1. TASK TWO: Textual analysis using ‘Art of the title’
The conjuring
The main title sequence focuses on a projector showing
past newspaper stories of hauntings. This is really effective
because it already creates the atmosphere for the horror
film making it feel like a true story which is actually based
on. Also it is done in black and white and not in colour
which signifies that these stories happened in the past.
What is also effective is that the first two shots concentrate
on two family’s the Perron family and the Warren family.
This is most likely done because these two family’s relate to
the main story and either they are haunted or haunted the
house what they lived in.
The text used is really
basic or you could even
say it is quite old
fashioned because if you
had fancy writing it wouldn’t make the opening sequence
create tension like it does now. Also later on in the title
sequence shows a specific house and a noose hanging on
the tree in front of it. This shot is effective because the
house is set behind the tree and the camera is more focused on the noose instead. This
could suggest this house is significant and that it is haunted because there are hangings
what happen here. The same house is at the start aswell with the families so it already
creates a story in our heads that this house is specifically haunted and these characters
played a part in it.
This shot here of the children and the names of the
people who edited the film is significant. This is
because the names go over the children’s heads
except of the woman’s. This could suggest that
children play a key part in this film and they are
posseted in some sort of way.
