marriage. Even though marriage has a great influence on a
person's life it doesn't make them necessarily happy (Stein A37–A40). A person that is married is generally someone who was already happy but if a
person is unsociable or lonely the person may become happier. Marriage can make a person less happy if they expect too much of the other person or
think that the person is perfect. A person may become happier by having close relationships and acting kind and grateful but to remain happy the person
needs to keep doing these actions and continuing these relationships to continue being happy (Wallis A2–A9). As a child a person must make many
relationships to be successful resilient. If a person is abused as a child the person does not have good relationship and may not always grow up
happy. If a child has someone to support or encourage the child they will be more likely to be happy this person is called a champion (Gorman
A52–A55). A person that has a negative attitude can cause bad relationships and can also cause others to be unhappy. Because of this idea a person
must choose a person that can be

The Is Not A Good Thing
Wouldn't it be nice to be in complete bliss every day of your life? That seems like a stupid question to ask; of course your first response would be,
"duh". Everyone wants happiness in their life, that is why most of our decisions are based on whether it will make us happy or not. This is where we
underestimate the power of going through something sad or difficult. Although nobody searches for sadness, it is vital that we experience some sort of
pain in our lives to balance the happy times, since there are risks of pursuing extreme happiness. Sometimes we can have too much happiness,
experience happiness at the wrong time, become sad when we are looking for happiness, or even seek the wrong kind of happiness. While you may

Having too much happiness could end up giving you the same effect as a drug; the more you have, the more you want. Being too happy consumes us,
and could also come when we do not need it.
When things go wrong, we need to feel bad, it only makes sense. Feeling happy when something bad happens won't teach you anything. If you lost
your job, but you're happy you lost it, then you'll never learn the importance of a job. We also become more gullible when we're happy. This may
cause you to miss warning signs that you need to see, causing you to trust someone more than you should. Fear ignites the fight–or–flight response. So,
being too happy to acknowledge this can create many problems. For example, if I am mindlessly walking my dog down the sidewalk, headphones in,
thinking of how excited I am for the weekend, I may not notice the sketchy car that is driving up behind me. Being happy during the wrong times
could make you overlook something important, and could even make you worse off than you were before.
I've learned in philosophy that the more you search for happiness, the less likely you will be to find it. Epicureans believe that if you focus on what
you are doing, rather than how you feel, then pleasure will come. One reason for this may be because you are constantly searching in other places, so
you miss what is right in front of you. For me, when I came to college I was so

What Is Happiness The essay "The Four Secrets to Making Our Own Happiness" by Jane McGonigal explains why the majority of people are not
able to find happiness in life, and what contributes to happiness more essentially. "There are many ways to be happy, but we cannot find happiness. No
object, no event, no outcome or life circumstance can deliver real happiness to us" (Faigley 368). The author very efficiently presents her research
verified by numerous sources of related studies. McGonigal bases her essay on two types of self–rewards – monetary and non–monetary, classifies
most likely contributing factors to human happiness, and as a game designer/researcher, she explains how games contribute to higher quality of life.

was absolutely in agreement with her own representation. To explain why people are so concentrated on extrinsic rewards, the author used Sonja
Lyubomirsly's clarification: "We have been conditioned to believe that the wrong things will make us lastingly happy. We have been sold the

The Role Of Happiness In Fahrenheit 451
"Most people are about as happy as they make up their minds to be." –Abraham Lincoln.

people or other things other than themselves is what true emotion is. People who do not try to experience the world are not the best at being happy.
Feeling emotion is the thing that a human must always have, and it makes a human have personality. If a human does not have personality, then they

to the full extent. Science cannot simplify happiness, but it should instead work with other interpretations of happiness. Science plays a big role in
happiness, but cannot be the only thing that shows what true happiness is. The true feeling of happiness in people is mixed, but there are different
types of happiness, that affect one another. People could be happy for the wrong reason, in example; the bullying type of happiness is unjust, and it
is not real happiness if someone puts someone else down, to make them feel happier. If the people are mean to others, then it is unlikely that they are
going to be happy for the right reason in the future. True happiness is when people are with others, and having the time of their life. People should

Don Peck And Ross Douthat's 'Does Money Buy Happiness?'
The "American Dream" is based on the fundamental idea that one's social status, and ultimately their happiness, is deeply rooted in their financial
success and the material items they possess. It is often believed that mass consumerism has become an indicator of one's ability to participate as an
elite member of society and ultimately complete the pursuit of happiness. However, groups also object these views of happiness and suggest that
happiness is based on far more than material items. One's perception on the correlation of materialism and the pursuit of happiness is dependent on an
individual's experience as a consumer. Don Peck and Ross Douthat convey through their editorial, "Does Money Buy Happiness?," that one's level of
content to a degree is contingent upon their ability to act as a consumer in society. Peck and Douthat base their assumption on research which shows,
"For individual countries, with few exceptions, self–reported happiness has increased as incomes have risen" (332, par.4) Based on this statistic, it is
being assumed that one's ability to support their lifestyle and perhaps better it creates a sense of security that leads to happiness.... Show more content

Somnambulist By Alfie Kohn Analysis

on personal growth, community feeling, and personal relationships to obtain happiness. These are the differences between extrinsic and intrinsic
happiness. Extrinsic happiness relies on materialistic needs while intrinsic happiness relies on psychological needs, as shown in the movie Happy.
"How Not to Get Into College: The Preoccupation with Preparation," by Alfie Kohn, and the poem "Somnambulist," by Heron Jones, suggests that

The article "How Not to Get into College: The Preoccupation with Preparation," by Alfie Kohn, shows that the main focus for students are extrinsic
rewards, in this case, a college acceptance. The article states that colleges and universities only "seem to be looking for winners rather than learners"
(Kohn, 25), which only continues to teach students to rely on extrinsic rewards. Students focus on preparing for college by completing assignments that
"the very concept of [doing things] for pleasure [is] unfamiliar to [them]... They [are] ignoring – or perhaps, by now, even forgetting – what they [enjoy]
doing." (Kohn, 6–7). In the process of trying to achieve these rewards, they focus on successfully completing things like assignments and projects rather
than doing things for their own pleasure. The poem "Somnambulist" by Heron Jones also displays that educators are teaching students to rely on
rewards for happiness. "Even schools paint the fantasy with the brush of prosperity" (Jones, 28), the metaphor the comparison between a teacher and a
student, to show the similarity and differences between the understanding that educators and students have of happiness. Educators allow students to
believe that extrinsic rewards are the most important thing in their lives and is used as motivation to achieve the highest possible grades. Students are
forced to achieve the happiness that the educators want them to achieve, to benefit themselves and the education system. Students rely heavily on
getting into college thinking that it will benefit them in the future; however the lifelong search for intrinsic happiness does not

  • 2. Psychological Effects Of Materialism And Work On Happiness... Psychological Effects of Materialism and Work on Happiness by Matt Brundage talks about how happiness for many is the elusive butterfly. However the phrase Wealth does not ensure happiness is deptively simple but is unfortunately not heeded by many in our society. What makes one happy is hard to define because it is transient and differs from person to person. Unhappiness unfortunately generates a need for material possessions and more wealth. For this reason, unhappiness and materialism reinforce each other; materialism breeds unhappiness and vice versa. However Business and the consumerism mindset have helped to shift the source of true happiness from intangible entities such as relationships, faith, and security to material goods. Furthermore, ... • 3. Definition Essay: Happiness Is A State Of Mind Happiness is a state of mind which takes control of a person's emotions depending on the occasion one is experiencing or the situation one is involved in. According to Merriam–Webster, the definition of happiness is a state of well–being and contentment. As well as, a pleasurable or satisfying experience. Which in my opinion can be accomplished by assets acquired during periods of time. Money, jobs, and relationships are all examples of fulfillments that affect an individual's way of thinking. Happiness is expressed differently depending on the kind of mood or stage in life an individual is experiencing. If a person feels tired or sad the happy state of mind is never going to occur. No person will ever feel happy if all they're going ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Some people love their job and other people hate theirs. If an individual works in the strawberry fields sun up till sun down their state of mind will always be misery. Having to wake up every day at five in the morning to prepare lunch and to get ready to go to work will not put a smile on their face. Field workers never brag about how great their job is and that is because their job sucks. A person's job plays a huge role in whether an individual can express happiness or not. I can personally relate to field workers because I was a field worker myself. Growing up in Santa Maria, California and coming from a Hispanic background family automatically made me an eligible candidate to work in the agriculture industry. Every day that I worked in the strawberry fields I felt nothing but pain. I was never in the state of mind of feeling happy due to my depressed state of well–being. I knew my following day was going to be as terrible as my last. My first days were the toughest. I would get home from work and simply shower, eat, and sleep. I would fall asleep right away due to my unbearable back pain. There were days where I tried to obligate my state of mind to feel happy, but it simply didn't work. I believe that the happiness state of mind can only be obtained if you're going through peaceful and enjoyable times. One can't simply just make happiness ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. What Does Hard Work Mean To You Essay When I was only 10 years old, in order to achieve the ultimate happiness, I could want, I would look to others. At only ten years old, I enjoyed when others would fill my happiness with either gifts or coming over to play. Yet, today my life has sort of slowly slipped away from that. I feel and see happiness when I work to improve myself, put myself in a position to impact others, and to work hardest to create opportunities to give others a smile. In working to upgrade my body to a better status, I find others on the same track and working towards the same goals. It is inspiring and is addicting to work with other people to make ourselves better. The same can be said for work. It is absolutely grueling to have to trudge to work every day. However, I have been able to connect with others, work through adversity and the grueling tasks of the day. It is the memories of going through hard work and achieving results for yourself that we always remember. When going through the journey of trying to be better, there will be traps along the way to stop us. But by opening to colleagues and others, it only opens different doors to potential. My father was in the Navy for over 28 years and has been engaged in several positions of high stress and responsibility. But even on bad days, and nights where he came home late looking defeated. He still managed to put on a smile for our family, and if he could not, he would step out, take a deep breath and come in. It can be hard to hold happiness. But my father proved to me that happiness can certainly be worked for, and once the priority of being happy is to sustain the well–being of others as well, it becomes too easy. It all starts with being in the right place, by forcing yourself to be able to only be able to create happiness. This means, surrounding myself with a friend group ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. C. S. Lewis Pursuit Of Happiness Defining happiness can be very difficult. Everyone has their own perspective of happiness. When speaking about your own perspective it could crash into another's. Trying to find which one makes the most sense is complicated. Happiness in the United States is first claimed by the Founding Fathers. After a miserable relationship with Great Britain and King George, the Americans took a stand. In that stand they claimed that all men are created equally and we have the right to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit ofHappiness. C.S Lewis questions how far the right of the Pursuit of Happiness is actually meant to go. He believes we do not have the right to happiness. Lewis is against human urges. He does not like them and does not believe we get to back ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She begins with stating that money does not and cannot fill a person's basic psychological needs (Rubin 295). Rubin goes on to claim that we do take daily things, like air conditioning and a car, for granted and we do not know how good we have something until it is gone. She does offer a solution to our problem; which is spend money wisely. As long as we know how to use and spend money we can be happy. Rubin brings out the topic of spending out. This means that when we do things or in this case buy things, do not think about the return (Rubin 306). Another idea she mentioned was a indulging in a modest money splurge. • 6. Autotelic Theory Of Happiness Analysis Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi observes several theories of happiness which ranged from materialistic happiness to the self–contentment practices. He stated that being wealthy or having all the facilities don't make you happy. Even forcing your body to become happy by practicing different spiritual rituals, yoga or drug consumptions won't give the real happiness. Csikszentmihalyi did not agree with such solutions and proposes the autotelic experience or flow theory for happiness. Csikszentmihalyi believes that happiness comes from autotelic experience or flow. Csikszentmihalyi states that "The prerequisite for happiness is the ability to get fully involved in life. Lack of wealth or health need not prevent one from finding flow in whatever circumstances one finds at hand". The autotelic experience is so enjoyable that even though the activity doesn't have any outcome but it is worth doing for self–satisfaction. The flow in the activity has a deep impact that the person surpasses the outside responses and gets deeply involved in the activity. When a person goes with a flow, the activity performed in a natural and uninhibited manner. Such flow in the activity generates the feeling of happiness and achieves a positive state in the person. As an illustration, Csikszentmihalyi provides an example of a composer and a lady. The composer is enjoying is work in writing the music. The composer derives the flow in the activity which generates happiness. A significant impact is made by an autotelic experience of the person which leads him to forget all the external things and enables him to enjoy the activity. Csikszentmihalyi suggested that the flow is very powerful that it is not to be controlled, the things will automatically come out. So, when the proper synchronization takes place in the mind, the things will flow out by itself. In addition, Csikszentmihalyi provides another example, which is not related to the artistic work but related to normal people. A lady is enjoying eating cookies and reading with her daughter. A lady is experiencing the flow while doing an activity with her daughter. The lady's mind gets involved in an autotelic experience which enables her to overcome all the other ... • 7. John Stuart Mill's Idea Of Greater Happiness I believe that Mill's idea of Greater Happiness can work, and is an easy way to think about morality (easy enough to explain to the general public). However, it only works conditionally. A lot of the questions we had to think about involved two choices. The happiness of one person, or the happiness of many others. There were multiple variations to this question, but the premise stays the same. Mill's idea can potentially work and also not work, and the reason is that it depends on the intent of the people we are deciding between. If we decide on making sure our fellow human beings are happy, we would have to make sure that the people we choose to make happy are following the same ideal. In other words, in the situation where you choose between ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Eduardo Porter's 'The Price Of Everything' In the excerpt taken from his book "The Price of Everything" Eduardo Porter talks about the idea of happiness and where true happiness comes from. He argues that one can witness happiness in what people strive to do, which, in his opinion, is working and making money. He utilizes quotes from figures such as Gandhi and Abraham Lincoln which discuss happiness and how it is achieved. Also cited are statistics and studies concerning the psychology of happiness among people. The way the author words his argument makes it sound like he believes people work because they enjoy work itself and making money. While this is true for some, many others work because they love their chosen field, for them the money is a byproduct of doing what they love. Porter is thinking about this from a purely economic standpoint, he does not notice the underlying reasons ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He looks at the question form an economist's viewpoint stating that since people strive to do what makes them happy, working and making money are the things that bring people the most happiness. While this is true, the author doesn't really acknowledge that many work because they enjoy the job and money is potentially a side objective and not the main motivator. To measure happiness one can see how content they are with their position in life and the choices that got them there. If most of the choices seemed to have a positive effect than they are more likely to be happy. One can also think of how many of those decisions they regret, less regret more likely correlates to more happiness. Porter viewing the question like an economist severely limits what he sees. All he can see is the work people put in and the money they get out of it, he assumes people work to make money and not maybe because they enjoy their job. To an economist there is nothing but work and money involved in making people ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. The Proposal: Does Happiness A Recipe For Disaster? "Happiness as a byproduct of living your life is a great thing....but happiness as a goal is a recipe for disaster." One of the greatest things in life is to experience the feeling of happiness. Whether it's because you're surrounded by loved ones or you're doing something you loved or something random happened that put a smile on your face it's a great thing to feel happiness. What that quote is saying however is that by striving to get that amazing feeling we could cause more problems for ourselves. Although we all enjoy that feeling of happiness and don't like when it goes away we have to realize that most of the time it's not hard work that brings it back. What brings us the feeling of happiness is letting the unexpected happen, it's sharing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the movie a successful book editor named Margaret blackmails her assistant Andrew into marrying her so that she can get her green card and keep her job. Margret is determined to keep her job because she believes it is the only thing that can make her happy. She was so focused on reaching that happiness that she didn't see that she could be finding an even greater happiness in her relationship with Andrew. Even after spending time with him Margaret was still going to go through with the fake wedding risking Andrew going to jail all because she thought the only way to be happy was to keep her job. In the end she finally realized that while she had been chasing the goal of happiness the greatest happiness had been happening right in front of her and she hadn't even realized it. It took her so long that she was standing at the altar when she finally accepted that because she had been so focused on the goal of happiness she had put Andrew, her true happiness, in danger and that she would now have to give him up to protect him. She was almost deported and almost lost the person she loved all because she was focused on happiness as a goal. Now I know this type of extreme situation doesn't happen everyday, but it does show an important lesson. That if we don't stop every once in a while to realize and appreciate what is right in front of us we may end up losing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Definition Essay On Happiness According to the Dictionary, "happiness is the mental or emotional state of well being which can be defined by others. A pleasurable or satisfying experience.". Of course that's true, the feeling of happiness is what it's scientifically defined as, but happiness is much more than that. Happiness could be a certain sound, a smell, even feeling a certain piece of clothing or a thick warm blanket. People spend hours even years trying to work for what they think is happiness. They work for hours to get large amounts of money, but they never find the happiness their looking for. That's because happiness isn't materialistic, happiness isn't something you can buy with expensive items. Even though some people believe you can buy happiness, that's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Knowing they're happy for whatever reason is where i find my happiness. The feeling of happiness starts off with just a simple look at something or even someone you love. Having the feeling of happiness in your heart that slowly creeps up until you're smiling for what seems like ages. True happiness doesn't last for seconds or even minutes, it feels as though it lasts a life time. People tend to feel the most happiness in their daily lives rather than happiness over all. For instance, if someone opens the door for you, does something outrageous, tells a funny story or simply reacts kindly to you, you can experience happiness. Laughing at someones joke can cause you to feel happy even for just a moment. Another definition of happiness in our daily lives is self appreciation such as, getting that new raise, getting an A on a test or even getting into the college you want. These examples all cause happiness in different but still rather large ways. We seem to think that happiness is so difficult to come by, we focus so hard on what happiness is that we don't even realize the simple things in life that are truly making a difference. We can become significantly happy without even noticing. Although happiness seems like it's hard to find it's not all that difficult. What's hard to come by is the feeling of genuine happiness ; genuine happiness is what people truly look for. Over all happiness isn't about being rich or having the most expensive items ... Whose happiness matters most? We as humans like to live our lives in pursuit of hedonism. And like to judge situations based on the utility it produces for ourselves, and if you're particularly altruistic, the utility of your loved ones. We put such a high priority on being happy, that everything in our lives revolves around it. And we don't often realize that our own happiness leads to others unhappiness. For example, Trump is happy, because he attained a powerful position that he didn't deserve. Yet, the very thing that makes him happy is causing immigrants stress, and fear, and unhappiness. Whose... Doing work lessens my happiness now, but later on in life completing college will set me up for more opportunities. • 15. Happiness Is Not Measurable, Profitable, Or Tradable Happiness is not measurable, profitable, or tradable. People want to have happiness but happiness is a hard thing to grasp, you can not simply hold it in your hand. So how does a person know they have happiness? For some, happiness is waking up and doing something they love, like caring for children. For others it is driving on the open road. What makes someone happy is often related to their age group, as a new toy will not bring the same happiness to a married man as it would his 6 year old daughter. But no matter what age, happiness is a state of mind, not a destination. Happiness does not come from materialistic items, rather a life of meaning, and balance between work and fun, and the choice to be happy will bring true happiness. Happiness is not measured by material items. A new house, boat, or television does not equate to a joyful feeling. They are simply status symbols. In today's society it is common to think that a person is happy when they have material wealth. People seem to forget that materials do not equate to a happy life. The phrase, "money can't buy happiness," is heard often, because it is true. For example, Disneyland is said to be the Happiest Place on Earth, said so much to the point where it is basically accepted as fact. But does that mean that everyone who visits is happy? No, just like material wealth, there is no guarantee. For anyone who has even considered a trip to Disney knows it is expensive. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Giorgio Agamben Magic And Happiness Analysis The concept of happiness has eluded philosophers and intellectuals since the beginning of mankind's ability to reason; though many have attempted to create overarching theories regarding the phenomenon, all have fallen short of grasping the dual nature of its formation: both demanding of hard work and of faith in some higher, seemingly transcendent force. Giorgio Agamben's piece "Magic and Happiness," an excerpt from his work Profanations, is no exception. The passage argues in favor of a belief in "magic," a divine and all–encompassing force that presents, in his opinion, the solitary path towards true happiness. Simply put, a rational actor pursuing happiness would invest time logically into things most important to him/her; the fruition of those efforts is more likely to create happiness and emotional validation. Furthermore, Agamben's erroneous implication that self–awareness of happiness is correlated with a god–complex–like hubris fails to take into consideration the connection between happiness and humility; this correlation is crucial because it allows one to take ownership of the happiness he/she earned. The text poses a bold claim that " [w]hoever enjoys [happiness derived from magic] escapes from the hubris implicit in the consciousness of happiness, since... the happiness that he knows he possesses is not his" (Agamben). However, there is a level of happiness that is agreeable as substantial to all. This has raised concerns about whether happiness comes with age, as many would prefer to age gracefully, due to negativities associated with old age such as ill health or loneliness. Hence, in a review of this matter, there are various factors that could determine whether an individual becomes happy in late adulthood. This paper will identify and discuss these factors in detail. One of the factors that contribute to happiness in late adulthood is gender. Although men and women are of a similar species and are recognized as equal in the modern society, they are not the same. • 21. The Beliefs Of Happiness : What Is Happiness? What Is Happiness? Happiness comes from the emotional and mental well–being characterized by positive emotions. Being happy comes with a good feeling of accomplishment and joy. Every individual has a different perception on what happiness is and what it brings. The word "happy" differs from the seventeenth to eighteenth century. Society grasps a new view on what happiness really is. Happiness can be brought by something physical like a nice car, an extravagant house, or having a lot of money. Happiness can also come from relationships, family, and friendships. McMahon from Yale states that "Hap is the Old Norse and Old English root of happiness, and it just means luck or chance". The way in which happiness is viewed has been revolutionized from the seventeenth century to now. In the seventeenth century, people believed happiness stemmed from luck or divine favor. This elated feeling was commonly thought of as fate or fortune passed down by gods with humans having no control over it. Happiness was not something that could be made or achieved, but something that merely "happened". Greek philosophers like Aristotle and Plato perceived happiness as something that can be earned by various actions and choices. In addition, they believed true happiness is impossible to have due to the intense amount of work, devotion and discipline needed to maintain a good fortune judged by the gods. In "The Raven" when the speaker has a conversation with the raven, it symbolizes his inner conflict. Since man is the only creature to have free will and a conscience, these must be central to a good life for a human. The definition of happiness has long been disputed, and in order to establish a general definition one must discover mankind's function (1095a.20). The distinct function of human beings will differentiate man from all other beings, thus it cannot be related to the characteristics of animals or plants. Aristotle explains that all living beings grow, and that man and animals share instinct. Through elimination, Aristotle establishes the distinct function of man as logic. Only human beings contain three souls and have the ability to use reason. Aristotle states, "the function of man then is activity of soul [thinking well and doing well] in accordance with reason" (). Ultimately, logic allows human beings to use reason in decision–making and to be virtuous. Aristotle explains what a competent judge of ethics is. "Each man judges correctly those matters with which he is acquainted; it is of these that he is a competent critic" (1094b.20). Ultimately, he believes that younger people lack the experience needed to use their reason. Instead, younger people will follow their instinct and feelings. • 24. Is Money Really Buys Happiness? The case study discussed if money really buys happiness. The University of Pennsylvania found rich people are happier than poor ones, poor countries are not happier than rich countries. Nevertheless, to add to the complexity of happiness and money, in 1974, Easterlin found that only one's relative income compared to peers and neighbors matters for happiness, not absolute income (Gomez–Mejia, Balkin, & Cardy, 2014). Comparative relative income to one's peers and neighbors is known as the Easterlin paradox. A more recent study conducted by two Watson professors, Stevenson and Wolfers, say the that Easterlin paradox does not exist. The two professors research concludes; rich people are happier than poor people, rich countries are happier than poor and as countries grow richer they tend to get happier. Although the studies lean towards identifying happiness with money I am inclined to doubt that is the only reason. I agree money is a determinant for happiness at work and in life in general but is not the only factor. Money could be the outcome of other goals achieved in life such as higher education or starting a successful business. In my experiences, the adventure of starting a new business outweighed the income received from the venture. • 30. Definition Essay: The Pursuit Of Happiness The Pursuit of Happiness Americans constantly find themselves desiring happiness. However, what is happiness and how does someone achieve it? According to Webster–Dictionary.org, happiness is "An agreeable feeling or condition of the soul arising from good fortune or propitious happening of any kind; the possession of those circumstances or that state of being which is attended with enjoyment". Every American seeks happiness, but achieving it is the struggle. Americans search for fleeting happiness, therefore, we often find contentment in mediocre living. Happiness is one of the strongest emotions we have as humans. However, it is also one of the biggest deceptions we face. As David Brooks states, "Happiness wants you to think about maximizing your benefits. Difficulty and suffering sends you on a different route" (567). Happiness can lead to greediness and games played on the mind. As Americans, we are fortunate for many modern day conveniences, however, these conveniences create a sense of greed that we do not notice. These modern conveniences births a need for instant satisfaction to be happy. An article by International Pathwork Foundation quotes, "Only if I can have what I want, the way I want it, and when I want it, can I have happiness". Building on this idea, suffering, although carrying negative connotation, can put a whole new twist on happiness that we don't necessarily think about. By enduring negative events, such as the death of a loved one, puts you in a more level headed idea of happiness. It simplifies the things that bring you happiness rather than striving for the maximum level of happiness. When you reach for unobtainable happiness, it sets you up for failure by letting you down when you are unable to reach the high expectations you set for yourself. David Brooks says, "Then, suffering gives people a more accurate sense of their own limitations, what they can control and cannot control" (567). Although suffering is not the most colorful thing to withstand, some people are not only able to discover happiness, but also, a whole new outlook on life. • 32. Happiness and Relationships The person's genetics and childhood or the person's family and culture are things that influence a person's happiness. Happiness is a mindset that is created by a person's surroundings and their origins. Relationships are can be very important for a person's happiness or may have in some ways thought to be important for happiness. One thing that is thought to make a person happy is marriage. Even though marriage has a great influence on a person's life it doesn't make them necessarily happy (Stein A37–A40). A person that is married is generally someone who was already happy but if a person is unsociable or lonely the person may become happier. Marriage can make a person less happy if they expect too much of the other person or think that the person is perfect. A person may become happier by having close relationships and acting kind and grateful but to remain happy the person needs to keep doing these actions and continuing these relationships to continue being happy (Wallis A2–A9). As a child a person must make many relationships to be successful resilient. If a person is abused as a child the person does not have good relationship and may not always grow up happy. If a child has someone to support or encourage the child they will be more likely to be happy this person is called a champion (Gorman A52–A55). A person that has a negative attitude can cause bad relationships and can also cause others to be unhappy. Because of this idea a person must choose a person that can be ... • 34. The Is Not A Good Thing Wouldn't it be nice to be in complete bliss every day of your life? That seems like a stupid question to ask; of course your first response would be, "duh". Everyone wants happiness in their life, that is why most of our decisions are based on whether it will make us happy or not. This is where we underestimate the power of going through something sad or difficult. Although nobody searches for sadness, it is vital that we experience some sort of pain in our lives to balance the happy times, since there are risks of pursuing extreme happiness. Sometimes we can have too much happiness, experience happiness at the wrong time, become sad when we are looking for happiness, or even seek the wrong kind of happiness. While you may argue that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Having too much happiness could end up giving you the same effect as a drug; the more you have, the more you want. Being too happy consumes us, and could also come when we do not need it. When things go wrong, we need to feel bad, it only makes sense. Feeling happy when something bad happens won't teach you anything. If you lost your job, but you're happy you lost it, then you'll never learn the importance of a job. We also become more gullible when we're happy. This may cause you to miss warning signs that you need to see, causing you to trust someone more than you should. Fear ignites the fight–or–flight response. So, being too happy to acknowledge this can create many problems. For example, if I am mindlessly walking my dog down the sidewalk, headphones in, thinking of how excited I am for the weekend, I may not notice the sketchy car that is driving up behind me. Being happy during the wrong times could make you overlook something important, and could even make you worse off than you were before. I've learned in philosophy that the more you search for happiness, the less likely you will be to find it. Epicureans believe that if you focus on what you are doing, rather than how you feel, then pleasure will come. One reason for this may be because you are constantly searching in other places, so you miss what is right in front of you. For me, when I came to college I was so ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

"There are many ways to be happy, but we cannot find happiness. No object, no event, no outcome or life circumstance can deliver real happiness to us" (Faigley 368). The author very efficiently presents her research verified by numerous sources of related studies. McGonigal bases her essay on two types of self–rewards – monetary and non–monetary, classifies most likely contributing factors to human happiness, and as a game designer/researcher, she explains how games contribute to higher quality of life. This study wholly confirmed the connection between intrinsic rewards and level of life satisfaction. Those individuals who focused on development of their personal strengths and social relationships, "were measurably happier over the entire two–year period completely regardless of external life circumstances like salary or social status" (Faigley 369). To prove her points, the author involved Elizabeth Gilbert's description of happiness, which was absolutely in agreement with her own representation. To explain why people are so concentrated on extrinsic rewards, the author used Sonja Lyubomirsly's clarification: "We have been conditioned to believe that the wrong things will make us lastingly happy. We have been sold the American dream" (Faigley 372). The explanation is totally suitable to nowadays mentality. Our children want to pursue medical or law career not because they dream of helping people, but rather of monetary satisfaction. • 37. The Role Of Happiness In Fahrenheit 451 "Most people are about as happy as they make up their minds to be." –Abraham Lincoln. People can be happy if and only if they try to be. True happiness is spending time with others, and having fun together. Something that involves other people or other things other than themselves is what true emotion is. People who do not try to experience the world are not the best at being happy. Feeling emotion is the thing that a human must always have, and it makes a human have personality. People could be happy for the wrong reason, in example; the bullying type of happiness is unjust, and it is not real happiness if someone puts someone else down, to make them feel happier. • 38. Don Peck And Ross Douthat's 'Does Money Buy Happiness?' The "American Dream" is based on the fundamental idea that one's social status, and ultimately their happiness, is deeply rooted in their financial success and the material items they possess. It is often believed that mass consumerism has become an indicator of one's ability to participate as an elite member of society and ultimately complete the pursuit of happiness. However, groups also object these views of happiness and suggest that happiness is based on far more than material items. One's perception on the correlation of materialism and the pursuit of happiness is dependent on an individual's experience as a consumer. Don Peck and Ross Douthat convey through their editorial, "Does Money Buy Happiness?," that one's level of content to a degree is contingent upon their ability to act as a consumer in society. Peck and Douthat base their assumption on research which shows, "For individual countries, with few exceptions, self–reported happiness has increased as incomes have risen" (332, par.4) Based on this statistic, it is being assumed that one's ability to support their lifestyle and perhaps better it creates a sense of security that leads to happiness.... • 39. Somnambulist By Alfie Kohn Analysis Happiness is seen differently for many people; some rely on money, image, status and popularity for their happiness. While others may choose to rely on personal growth, community feeling, and personal relationships to obtain happiness. These are the differences between extrinsic and intrinsic happiness. Extrinsic happiness relies on materialistic needs while intrinsic happiness relies on psychological needs, as shown in the movie Happy. "How Not to Get Into College: The Preoccupation with Preparation," by Alfie Kohn, and the poem "Somnambulist," by Heron Jones, suggests that students are taught to rely solely on extrinsic rewards and getting into college to achieve happiness. The article "How Not to Get into College: The Preoccupation with Preparation," by Alfie Kohn, shows that the main focus for students are extrinsic rewards, in this case, a college acceptance. The article states that colleges and universities only "seem to be looking for winners rather than learners" (Kohn, 25), which only continues to teach students to rely on extrinsic rewards. Students focus on preparing for college by completing assignments that "the very concept of [doing things] for pleasure [is] unfamiliar to [them]... They [are] ignoring – or perhaps, by now, even forgetting – what they [enjoy] doing." (Kohn, 6–7). In the process of trying to achieve these rewards, they focus on successfully completing things like assignments and projects rather than doing things for their own pleasure. The poem "Somnambulist" by Heron Jones also displays that educators are teaching students to rely on rewards for happiness. "Even schools paint the fantasy with the brush of prosperity" (Jones, 28), the metaphor the comparison between a teacher and a student, to show the similarity and differences between the understanding that educators and students have of happiness. Educators allow students to believe that extrinsic rewards are the most important thing in their lives and is used as motivation to achieve the highest possible grades. Students are forced to achieve the happiness that the educators want them to achieve, to benefit themselves and the education system. Students rely heavily on getting into college thinking that it will benefit them in the future; however the lifelong search for intrinsic happiness does not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
